Welcome to March, best month of the year! Already a ton of questions onboard, so let's get to it!
more impressive TN win... beating UK or KU?
Jared: Beating Kansas. Tennessee still had four players out of the lineup for that game, as opposed to have three of four back for Kentucky. Also, I believe Kansas is just a tad better than Kentucky.
Saying 'Howdy!" as requested on Twitter! Your thoughts on Marquette's 3 consecutive OT road wins?
Andy: Good man! Marquette has had some amazing victories, and Buzz Williams is yet another Big East Coach of the Year candidate (along with Boeheim and Dixon). Seems like EVERY game is a wire job with Marquette; fans must be worn out. Tonight figures to be another one vs. Louisville.
So how much did that loss to Maryland hurt VT's at large chances? How deep do you think they will need to go in the ACC tourney to lock up a bid?
Clarissa: Loss hurt, but not nearly as much as the hairball coughed up at BC. Lack of non-conference juice means VT probably needs to win two of three (NCSU, Ga Tech and first round of ACC). But I'm not a bracketologist.
I attend UC but am a lifelong Pitt fan. Therefore I have two sets of questions for you here.1. Bearcats win tonight-do we storm the court? And is one win this week plus 2 in the tourney enough to garner an at-large selection?2. What is the best seed Pitt can get if they win out and win the BE tourney? Just a 2 seed? Or is there a slim chance that they can sneak up and grab the last #1 seed?
Nate: That's like five questions. But I'm not sure Cincy should storm the court for beating Villanova -- doesn't feel right. Your formula for making tourney sounds about right for Bearcats. As for Pitt: No way it gets a No. 1 seed, I don't think. Would need a lot of teams to lose a lot of games for that to happen.
Pat, who's the best out west Gonzaga, New Mexico, or BYU?
Brock: I'd say New Mexico. Swept BYU, and I'm just not completely sold on the Zags.
is there a team that you think may upset butler in the horizon league tournament?who? thanks
Bill: I'd give No. 2 seed Wright State a shot, but it's a long shot.
Hey Pat,Do you think Gordon Hayward is NBA ready?
John: I'm not an NBA evaluator, but I'd like to see him log at least one more year in the weight room first.
Pat, Duke wraps up the last 1 seed with a win at MD tomorrow night. Obviously, I count the UNC gane as a win. I'm right aren't I?
Chris: If those things happen, I'd say Duke is very close to locking up a No. 1 seed.
Thoughts on the showdown in College Park tomorrow night? Who is your ACC POY?
Mike: Can't wait, should be a great one. As for POY: I'll probably have an answer after that game. Right now, flip a coin between Vasquez and Scheyer.
Did Steve Alford deserve more than just a slap on the wrist from the MWC after going after BYU's Jonathan Tavernari?
Seth: It was a really poor moment for Alford, who should have been the adult in that moment. But what else do you want the league to do? Suspend him? Stone him? I'd say a reprimand and the accompanying embarrassment of having that on YouTube is probably sufficient.
Pat, who is your choice for NCAA POY, Wall or Turner? Any chance Cousins can get in the mix?
Matt: Turner, as of today. Love what he's done to carry Ohio State to the top of the Big Ten. Wall has been sensational as well, but Turner is doing even more. As for Cousins: around midseason I had him ahead of Wall, but probably not anymore.
After that Syracuse Villanova game... is Syracuse the good or was Nova just overrated
Zack: I have believed all season that Villanova is good, so I was supremely impressed by Syracuse's performance. That was a statement game, and the best I've seen a contender look down the stretch.
I would think that K-State has the ability to win out and lock up the #1, not Duke. If they can beat my Jayhawks tomorrow, then I'd have to bump them into the last #1. Their overall profile looks better than Duke's in my opinion.
Andy: Good point about K-State. I've been saying on several radio shows this week that the Wildcats are the team nobody is talking about but should be. But I'm not sure the overall profile is better than Duke's. Beat Kansas in Lawrence and then we can talk.
Do you watch college bball every day?
Ryan: Just about, yes. Monday-Thursday, definitely, then Saturday and Sunday as well. Friday not usually. That's part of the job in Feb-march -- and I will be watching Fridays starting this week.
God Bless March Madness. Any way GT gets a W tonight at Clemson?
Matt: With this Georgia Tech team, who knows? And this Clemson team? Tigers have a chance for good back-to-back wins, though, having won at FSU. Might be rounding into form.
Pat, what is your opinion of internet sports blogs (ie. have they hurt, helped, or not affected old forms of media like newspapers)?
Matt: Some of both. Some have helped give sports fans more information. Some have dumbed down the general sports conversation without doing any (or much) firsthand reporting. Newspapers are still trying to figure out how they're going to be part of the future.
Does Cal need to win the Pac-10 Tournament to get into the Big Dance?
Ben: Cal is the only Pac-10 team with a chance to get in as an at-large candidate. Bears played a tough non-conference schedule and had some injuries early. But if I were them, I'd try really hard to win the Pac-10 tourney (or at least make the final) just to take the anxiety out of the situation.
Does temple have a chance at getting a 3 seed?
Chris: At 24-5, 12-2 in a good conference, and with some quality wins, yes, I'd say Temple has a shot at that. But I haven't fully scoped the competition for the 3 line.
Do you think UK can improve their 3 point shooting?
Chris: It couldn't do much worse, so I'd say the only way to go is up. Kentucky needs Dodson and Bledsoe to regain some confidence in their shots, because they'll be invited to shoot them every game in the next month. I have to think both of them will start hitting again at some point.
Is Roy Williams an overated Coach? 8 McDonalds all americans, players returning from the championship team and he cant even make an NIT?
Marv: Hard to overrate two national titles, my man.
Hey Pat, my question on who you think should win Coach of the year in which i believe Calipari should with the way he has transformed UK into title contenders but also meshing all the incredible talent he has with 4 frosh and to be 27-2, incredible i believe!
Raphael: Calipari has had a great year. But my vote goes to Jim Boeheim. Syracuse wasn't even a Top 25 team coming into this season, now No. 1.
I think Louisville can beat Syracuse this Saturday. Your thoughts? It is the last game at Freedom Hall.
Ed: If Syracuse plays like it did Saturday, the answer is a succinct no. Will it play that well again, on the road, in what should be a very special environment? I don't know. But Louisville will have to play well to win.
You said your not sold on Gonzaga could you please explain why, they play anywhere and have logged more miles than any other team in the country.
Matt: If you can lose to San Francisco and Loyola Marymount, you can surely lose at any step of the way in the NCAAs. Also, some bad efficiency #s for the Zags if you follow Ken Pomeroy's stats. He ranks Gonzaga 46th nationally.
What are your thoughts on Northern Iowa? Are they in regardless of what happens in the MVC tournament this week?
Jason: Noooooo. UNI has to win the Valley to get in, I believe. That's a one-bid league this year.
Xavier is known to start hitting their stride early in March, and this year looks to be no different. How do you see them performing in the A-10 tournament and into the NCAA tournament?
Andrew: X is playing really well. Seems like Chris Mack has his guys right where he wants them after the beatdown at Dayton (which is sometimes a necessary thing). I'd say X and Temple are the co-favorites to win the league tourney right now and will be dangerous in the NCAAs.
Pat, I am a UC fan but my boyfriend is a UK fan. Please settle our debate of who will lose first in their respective conference tournaments?
Rachel: You're in trouble on that one.
ODU in or out?
David: No bad losses, really, and a nice win over Georgetown. But BracketBuster loss to Northern Iowa stung. Better make the CAA final to feel secure.
When will this week's edition of the minutes be posted?
Todd: I'm hoping it's posted now. If not, should be any time.
Do you find it odd that Miss. St. is hanging around the tournament? They have some terrible losses and not 1 good win this year, I find it very confusing, even in a weak bubble year.
Greg: I wouldn't put Miss State in the tournament right now, for the reasons you mentioned. Zero good qins.
Give me a quick coaching carousel dominos!!! Who are hot names and where are they going???
Mike: I'm anticipating changes at Auburn, Oregon, Rutgers, and we already have one at DePaul. There will be others, obviously. Might Oregon make a run at Mark Few, or try to lure Mark Fox back to the West? Would Rutgers consider a MAAC coach like Fran McCaffrey or Kevin Willard? Will DePaul look for a familiar name (Ty Corbin) or a name with NBA cache (Reggie Theus)? It will be interesting.
Based on preseason predictions: which two teams are your biggest shocks as locks (in) and no-hopers (out of) for March Madness? Make mine the mighty Pitt Panthers and the whatever UNC Tar Heels; no one else even comes to mind.
Terry: Good choices. I'm shocked that Kansas State is a lock as well, and shocked that UConn is on the outside looking in (at the moment).
What do you anticipate more: March Madness or the start of College Football?
Michael: Madness. But it's close. Love the start of CFB because of all the waiting through the summer and boring baseball -- but nobody knows how to finish off a season like college basketball.
How intense is tomorrow's 49ers-Rams game going to be in Rhode Island, both teams are fighting for their lives right now.
Charles: Should be a desperate battle, no doubt. Pretty much an elimination game, pending A-10 tournament.
Whos done a better job al golden or fran dunphy?
Chris: Why choose? Celebrate both! Actually, I have to give the nod to Golden -- if you can get Temple to a bowl game, you should be able to fix health care.
Will Billy Gillispie get back into coaching next year and where?
Cody: I don't know for sure, but I spoke with him recently and he said he "absolutely" wants to get back into the game. Hopefully he's in a better place now. Seems to be.
Who are your first team All Americans?
Will: Hmmmm, I have not formulated this until right now, so this is off the top of my head: G John Wall, Jon Scheyer, Scottie Reynolds; F Evan Turner; C DeMarcus Cousins.
I've heard rumors there's more than a fraction of a percent chance that Evan Turner returns for a senior season. What do you think the chances are?
Newman: Just guessing, but I'd say slimmer than a fraction. Why come back?
How crazy is it that the KU - KSU game isn't nationally televised?
John: Pretty darned. Believe it's on ESPN360, though, so log on and check it out there.
Any chance of UTEP getting an at-large bid without Winning the C-USA Tournament?
Kris: Yeah, I think there's a chance. Win two games this week and don't stumble early in the CUSA tourney, and they'll be in the mix.
Sherron Collins over Jon Scheyer for first team all american?
Brandon: Possibly. Or Vasquez.
Do my Irish need to beat both UConn and Marquette this week to get in, or will one be enough?
Kathy: Better win both. Those losses to Loyola, Northwestern, Rutgers and St. John's stay on your permanent record.
Can you ride into the sunset for college football & only do college basketball reporting from now on? Think how many college football fans would now like you....
George: Hahaha. But think how many college basketball fans would rather see me only write college football. Works both ways!
How do you see your alma mater Mizzou doing in the big dance this year? Think their murderous press leads to another upset in march for the Tigers?
John: Mizzou can really struggle offensively at times and we'll see whether Justin Safford can come back and play -- but I still would hate to see the Tigers in the bracket opposite my team. Such a problematic style of play. I give Mizzou a chance -- pending matchups -- to make the Sweet 16.
Who wins the Big 10 tourney now with Hummel gone?
Ray: I'd say Ohio State is the favorite of the moment. Michigan State has been a slight disappointment to me. Wisconsin is a possibility. Maybe Illinois scores some points for a change. But I'd start with the Buckeyes right now.
I haven't heard much talks about the expansion of the tourney for a week or two. Have my hopes of them not changing this at all come true? Also, why are they expanding this tournament but can't make a college football tourney?
Greg: Don't get me started on the football thing. As for the NCAA hoops tourney: I'm sure that talk will fire up again after the season. I think it would be a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE idea.
Weber St., Montana or Northern Colorado to win Big Sky Tourney title?
Vince: Tough to pick against Weber -- but watch out for Tad Boyle's UNC team!
Pat, Da'Sean Butler... one of the most complete players in college?
Could Wall put up Turner's numbers if the roles were reversed?
Brandon: Don't think he could rebound like Turner does.
Do you think if maybe the media (ie.. ESPN) stopped bashing the Pac-10 conference and treat them like, say, maybe the SEC last year, that the chances would be a lot greater of more than one team in the tourny? Seems to me like there are some awful bubble teams getting more love then ASU and Wash. Thoughts?
Pac-10: Um, no. The Pac-10 stinks this year, and that's not media bias. The SEC stunk last year, and I said so. Look it up if need be.
What do you think Miami's chances are against UNC tonight?
Kolin: Everyone has a chance against UNC this year.
Pat, how can everybody be overlooking Darington Hobson for New Mexico? Do you think he is one of the most underrated players in the country??
Patrick: Yes he is, no doubt about it. Having a tremendous year.
purdue is clearly a different team without hummel. With that being said, do they even deserve to be a 2 seed in the tourney?
Ben: Good, tough question. The Selection Committee has a difficult job trying to appraise Purdue and seed it, I believe. Can you completely toss out what the body of work is up to last week and just base it on the last 4-5 games of the year? I think you have to knock the Boilers down some, because you're seeding the team that will play in the NCAAs, but how far? Tricky question, and probably a no-win proposition for the committee.
Is it fair to the players and fans of Binghamton for the school to make a decision that the teams shouldn't play in the America East tournament, where the team has played pretty well this year, despite all distractions?
Jason: Tough, but fair, yes. When your program gets into the kind of embarrassing situations Binghamton has, you have to pay the piper.
how bad is the texas longhorn program right now?! should we panic?
Phillip: I don't think panic is an unjustified reaction. Been a really bad run for the Horns.
What 2 Conference Tourney's excite/intrigue you the most this year from Top to Bottom? For me it is the ACC & BIG12!
Vince: I will be at the ACC and I am very interested in seeing whether anyone rises up to challenge Duke, and whether UNC salvages some pride and makes a run. Also interested in the Big East, with that massive logjam of teams from about 4-10 all capable of beating each other. And I have some perverse interest in the Pac-10 tourney, because winning it is the only way nine of them are going to get into the Dance.
Pat, do you think if Dvision2 school Le Moyne played Syracuse again they would give the orangemen a run for thier money
Jon: Um, no.
Thanks for the chat! Let the Madness begin!!!!
Vince: And that, hoops fans, is an ideal way to wrap it up. We'll talk next week, when Madness will be ON. Thanks for the questions, have a good week.
