Chat with Jay Bilas

  (4:07 PM)

Hang on everyone. Jay should be here soon.

Jay Bilas
  (4:09 PM)

Hey everybody! Welcome to the Fastest Chat in Basketball! I am in the LaGuardia Airport, so fire away while I try and avoid a middle seat......Bilas

Justin (New Jersey)

Hey Jay, who do you think is gonna be that last number 1 seed after kansas st. and duke losing last night. Joe lunardi has it as kansas state? but they just lost by 17 to kansas!!

Jay Bilas
  (4:10 PM)

Duke has more top fifty wins, if that is your cup of tea. I go with the best team. There is still time left, and Duke could prove to be that team, but I still think that Ohio State will sneak into consideration. How come we are so worried about other injuries but nobody cuts the Buckeyes a little slack for being without Evan Turner for six games?! Watch out for the Buckeyes.

Brad ( Moraga, CA)

On what side of the bubble do you see the Gaels right now....the staggering stats about our road 9 wins including at USU by Doug Gottlieb make us stand out on the bubble right???

Jay Bilas
  (4:11 PM)

On the positive side. St. Mary's was better last year, but so was the field. I think that Samhan, McConnell and Dellavadova get in this year.

Cory (Baltimore)

ACC POY General Greivis or Mr. Scheyer?

Jay Bilas
  (4:12 PM)

Tough one. I would go with Vasquez because of his play in ACC games. He has been terrific, and he has less of a supporting cast. Scheyer has been magnificent over the course of the year, though. Tough call.

Brandon (Allentown)

Jay, who's your sleeper next week in the Big East tourney? I really feel like Seton Hall can go and win 2 or possibly 3 games at MSG.

Jay Bilas
  (4:13 PM)

Marquette. Guards, and playing really well. They Golden, forget it....the Warriors are really tough minded and good. Lazar Hayward is one of the truly underrated stars in the college game.

Mike (St. Louis)

Do you think KU has finally done enough that I can feel comfortable that my tickets to the Midwest Regional will let me see my beloved Jayhawks???

Jay Bilas
  (4:14 PM)

They will be close. It will be Midwest or South. Never fear. KU is one of the two best teams, without argument, so the Jayhawks will be taken care of early in the process.

Josh (NYC)

Jay, as a Terp alum, it gives me great pride to say that you are our consensus favorite college basketball analyst. Does that make you feel good, do you feel a little dirty with that information?

Jay Bilas
  (4:16 PM)

Its all good. I really respect Maryland and the job that Gary Williams has done and the guts that the players have shown over the years. No program in the ACC has fought Duke and Carolina like Maryland has. Nobody. Those are some tough kids, and Gary is one great coach. He is a Hall of Famer. Oh, and Happy Birthday, Wacko!!

Will J (Portland, OR)

Jay, how many Pac-10 teams will get into the dance? Cal, Wash? Or will they only have the Pac-10 tourney winner?

Jay Bilas
  (4:17 PM)

It looks like one to me, unless Cal gets to the final and gets clipped. Then, maybe two. I would not expect more than that. Down year in the Pac-10, and it is a bummer.

Tim (Blacksburg)

Jay, VT's chances after last night... I'm assuming a W at GT would solidify a bid and a loss does serious damage, but does a loss there kill their chances altogether? Even with a loss at GT, VT will likely be anywhere from a 3-5 seed in the ACCT.

Jay Bilas
  (4:18 PM)

Va Tech is in. Ask yourself this....if not them, then who? Nobody is really any good behind that group, and if Mississippi State is in the mix, all you have to do is win an intersquad scrimmage to keep pace.

Will J (Portland, OR)

Who is your POY so far?

Jay Bilas
  (4:19 PM)

Evan Turner. Hands down.

Jon (NYC)

Jay, why isn't Rautins getting consideration for BE POY? He is the most important player on the best team. Shouldn't that mean something?

Jay Bilas
  (4:21 PM)

Fair point, but most important is not the measure, is it? I guess it could be. How about doing it like they do the Hall of Fame voting. Vote for the player you believe is most deserving of Player of the Year. If you think it is Rautins, then vote for him. I would not disagree. He is a great college player, and he will play in the NBA. Great kid, and outstanding player.

Vincent (Lewis Center, OH)

Can one player carry a team throughout the tournament or does it need to be more than one because the opposing team can triple team that guy and force others to beat them?

Jay Bilas
  (4:22 PM)

Yes. Danny Manning did it in 1988. And, if a player is tripled and his teammates cannot score every time, they are not very good at all.

Matt (Nashville)

What player has the best motor in college basketball?

Jay Bilas
  (4:23 PM)

Hard to argue with Greivis Vasquez of Maryland.

Kevin Cencula (College Park, MD)

Court-storming last night by Terp students...Justified?

Jay Bilas
  (4:24 PM)

Sure. As far as court stormings go, it seemed justified to me. I don't like them in general because people can get hurt, but I don't get my undies in a bunch over it. It is up to the individual schools to deal with it.

Kyle (Indy)

Lets talk Butler. Final four or bust?

Jay Bilas
  (4:26 PM)

Very unlikely to make the Final Four because of a lack of size. But, a great team.

Ryan (Northern Iowa)

Northern Iowa in or out?

Jay Bilas
  (4:31 PM)

They should be in. I am not a fan of the idea that they do not have enough quality wins. I know a good team when I see one, and that is a good team. And, if you compare the Panthers to the teams at the end of the line, they are better than most.

Dylan (GA)

UGA has beat a lot of good teams and some of them by 14+ points, how are they not being talked about? how many wins are they capable of getting in the SEC tourney??

Jay Bilas
  (4:33 PM)

That is a fair point. Georgia has more quality wins than Mississippi State and several of the other teams on the bubble, but more losses. Mark Fox has done a great job, and will continue to do so. He is the real thing.

Mark (Denver)

Who is the best team in the west?

Jay Bilas
  (4:34 PM)

BYU and New Mexico, and Gonzaga is up there as well.

Terry (the 'Burgh)

I understand that the selection committeee takes into account losses absent a team's key player (i.e., Notre Dame and Luke Harangody). Is that correct? What about losses with absent coaches (i.e., UConn's chilly streak sans Jim Calhoun)?

Jay Bilas
  (4:35 PM)

The Committee does take such things into account, but I am not certain that it should. Injuries are part of the game in my opinion, as are illnesses. But, that is the way it is. Nothing we can do about it.

Jon (Baltimore)

Maryland chants toward Jon Scheyer and Duke....over the top???

Jay Bilas
  (4:36 PM)

Yes. It was over the top. But, it was not that big of a deal. It is what it is.

Jay Bilas
  (4:39 PM)

Enjoyed it!! Thanks for stopping by!! Best, Bilas
