Sorry about the delay. computer issues. let's go
Hear me out on this J.A. Is it not reasonable for Lebron to actually take league minimum and go to a good team (like the Lakers) and get his first ring and then go through this Circus next year? His endorsments can make up for one season right?
If he wants to get a ring. The problem is it's tough to pass up $15 million to $20 million at any stage. There are a limited number of years when he can command the kind of money he'll get thrown his way. As long as we're in a capitalist society, the move is to get the most money while you can. Put it this way: would YOU pass up $15 million?
Hey J.A.! With the much anticipated free agent class of 2010, this could be the biggest summer in NBA history--regaring how much the landscape may change. Perennial contenders may be reduced to lottery teams (ie Phoenix, Utah); play-off bubble teams may become legitimate playoff contenders (ie OKC, Miami); cities maybe brought back to basketball dominance/relevance (ie Chicago, New York & LA Clippers). Is it safe to assume that some of these scenarios will occur? This summer may affect the next five+ years of the NBA's status. Thoughts?
The only way the landscape changes is if LeBron leaves Cleveland. No one else dramatically changes the outlook of the league by himself.
whats up with my team? do i need to get a senior citizen card?
No, you need to stop by to pick up the prescriptions for all the old guys on your way to the arena. I thought the Celtics could contend if healthy. I don't think they'll be like their old selves again this season. I also kept hearing that Rasheed doesn't really get going until March. Well, it's March
So if the rumors about JJ to the Knicks is true, where does that put the Hawks this off season? Do we have the cap space to go pursue a superstar or will we just put Jamal Crawford in JJ's place in build through the draft. What do you see the Hawks doing this summer?
David:even if Johnson leaves the Hawks wouldn't have enough salary cap space to go shopping in the Wade/Bosh or Boozer/Stoudemire class. So they're back to their young core...the question is what would they do with Crawford in 2011, when he's up? Is he that vital, or do you let him go to spend the money on someone else?
J.A. please be the first analyst to give me thoughts on Durant for MVP. Lebron and Kobe have far better players than Durant and he's helping the Thunder get into the playoffs.
Sorry, but I can't put him above LeBron and Kobe. Not Dwight Howard either. MVPs make their teams elite. Durant's done a great job with the Thunder, but they're not about to compete for the championship
Was at the Magic game last night, under the basket where Rose went down. Regardless of who fouled who, there was no question Rose initiated the contact and jumped hard into Dwight. This should not be viewed as a dirty play. Your take?
sounds like you had a better view than I did...
Hola Senor, why, or even better, WHY doesn't the coaching staff of the Clippers tell Baron Davis that if he takes another 3 pointer, other than a desperation buzzer beater, he's benched for the remainder of the game? How would you stop a player from still chucking when they're shooting 28% from 3? Please have Baron call Josh Smith for advice. Less 3 pointers = better overall game.
It's tough to keep a guy from shooting when he has the ball in his hands most of the time. And you don't want to pay Baron all that money jsut to sit him.
I always hear about how players love Houston, but nothing about Dallas? What is the difference? same taxes, similar size and weather
Great question. I'm not a resident of the country of Texas, so any Texans are welcome to submit their theories. One thought: the Cowboys are so big in Dallas, basketball players know they'd never get as much love. Another thought: Dallas doesn't have the equivalent of the Geto Boys reppin it.
J.A. Thanks for chatting with us today. I have a question regarding the free agent class for 2010. How come none of the reporters covering the NBA ever mention Kobe as a free agent when he can opt out of his contract at the end of this season? Kobe has already refused to sign a contract extension that has been offered to him by the Lakers. If the Lakers fail to reach the NBA finals or fail to win the championship I think there is a very strong possibility that Kobe leaves considering all the problems he has had with his teammates not playing as hard as he believes they can be playing.
One reason you don't hear the media talking about it is people around the league don't talk about it. No one believes he's gonna leave. Which of the teams with big cap space would give him a better shot of winning a championship than the Lakers? As doom and gloomy as it's been in LA lately, the Lakers still have the best record in the Western Conference.
Which four teams make the East & West Finals?
I'll stick with Cleveland and Atlanta in the East and update my West thoughts to say Lakers and...Dallas.
What do the Celtics need to be dangerous in the playoffs, other than the Luck of the Irish?
The Hot Tub Time machine. Set it to 2008
I feel like the show Around the Horn should have a postseason as well. Seed everyone up by using total wins throughout the year and then have them go 1 on 1 for a few weeks worth of shows but still keep it a 30 minute show by throwing in a couple more topics.. (A good time for this would be Septemberish, so the MLB playoffs, NFL season, and NBA and NHL preseasons can all be discussed) How would you feel about that idea and if it were to happen how do you feel you would do? An answer is appreciated, I could brag forever about how I got to spend time in the Adande Lounge...
Hmmm...then it would pretty much just be PTI for a week. We've already got one of those.
The most interesting Finals showdown would be ______ vs ______.
Cavs vs. Lakers. Easy. LeBron and Kobe. Shaq too. Runner-up: Orlando vs. Lakers. It's gotten really chippy. seeing how Vince fares under Finals pressure would be interesting as well.
Does Jerry Sloan deserve coach of the year this year? People forget that he has taken a disgruntled Boozer, a crying Kirilienko, and (now that the trade deadline has passed) an upset DWill and put them in position to get a 2-seed in the West. The man is a hall of famer.
This would be a good year to take care of the longest-running injustice in sports: the lack of a COY award for Sloan.
If I were Bosh I'd bolt from the Raptors after this season. Colangelo has not put a decent team around him so why should he stay. Knowing that, Colangelo should try to salvage something in a sign and trade. How about Bosh to the Thunder for Green, Harden, Ibaka and Harpring (to balance the salaries) plus the Thunder's first round draft pick. Who says no ?
That's too much to give up for OKC. They love Green and Ibaka.
Is AI done? Is he going to call it a career like this?
He's had 3 chances now to show he can accept a secondary role and has yet to do it. I don't see how he could get a better opp. than what he had in Philly and that flamed out. Even for teams that wanted a bump in ticket sales he isn't worth it now...and I'm not sure he could sell more seats anyway at this stage. This is one of the saddest endings to a Hall of Fame career I've ever seen.
I disagree on Sloan. He has good players (almost always has) and has never been more than second-best. They've had stars, but always run into better teams. If you always win silver and bronze, nobody gives you a gold out of sympathy.
He lost to Michael Jordan twice in the Finals. There's no shame in that. Pat Riley never beat Michael Jordan in the Eastern conference playoffs and he was a great coach.
I disagree with your point about sitting Baron Davis. I remember Phil Jackson once saying that the only real power a coach has to make a player play the way he should, is time on the court. If you keep playing Baron - and all his coaches have done precisely that - he will never even make the effort to play the right way. Paying him all that money matters not the least bit, when he's costing your team games. For the long term, sitting him when he constantly plays idiotic basketball, is better for the success of the team and for himself. Star or no star.
Actually John Wooden said that first, in some form or fashion (to use a phrase that Phil Jackson likes to say).If you sit Baron then he checks out entirely. Better to have him into it on occasion (the best example was that home W over the Celtics) than to lose him completely.
The least interesting (but somewhat realistic) Finals showdown would be? (Jazz vs Bucks?)
At least Bucks-Jazz would have Brandon Jennings and Deron Williams. Least interesting would be San Antonio vs. Atlanta.
What about Nuggets Cavs for a Finals matchup...LeBron v Melo actually covering each other.
That'd be good too. Series I most want to watch is Cavs-Heat, Bron-Wade, which we could get in the first round. It's possible we'd have the best series of the playoffs in the first round 2 years in a row. Even if the Cavs swept Miami I bet the two stars would still put on a great show
To Ryan in MIN...Houston is closer to the water and more times Dallas gets snow/ice storms than Houston.
J.A.: Top to bottom, will this be the most competitive NBA playoffs in the last 5 years? 10 years? I know Chicago v. Boston was great, but we have several young and/or rallying teams warming up at the right time.
The problem with the young teams is that they're young...that usually doesn't lead to good playoff performances. Obviously Chicago was an exception last year. But 1 reason Rose was so effective was he was coming off an NCAA championship game appearance (much like Magic in his rookie year). Jennings? Durant? Haven't been to the highest levels of their sport yet
We are out to win THIS year (the lottery that is).
Wouldn't that be better than losing in the first round of the playoffs? Derrick Rose and Evan Turner? I'm getting hungry for deep dish pizza just thinking about that.
Hey JA, I would give up $15 mil to make $2 mil, if I know I am already making $60 mil on endorsements!! Jakes makes a good point there, and to be able to most likely go down as one of the best teams in NBA history, it would be very intriguing!
Even Bill Gates isn't passing on $15 million. There's no way LeBron's advisers would let him do that. And if he does they need to be fired for being so irresponsible.
If K-mart is unable to return this season, how big of a blow is it to Denver's playoff hopes?
Not that I think Kobe's leaving the Lakers, but wouldn't the Clippers be a legitimate option for him? Solid group of young guys that Kobe can take to the next level, and his choice of coach and GM, plus he won't have to move. He's toyed with them before.
Changes everything, and is one of the reasons I'm moving Dallas into the WCF. A lot of Denver's toughness comes from Martin. So does their ability to match up with the Lakers.
Sorry, that answer was from the previous question
As for Kobe to the Clippers, he has toyed with him before...and that's why I think they wouldn't call him. He left a lot of hurt feelings in Clipper Country. Let's say you had a date with Jessica Biel and she stood you up. Six years later she calls you and asks if you want to go out. would you?
Whats your take on the Blazers? Even when they win, they seem to be struggling with something I cant put my finger on.
I liked Doug Collins' take last night, that they don't have a dynamic personality. Roy is great but still has only one playoff series to his name, and isn't very vocal. Miller has been around longer, but is even less vocal. Aldridge is quiet. Juwan Howard is respected, but you can't run your offense through him. So there's no one for them to rally around.
Jessica, what time can I pick you up?
Yes I would!! It's Jessica Biel!
Yes. For her, yes
Pride, fellas. You've gotta have some pride.
Time for me to run. I'm meeting Jessica Biel for lunch.(I broke down and forgave her)
