Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hello everyone! It's a gorgeous sunny day here in Clearwater. Finally getting some over 75 degree days after the coldest winter ever. Hope it's nice wherever you are. I'm back from a great time in Boston at the MIT Sports Conference, so feel free to ask questions about it."Good talk, dad".

Greg (SoPo, Maine)

You seem to have made a pretty radical about face on the Celts. With PP still working into shape and the promise of no back to backs in playoffs, I think this team can still make the ECF.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I don't, but we still have a month to see if they can find a rhythm. It's ugly now.

KC (Windy City)

Did you see that battle between Williams and Rose last night? Amazing athleticism and skill. Rose did a one man fast break off of a Williams fast break score. Which of these two has a higher ceiling?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Rose overall, but he'll always likely be different. More of a scorer.

Joseph (Utah)

Hey we are having an argument on your facebook page, D-Rose or D-Will better right now? Here is my evidence plus D-will actually plays D.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Wow, I have not checked my page since this morning, but have at it!! I actually love seeing these arguments on my facebook page since they stay classy that way.

Bill (Cleveland)

Thorpe, loved your analysis of the west vs. east thing last week. Seriously, you are the smartest coach out there. Why are you not with a team? Every team could benefit from your insight. Sorry espn, give him up for the greater good of the game.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Sorry to disappoint you Bill, but my editor, the esteemed Royce Webb, came up with most of those east vs. west thoughts. I only fleshed them out, a little. He's the brains behind many of my projects. But I'm better at seating arrangements at dinner!

Ali (Calgary, Alberta)

Greetings Coach Thorpe! What do you make of Lamar Odom's comment about Matt Barnes after last night's win against Toronto? "That [expletive] that Matt Barnes pulled," Odom said, "That ain't never going to happen again."

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Sometimes teams need an outside stimulus to gain an edge.

Gerry (Philly)

What can Jrue Holiday's ceiling be (18 pg, 6-7 apg)?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes. I got a great text from an eastern conference executive the other day saying "Evans may be the best guard from this class in a few years, but Holiday will be the best pg".

J.D. Salinger (The Grave)

Caulfield could run the show for the Pacers better than whatever they're putting out their at point guard. Holden's 6'3, got upside through the roof, and can really see things clearly out there. I say they give him a shot. Better than T.J Ford or A.J Price.

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Interesting post. Caulfield would complain too much, and he's a bad speller.

Bango (Brew City)

Fear the Deer!!!

Curt ((dallas))

Is coaching over rated in the Nba? Give any average joe a superstar and 4 role players and he'll at least make the playoffs right?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Just the opposite. It's a coaches league.

RP (OKC)

I should really be listening in Civil Procedure right now, but I'm too busy thinking about the PLAYOFFS...Is there any reason the Thunder should break up the core of Durant, Westbrook, and Green for a big name free agent? I realize Durant and Westbrook aren't going anywhere, but people feel Green is expendable and I don't...thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I'm with the people. But not for just anyone. They should keep Green until a perfect fit can be had.

antonio (perth, australia)

hey david, all the way from australia... just wondering your thoughts on the recent play of the bucks and the play of our aussie boy bogut, he seems to be dominating both ends of the court, and credit to coach skiles, he is one good coach, every one forgets the job he did with the bulls...great team balance with salmon coming in, but boguts play has been sensational. your thoughts coach

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Skiles has improved, without doubt. Credit him for that. Bogut is a beast.

Derek (Houston)

Houston is falling in love with Jordan Hill after 2 good games- can you bring us back down to earth. What is his ceiling?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He is perfect down there in Texas. Backing up Scola, and maybe earning starting center status so Hayes can come off the bench. He's going to be in their top 4 big rotation next year too.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

C'mon Thorpe, quoting a Christmas movie when were so close to Spring? Think warm thoughts!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Um, that was a summer movie.

Jeremiah (Northwestern)

Did you play college basketball? High School basketball? How were you, what position did you play? I always wondered this.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

I played in high school for a very strong program with a great teacher. Unfortunately, we had 6 seniors and I was considered 6th best by our head coach, though I never agreed. But the other 5 were my best friends and I never complained. I played almost every day in college, the last two years in the projects near my apartment. I was a one and a 2, who could really pass and shoot but never a great handler. I just didn't work hard enough.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Noah R. (Miami Fl)

Chris Webber said last night on NBA TV that Miami will not make the playoffs. We have the easiest schedule and 10 more home games of 18 games. How does that assumption even come up? Im sorry but i feel charlotte or Chicago will get left out... maybe even toronto with the road trip and teams vs .500 + left

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Honestly Noah, I wouldn't listen to a word he says, except as in the same way you might take advice from a comedian.

The Difference between Kobe and Bron ((LA))

Kobe's in between mid range game seperates him from Lebron. Bron either wants to shoot a three or drive all the way to the rack. He does not have the mid range game yet and more often than not those mid range shots are the ones that win games. Case closed thorpe!

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

So Dirk is the best player in basketball, since he probably has the best midrange game?

Patrick (Oakland)

Thorpe...I'm headed to Vegas soon. Red or Black?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Neither. Save your money and drive to Henderson-there is a great sushi place there.

Ian (Fort Worth)

Chances Roddy Beaubois climbs into the top 10 Rookie Ratings by the end of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes. It won't be easy though.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

My mistake coach, I was picturing the scene from Christmas Vacation when Rusty walks while Clark is holding the chainsaw, "you know dad, I've been thinking... good talk dad!"

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Actually I figured you were thinking that. Great minds...!!

Justin (Minneapolis)

Metallic pea? No, antarctic blue! All kidding aside, do you think the Wolves are keeping Love on the bench to showcase Jefferson a bit more to make him more attractive as trade bait this off-season?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

No, Jefferson needs no showcasing.

Patrick (PA)

You state that Holiday will be the best PG from this years class. What if the Sixers get #1 pick? Evan Turner would look great next to Holiday, agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

They would be a great combo, yes. Especially on d.

Marvin (Frankfort, KY)

David, you are an absolute moron. Why is that?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

There are many reasons. I like dumb movies. I'm silly in general. I am tough on my kids. I sometimes eat late at night. Should I go on?

Jim (Chicago)

Hi Dave, Love the chats. Do the the Bulls have to make the playoff for them to bring back VDN? BTW I do not beleive they will make it.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I'm not sure. Losing Noah was a killer.

Thomas (Boston)

Coach, I just want to say I think it's great that you went to the MIT conference. A friend of mine met you and said you fit right in with all the geeks, except for how you look. So thanks for trying to get smarter, it helps out all of us.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

It was cool to be, quite literally, the dumbest guy in a room of 1000 people. I just soaked the brainpower in.

Jamie (Eureka)

How can anyone honestly pick anyone over Tyreke Evans for ROY? His numbers speak for themselves, not to mention he's done it from the start, day one of the season, whereas others have had only spurts for month's at a time (see Jennings in November, Curry in January, Collison in February?) Since when does consistency not count?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

He may not be my #1 guy next week, Curry and Collison have just been so good, but he's 85-90% in as the ROY once the season ends.

mark (wv)

ive watched alot of cavs games this season. is andy varejao the best in the league at catching the ball at the rim and scoring? that guys never misses a layup

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

No he is not. But he's way up there.

Jesus (St.George Utah)

The Utah Jazz do not have one player shooting better than 80% at the foul line. Do you think this could become a issue in the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Without doubt.

Tyler M (Erie, PA)

More likely? Collison or Paul leaving New Orleands?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

DC.

Ben (Baltimore)

What's up with Orlando all of a sudden? Are they just finally healthy and gelling, or have the last couple weeks been a mirage?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Stan's teams tend to start playing well in February, at the latest.

Mike (Akron)

Hey Thorpe, how happy have you been this season seeing the VAST improvement of JJ Hickson? Obviously to hit his ceiling he needs a guy like Bron, but I love how active that guy is. He needs a body on him at all times or else he jams every miss. Great call on him Thorpe.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Thanks, but to be honest, he has a pretty easy gig. Everyone is so focused on Bron.

RayRay (dc)

Thoughts on Andray Blatche's future? He's had some ups and downs since the trade, but mostly BIG ups.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Next year is the key-how does handle being one of the big 3 on day one.

Donnie (New Mexico)

D.T, what's your three favorite musical groups to listen to?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Gotta go with Bruce and his E Street Band. I love the Jackson 5, The Doors, The Who, Earth Wind and Fire. The Beatles too.

Christian (Chicago)

Hello Mr. Thorpe, I'm trying to get back into shape after a long hiatus. In addition to working out, I plan on practicing my shooting as much as possible. Would you happen to have any tips for me on shot mechanics? (Elbow in, follow through, etc)

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Jump straight up and land with balance. Put your hand in the rim. Hold your form. Get your hand under the ball on the shot.

Aaron (Seattle)

What now for my Clippers?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Pain, and a journey.

Tyler (Cleveland)

Nobody believes the 'how can I be bias against when I picked them to win last year' bull, coach....I use the same crutch myself. It s clear you don't care for Kobe....neither do I. Just admit it for god sakes!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I can't speak for you, but there is no bias here. What's not to like? I also picked him as the MVP a season ago.

josh (sioux falls)

i find it funny your longest reply was about your basketball skills! how big is your head?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Huge!! Just ask my hats.

Steve Mtz ( New Mex)

How awesome is it that young scrappy teams that wont take the Celtic's cr*p seem to fluster the C's more and more. Loved Bogut putting Baby on his butt

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Teams like to beat the Celts because of that trash talk they've been using for the past few years.

Hassan Whiteside (Marshall)

Who do you see me being like in five years?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Too early to tell. What's your attitude and work ethic like?

Paul (Ttown)

Hey Thorpe, I'm giving summer basketball lessons to kids through a parks and recreation in my town. Whats the top 3 pieces of advice you can spare me?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

1. Keep it moving-no more than 5 minutes on any drill, and make quick transitions.2. Keep it fun.3. Talk to them about more important things than dribbling and shooting. It's our responsibility.

Warren (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Earth wind and fire! What about Stevie Wonder!?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

He was not in a band.

da (chicago)

U guys with these chats never know what your talking about..you call yourselves experts .. atleast chris webber actually played the game and know the in's and out's ...

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

True. You are right. I forgot that was a pre-requisite.

Jon (Des Moines)

I understand it's early in the campaign, but at some point, does David Kahn regret hiring Kurt Rambis? It just makes no sense to me that Kevin Love plays 12 minutes the other night. I just don't see the Wolves headed in the right direction. They have so many issues that need fixing. Give me some hope.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I was very high on Kurt up until a month ago or so. He seems too on edge now. But don't ask me-let's see what Webber says.

mackey (columbus)

Most underrated player in the league???? Delonte West? Kevin Martin? please tell me who it is?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Varejao is special. Scola too. There are a lot of guys.

T101 (Chennai, India)

Terrence Williams is averaging 13/6/6 on 47% shooting off the bench in the last 5 games. Is it fair to say that he is finally coming into his own? Can we also blame ANYONE on that team for having a bad year when the entire season has been one big joke?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Excellent points, both.

Rusty (Cleveland, OH)

Bigger threat to the Lakers: 1. Mavericks 2. Nuggets 3. The Lakers

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Mavs.

Mitch (LA)

Wilson Chandler for Collison? Who says no?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Hornets, unless you are talking Nick.

Ben (San Francisco)

I remember you answering a question about Jawad Wiliams arrogantly when you were asked what you think about his game and you said "I don't". That really soured me on you because it came off as very negative...You could have either said "I haven't watched him to give you an opinion", "I don't like his game because of this...", or "He shows potential because of this...", but instead you came off as arrogant...Not that I'm a Jawad Williams lover, but he looks like he can be a real contributor to the Cavs...

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Sometimes I try to be a but witty, and it normally does not work. If you knew me you'd know that I have big love for all players. European leagues, D-League, etc. Williams is a borderline NBA guy who can make it work because of where he is. He's got talent, of course.

Evan D. (Orlando)

Is Jo Noah going to move into the elite class of centers (if healthy)?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

If elite means all-star, then he has a great chance.

Mark G (Orlando)

Dave, Hope the family is well. Got to see the lakers practice last Saturday before the Magic game. Young Trey and I came away totally impressed that the best player in the gym (Kobe) was working way harder than anyone else (although Artest was close). Would love to know if LBJ is the same way, any insight? Great for my boy to see. BTW the Titans beat the Warhawks, but young Sowada played well. Need to get together!

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Dizzo!! I learned a lot about defense chasing you around Bromby and French screens in the passing game. Illegal screens, I might add. LBJ works extremely hard and studies lots of tape too. But Kobe has always been on another level. Just like his 5:30am summer workouts. Call me bro!!

Charles (Detroit)

Chauncey Billups.....greatest point guard to ever play...true or false?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

False of course. But his arc of improvement in his career is amazing.

Chris W. (NBA TV)

Keep it up, coach!

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Thanks!!

Scoop (NY)

Give us some thoughts on Jon Scheyer, coach! Is he gonna be in the NBA? I trust you on these sorts of things, you've got the eye.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I think he has a shot, but he has to get lucky for sure.

Vince Carter (Orlando Fl)

With me and Jameer playing better, do we have a legit shot to win it all this year???

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Yes you do.

Jordan (DC)

From what you've seen of Thaddeus Young, do you think he has what it takes to become a legit 20+ point scorer? Or will he be stuck as a poor man's Josh Smith?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Probably not 2o a night. But Josh Smith is a beast, so anything close would be good.

Melvin (chicago)

Coach Thorpe, do you feel like the Chicago Bulls would be better suited missing the playoffs this year and getting a lottery pick, therefore a chance at a more premier impact player to help them next year, than getting to the playoffs as the eighth seed and getting Lebron'ed in the first round?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I'm old school. Try to win every night. Period. Angering the basketball gods is never wise.

JD (NY)

David, please help me out, I ask every week: are you still working with Courtney Lee? What one thing is most important for him to work on this coming offseason? Thanks, keep up the great work.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Sorry JD, I've never seen that question. We helped him out in mid-December when he was struggling, but by the all-star break he was rolling so stopped-we'll see him again this summer I expect.

dj (klown)

coach your pick for mad march??

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

No clue. Have not watched a game yet this year, only tape.

John (Waco)

Did you miss that the Nuggets have blown out the Lakers already twice this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Magic beat LA both times last year.

Tommy (Houston, TX)

If Jordan Hill continues to put up these numbers in Houston, could he crack the top 10? Or is it too late?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Probably too late.

Keary (DUMBO, Brooklyn)

After JJ Redick, which outside shooter would say is the best model to follow in developing your shot?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

It depends on the shooter's own natural form.

Tyler (Calgary)

Is Bosh the "perfect fit" for the Thunder that you referenced earlier?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

1. Howard2. BoshWhich one can they get?

Nick (Italy)

Is Joe Alexander's NBA career over?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Not quite, but close.

Justin (Coon Rapids, MN)

Coach ThorpeCan you please explain to me what Kurt Rambis is doing? How does Kevin Love only get 9 minutes of playing time last Monday and guys like Ryan Hollins and Sasha Pavlovic played twice as long.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

?????

Dave (Phoenix)

Hey David - Thanks for these chats! Your thoughts on Dragic/Thorpe now? And as a related question - shouldn't there be some love for Alvin Gentry in the COY discussion? (Note: I tried to ask Chris Webber his opinions - but he wouldn't answer me)

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Dragic certainly looks like an NBA player now. Yes, Gentry should get some votes.

John (Los Feliz)

Worst starting player in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Gotta be Chuck Hayes, right? I love that guy, but at 6'6, he wouldn't start in the SEC at center.

Matt (SA )

Hey Thorpe! love your chats, you seem like such a down to earth kind of guy. I was wondering what you thought about George Hill, with tony Parker out he looks to really improve. What do you think his ceiling is?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I'm a big fan of Hill. He will be an excellent starting pg in this league.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I'm a big fan of Hill. He will be an excellent starting pg in this league.

Jack (Hiding from the Smoke Monster)

Can the "Princeton" offense work in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes it can, with the right modifications.

John (Los Feliz)

Has any school provided more quality pros to the NBA in the last two seasons than UCLA? Holliday, Collison, Westbrook, Love, and Mbah a Moute.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I would never want to watch them play, but he is teaching those kids how to play the right way.

MAC (UT)

Who are your top 3 GM's in the league right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

It's not fair to say because ultimately, the owners are often making calls.

Derek (Minneapolis)

Ryan Hollins is the worst starter in the NBA. End of discussion.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

As a true center, yes.

Brian (Richmond, Ky.)

Chuck Hayes started all four years at Kentucky, for the record.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

At pf, right?

cyrus (toronto)

what do you think of hollinger s suggestion to have a tournament for seeds 8 through 14?? it ll never happen right??

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Love it.

David (SoDak)

Thorpedo, love the chat so far. How do you feel about my boy Gerald Henderson, crazy explosive athlete but doesn't seem to get much of a chance. Will he be successful?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I'm worried about him. He wasn't competitive until his last season at Duke. Needs to step it up a few notches for LB.

ron (LA)

This saturday..pacquiao or clottey??????

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

As I've written before, I've not watched boxing since my Papa died in 1983.

Craig (PA)

Did you read Bill Simmons' Book of Basketball? Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I'm reading it this summer when I hit the summer leagues.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

So, what Summer film did you quote earlier?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Vacation.

Tyson (Iowa City)

What's the best book for young coaches/teachers to read?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Cheney's "Winning is an Attitude".

Alex (Denver)

Serious question. Do you see George Karl's health battles forcing him to retire at the end of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

No.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

quick! How do I get some ups?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Just keep jumping!!

Bob (Detroit)

Thorpe, always enjoy the chats, especially your humility. You set some good examples bro.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Thanks for reading. Time to go. I'll be off next week, but hit me up on Facebook (David B. Thorpe) or Twitter @coachthorpe. Have a great rest of the week and be safe!
