Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. I think I am recovered from the trip to Dallas last week for the Pacquiao fight. New notebook is up and there are also blogs this week and another coming later today. Please also check out the updated fight schedule. We have a good FNF fight tonight with the Latimore-Powell rematch and tomorrow Wladimir Klitschko defends the heavyweight title against Eddie Chambers, so we have much to discuss. Let's get to it.

Gary (Falls Church, VA)

Any word on if Golden Boy will be going ahead with the televising of Haye vs Ruiz as a free portion of the Jones Hopkins PPV as was discussed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

At this point it is unlikely, from Richard Schaefer told me.

JJD (Seattle)

That picture of Chambers and Klitschko in the notebook is priceless. Eddie looks like a middleweight next to Wlad. Do you give Chambers ANY shot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Eddie is about 5 inches shorter and will be outweighed by 35 pounds. If he was facing just a bigger man, I would give him a shot. But Klitschko is the best heavyweight in the world. I wish Eddie the best of luck, but I think Klitschko handles him.

Marc (Dussledorf via Philly)

Just came back from the weigh in with Eddie Chambers and he is expecting to win tomorrow. The Heavyweight crown is coming back to the U.S.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Good luck to him.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any chance Andrade-Lucas will be US TV coverage?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Never say never, but I would say unlikely.

chris (philly)

Hello Dan, I've never seen a boxer hit an opponent with 2 hands like Manny did this past weekend - is that really an illegal move in the boxing rule book?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Good question. I do not know of any rule that prevents it. He hit him legally with his hands. He didn't go low, didn't hit him behind the head or on the back. I have no idea why that would be considered illegal. It's actually dangerous for the fighter throwing the shots because they leave themselves open and off balance.

Charles (DFW)

Saw the Jones/Hopkins undercard. Are you kidding me? The best they can do is Juarez-Litzau and the ghost of Sergio Mora? In a fight that so many see as a lopsided joke, at least they could have gone for a better undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I agree with you but they are on a shoestring budget with that card in the first place.

Horn (Vegas)

Does Arum mention alternate opponents for Manny just to irk the boxing public?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

No, I don't think so. He was being realistic. He made it clear he'd like to make the big fight under certain circumstances (meaning they won't let Mayweather dictate the rules). If Manny doesn't fight the May 1 winner should he just retire? Of course not. So Arum is looking at other options just in case, the same way he made Clottey when the Mayweather fight didn't happen March 13. It's called being smart and prepared.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, you told a freak in last weeks chat that there was no chance an Alexander-Bradley fight would come off this year. This week Kevin Cunningham, Alexander's trainer said they were in the business of collecting belts and wanted Bradley as their next fight. You think this is serious talk or just posturing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Kevin does want that fight. I spoke to him yesterday about it. However, that doesn't mean it will happen this year. I still don't think it will. Eventually, I hope, but patience.

Wes (Philly)

The undercard last weekend was so bad you should have give Bob Arum the middle finger.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, how big is it if Fast Eddie comes away with Wlad's belts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Huge.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,I am, after all the recent cancellations and postponements, starting to feel like I did when I found out the truth about Santa and the Tooth Fairy. Two great FNF fights gone and whispers of cracks in the Super Six Tourney. I just hope the rumors of the Easter Bunny aren't going to go the same way!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

That's just part of boxing. Always has been, always will be. However, there is a chance that Cunningham-Godfrey can be salvaged for March 26. I have details in my blog later today.

James (Athens, GA)

Do Joshua Clottey and Kevin Johnson train together?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Will all respect to the great Norman Chad, pay the man, Shirley.

Pete (Salt Lake)

Is the Rigondeaux fight on the Berto undercard going to be televised?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

No, but HBO will have the options of airing highlights, which I hope they do.

Eric (DC)

Did Allan Green really call someone out for postponing a fight? Wow.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Alright Dan, assuming a Mayweather victory on May 1st...we both know that May-Manny negotiations are just going to start where they left off, with neither man budging off his stance (random vs 24 day cut off)...who needs to give a little more and what do u feel is the possible resolution? enough is enough already

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Let May 1 fight happen and then we will get into that.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Even if the Pac vs Clottey wasn't a "barn-brawler" how did the fight go over with all those 50,000+ fans inside the stadium?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I have to say that it seemed to me that everyone had a really good time. The atmosphere was awesome and the crowd was great. Top Rank really did a great job jazzing up the feeling in the stadium, from the lights, to the music to the videos on the massive screen to the Cowboys opening the roof at the end of the show. It was really cool all the way around in terms of the way everything was handled.

TO (NYC)

any news on the PPV numbers from last saturday

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

As I wrote in my blog yesterday, they're looking no worse than 650,000. Cable numbers are not all in yet, so getting a final tally isn't done yet.

James (Athens, GA)

I've had a long week. Luckily HBO is replaying Pacquiao Clottey so I should be able to get some sleep.

Kevin (Michigan)

How bad and quickly is the Super six losing it's luster? All the freaking American's except Green have had to push back a fight or drop out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Stuff happens, but it has been disappointing. I love the tournament and have been a big supporter of it, but it's no good if it drags out too long and that's the risk we are facing right now.

Mike (Nashville)

Dan the Man, What were your thoughts on the paq-clottey fight card? I thought it was horrible. I actually fell asleep twice during manny and joshua's match. I like Pac but he and Bob Arum owe me a refund for such an awful boxing show. The next time you see Bob Arum tell him he better have my money.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

The undercard completely sucked. Let me be clear: It sucked. A piece of crap. The fights sucked on paper and they were worse in the ring. In case anyone is not clear: The undercard was putrid and Top Rank owes us an apology.

John (LA)

How shocked were you that Clottey didn't even want to win the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Just befuddled. Why you would train so hard, get the opportunity of a lifetime and then DO NOTHING. Go out trying to win and at least you earn respect. Instead, he took his check and did nothing. Shame on him.

jack (fort collins)

man, the sugar man isn't so sweet anymore. maybe he's just becoming a little more curmudgeonly in his old age. or maybe he's been spending his free time with edison miranda and vic darchinyan. great line in the notebook.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Shane has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder going into the Mayweather fight, and I don't blame him. Too many people think Mayweather just walks over him, which is crazy.

Yorkis (Philly)

Where has Steve Cunningham been and why hasn't he capitalized on the momentum from the Huck and Adamek fights, which were both excellent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

He's been put on the shelf by his promoter. Make sure you read my blog on him when it is posted later.

Bobby (Louisville)

Is Mayweather rematch clause vs. Mosley official? if so, that's a shame the winner can't go straight to Pac-man!

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

From what they say, there is indeed a rematch clause.

Jimmy (Arlington, VA)

Any word on Cloud vs Johnson being rescheduled?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Nothing yet. Cloud is probably still faking his limp.

BJ (LA)

So, were you watching the Pac-Clottey undercard or the wave last Sat.?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I checked out the wave for a minute. I can honestly say that I think that was the first time I have ever seen the wave at a fight.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, will ESPN2 cover David lemieux's fight at the Uniprix stadium in June?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Maybe. I hope ESPN does because Lemiuex is a terrific prospect and an exciting young fighter with a ton of potential.

Mike (Garden City, NY)

Between this chat and the Final Four action on-line, I'm not expecting too much work to get done this afternoon...

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Good man.

BJ (LA)

Dan, Clottey was the most boring fight of Pacquiao but it still much more exciting than Mayweather-JMM.

Craig D. (Philly)

I have both HBO and Showtime, I think HBO has the better fights but would it kill them to show a ring card girl once in a while???? Sho loves giving those hotties some airtime, and I thank them for that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I agree. No idea why HBO refuses to show the ring girls. It's freakin' HBO for crying out loud. They can air reruns galore of Cat House and G-String Divas, but we can't get a ring girl once in awhile? Please!!

Rob (Philly)

Looking forward to the Pavlik v. Martinez fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Me too!

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,In your blog Arum mentioned that PBF vs SSM had a rematch clause. If Shane starches Floyd in exciting fashion do you think he'll really want "an immediate rematch?"

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Who knows.

Rick (Marina)

And what was up the Cowgirls signing the National Anthem, they were horrible, they sounded like alvin and the chipmunks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I thought they were good. And loved the Journey singer doing the Filipino anthem. Love that anthem.

Alex (Clev., OH)

Is HBO replaying the Pac Fight this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Yes, 11 pm ET on Saturday.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang Bang. Bang. Bang Bang Bang. Bang!

Matt (Seattle, WA)

This has baffled me for years... Why does the timekeeper start the clock in the final round when he knows the ref is making the fighters touch gloves, sometimes taking over 6 seconds off the clock. Sometimes this 6 seconds could make the difference! Get a clue timekeepers, start the clock after they are done touching gloves!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

The timekeeper's job is to ring the bell after the one-minute rest. Period.

John (Phoenix)

Isnt it pain-stakingly obvious that Clottey realized he couldnt handle the speed of Pacquaio and decided that he would make more money in the future fighting young talent as "the guy that went 12 with Manny" versus actually trying to win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Exactly. He was there to survive and not get drilled after he realized he had no chance.

Eric (Massachusetts)

Strange that people are acting outraged about last weeks main event. Have these people never seen a Josh Clottey fight? The fight panned out pretty much exactly as expected. If these fans want to blame anyone, blame team Pac and Top Rank for choosing and confirming Clottey as an opponent for Pac, especially in a fight titled "The Event" (credit to Jones and the stadium staff though).

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

It was even worse than usual Clottey fights. Sure, he doesn't throw a lot of punches, but that was even worse than usual.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

I'm sorry Dan I'm not sure the freaks clearly understood you. Are you saying that the undercard COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY SUCKED AND WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF SPACE. THAT IT WAS SO BAD THAT IT ALMOST MADE YOU WISH YOU WERE WATCHING A RUIZ FIGHT? Or maybe I read too much into your statement.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

You are right.

Senor Froggie Frog (Mexico)

Come on HBO!!!! Give us more Tecate Girls!! CON CARACTER!!!

Kevin (Grand Rapids, MI)

Nice to see Provodnikov back on ESPN and steppin it up with Figueroa.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I like that fight a lot. And I like Kim in the main event.

South Fork Walter ((LA, CA))

Hey Dan! It was great to finally meet you last weekend! Freak for life!

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Awesome! Great to meet you too. I have the pciture I took with you. For the Freaks who don't know what I am talking about -- so I go out to Southfork Ranch on last Saturday afternoon. Dallas is my all-time favorite TV show, so since I had a little time between the end of the Pavlik-Martinez press conference and when I needed to be at Cowboys Stadium for my first TV appearance, I went to the ranch, where the show was filmed. And I am in the gift shop they have there (buying a coffee mug and some other crap) and Walter the Freak recognizes me and comes over to introduce himself and ask for a picture with me. And I asked Walter to pose with me as well. So I ran into a Freak all the way out at Southfork, which is like 35 miles from where the media hotel was. Pretty cool.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, any thoughts on Benavidez? I, as you, thought he really looked patient and skilled. How is Bob talking about moving him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I like his size, training team, good amateur background and poise. Top Rank thinks it has a future star. They will take their time and build him the right way like they have done with a ton of prospects. He's 17. There is no rush and they won't rush him. He'll fight every month or so for the next year or so. He'll gain experience. And when the time is right, he will get the big push.

Jaymoney (dallas,tx)

IMO what went down at the Gaylord hotel was more exciting than "the event"

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

What exactly went down at the Gaylord that I am not aware of?

BJ (LA)

Dan, I was looking at the TR site and I saw this kid Mike Lee who graduated from Notre Dame and he looks interesting but can he fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No idea yet. He turns pro on a card coming up.

BJ (New Haven)

Afte reading Allen Green saying that Ward is scared of him, is there even 1 percent of you that thinks he is scared? My answer is hell no.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No way. Andre Ward fears no man. Green is just ticked off that the fight was postponed, which I can't blame him for. But he knows Andre isn't afraid of him.

Tom (Los Angeles)

Dan, why the the Norman Chad references all the time? Do you know him? Does he do anything besides commentate the World Series of Poker?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I don't know him. But I have read his columns religiously for years and he is one of the great sports columnists/humorists ever.

Romeo (DC)

How about Paul Williams fights in Verizon Center rather than the Home Depot Center?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Goossen would love to come to DC and put on a big fight with Williams at the Verizon Center but not for the May fight for a variety of reasons. I think in the future we will see him in DC.

Romeo (DC)

Clottey looked like a deer caught in the headlights last week, I would say that it was more Clottey's inability to handle the magnitude of the event and his inability to handle Manny's speed that contributed more to his loss than his lack of desire to win.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

D-T-M, So how did the Southfork visit pan out? And do you really have the "Dallas" theme as a ringtone? I would've thought you'd have the original BAD theme music!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

It was great. Took a bunch of pictures. Had blast. Bought some junk at the gift shop. Maybe I will post one of the photos with a blog. And, yes, my cell phone ring tone is indeed the theme to Dallas.

Craig D. (Philly)

Danno, do you think Jim Lampley said "Bang" more times during the fight last week than Allen Iverson said "Practice" during that one interview a couple years back?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I'll have to go back to the tapes and count.

Cory R (Fargo, ND)

I think the national anthem of Ghana is still going.....

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Hilarious. I was thinking the same thing at ringside -- that this is the longest anthem EVER.

Shane (Selah, WA)

Dan, I had a packed house for the card last weekend and the only part of the night that didn't put everyone to sleep was Lamply's classic Bang rant.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Does seeing Manny handle a legitimate welterweight in his prime with no catch-weight make you think he will have a very real chance of defeating either Floyd or Shane? I was always unsure - but now think it's 50/50 for either fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I agree.

Nigel (Chestnut Hill, MA)

Dan, I just caught Omar Henry for the first time thispast week -- he is the spitting image of Terry Norris! And not only does he look like Terrible Terry, but he'salso from Texas, fights at 154, and has the same "Seek andDestroy" mentality.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Good call. He does look a little like Norris. He's a very exciting young fighter, but raw. I had a chance to meet him and talk to him after his fight last Friday and he seems like a cool guy. I am looking forward to seeing him fight more. I'd like to see him settle down a little, use his jab, set up his shots instead of jystr going crazy when the bell rings. But he sure is fun to watch.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

Is it safe to say that Pacquiao banged his to victory over Clottey?

J (ATL)

Dan-o can you give us a brief preview of the FNF card tonight? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Good main event. Reamtch between Latimore and Powell. Latimore won the first fight on a seventh-round TKO. Was even on the cards going to the seventh. It's a title eliminator, so the winner becomes Cory Spinks' mandatory. A real must-win for both guys.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - is Hopkins / Jones 2 definitely going to into the Theaters? I am willing to pony up $15.00 and a tub of popcorn to watch those guys go at it

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Yes it is.

Pete (NYC)

I'm worried that Timmy Bradley signing with HBO will suck the life out of his career, as it did for Chad Dawson. Are you worried?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Why? Bradley now has a wealth of potential opponents in his division after the June fight. Dawson's problem wasn't that he signed with HBO. It's that he fights in a terrible division with very little in the way of a big fight.

Joe (NY)

How much is a sanctioning fee is it a % ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Typically, the organizations charge 3% of the purse, but as the purses grow larger and there are unifications and such, they often will negotiate a fee with the fighter camp. Pacquiao ain't paying 3% of a $12 million purse, for example.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, Im surprised you didnt mention Solis in the opening words. His fight didnt get canceled did it? It kills me to say it, but I think him and Peter are the best chances to beat the Ukranians. If Solis can stop eating and Peter can keep trying, thats the best out there right? Adamek and Haye just cannot stand up to the punches. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Solis indeed fights tomorrow night. Why would I mention that in my opening? It's just a fight. Decent fight, but nothing to get worked up about. Solis was a great amateur and has looked pretty good as a pro. He has a chance to do something, but the jury is out.

Ron Mexico 619 (San Diego)

DTM- Manny getting 50,000 people live and at least 650,000 PPV buys vs. an unknown like Clottey shows that he is the true star of boxing! Before Floyd fought Oscar, he was drawing 7,000 and his PPV fights only received around 450,000 buys. After looking at this, who is the REAL star in your opinion???

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

They are both stars. But I agree in one sense -- for Manny to draw 51,000 fans and at least 650,000 ppvs to fight a guy most people never heard of is amazing. Could Mayweather draw 51,000 fans and 650,000 against Clottey? NO CHANCE.

jonathan (los angeles)

do you think clottey took a dive?... i mean he hurt pacquiou with his punches.. it's just hard to imagine why he didnt throw a couple more punches knowing he can hurt pac and it being the biggest fight of his life.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

LOL. NO. If he was going to dive, why not go down in the fourth round instead of getting pounded for 12? Come on.

Barry (SF)

Who will be Donaires tune-up opponent on May 8 and is the rematch with Darchinyan finalized yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Donaire's opponent is TBA and, no, the deal to fight Vic is not done.

IRS (Everywhere)

Floyd- dont forget about April 15th this year!!!!

Chris (PA)

Only Floyd has rematch clause, correct? No rematch for Sugar if Money wins.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Right. Rematch pertains only to Floyd is Shane wins.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I'm having some trouble with the cancellation of the FNF, double championship, fight card. I don't think ESPN would advertise a fight it would, as Don King claims, "not get back to me." Can you or are you able to explain the odor from this one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

It seems to me King just refused to sign the standard ESPN contract it gives to all promoters for its cards.

Chris D. (Chicago)

I was disappointed in Clottey, but I think everyone's being a little hard on the guy. It's hard to do anything when you're being punched in the face every two seconds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I don't agree. You want to keep from being punched? Punch back. That's his job.

Greg (VA)

Could we please go one chat without comparing Pacqiauo and Mayweather? At least wait till after May 1st.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I doubt it.

Bing (Im still here)

Man that Joshua clottey is an agressive fighter

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Mayweather got over a million PPV buys against a smaller guy everyone knew he'd beat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Who happened to be the biggest name Mexican fighter out there. And they couldn't sell out a 16,000-seat arena.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

I hear Morales is calling out Manny I guess the two brutal beatings were not enough. Manny has put almost as many Mexicans to sleep as tequilla

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He is and it's a joke. He will never get another fight with Manny and why would he? He's a dead man at this point.

ivan (orlando,fl) [via mobile]

So Dan how was your experience at "the event" last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

It was great. One of coolest fights I have covered. A great experience that I won't forget.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Another firday and I'm happy to be here! What wieght is paul Williams-Kermit Cintron fight going to be held at?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Somebody didn't read the notebook. 154.

naslund (New York)

was at pac-clottey last week, and while the fight wasn't terribly exciting, that stadium is AWESOME! and how cool was it that jerry opened up the roof before the 12th round?!? while the tv undercards sucked, the pre-tv fights weren't bad--that kid from dallas (i think he's top rank) looks legit!

Chris (PA)

Plus PBF-JMM didn't have a 600 ton HDTV.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Keep this in mind too, and it can't be understated: Pacquiao-Clottey did not have a "24/7" series hyping it for a month like Mayweather-Marquez did.

Dan (Buffalo)

Did Corey Spinks being out of shape play a hand in DK canceling next weeks card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Not to my knowledge.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, whats up another website is talking about a 12-man hbo "140 lb unification tournament", with actual quarter final, semi-final rounds, etc. as if it were an official tournament like the super six. i know hbo is putting together all these great 140 lb fights, but it was my understanding that it was not an official tournament per se. i wont believe until i hear it from you.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Wherever you read that is is simply not true. Complete BS.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

The only way to get change in boxing is to let the powers that be know what the fans want. That being said I sent SEVERAL emails to Top Rank letting them, know what a horrible undercard they had for the Pac-Clottey fight and I encourage all boxing freaks to do the same. Let our voices be heard!!!

Ron Mexico 619 (San Diego)

DTM- Imagine the crowd Manny vs. Marquez/Margarito would get in Cowboys stadium if they fought either around Cinco de Mayo or Mexican Independence Day??? Can you say 75,000 screaming fans all waving their flags?????

BJ (LA)

Dan, why do you hate Mayweather so much? Ok. We got that out of the way so we can all move on now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

LOL.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, have you ever met Ariza? He is always popping off in the media, but I never know who he is when I watch the pressers and such. Does he walk out to the ring with Manny?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Sure, I have met him many, many times. He walks out with Manny. He has is one of Freddie's assistants and is the strength and conditioning coach for Manny and some of Freddie's other fighters.

Luis (Philadelphia)

Any news on the possible Alexander/Judah fight? Or do you think Alexander will go another route?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

That's a fight HBO would like to do and the Alexander camp would like the fight as well. However, from what I am told there are issues between King and Judah with King claiming Judah owes him all kinds of money (more than $1 million from what I was told). There is also the dicey issue of Judah's promotional rights. Square Ring claims to have a contract with him. So if Judah is all jammed up, the Alexander people won't wait around for him. They'll moved on and perhaps fight the winner of the March 27 Maidana-Cayo fight that is on HBO.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Gettin pretty sick of the Pac-Mayweather Popularity Contest...just sayin

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

You? I've been sick to death of it for a year.

DeMarcus Black (Vegas)

For the record Dan, I'm a big Floyd guy BUT I agree with basically everything you've ever written about him. There are a few reasonable Floyd fans out there (or maybe just 1 or 2)

Roy (Reno)

Read the notebook and I am confused. I thought Brinkley vs. Stevens was for the title eliminator? What gives?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Brinkly-Stevens was an IBF eliminator for the No. 2 spot in the rankings. Brinkley-Bika is for No. 1 and the mandatory position.

Luke (Tatooine)

Dan. What's your official prediction of Klitschko/Chambers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Klitschko by mid-rounds knockout.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Happy Friday, Dan. Don King is really starting to irritate me. May not be his fault, but now we have the FNF main event being called off. Very frustrating. I was looking forwad to that fight.

Eric (Omaha)

Dan - What was better last weekend: the fight or the experience of Cowboy Stadium?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

What do you think?

Horn (Vegas)

From now on, every time I accomplish something at work, I'm going to scream BANG! Gotta love Lamps.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Ok Dan, so your sick of the Floyd/Manny popularity contest, but you post those questions up like crazy in your chat & actively participate in the "whose more popular" debate? I don't get it..

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Because a massive percentage of the questions and comments I receive are on that topic and I am here to discuss what the Freaks most want to talk about that has been Pacquiao-Mayweather stuff for months.

Kris Krepps (GR)

It should of been called "UNEVENTFUL"

Steve (Minnesota)

Since Judah did 100,000 PPV buys for his last fight you'd think he'd have tons of money to go around.....

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Good one. If he did 10,000 on ppv for his last fight that would be a lot.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

I will say this about the Paquiao/Clottey fight.... At least the judges got the decision right this time!

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

YES! Thank goodness for small favors. I heard Gale Van Hoy was scoring for fun and had it for Clottey by two points.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

By the way -- here's an update on the Cunningham-Godfrey fight:

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

There's a chance -- and it was fluid on Friday morning -- that Main Events can salvage the fight for March 26 by moving it to the top of a previously untelevised card in Chicago being promoted by Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions. Main Events came in second in the purse bid and now owns the fight since Don King has defaulted. Main Events, Pesoli and ESPN are working through the logistics. So there's a good chance Cunningham-Godfrey will still happen March 26 on FNF just with a new promoter at a new location.

Steve (Minnesota)

Whatever happened to "The American Dream" Ronald Johnson? Wasn't there a big dust up about him offering Dawson 2 million to fight him? Is this guy just a big fraud or what?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

F-R-A-U-D.

MC (USA)

Hey DanIs there a co-feature to the Khan Malignaggi fight in May?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Yes, Victor Ortiz vs. Nate Campbell.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

I think this is a fair question to ask with King getting up there in years...is there a succession plan in place at DKP? It seems like there is at Top Rank, but Don King seems to be most, if not all, of DKP.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

When Don goes, so does DKP it seems. There is no legitimate succession plan in place.

Michael (Philadelphia)

Wow, an entire chat without anybody mentioning the "Love Child"

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Probably training hard for his April 24 fight with Perro Angulo.

Jim Lampley (Dallas)

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Roy (Reno)

So does fighters have to pay sanctioning fees for #2 eliminators?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Of course.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Big D, If Kevin Johnson and Joshua Clottey had a child would they name him a.) John Ruiz II, or b.) Anbien (sleeping pill) ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Gus (New City, NY)

How is Jones/Hopkins a PPV fight? Don't the powers that be realize this is what is killing the sport for the general sports fan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Are we really going to go over this yet again? It's the marketplace. The networks didn't want it. So it goes on PPV. They will make what they can sell. If people want to see it, they'll buy it. If not, it will tank and they will lose money. It's not killing boxing. If you dont want to see it, don't buy it.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Does boxing allow its fighters to weigh in under the limit and still fight within the division? Like if Chambers were to cut down to 195 lbs, would he still be allowed to fight Wlad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Yes. You only can't be over the limit for a fight.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, If we can dream a little here for a moment.....! Let's say Pac vs PBF gets signed, sealed, and delivered....with both nstill undefeated. Where would you want to see the fight held? And where do you think it'll actually be held?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

It would incredible at Cowboys Stadium and would draw 100,000 I truly believe.

Tim (Atlanta)

Dan, Theatre tickets for Hopkins/Jones are set at $20 plus a service charge if you order them online. This is quite an increase in prices from Mayweather/Marquez.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, the Marquez-Vazquez IV tickets go onsale here in LA. Do you think either fighter has anything left? I watched both of their last fights and they both looked like they were shells of their former selves.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Whatever they have left, they are at least on an even playing field. Here is the ticket info: Tickets, priced at $250, $125, $75, $50 and $25 will be available starting Friday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m. PT online at ticketmaster.com, via Ticketmaster charge-by-phone lines at (800)745-3000. Tickets will also be available starting Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. PT at the STAPLES Center Box Office.

Bo Bo Brazil (Detroit, Mi.)

Mr. Rafael,Last week mI embarassed myself by stating "Clottey ko's Pac in 1o!" I apologize to the freaks. To0o many co-co head butts over the years!!!

giuseppe (bucks)

any word on future fights for Tarver? Is he a HOF in your opinion? He is great on Sho.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Nothing that I am aware of. There was some talk of him fighting James Toney, but nothing ever came of it. I think Tarver is a borderline HOFer. He'll get some support but at this point, I am not inclined to vote for him.

Jake (Alaska)

Better Trilogy, Bowe v Holyfield or Marquez v Vazquez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

For pure action, probably Vazquez-Marquez, but Bowe-Holyfield trilogy is awesome as well. I think Bowe-Holyfield has more overall appeal to casual fans here because both guys are American and they are heavyweights.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,I agree with Dallas being a great place to hold a possible Pac vs PBF fight but realistically where do you think the fight ends up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I think if the fight happens, Dallas will definitely be in the running. That stadium and the fact that Jerry Jones offered $25 million make it a player.

DeMarcus Black (Vegas)

Dan, would you agree that Kevin Cunningham is one of the most underrated trainers in the game?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Yes, I have been saying that for years.

Josh (NYC)

Last Saturday night there was virtually a tornado in NY, I went to watch the fight at a Bar on 33rd St. All three floors were packed with Americans who came out and paid $20 on one of the nastiest nights I can ever remember to watch a Filipino fight a Unknown fighter from Africa. The bar a few door's down was also packed. And of course boxing is dead - Ye right.

R! (Yay Area)

So are Spinks and USS's fights being reschedule or have they been scrapped?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

As I just wrote, Cunningham-Godfrey may be salvaged for March 26. Not the Spinks fight.

ac (la)

Dan, which is better, watching Pac-Clottey fight, or watching Pacman concert?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

The concert.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, Gatti-Ward trilogy the best one ever in your opinion? What would be the next best?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

It's one of the best. You have Bowe-Holyfield, Vazquez-Marquez, Barrera-Morales and, of course, Ali-Frazier, in the conversation, among others.

DeMarcus Black (Vegas)

Dan, the Bobfather HAD to be a little embarrassed about the way the undercard fights turned out last week right? Did he say anything to you about it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

He told me later that he thought they would be better than he turned out. To his credit, he admitted they did not turn out well.

Devale (Chicago)

Hey Dan, whats next for Lamont Petersen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

He has a fight on a Top Rank Live undercard next month and then, if he wins, a good chance he will fight Edwin Valero. HBO and Showtime are both interested in the fight from what I am told.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Any new word on Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Let me check my milk carton.

Rob (Halifx, Canada)

Tarver a borderline HOFer? Ur joking right...You must be having a Bing moment

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I didn't say I would vote him in, but he IS borderline because I do think he will have some support.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

And if Jim Lampley and Lennox Lewis had a child it's first words would be "bang,"........."definately,"............"bang"........definately,"......."absolutely"......."BANG!"

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Hilarious.

todd ((sf, calif))

what's your take on castillo making the ibhof? in the wake of his retirement, i've read a few articles mentioning his candidacy as "borderline" or "potentially". does a good career highlighted by one historic fight put him over the top?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

No way should Castillo make the HOF. That would be a disgrace.

Jake (Alaska)

Do you have Arum's fax number, i wanted to scan my middle finger and send it to him.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

and if Norman Chad and Tiger Woods had a kid it's first words would be: "pay the girl....Shirley!"

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Tarver will get support from "Rocky Balboa" fans.

Dre (Miami, Florida)

Dan, you say 51K makes Pacquiao the face of boxing. Why not Wladimir, who did 65K last summer and is doing another 50K tommorow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Wlad is popular in one or two places. Manny is global in terms of popularity.

Steve (NYC)

When is Larry Merchant's next HBO telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I believe he will be handling the April 10 Berto fight and April 17 Pavlik fight.

Keith H (Seattle)

Freak chat, Simmons chat, March Madness...Not much getting done at the office today.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

And why would you?

Jake (Arl Hts, Il)

Danimal,Was Dallas comparable to Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Not in any way.

Christian (Miramar, FL)

Just wanted to give you props on answering the star question. You get hit a lot by PBF fans for being biased so I thought you'd avoid it. You tell it like it is and your giving a voice to most real boxing fans out there. PBF sees himself as a money maker more than he does a fighter, its a conscious decision he's made and he should be prepared to answer the criticism that goes along with that. Its too bad he cant be like DLH and try to be both while fighting the best out there.

Brandon (Dallas)

Are there commissions other than New York that are seriously considering adding stricter PED testing? Do you see other commissions like Nevada following New York's lead?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I think eventually (but it will take time) we will see commissions make their drug testing stricter. They should, like all sports.

Jackson (IA)

Tarver being a borderline HOFer is really a great example of how much timing plays in this sport. Caught RJ at the right time, and that's about it...

Gordon (NYC)

Was there alot to do in Dallas before/after the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

We were not in a busy area. We were at a hotel sorta near the airport, so there was not a whole lot to do. But I was busy working anyway, although, like we discussed earlier in the chat, I had the opportunity to go see Southfork Ranch, which I really enjoyed.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

HBO usually has a live fight to go with a PPV replay, don't they?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Sometimes, sometimes not. This Saturday is a not.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm 1 GREAT thing about last week was the walk up to the ring.....they had smoke and sparks shooting and the music was loud, these are little things but adds to the moment and the hype of the fight do you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Agree 100 percent and that was all because Top Rank wanted to make the in-arena experience memorable for fans, and they did. Top Rank didn't need to spend the money on that sort of stuff, but it did and I applaud them for it. Glad you noticed.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, they are talking about drug testing on ESPN's First Take, and Skip Bayless and Co. are debating whether Mayweather vs. Mosley's USADA drug testing will hurt or help a potential Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I don't think it helps or hurts.

Greg (DC)

Do you see Pacquiao ever fighting Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I would never say never, but probably not. Berto is not a big name and has no really big fan base AND he is not with Top Rank. But you never know. Top Rank and Lou DiBella have done business together and they get along, so I guess it is possible down the road.

bill (pgh)

is FNF going dark on March 26th since the King card was cancelled?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

TBA. Like I said earlier, we might still have Cunningham-Godfrey. Go look at the transcript of this chat for the details.

DeMarcus Black (Vegas)

Don't forget, Tarver also won a MD over Elvir Muriqi. That might push him over the top. And he held the prestigious IBO belt for awhile.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

My bad. How could I forget such legendary accomplishments.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Hi Dan, how did Tim Bradley's camp go about choosing his opponent for his non title fight? Seems like a tough challenge for a non title affair. Pretty much unheard of nowadays. Gotta love Bradley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I think the fact that Abregu is not particularly fast, has a great record, makes entertaining fights but gets hit with everything and that he is also with Gary Shaw -- that all went into it I am sure.

Smitty (Taunton Massachusetts)

Huh? Didn't you just say Dallas would be the place for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight? Then you say it (Dallas) wasn't comparible to Vegas? Which is it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I said Dallas would be a great place for the fight but that doesn't mean that Dallas and Vegas are similar. They are not.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm do you listen to the telecast somehow when you are at the fights or just watch and hear the crowd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Just the crowd. I have no access to the telecast until I get home and watch it on the DVR.

ztrain (oxford/ma)

edwin rodriguez on fnf and gonna show hes dan rafaels next POY

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I will be watching closely.

chris (oklahoma city)

Dan, thanks for taking the time out to take a pic with me at the fight. Did Kieran forward that on to you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Yes he did. Great to meet many of the Freaks who were at the fight.

John Ruiz (Bed)

I thought Clottey looked incredibly active.

Captain Obvious (USA)

Dan, are you as blind as the rest of these fools? I think it is quite obvious why Clottey REFUSED to let his hands go...He had Bob Arum in his back pocket. Think about it...If Manny loses there goes the MEGA FIGHT! I thought it was quite clear that when Clottey threw he was landing some solid puches, epsecially the upper cut. His unwillingenss to throw makes me believe that there is some foul play here.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

You're a fool.

M. Smith (Colebrook New Hampshire)

Mr. Rafael,I recently discovered this chat and ESPN's Boxing website. I see there are a lot of references to freaks. I know this is meant as a term of endearment and a compliment. Is there a definition of what a freak is? And how does one become a freak?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

OK, Freaks, you explain that one.

Nigel (Chestnut Hill, MA)

Dan, I caught the half-hour PPV preview show for Jones-Hopkins (on my cable system's On Demand) and they included one quote from you. How long was your interview with them? Obviously, they cut out all the disparaging comments from the writers in the promo show.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Honestly, I don't even recall taping an interview for that show.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

How do you think Cintron matches up against Paul Williams? I don't see it going to well for Kermit, especially after Kermit's non effort against a common opponent, Sergio Martinez.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I think he's a decent opponent for him and it probably will be a nice fight, but I think Williams is just a better, bigger, busier fighter and will win.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

BANG BANG BANG ... ANOTHER ONE BANG BANG ...

Steven (Red Bank, NJ)

Hey Dan... Thoughts on Khan vs. Malignaggi. Could GBP have found someone with less KO ability than "The Magic Man" for Amir to make his stateside debut?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I like the matchup, and the fact that Paulie is not a puncher of course was part of the reason they made the fight. But that doesn't mean it won't be a fun promotion and a good fight.

John (Phoenix)

A freak watches fights that are in Spanish even if they dont speak it. A freak takes his spouse to a nice dinner and gets her loaded so he can watch the Telemundo, ESPN, and Showbox tripleheaders from 11:00-2:00 in the morning on Tivo. A freak misses 3 hours a work each Friday chatting. A freak is a freak. Its not something that has rules, its jsut something you are or you are not.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Well said.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

A Freak plans his wedding around the fight schedule.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

So Dzinziruk signs with Gary Shaw and gets put right in a tough tuneup against an undefeated prospect. I say it all the time - love how Gary Shaw is unafraid to match his fighters tough.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Say what you want about Shaw, but he has always been willing to put his guys in.

Matt (Spokane)

A freak knows what LC stands for

Matt (Spokane)

You are a freak if you ignore the NCAA tourney to take part in this chat. You are a freak if you have this chat time posted on your weekly calendar. You are a freak if you know who Bing is. If you ask Dan why he hates Mayweather so much, you are a banished freak.

Chris D. (Chicago)

A freak loves Dan and hates Bing. I'm not a freak because I love Bing and just kinda like Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

LOL! So what else makes somebody a Fight Freak?

James (Athens, GA)

If you're paying more attention to this chat than March Madness, you are probably a freak.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

M.Smith, stick around for 4 or 5 years and you'll understand....

Jim Lampley (Ringside)

And Rafael is still typing BANG, BANG.......and another one.......BANG. He just doesnt stop!!!!!

Angel (Carson City, NV)

Saul Alvarez looked sensational in his fight a couple weekends ago. Who do you think would make a good opponent for the Moslely - Mayweather undercard? How about Anwone Smith or Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Those would both be interesting fights but they won't happen. First off, they both have other fights scheduled (Smith on April 10 and Jones on April 17). Second, they are not going to match prospect against prospect at this stage when there is money to be made down the road. They want an opponent Alvarez can beat but a guy who might give him experience who has a little bit of a name.

Married (At work)

I actually did postpone my wedding date 5-2-09 so i wouldn't miss Hatton Vs Manny. Thinking back on it, Boxers need to concider these things when they rechedule their fights

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

A freak knows where James Kirkland is currently residing and why he doesn't have a fight scheduled.

Jake (Arl Hts,IL)

Correction about Freaks, we get our wives to love boxing too!

Brooks (Cleveland, OH)

Freak Definition - someone who loves the sport of boxing & tries to read all notebooks and blogs before posting a chat question and checks the schedule daily. Also generally despises bad judges and corrupt sanctioning organizations. Also, freaks can be somewhat biased and emotional at times and like to accuse Dan of favoring and/or hating a fighter/manager/promoter/network/etc.

Brent (Detroit)

A freak is someone that gags in his mouth whenever someone like Michael Wilbon makes another completely clueless statement about boxing on the airwaves...

Jr (San Jose)

The IRS has a rematch clause versus Floyd too.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

A freak knows what a Swamp Donkey is.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

A freak can correctly spell Malignaggi, Klitschko, and Pacquiao.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Why did Telefutura change their time for Solo Boxeo? Now it's possible that some Friday nights will have a FNF at 10pm, Shobox at 11pm, Telefutura at 11:30, and Telemundo at 11:35.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Obviously, because the new time works better for the network.

Chris (Boise)

A Freak is somebody who knows just exactly how many Ricky Hattons are floating around out there.

James (Athens, GA)

A freak wouldn't mess with a shower door.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Pacman would DESTROY Berto.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I don't think we're going to find out. I would not say destroy, by the way.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

A Freak is someone who has a Muhammad Ali FATHEAD on his living room wall!

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Nice.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Think Pacquiao-Valero would be competitive?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Not sure, but I think it would be fun. You know they would be going at it for however long it lasted.

Pat (Buffalo)

Dan - what would you rather have - a bobblehead or action figure in your likeness?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Action figure!! With good accessories!!

Ankur (New Jersey)

Dan, who was the last fighter to score a knockdown on Pac-Mam?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I guess it would be Marquez.

Pete (Salt Lake )

A freak is someone who knows how Joel Julio became the "Love Child"

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

andrew gurland (fort lee)

a freak is someone who leaves his wife in the hospital after she gives a birth, and watches 3 tivo'd fights. then he returns and pretends he was getting the nursery ready.

chris (Oklahoma City)

A fight freak can spot Fernando Vargas or Naseem Hamed out of a crowd, even though their double the size of their fighting days

Jim Lampley (Texas)

BANG, BANG, BANG!! WANT SOME MORE? BANG BANG!

Tim (St. Lou)

I really didn't understand all of the hoopla about the fight last week. I never had any intentions of paying for that-it turned out how everyone thought it would, only worse. May-Mos is so much better of a match-up.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

More power to you, smarty.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

A freak knows both versions of "Popo" and "Thunder" and has huge respect for Mrs DTM...

Stan (New Jersey)

Dan, what are your thoughts on Sam Peter's future? I think him vs the winner of Adamek VS Arreola would be awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

I think Sam can still be a serious factor at heavyweight if he continues to be in the kind of shape he's been in for his last few fights. Him against that winner would be a terrific fight, but I don't see that because Sam is in position for a title fight or at least a final eliminator that would not involve either of them.

chris (oklahoma city)

A freak doesn't drink his own urine, but knows of a boxer that does

Michael (Oakland)

Clottey claims that his no-show was due to him having and I quote...The Stomach Runs.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

S--- happens.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

A freak never has to ask for OT.. Also a freak knows where the notebook is!

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

A freak is someone who pays for HBO and Showtime if only to watch the fights. Freaks share a common opinion on the santioning bodys (especially the WBA and there multi titles in the same weight division). A freak knows why Arum gives the finger to certain boxing writers. Freaks know that press confernces are not just another way promotions make money (Shout out to Bing)

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

A freak reads the notebooks before asking questionsA freak does not ask when Mike Tyson is fighting again and state that if only he could get into shape, he'd be a dominant heavyweight champ.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Freaks have WAY too much meaningless boxing memoribilia and name their pets after exciting 130 pound fighters!!

Jeremy (NY)

Outside of "Bang", didnt all the HBO commentators seem a lil off? Comparing Pacquiao to Dave Chapelle & Rachel Maddow from Max? Manny seems like a shill for Clottey at times too.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I typically love the HBO announcers, but I thought as a whole they had a bad night.

Shawn (Tempe)

Dan the Man action figure with kung fu grip!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

That would rule.

JE (IN)

When looking to further their education a FREAK knows not to pursue Winky Wrights business school

Vinod (NYC)

Any word on when Cotto-Foreman tickets go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Nothing yet, because there has not been a formal announcement yet of the fight. Top Rank has been a little busy with the Dallas fight. But I'm sure the announcement and tickets will come soon.

M. Smith (Colebrook New Hampshire)

Mr. Rafael,I would like to thank you and the freaks for the explanations and the definitions. May I submit my application to become a freak? I'll promise loyality to boxing and to this chat and the great people!

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Just follow boxing every day, keep up to date with the notebooks, blogs and schedule and watch everything, and you will be OK.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Being a Freak is a state of mind!

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

A fight freak knows how many Ricky Hattons there are.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I am told just one? Right?

Joe (New Jersey)

Pac and Roach both say they would follow what ever testing boxing's governing body requires. Any chance of the Nevada Boxing Commission stepping in and requiring random blood tests? To get this HUGE fight to happen. I truly believe then that Pac would submit. I think his only problem is that Mayweather is trying to call the shots.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

You're right. If Nevada updated its rules and required random blood testing and the fight was going to be in Nevada, I have no doubt Pacquiao would follow the commission rules.

Jake (Alaska)

Dan i lost the little plastic laptop for my Dan The Man Action figure!

Pete (Salt Lake)

Dan when your at press row can you here the tv announcers? Or did you have to watch the tape afterwards to hear lamply's Emeril impersonation? BANG!

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

You can hear them sometimes.

BJ (New Haven)

Dan got busy at work, so I missed an hour of the chat and just came back on thinking the chat would be over. But your still going! I love it! You the man!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Michael (Oakland)

Which way are to leaning in the Khan-Malignaggi scrap?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I give Paulie a solid shot. He's up for the fight. He's at home. He knows how big of an opportunity it is. But I have to go with Khan, who is just as fast (probably faster) and much better puncher.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

JMM scored a knockdown against Manny? I don't recall that. Which fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

My bad. Pacquiao knocked him down.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

A freak knows that breaking news can happen during a chat with a ring from the Bat Phone.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Ain't that the truth.

Pete (Salt Lake)

IF anyone doesn't know what all the BANGing is about check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEJ8qRDO9Ko&feature=related

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

That is legendary.

chuzen (st. louis)

do you think either vazquez or marquez will be part of arum's plan to have his "horses clean out the division"?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I think the winner of that fight could get another nice payday to face one of the younger guys like a Lopez or Gamboa. The winner has the name and the respect from the public. And that's how boxing goes -- an older name guy facing a younger guy on the way up who hopes to make a name by beating the more famous opponent. I can definitely see that happening here.

Bat Phone (Dan's Office)

RING.....RING.....RING....

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

BANG...BANG...BANG...

BJ (LA)

What was the crowds reaction when Top Rank showed the montage of those great fights on the Jerrytron?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Huge reaction. The video before the fight was incredible.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Isn't Sam Peter a mandatory for Wlad now? Think he would pose any new problems if they rematched?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Not yet. His win last week was for the IBF No. 2 spot.

brian (scottsdale, az)

a freak understands what an abomination having Billy Dib in Fight night Rd 4 is and why.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Hope you check out the notebook and blogs and enjoy the fights this weekend. And, just to let you know, I will appear on Friday Night Fights tonight via Skype. Talk to you next week. Peace.
