Pat can you do me one favor? from now on don't put any comments or questions up about any panther fan thinking that it would be a smart decision if the panthers trade williams or stewart for draft picks. Trading one of them for any draft pick makes no sense. Its clear to me that fans who think that probably have the IQ of Julius Peppers
Tell you what Ken, in just a few minutes a whole column is going to pop up on the blog, explaining why DeAngelo and Stewart aren't going anywhere. Last I knew it was scheduled to go up at 1 p.m. ET. Check it out.
Pat I thought the chat was supposed to be going already...?
Chat is up and running now -- 10 minutes early.
Pat, what's this latest rumor about Fox going to Cleveland? (can't say it's unfounded, it's part of ESPN insider)
Different rules on rumors for us and ESPN Insider. Not saying it definitely won't happen, but we're a year away from that even being a possibility. At this point, Fox is under contract to Panthers for this year, so anything else is pure speculation
Did you do anything special for St. Patricks Day, Pat?
Matter of fact, I hung out with some friends in Tampa and had the pleasure to meet former Steelers and Redskins linebacker John Reger. He played in the 1950s and 60s and made three Pro Bowls. He lives here in Tampa and is in great shape for his late 70s and what a nice man.
is substance to the rumors of reggie to Seattle for 1 of their 1st round picks?
Think the Saints have been pretty clear Reggie's not going anywhere.
if a restricted free agent gets picked up by another team AFTER the draft, do we get the pick for NEXT year's draft? is that why there hasn't been a lot of action because team's would rather have their picks this year and not too worried about the next draft yet?
No, restricted free agency ends a week or so before the draft. So it's not an issue.
Now that Jake Dehomme has been signed. Who is the best person to back up Drew Brees?
Love the blog Pat! Outside of the obvious DT and WR needs, what other needs do you think the BUCCs will try to address in the draft? Thanks and keep up the good work man!
DE would be another area that pops to mind.
I heard a rumor that the bucs were thinking about swapping 1st rounders with the broncos and the bucs getting Marshall. Just wondering if you heard anything and what your take is on that.
Have heard the rumors, too. But there is nothing that I've heard to confirm they are true. Might be wishful thinking by fans. But you never know.
Pat, Do you see Aaron Sears making it back and being a starter next season. He looked great before his sabatical.
Everything I hear is he's doing well and Bucs are counting on him to start.
When are the BUCS going to get any recievers? They will have a hard time this year with out an impoved WR core.
Wish I knew. But I'm sure they know they've got a glaring need there. Not sure when it will happen, but I'm sure they will do something significant at WR.
What in the world in going on with Jamaal Anderson? Is it possible to ship him for some draft picks?
No offense, but what makes you think Jamaal Anderson has any value in a trade?
are you pulling for dan connor to start
Think that's pretty much a given.
do you think the bucs could land brandon spikes in the 2nd round?
After that 40 time he punched out the other day, it's possible.
I'm also actually curious about the chances of the Bucs trading down (not exactly for Marshall, but in generall). They are a bit of a frugal team and are proud of having 10 picks. Why not trade down, have a cheaper first rounder, and have 11 picks over all?
Entirely possible. But problem this year is not many teams want to trade up.
What are your ideas on Tebow and the Panthers? Think it will happen?
They seem to be showing a lot of interest in him. Personally, I think it would be a big mistake if they do. I think he's a project and not someone who would help them right away. I think Fox and Hurney can only afford to worry about this year.
Do you think the Falcons will pick up a DT to go beside Jerry, to get a better push up the middle and to strengthen the rotation.
Think they've already got a very good DT in Babineaux.
Hey Pat, I know the bucs receiving core doesnt look to good, but if Reggie Brown, and Mark Bradley pans out, with the addition of a receiver in the draft and stroughter, i think that it may work. What are your thoughts?
Those might be decent 3-4-5 guys. But they need a No. 1 and maybe a No. 2.
Pat, how's your bracket looking after the first day of the tournament?
Can honestly say I haven't missed a game yet -- but that's only because I didn't have time to do a bracket this year. Villanova would have been my pick to win it all though.
why wont the bucs spend$$$$ it takes for big names when they hav it to spend
That's the question everybody asks. Only the Glazers can really answer it. We'll see if they talk at the NFL meeting in Orlando next week.
Any update on Darren Sharper and the Saints? Have they started any negotiations on a deal?
Quiet from what I've heard. But I think this is playing out just the way Saints wanted. Doesn't seem like other teams are banging down the door to get Sharper.
Glad that you are taking time to talk NFC South during March Madness but do you follow the tourney even without Penn State.
Not really. I'll watch some of the early games here and there, but I won't really watch closely until it gets down to the Final Four.
Pat,I understand that you think the Panthers need big-time DTs to run Fox's system, but is that the case anymore? It seems like they are going more towards the Meeks cover-2 - and the signing of Johnson just exemplifies this. With the tremendous success the Panthers D had over the last half of 2009, with the DT combo of THomas and Lewis, why do you think they cannot be successful with the one's on their roster in 2010?
Not saying they need to go out and get Haynesworth or Kris Jenkins. But wouldn't it be nice to at least go into the season with one quality DT?
Glad I could make it back into one of your chat's Pat, Love reading the transcripts when they're done. Anyway, Have you heard anything about Chase Daniels? I like what Green Bay did with Aaron Rogers by developing him for 4-5 years and I could see the Saints needing to do that. Brees is our starter now, but 5 years from now, he may be looking at retirement. Chase did good in College, so does he look like he can compete in the NFL?
Don't get your hopes too high. Aaron Rogers was a first-round pick. Daniel is a total project. Yes, he could turn into something in time. But it's a reach at this point to think he can be a starter.
Regardless of if there's an offer on the table for Darren Sharper or not, do you think the Saints would still be obligated to give him some kind of pay increase?
I'd say that would be common decency after what he did for them last year.
Pat, I realize the Bucs are being a little tight, but come on. Who would they spend the cash on? They tried for fat albert and "lost". People are praising the Skins for not spending. Geez
Pat why do people act like Hovan and Simms pathetic play doesn't have an effect on Rudd making tackles 5 yards off the line?If he didn't have to shed Hovan or Simms man he would be able to make plays closer to the line and even behind it.
Thank you for bringing that up. Think that's a very valid point and think DT is a huge weakness in TB. In fact, somebody asked early who is the most overrated NFC South player on the defensive side. I didn't answer the question at the time. But this just prompted my answer. I'd point to Hovan and Sims.
do you think there will be any way the Bill Cowher will be comming to carolina as head coach. He is living there in NC and would be a great coach with a defense mind, and loves to run the ball.
Fox is still coaching the Panthers this year. Let's see what the man does before we go replacing him.
Have you seen the Bucs upcoming schedule? Mix that with Freeman getting comfortable in his second year and the defense mastering the cover 2...I smell playoffs. Are my hopes too high?
History has shown anything's possible in the NFC South. But you might want to curb your enthusiasm just a bit.
Speaking of Rudd. How come the Bucs haven't paid him yet?
Simply because they don't HAVE to. They simply tagged him as a restricted free agent.
Tank Tyler is a beast, Pat. KC did not provide the opportunity to showcase his talents, then they drafted Dorsey and switched to the 3-4. That is the only reason he became expendable and was able to be traded to the Panthers on the cheap. I went to NC State, and have seen what he can do first hand. Give him some time to get to know Meeks' system and get through a Spartanburg training camp and he will surprise you. I think that Tyler can clog the running lanes, and Irvin can apply pressure on the QB.
In Tank we trust.
Hey Pat, Im from Tunkhannock so you have to answer my question Plz. Can you see Golden Tate still there in the second rd. or is he long gone by then? I think he would be a great Wr the Bucs could really use!
Were you a Tunkhannock Tiger??? I've seen some draft gurus say he could last into second round. If Bucs get a shot at him, take him.
Carolina owner Richardson is the point man for the labor negotiations. He wants to go in from a position of strength, with low payroll and no large long-term contracts. But isn't he sacrificing the Panthers season for the NFL's benefit? Shouldn't the Panther fans feel cheated?
Could view it that way and you might be right. But let's see how it all plays out first.
Have you heard anything about Dallas looking into Tyson Clabo of the Falcons or the steelers looking at Jason Snelling?
No, I have not, but it wouldn't surprise me. Trend right now is for teams to look at restricted guys and those two could make some sense for several teams.
Planning on picking up Drew Brees' book?
Yep, pretty sure I will. Should be interesting.
do you know if the tampa bay bucs can trade for brandon marshall
They can. But I don't know if they will.
What you think about the Georgia Dome & Getting a New staduim in Atlanta?
I think it will happen in the next few years. But the labor uncertainty probably means it will drag on a bit. But Falcons are definitely working for a new home.
Hey Pat. Now that Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson have found other homes, the pool for available qbs is pretty thin. Do you think Carolina will look to the draft now in order to find some competition for Moore?
I think they'll re-sign Josh McCown before all is said and done.
Pat, bigger need for Saints, outside linebacker, or defensive end/tackle?
I'd say DE.
Pat i think the Bucs signing Sean Jones was a huge upgrade over Sabby because of the 20 plus missed tackles and his penchant for losing his man in coverages. Jones brings a sure tackler and at the least solid coverage what are your thoughts on it.
Just about anyone would have been an upgrade there. Jones is solid. Like the move.
Do you know who they call 'The Cajun Cannon' ?
My buddy, Bobby Hebert.
Any new news or something to look for with the atlanta Falcons
Two words: The draft.
I have heard a lot of Tampa fans bashing Aqib Talib lateley; sure he punched a cap driver, but I see him as one of the top 5 Corners in the league. Is this just mor ranting by the hostle Buc fans?
Not sure about top 5, but Talib is a very good player. Just has to take care of business and stay focused on football.
Did you see that the Saints are taking away 1,500 seats in the Superdome for a renovated press box? I know you'll enjoy the new press box but what do you think about the season ticket holders losing their seats?
Haven't seen specifics on this. But my understanding was the press box was being moved up higher to make the prime real estate into luxury suites. That press box had one of the best views in the league. Don't think the new one will be as good -- or at least as close to the action.
So still on the Rudd situation, how does that work? is there a set date he has to be signed by?
A week or so before the draft is deadline for other teams to make offers to RFAs. If he doesn't get any offer, he stays with Bucs for the tender. If he does get offer, Bucs have chance to match it. If they don't they get a 1st and a 3rd.
Love your blogs Pat. If the Panthers do go for Tim Tebow (as much as I am against it, the signs seem to be pointing that way!), do you think the Panthers will trade back into the first round to get him? Or hope he falls to them in the second round of the draft?
No need to trade into first round to get him.
Lets say the Bucs land one of the top two DTs in the draft. Who starts next to him? Is Roy Miller the favorite?
I'd go with Miller. I'm not a big believer in Hovan or Sims.
Rank The Owners in the Nfc South & GMs
We'll save that for June or July on the blog.
As a Falcon Fan I'm loving the fact that the Panthers are putting their season into Matt Moore's hand. Seriously are they not going to go out and get a veteran QB? Not sure who they can get.
I still think they'll bring back Josh McCown.
Pat, Raheem Morris was at UF/The Swamp for Pro Day. He was looking at the defensive players, right?
Yep, Bucs won't be drafting Tebow. Raheem got his QB last year.
The mocks are predicting the bucs would take McCoy over Suh because he fits better in the # technique. No way this happens Suh is a monster in the middle. The Bucs have to take him, Thoughts?
I've seen some people say McCoy fits better than Suh. I'm not one of those guys that sits around and breaks down tape. But, from what I've seen of Suh, I'd take him, if I had the chance.
Thanks for the reply. One more for you before I get back to work here. I'm excited about the release of Charles Grant and that they have recognized him as an inconsistency who can be replaced. But my question is, who do the Saints plan on replacing him with? I haven't heard of any interest in the Defensive End position. Is there someone on the practice squad that could fill in? I'm sure they'll resign Hargove, but who would be his backup.
Bobby McCray and Jeff Charleston also are there. But I'm sure you'll see at least one more DE added through draft or FA.
With the Falcons addressing their need at cornerback by adding Dunta Robinson, what position do you see them targeting now with their first round pick this year?
DE or OLB.
Tebow to the Panthers? As a QB? Seriously?
My thoughts exactly. But the Panthers appear to be seriously checking him out.
DeAngelo Williams has been ridden pretty hard the last few years, do you think his production drops off this year opening the door for more of Jonathan Stewart?
Check out latest post on my blog -- it's about how DeAngelo thinks sharing carries with Stewart will prolong both of their careers.
Where dose South Florda's Jason Piere-Paul land?
Not saying this will happen. But, what if Bucs traded down a bit, added an extra pick or two and took Pierre-Paul? He could stay in Tampa and could fill a need. Again, not saying it will happen, but something to think about.
Pat, with the Saints opening the '10 season on Thursday Sept. 9th, in prime time, I think Atlanta should be the opponent, because I believe they will be very good this year. Most people say it should be against the Vikings? your opinion please.
Don't rule out the Falcons. Vikings make some sense, but who knows what's going to happen with Favre.
I noticed you said Bobby Hebert was your buddy. Could you tell him that I have forgiven him this year for leaving us for the Falcons? Any man willing to get into a dress and lead a parade of men in dresses has proven his loyalty and deserves forgiveness. Tell him that would you?
I will tell him when I see him at mini-camp. But you might beat me to it here. I know Bobby's a regular reader.
Let's be honest with ourselves, Pat. None of us know what type of player Tebow will be. He could be a boom or a bust, same as EVERY OTHER PLAYER IN THE DRAFT. No matter what the talking heads say about a prospect, there is never a sure thing.
DeAngelo Williams has only ran the ball 121, 144, 273, and 216 times over the past four seasons. He's had a moderate to light load which is the benefit of having two great backs.
Exactly -- that's what the column is about and exactly what DeAngelo is saying.
Pat, if Sharper were to sign elsewhere, do you think the Saints put Jenkings in his place, or would it be someone else?
I'd guess Jenkins. You want a first-round pick starting by his second year.
I know Tebow to the Panthers as a QB isnt that good of an idea, but what about Tebow to the Panthers as a TE?
I'd vote for that one. But Tebow seems intent on trying it as a QB and I think he'll get that chance somewhere.
Hey Pat. Big fan of the chats, never gotten a question answered. Anyways, If someone signs Richard Marshall for his tender would the Panthers A) Let him go? B) If he goes, would Captain Munnerlyn get the starting job
Think Captain would at least ben an option.
What do you think about an OT at number 3 or a WR. If you havent noticed I am on the hot seat and if my Q B who I went out on a limb to get doesn't show much improvement my scrapbook in Tampa will be a short one
Shouldn't you be out scouting WRs, instead of sitting around the office chatting with us???
Any word on if the Bucs are looking at T.O.? He seemed to be a team player last year with the Bills.
T.O. a team player? First time I've heard that. You really want to put him with Josh Freeman? Good way to ruin a young QB.
Can the Cats get back into the first round before the draft? Do they have any ammunition at all?
Don't think they want to get into first round. That would also cost them money and they aren't spending liberally this year.
Thanks man! Can you settle my argument? Which running game would you rather have, Jets or Panthers?
Panthers, but, hey, I'm an NFC South guy.
Your cohort Tim Graham canceled his chat today, most likely because he'd rather watch basketball. It's nice to see that you haven't taken that same slacker approach
Oh my man Graham! Probably a boxing match going on that he wants to watch!!! Actually, I think he might be in transit to Florida for the NFL meeting. I'll be hanging with him next week. Two-minute warning on this chat.
Hey Pat, Do you see the Falcons picking a center in this draft? I think this will be McClure last year.
Yes, but not saying it will happen in the first round.
Pat time is up.When you come to Charlotte again Dinner is on me.See you in here next week
Did the question of the 02 Bucs vs the 09 Saints end up flooding your mailbag?
Yeah, fair amount. I've got a couple months to think about it. But you gave me a good reason, which carries a lot of weight.
Any idea about who will be Carolina's starting TE next year? Seems to be King, but Barnidge and Rosario showed a lot of upside last year.
Does it really matter who starts there? They alternate all those guys.
Pat When I will see you in Charlotte again Dinner is on me at Ruth's Chris
You're getting the real Scott Fowler in trouble -- and debt -- here!!!
As always, great job Pat. To you and everyone else out there, have a great weekend.
Thank you, Bill. And thanks to all for stopping by. We'll do it again next week.
