Chat with Jesse Rogers

  (4:05 PM)

Jesse is running just a bit late, should be here any second, live from Anaheim.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:08 PM)

Hi all. Im set up across the street from the Honda center..outside at JT Schmidtts! Its like 90 degrees! Crawford starting tonight. Boyton in, no Johnsson. Hossa in. Niemi backing up. Huet sick. Fire away!

Fitz (My cube)

Jesse, let's get this out of the way....why is Crawford starting? I know Huet is sick but Neimi should be able to do back to back with no problem, right?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:10 PM)

Wish I had a good answer. Niemi better be able to handle a workload, he might have 2 months of it coming up. The official statement from Q was rewarding Crawford...maybe he wasnt to energize his team..some players kind of said that...i dont believe this is good for niemi's confidence. and thats not a cliche. i think its true

Jesse Rogers
  (4:11 PM)

should say, wants to energize his team.

John S (Chicago, Illinois)

Jesse, any indication on the d-pairings tonight? I would think: Keith-Seabrook; Hammer-Sopel; Hendry-Boynton.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:11 PM)

hammer-boyton, sopel-hendry...buff in emergency..huge spot for boyton to jump in

John S (Chicago, Illinois)

Jesse, I think Crawford is starting tonight so that Niemi will be fresh for the more difficult Kings tomorrow night. Agree?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:13 PM)

Maybe but c'mon, u think broduer needs to rest when there are several days before a game and then back to back in the same city? or any playoff goaltedner??

BJ (Chicago)

Jesse, what's your opinion on the Ovi suspension? Fair, too harsh or too lenient? Thanks.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:14 PM)

At best fair...at worst, too light. My opinion: history of reckless play comes back to haunt him. I dont care if it was "only" a nudge. It was late, in the guys back, in a vulnerable position, and you have to pay the price for the length of campbell's injury. burish said the exact same thing yesterday, for what its worth

Neil (Fresno, CA)

Is Q switching Brouwer and Sharp again for tonights game?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:15 PM)

Brouwer with kids...sharp with hossa, bolland...unless there is a last minute change

Reno Pieroni (Northbrook)

Do you see Crawford's start tonight as a one time event or a true option in the net for the rest of the season?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:17 PM)

Good question. If you believe in the saying, "if you thnk you have two goaltedners then you dont have one" then what does it mean when you have three? thats my answer

Fitz (my cube)

What happens if Crawford has a good game? Doesn't that make things worse?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:17 PM)

Conceivably...

BJ (Chicago)

Jesse, I'm confused as to why Crawford gets the start today. Is it a lack in confidence in Niemi or am i reading too much into it?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:18 PM)

I dont believe you are reading too much into it. There is more here than meets the eye for sure...just not sompletely 100 percent sure what it all means but the reasoning is not cut and dry..

Karim (Wilmette)

With their previous struggles in the second period now moving to the third period, what's up with the Hawks? How soon are they going to realize that they're not the Flames (blowing games they should finish up) but rather the currently second seeded Hawks? Is it post-Olympic lag perhaps?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:19 PM)

They know it and are addressing it. lets see if it translates to the ice.

Varun Kumar (Darien, Illinois)

I have the Blackhawks going 10-4 in their last 14 games, do you think this is possible or are they closer to going to 7-7. I think they have enought in the net but their defense will suffer without campbell what do you think.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:20 PM)

I would closer to 7-7 than 10-4...not saying they will limp in but i just want to see them in the final 2 weeks put it together...remember, its a very good thing they are getting out to leads..would be worse if they were trailing a lot....man, its hot here! my head needs some lotion

Dan (Itasca)

Please tell me Crawford isn't starting because he shutout Anaheim two years ago.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:21 PM)

A couple people at the morning practice mentioned that. I think its stupid as well. Luckily Q never said that

Mike (Hammond)

Someone has to have video of Burish and buff singing yesterday....

Jesse Rogers
  (4:22 PM)

No, darn it. I had my flip camera that I use to post videos on espn website but of course could not use during the actual show. I wondered afterward if i could have during commercial. It was funny...especially burish. he was good.

Amber (A)

Jesse, with the Hawks being compared to the Pens now who would you pink to win the Stanley Cup if they went head to head in the Finals?? (Be truthful)

Jesse Rogers
  (4:23 PM)

At the beginning of the year I picked the Pens to beat the hawks. i havent paid as much attention to the pens lately but i guess i'd stick with that if the hawks can get that far!

BJ (Chicago)

I'm not buying them resting Niemi. We just had two days off...

Jesse Rogers
  (4:24 PM)

Bingo

Ghost in the Machine (Parts Unknown)

Jesse- Is Byfuglien moving to D tonight? Would that make more sense than Boynton and just play one of the healthy scratches i.e. Fraser etc.?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:26 PM)

He's not starting there. I dont think its a good idea to put someone back there when he hasnt played there in 2 years compared to someone playing there all season--albeit in the minors, lately. No, this is right

Jake (Chicago)

How does the loss of Campbell affect our chances in the playoffs?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:27 PM)

Reduces the margin for error, more presure on other guys, does affect the puck moving ability of the defense though johnsson isnt bad at that..different ways but it can be overcome..just will take a little doing...

BJ (Chicago)

When can we expect to see Johnsson back in the line up? Gotta think he'll be skating with Hammer, no?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:28 PM)

Yes, Johnsson with hammer...Q said maybe in phoenix..i think he might have concussion type stuff but i could be wrong..

Steve (Chicago)

Do you think the Hawks would ever consider using Sharp at LW on the PP and Hossa at the point? Hossa has great puckhandling skills, a good slapshot, and Sharp would be more of a dual threat at LW compared to Hossa because he's a RH stick.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:29 PM)

I wouldnt put it out of the realm of possibility since they havent been able to settle on their point men all season..especially the forward back there...i kind of like the idea..but sharp is more of a one timer type of guy than hossa so maybe thats why...

Roy (Berwyn)

Jesse,It seems like Sopel has been extra slow and Hjalmarrson hasn't been his self the past couple of games. I know they block a lot of shots, are there some injuries we don't know about?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:30 PM)

No more than usual..sopel has been limping around for weeks, sometimes on crutches...hammer banged up but not SO bad...just that time of year for the most part

Steve (Chicago)

With Campbell out, Melrose suggested the Hawks using Keith and Seabrook more. To me it looks like both have suffered from all the minutes this year...Is relying on them even more a good idea? I don't think it is, at least for the remainer of regular season.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:31 PM)

For the reg season, i dont think relying on them more is a good thing.

Sean (Seattle,WA)

I think Q made the right choice putting Crawford in goal tonight. Niemi has been solid against LA and should play well tomorrow. Something must be up if he is not starting Niemi in back to back games, and even if Huet is healthy in Phoenix, Q might go back to Niemi against a playoff team like Phoenix (could reveal who Q is leaning towards in the playoffs). Thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:33 PM)

Niemi is 100 percent healthy, I know that. so lets start there. i just dont think they have the ultimate confidence in him yet. maybe they think they are protecting him cause if he doesnt play well in both games it could hurt...we are near the playoffs, he hasnt played THAT many games, let him play. that is my thought

Jake (Chicago)

Hi Jesse...lots of questions about Crawford today. I'm starting to question Coach Q's handling of his goalies. Isn't he messing with their already shaky confidence levels?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:35 PM)

I think Q is a good coach. On top of a lot of things. Got this team to play better D, etc. BUT heres my take: Huet hurt his own confidence and the team in him...i would say the team is hurting Niemis

Jay (Chicago)

Do people underestimate Campbells impact on this team and his abilities because of his contract? Meaning if he was making $3M/year, would people feel worse about him being out. People seem to think he isn't that good because he is so overpayed.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:37 PM)

I think its a loss, not sure of others...he a big part of puck posession game...sure there are otehr injuries that would be worse but his is one level below the elite guys..and not by much the way he was playing this year

Zo (South Side )

Do you see Crawford's start tonight as a way to gage what to do with Huet next year? Or is this an attempt to shop Crawford to the rest of the league?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:37 PM)

Not sure what it is but prob not either of those things...im doubting huet is the starter here next year no matter what

John S (Chicago, Illinois)

Who's playing tonight in the Burish, Kopecky, Fraser, Eager mix?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:39 PM)

Believe Fraser and kopecky are out...burish, buff, eager are in

Bryan (Canada)

Did you happen to catch Jay Leno last night? Your thoughts on the unbelievable acting of Toews and Kane, eh?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:41 PM)

I was there for the taping. They were decent. Burish and Buff singing during the commercial break was the highlight. The after the show. Pat foley sat in leno's chair...jay blunk and I were his guests on the couch! it was fun

C. (Chicago)

Do you think Bolland's truly 100% (or anywhere close to that)? He doesn't look like the Bolland of last year's playoffs.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:43 PM)

I have seen no signs of injury. he might be behind cause he didnt play all season but he looks ok...not great, not bad...

Stacy (Chicago)

Hi Jesse, There is a lot of focus on the Sharks and Hawks finishing 1-2 in the Conference and the Wings locking up the 8 seed. I think a lot of people are taking Phoenix for granted. With the way Phoenix and the Sharks have been playing lately, do you think it's possible for Phoenix to catch the Sharks for their Division taking into consideration both of their remaining schedules and games at hand? And should Phoenix and Detroit meet in the first round, who do you see advancing?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:44 PM)

I just dont see it happening..dave tippett can just have the coach of the year award now. sharks will hold off i believe..good question on det. and phoenix...hmm..det.

Varun Kumar (Darien, Illinois)

I think ovechkin should have been suspended for 5 or more games cause you could see by the angle of his hands coming down that it was done purposefully. What do u think?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:45 PM)

I like 5 games

Alec (Streetor)

Anyone can report stuff, but there is a bit of internet chatter that Huet basically lost it in the locker room after the game in Philly last Saturday and that there is now friction between him and his teammates and that Huet now has the Blue Flu. Could the Crawford move be more a prelude to Huet being sent down?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:47 PM)

Havent heard that. Seems like a major stretch. Huet is in town and though we know he was upset i cant see him having a lasting meltdown with his teamates...i think i would have heard....

JM (Naperville)

I thought I heard Kaner say that 48 people went to The Tonight Show. Just curious, does the team always travel with that size of a group? Oh and did anyone feel the earthquake? :)

Jesse Rogers
  (4:50 PM)

Not sure if it was 48. Included some traveling media and front office people..and the trainers, etc. so larger group than normal, im sure..i woke up at 4 am when the earthquake happened but did not feel it exactly...did not know why i woke up. went right back to bed

Alex (Wisconsin)

OK Jesse - is there any possibility there is something more seriously wrong with Huet - and Crawford may be up for the duration and they want to get him some time?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:51 PM)

Certainly is possible..but Q did go on record saying it was flu like thing so that kind of puts him in a corner if its not that

John (Elk Grove)

With Detroit's remaining schedule I can see them moving as high as the 6th seed. Do you see this as possible? I also can see the Hawks dropping to the 3rd seed.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:52 PM)

Yes, I see both possibly happening

Mike (Hammond)

Has Q put a leash on Burish?......Since his first shift back, he's been quiet. Burish said he wanted to jump the boards to get at Ovi, but Q would strangle him.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:53 PM)

No, i dont think so...if he jumps the boards, major penlaties and suspension...cant do that anymore

Zo (South Side )

What are your thoughts about breaking up Keith and Seabrook? I wouldn't mind seeing Keith with Hammer.

Jesse Rogers
  (4:54 PM)

Not sure now is the time to try it...keith and seabrook usually are better together..

Jay (Chicago)

What is the scouting report on Boynton? I know he's not Campbell but can he do the job?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:57 PM)

Yeah, not a puck mover type. Stay at home. WE'll see how he skates. tough to tell in practice. obviously hes a former first round pick that was in the minors so not lighting it up..will be interesting

Steve (Drums, PA)

Jesse, You say Huet is gone after this year. Who is taking him off our hands?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:58 PM)

either buy out, minors, or a trade--i couldnt tell u to who right now...nothing is for sure. just dont think he will be the man...

Eric (Chicago)

Jesse, love all the hockey talk and all...but who's you got in the Finals for college basketball and who you got winning it?

Jesse Rogers
  (4:59 PM)

seriously so into hawks, i could not tell you 5 teams in the tourney...having said that, syracuse!

Stacy (Chicago)

You mentioned earlier that the Hawks are aware and addressing their recent inability to play a full 60 minutes. I'm not asking for names, but has anyone stepped up in the locker room with a "passionate" plea to the team or is everyone all Kumbayah about weathering this storm together?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:00 PM)

I think toews has for the most part. i dont know if theyve had a team metting about it specifically...but toews has stepped up

BJ (Chicago)

Keith also wanted a piece of Ovi but the ref cut him off at the pass. Brouwer also whispered something sweet to him as he was moved from the box to the locker room. What ever happened to good old fashioned hockey justice? Any chance Brouwer filled you in on what he said to Ovi?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:00 PM)

No, didnt have a hcne to ask about that..they wanted justice, its why a few (burish) didnt want to see him kicked out..next time i guess

JM (Naperville)

What's the general mood of the team? Have you noticed any changes - on or off the ice?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:02 PM)

Not really..think they want to get to the playoffs...and im not saying that because they seem not to care but its just time...

Andy (Chicago)

Jesse, I stay away from goaltender questions in your chat because they always seem to dominate, but this is just getting ridiculous now. I have now lost all confidence in any goaltending we might have. Can you talk me down from the ledge?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:02 PM)

i wish i could. i use to be far from the ledge myself. im getting closer. hopefully, somebody gets on a run...its a hope

Charlene (Bolingbrook)

Why doesn't Q have Sharp playing with the kids? They had such great chemistry together.

Jesse Rogers
  (5:04 PM)

I think he likes sharp in either spot but brouwer seems to be better with the kids..maximize his options. i like it better this way

Bill (Chicago)

Who's more valuable to the Hawks in the playoffs...Hammer, Brouwer or Ladd?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:05 PM)

Hammer...thin on D..you need him big time

Jeff (work)

Jesse- seems to me its not just the goalies that are failing the hawks its the cute/cocky passes that are finding the opponents sticks. Is Q addressing this at practice at all?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:05 PM)

Yes...eaiser said than done once you get into a game but yes

Jay (Chicago)

What do you think we can expect from Crawford? I haven't really been keeping up with his numbers in Rockford?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:07 PM)

Hes been good. Hes always been a good prospect. I think it was a close call at the end of camp..some in organization like him better than niemi...big in net...might not be as quick as niemi..we'll see tonight

Matt (Tucson)

You say Huet won't be the guy next year...so who will be the guy?

Jesse Rogers
  (5:08 PM)

TBD..cant say for sure it will be niemi...might not be on the team right now.

Jesse Rogers
  (5:11 PM)
