How's is everyone on St. Patty's Day eve? What's on your mind?
Grade the Kyle-Rogers paring?
Too early to tell, but a win this week at the place where Kyle won twice last year would help.
so terry after a week off we are heading to the high concrete banks of bristol and with it being a great year so far what can we expect from this race and who is your top five and dark horse for the weekend thanks
Top 5 this week: Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Denny hamlin, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Darkhorse: Marcos Ambrose. The racing ain't what it used to be at Bristol, but it's still always fun to watch.
Now that Kurt Busch has tried his hand at drag racing, do you think we will see him do a little more of that on off weekends?
Not really. It's just a promotional thing.
How much impact is the new spoiler going to have on races?
Impossible to say, but I don't expect a huge difference in the quality of the racing, which has been pretty good this season. What it may do is stir things up on the totem pole among who's good and who isn't.
Terry, if JR runs the 7 car full time in Nationwide, is Mark Martin a candidate to fill the seat for a few races? He has said that he'd like to run Nationwide if he could get a sponsor. Was he talking only about the 5 car in Nationwide, or is the 7 car a possibility?
It might be a possibliity, especially since his Cup sponsor in GoDaddy.
Do you think with all the negativity publicity Brad has caused Penske Racing he can last at a clean cut, sponsor friendly team like Penske?
Yes I do. I think brad has talent and will win races. Kurt also is a brash guy, but he has calmed down some as he's gotten older. Brad's an aggressive young guy, which is what you need in a driver.
Do you think Bristol will be Kyle's breakout weekend where he gets the #18 back on the winning track?
It should be considering what he did there last year. If he doesn't run well, they have some big problems.
which would help jimmie j's resume seem more complete; a win at bristol or a win on a road course ? which do you think he will get first?
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him win at Bristol. He was third there one year ago and eighth in August.
Do you expect Denny or Joey or Juan Pablo to go after Btad now that Carl is on probation?
No. All these guys know the penalties will escalate if this stuff continues.
How much of a debacle was the IRL opener? After watching the F1 race seeing the dusty front stretch and the bumpiness of the track made the IRL look truly minor league by comparison.
I disagree. I thought the racing at Brazil was the best I've ever seen on a street course. Lots of passing up front. but that first turn situation was a mess. No way they could go into that narrow 90 degree turn two-wide at the start. The red flag was a bummer, but they can't control the weather.
So the next intentional spin will automatically warrant a more severe penalty no matter who does it...ala the COT penalties escalating when a car misses specs...?
That's been a NASCAR justice system forever.
do you really think the penalties would escalate? wouldn't that be the ultimate hypocrisy? a precedent has been set
NASCAR can't just let guys go after each other every week in premediated acts of aggression. They'll get away with it at Bristol and Martinsville, but not 1.5 mile ovals where the danger is enormous.
Do you think Schumacher is fooling himself thinking he can compete with Alonso, Hamilton, Rosberg, Button and Massa at his advanced age?
I don't think his age is the problem, but he's been out of it a long time. There's a lot of rust to knock. off. However, he wasn't too bad on Sunday.
One of the ESPN writers suggested during the Indycar race chat that Indy officials were looking into moving the Indy 500 to Memorial Day with hopes of attracting some of the NASCAR big guns with open wheel history to be able to more realistically do both the Coke 600 and the Indy 500. Is it just wishful thinking or is there real interest by NASCAR and Indycar?
IndyCar needs to do some thing to spice it up and get more attention back to the Indy 500. I think it's a good idea, but I'm not sure how many big-name guys would race in both events.
Terry, how goes it?Hope all is well...Any word on Dega? Drivers liking new spoiler or not?And any word on Nascar choosing what plate to run with?
NASCAR is looking at a bigger plate. We won't know a lot until the have a drafting practice later this afternoon. Jeff Gordon met with NASCAR officials after the morning session. He said he air is much more turbulent behind a car, but that's no surprise.
Terry,Do you expect to see any tire problems with the Hendrick teams this weekend?...i didnt get to see the race this weekend but i heard there was quite the debacle
No. Bristol is completely different than a high-speed oval like Atlanta that has a rough surface and wears out tires.
If someone crashes Danica, I bet they get kicked out of NASCAR!
Funny Hayden. But you do wonder what the penalty would have been if it was DP instead of BK.
do you think jr can get a top 5 this weekend
He can't, but I don't expect him too.
Even though Brad didn't get penalized isn't he on notice from Nascar that he has to start respecting the other drivers or else?
Not officially, no. And in my opinion,. Brad did nothing wrong on Sunday in the first incident with Carl.
If Sprint Cup equals NFL, do you consider Nationwide Cup equal to BSC College Football?
No because NFL players don't in BSC games.
How did Dale manage to take the pole at Atlanta and not lead 1 single lap in the race?
Got beat back to the line on Lap 1 and never got back to the front.
Also, will someone new be driveng the 77 next year?
Possibly. This is an important for Sam to show he can race competitively.
Terry,Will Penske win more races for Dodge this year it was great to see a Mopar in Victory Lane.
I think Kurt has a few more wins coming this season. Hiring Addington was a great decision for the No. 2 team.
TB, do you agree with what Robby G said? That if it had been someone other than CE the penalty would have been much different.
I think the bigger question is whether the penalty would have changed if someone else was on the receiving end.
after this week who might be outside the top 35? should brad k be worried?
Brad definitely should be concerned. Getting punted by Carl cost him over 100 points and he goes to Bristol only 19 points ahead of 36th. And it's very easy to get caught up in a wreck at Bristol and finish 40th.
Terry,Have there been any Kahne rumors lately ?
No, and if RPM continues to run the way it did at Atlanta, the team might have a sot at keeping him.
Do the sponsors pick who drives the cars or is an owners decision?
It's both. Sponsors are spending millions of dollars, so they want to have someone representing them they feel comfortable about.
I have tickets to the Talladega race in April. Will the cars have spoilers or wings?
Spoilers. No more wings after this weekend.
but crashes are good for ratings, why not let em rough each other up a bit? I know the whole death thing, but im sure the drivers wouldnt mind. Death is everyehere, id watch more
Wow. Sorry Hayden. I don't think anyone else is OK with people dying at races.
How come all the good Nascar drivers now are from Californa, Vegas, west coast, north and not the south anymore?
There arwe good drivers everywhere. Denny Hamlin is from the South. So is Jeff Burton. So is Brian Vickers.
i've long heard grumblings that "cousin carl" isnt the friendly face he likes to portray.. what are your thoughts about him other than he just races hard
I think Carl is a good guy who's been great for the sport. But I think he made a bad decision at Atlanta.
TB, I have always wondered, what do sponser spend on average per race for the upper tier drivers. I know its different but I was just looking for a ballpark estimate. Thanks
The high-end rate for primary sponsorship on a top team was around $15 million a season, but that number has gone down in these difficult economic times.
Will BK win a race this season for Penske and dodge?
I doubt it, but he is a very good restrictor plate racer. And he was headed for a top 5 at Atlanta before the wreck.
Terry, do you think Jeff Gordon will ever win another championship or has that ship probably sailed?
Jeff still is a very competitive racer, but I think his champioonship days may be behind him.
I know you are probably sick of Danica questions but I have to ask, Waltrip and Harvick both thought driving Nationwide would help her in her Indycar season but listening to everyone this past weekend from Indycar saying she would stuggle because she seems confused or disinterested. Where do you stand on her development and her standing in both Indycar and NASCAR?
The two disciplines are completely different. I don't think going back and forth helps her.
Prediction....Khane to Hedricks,Harvick to SHR and Jr to RcR....thus return of the #3
OK Jimbo. We'll hold you to it. But I won't hold my breath.
Terry, have you heard any feed back on spoiler from the teams, I havent seen anything about testing
Newt is there ad he'll post something later today after the drafting practice session.
when are they gonna get rid of one of the california races? their attendance struggles at best, and its painful to watch for 4 hours twice a year
First, they are shortening the Chase race in Cali to 400 miles, a great decision. Second, one ISC track is going to lose a date to Kansas next year. There's a ton of debate of which track it will be, but most fans are in favor of Fontana losing a race, not Martinsville..
Terry u r awesome I gotta go.Have a great day and hope to see ya on Nascar Now this afternoon.
Tanks Jimbo. I won't be on today because they are doing reports from Dega, but it should be a great show.
I've been to Kentucky Speedway for an Indy Race. And I hope to see the Bush Race this yr. When will Nascar award a cup race for Kentucky what are your thoughts?
Kentucky will have a Cup race next season if the lawsuit thing is over, which it appears it is. But Bruton Smith will have to move a race from one of his other tracks. Atlanta could lose a race.
hey terry do you think if austin dillion gets up to the cup and if he drives the 3 car will he gain a huge fan base
Anyone who drives the 3 would gain a huge fan base, but that is a long way from becoming a reality.
Terry, With all of the babies being already born and the ones still on the way, what in the heck is going on in the drivers motorhome lot these days? I feel like the 70's are back and free love reigns again. I think need to take my wife to more races!!!!!
Haha Dave. The baby craze is in for the Cup guy. It's just the right time for a lot of guys who've been married a few years now. By the way, Gordon said today his wife is having a boy in August. Rick Hendrick plans to sign Jeff Jr. to an exclusive contract immediately after the birth.
hey terry why no fine for edwards driving backwards down pit road
If they aren't going to fine him for intentionally wrecking someone, they'd look pretty silly to fine him for driving the wrong way on pit road.
Just curious why you didn't include Matt Kenseth in your top 5 this weekend?
You can't include everybody. No matter who I list, someone whould say, "What about this guy?"But I think Matt can run up front and I wrote a column today about how the Roush boys are back.
will denny win one of the next two races?
I definitely could see that happening, probably more at Martinsville than Bristol.
do you think jr will win a race this year
Yes I do. He better. The clock is ticking.
Do you think NASCAR is the top racing series now?
It's far and away the top series in the US, but F1 remains the most popular racing series worldwide.
I'm out folks. Really enjoyed it today. Be sure and watch NASCAR Now later to get the Dega spoiler news, along with reading Newt's stuff on what happenbed there today. Have a great week. Peace.
