Chat with Matt Mosley

matt (philly)

hey matt....even though the cowboys kicked our butts the last two games, i think the eagles are one decent FS away from beating the cowboys...what do you think? with healthy ol and stew back...i think we can win the east

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

Oh, and I didn't get the impression that the gap was that small. We'll see what Marlin Jackson brings to the table, but a more consistent pass-rush would also help. And let's not act like those CBs were playing well down the stretch.

nard dog (scranton, pa)

what are youre thoughts on kolb, i just dont see anything special in him, average back up at best. i dont get what all the fuss is. also, what do you think about cornell in tourney...

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

Nard: I don't know in the world anyone could make a definitive statement one way or the other on Kolb. He looked pretty solid in two starts last season. I think he's got a lot of potential -- and that's why the Eagles drafted him. But I haven't seen enough to judge whether or not he's "special."

TIM (Chester,PA)

Will the Eagles or Giants be players for restricted free agent lb Kirk Morrision his tender is only a 3rd round.

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

I think the Giants have more interest than the Eagles.

Larry (Charlotte,NC) [via mobile]

What r the chances the Cowboys trade Marcus Spears or any other player?

Mosley
  (12:07 PM)

Spears is a restricted free agent at a first-round tender. Now that doesn't mean the Cowboys wouldn't trade him for something less than that. But that's the tender situation, so to speak. I don't think they'll trade him at this point.

Mr NEEK (armpit of america - NJ)

Based on the free agent moves where how do you rank the BiznizzlEAST

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

I like the chance the Eagles took on Jackson. Relatively low risk and lots of upside potential. The Giants overpaid for a starting safety who hasn't been all that special. Redskins have exercised patience. And the Cowboys have done nothing, which is probably right. So I don't think there have been any disastrous decisions. But the Rolle thing is a little baffling.

mike (south jersey)

What do you think the Eagles will do at the QB situation...what do you think is the best option? love the articles!

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Thanks, Mike. I think there's a 70 percent chance that McNabb's the starter and Kolb's the backup. I still have a hard time believing Vick will be on that roster.

Steve (New York)

Any more moves for the Giants or will it be quiet until the draft?

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

I could see Jerry Reese doing something if the price is right. But no big surprises from here on out.

Mike (Ohio)

How do you feel about the comments by both Dick Vermiel "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job." and Herm Edwards "His back is against the wall, and for him, that's when he's at his best," about Larry Johnson? I don't mind the pickup, but I think if he's the same guy that got kicked out of KC, we'll have issues... you thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:11 PM)

Those are guys that coached him when he was still putting up numbers. He took an enormous pounding. He's nothing more than a complementary back who might rush for 600 yards.

Matt (VT)

Matt--Beast blog is awesome. Do you think the G-men make a move if Osi is a no-show for workouts? will Aaron Ross regain his starting spot back from Terell Thomas?

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Giants have to find a way to keep Terrell Thomas on the field even if it's the nickel. I think Osi Umenyiora will show up for the offseason. I think he's had some heart to hearts with Reese and Coughlin.

Andy (Denver)

Matt, it appears that Shanahan/Allen are approaching the uncapped season as a chance to get the skins healthy again with regard to the cap by jettisoning alot of dead money contracts and not commiting to a bunch of new ones. Not the typical Snyder way. How long do you think it lasts?

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

I think Shanny and Allen will be given a lot of latitude the first couple seasons. If they get results, then that will continue.

TP (New York)

Do you think the New York Football Giants will try and draft C.J. Spiller or do you think we will go after a LB since we are hurting as a team at that position

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

15 is too high to go after Spiller. Linebacker is much more likely. I think they like Aaron Ross' little buddy Earl Thomas at safety. You have to keep bolstering that secondary.

Alex (NYC) [via mobile]

What are the chances that the Jets swap Braylon Edwards for Brandon Marshall?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

That would be an awesome deal for the Jets. I don't think it will happen.

pABLO (Lynn, MA)

I believe with the return of stewart bradley the rest of the eagles defense will fall into place and will do much better than they did last year. Your thoughts.

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

You can't assume that. You better keep drafting and signing players on defense. So no, I don't think it will necessarily "fall into place." You better get another pass-rusher in the draft. Abiamiri and Co. just aren't cutting it.

Matt (Philly)

What's your current prediction for the East standings....

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

1. Cowboys2. Eagles3. Giants4. RedskinsIn my mind, none of the teams have changed dramatically from the end of the season.

Ant (Greensboro) [via mobile]

Which Cowboys' RB is getting the most carries next season?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

I still think Barber will be the heavy volume guy.

nyc (markland)

even with the signing of rolle, do you think the giants safety needs are still near the top of their list?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Yep, you can't stop with Rolle.

Sergio (Toronto)

I think the Skins now have a chance to trade down in the draft; Cleveland needs a QB of the future...what do you think?

Mosley
  (12:17 PM)

Just depends on what they're willing to give up. If the Redskins can get two high picks, then you have to think about it. But I wouldn't stray too far away from Okung and Bulaga.

Walter Jenkins (Toledo Ohio)

Also a Philly Fam I think that we can beat the cowboys if we get a decent pass and run balance because we can't keep passing the ball and letting the QB get hit we need a solid banging RB

Mosley
  (12:18 PM)

Well, you're looking at Mike Bell right now. But Andy Reid doesn't love running the ball. I think a "banging RB" is a strange thing to be coveting.

MiKe (Yonkers)

Matt I can't understand how both kiper and mcshay have mclain going to the giants at pick 15 and yet you keep saying he will be off the board by the giants pick. After free agent aquisitions by teams ahead of the giants in the draft do you still see mclain going in the top ten?

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

I just have so much respect for that player that I refuse to believe he'll be there at No. 15. But if he is, bully for the Giants. Or something that sounds less like a 1920s sportswriter.

Steveb (Dallas)

Who is this Nate Allen kid out of South Florida?? hes on alot of mock drafts going 27 for the cowboys...dont you think we need to solidify that O line with that pick...or even trade up to get a playmaker on D..I only see Flozell getting older, slower and more dirty..

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

I think (and the Cowboys think) that OL is a bigger concern at this point.

Bot (Philly, Pa)

If McNabb ends up playing a lame duck season, do you think there's a possibilty that an unhappy Kolb decides to NOT sign an extension, forcing the eagles to use a Franchise Tag on a quarterback with just a handful of starts?

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

That's certainly a possibility, Bot. I do know that Kolb's agent, Jeff Nalley, is highly respected by the organization, so we'll see if that helps anything.

Matt (DC)

Will the Giants move on Kareem McKenzie and/or Rich Seibert? They looked so old last season

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Sure, those things could happen.

Fred (Canada)

Any interest by the Cowboys in Maurkice Pouncey? Can he play G along with C in the pros?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

I don't think he'll last that long. Talented, talented blocker.

Josh (Dallas)

What are the odds that a team steals Miles Austin from the Cowboys, especially if the team had multiple draft picks already and wouldn't mind giving up the first and third to get an emerging star like Austin?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

Not gonna happen on Jerry's watch.

Mike D (Philly)

I know we just signed Marlin Jackson, but do you think the Eagles front office would've been interested in Deion Grant had he been released before the signing? Any chance they'll pursue Grant? Also, are there ANY CB's on the market?

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

Grant's a possibility. I've never been that big of a fan of his, though.

nigel (washington dc)

do you really think dez bryant will slip to the cowboys at 27? And if so do you think the cowboys should take him?

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

No and yes.

Dan (Tx)

Any word on Kenny Phillips, will be ready for OTAs? How is he progressing?

Mosley
  (12:23 PM)

They won't rush him, but I think he'll be ready to go for training camp for sure. He's doing some good things in his rehab, according to the folks I've been in contact with. Maybe I'll call him this afternoon and check in on things.

Mike D (Philly)

What do you see the Eagles doing at 24? Why is the draft such a problem for the Eagles? The last two years have been solid but we can never get the first round right. Just ask Winston Justice what he thinks of blocking Anthony Spencer twice a year. He can thank our front office for that one, we traded them that pick. What do you see the Birds doing with that 24th pick? CB hopefully?

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

I think CB is certainly a possibility. But I could also see them taking a pass-rushing DE if someone's there. But I wouldn't be shocked if they traded down.

Matt (Chestertown, MD)

I know there is a lot of hype going around now with the 'skins taking a QB at number 4. Do you think that is the case? I don't really think that Cambell has showed much as a starter, but that could be because of the OL. I def think they should go after a tackle at 4, what do you think?

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

I think Mike Shanahan will take Clausen if he's convinced he can be a franchise QB. If not, you go with Okung -- and sleep well at night.

marcus (beating a dead horse)

when mcnabb gets traded does reid breakdown and cry at the press conference?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

Reid will make Dick Vermeil look heartless if that news conference ever takes place. I'm talking full-on shoulder heaves with some audible snorting.

Billy (Bronx)

Will the Giants keep Manningham or try to move him-maybe just to move up some spots?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

keep him.

Dave Campo (Valley Ranc)

What are the chances of me having a new FS to coach up next year? Will Hamlin get cut? And will Jerry look to free agency (Atogwe, Grant) or promote from within (Mike Hamlin)?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

They really, really like Mike Hamlin out of Clemson. We'll see how he does this offseason. But that's the name you'll start hearing a lot about.

Tony D (Burbank, CA)

Could you ever see a team drafting or signing a basketball center (a 7+ footer with decent hands, like Hasheem Thabeet or Roy Hibbert, both struggling a bit in basketball) and using him exclusively as a red zone target? If teams like the Cowboys can reserve a spot for a kickoff specialist then you'd think someone would set aside a spot for a TD ace.

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

Jerry showing slight interest in Baylor's 6-10 Ekpe Udoh. Huge wing span, but he's used to swatting the ball instead of catching it.

Michael (Texas)

Do you see Martellus Bennett being a contributor to the Cowboys this season? Could this be a breakout season?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Believe when I see it. Not a very mature guy. Good Ustream producer, though.

Benjamin (Albany)

Forget his rehab, ask Kenny Phillips if he is regrowing any cartilage in his knee and if it still bone on bone, Did the surgery even work?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

I'm told the surgery went really well.

Jack (NY)

If the Cowboys draft a slot/return guy, what happens to Crayton?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

He'll still be in the mix. If the Cowboys draft a WR, it will be in the later rounds. Don't forget about Ogletree being in the mix. Crayton's still valuable player on this team.

AD (Canada)

Assuming that the Redskins grab Okung at #4, what do you think about them grabbing a FS like Nate Allen at #37 so Landry can move back to SS?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

Allen won't be there at No. 37.

chris (nYc)

MM, who do you think was affected MOST negatively by injuries in the nfc east last season?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

Giants, because we expected them to be really good. Skins had a lot of injuries, but I didn't expect much from them in the first place.

Mike D (Philly)

Who you got in the NCAA mens tourniment?? GO NOVA!!

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

Bring that weak East Coast stuff down to Houston for the Sweet 16. Scotie Reynolds, meet Ekpe Udoh.

mike (dc)

Did you see "Big Fan"? I thought it was pretty brilliant.

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Need to see that. I'll make that a priority. The guy was a Giants fan, right?

Jeremy (Roanoke, VA)

Should the skins part ways with either cooley or f.davis to sure up the o-line. or does Shanahan like having 2 pass catching tightends?

Mosley
  (12:34 PM)

J, they'll both be there, man. You guys finally have a good thing at a certain position -- and people want to work a trade? Makes no sense to me. Sean Ryan's a good egg as a blocking TE. Know the guy well.

Benjamin (Albany)

any offseason buzz on Clint Sintim? after a horrible rookie year Mario Manningham accumulated awesome offseason buzz and it translated, I'm hoping to hear the same news about Sintim

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

I don't think Sintim was "horrible" at all. We expect a little too much from some of these rookies. He'll be much better with a full offseason in the lifting program. And Fewell will be good for him, too.

Will (Tx)

Matt - big fan. Why are the Eagles and some fans so high on Kobb? They always complain about the same thing happening year after with McNabb. Haven't we potentially seen Kobb before ala AJ Feely?

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

Eagles have invested a second-round pick and LOTS of time in Kolb. You want to eventually see if all that pays off. And I don't understand the rush to judgment on Kolb. How would we know whether he's A.J. Feeley or a young Delhomme? We don't. So let's let this thing breathe.

Dmyth12 (PA)

The Baylor "Carebears" have no shot at Villanova "Wildcats"! Where do you think Baylor has the advantage?

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

Well let's see, Dmyth. We have the second-tallest team in the nation. We start a 7-footer at center and a 6-10 shot blocker (potential lottery pick) at power forward. The small forward's 6-10 and his backup is 6-10 and recently dunked on UT 11 times in one game. Throw in one of the best guard tandems in the country with Dunn and Carter. The advantage is that this team has more length than Nova. And if you try to pack it in, Dunn will make you pay with about 8 three-pointers. Just sayin...

Rolando McClain (Tuscaloosa)

Everyone says the Giants would be thrilled to draft but would I fit in their system? How would I be able to clear throught the trash that Terrence Cody is no longer clogging up for me?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

Perhaps the smartest player in the draft. You'll find a way, Rolando. Star in the league for years and years. One of the safest picks in the draft.

Jason (Nashville)

Hey Matt, any chance Ramses "The Pharaoh" Barden gets some burn in the redzone package this year? There was a ton of buzz lat pre-season and then I'm not sure he even saw the field. I know that small school to the pros transition is tough but K. Boss played as a rookie.

Mosley
  (12:41 PM)

He'll get some opportunities, Jason. He just wasn't consistent on special teams. That kept him off the field. But you have to get him out there at some point.

Will (TX)

Why aren't the Eagles being more aggressive in FA and RFA if this is McNabb's last go around? I personally think McNabb should stay he's proven....

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

Who do you want? Peppers is another Kearse in the making -- in my humble opinion. You took a good risk on Jackson. Mike Bell's stopping by the facility. Hank's back. What did you want them to do?

Mike (RI)

Matt - Any chance the Giants try to move Jacobs? Or at the very least shake up the running game after last season?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

More carries for Bradshaw this season, but Jacobs is staying right where he is.

jake (bachelor)

who would you trust more...J. Jones or Schneider?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

The guy with the most Super Bowls.

Kenny (Philly)

I give credit to the Cowboys for kicking our butts the last two games of the season, but I don't think "the gap" is as big as you claim it to be. The Eagles O-Line was hurt, as was our CBs, McNabb had two fo his worst games of his career, and we didn't run the ball and I looked it up and we were 11-2 when we ran the ball 20+ times the only two times were against the Super Bowl champs and the first game against the Cowboys which if it wasn't for a call or two the Eagles could of won that game.

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

If you think Andy Reid's going to wake up one day and start running the ball, you're dreaming. And if you're veteran quarterback's not showing up in big games at the end of the season, that's a bit of an issue, too. The gap still exists as far as I can tell.

mike (nc)

I think Cambell made the line look worse than it was, and i know it was bad.. I think a quarterback helps a line look alot better!!!

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

I think that's an absolute crock! Put Romo or McNabb behind Rinehart, Heyer, Montgomery, Williams and the other spares and see what happens.

Marc (Malden, MA)

What are you hearing about the Redskins looking to move Cooley?

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

not hearing that.

Eddie (NY)

How could you say the Giants are going to be in third place? They made a lot of changes and this is the team that sweep the Cowboys right?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

May need you to point out all the changes, sir.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

speaking of madness, when do you think Duke will choke? Loisville? USU?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

Look forward to seeing them in the Elite 8. They got fat off playing in a weak, weak ACC this season. Scheyer and Singler will get eaten up by teams with good 2-3 zones like Syracuse and a certain Waco-based squad.

Jason (Bmore)

You don't hear people shouting about the NFC East being the best division any longer. What division do you think is best in the NFL?

Mosley
  (12:50 PM)

Probably the AFC East.

TRISH WRIGHT (SYRACUSE)

What is happening with Brian Westbrook? Do you see him signing anywhere for this year or is his career done?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

He'll get a shot somewhere. Folks are waiting for the market to settle down first. You may see teams wait until after the draft.

Clay (Charlotte)

What do you think of Campbell, do you think he can be a servicable starter if there is some stability in the coaching staff? You have to respect how he's handled the miriad of trade/draft rumors.

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

Considering the circumstances last season, I thought he performed admirably. That was the worst O-line in the league by the end of the season. And Campbell still kept the Skins in a lot of games. Yes, the defense also played well, but Campbell gave the Skins chances to win games. He was really good in a 7-6 loss at Cowboys Stadium. Zorn or whoever was calling plays at the time went conservative for no good reason and lost that game.

Ken (DC)

What are the odds at this point that McNabb lands in Minnesota (and takes them to the Superbowl)?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

I don't think the Eagles are particularly interested in helping Brad Childress get to the Super Bowl.

Chris (Edinboro)

The Giants looked like a playoff off team before they were ravaged by injuries...we did sweep the cowboys...so as Eddie asked how to predict us 3rd when we made 1 decent move that does improve our safties?

Mosley
  (12:55 PM)

Hey, the Eagles had a bunch of injuries, too. Let's not act like the Giants were the only team affected by that. Eagles' DC dies, they lose Bradley for the season soon thereafter and they never find a true starting safety to go with Quintin Mikell. Then Hanson gets suspended. Oh yeah, and Hobbs goes out for the season. Starting center gets injured down the stretch. At least they made the playoffs. Why would I move the Giants ahead of the Eagles? Because they signed Antrel Rolle? No thanks.

BillyBob (AZ)

How much more roster work does Washington need to do to make the 3-4 D effective?

Mosley
  (12:56 PM)

You'll see it in every draft pick they make. Their LBs will start taking on a different look. And this will likely be the end of the road for London Fletcher after this season. The man wasn't made to play in a 3-4. Ask Dex Coakley and Dat Nguyen about that.

Chris (Holmdel, NJ)

Matt, while Terrance Newman didn't have a bad season, he was far from a shutdown corner last year. Do you think Scandrick could make a run at his starting job and if so do you think Newman could slide over to free safety?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

It's not going to happen at this point. Scandrick will continue his role as a nickel corner. Thanks for being one of the first people in line today.

shanard (slc,ut)

matt, i believe dallas will draft pouncey or morgan burnett he put up some impressive numbers at his pro day i don't think he is around in the 2nd rd we we pick again do u.

Mosley
  (12:58 PM)

Neither one of those guys will be there at No. 27

Don (Huntington WV)

Are the Redskins done with rb's in free agency? They cut four rb's and have only signed one in Larry Johnson if I am not mistaken. If they are not finished signing a rb in the free agency, are there any rumors as to who they will sign? If Claussen is not there at #4, do they drafy spiller? Great job on the blog sir! You keep the offseason bearable!

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

That's way too high for Spiller. You better grab a LT if you're not going with Clausen. Don't start reaching. It will get you in trouble.

Chris (Staten Island, NY)

Matt, do you think the Rams will match any offer for Otogwe? He would appear to be a nice upgrade at FS over Ken Hamlin for the Cowboys.

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

I think the Cowboys are interested in Atogwe -- at the right price. No rush on signing him.

Kellz (Queens, NY)

great blog Matt, keep it up........i doubt the Giants staying at 15 and getting their dream pick, who is McClain. But i doubt they will move up to snag him. So who should they take after McClain at the Mike position, which i think is their biggest need heading into the draft?

Mosley
  (1:00 PM)

If Spikes is there, you have to at least think about him. Kellz, thanks for asking the first question today.

MJ (Boston)

I ranked all the starting corners in the NFC East....and the Redskins had the 7th and 8th best, out of 8. Agree?

Mosley
  (1:03 PM)

I'd probably have Hall a little higher than that.1. Mike Jenkins2. Asante Samuel3. DeAngelo Hall4. Terence Newman5. Aaron Ross6. Sheldon Brown7. Terrell Thomas8. Corey Webster

Brendan (Houston, tx)

Just wanted to say that the comment about Andy Reid hunching and snorting was hilarious

Mosley
  (1:04 PM)

Brendan, thanks for stopping by.

BillyBob (AZ)

Will Marlin Jackson be an effective S or will he be more of a nickle back?

Mosley
  (1:05 PM)

If he's healthy, he starts at FS.

Jeff Jaegel (Flemington, NJ)

Spags may not have died but obviously he left the Giants and was replaced by a guy with no experience. If all of our injured players come back, the Giants will be right there in the discussion for first.

Mosley
  (1:06 PM)

I've learned my lesson on basing prediction on offseason moves. Until proven otherwise, I'll have the NFC East teams in the exact positions they finished.

Dave (IL)

Bulaga or Okung? I know that Okung is more of a physical specimen, but Bulaga seems to have better technique.

Mosley
  (1:07 PM)

Go with Okung. I think he has the potential to be an absolute star. Bulaga's a solid, solid player. But give me a guy who can be an All-Pro for eight or nine seasons. I think Okung has a better shot of being that guy. And I'm biased because I saw him play a LOT more than Bulaga. Ferentz puts a ton of guys in the pros.

MJ (Boston)

Did you really put Hall ahead of Newman, no offense i love ya Matt...but thats mind blowing, and insane

Mosley
  (1:09 PM)

You guys asked for a list. I didn't get to ponder for very long. Perhaps I'll give it some thought and come back with a different list next week. You guys have been great as always today. I'm witnessing a very odd altercation in a Dallas Starbucks. It's time for me to leave. Talk soon.

BillyBob (AZ)

Can Haynesworth do enough as a 3-4 DE to justify his contract?I'm sure he will be good but a 3-4 DE is usually not a guy you pay a gazillion dollars.

Mosley
  (1:09 PM)

Haynesworth will be all over that line. Don't typecast him just as a DE.

Tyler (757)

shut me out again, not my lucky day

Mosley
  (1:10 PM)

Tyler, hang in there pal. I'll be back next week.

William (Fort Worth)

Any new info on the Cowboys acquiring (or attempting to) Oshiomogho Atogwe from the Rams?

Mosley
  (1:10 PM)

I'll bring it to you the moment it happens -- if it happens.
