Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Welcome to the wonderful world of spoiler testing. Just had chicken for lunch. No wings. Now fire away with those questions.

Art McMillan (Arizona)

Kevin Harvick is a JERK.....

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

So what's the question? Or the point?

Buster (31830)

who won nascar race today at bristol.

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Are you caught in a time warp? Jimmie Johnson won on Sunday. Jimmie wins every Sunday according to some.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

With Scott Wimmer Finishing in the top 10 at Bristol in the #7 Chevrolet, Do you think that JR Motorsports will let Danica Patrick part ways?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

How many t-shirts has Scott Wimmer sold? Next question.

Kevin (Va Beach)

With the new cars and the HANS and the wing/spoiler, drivers rely on their spotters more than ever. Do you think that a driver should be black flagged for losing radio communication with their spotter? Seems like a safety issue to me. What if Biffle had a similar incident at a bigger track?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Black flag would be rather harsh. You might have other teams jamming Jimmie Johnson's frequency to get him off the track.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Which driver will be the first to part ways from their current teams in the Sprint Cup Series?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Do you mean fired or leaving for another team. If you mean fired, if David Ragan doesn't get his acdt together his job could be on the line. If you mean leaving for another team I'd say Kasey Kahne or Kevin Harvick.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I know that is way too early but when will we see Danica Patrick race in her very first Sprint Cup Series race?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

I'm betting either late this season or sometime next year. If they plan to put her in a fulltime Cup ride in 2012 she has to start gaining experience.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, I know that last year there were rumors about the Bass Pro sponsorship leaving EGR, but with their contract up after this year have you heard anything about what their plans are? Or is it to early?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

They seem happy with Jamie McMurray now, but if given the opportunity to go with an upper echelon driver at, say, Stewart Haas Racing, my bet is they'll go elsewhere.

Brian (Washington D.C.)

Do you think this could be the week that Dale Jr wins in martinsville, he has some great runs there in the past, and what are you predictions for the top 5

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I like Jimmie, Jimmie, Jimmie, Jimmie and one vote for Denny Hamlin. Anybody else and I'd be shocked.

carl raleigh nc [via mobile]

Does bobby labonte have enough sponsorship for the season and will switching back to the spoiler help him

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

They do plan to run the full season, although I'm not 100 percent sure sponsorship is sold for every race. As for the spoiler, it won't make much difference in performance. The top teams will still dominate.

Jason (Raleigh, NC)

Hey Mr. Newton! Do you feel like Marcus Ambrose can finish in the top 20 in points this season? Thanks, keep up the good work!

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

He's off to a rough start, but he has enough races to work his way back there. Many picked him to be a contender for a Chase spot this season. I had him just outside the top 12. So yes, I do believe he can rally.

Todd (Ga)

What are your thought on dale jr running a truck race? Is it something we will ever see?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

He told me he has no plans to do it now, but he'd like to do it before his career ends. Says Kevin Harvick has an open door for him to drive a KHI truck. Read my blog on DW on ESPN.com and you'll see exactly what Junior said.

Tracy (CT)

Should I go to the Allstar race or the 600??? Which one has the activities?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

The All-Star race is one of my favorites. No pressure. Just guys racing for a million dollars. Plus they usually have great entertainment.

becka (virginia)

where do the hats go after the hat dance

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

To hat heaven.

RAYGORDONREID ( MECHANICSVILE VA23111)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2. 25 PM HI DAVID WHO YOU HAVE FOR MARTINVILLE SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Jimmie Johnson. He owns the track.

dan (texas)

david i think paul menard is for real this year. i think he can make the chase. slugger labbe has made paul show he can drive a race car. go 98.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Really? Seriously? Are you two related?

JAMMER (UTAH)

Great Article Newt!!! Just wanted to get your though on something. Jimmie is most doubtfully one of the greatest drivers of all time. with his 4 championships and how he earned them, (2006- old car, 2007- old car with cot, 2008-2009- cot) if he earns his 5th straight with the change to the spoiler, could he contend to be the greatest of all time, with respect to richard petty & dale sr?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

If he wins five in a row I'll proclaim him the greats of all time on the spot. And by the way, with respect to Richard Petty and Dale Sr., David Pearson is the greatest of all time. Look at his winning percentages and times he won the title when actually running a full season. 3-for-3.

Tim (AZ)

David, what was up with the 17 on restarts? Was he down a gear, or just a bad day? Every restart I saw, he struggled to get the car going. Thanks

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

He just spun his tires. Cost Kurt Busch the win. Kurt had the fastest car all day.

Keith (Flagstaff)

His Kurt Busch taken on a new leadership role at Penske sort of like how Burton did at Childress to raise the performance of the entire team?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

I'd say Steve Addington has become the real calming force over there, but Kurt has matured a great deal and definitely is a leader there.

Brian (Woodbridge, VA)

How?s it going David? Do you think this could be they race that Dale Jr. finally wins at Martinsville? He has run well there in the past, also who are your favorites for the top 5 this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Don't think he'll win, but his confidence level is up so barring a mechanical failure I expect a solid top 10 to 15 run.

Rick (Philly)

David - I am a paranoid 48 fan. I could care whether someone says JJ is the best driver or Knaus is the best crew chief (I happen to believe both are true) all I know is that the 48 team is the best team. We are almost into April and still have heard nothing about Knaus resigning. Are you hearing anything?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Interesting you noticed that. I remember when Ray Evernham left Hendrick for Dodge. More money and power talked in that case.

caster and camber (bahama)

so the biff said his radio was to blame for the wreck he caused. was anyone with nascar, or fans, etc... listening to his scanner and could confirm this? i know that the radios do malfunction every blue moon but, this seems a little fishy to me. what do you think?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Doesn't sound fishy to me. If he didn't know he had a car above or below him then you can better understand why he got into it.

Marion (SC)

David,Anything new on Kahne and Harvicks free agency

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Not a word. That won't heat up for another month or so.

Chuck (DC)

Since every driver said there is no difference in the handling with wing vs. spoiler was the change just cosmetic?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Much of the reasoning for the change was cosmetic, but NASCAR also believes the car will create more side-by-side racing and passing for the lead. Stay tuned.

Chuck (DC)

What are you hearing about Nascar testing fuel injection and how soon will that happen?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

They are doing all the legwork and plan to move in that direction by 2011 if there are no complications.

Billy (Reno)

Odds Allgaier gets the 77 ride? If not this season then next?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

50-50. He also could be prepping for a fourth team at Penske.

Rick (Philly)

Did the drivers race in packs today and if so how did they handle?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Not a lot, and very small ones at that. Mostly teams. They are working on setups and packs would create a different animal.

Trent (Conn.)

Harvick posted pic of his wife driving what looks to be a Lexus SUV. Don't team deals with manufacturers require them to drive the same cars on the road?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

The manufacturers provide them with cars, but that doesn't mean they don't own other brands, particularly if they don't compete with what's on the track.

Josiah (Ohio)

In regards to the spoiler, I haven't been this excited about NASCAR in a long time. I read your DW blog, is it just me or does it sound like he's a backseat driver when it comes to current drivers? A.k.a. suggesting Jr. drives in the truck series.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

DW always has spoken his mind. That's what makes him who he is. As for the spoiler, if that gets you excited about the sport then NASCAR has accomplished its goal.

Butch (MS)

The attendance at BMS has been estimated at 100,000 at a track that has sold out 160,000. Last time BMS was not a sell out was 1982, we have had several recessions since that time but it has continued to sell out. Has NASCAR lost a major portion of the fan base? Thanks.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

First, I believe it was closer to 130,000, which is a pretty good crowd. The weather was miserable as well, so that played a factor. But I believe the biggest factor at Bristol is they lost the beating and banging when the track was resurfaced. Fans came to see tempers flare, not side by side racing.

John (Illinois)

How come we never get to chat with the female EPSN reporters? Bring on Jamie Little!!!

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

We'd love to have Jamie on. I'll pass that on to the bosses.

Jason (Cohasset,MN)

I know this question is a little old but what was your reaction to Cousin Carls 3 race probation?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Slap on the wrist. I agreed with many drivers that something a bit more harsh was deserved.

Johnny (Alabama)

I heard that after having Brad Keselowski race him hard for a position, Jimmie Johnson said over his radio, "He'll never learn." So I guess Keselowski is just supposed to pull over and let Johnson pass him now because Johnson is a "veteran"? Its called racing for a reason, Jimmie...

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

JJ did say that. It seems when a driver is picked on for something that everybody joins in. I don't blame BK for racing Johnson hard at that moment. He's getting paid to race just like everybody else.

Billy (Reno)

No a question more so an observation but um all drivers complain when they get busted for speeding. Juan had a fit at Indy last year and everyone said he was jsut showing emotion. Jr does it and he is the worst person on earth.....

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

It's no different than when one of us gets caught speeding on the interstate. We're more mad at ourselves than anything but we want to take it out on everybody else.

Jessie (Ca)

With #48 winning 3 out of the first 5 has Nascar confiscated any of those cars for teardowns?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

They tear down the winning car every week. Nothing's been found and I don't expect it to be. That team is just better than the rest.

Derek (Florida)

What is up with Hamlin this year? Is it bad luck or are there some issues with his team that are not being seen by the public.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

More bad luck than anything. He's had cars capable of winning, but a blown tire here or engine problem there has cost him. Such things usually even out.

Paul_MenardFans (TwitterWorld)

Hey Newt! As you can probably tell, I'm pretty pumped about Menards 2010 season...what are your thoughts on it?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Glad to know Menard has a fan base. His position in points is pretty shocking.

Spence (Atlanta)

I just read your article about Jr. on the radio last weekend. You said it was Jr.'s first time in the top-12 in 48 races. What about after Daytona?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Top 12 in points. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Johnny (Alabama)

I saw where Montoya was using the wing yesterday at the Charlotte test... why was he doing that?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

They were just looking for a baseline for comparison. Nothing more.

John (Illinois)

I hope that tracks like Chicago learn a lesson from the empty seats at Bristol. There is absolutely no reason to force fans to buy tickets for multiple races, when they can't even sell out the main event. I want to go to the Nationwide race at Chicago... no can do. Fans must buy season tickets or nothing. The decline in popularity of NASCAR will eventually be a good thing for fans.

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

I've discussed it with track promoters before and they all seem to have what they believe are good arguments, but I am totally with you on this one.

Sonia (Titusville)

Since Nascar and every fan is sick of #48 winning can't the other 42 drivers race #48 really agressive, even wrecking him out without fear of Nascar penalities?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Well there's a theory. Pretty sure they race him hard already. Wrecking JJ on purpose might be considered extreme.

William (Miami)

Since Nascar said the drivers can "go at it" why doesn't Kurt payback Johnson for wrecking him out 2 times last year at Infineon and Chicago?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Maybe he's waiting for Infineon and Chicago for retribution. I don't know. They seemed to have settled those incidences at the time. Had BK and CE sat down and talked a few times after previous incidents Atlanta may never have happened.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Hey David, Does NASCAR plan to look at replacing the splitter????? It seems to be causing lots of tire issues with side by side racing.

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Not sure about totally replacing, but the front end is next on the to-do list.

Frank (Kingston, Pa)

David - Your article about the 48 team only depresses me even more. My only hope is that Knaus does not resign. If he does not come back to Hendrick what other team wins the lottery?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Seriously, I don't believe Knaus is going anywhere. And if he is, I haven't heard a word about where.

Bill (ct)

Did Paul Menards dad have his son replaced with a robot or something?!?!? All kidding aside, can Paul keep it up this year?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Funny. I could be wrong, but I just don't see him sustaining this consistency for 36 races. Or even 26 to get into the Chase. Nothing personal. Just the way I see it.

Joe (Byron, MI)

Do you think Martinsville will be where Denny, Kurt or even Gordon put down there foot on #48 and say enough is enough and wreck him out if that's what it takes?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I'd go with Gordon or Denny. Kurt hates the place and just hopes to survive. But do I think it'll happen. Probably not. Look at JJ's track record there. A bad day is a top 5.

lynn (flordia)

I think that becka means does do they throw the hats away or does the winner get them

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

I've never thought about it to be honest. Many of them go to corporate sponsors that are at the track. Maybe they toss them to fans. Wish I had a better answer.

Jason (Minnesota)

Do you think Carl Edwards is gonna win a race this year in the sprint cup and end his streak

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

I do. Just don't know which one. Maybe Texas.

Dave (Rapid City, SD)

Why do race teams change their paint schemes so often?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

The samne reason football teams mix up jersey and pant combinations. New paint schemes mean new merchandise which means fans have to have the lastest. They also change because sponsors are different week to week more now than in a long time.

caster and camber (bahama)

so i went and voted today for the all star race. i voted for the hometown hero here in bahama, nc, scott riggs. in retrospect i kinda feel like it was a waste of a vote. what do you think, a waste? who might you vote for?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Scott's a nice guy, but it probably was a waste. I don't get a vote so I won't say. I know Martin Truex Jr. is campaigning for votes.

Jamerson (Georgia)

I have a degree in Computer Engineering. Do people in my profession usually get jobs with race teams? How should I approach getting a job in racing... just send my resume to race teams?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

You'll see more people with computers in the garage at today's spoiler test than drivers, crew chiefs or crew men. I'd contact the NASCAR Institute in Mooresville.

Heather (TX)

Why does Gibbs have to hold back Kyle from running too many truck and Nationwide races but Dale has an open offer to race trucks and he doesn't want to?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Same reason some people like vegetables and others like myself don't care for them. To each his own. Kyle loves being in a car 24-7. Earnhardt has more demands away from the track because of his popularity and chooses not to.

Dee (Las Vegas)

I know it has been said that SHR may go to three cars next year. Are there any other organizations that are looking at expanding for next year? JGR? Penske? If so, who would be the favorites for those new rides?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

You've mentioned all the key characters. Kahne and Harvick are the top free agents, and while I think Harvick will go to SHR if he chooses to leave or not form his own team, I'm up in the air on Kahne.

ron (salisbury, md.)

In the past Nascar let different makes of cars make adjustments for the next race due to their (whining) perceived disadvantage in the last race. With the COT that is gone. I believe this has alllowed the best teams to win more often. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

The best teams always have won the most races. The COT has leveled the playing field more than anything, but the teams with the best engineers, drivers and crew chiefs still dominate.

John (Illinois)

Does Kurt Busch have personal animosity towards Jimmie Johnson? He sounded like one of the fans after the race, when he complained that he'd rather be beat by ANYONE BUT THE 48.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Did you not hear what Rick Hendrick said after the race. He said Kurt has praised the 48 team more than any driver and he planned to call Kurt tell him what a great race he ran at Bristol.

James (VA)

Doesn't Waltrip say Dale should race trucks just to boost ticket sales and tv ratings?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

No, it was all for performance.

William (Indy)

What's the deal with Michael Waltrip starting and parking at Bristol? Is that his plan from now on or what?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Hey, he's doing what he had to do to get money for that team so it can run more. I don't fault these teams for that.

Jason (Minnesota)

who do u thin if jimmie johnson and dale sr had a one on one race who would u pick to win

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Depends on the track and whether excessive bumping were allowed. Honestly, as good as Earnhardt was I can't say he was any better than Johnson.

Aj (Indy )

Just my opinion, but I think people are tired of watching Chad Knaus win every race...er...I mean Jimmie. If this continues and Jimmie is leading the race and someone other than Mark Martin or Jeff Gordon is close enough behind him, they are going to dump him for the win....if people can't beat Chad the clean way, maybe they can knock Jimmie hard enough to dislodge that horseshoe he has stuck up his...........

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

That definitely would be "have at it boys."

Jamerson (Georgia)

Alot of people said that this was a make or break year for Sam Hornish... and its not looking good so far. Even Keselowski, with his limited Cup experience, is outperforming Sam. Do you think we will see Allgaier in the #77 car next year?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

He's had good runs but horrible luck. Let's not push the panic cutton just yet.

MotorMatt (Connecticut)

Does Joey Logano have any mentors in the garage that help him adjust to deal with issues like him getting dumped by Kevin Harvick?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

I'm sure he talks to Mark Martin a lot. Hey guys, just realized the time. Have to go collect some film for NASCAR Now show tonight. Be sure to tune in. And thanks for the questions today. If you have more feel free to ask on Twitter at @newtonespn
