Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hi everyone. Thanks for waiting from yesterday until today. Hope we can get to lots of questions. I'll do my best. Feel free to chime in about our latest rookie report, and let me apologize in advance about not getting to my Facebook questions this week. I'll do better."He just wandered out on the floor!!".

jeff (newport beach , ca)

Dave- plain and simple, will the purple and gold repeat? and beside kobe and pau, who will have to be crucial?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Plain and simple, who knows? Will it rain tomorrow? How about 3 months from now?

Bo (OK)

I contend that lebron james is the greatest athlete in the history of the human-kind. Any rebuttal?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

You mean besides Bo? Prime Time was pretty fabulous too. Wilbur Marshall was incredibly fast and strong, and loved to knock guys out too.

Pete (Denver)

What do you think about guys like Chris Sheridan who has such a NY bias in their reporting regarding the Summer of 2010 Free Agency? It seems to me that some of these NY media guys are delusional and at the same time arrogant.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I've never noticed any bias, but I guess it's possible that he has some. But I'll say this about Chris-it's not possible that he's arrogant. That guy has never failed to volunteer to help me any chance he got, including my first visit to MSG, when he gave up his front row media chair for me without being asked to.

Pete (Denver)

Is Durant the most natural looking scorer/offensive player in the league? I used to think Melo was, but Durant seems effortless on the offensive end of the floor.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Can we call it a tie?

JOhn (Santa Barbara)

In case folk missed it - the jrue holiday led sixers beat the 'red hot' brandon jennings led bucks - in milwaukee - minus two key players - last night...Holiday was a STEAL

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

You have to wonder if the Knicks and Raps are not kicking themselves. Both liked Jrue a lot. He's going to be a starter for a dozen+ years.

Jake (Chicago)

Wilbur Marshall should never have left Chicago...anyway, speaking of Chicago, any chance Derrick Rose can lure LBJ or Wade?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Highly, highly doubtful.

ryan (pa)

Isn't it clear that as Tyreke has been steady since day one he has not vastly improved his game whereas Step Curry has improved unbelievably and looks like a future franchise player. Should we reward consistent and superb play of Evans or the maturation of a budding star by the Bay.

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Both are desired. Evans should not apologize for having a better start than Curry.

Jason (Redondo Beach)

As a Laker fan, I applaud you for not trying to force Kobe into your rookie pairings article today; even though you probably knew the fanatics would call for your head. We Laker fans love us some Kobe! That being said, do you ever use him as an example? If so, for what (positive or negative)?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I think I have used him in previous reports like this. He's a fantastic example of competing and working every day on his game.

Mike (San Francisco)

Hey Coach. When writing your 'whom to study' article for the Rookie Watch, do you make an effort to choose mentors that your readers aren't expecting (Blair/Dirk, for instance), or is it so simple as highlighting an area upon which to improve for the rookies, then matching up with a veteran who does that well?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I'm not nearly smart enough to think about what might be surprising (though my editors are). I'm trying to be authentic, as if they were my students and I had to help them in this way.

Chris (Cali)

Better athlete Young Shaq or D Howard?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Wow. Very tough call. I'd lean Shaq, but I could be wrong.

Brad (Chicago)

This past draft has been pretty full of decent to good point guards....any update on how Nick Calathes is doing overseas?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He's not playing much on that great team over there, but I heard he's getting much better overall. My guess is we'll see him after one more season in the NBA.

Pierre (Sacramento)

I think Tryke took your "Building a house one brick at a time" the wrong way.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He's not alone.

Greg (SoPo, Maine)

Oh what a difference a week can make. Celts are back!

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

It's a long season. That's why it's impossible to make predictions that have meaning.

Mary (Decatur, GA)

David, my husband just saw you on First Take. He said no man should look like you, have that much hair, and know basketball the way you do. What do you think about that?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I think I'm happy that guys the van Gundy's are on TV a lot as coaches/media people.

Charlie (ATX)

Will someone tell Rick Carlisle that Rodrigue Beaubois brings so much more to the floor than JJ Barea?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Not so much more as so much different.

Chaz (North Carolina)

Do you ever pay attention to websites like nbadraft.net or draftexpress? What's their reputation in the scouting community?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

There is no website on earth like Draft Express. We cover the draft incredibly well, and no one is plugged in like Chad. No one is close, actually. But d-express has great data and they think draft all the time. J Givony is the best and a close friend. All the other sites are weak.

Matt (Indy)

Brandon Rush has been more consistent lately. What do you project his future to ultimately be?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Defensive specialist who makes three's. Which is a nice combination.

Tony (Washington)

Where do you see Ricky Rubio being next year? Is it possible he comes over seas? Could you tell us a little about his performance this year and how you would evaluate it?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I think he waits another year. And I think he's special, like really special. He'll score a lot more here than he does there-it's a different game over there. But his team will throw down more lob dunks than any other team, and stiffs will get easy buckets too. Spencer Hawes would be much better next to a guy like that.

Dave (Toronto)

Had the Knicks landed Stephen Curry, would it have increased the team's likelihood of landing LeBron?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

No.

Marc (Calgary)

Is there a worse defensive big man in the NBA than Andrea Bargnani? How good would the Raptors be with your boy Joakim Noah instead?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Wow.

Rob (Philly)

Who do you think is the best player who could play with LeBron if you had to pick from the entire NBA player pool?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

That's easy;1.Superman2. CP3

Matt (Fort Collins)

Wow...I read your report. Did you get in trouble for breaking the only-compare-white-guys-to-white-guys rule?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

It's just a guideline, not a rule. :)Ball see's no color, right?

josh (sioux falls, sd )

i went to a lot of NBDL games and watched reggie williams play for the skyforce and couldnt figure out why he wasnt called up sooner. he is killing for the warriors. he should get rookie of the year votes!

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

We had him in pre-draft training. He was very good at the Orlando pre-draft camp. But who ever pays attention to those things anyway. He's a dynamic scorer with shooting range.

David (SoDak)

Hey there Mr. Thorpe, hope you had a great week with all of the March Madness. Which 2 prospects do you think helped there chances with good showings in the tourneys and which 2 had their draft stock plummet?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Samhan and Udoh, probably. Harangody and Reynolds on the other end.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear David Could you see the NBA not having there player at the Olympics after 2012?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, in fact I'd like to see them use an age-limit. 22 and under and no pro's for any country.

James (Australia)

Missed ya last week. Just wondering, what are you thinking of the recent play of Ibaka? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I think it's fantastic (I used Seinfeld's voice on that one).

Eric (Orlando)

Do you think Dwight Howard is ready to lead the Magic to a championship or does his offensive game still have to improve for that to happen?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I think he's ready now.

Marc (Calgary)

By "Wow" on the Joakim Noah-on-the-Raps hypothetical do you mean they'd be good, or "wow" at how I'm stuck in fantasyland.. ;)

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

They'd be much better. He's what they need, but then again, he's what everybody needs.

Mike (AZ)

Should Hobson from UNM turn pro?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Probably.

Vensin (Your Facebook Friend)

Dave! You never answer my questions! But I like how none of your Rookie to Veteren contained anyone trying to immulate Kobe, because you know Kobe can't be copied, not even close.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I did answer it. Guess it got swallowed up somehow. I've used Kobe before in that report. His work ethic is to be admired and studied.

Matt (St. Paul, MN)

David, love your chats but haven't been @ one for a while. We Wolves fans are grasping at straws this time of year - do you think Darko's game could be rehabbed? If he was your client, any thoughts on an approach that you would take?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Darko has totally forgotten how to play athletically. Everything is a soft hook. I'd have him dunking 100 times a day.

MC Welk (SLC)

Jazz paid attention in Portsmouth. That's how they found Matthews.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

You mean they learned something new after seeing him for 4 years in college? And not even getting him on their summer league team?

Dingo and the Baby (America)

If the Timberwolves win the John Wall lottery, where does that put Flynn and Rubio? Do they even select Wall?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I wrote an article about that this week.

Bryan (DC)

I thought it was interesting that you paired Blair with Dirk. Wouldn't he be better studying the shot of someone like KG? Not a deep threat like Dirk, but able to knock down that 18 footer off the pick and roll? They already have the similar motor.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

It's about technique.

Nick (Sioux Falls)

I'm not the only person in Sioux Falls reading this! Hi Josh!

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Guys-there are enough social networks to choose from that are better than my chat session!!

Justin (Minneapolis)

David, do you think Kevin Love will be a T-Wolf next season? I don't get it...Darko is starting over him and he seems to be in Rambis' doghouse.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I have to say-it's all very confusing.

Marcos ((Puerto Rico))

Hey David love your articule. If you have to give aplayer tu watch yo Earl Clark Who would it be?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I would definitely have chosen...Kobe.

Brad (NM)

You really think Hobson will get first round consideration? Lobo fans will cry out loud if he declares. What are your thoughts on Caracter from UTEP?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Hobson is very likely a top 20 guy, based on talent. He has a number of skills desired by NBA teams. I love DC, and think he's on the right path now.

Robin (Johannesburg)

Hi David,First, great chat and thoroughly love your work. You need to understand basketball to get it though in my humble opinion. Is Jazz stuck in mediocrity because of not good enough players or coach Sloan's (whom i have a huge respect for) methods or small market & poor management issues? With the current squad, what do they need to do to even think of becoming a legit contender? Thanks for the insightful reads.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Thanks. I'm hoping to visit your great city soon. They have been a bit unlucky with injuries. They still need a better two than what Mathews can give.

Dave Pierce (eSellOut.com)

I recently read that DeJuan Blair could be used in a sign and trade deal with Toronto for Chris Bosh in the offseason. Any validity to this?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Sure, but he'd be just one piece. Raps would want Manu and more.

John (Ocala, FL)

Do you think Chandler Parsons will make it to the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

No, but he certainly could. He's their best prospect, probably. I love his game, now he needs to bring more intensity every night.

Joe (NYC)

Luol Deng hasn't played a full season in 3 years. Is it fair to label him injury prone at this point? Love his game, but he's got to be able to give Chicago more than 60-65 games a season.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

What good does labeling do? I remember when Camby had that label. Hopefully he'll be fine going forward. Injuries are a funny thing.

Joe (NYC)

Are the Knicks really sold on Toney Douglas as their point guard of the future? He looks solid, but so did Chris Duhon in his first season under D'Antoni. I feel like it couldn't hurt to get in the Darren Collison sweepstakes this summer...

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Not at all. I'd be shocked if they didn't shot for one this summer.

Terrance(pearl city hi) [via mobile]

Whats the odds lebron is a knick next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

6.5%? I have no idea.

Paul (Oak Park, IL (soon to be back in Portland))

David, have you seen the rumors out of Portland that Kevin Pritchard may not be with the Blazers next season? That would be absolutely ludicrous, wouldn't it?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Pretty much, yes. I expect him to be back.

Brian (CA)

Lebron is the best basketball player in the world hands down. However, there is still one element that separates Kobe from Lebron. Kobe is a proven champion and as of now Lebron isn't.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

So is Josh Powell. And?

Jason (Boston)

David, I always hate those "can this good CBB team beat this bad NBA team" discussions, because the answer is basically always NO. But... if the '09-'10 Nets played a 7-game series with '96 Kentucky, could UK steal a game? I feel like they could.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Negative.

John (Tallahassee)

Would a Miami-Orlando 1st round series be as competitive as the season series seems to suggest? (Alliteration!)

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

No.

Tim (Lansing)

David, off all the athletes you have worked with, which one did you enjoy working with the most and why?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

It's impossible to pick one. I love Tony Gaffney. Walter Hodge. Daniel Santiago. David McClure. Tasheed Carr. Aaron Jackson. Rob Kurz is a dream. When you get to your 40's, and have coached longer than many of my students have been alive, you just smile and become grateful that you get to do what I do.

Vensin (Thanks for answering!)

But it would be SWEET! To get another in! Question: Do you think JJ of the Cavs is 'That Good' or is he just a product of how great Lebron is? Will the playoffs be different for his production?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I've always been high on him. This game is 5 on 5 for a reason-guys are SUPPOSED to help each other.

josh (sioux falls, sd )

hey nick! want to get lunch?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Alright, that's enough!

Heath (Dallas)

Hey coach, I've been meaning to ask this question for a while. When listing the best jump shots of all-time, Reggie Miller's name is often near the top of the list---and his numbers certainly support that. But he has to have one of the ugliest shots ever. You would never teach a player to push his off hand thumb out and create side spin. So while he was obviously incredibly productive, he doesn't actually have a great jump shot, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Wrong. It may not have been technically perfect, but you don't get awarded any points for looking good, do you?

John (Tallahassee)

Did you say 'No' three times because you are trying to convince yourself that Miami-Orlando wouldn't be exciting!?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

No. I'd love to see that series.

Patrick (Louisville)

Do you see T-Will being a future star at some point in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I don't, but I have to tell you, I really love watching him play when he's not forcing things. He's an incredible athlete with huge hands and great passing skills.

Terrell (SC)

hey dave. What are your likes and dislikes about Jrue Holiday from the sixers?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I like his size and disposition to defend and bang. I'd like him to be more fiery.

Nick (Wisconsin)

What will a guy like Scott Skiles be remembered for when he stops coaching? Seems like anywhere he goes he is successful for a few years then for whatever reasons his teams lose focus or something. Seems to be a great coach but is there something else that fans don't see that cause the decline of his teams in year 3-4, etc.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I'm not ready to answer that. Let's see what happens in Deer Town.

Doug (Chicago)

Any chance of a deal centered around Kevin Love for Luol Deng?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Very doubtful.

Tom (Vegas)

Hey Coach, any truth in the rumors that you will be in Brooklynn next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, I plan to visit the Chocolate Room with my wife, we didn't get around to it this year when we were in NYC for Valentines Day. We're doing a big trip overseas for our 20th anniversary and I hope to stop in NYC before or after.

Skinny Pete (Milwaukee)

What can Brandon Jennings do to become a better finisher with his floaters and runners? He seems to miss alot of em wide open.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Just keep practicing them. He has some technical issues to fix.

Harry (Babylon)

Are there any rivlaries today that have the potential to match up to the 80's Lakers-Celtics?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

No. But if Miami and Cleveland both added another star, then Wade vs. Bron would be on.

Derek (Boston)

Can you please explain whats going on with Omri Casspi? Give the guy some minutes!

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I can't remember a rookie falling so far in such a short time. He was #1 in my report just 2 months ago!!

Justin (Glassboro, NJ)

What an awesome game winning dunk by Josh Smith last night! Now if Harden can use his athleticism like that, that'd be impressive...

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Yep.

Jason (Oakland)

Anyway Step Curry can win ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Not really.

Joel (Tucson)

What do you think about Hill and Budinger reuniting in Houston and their potential in the future.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I'm very high on both.

Nick (Chicago)

who would you rather sign in the offseason if you are the bulls? chirs bosh, or dwayne wade?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Whoever signs first.

Alec (Chicago)

Hi Coach,I am so glad that Joakim is getting a lot of recognition this year, it was tough to watch him go from a back to back champion to not making the playoffs in his rookie season. I think Derrick Rose is definitely the best player on the Bulls, but Jo is their heart and soul. Do you think players that have a motor like Joakim's tend to last longer because they can outwork younger players? Do you think he has a shot at the Hall? If so, what does he need to do to get there?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Woa, slow down Alec. Let's watch him win a playoff series first. One step at a time.

Adnan (Chicago,IL)

Derrick Rose has improved his jumper considerably and is starting to shoot three pointers... What else can he work on?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Passing would be nice.

allan (riverside)

Who is your fav color analyst these days on tv?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I think the guy from the Clippers does a good job. Fratello is solid. But I don't pay much attention, for the most part.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I'm sorry everyone-but In have to leave early today. I hope you all have a great weekend. Be safe. See you next week.
