Chat with Bill Williamson

Dan (Scotia, NY)

It's rather obvious that the Raiders have a difficult time developing young talent, but with all of the issues surrounding the QB position do you see anyway that they draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th round this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

The Raiders have had good look picking in the fourth round and beyond. I think they culd look at someone like Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour.

Steve (Denver)

Any chance Denver could still be in the hunt for McNabb? He is better than Orton and Quinn.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I think that chatter is over.

Terry (Quantico, Va)

With all the talk of Oakland looking for one of the 3 QB's in Philly, what are the chances of them actually landing a QB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Expet a new QB in Oakland, either through the draft or through a trade. It's clear the Raiders feel like they need a new QB.

Amy (La Jolla, Ca)

Hi Bill, great job with your blog. With the progress being made in Denver and KC, should the Chargers and their fans be worried?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

Thanks Amy, I think the Chargers are still clelary the best team in the division.

Trevor (Saratoga Ny)

How long do you think it will take for Brady Quinn to be the starter in Denver?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

If he makes strides and Orton doesn't, I say Quinn is the starting QB in 2011.

Ryan (Michigan)

Last year the Broncos surprised me with picking Moreno with their first pick. I thought defensive line was the obvious choice. This year linebacker seems like a glaring need. Do you think the Broncos could surprise us again this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Sure, McD could take a WR. The man loves offense.

Mike (Fallbrook, Ca)

What type of running back best suits the Chargers offense, in your opinion?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

With Sproles already in he mix, I'd say a pounder would fit well.

Marshall (NJ)

I've seen rumors that Al Davis is infatuated with CJ Spiller. Is there still a trade market for Michael Bush that would allow for the Raiders to do the unthinkable and draft another 1st round RB and ignore the OL yet again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

That's the last posiiton Oakland needs right now.

Joel (Point Loma)

The Chargers have the 28th and now the 40th pick. Do they target the nose tackle then running back or vise versa? Which position has more depth in this years draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Running back is deeper, so I would say nose tackle could be the choice at No. 28 if the right guy is there.

Chris E (San Diego, CA)

Hey Bill, what are the chances of the Chargers taking Toby Gerhart?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

I think he is one of the guys San Diego is really looking at hard.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Have the Broncos been making themselves better this offseason or merely making some moves that look like they are trying but are mostly patch work that won't hold up for too long?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

I think the d-line is better, so the defensive in general should be improved.

Darren (Oklahoma)

I heard Denver worked out Toby Gerhart yesterday. Do you know how that went or the level of interest Denver has in the RB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Ys, I've hear that, too. Denver needs a pounder back. But the Broncos have a lot of needs and they have bigger needs than RB in the first two rounds. Taking Moreno in the first round one year and Gerhart in the second round the next may not make a lot of sense when there are bigger needs.

P.Mcg (Sac)

What chance do the Raiders have in getting Mc Nabb?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I think they are in the mix, but I don't think he has any interest in going there. Sue, it is not his call, but McNabb and Reid have a good relationship and I'm not sure Reid would want to send McNabb somehwere where he has no interest in being ... But in the end, business is business, so the Raiders have a chance.

Gucci (Sandy eggo)

I remember seeing something about the chargers getting marshawn lynch. I'm sure its a long shot, but anything more about this?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

We addressed it on the blog a couple of weeks ago. Yes, long shot for sure.

Brad (MO)

Bill, Let's say that the best-case scenario happens for the Chefs, and both Berry and Okung are available at 5. I can't decide which one I should want the Chefs to pick...I think my decision should be based on the talent available in the 2nd. Thus, I'd like to know which position you think is deeper this year, OT or S?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think the OT is a litle stronger. I'd take Berry.

Pat (Manhattan, Kansas)

Hey Bill...How do you see the Broncos addressing their need for a starting center -- in-house, draft or free agency? And you think they'll draft defense (BIG linemen) early this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

I think they really want Pouncey from Florida.

Joe (Denver (CO))

Are the Broncos done fixing their D-Line, or could we see them go after Dan Williams at #11?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

I think LB and WR will be looked at first.

Dan (Scotia, NY)

If the Raiders draft an Offensive Tackle with the #8 pick, is there any way that they draft Terrence Cody, DT - Alabama, with their 2nd round pick? I know he's better suited for a 3-4 D, but we need help up front if Seymour is going to continue rotating around the front 4...

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I think Cody will be snapped up by a 3-4 team.

Justin (Spokane)

Hey Bill great work. Any chance the Broncos can bring in T.O. if they trade Marshall and draft defense and o line with their high draft picks?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

I could see Owens as an option if Marshall is traded and Dnver doesn't take a receiver early in the draft.

Conrad (Plano, TX)

Any chance the Chargers are holding on to Sproles only to deal him during the draft as trade leverage?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I guess anything is possible, but I expect him to be in San Diego this season.

Steve (Denver)

Any new info about B. Marshall going to Seattle?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

The Seahawks ae talking preliminary contract details with Marshall. The process continues. It may take until the draft weekend.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Bill, Does it look like Morrison and Howard will be back? What are the odds that Morrison loses the starting job to brown?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Howard will defintely be back and I'd think Morrison will return as well.

Jim (Detroit)

Hey Bill what are your thoughts on KS trading Glenn Dorsey to the lions for lions 4th round pick and they swap 1st round picks?? This way KC could get a 3-4 style DT/DE and Detroit could get an OT and Dorsey.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

It wouldn't be the worst idea. Not bad.

Jeff (Marin, CA)

Raiders quarterback of the future- Jamarcus Russell, 2010 2nd-4th rounder, or 2011 1st rounder?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

2011 first-rounder.

Marshall (NJ)

Why does everyone think LeFevour will end up in Oakland? He has no arm, no way he's on Al Davis's radar.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

K>C> just looked at him this week.

jimmy (portage wi.)

why would denver pick up quinn if they really thought orton was thier guy?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Exactly. They clearly don't think Orton is the clear-cut guy of the future.

Chris (Amarillo (TX))

Are there concerns in Denver about the health of Ryan Harris? I noticed that Josh McDaniels specifically mentioned the strength of this year's OT class in the hour long interview session earlier this week. Is the injury more worrisome than they're letting on?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I don't think it is dire yet. But I'm not sure if Harris is compleltey healthy.

Scott (Wichita, KS)

As Brandon Marshall's value continues to fall on the trade market, does the possibility that Denver offer's him a fair contract extension increase or do you think the Broncos will end up giving him away just to get rid of him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

I think Denver's main goal here is to trade him. That could change later if there is no good offers.

Walt (Boone, NC)

Are the Broncos set in stone with starting Kyle Orton?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

For this year.

Pat (Manhattan, Kansas)

I suspect it's not unlike a lot of cities where the team is either struggling or not meeting fans' expectations, but McDaniels catches a lot of heat in the Denver blogs. I think it's unjustified, but from your interaction with McDaniels, you think he's got the stuff to make it as an NFL coach?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think he has a decent shot. I think he is a smart guy who knows what he wants. There has been some rough waters, but I think can be good.

Nick (KC)

Do you think the acquisitions of Crennel and Weis will be the biggest moves KC (has made) will make this offseason?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Right up there with Thomas Jones. The coaching additions are big.

James (Nashville)

The Chargers seem to consistently make surprise picks in the early rounds of the draft. Given that everyone seems to think they'll take a NT or RB (or maybe a CB) with their early picks, can you imagine any surprises that people aren't talking about?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I think the surprises may be trades. I wouldn't be shocked if A.J. Smith moves the No. 28 and No. 40 picks and turns them into higher or more picks.

matt (PA)

Bill, the chargers should go NT first round then 2nd or 3rd pick up a Gerhart type back, your thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

I think it would be a pretty nice start to the draft.

Tarek (NYC)

Is M. Huff the starting SS? Do they say M. Mitchell as a better option at SS? Thanks in advance Bill.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

I think Huff did OK last year. Mitchell still needs to develop.

Walt (Boone, NC)

Why wouldn't Thomas Jones been a no-brainer to start in KC, he was a very good runner for the Jets, and the Bears and he really didn't show signs of slowing down last season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Jones and Charles will work great together, but Charles needs to get the primary carries because he is young and so dangerous.

NS (CAN)

who will play inside LB for Den this year now that Davis is gone? Any chance Woodyard gets this spot

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Woodyard or Alabama LB Rolando McClain. I think he'd be a nice pick up at No. 11.

Mark (San Diego, CA)

Billy, There has been a lot of chatter about the bolts being full of holes. Whats your take? Are they losing their grip on the division or have they added by subtraction?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

That is my column topic next week .. Here's an early taste: Don't be so woried.

Pat (Manhattan, Kansas)

ESPN reported that Brandon Marshall's agent was at the owner's meetings this week, partly for other clients, but it was insinuated that it related to some movement in talks with Seattle. What did you hear?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

They're talking, but I've seen Mashall's agent at the owner's meetings every time I've been there.

Jack (Atlanta)

Besides nose tackle and running back, where else do you see the Bolts investing their picks?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

CB, DE, LB, RT, TE.

Dan C. (Albany, NY)

If Oakland goes for an OL in the first round of the draft, is there any way that they could select Florida MLB Brandon Spikes in round two??

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Sure, I could easily see that.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour folks, thanks. Talk to you next week.
