Hey everybody, We're here with Mike and Gavin, so keep the questions coming and they'll get to as many as they can...
This one is for Gavin. I'm a freshman attacker in high school and think you're sick on Saturdays. God must be a Tarheel since the skys are Carolina blue.
Thanks Frank, Being down in Chapel Hill has been a great experience. I love the school campus and sporting events and yes there are a good amount of Bells down here in the spring time.
Who on your team has the hardest shot? I know you guys have some people who can absolutely bring the heat!
Chris Madalon actually has the fastest shot, around 105 mph. He is a real monster with a short stick.
You guys at UNC have been tearing it up on the field this season but what do you guys do off the field? I've really been into NHL '10 lately. Do you guys play? What's your gamer tag so we can play online?
Off the field we play a ton of video games, for example, BBB's screename is 'Gamerandlaxer11'. I am a big NHL 2010 fan and play with my roomates all the time. I used to dominate when I had Shane Walt as a partner, but I am currently still searching (Maybe Gavin?).
Off the field, I really enjoy hanging with my bros, and gaming a good bit. I do play NHL '10 and have been known to DANGLE with my man JARV wuite hard. Come find me on XBox Live - POPD1DDLY
Who do you think can win it all this year knowing what we have seen so far?
This year seems to be just like the rest as all the major programs are in the mix. I definitely think the ACC and Big East will put out some Final Four teams
JHU over Virginia is a longshot, right? Please tell me it is.
Both teams are great and I'm gonna enjoy watching them play on ESPN2 this weekend.
I've always wanted to go to UNC. What is your favorite thing about being at school there? Also, is it true Chapel Hill is stocked with Southern Bells in the spring time?
Chapel Hill is an incredible place with lots of favorite things to choose from. I would say my favorite part is just being part of the athletic program here. As for the southern Belles, I would suggest a trip down here to see for yourself...
Gavin, what change has had a bigger impact on your game - switching from a Blackberry to an iPhone or switching from Brine/Warrior to STX?
Switching from blackberry to iphone has really impacted me quite a bit. I have been flying around on there for almost a week now and am really enjoying my apps. STX/Nike have really provided us with some great gear this year which has been awesome - all of my teammates are enjoying the switch
So Jarv, according to Ryan Flanagan, Gavin "Pop" Petracca is the stick doctor on the squad...how did you manage to have a well-kept wand in highschool?
Hey guys! Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your great lax thoughts with us. Gavin, I have noticed on tv how fresh your wand is. Do you put any sort of shampoo, such as "mane and tail" into your mesh? SET rules bro. Michael, other than a praying mantis, what you consider yourself sort of a velociraptor type defenseman? You are sure killin' it out there bro.
Cody, You are right about Gavin being a real wand doctor. He has been hooking me since my freshman year. In high school, when I didn't have Gavin, I usually just stopped by the local Play it Again Sports and paid $15 for a new string job.
Seamus, I used to put a bit of conditioner on my wand before stringing it up, but now I just go with the bottom end of a baseball bat, which really breaks the pocket in nice.
Michael, congrats on the season thus far. I've heard you work on your poke check by side shuffling around the outside of your practice field and poking at every pole on the chain linked fence. How essential is the poke check to your game and do you think youngsters should follow in your footsteps and develop a lethal poke as well ?
Hey John, Although that is a great drill you mention, that is not how I practice the poke check. I am more of a poke check alley guy - better team drill.
Do you guys like snakes?
I do not like snakes, but I know one of my real good friends on the team Connor Steidle - aka sloth - loves snakes.
Personally I don't like snakes, but I know my roomate Mike Burns does.
Gavin, how many sticks can you string in 20 minutes?
I can string about 35 twigs in 20 minutes. I've become pretty quick at it.
What does Charlie McComas do on his free time?
That's a good question. I don't live with him so I can't say for sure, but I think he spends a lot of his free time studying and browsing the internet. Charlie loves checking out the forums to see what the latest gossip is...
Jarvis - In the 2010 UNC media guide, you said you have an interest in mid to large size dogs. What about little ones, such as toy poodles?
I still do like little ones, even toy poodles, just not as much.
Gavin, how do you string up those nasty twigs that you use?
I've experimented with a lot of string styles over the years and the current way I string them is real tight up top with a nice bag down low so I can handle the ball and I also have a good amount of whip so I can bring the high heat.
Gavin - Does CP REALLY love pizza?
CP loves pizza more than anyone I know. Except maybe Grimes, who LOVES Grimes Slices.
Looking at offensive stats so far this year it's pretty impressive how spread out the scoring have been for you guys. 7 guys with double digit points. What has been the key to such a balanced offensive production so far?
This year we have really worked on as coach Myers puts it 'making singles' and being unselfish. When we do keep the ball hot, it gives everyone a chance to be a big part of our offense and everyone has done a great job of finishing opportunities.
I think the main reason for our offense being successful is their unselfishness. It is fun to watch from the other end of the field because you can sense everyone wants each other to score.
Jarvis... Does your goofy/awkward duck feet help you or hurt you when you are defending against COD (change of direction) at GLE (Goal line extended)?
Thanks Spawn. I would say that my feet help me against COD. Lots of times, I can get opposing players to step on my foot while they are dodging, which can be an advantage.
Question for Michael Jarvis- I noticed that most D1 defensemen are pretty muscular, but you seem tall and lanky- do you work ever work out? Gavin.. keep doing what you do...Sticking G's.... Also, what are your guys thoughts being the first team to play in the new Giants Stadium against UVA? I hear a lot of alumni will be supporting yall! As always GO HELLS!!!!!
I'm really excited to play in the new Giant Stadium - I've been a huge Jets fan since I was real young and am looking forward to checking out the new locker rooms and stadium!
Gavin are you ready to bring the NCAA Championship Trophy back to 'Set? It hasnt seen our neck of the woods since Diconza and I brought her home in '05
I would love nothing more than to bring the championship back to Manhasset this year. Our team is taking everything one game at a time and trying to stay focused on the next game.
Is it safe to say that Jarvis is the worst dressed student at UNC?
Jarv has a very different fashion sense. Lets just say he's wearing cut off sweatshorts with a polo shirt right now.
I've heard you are both avid fans of the video game Halo 3...can you elaborate on your gaming strategies and how you pwn so well?
My halo skills are centered around being a really good driver on Valhalla. I had a perfection the other day on that level, so that's when I'm at my best.
Hey what's up fellas?? I played in high school with Greg McBride, how is he playing so far this season??
Greg is doing real well. He has been playing on both sides of the field so far and he is one of the most physical guys on our team.
Gavin... A Chicken Parm from a Muholland or a chance to play one more time against Garden City in the Wood Stick Classic?
Being from 'Set, you always want one more time against GC in a WoodStick Classic.
It appears that you have graduated from second bar syndrome with your helmet which you rocked your first 3 years at Carolina. Who was the biggest influence in you starting to wear your helmet like a normal laxer?
Kevin Federico and, of course, GavLax have hooked me with this. I have been struggling for a number of years now with my helmet positioning, but it seems like I finally figured it out.
Gavin/Michael, who has the best flow on the team?
Right now Sean Jackson has some pretty epic flow. He slicks it back too which makes him look even better.
How do you think UNC will handle the Maryland Offense
I think our defense matches up well with Maryland's offense. They have a lot of talent and size, but so do we so it should be a good fight. Coach Breschi has put in a ton of time preparing us for them.
QUESTION FOR GAV-WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PRO TEAMS
My favorite pro teams are the New York Jets and Long Island Lizards
Gavin- Where did you learn to dangle so well...was this based from your Manhasset roots?
We had a great rec program in Manhasset from a young age. A lot of All-Americans from town would come back and helpout and I always just tried to pick up little things from those guys. It was a great experience as a little kid.
It seems like you guys are so fired up for every game, who are your motivational leaders on game day and how do they help your team?
We look to our captains for inspiration and also a lot to the whole Senior class. We are real close and that makes it easier.
Whenever I have a sick take away I have been saying "DONUT mind if I do!" What do you like to say whenever you detwig someone with an OTH at GLE.
I actually like saying 'Don't Mind if I Do!' too. I think it's an important part of taking the ball away from an opponent.
What are the chances that Michigan will ever get a Division 1 program for Men's Lacrosse? They were the MCLA Champions last year, just seems like it would be a great D1 Program.
It is great to see more teams get programs and I look forward to seeing more teams participating at the DI level. It would really help the sport expand.
I am not sure what Michigan's chances are. I know the club level is becoming pretty competitive compared to DI so it seems like it could happen soon.
Gavin-what is your favorite dodge to get past your defenders to end up in a dangle situation?
My favorite move has to be the finalizer to get topside then finish with a low-to-high rip.
Favorite meal at Suttons?
Double cheeseburger, fries, black and white milkshake.
Gavin, I understand your teammate (and fellow ESPN chatter) Michael Jarvis also goes by Jerv/Jervis. Which I noticed sounds a lot like the NY Jets pro-bowl corner back who has the last name of Reevis. Any connection between the two and their ability to lock down their opponents?
I'd like to think of Jarvis as a lockdown defender and a lot of guys on our team refer to attackmen that he's encountered over the course of a season as taking a trip to JERVISLAND.
How good is Bucknell?? 3 loses but all 3 came in OT
We scrimmaged Bucknell in the preseason and they were great. Coach Lattimore is doing a real nice job there with the offense, it seems like.
FOR GAVIN PETRACCA-RUMOR WAS IT YOUR NICK NAME IS "WEAPON OF CHOICE" HOW DID YOU GET THAT NAME?
Well, I was in Inside lacrosse's 'Weapon of Choice' article in the magazine, and my uncle's buddy and his son continued calling me that.
When is it approrpriate to throw the big time take away checks, (oth checks, wrap checks, etc.), and Gavin do you prefer defenders who go for the huge home run checks so you can get topside?
Any time a DMan presses out, it opens up opportunities to get top side you just have to tuck your stick and be ready for pressure.
Alright folks, after an epic (and interesting) hour, Gavin and Michael have to get on with the rest of their days... Thanks to everybody who submitted questions. Be sure to check out ESPNU when the Tar Heels take on Maryland in a battle of unbeatens on Saturday at 2PM. We'll be blogging it live on InsideLacrosse.com as well, so bring your laptop to keep you company while you watch the game!
