Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Hello all. Thanks for coming by. Hope you've seen or will look at today's column about return men and the Colts and Titans.

Stuart (Virginia)

Does Bo Scaife have any trade value? That would throw Stevens and Cook into the mix going along with the "youth movement" and maybe get something of value back.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

His contract is huge. I can't see who's trade for that. They're going to use all three.

Brian (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul, why not add two more wild card teams for the playoffs? OT rule change is a "pretty dress" but if you want to generate revenue and increase interest go that route. There are enough fringe teams that don't make which had good enough seasons. I know as a Jag fan we've had a few years where we could have benefited. Titans and Texans as well.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Expanding the playoffs searching for additional revenue is the wrong reason. Basketball and hockey let too many teams in, watering down the regular season and making me far less interested. Football should not do the same. Perfect as is in my eyes.

Brian (Murfreesboro)

I know you do not have the magic 8 ball but who do you think the top three guys that the Titans feel they have a shot at picking up at number 16? Also any updates on White, and are the odds he will be back as a Titan next year. Thanks love the radio show in the morning.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

The odds on White look to be 100 percent. Where is he going? Titans will look hard at best ends and corners available there.

Xrayvsn (Murfreesboro, TN)

Do you find it interesting Jim Caldwell would suggest that the colts will try to incorporate a 4 receiver set? I think its more of a strategic ploy, possibly trying to get other divisional rivals to possibly change their draft strategy so that maybe a player Colts want might fall to them. Otherwise why would you give a head start for other teams to prepare for this, rather than spring it on them during the regular season with an element of surprise.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Overthinking. It makes sense for them to play some four-wide based on personnel. Whether they have three or four, division opponents know they need corners and a rush to hurry Manning to stop Indy. Teams aren't changing their draft plans based on minor rumblings about a slight change.

Denise (Indy)

Regarding Colts' depth at defensive end, what can you tell us about potential of John Chick, their recent CFL signing (think he was CFL def player of year)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I can tell you I will be researching him soon.

justin gladhill (indiana)

hey pk, with the colts needing depth at corner, defensive end, and o-line, which need would you try to address first? thanx.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I think the O-line piece(s) will have a chance to play from the start, so I'd say O-line. But they don't draft in order of need.

cris (palm springs,ca) [via mobile]

Do u see the jags improving from last year. They were fairly solid on offense but D was lacking. Do you think they turn a corner and make a serious playoff push?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I wouldn't cal them fairly solid on offense. They have a long way to go. But I think Smith has a handle on what he's doing and they will get another infusion of young talent.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Do you find it ironic that the Vikings lost in OT in the NFC Championship game and Brett Favre never got to touch the ball, yet they were one of the 4 teams that voted against the OT rule change?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Good for them. You know Peyton and Colts lost in same scenario in 2008 playoffs.

James (Indy)

PK, can I interest you in a timeshare in sunny Ft. Wayne, Indiana?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Pass!

Stuart (Virginia)

Would you rather see Britt and Gage starting with Washington in the slot like he was in Pitt, or Britt and Washington starting?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I'd like to see all three of them playing great and the Titans able to move those two around based on matchups. To me that's ideal.

Shaun (TN)

Tell me what you think. I think it makes great sense for the Titans to go with Javier Arenas in the second round. They get a decent CB that could play nickel if Fuller is gone in the next year or two. And they get a stud return man. Kind of a two birds with one stone, although it doesn't necessarily solve the CB situation this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Great plan, except for the part where the Titans don't have a second round pick.

Pac Man (Drizzling toward Detroit)

How many games do you think I can play before I'm all over the news for a fracas in a skrip club in Detroit?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

I don't believe they will sign you.

Edward (Long Beach, CA)

Are players going to start tighter helmets, or what? If they are going to blow plays dead when a helmet comes off, the players need to be able to keep their helmets on better. Because I see helmets come off as often as 4-5 times in game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I disagree with that estimate. Once every two games in what I saw last year. I really don't think this is going to wind up being a huge issue.

Nashville Lady (coffee shop)

I can explain. I was putting flyers in the Nashville Scene newspaper advertising your chat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I couldn't see what they were, but I know they weren't that. And I wouldn't want to steal such advertising, thank you.

Finley (via mobile)

I know you're angry I picked Kentucky over Cornell, but it's rainy out here. Please let me back in the house.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Not until the game is over Mister. You're lucky the lady of the house is also with you on this pick, still bitter over Temple loss and with Kentucky winning on her bracket.

TJ (Houston, TX)

What is the likelyhood that the Texans will draft a RB in the 1st round? If they took a RB, who would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Well, I don't see C.J. Spiller there at 20. Perhaps Ryan Mathews of Fresno State? If they have a corner or safety they love there, I hope they'll go defensive back first.

John (Athens, Oh)

Will Taylor Price be an impact rookie in the NFL? Or will he be soon forgotten..

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

My crystal ball is broken today. Also my Magic 8 ball and my Core Secrets Gunnar Peterson ball.

Allen (Houston)

PK, loved you in Die Hard by the way.... So ive seen a couple of onterviews of Owen Daniels and everytime someone asks him about his contract, he has this smirk on his face and you can see he is very unhappy about the status. If you were the texans, and OD comes back fully from the injury, do you give him a new contract to get him into OTA's and training camp, or wait the whole year before you decide?? he seems to be labeled as a "system" TE, but i truly believe he is a top 3 guy behind Clark and Davis... thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Concerns: This is three ACL injuries and there is a lockout looming. I don't think they system tight end part is really in the mix. Tough call, but I can see why they aren't jumping.

James (Franklin, IN)

Based on your returned article, will Tim Graham make his way onto an AFC South team this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Here's what a scout told me about Graham: No straight line speed. No lateral movement skills. No vision. Minimal football IQ. Red flagged for addiction to Dungeons & Dragons.

danny (nj)

Owusu-Ansah reminds me of Tony Bekham but a returner as well. He's not as appealing as McCluster though as a Titans fan because I'd think McCluster would contribute more. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

You lost me at Beckham.

Kalvis (Indy)

I spent a year in Chicagoland and gained first hand knowledge of how hated Ron Turner was there. How can a guy who essentially failed at his job for 6 years help improve the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Well he's got much less of a role. He can be a bad coordinator and a good hands on position coach with receivers.

Gucci (Sandy Eggo)

Great work Paul. Just thinking about the Titans this offseason. When we lose mawae, bulluck, VDB, Kearse, and a few others(considering mawae and bulluck do leave). Replace with Will witherspoon, and Babin, along with a first and two thirds in the draft. How do you think we did and what do you think we should've done if anything, to better this off season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

I don't factor Kearse in there at all, he was a zero in 2009. I think there is a big loss of leadership. Going young isn't bad. Going young all at once is, at least in part, bad planning. You need to do it two spots at a time, not five at once.

Awayne (INDY)

Better odds, predicting who Polian will draft or N.Iowa winning the NCAA championship?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

A wash?

White Goodman (Globo Gym)

PK, I hear you're doing that P90X crap. The only way you can get ripped is to join my gym. Please accept a free 30 day pass and a personal ride to the gym via my scooter.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Don't want ripped want lean. But Finley is intrigued by the scooter. Sidecar for him?

nathan (cleveland)

wha are your thought on the browns taking earl thomas at 7 if eric berry is gone ?Do you think hes a all pro caliber player

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I like him very much. But I think a lot of people fear a safety that high.

Finley (via mobile)

Dude, are you still going to say that Vandy has time? That killed my bracket, plus Manning has withdrawn his support of my campaign for Governor because I went with Vandy over UT. What now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

You can win Manning back. Just use the droopy ears, sad face trick and put your chin on his lap.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Will Devin McCourty go in the first round and do you think he is on the Titans radar?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Yes and probably. But so are a lot of other guys.

Tyler (Amarillo, TX)

Would you trust Kerry Collins to run the Titan's offense if Vince gets injured?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

With the current alternative, they don't have a choice. I'm on record that I would like to see them draft a developmental guy.

Sean (Houston)

Paul, Bill Polian is 1-5 in Super Bowls as a general manager. Bad luck or something to this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

It's kind of weird to say it that way. He builds SB caliber teams. Does he them play badly on the last Sunday of the season? Did he let an onside kick bounce off his facemask or miss Norwood's field goal?

Thomas (Nashville)

I read somewhere Tye Hill was visiting the Titans this week but havent seen it confirmed. Do you have any details? and do you think he could be a fit or would they be better off with someone in the Hood/Mouton/McCourty trio.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

He was scheduled to be in yesterday. You'd think he's Revis for how many questions he is generating.

Nate (Burns, TN)

Hey is there any chance that CBS opens with a UK montage set to Vaders Theme? Would that not be the greatest opening ever?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

They should totally do good versus evil. If the Big Red is ahead, I should run out and watch the last five minutes at a sports bar just to mock Kentucky fans. Oh it would be glorious.

Ryan (San Diego)

Mathews is falling to the Chargers at 28...it's been decided

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Oh. Sorry. Missed the memo.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

I hear a lot of talk among Titans fans about moving Jason Jones from DT to DE. What do you think about this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I know he's not moving. They think he's better at DT than DE, so why move him and create a need at DT?

Xrayvsn (Murfreesboro, TN)

What's your thoughts on having divisional games scheduled in the last 2 weeks so that teams don't rest their starters? I think it is sort of flawed because we already had an example of that when Colts relaxed and Titans won that last game to get into the playoffs making a lot of Browns fans unhappy

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

It'll help in some situations and not be relevant in others. Fact is, runaway teams with huge years probably aren't going to have huge incentive late and we'll have to live with it.

Adam Jones (Scrip Club)

Coach Fish had some good things to say about me, he should give me that second chance he talked about and bring me back to the Titans.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I've made my feelings on this clear. Coach Fish should recuse himself when the subject is Pacman.

Kalvis (Indy)

If you want lean, you should try Shaun T's Insanity program instead of P90X. It's from the same company.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

C'mon man, I'm three weeks into a 90 day commitment and you're trying to change me over?

Jason (Bmore)

Any thoughts on the Big Ben fiasco?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Let's slow down before the public conviction. Mike Silver had a good piece on this recently. Yes, Ben needs to make good decisions like all of them. But we need to slow down a little and see where the case goes.

bill (St. Pete)

Do you see Terrance Knighton and D. Cox becoming forces this upcoming year? That was one of the better consecutive draft picks in recent memory (as it relates to playing time at least).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Good players with bright futures for sure. They need a similarly successful set of consecutive picks this year.

Awayne (INDY)

Think the Colts will show any real interest in signing JaredGaither?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I think if they were interested we'd know by now.

Allen (Houston)

One player on each team that will surprise and come out of the doghouse. i nominate fred bennett of the texans

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Great question. Will post on it sometime soon.

Ryan Johnson (Brownstown, Jamaica)

What should be a higher priority for the Texans right now, finding a serviceable FS or finding another corner? I am hoping both will be addressed in the draft.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

I think it's hard to rate one above the other. I have been pushing free safety for two years now. But Eugene Wilson could be serviceable. Can three of their corners?

Kevin (Louisiana)

Can Witherspoon offset some of the leadership loss'... How about someone like CJ... Leaders need to be good at their position and he is the best and seems to have a solid work ethic.. couldn't he fill the leadership voids... Leadership certainly doesn't only mean experience because no one is listening to Donnie Nickey give pre game talks and he is probably the longest tenured Titan... you have to be someone that others look up to because of work and playing ability... I think they can find those guys easier than it's being said...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I disagree. Sure CJ can increase on that and guys like Ahmad Hall and Chris Hope will become more important. But Mawae, Crumpler, Bulluck and KVB were huge guys for that team. I'm not saying they should be keeping all or any of them, but all gone at once creates a leadership vacuum and that's not filled quickly or easily. You have to play well first, then earn leaderhip. When do all these kids have time to do that?

Hootie (Tecalote Canyon)

For or against the OT rule change?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Against. If you want both teams to touch it, decree there is at least one punt or kickoff. But I think it creates two very awkward and unnatural things: A safety can win the game but an early field goal cannot. (Two points wins but three doesn't?) And if you score a field goal on the opening possession, then I am going on it on every fourth down in an effort to get into field goal range to at least tie and extend the game. That's not "normal" football.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Have you heard anything about the development of SenDerrick Marks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Early for such reports.

Xrayvsn (Murfreesboro, TN)

Early in the offseason, there were talks about Hermindinger getting better opportunities elsewhere (notably Chicago), and how that would impact the Titans more than anything they could do in the offseason. Has that time period passed and is essentially Mike staying put?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Yes, staying put this year. If Chicago bombs, he should be at the head of its list next year.

Marky H (Nashville)

Just remember, you can't write the words you can't use on radio.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Thank you. Helpful. *&@^#^%

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, in one of your recent posts you mentioned the Titans were high on Mouton? Why? What changed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

A guy can be bad or in over his head early and improve.

clay (Nashville)

have you heard any of the detials of the Crumpler deal. I know he was a UFA, but did the Titans try to match.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I'm sure they didn't. Haven't seen the numbers.

Dan Marino (via mobile)

PK, just have a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and then a light dinner.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Loved the fake spike, dude.

josh (houston)

Even if there is a lockout in 2011, why would that keep the texans from resigning players? They will eventually come up with an agreement and football will go on so couldn't not signing them hurt our future team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

You want to pay a guy a huge bonus now in time to lock him out next year?

jim (detroit)

WHat are your thought on TO going to the colts??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Not happening. Colts are loaded at WR. Colts don't bring in outsiders. Colts have no interest in drama. I could go on and on.

Nate (Indy)

I think that a lot of fans in Indy would argue it's almost worse to have gotten to the Superbowl and lost than to have not gotten to the Superbowl at all. The city seems to still be smarting over the loss. It would be horrendous for our collective psyche to have a prolonged lockout prevent the Superbowl from coming here in 2012, and folks are already nervous about it. How many games do you think would need to be canceled in order for an entire season to be scrapped, including the Superbowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Let's think about that. You'd have rather not had the great two weeks of anticipation and quality game than suffered a loss? Thirty teams would happily change places. Let's not be over-dramatic. I do not think a lockout lasts long enough to cancel a Super Bowl.

Mad Mike ( Houston) (Texas)

Paul: Ryan is praying that Mathews fall to them. I am thinking the Texans will have Earl Thomas, Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson and maybe McCourty as their 20th pick. I think they like Mathews, but they need help in the defensive backfield. I would like to see the Texans take Toby Gerhart in the 2nd or 3rd round, love his style and he would bring some additional attitude and just run hard. One cut and go, he may not take it to the house, but he won't go down on first contact. Your Thoughts? Thanks.....MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I'd love Earl Thomas there. I don't think he lasts.

Awayne (INDY)

Is there a guy on each team you always try to get a couple of words with when you visit them, not because they are important, but they are just good guys to shoot the bull with?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Absolutely. But I don't necessarily get to know those types of guys too well in this position as I am spread out and not around them all the time. Daniel Loper was like that when he was in Tennessee. David Anderson is like that in Houston -- not that he isn't important.

Shakespear (london,ohio)

It is better to have played and lost than to have never played at all.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Absolutely, Will.

Jason (Bmore)

By the way, why don't more people use the fake spike? Was that just Marino savvy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Once it happened a few times, everyone started warning their guys to be on the lookout.

ron (georgia)

Any chance the Texans might give up a future 2nd to move into seattles pick at 14?Or package Dreessen and a J. Jones type deal to grab an early 2nd round pick with maybe the Rams or Chiefs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

You think teams with early second round picks are sitting around saying, "Man, if only we could trade this for Joel Dreessen and Jacoby Jones?"

Bryan (Antioch)

Is the p90x yoga as hard for you as it is me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

You don't like falling over 10 times?

Aaron (Lexington)

PK, I just talked to Coach Cal and John Wall and they want to dedicate tonights game to you... Really though do you think that Ingram is a real deal NFL LB? I think the Jags will need to do better what do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

I think Smith is the only guy they don't see as possible to upgrade over at LB.

Kalvis (Indy)

Both ESPN and ESPN2 are covering baseball. Why can't the MLB have a strike every year that keeps it from interfering with real sports until summer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

What exactly is it keeping off the air that you are dying to see? Bowling? Poker?

Awayne (INDY)

What the heck happened to Vanderbilt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Guy hit a great shot to beat them. But they need to make some foul shots before that.

Nate (Burns, TN)

If you were the Titans GM... and the second DE on your chart is available... but the top CB is available to... and you have both rated as first round picks... which would you take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Well, I wouldn't be basing it on second DE vs. first CB. Those guys are graded against each other two. I'd have faith in my board and if they second DE was rated higher, I'd take him, if the corner was, I'd take him. Or if the fifth CB rates better than the first DE I'd take him.

Jason (Philadelphia)

Think Pat McAfee gets the chance to kick PATs and Field goals if Vinatieri goes down again? think he gets reps in training camp in practice as the place kicker or just punter and KO specialist

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

They carried two kickers almost the whole year, and next season if AV is hurt all of a sudden they are gong to hand field goals to the punter? I don't see it unfolding that way.

Jason (Bmore)

Did Cortland Finnegan regress in your mind last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Injury set back hurt and I think it was an adjustment to being the guy instead of the surprise guy. But he was good at the end and remains a very good player.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Well folks, that flew by. Good hour. Good job by you. Maybe we'll do it again next week. I am due a chat week off, so we'll have to monitor demand.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Be well. Take the rest of the week off. Go Cornell!
