Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Nick (United Kingdom)

Despite the Panther's previous problems with drafting WR's, what do you think of the possibility of them drafting Mardy Gilyard?

James (SC)

Pat, is Alex Brown an option for the Panthers at DE now that he has been released?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:37 PM)

They've got to draft a WR. I'd guess he's one of the guys they're looking at. We've going to start the cha way early because I'm presently stranded and without a car. If the shop calls and say the car is ready, I might have to cut out a few minutes early near the end.

Jason (Greenville)

Pat, would Carlton Mitchell be a good fit in Carolina?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:38 PM)

Yes, I think he could fit the Moose role. Big receiver and can also block a bit.

K-Sly (Atlanta)

In mock drafts the Atlanta Falcons have been constantly mentioned to draft Graham, Weatherspoon, Pouncey, and DE form South Florida. If none of those talents are not avaliable at the 19th pick, wouldn't it be ideal for the Falcons to trade down in the first round and possibly pick up the second round pick they covet?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:39 PM)

Yes, but trading down is easier said than done. More so than usual, teams will be hesitant to trade up his year.

Steven (Chapel Hill)

Hey Pat, do you think Carolina will trade away next years 1st to get Brandon Marshall? Or do you think this deal could happen in any way shape or form?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:39 PM)

Doubt it. Don' think Panthers wan baggage.

Phil (Florence)

Will Connor step in and be a force as a Carolina LB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:40 PM)

Of course, he's a Penn State kid -- he's on his way to the Pro Bowl.

ONLY PANTHERS FAN IN LA (LA)

hey pat who do you think will be the panthers starting QB this season

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:40 PM)

Matt Moore.

Corey (Maryland)

Any chance the Panthers are active in FA before the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:41 PM)

Probably not much. They've got some nice compensatory picks headed their way next year. Signing FAs could jeopardize those picks.

Peter (Asheville)

with Tyler Brayton, Evrette Brown, Tank Tyler, Johnson, and Cory Irvine do you think the panthers will be ok up front? Adding Alex Brown would help, right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:42 PM)

Yep, keep an eye on that one. And keep an eye on him with another NFC South team.

Jimmy (Mt. Pleasant)

Is WR Jacoby Ford from Clemson, a reasonable pick for Carolina in the 3rd or 4th?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:43 PM)

Could be. But I also think they nee to get a bigger receiver.

Joshua (Atlanta, GA)

Pat I disagree with your outlook, on the Falcons DE Troy Bierman (SP). I don't get the feeling you've really watched him on the field. He had 5 sacks 7 QB hits 18 pressures in about half the snaps of a good majority of DEs got in the NFL. I'm calling it now, this kid will have 10 plus sacks in 2010 and at least 2 FF and 10 plus tackles for a loss. Will you fess up he's a better player than you give him credit for.....??? Thanks.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:45 PM)

Admit he's a decent player. Just not a finished product right now. If he gets 10 sacks this year, then you'll be right.

Jesse (Trezevant, TN)

Why hasn't TB done for Brooks what the Broncos just did for Elam? He is, by far, one of the best players the Bucs have ever had. What is going on? Are they not interested in showing a little loyalty, not only (and mainly!) to Brooks but also to all of us fans who absolutely love Derrick Brooks?!?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:46 PM)

Not entirely sure, but I think the desire to do that is there on the part of he Bucs. But not sure Brooks wants to do it a this poin. Think he sill might be biter about the way things went down.

Hank (DC)

Two big FA on the market Brown and Marshall I think could both help the Panthers....whats your take?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:46 PM)

Brown maybe. Marshall, I doubt it.

allen (ohio)

do you think the saints will get eny DT or DE that got cut from other teams?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:47 PM)

At some point, yes. Keep an eye on Alex Brown.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear PatCould you see Charlotte ever hosting a Super Bowl?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:48 PM)

Standard answer from the league is not enough hotels and weather can be uncertain there.

Brett (San Antonio, TX)

Is Steve Smith still an elite WR in the NFL? How much gas does he have left in the tank?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:49 PM)

Yes, haven't seen any signs of him slowing yet. He also needs some help from his QBs.

Jeff (Charleston, SC)

Hey Pat. Is Dimitroff looking at DE Alex Brown? If not, should he be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:50 PM)

From what I've heard so far, no. Think they're real serious about building through draft. Personally, I'd like to see them ge Brown, but I don't think it's happening.

Brock (Boulder)

Do the Falcons pick up a center in the 3rd round? Start replenishing early?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, I think you could see it somewhere around that point. Doesn't make lots of sense to take center too early in the draft.

Josh (Safety Harbor, FL)

Hey Pat, I wanted to post a message to all my fellow Bucs fans out there. Everyone needs to calm down!!! We had a perfect storm of loss of aging talent, a new couching regime and something a lot of people have overlooked to this point in your chats, the HARDEST schedule we have played in 6 years. We improved dramatically down the stretch, we are going to get some key players for our future in the coming draft and instead of playing the Cowboys, Jets, and Pats (in England no less as a home game) we get the Lions, Browns, and Rams. We will be better this year!

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:52 PM)

Wow, an optimistic Bucs fan.

Brett (San Antonio, TX)

What kind of impact can we expect from Harry Douglas this coming year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Suspect he'll be the slot receiver and fairly important to offense.

Brock (Boulder)

Do the Falcons use a late round pick or later on a kicker or is there some quality still out there in free agency?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Don't they still have Matt Bryant? I think they do. He's not bad.

Danny (Charlotte NC)

What Position will the panther draft with the there 2 Rd pick ??

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

WR is my guess at the moment.

robertussen (chucktown sc)

with the off field problems with babs and the suspention that will surely follow, do you see a big need at dt for the falcons even with peria jerry returning from injury

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Yep, keep an eye on Penn State kid -- Jared Odrick.

Adrian (GA)

Hey Pat Can Matt Ryan Roddy White And Michael Turner be The new Tripplets in the near future if only for a couple years

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Possible.

ac (orlando)

alx brown not an option for tampa bay?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

From what I've heard, no.

Freeman (Pittsburgh)

Hey Pat. Do you think the bucs would consider Alex Brown considering he is already familiar with the system?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Do I think they should get him? Yes. Do I think it will happen? No.

Joshua (Charlotte, NC)

Hey Pat, love the blog, my question is what do you think the Panthers main priority is in the draft? I thought DT, but now that Steve Smith is speaking up asking for help I believe we need a WR more now.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

WR would be my top pick. Question is are you going to get a sure thing in the second round? Could easily see them going DT.

Brock (Boulder)

The teams should give their fans one consensus free agency pick-up in the off-season. Give us some ownership and a chance to see how good/bad our decision making is...

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Yeah, but my guess is the move the fans would make would be to re-sign Derrick Brooks or Mike Alstott.

Dave (Columbus)

So does Fox really save for the compensatory picks next year, since he might not be there?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

That's not Fox's call. That's up to g.m. Marty Hurney and he's always looking ahead.

Brandon (Lafayette,La)

What are the chances the saints give Alex Brown a serious look now that he's been released and defensive end being a need area?I believe this could give them better options in the draft maybe even pick up one of the hybrid de/olb like TCU's Jerry Hughes to improve the pass rush and fill the hole at olb as well .What's your opinion?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Yes, not saying this will happen or is happening yet. But I would keep a close eye on this one.

Aaron (Nashville, TN)

I've heard some talk about the Bucs being thin/weak at LB, and I don't think I buy it. Ruud was a compiler of tackles last year and didn't make a lot of plays, but Geno Hayes (who is still 22) came on with 3 sacks, 2 INTs, and a forced fumble in the last 4 games. Do you see Hayes as a future star? Do you see Ruud/Hayes as a good combo for years to come?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

I'd say LB is one of the Bucs' lesser worries right now.

Scott (Cocoa Beach, FL)

Pat, sounds like Josh Freeman has been working hard this off season and spending all his time at One Buc. Any insight on how he's looking?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Everybody out there seems thrilled with everything he's doing. At least there's one bright spot in Tampa Bay.

Brock (Boulder)

Falcons look for a receiver in the late rounds to build some depth?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Could happen. They've got high hopes for Douglas, but sometimes it takes two years for a guy to really get over a knee injury like that and Finneran is old.

Phil (GA)

Will Atlanta only pick defensive players in the draft or use some picks for offense too?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

No, think it will be fairly balanced this year.

Corey (Greenville, NC)

yo pat, do you think the panthers go for 2 WR's in the draft? like one early and one late?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

entirely possible.

Kewnt (Melbourne,Fl.)

If Tampa Bay picks Suh or McCoy with first pick, do they go WR,DE, or CB with 2 picks in second round.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

I'd say WR and DE.

Joshua (Charlotte, NC)

Any word on Thomas Davis and his ACL injury? He was really turning it on before the injury; looked as good as he ever has.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Sounds like his rehab is going well. He really was blossoming last year.

Ken (Gulfport, Ms)

Pat what do you think about the Sharper situation in New Orleans?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Think both sides are playing he waiting game. Might not happen until after the draft.

Scott (Fayetville)

Is Dwayen Jarrett a bust or can we hope he steps his game up this season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

You never know, but I haven't seen anything yet that leads me to believe he can be the answer.

Aaron (Nashville, TN)

If you were to GUESS, which of the Bucs' seemingly pedestrian wide receivers has the best chance to surprise folks by putting up big numbers this year: Stovall, Stroughter, Reggie Brown, Mike Clayton

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Do I really have to? All right, I'll rule out Clayton and Stovall right off. Stroughter, I think, can be a nice slot guy. That leaves Brown as the best bet and I'm not saying he's gonna put up 1,000 yards.

Tim (Athens)

Do you think this will be Barber's fairwell year in the NFL?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

That would be my guess.

Tim (Athens)

The Bucs were intereseted in Charles Grant a few years ago when he was franchised by NO. Any chance they might sign him after the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

What has Grant done recently to excite you? If they come out of the draft without real help at DE, then maybe. But Grant's not the kind of guy that's going to come out and do anything big.

Aaron ((Dade City))

I believe the Bucs should seriously look into signing Alex Brown because I think he's got a few more good years left in him, also they wouldn't have to waste a draft pick this year with questions of the rookie would even make the team. Also Alex Brown former Gator, i'm sure he would love to come back to Florida

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Agree with you. But, right now, I haven't heard anything solid that they are even interested.

Lauren (London)

You said the Falcons will add the offensive side of the ball in the draft, what areas need cover?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

Depth on o-line, RB and WR. Not major needs. They don't need starters on offense, but they need to start looking ahead in some spots.

Brice (Houma, La)

What will the Saints do about the back up QB spot? Do you see Sean Payton drafting one?..or just pick up a journeyman like Brunell after the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

There will be lots of vets, including Brunell, out there after the draft.

Ian (WHO DAT NATION, LA)

WHY oh WHY would the Saints bring in Jamaal Lewis for a visit? We do already have a good 3rd running back in Lyonell Hamilton who can get the short yardage needed on 3rd and 4th downs.. If anything they should sign Fargas over Lewis.. he is a better pass blocker. Thoughts??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

I'm with you. Think they might have been just kicking tires on the Lewis visit.

andrew (atlanta)

so the falcons added one player (albeit a good one) to their secondary from free agency and all the sudden no one's worried about the secondary? do you think people are moving on from this issue a bit too quickly?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

No, they also re-signed Brian Williams, who was their best CB until he got hurt last year. They've also got S William Moore coming back from injury. Throw in Robinson and you've got three new starters and DeCoud played well at safety last year. Also, they now have good depth in Tampa.

Ben (Tampa)

Pat; please clarify on your prior blog this week. You said there is speculation of the Bucs to London? Are you kidding me? of all people you should see this as pure junk. Please let me knwo who is speculating this?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Go back and look at the link on the blog. Can't remember who the link was two, but they were the ones doing the speculating. I don't see it happening. If there's going to be any franchise movement, it might be the team in north Florida. Despite Bucs recent struggles, NFL sees Tampa as a good market and great Super Bowl venue.

Tyler (Winterville, NC)

do you think the panthers would be hesitant to draft WR damian williams out of USC in the 2nd round given there recent failures with USC WR's? he will likely be the best available WR when the panthers pick in the 2nd round.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Given their history with 2nd round receivers from USC, I'd stay clear of him. Maybe get a WR from somewhere else.

Francis (Brooklyn, NY)

Do you think the Falcons will push the ball more vertical this year than they have in the past?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

I truly hope so. They've got to play to Ryan's strengths.

Richard (Columbia, SC)

Hey Pat, do you think the Panthers will give Jordan Shipely a close look? I think he might be a good fit...whats your take?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Yep, I like him. Also think Tampa Bay will look at him. Know Josh Freeman is a big Shipley fan.

james (FL)

Pat big fan here but have a golf tourney so gotta be quick, last year the panthers liked corey irvin's potential, what do they think of him now even though he was injured, also how do you see the Panthers addressing their DT situation, draft of FA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Still a guy with potential, but don't think he's ready to explode.

nitey (Tampa, FL)

Pat, just saw that Ken Hamlin and Fonzell Adams were released by the Cowboys. Any chance either of them will end up in the South? If so where is your best guess? Both are ex-Pro Bowlers I think.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Don't think anybody needs an expensive LT. But Hamlin, I think he could make some sense just about anywhere in NFC South.

Ryan (Columbia, SC)

What do you think the Panthers will do with their lack of defensive tackles?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

Think they'll add to that in draft.

Marty Hurney [via mobile]

I'm drafting Tebow weather by moving up or he falls to us. This is mine n Foxeys last shot

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

Yep and how exactly would Tebow save your jobs???

Scott (Cocoa Beach, FL)

If both Suh and McCoy are gone when the Bucs pick at 3, what would be of more importance to you: Surrounding Freeman with offensive talent or addressing the D Line?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Very tough call. I think they're just hoping they can get one of the DTs.

Jeffrey T (Boone, NC)

What are the chances of you getting another Alex Brown question?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Haha. Good one.

Blue (ANDERSON)

Any chance Panthers use de Angelo in the slot some this year to keep their best playmakers on the field?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

I wouldn't mind seeing a little of that. But not sure how Fox feels about it.

Harvey (FL)

Is Carolina seriously looking at Colt McCoy and Tebow? Both will most likely go at the latest 2nd round...surely the Panthers will make more of their 2 RD pick and go for WR, Right??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

WR, DT or DE would be my guess. Neither of those QBs would provide any immediate help.

Cody (New Jersey)

Pat, why in the world are the bucs not going after brandon marshall? it seems that they would only have to give up one of their second rounders which they would prolly use on a WR anyway. why risk getting another dexter jackson when we could get one of the best receivers in the league? freeman needs some help

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Not saying I agree with this, but think Bucs are scare off by the baggage that comes with Marshall.

George (Chicago (IL))

Do you think the saints are gonna move on jamaal lewis?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Nah.

Barrett Ruud [via mobile]

Can I have that extension

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Better wait until after the season and you better have big season. Think Bucs are content to let you play for the tender.

Ian (WHO DAT NATION, LA)

I was listening to Deek(sp?) and The Cajun Cannon yesterday on the radio and they were talking about a guy who ran a 3.9 in a 40 yd dash and he is like 6'7? Have you heard anything about this guy and are any teams interested in him from the NFC South?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Not sure who you're talking about. But, keep in mind, yesterday was April Fools day.

Scott (Cocoa Beach, FL)

If Suh and McCoy are gone, any market for trading back with someone enamoured with Bradford?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

That would be a best-case scenario. Could happen.

Mo (Denver)

Which NFC team do you see most likely picking up Jordan Shipley out of texas in the upcoming draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Bucs. Josh Freeman's been singing his praises all offseason.

Ryan (Columbia, SC)

I think Jarret and Moore showed some flashes towards the end of the season. Do you think they can build off that success and save Jarrets career?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

If it happens, great. But don't get your hopes too high on Jarrett.

marcua (Wilmington, DE)

Pat, Could ATL trade Jamaal Anderson and/or cash for soon-to-be disgruntled (and considering waving his no-trade clause) DE Andre Carter (WSH) to get some cheap help on DE. Wash. Post reports Carter is only owed 4.5 mil this year, 1/3 of which is base salary, remaining portion is summertime roster bonus. Carter + Abraham give vets at DE to help school young DEs Bierman and Sidbury for 1-2 more seasons.Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, but what makes you think the Redskins -- or anybody -- would want Anderson?

Harvey (FL)

Have you heard anything that Richard Marshall is getting any action in FA? Will he most likely sign his tender and end up back in Carolina next year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

To this point, I haven't heard of any real strong interest. Deadline to sign RFAs is fast approaching. My guess is he stays where he's at.

pat yasinkas Jr [via mobile]

My dads a true Miami Hurricane fan!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Yeah, how'd the Canes make out in that national title game with Penn State? Wasn't that Miami team supposed to be the best college football team ever?

Dan Connor [via mobile]

I wanna start patsi

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

Good for you. I hope you do.

Josh Freeman (Tampa)

I would like to have Shipley on my team. Think he can help me out as well as the team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Better than what you've got.

Aaron ((Dade City) FL)

Are the Bucs wanting for Angelo Crowell to start or are they just wanting depth at sam lb. After they signed him last week

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Just depth.

Bert (Irvine CA )

Pat, Hated seeing Hoover being let go, but the comments he made about the Panthers setting themselves up for failure leaves a dark cloud over my comfort zone. Is there truth behind those words or just a little bitter venting?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

It was one small comment. He's an athlete with pride and things like that will happen. Besides, he might have had a good point.

Ryan (Charleston, SC)

Apparently Reggie Bush is being traded to Seattle for the 14th pick in this year's draft and DE Lawrence Jackson. Your thoughts, Pat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

To my knowledge, I think that was an April Fools joke. But I wouldn't totally rule that out at some point. He could be a decent slot guy.

Ken (Gulfport, Ms)

Pat who do you think the Saints will keep Bushrod or Brown?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Think they both stay.

mike (california)

with the depth at linebacker in this years draft, do you think that would lead the falcons to lean toward DE in the first round?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Could, if there's a qulaity DE available.

Hawk (West Virginia)

Hey about that 6'7 WR with the 3.9 40 was a April Fools day thing. He was suppose to be from Mesa JC and only played on game last year and had 7 red for 142yds. Said he tagged on for a pro day and ran that and is now considered a top 10 pick. Many things in the article would never happen but even at the end it said Gotcha!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Thanks, sounded to good to be true.

Cody (New Jersey)

how come the bucs went after a guy with a lot of baggage last year but not this year? kellen winslow had huge problems coming in last year and he turned out to be possibly our most productive player of the year. i really do think the same thing can happen with brandon marshall if he bring him in. only reason he is unhappy now is because denver wont pay him, and the bucs have the money to pay him

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Tell that to Raheem and Dominik.

Shawn (KS)

With the possible " Lock Out" looming next year , Who's going to pay the mortgage at Raymond James?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Not sure of specifics, but don't the taxpayers do that?

Neil (Besancon, France)

hey pat, been having troubles making your chats from overseas with the whole time change n such, but can you tell me if J.Babs legal troubles last season are going to have any effects on this season? bc it seems like whenever people talk about the falcons d they conviently forget to mention Babs and hes a beast in the middle

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Not sure if there will be any carry-over from the legal situation. If there is, I think it will be rather minimal. That aside, Babs is a very solid DT, but sometimes flies under radar because of the nature of his position.

Kris (GA)

What are the chances there is no Football in 2011? i really hope there isnt a lock out...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

It's a real possibility. Hope it doesn't come to that, but, right now, it looks possible.

Joe Antartica [via mobile]

Its colder than sh*t down here

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

It's sunny and about 80 in Florida.

Bob (cedar rapids IA)

Do you see a larger than normal amount of trades after day one of the draft?GM will have all night to pannic because they didn't get the guy they wanted in RD1 orwill it be business as usual with normal amount of trade action?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Could be. That's one of the things I'm interested to see in the new draft format.

Josh (Denver nc)

Is John Fox a players coach because I have heard many players talk about how they only came to the Panthers because of him. Does he take it easy on the players during practice or what?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

No, not anything like that. Just that he talks to the players and treats them like human beings.

Richard (Ann Arbor)

On "Best Athlete", I have to give a shout-out to Jonathan Vilma. Among the most athletic MLB's in the league.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

I'd put him in the top five athletes in NFC South. Think Beason would have to go there too. All right, we're out of time. Thanks to all for stopping by. Have a great Easter.
