Nothing like chatting on a Wednesday when there is a live UFC show!!! MMA Live analyst Kenny Florian in the main event tonite against Takanori Gomi. Would like to hear your thoughts on that fight and we'll also look back at UFC 111. Gotta get out at 2PM ET today for a fantasy baseball draft, so let's get this thing going.
Hey man. Huge fan of your show and chats. You always say GSP is focused on his welterweight legacy and that's why he won't move up. But isn't he already the best 170-pounder of all-time? What else does he need to do?
Thanks, Jack. I do think, on the heels of another dominant performance, that Georges St. Pierre is the best welterweight of all-time. And I would like to see him move up to 185 sooner rather than later. Only guy at 170 who I'm intrigued to see him fight is Paulo Thiago.
Jon, how hard will it be for Mir to get back in the hunt? His drawing power should make it much easier if he rattles off a couple big wins right?
I think Frank will be okay. The Carwin matchup was a bad one for him, but Mir will be back. He's still relatively young. Just needs a quality win or two to get back in the title picture. There's no one better at selling a fight, and that doesn't hurt his cause.
Jon, how impressed were you with Carwin's performance? Do you see him beating Lesnar?
Couldn't have gone any better for Shane Carwin. He really needed a W against an elite heavyweight and the fact that he finished Mir so quickly is huge. If Brock Lesnar is 100% when he returns in July, I still like him to win the fight. But Carwin's power is absolutely elite and I expect him to test Brock's chin.
You don't care to see GSP vs. Shields or Diaz?
Sure, but neither one of them is in the UFC right now. Both could feasibly be there by this time next year, and that would add some contenders into the mix immediately.
Is there a MMA Live Pick em for tonight's fights? I haven't seen one.
No there isn't. But the support and participation from MMA fans was great, as usual. I expect MMA Live Pick 'Em to return for UFC 112. Make your voice heard (firstname.lastname@example.org) and tell them you want the game for all UFC PPVs and major shows!
Predictions for tonight? Mine are Florian, Nelson, Quarry, Pearson.
I am right there with you. I like all of the favorites to hold serve tonite. Pearson-Siver has the potential to be electric. I think Florian-Gomi fight will be pretty technical.
So Jon, address the speculation....MMA Live to ESPN2??!?!?!?!?!?
Yes, it is true! After two years (next week will be our 100th episode), we will be given a shot on ESPN2 in May. It's a hugely exciting time for all of us associated with MMA Live. I am thrilled for the opportunity, and hope the MMA community will step up and show its support. First show will be Thurs. May 6th at 1 AM ET/10 PM PT (Friday AM on the East coast). And we will also do a one-hour preview special live from Montreal for UFC 113. Can't thank you all enough for making your voices heard and helping us along the way!
so when is mma live going to be on t.v.? :)
Thursday May 6th is our debut.
Thoughts on Palhares holding on three seconds after the tap? I hate when people compare it what Royce did in the early stages of UFC....what Palhares did was far worse. You?
My girlfriend was outraged. I didn't think it was as bad as she did. I don't believe Palhares was trying to injure his opponent. Did he hold on too long? Absolutely. But it's a fine line. You have to be certain the guy isn't just offering up a phantom tap. If the ref doesn't see the tap, you might allow an opponent to recover.
Dana White proclaiming that Hardy is a future champion if he can develop takedown D is like saying Arlovski could beat Fedor if he could get a better chin. Hardy will get eaten alive by elite wrestlers like Kos, Fitch and strikers like Alves. Thoughts?
I was impressed with Hardy's toughness, but disappointed overall that he wasn't able to get anything done. I would like to see how he fares against those other guys. But you're right, takedown defense is a glaring weakness right now. It's the only thing he should've been working on for the GSP fight. Forget jiu-jitsu and striking. If you can't stop the takedown, the fight's over.
I am not very familiar with Gomi, but I have seen some interviews saying he wants to avenge his loss to BJ Penn... How high in the lightweight division is this guy so soon?
His past success buys him a lot of good will witht he UFC. A win over Kenny Florian could feasibly get him an immediate title shot. That said, I think tonight could be a cold, hard reality check. But a Penn-Gomi rematch is definitely an intriguing fight for the UFC, much more so than, say, Penn-Maynard.
YES! I will be tuning in May 6th! Anik is about to hit my 42 inch flatscreen. haha
That may be the only drawback. The Chost in HD!
That's funny on the Palhares question. I went through the exact same thing with my gf watching the fight.
I think she's still upset about it...
KOS should get the tittle shot over Fitch his last win was way more impressive than Fitch on saturday
It was nice to see Fitch at least go hard for the finish late, but you're right. He's just not doing enough to impress the people who matter. There is no questioning his talent, but you've got to create some seminal moments. And the majority of his fights, while convincing, are, as Simon Cowell would say, forgettable.
While I do not deny that GSP is the best welterweight fighter possible ever, I also contend he is one of the most boring and most predictable fighters in MMA. Your thoughts
I was entertained at UFC 100 when he took down Thiago Alves at will. But for whatever reason, I was bored stiff Saturday night. Just thought the fight was very anti-climactic. And, b/c GSP only fights twice a year, I think the fans need more of a show. I really hope we see Georges get back in there soon, but that's not my expectation.
Fashionably late to the party, but here nonetheless. Who is your pick to take TUF 11?
That's a tough question. With three UFC shows in 10 days, I've barely looked at the TUF 11 roster. I'll go with Nick Ring, one of the few guys I know something about, as a dark horse.
What are your thoughts on GSP possibly coaching TUF 12 opposite the Daley/Koscheck winner?
It makes some sense, but that means GSP doesn't fight again until December. That's not what I'm looking for. I want champions to fight three times/calendar year and, barring injury, I don't think that is too much to ask.
Any SOLID info on who Liddell will be fighting at the end of TUF??
This story is very fluid and there's a lot of misinformation out there. I really don't expect him to fight Randy Couture, despite the reports. Just don't think that fight has any value for Couture right now. Of course, other than his great per-fight base salary...
What is the injury status of Palhares opponent?
I read that it was just a sprain and nothing is torn.
I love watching Big Counrty fight, but theres no way he could hang with the heavyweight elites like Brock, Cain, or Carwin. Your thoughts?
I think that question will be more clearly answered after tonight. Stefan Struve, at 6'11" is an interesting challenge for anyone, and I look forward to seeing how Roy Nelson handles it. Big Country has hung with elites in the past (Andrei Arlovski comes to mind) and, although I wouldn't favor him to beat the guys you mention, I think you're underestimating him a little bit.
Is a 90-day suspension really of note? These UFC guys rarely fight twice in 90-days anyway.
You're right. I think a fine might've been more appropriate.
Can we put a stop to the GSP is boring/he doesn't finish fights talk? (According to CompuStrike) GSP attempted 8 submissions against Hardy. Hardy has not been finished since '05, Alves since '06 and Fitch since '02 they were on a combined 38-2 streak heading into their fights with GSP. How about something being said for the level of competition he has faced?
GSP's athleticism is off the charts, and the way he keeps making #1 contenders look pedestrian is pretty unbelievable. But that performance had its flaws. There were some technique issues with the submissions, and that had as much to do with GSP not finishing the fight as it had to do with Hardy's toughness. I also think St. Pierre vowed to be more aggressive, and his ground-and-pound was anything but. Don't be afraid to throw an elbow every now and again, ya know?
Was it just me or did Brock Lesnar look MASSIVE next to a supposedly equal-sized Shane Carwin? I predict Carwin is in for a rough night come July.
Massive. But someone pointed out to me that Lesnar was probably wearing cowboy boots and Carwin was barefoot. Still, Brock is just a specimen. He's even bigger in person than on TV.
If big country wins, how about Nelson-Dos Santos?
I think that's absolutely a possibility. I'm very curious to see how the UFC proceeds with Big Country, provided he gets through Struve tonite.
Any idea how to watch the prelims tonight? Pretty interested in what Jason High can do in the UFC.
I'm not sure, Jarric. I usually try to avoid results and hope one of the prelims finds its way onto the broadcast.
people always tell me i look bigger in person too.
Hahaha. I get the opposite.
Congrats on the move to TV Jon! Very well deserved. When your boy Kenny methodically takes out Gomi tonight, where does he go? About the only person I can think of him taking on is Tyson Griffin.
Thanks, Erik. Appreciate your loyalty in the chats man. The two guys I'd like to see Florian fight are Tyson Griffin and Frank Edgar.
And Frankie Edgar will be on MMA Live tomorrow, before he leaves for Abu Dhabi.
Have you tried PX90? ESPN Radio guys claim it works.... but does it *really* work?
Gottlieb swears by it. My apartment is not conducive to it, but I am intrigued and will put myself through it at some point.
What's up with the Diaz brothers doing better when they move up in weight class?
Nate looked good, but Markham looked really bad. I wouldn't read too much into that performance. I'll be able to form a better opinion after his next welterweight scrum.
Isn't it funny how the supposedly 6'5 Carwin was at least 1-2 inches shorter than the 6'2/6'3 Mir?
Yeah, Carwin looks to me to be about 6'1". But that frame packs and delivers some serious power.
JA, I believe that Carwin is finally going to be able to test Lesnar's chin. I honestly believe that this matchup is as close to a pick'em as we've seen at heavyweight. what say you?
Well, the Vegas oddsmakers don't agree. Lesnar has opened as a 2-1 favorite, but that is to be expected. I think Carwin has a good a chance as any current UFC heavyweight to give Brock a run for the belt. Looking forward to July 3rd, and not because it's my birthday.
Speaking of birthdays, Happy Birthday, Molly Qerim!
can't wait for Ross Pearson to shine tonight!
I'm hoping we get a repeat performance of UFC 105, when he bludgeoned Aaron Riley. I think Pearson is gonna make huge strides in 2010.
UFC should dangle GSP in front of Vancouver and say "if you get UFC 115 done, we'll give you GSP vs Paulo Thiago." how can vancouver say no to that?
That's not a bad idea. But I doubt GSP would be willing to turn around and fight in June. That dude takes his time. I think he may have actually overtrained for UFC 111.
What do you see next for Cheik Kongo? Does a match with JDS make sense to you?
I think that fight makes some sense, and perhaps it's a calculated risk for the UFC. They just need to preserve Dos Santos as a contender, so a loss would be crippling. And I don't think he loses to Kongo, so that fight may have some legs.
I think everyone has a weak chin against Shane Carwin.
That's probably accurate. I think Lesnar's chin is good and he will certainly get a chance to prove it on July 3.
What did you make of Dana calling Fitch out about fighting Koscheck if he really wants a title fight?
I understand why teammates are reluctant to fight each other. But at some point, Dana needs to intervene. And I think this was the perfect time for White to do so. Both Koscheck and Fitch are clearly on the cusp of title shots, and if they are on a collision course as contenders, they may have to suck it up and fight. I think this line will continue to blur as MMA moves forward.
Would Kenny Florian fight Kurt Pellegrino? I doubt it, but both are on the rise right now, and that fight could make sense at some point.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but Daley was not ready for a title shot. I would have rather just had Koscheck fight GSP again.
Well, if Daley gets through Koscheck in May, his case will be a lot stronger. And that's a distinct possibility.
Any word on Kimbo's next fight?
He will fight Matt Mitrione at UFC 113, May 8th in Montreal. MMA Live preview show that night at 9ET on ESPN2!
Just wanted to pass along that a buddy of mine Tyler Lee has been offered the fight with Bobby Lashley on April 17th. He has signed and accepted the fight and would be a big challenge for Lashley since he is a wrestler and is 265 plus!
Great stuff, Dustin. Thanks for sharing it in the chat. Best of luck to your boy.
Your boy Hector Lombard is facing Paulo Filho in May, Filho is a borderline top ten MW according to most sites, you excited for the matchup?
I am definitely jacked for that fight, and it's a risk for Lombard. Good stylistic clash, and I do think it qualifies as a 'superfight' for Bellator. You can be sure CEO Bjorn Rebney will have his fingers crossed that the champ gets through Filho.
How much it cost to have arm stuff and mounted?
Hahahahahahahaha. Best fighter nickname of all time is 'The Arm Collector'. Not sure whose it is, but I love it.
Who is more likely to lose at 112: BJ or Anderson?
What's up Jon, do you know when Cole Konrad or Dustin Hazelette fight again?
Not sure on Dustin Hazelett. Perhaps someone in the chat room has an update. As for Cole Konrad, I expect he will be featured on one of the first 3-5 Bellator shows against an opponent to be determined.
Jon, do you frequent sherdog or the UG?
People are always bugging me to get in the Underground forum, but I've yet to take the plunge. I am on Sherdog.com all the time. Not sure I could do the show without the Fight Finder.
With MMA Live going on TV, do you think they'll send you to more PPVs now?
I am hoping that is the case. We will be at UFC 113, UFC 114, and UFC 116.
Just booked my tickets and flight to be at the UFC fan expo! What do I need to see? You gonna be at the fights?
We will be there! Be sure to stop by the MMA Live booth at the Expo and introduce yourself.
sorry to break up the ufc talk, but I'm most looking forward to strikeforce's cbs card. Henderson, Mousasi, Aoki (not to mention their title worthy oppenents) is a sick card, Lashely will be fun to watch to
I share your enthusiasm for the card on April 17th. This is what Strikeforce does. They stack the deck a few times a year, and then disappear. Does anyone know when Tyron Woodley is gonna fight again? He hasn't fought since November. He should fight Joe Riggs yesterday.
You think that frankie has a better chance than the submission magician?
Yes I do. Our MMA Live coordinating producer persuaded me this morning. Edgar will be on the show tomorrow. He's a great interview.
Snapple Cap has been out of this chat for months. Let's bring that hog back.
If Shields loses to Hendo, is it a lock the UFC will pick him up?
I think it's a lock, win or lose.
How did Nate Diaz look at welterwight against Rory Markham on Saturday? My T.V. messed up and I didn't get to see the fight...
As dominant as he could possibly look. Stand-up looked sharp, and he sensed blood in the water and went for the kill. A nice showcase for Nate, but Markham looked listless...almost as if he didn't want to be there.
I know we are in the MMA chat, but give us your Final Four predicition!
I like Butler and Duke. And I think the Devils cut down the nets. Rooting for a Butler-West Virginia final, and would love to see Butler as national champions. What a story that would be.
Boxing always had great chroniclers. Who are some of your favorite writers covering MMA right now?
Tons to choose from. I've learned a lot from Franklin McNeil and Kevin Iole during my time covering boxing. Jake Rossen, our ESPN.com MMA blogger, is a brilliant guy and I agree with 95% of what he writes. This may not sound objective, but Sherdog is littered with talented writers. I read Tomas Rios' fight previews every card. The man has a way with words.
Anik, Carwin is making everyone he touches a done-dada..yet I still feel like you don't think he can beat brock just like you thought he couldn't beat Mir. Did he bully you as a kid or something?
Hahahahaha. I will never (rarely) pick against one of our MMA Live analysts. Carwin took the naysayer out of me this weekend, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he beat Lesnar. I still think Brock will win, but I don't expect it to be easy. At all.
Jon, big here at the United States Naval Academy. After I attended UFC 111 and witnessed GSP destroy Hardy in every facet of the fight, is there any fresh challenges left for GSP at 170lbs? His recent training and mass gain indicate a possible move to 185lbs, no?
Thanks, Patrick. Good to hear from you, and thanks for all you do on our behalf. I agree with your assessment on UFC 111. If GSP wants to go down as the best P4P fighter of all time, it's time to prove that by moving up in weight. I think his success will translate, but the challenge will be greater. And I would think St. Pierre is ready for that challenge. That said, he doesn't appear inclined to make the move.
Tougher opponent for Brock, Cain or Carwin?
Pick your poison. I will say Carwin, a) because his performance is fresh on my brain stem and b) because his power seems to be the purest of any UFC heavyweight. Honorable mention, Dos Santos, Junior.
Which division in the UFC do you think can put on the most exciting fights right now?
Heavyweight! It's nice to answer that question that way. When we started MMA Live in May of 2008, the heavyweight division was on life support. Now, it's overflowing with prospects, contenders, and intriguing matchups.
Rios is great, and agree on Rossen! But as far as colorful writers, check out Ben Fowlkes and Chuck Mindenhall who do a lot of magazine work. Really good stuff! Love the chat.
Is it just me, or does GSP lack a lot of power in his hands? He hit Hardy with good shots, and Hardy just stuc his tongue out at him.
Perhaps. I just think St. Pierre is a little bit reluctant to throw punches in bunches. And part of that is a by-product of his superior wrestling. Ya know, why engage in the stand-up when you can take a guy down with your eyes closed and with 18 beers in your system? I just thought GSP and his corner was too conservative, especially on the ground.
We know Kenny is going to win...will Tibau make it 0-2 for the Japanese guys by beating Uno?
I think Tibau fidns a way to get it done. Huge strength advantage over Uno in this one.
Jon,Whats with all the GSP hating...Is it because you are mad because you picked him to lose.
Hahaha. I am really trying to be diplomatic on GSP. I rushed (no pun intended) to his defense after UFC 100. I just wasn't enamored with this performance. Still remain mesmerized by his pace and athleticism. I was exhausted watching that fight.
More interesting matchup - GSP/Silva or Silva/Fedor? Fedor doesn't cut weight and comes in around 230. I hear Silva walks around at 220...
For me, it's still GSP-Silva. You're right that Anderson Silva is known to walk around north of 215.
Jones Bhop prediction
Bernard Hopkins by unanimous decision. Hopefully B-Hops goes for the finish and gets it.
Hardy vs. GSP with 18 beers in his system...who you got?
Hardy. But GSP with 12 beers down could still get it done.
Your assesment on Fedor against the likes of Junior Dos Santos Cain and Shane Carwin now that weve seen "most of the light" on these guys...I just dont see Fedor beating these 3....
I would just love to see him fight any of those guys. I think he'd be favored to beat most of the UFC heavyweights. But as I've said consistently since Fedor signed with Strikeforce, part of his reasoning for choosing SF had to have been a reluctance to face all of the rising UFC talent.
Fedors last 3 wins were against guys that were all top-10 ranked at the time (Rogers, Arlovski, Sylvia) and he FINISHED all 3. Can we please stop doubting the guy
I agree, Harold. I am a huge fan of Brett Rogers, and I still consider him a Top 10 heavyweight in the world. But now, he's fighting Fabricio Werdum. To me, that's a waste of time.
Are you totally stoked about the new TUF starting tonight?
More excited about the UFC Fight Night card that leads into it. But I guess I'm ready for a new season of TUF.
rogers would beat him if they were to fight again
Wouldn't surprise me in the least. He got a lot of things done in that first fight.
Giva "The Arm Collector" Santana
Thanks, Robert. I knew someone would eventually come through with that.
your thoughts on Couture Jr. turning pro?
Go get it. He's gonna have a lot of eyes on his every move because his Dad is Randy Couture. Provided that doesn't get to him, he'll be successful. Crazy way for his amateur career to end, though. For those that don't know, he was choked unconscious at the end of a round and was ultimately allowed to continue.
I know Hardy is getting a lot of credit for his toughness and heart, but when does that become a problem? He gets his arm broken, does it really matter how much heart he has? There's a difference between having heart and being stubborn.
I'm not sure GSP really locked in the armbar the way he should have, so maybe Hardy isn't as tough as we all think. I don't know. I'm just waiting to see some welterweight, ANY welterweight, thwart one single GSP takedown. It's amazing how useless everyone looks against St. Pierre.
How far are we from Frank Mir vs Kimbo Slice...haha
Far. I can't believe Kimbo is favored to beat Matt Mitrione.
With the very bad beating Frank Mir took this past weekend, what do you see as the next fight for Mir? Will we ever see Mir vs. Lesnar III?
I wouldn't close the book on Lesnar-Mir III just yet. If Brock loses to Carwin, that fight could even happen in 2010. I'd like to see Mir fight Big Country actually.
I think that Overeem is the most dangerous HW in the world. He would give anyone fits.
He gets a chance to prove himself on May 15th. I kinda think Brett Rogers is gonna take his belt. Overeem remains a dangerous fighter. Just not sure he's the 'most' dangerous HW in the world.
Mir vs Velasquez would be the next logical match in the hw division.I think Dos Santos is a step closer than Velasquez for the title after the Lesnar vs Carwin fight.
I think the UFC disagrees. They see Velasquez as being ready for the title shot right now. I think they will hold Cain out of action and let him face the Lesnar-Carwin winner.
JA, I guess you finally wore the suits down and got on TV. Does this mean more radio interviews as well?
I'm hoping so, Andrew. I was on ESPN2's Sports Nation w/ Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd on Friday. Hopefully it's a sign of more to come.
Dana White doesnt want JDS fighting for the strap.
At least not yet, anyway.
JA, Congrats on getting on the Deuce (FINALLY). What's next for GSP now that he's pretty much cleaned out the division?
Thanks, Jarrett. I want him to move up to 185, or vacillate between the two divisions. Not sure he agrees.
Are there not a lot of annoyed Fantasy Baseball players waiting for you right now?
A perfect segue from Steven in Scotland. Must run off to a fantasy baseball draft. Thanks for joining me today. If you still have questions, send them to email@example.com or try me on Twitter (Jon_Anik). I will get back to you. See you all tomorrow on MMA Live. Until next week, enjoy Florian-Gomi tonite. Be well. And don't text and drive. -JA
