Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

The flowers are blooming and the grass needs mowing but I'd rather be with you guys for the next hour. OK, so part of me wants to be out in this beautiful weather, but there's plenty of time for that. What's on your mind?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When Danica Patrick gets a full time ride in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will she become a "whacker" by racing in about 20 Nationwide Series races also?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

It all depends on how far along she is by the time she's ready for Cup. Twenty might be a bit too high. I could see her in a handful of NW races, though.

Chris (Atlanta)

Jeff got Robbed. The White was displayed before the yellowDoes NASCAR really know how to call the race or just helping some drivers? Don't get me wrong I love GWC racing but NASCAR screw up this time!

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

I wouldn't go as far as to say robbed, but Jeff did bring up some interesting concerns. There were several incidents where the yellow didn't come out immediately or at all. Didn't Kyle Busch continue on?

Red (NC)

So does the embellishment and hypocrisy that came out of Gordon?s mouth after the race get overlooked because it?s Jeff Gordon? What if Gordon bumped the 17 in turn one, and Kenseth would have been pounding into the side of his car down the backstretch. Gordon would really be whining. I?m ok with what happened on the track, just sick of Gordon being the ultimate flip flopper.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

My view, at least with "have at it boys," is that anything's fair game at this point. I imagien the situation will be reversed before the season is over. We'll see what Jeff does.

Jon_jonis_here (Agawam, Ma)

Was the tire issue this weekend more of a product of the tire from goodyear or was it a product of camber?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

It simply was drivers over-braking and the brakes getting too hot as often is the case at Martinsville. If you looked closely at the red coming from some of the cars you could have picked which ones were going to blow.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When will see Justin Allgaier race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me if Penske didn't slip him into a few races before the season's out. He did test him at Charlotte. Whether he's preparing for a fourth car or to jump in the 77 I can't say just yet.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is on the sies of Riverside Raceway & Ontario Motor Speedway Right Now?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Never thought about it to be honest. Have you googled? I'll toss it out to twitter and see if anybody knows and answer later in the chat.

Tim (AZ)

Hey David, I was just curious if anyone else finds it funny that when Gordon does a "bump and run" move, or knocks someone out of the way, it was fair racing. But, when someone does it to him, it was a cheap move or reckless blah, blah, blah. I know all drivers do that to an extent, but for Gordon being the accomplished driver he is, he sure is a gigantic hypocrite.

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Not sure there are a lot of incidents where Gordon has knocked somebody out of the way. But I do agree what happened was just hard racing.

Billy (Reno)

So Denny reminded me of someone on Monday...someone who he complains drives agressive to much.....I think he drives the 12 Penske car now. Guess it is okay when Denny drives that way but you can not put your bumper on him?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Thanks for the comments Brad... I mean Billy.

Tracy (CT)

What is with Jr's pit crew?? I know Jr's not the greatest driver out there but they seem to always lose him spots when he comes in to pit!

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

What are you specifically talking about. I know once Junior parked too close to the pit wall to cause a problem.

Tracy (CT)

Can anyone beat the UConn women??? I think not!!!!!!!!

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

The Duke men. Maybe.

casey m (il)

hey daivd i think jeff gordan got srewed out of the race at martensville and kenth is going to pay if thats the same sutiation at phoenix if kenth is in the lead

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Don't you think Gordon paid Kenseth back enough by knocking him out of a top finish at Martinsville?

Branden (Pittsburgh)

It is officially panic time for us Montoya fans. At this point the chase is looking like a long shot, and I can sense frustration from Montoya. Do you think Brian Pattie will be able to keep him motivated or do you think he will mentally check out for the year?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

I agree it's panic time. But probably the best thing Juan can do is click off top 10s like he did last season. To get frustrated and aggressive and go for wins could make things worse.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

This just in from Twitter. Ontario has houses, buisinesses and an arena. Riverside has shopping mall, houses and a Lowe's. Thanks to Rhyno_21.

Nicholas Rolando (Orlando)

David, did you guys play basketball? In all seriousness when do you think the first Ford win is? I'm thinking Texas.

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Hoops was canceled when we lost a few bodies. I went to the Y and worked out, and still have plenty of yard work to do. As for the first Ford win, Texas is a good bet. If not maybe Dover.

TG (PA)

Dave, on Jimmy Spencer's show he said Junior can't win a race because he isn't positive and gives up if he gets back in traffic at the race. Do you agree with him?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Not entirely, but I do believe attitude behind the wheel has something to do with it.

Jake Albert (Birmingham)

Martin Truex quietly finished in the top 5 at one of his toughest tracks last weekend, and if not for a blown engine at Fontana and an unfortunate wreck during the G-W-C finish at Atlanta, the 56 team would be in the top 6 or 7 in points. Do you think this NAPA team will be major chase contenders their first year together?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Martin made the Chase a few years ago, has a Nationwide title to his credit, so he has the talent. Appears he has the equipment as well. Yes, I think he can be a Chase contender.

RAYGORDONREID ( MOMTGOMERYALA 36117)

QUESTIONTO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHAT HAPPPEN WITH IRL RICHMOND

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Danica finishes 8-10.

Frank (Coram, NY)

Hey David! Ok what is your thought on Ford's call on coming in at that late in the race? I know it worked out but if it wasn't for the late yellow I think it was too risky!

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

It was damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they didn't pit and the guy in third did then I am betting four fresh tires would have beaten four old ones.

lynn (virginia)

why can't the trucks run more races, huge truck fan

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

They are exciting. Almost wish they'd do away with the Nationwide Series and run more Trucks.

bob (yim)

hi

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Hey.

Katie (Miami)

Is the #42 team going to have to points race or take big risks to get out of their points hole?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

As i said earlier, point racing is the only way they'll get back in contention.

Ben (Concord)

Do you think Jeffrey Earnhardt will get to race any this year?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

They wanted to run him a lot. Just no luck in selling sponsorship to do it. Shows how tough things are when an Earnhardt can't get sponsorship.

Rick (Philly)

David - Hamlin talks like he is entitled to the championship and that he is the best. I went back and looked at his numbers and not counting his 7 races prior to his first full season his winning percentage is only 6%. While this is respectable it is well below many of his peers. It seems that he needs to walk the walk a bit more before he talks the talk.

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

I don't fault a driver for saying and believing they are championship caliber. And if you look at Hamlin's numbers he finished third in points as a rookie and won four of the last 11 races last season. Just saying.

zak (rochester ,mn )

david do u think kevin harvick will win at phoenix ?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Not really. But I do think he'll be in the top 10.

Frank (Coram, NY)

Was Ford's decision to take tires at the end of the race really a good move or were they just lucky?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Both. He really was between a rock and a hard place. It just worked out. Maybe he borrowed Jimmie Johnson's lucky horseshoe.

Jamerson (Georgia)

He kind of flew under the radar, but Brad Keselowski had a pretty good run Monday. 12th place for a rookie at Martinsville is nothing to sneeze at. Do you think Brad can get a win before the year is out?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

I do. Penske has its stuff together and Brad has the talent to get to Victory Lane.

longsnap (missouri)

how soon before hendrick motorsports swallows their pride and marketing campaign and drops junior? i mean, after several years, isn't his purpose now to sell hats and diecasts?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I think he'll be dropped before Charlotte. Just kidding. Junior is off to a decent start and McGrew is optimistic they will get better. And what's wrong with selling hats and diecasts?

Ed (Fort Worth)

Newt, do you think we'll continue to see tire issues? If I were a driver I would not want to have a blowout at a place like Texas. Are teams just being too aggressive with their setups?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

What we saw at Martinsville was what we see there all the time. Overheating brakes melt the beads. Goodyear is looking at a better tire for Bristol, but before that race drivers raved about the tires and how they improved racing.

crissy (maine)

whats the latest on kasey kahne, does he make the chase????

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Not looking good.

Woody (Denver)

With Kahne about to enter his typical annual surge period, do you honestly see anything keeping him at RPM...even a Championship?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Heck yeah he'd stay if he won a championship, but he doesn't look like a championship contender at the moment.

Jamerson (Georgia)

Part of the #88 team's pit road problems in Martinsville came from being pitted behind the 17 (another lead lap car). Their picks wouldn't have come that far apart since they're both top 10 in points. Why in the world did Lance and Junior pick a spot right behind a car that would obviously be lead lap when they could have picked from a bunch of other spots that didn't have anyone around them yet?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Can't answer why they picked the stall they did, but do know Lance wasn't happy with the way Junior came into the stall at least once. Should have heard those two on the radio.

Jay (Raleigh, NC)

How does nascar set the payout for prize money. A driver can come in 10th and make more then the guy in 2nd.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

The tracks set the purse, but NASCAR does pay bonuses for leading the most laps and such. I've always felt the scale was out of whack, that more needed to go to the winner to give drivers more incentive for being first.

Jamerson (Georgia)

Among the current top 12, who do you predict will fall out and who they will be replaced by? You know that Menard and Vickers will probably fall out, to be replaced by Martin and Kyle Busch. Not sure about the rest.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Menard I would agree with. Maybe even Vickers. I can't see Hamlin not making it. Same for Busch and Martin. Wait, that means three have to fall out. Too early to tell.

dz (phx, az)

hey newt? i think gordan's root of frustration is seeing the #48 win so many times. denny won by being in the right place at the right time, kinda like what the 48 team has been doing. either way i like to see more contact while watching on t.v. any thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I believe the frustration is from not winning in 35 straight races, not so much that the 48 has won. That does go to his retirement, remember.

Matt (CT)

Hi David, do you have any ideas what the "crazy" ideas regarding car set up that JJ and team tried at Martinsville?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Nothing specific. They'd won five of the last seven races there before Monday so you'd think they would have a handle on the setup. Maybe the spoiler threw it off just a dad.

TG (PA)

I just bought a copy of Espn Dale Earnhardt magazine. I love the story about Dale shooting at Junior's remote control car that had the Geoff Bodine paint scheme.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Glad you enjoyed.

Tracy (CT)

Ah, thanks, I did not know he parked to close to the wall. I wasn't paying too much attention to the middle of the race. Oh, and na, the Duke men couldn't touch the lady Huskies!!!

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

LOL on the Duke men. Might be a great way for CBS to make money. Pit the men's winner and women's winner. Kind of like NFL Super Bowl winner used to play the college guys.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Nice piece. Do you think NASCAR throws the caution if the 88 was leading Monday? Also, which track will be the best indicator of the spoiler's impact?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Tough call on the 88. As for the best track, you'll have a pretty good idea after Texas where aerodynamics will come into play for the first time.

Dee (Las Vegas)

Tires weren't the problem at Martinsville as some are saying, it was the drivers. The fact that the 7, 42, and 78 all had multiple right fronts go down is evidence of that. Also, I don't get the hate from Kenseth and Newman toward Gordon. Did they not think he would do everything to hold onto the lead at the end? So what if he wrecked Kenseth? They were all wrecking each other at that point trying to get the win.

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Agree, agree and agree.

Dale Jr (NC)

who makes the chase? the 88 or 98? or both?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Dale Jr., not Paul Menard. Nothing against Menard. Just don't think he's ready.

Cale (Boston)

How much would you need to get paid by Eddie Gossage to change your name to "TexasMotorSpeedway.com Newton"? I'd want at least $10m and ownership of NHMS.

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I'd do it for less than he offered in the early April Fools joke that apparently some bit on.

Saul (Sacramento)

THE WING! did we even notice? Any issues with the the wingless car performance?

Dee (Las Vegas)

If that horseshoe has really been where Harvick said its been, I wouldn't touch that thing! Maybe the rest of the field is so desperate to beat the 48 they'll try almost anything. I hope they sterilized it first.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Can't go there mentally, but thanks for the comment.

Rick (Philly)

Point taken on the 4 out of 11. I just believe that Denny needs to show greater consistency and maturity before he is annointed. Do you think the issues that have plagued him more about Ford, the Gibbs setup, or Hamlin's ability to give back good feedback?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

He's been more of a victim of rotten luck than anything. He easily could have been in position to challenge JJ last year had a few breaks gone his way.

Layne (Minnesota)

David, I have always wondered why the nationwide cars don't run at martinsville?...any explanation?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

NASCAR tries to spread the wealth and they choose not to spread it with Martinsville.

dan (texas)

david when is paul menard going to get some credit for his top 12 standing. slugger labbe is making paul show he can drive a race car.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I do believe Slugger has played a role in this. Also believe better equipment is making a difference. You are right. He deserves props for the good start.

Billy (Reno)

Any JGR cars make the chase? I don't see the 11 making it. The 18 seems to spead thin. I think the 20 is going to lead the JGR stable by years end.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I can't see the 11 or the 18 not making it, and Joey will be close.

Tom (Detroit)

Has anyone asked you yet if you felt they should have thrown that last caution?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Not directly. It's a tough call. Jeff's problem, and I would agree, is consistency. Just didn't seem there was any on Monday.

Chip (Wv)

Actually Gordon lost because Nascar wanted a green/white/checkered... White was already out, and Kyle got his junk together and went on... NASCAR isn't completely scripted, but they CAN, they like to write a lil bit

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

You been talking to Gordon?

Ed (Fort Worth)

Martinsville is a different animal, sure, but if I recall correctly there were tire issues at Cali and Atlanta as well. With two of the faster tracks coming up, Texas and 'Dega, I'd still be concerned.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

A few issues at Atlanta, but not because of the tire. Denny Hamlin had two issues and said one was from a cut and the other from running over something I believe. As for California I don't remember anything major there. The drivers were complimenting Goodyear before Bristol.

Teri (CA)

I'd like to see Kenseth vent his frustration back at Jeff Gordon one of these days. I'm hoping the fiesty side will come out of him.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Think Kenseth has before. I don't think this is over.

Chip (WV)

Wow... the lady huskies couldn't even beat the tar heels... totally different skill set between male/female

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Wait. The Tar Heels aren't very good right now. But I would have to agree. Not sure UConn could beat my Wofford Terriers either.

Tom (Detroit)

I felt the last caution was a Nascar gimmick. Montoya had gone around the track on one rim sparking and they didn't throw a caution. Major stuff happened all race and no cautions. Someone has a minor spin near the very end as Jeff is about to win and a caution flies??? Doesn't work for me....

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Thanks Jeff, I mean Tom. ....You made Gordon's point.

Jennifer ( South Carolina)

I do not know why Lance was unhappy with the way Jr came in the pits Sunday. Lance was the one who told him to pull in closer to the wall. This is something Jr is not accustomed to doing so he misjudged a little bit. Dale Jr was only doing what he was told to do. When Jr pulled in every other time, like he normally does, then he did fine The crew chief picks the pit stall and it looks to me like Lance picked a bad spot because the 17 had him trapped all day long.Jr's pit crew needs a lot of work anyway. He has the worst pit crew at HMS!!! Ryan McGee was right on with his Power Rankings this week. Jr would be just fine, and win tons of races, if he never had to come down pit road. I realize Jr has made his fair share of mistakes. However, his pit crew loses him spots on pit road every week on a consistent basis and something needs to be done about it. All of his teammates have great pit crews and they gain positions on pit road on almost every stop. For Jr, it is very rare that he comes off of pit road in a better position than he came on it. I want to know when changes are going to be made to correct these problems that they are having. This would not be tolerated at all if it were Jeff, Jimmie, or Mark. If they had problems on pit road then the problems would be quickly corrected.Again, I am not trying to absolve Jr of all blame. He has made mistakes. However, there is another problem practically every week on pit road and it is not always Jr's fault. It is happening too much to just ignore it!

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

This may be the longest question I've ever had on chat, and I'm not sure if it's even a question. Thanks for spelling it all out, though.

Randy (Milwaukee)

David - you said earlier that you're wondering if Penske's preping Allgaier to move to the 77 - so how long do you think the Hornish Nascar experiment is going to last and will Hornish move to a IRL Penske car or find another Nascar ride?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I don't think Penske will kick Hornish out during the season, but another bad year and I'd have to believe he'd send him back to IRL.

Fred (WI)

Between the two of them, Kenseth wrecked Gordon at Bristol (we all remember that one), Gordon very obviously wrecked kenseth at Chicago (an example of whenhe does it, it's not his fault. i believe his excuse was he got on the gas before matt, but there were no bad intentions). At Vegas gordon plowed up into the 17 and took them both out with under ten laps to go, and add this weekend. I can make a few conclusions from this, 1 Kenseth may have started it all, but Gordon seems to play the poor me card allot when he gets wrecked, or wrecks the 17. #2 It seems that he two get together quite a bit. #3 Gordon seems to have a sence of entitlement (maybe deserved), and Kenseth doesn't like it when it involves him. The two seem to really dislike one another.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

There does appear to be something there. Man, I am getting more commentary than questions. I like it though.

Chip (WV)

I have eyes...

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Good to know.

Chip (WV)

Kenseth has slim oppurtunities to be around jeff... hard to get that ford up front...

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

I have eyes, and Kenseth was second in points before Monday. So he's been up front.

Baseballman387 (MD)

Which tracks will most likely to lose a date: Martinsville, California, or Michigan?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

I am hoping California. After that Michigan. I'd hate to see Martinsville lose one. We need more short track racing.

Tom (Detroit)

lol...you sort of dodged the question on that one;) Most sources felt the last caution was not needed at all (the way they were calling, or not calling, the show from the beginning.)

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

So who are your sources. And I learned to dodge questions by asking NASCAR questions for a lot of years.

Chip (WV)

keep it short jennifer... not reading that book right now

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

I've got the cliff notes.

Kevin Hansen (WI)

Besides the whole ending, what is going on with Gordon's team, he is really good at the beginning of the race but it seems every week he struggles in the middle part of the race and rarely gets it back.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Nothing major at all. He's been really close and I don't see him staying out of Victory Lane much longer.

Tom (Detroit)

WV goes down against Duke;)

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Wrong. My dad went to Duke btw.

TG (PA)

Dave, hope you and your family have a great easter. Don't let Ernie eat any chocolate

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Thanks. You as well. Ernie seemingly will eat anything except for the dogfood we give him.

Tim (AZ)

Has the let the boys have at it philosophy changed NASCAR closer to the one we all wanted back? Sure seems so!

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

I'd say it's better because you're getting action and still having more than a few cars on the lead lap at the end. But the biggest change remains double file restarts.

Ed (Fort Worth)

Who cares if Gordon or Kenseth started it? It's nice to see some attitude back in the series.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Agreed.

Dale Jr (NC)

Do i win at phoenix, texas or dega? or none

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Texas and Dega. You're way overdue.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Well, got to go. If you're really bored there is a Shirley Jones birthday tribute on TCM. Make sure you catch the Nationwide Series race at Nashville. Sure hope Kyle Busch doesn't break another guitar. Happy Easter to all.
