Chat with Pat Yasinskas

John (Unionville)

Any word on Hurney signing his deal. If when he does do you think that means Fox will get a new deal?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

No word. But I know the offer was made quite a while ago. For all we know, it might already be signed and a done deal. Hurney's not gonna allow team to announce it. He doesn't like attention. Last time he signed an extension, I got it out of Jerry Richardson and it was several months after the deal had been signed. In this situation, I don't think it really has much impact on Fox. Bottom line is he's gotta win to get a new deal. I think it's safe to assume Hurney's going to be there this season. If they were making a move at G.M., it would've happened back in January, not in June or whenever the speculation says his contract is supposedly up.

Nathan (Orange County)

Any more info or inclination that the Bucs may be in play for Haynesworth? A McCoy/Suh and Haynesworth tandem would be unstoppable. They could line up any DE and they would be productive.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

No indications whatsoever on that one.

John (Unionville)

Why has the RFA market been so dead with the FA being so weak?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Nobody wants to spend money.

Mads (Denmark)

What kind of a season do you think John Abraham will have?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Falcons really believe he's gonna bounce back. I'm not so sure. He is getting up there in age.

Joe (Ohio)

Is it remotely possible for Marc Bulger to come in to Carolina as the vet. qb they are looking for.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Haven't heard anything to lead me to believe that will happen. But haven't heard anything to lead me to believe it's not a possibility. I have heard, though, that they are not interested in Jason Campbell.

jim (ocean springs)

How do you get the auto update to come on?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Any readers know how to help Jim out?

Anthony (Californ-I-A)

Do you know the status of aqib talib with the league? i know he settled his incident outside of court but do you think a suspension could come???

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

I believe that still is a possibility.

Nathan (Cary, NC)

Wait... Hurney has been offered a new deal? When? And for how long out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Hurney operates very privately and doesn't like being in the public eye. But there was an offer made sometime last season. I believe he was waiting to see what happened with Fox, out of courtesy to Fox. Again, they're not going to come out and publicly announce it. But I suspect something already has been done or will be done. A team wouldn't be sitting there with that kind of uncertainty at G.M. this time of year.

Mike (NC)

Pat, As a long time Bucs fan....give me some food for thought........The Bucs need that speed rusher from the end they have lacked the past few years......A whole lot of people clamored about at Paul-Pierre.....what about George Selvie, he is very talented and was all the rage for about 2 years and now has fallen off the face of the earth it seems.......wouldn't it be great value to get him somewhere round 3 or even later in round 4.......my opinion he fits the bill of very athletic DE who can get after the QB and generate the speed the defense needs to be effective

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

I think Selvie would be nice value in the 3rd or 4th. I've always liked him.

Austin (Tampa)

Pat,Why arent the bucs trying to make Ruud happy and resigning him? He is one of the few good players on the team.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

He's kind of a victim of the whole uncertain labor situation. Bucs don't have to pay him right now, so they're probably not going to.

Greg (Cleveland, OH)

Hey Pat, great coverage of the NFC South as usual. I know GMs are notoriously coy this time of year, but when you sat down with Dimitroff and Smith, did they mention anything in particular that they saw as areas/positions of improvement for 2010?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Well, they don't even try to be coy about the fact they need to improve the pass rush. They've admitted that much.

Joe (OHIO)

Marc Bulger to Carolina?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Not ruling it out. But you might not see anything until after the draft. Could be other guys available after the draft.

Chris (Kingston, ON)

any word of any good WR on the market or be via trade for bucs? I keep looking but don't hear many names.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Think WRs will come in draft. If they were really interested in any of the guys available now, they probably already would have made a move.

alan (iron station,nc)

I know everybody things the Panthers are going to draft a WR for the 48th pick, but i dont think so because none of the young WR's have impacted the team since Kerry Colbert and even he was a bust. Wouldnt they rather use their first pick on a DT.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Those would be my thoughts exactly.

Cobi (Gulf of Mexico)

Hey Pat , I know this is crazy to think of but when will we find a replacement for drew brees ?!?! I know he can probably play at this level for 7 or 8 more years , but i'd like to see them draft a decent rookie as a quility backup ...... Your thoughts ?!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

That's a few years down the road.

Nathan (NC)

I know you said the Panthers are not interested in Campbell, and I know you operate by certain rules, but do you know of any reasons why there is no interest, that you can tell us?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Gotta play by the rules. Let's just say when I ran it up the flag pole, I got the impression it wasn't gonna happen.

Bert (Raleigh)

Pat are you going to be able to handle Connor riding the Bench again this year with James Anderson starting. Just how I see it.GO HOKIES!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Hey, could happen. Anderson's got some talent.

John (Raleigh, NC)

Any chance the Panthers are going to slide D Jarrett into the second receiver spot this year? He looked great at the end of last season. Everyone says he is a bust but how do they know....The kid has never been given a chance at some real playing time. That has to hurt his confidence. Sometimes I think Fox is too conservative. AKA keeping Jake in for so long last season.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

To be brutally honest, I'm not sure that anyone can truly succeed as a No. 2 WR in that system. Or at least succeed like we would all expect a true No. 2 WR to produce.

Nick (Raleigh)

With the signing of Alex Brown, and the resigning of Anthony Hargroves, what do you think the Saints will do with their first three picks, and when do you think they will address the Tight End position?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

You still could see a DE somewhat early, but doesn't have to be first. OLB is still a need. TE can be handled in middle rounds.

Tommy (Metairie,La)

Who would be the ideal pick for the Saints at #32?Any word on RFA deals(P.Thomas or J.Evans)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

All quiet. Believe the deadline for offers is next week.

Pat Yasinkas (Tampa)

Do I ever really talk to myself?!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

More than you can imagine. But I do spell my last name right when I write to myself!! Just having fun with you.

Cobi (Gulf of Mexico)

Tell Jim to refresh it !!!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Try that.

Nathan (NC)

I agree with John - the Panthers at least need to give Jarrett a long look at the #2 slot. It's not like they have anyone else, and they might as well really find out if that was a wasted pick.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Gotta at least give him another shot.

glenn (baton rouge)

pat please tell me the saints are not seriously trying to sign ramsey or mccown, they should go after pennington, campbell, bulger, or someone else with some value

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Think they're just kicking tires right now. Might as well wait until after the draft. Could be better guys coming available.

Nathan (NC)

Pat, why can no one succeed in the panthers system at the #2 WR spot? Muhammed did well a number of years (dropped a lot of passes last year), and we all know Jake locked onto Smith waaay too much. It seems like that could be more of the QB than the scheme. Moore made good use of Muhammed last year, much better than Delhomme (though, you could have done better than Jake in 2009).

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I'll try to summarize quickly. Moose was good in his first stint. When he left, Jake and coaching staff never had confidence or comfort level with any of the guys they tried to replace him. And you're right, Jake locked onto the little guy WAY too much. But the coaching staff is largely to blame for that. Also, there has to be a certain chemistry among the WRs. Think it was there with the younger Moose and, to a lesser degree, with the older Moose. But not sure anybody else has had much of a chemistry with the guy on the other side.

Josh (NOLA)

So will do you think Sean Payton is going to be bringing back Joey "Piano Man" Harrington. I know the last 2 yrs. they have flirted with the idea of him as a 3rd QB

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Nah, think that experiment is over.

A to the Run (Sugar Hill, Ga)

Pat, I truly appreciate the insight regarding the NFC South and x-tra hard work that you put in to make it happen!! Most players drafted as "replacements" for current starters on NFL rosters need 2-3 years to groom. Can you name one or two current Falcons who we need to be drafting for and replacing in the lineup for the near future?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Tight end, running back and center jump quickly to mind.

Alex (Wilmington,NC)

Pat, am I the only Panthers fan in the world who feels we did Jake wrong, I'm mostly a baseall fan and I know that when coming back from an injury like his you get a more power the second year then you ever had, thats why alot of his passes were high which created tip drills and so many int.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

No, I like Jake a lot and defended him for a lot of years. But, after last year, he had to go. There was no way he could stay on that team.

Todd (Chattanooga)

Seriously I've thrown out 2 questions with no response I just saw you answer virtually the same question from the same guy 2 out of 3 questions

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Seriously, I'm getting hit with hundreds of questions. I don't even see them all. I answer as many as I can as quickly as I can. Keep sending your question. That's your best chance.

Jamie (atlanta)

If Dez Bryant is still on the board at 19, will the Falcons be able to resist such a talented guy?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Yep, I think they go ddefense.

Mike (Manhattan ks)

Do you think any Bucs have trade value and do you think Dom makes any draft day trades?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

If anything, he trades down to add draft picks. They'd love to get something for Leftwich, but may just have to cut him.

John (Raleigh, NC)

Pat you always talk about how the panthers management hates people with character flaws. You also constantly talk about chemistry between the #2 receiver and Steve Smith. If you can't get along with a single guy in the league then wouldn't you consider that a character flaw? Personally I think that is pure nonsense and if the panthers don't get someone in that spot or a good slot receiver the Panthers will never truly utilize Steve Smith while he is in his prime. I mean come on take a chance on someone.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

I hear you. It's not my philosophy. I'm just telling you how they think and operate.

Jane (Chapel Hill )

Is there any word on Greg Williams being courted by anybody, or are the Saints going to get to keep him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Think you're safe with him for another year. If he were going anywhere this year, it would've happened by now.

Dillan (Lafayette, LA)

Hey Pat, I am finally able to attend your chat live, although I check your blog at least five times a day. Anyways, with the signing of Alex Brown, this seems to be a HUGE addition for the Saints d-line....So my question is what do you see the Saints doing on third down pass situation..... With Bobby McCray, Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove, Sedrick Ellis, and Alex Brown.....with all of these good pass rushers, the only thing i can see is McCray blitzing from a linebacker spot....... What is your take on this????

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

You could see McCray in for Brown in passing situations. Think McCray has more ability in that area.

Ben (Tampa)

I would like your take: Sue or McCoy for the Bucs if they are both availible? Please dont say that you like them both.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Suh. But I don't think McCoy's a bad consolation prize.

foaming at the mouth (Some where out there)

Are the Panthers bringing in a veteran QB or not? And if so who do you think it will be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Hang on until after the draft. Think they might wait to see what else might be out there.

Mark (NC)

Pat,Who is the best RB in the NFC South and who would you rather have D Will or J Stew?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

I take a healthy DeAngelo over anybody.

Richard (Ann Arbor)

Ultimately, does it really matter who the Saints have to back up Drew Brees? Any of the available guys have about the same level of drop off in talent.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

Agree.

Chris (B-Town, NC)

Are the Panthers going to do anything to make the team better?!?!?!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Yeah, they're going to draft some players soon.

Shane (College Station)

Brandon Marshall to Carolina makes perfect sense to me. I know there are the character issues there but Steve Smith has already spoken out about wanting to increase the longevity of his career and not be relied on for the entire passing game. With Marshall they bring in a proven receiver and not someone from USC. This can also open up the running game for D-Wil and J-Stew and will help make the transition easier for Moore. Do you have any input on this possibility?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Input, no. Marty Hurney listens to his scouts, coaches and owner. Insight, yeah. Like I keep saying it just doesn't fit how Carolina operates.

Ben (Tampa)

Is Golden Tate considered a 2nd rounder? If so will anyone in the NFC South take him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Yep, I think Tampa Bay and Carolina are real possibilities.

CollegePark4Life (College Park, GA)

What a relaist expectation for the Falcons former 1st and 2nd rounds pick's coming into this year off injury??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Think they'll both be starters and Jerry will be an impact player.

Andrew Malcolm (Atlanta, Ga.)

If the Saints repeat as NFC South Champs, what kind of pressure does that put on Smith and the Atlanta Front Office?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

It would probably be good for them to at least be in as the wild card.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Sorry, but I've got to run. Gotta a draft prospect on phone that I've got to interview.
