Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Ah, the warmth is back in Florida. Sun is shining. Rays got a big win. Life is good. Let's chat hoops!! Got a new opera (for me) playing, Verdi's "I Due Foscari". "Fat guy in a little coat. Fat guy in a little coooaaat:.

Chris ((NY))

Some jerks are saying the Butler and Duke game was awful to watch? They say it was bad offense and football like defense. You agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Absolutely, except it wasn't a bad game, just dry of super talent and execution. Great for heart, drama, passion.

Nick (Earth)

what is your favorite food?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I'm pretty fond of the popcorn I'm snacking on right now.

BON (Chi town)

Bulls have any chance now that Bosh is out indefinitely?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Yes.

Keith ((Houston))

Give me your odds John Wall is the next Steve Francis?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

0.0

Alex (New York)

Do you think that Toney Douglas can become a top tier point guard in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

No. But he can be a steady pro.

Vick (Atlanta GA)

Do you think Gordon Hayward will enter the draft? Who could you compare him to?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Yes I do. He should. He'll be Mike Miller.

Joe (NYC)

Roddy Beaubois has been a pleasant surprise for the Mavs this year. Will he take over the point when Kidd retires? Is his ceiling closer to Tony Parker (with a jump shot) or BJ Armstrong?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Yes, and I think he can be really, really good. Much better than BJ.

Paul (LA)

Does Kyle Singler leave? Should he?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes, yes, if he wants to be in the NBA.

Josh (Miami, FL)

What is wrong with the fact that Lebron and Wade might miss the worlds? Its a huge time commitment and these guys need rest. Its not the Olympics!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I think it's healthy for the players and our country for there to be some turnover year over year on our squad.

Michael (LA)

What type of player do you see Steph Curry in 3 years?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Nash like.

Joe (NYC)

Derrick Rose's midrange jumper looks so much better than last year. Can he improve his three-point range this summer like he did his midrange game or would he be best served to work on other parts of his game (namely his defense)?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Yes, and it would be a wise move.

Walter Paul Sparrow (GA)

Do you see Dwayne Jones having an impact for the Suns? He has been terrific in the D-League this season. I was surprised his call-up didnt come much sooner.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Me too. I've always been a fan.

victor ((Uconn))

The question of the year!!! Couldn't Mya Moore beat a few NBA players? I'm not talking about Kobe or Lebron but she could definitely beat adam morrison or sheldon williams right?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Right, because those guys struggled as college players.

hank ((MI))

Thrope Dogg! Help me settle and Arguement. Who was better in thier prime? Joe Dumars or Scottie Pippen?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Sportsnation, chime in !

David (DC)

Hey David! Big fan of yours. I was at a HEAT/Magic game a few weeks back and J.J. Reddick and Marcin Gortat connected on an alley oop... Do you think this was the first white-to-white alley oop in NBA history?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

You mean you don't remember the Skiles to Jeff Turner Vanilla oop?

mendel (fl)

Does the fact that the heat rank 2nd in overall points allowed and first in OPP FG % give them any chance at making a serious run in the playoffs? They might lack explosion on the offensive side, but they are killing it on defense it seems!!!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Excellent point, especially when you add the Wade factor.

Michael (Charlottesville Va)

What do you see as Blatche's future. He shows great plays but still a lot of bone head plays. I can't see blatche getting past a scoring big man who doesn't make his teammates better and just shoots contested jumpers.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Agreed.

Brian (Rochester (MI))

Give us your top 5 players in the 2010 NBA Draft.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Not yet.

Jarhett (Sacramento)

After watching the Spurs Kings game last night, I think the player Tyreke should study is Manu. The guy a an uncanny ability to finish the craziest shots which Tyreke has not figured out yet. If Tyreke could make his layups more consistently the Kings would be a lot better.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Excellent point.

Marvin Black (Lexington, KY)

David, if Adam Morrison hadn't injured his knee right before his second year in the NBA, don't you think he would be an All-Star by now?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Now you're being ridiculous.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

It's a "Seinfeld" line, anyone remember it?

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

Hi Coach, on 10/29/2008 I asked you if "Luc Richard Mbah a Moute can be a rotation guy for the Bucks" and you responded "Only if they like losing". I was wondering if you'd care to admit the error of your ways?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I did, long ago. Not the first mistake I made, though my point was he was not ready YET to help them win.

Ian (Fort Worth)

Tommy Boy, chances the Mavs can get there act together and make it to the second round of the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Sure.

Eric (Chicago)

Pippen better than Joe...not because I'm from Chi-Town...it's because it's fact!

Dwight K. Schrute (Scranton, PA)

If all National Basketball Association players were sent into a bear infested forest with only a swiss army knife and a bottle of water, who would be the last man standing?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Reggie Evans, Craig Smith, Udonis Haslem, and Aaron Brooks.

Mike (Chicago)

Doe a high IQ player like Scheyer translate to a role off the bench in the NBA. He has a great assist to TO ratio, can shoot, can defend and just plays smart.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I like him for a team with a wing superstar that is ball dominant. Kobe, Wade, Bron, Melo to a lesser degree.

jean (ny)

jamal crawford will be a house hold name after these playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I think you are right.

tony (wash)

who would you take dwade or Lebron. some guy on Firstake said he would take Kobe and wade over Bron

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Really? Who would say that?

Jack Bauer (New York)

How awesome was the last episode ? potentially the best episode of the series

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Never seen the show. If it's not a comedy, or "So you think you can dance", I'm out.

Ryan (NJ)

Hey Thorpe, I want you to settle a debate for me between my manager and I. He says that this is a players league, and coaches don't really matter. He says that the best players win championships, and more specifically, the best player in a given year usually wins the title. I say that coaches have alot more to do with it than the common NBA fan realizes. I say that Larry Brown turned Charlotte into a playoff team, Popovich kept the spurs in contention for a top 4 seed with a horrible year from Parker, Skiles in Milwaukee, even D'Antoni getting more wins out of a pathetic Knicks roster than most could, etc. etc. I don't believe coaches deliver championships, but they have alot more to do with a team's success than people realize. What do you think? Thanks Thorpe!

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Players are important, of course. But it's a coach's league, pure and simple. Remember, good coaches make their players play better.

samuel (orlando)

is kevin garnett done?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Not quite.

Brendan (St. Louis)

If Hill and Parker are both healthy in the playoffs, do you think this Spurs team may be able to win another championship after all?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Yes. And I made that call in October.

David (Brooklyn)

I feel like David West would hold his own in the bear infested forest. Yes?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Not for long. Haslem and Evans would tag team him and throw him to the bears as a peace offering.

Andy (Rochester)

Has Wes Johnson maxed out his upside to the extent where GMs know exactly what they're gonna get, or do GMs think he can continue to improve (i.e.- dribble driving)

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

No player is maxed out at 22 or 23. But is his game more polished already, yes.

Sam (La Jolla)

Coach, haven't you been impressed with Al Horford's developing post game? Or do you think he's still too mechanical with too few moves?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Yes and yes. If they featured him more, it would come faster.

vegetable lasagna (seat 11c)

love jj hicksons play, but he seems to drop an unusual amount of passes. have you noticed this? small hands? lack of focus? thats my apple juice!

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

It's not small hands. It's a focus issue.

Slim (San Francisco)

Pippen. Not Close. He nearly led the Bulls to a championship without MJ. What do you think of Warriors' Reggie Williams. He seems to be able to shoot, dribble, distribute and play defense. Future role player or starter?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I coached Reggie before the draft a little. He's an interesting talent, but probably would not be playing for the other 29 teams. Now that he's getting time, maybe he'll prove to them that he belongs, probably as a scorer off the bench. he can really score!

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Alex (Utah)

Wouldn't Matt Harpring just jump out of the bushes all covered in mud like Arnold in "Predator" whoop everyone and steal all their stuff?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Rambo style, I like it.

Thomas (DC)

Where do you see Javale McGee in three years? Still a Birdman-esque bench energizer, or can he get it together and start or even become a star?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

He should become a starter at least, but it's hard to see the future for him with the problems Washington is facing.

Truman (Atlanta)

What do you make of Willie Warren and all his struggles this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I always wonder what Dick Vitale thinks.

Frank (Dallas)

The Spurs are just the hot team to talk about right now. The Jazz were that team two weeks ago. The Suns were last week, and now analysts are trying to find another team to hitch their wagon to. Isn't the West gonna be difficult to get through having to play the Lakeshow with home field advantage?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

It's not that important in the playoffs. The better team usually wins, and right now, that's not the Lakers.

Stewart (phila. pa)

David, When you consider how far the sixers have fallen, and how surprisingly good the blazers have been with all their injuries, what does this say for what Andre Miller brings to the table?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

A lot, and that's where my COY resides.

Sam (Chicago)

Can we all finally acknowledge that Deron Williams is the best point guard in the NBA, period.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

The argument is a strong one.

Adam (Carmichael, CA)

Am I crazy in saying that Tyreke Evans will be a top 10 (or higher) player within the next 2 years? he's already averaging 20-5-5, and that's with no visible outside game at all. If he develops an outside shot, what's stopping him from averaging something like 28-6-8?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

He's currently not in the top 50 in PER. I don't see him moving up that much, but yes, with an outside shot he'll be much better, of course. Let's call him a potential top 25 guy, ok?

Thomas (Arlington, VA)

Cousins or Favors, who you got?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Cousins is better, but I'd take Favors.

Eric (Orlando)

Is Vince Carter ready to be a force in the playoffs? He was a beast last Sunday when I was at the game! He seems to have his legs and energy back *two big dunks*

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I think so, yes.

Jay (NYC)

David, if you were Coach Brad Stevens, would you strongly consider an NBA coaching job if you're getting some calls? Personally, I think you're crazy do consider it because of how incredibly unstable an NBA coaching gig is, plus Stevens has the chance to establish something special. Right?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I've known Brad for a decade+. Great guy. I've advised many college coaches to stay at their mid-major schools for 20 years, have the gym named after them, and win 20 games a year forever. In every case, they have taken bigger jobs. It's worked out well for some, poorly for others. Brad will likely move up to a bigger school.

Bryan (DC)

Give it to me straight Coach. I can take it, and maybe I need to hear it from someone else. My Celtics....they kinda stink huh?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

No. Just inconsistent. Can they put together a strong spring run? Yes, but it does not look likely.

Darrington Hobson (Albuquerque)

What's your evaluation of me? Should I leave or go back to school? I am 22...

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

If you want a degree, you should stay. If you want to be a pro hoop player, then leave.

Leland (Pittsburgh )

Did the Butler coach even draw up a play on their penultimate possession? I thought Hayward should have pulled up at the elbow a-la Kobe instead of opting for a fadeaway jumper on the right baseline, which I'm sure you agree is a harder fade away for a right handed shooter. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

In that situation, I wanted him to rebound the ball and immediately dribble into a Duke player that was moving. Force the refs to call a block or charge.

Charles ((Rostamloo, MI))

Is the "Pennypacker, Varnsen, Vandelay" the best scene in Seinfeld history?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

It's on the list, but it's a crazy long list.

noah r (miami, fl)

Can you still see LBJ heading to miami?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Yes, but it's looking far less likely.

Chad W. (High Point)

If you had to pick one skill to focus on with young players...ages 12-15. What skill would you pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Dribbling and layups-with both hands.

Jim (Red Wing, MN)

Hello coach! I'm a huge fan, and would love to get my first posting today! For better and worse, I love my t-wolves, and I'm hoping that K. Love's "demotion" to the bench is part of a plan to highlight Big Al for trade purposes and to show a lot of love to Darko in hopes of convincing him to stay so that we can FINALLY have a true center. Do you think this might be the case? If so, assuming they get Evan T in the draft, should they also try to move up by packaging their remaining picks? I'd love to know what you think they should do!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I can see them trading Al, yes. And getting Turner would be ideal. Rubio, Turner, Brewer, with Flynn off the bench. Nice.

Eric (London)

Hi David, I noticed you never mention much about intelligence in regards to player development in your columns. For the life of me, I can't see a player as "intellectually challenged" as Javale McGee, for instance, having the mental capacity to ever figure out how to play basketball the right way. Am I right or wrong?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I've written many times the Bobby Knight quote "mental is to physical as 4 is to 1".

Patrick (Philly)

Sixer fans are upset about losing Andre Miller but then Jrue Holiday wouldn't have been revealed this year. Keeping Miller would have stagnated them longer. Agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Yes.

Vinay Bhaskara (New Jersey)

So, do you think he Spurs can beat the Lakers in a playoff series??

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I do.

warren (Florida)

Would the wolves trade Kevin Love for Beasley? ANYWAY WE COULD GET RUBIO TOO WITHOUT THROWIN IN "The Miami Hurricane"

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

No.

Brian (NJ)

An entire chat could be devoted to the best scene in Seinfeld history. My vote would be "and you want to be my latex salesmen."

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Now that is the best idea I've ever heard. I'm in.

Jackson (IA)

Thorpe! Appreciate the chats...you pack more info than most into an hour thanks to the short answers! Is there a worse PG situation in the league than the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Thanks. Good question. Maybe not.

Chris (Phoenix)

Sick of hearing how the Suns WON'T do anything in the Playoffs.....tell me how they WILL do something, because I think they CAN!

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Nash and Amare are playing stellar ball, they can be season wreckers for someone.

Felix (Riga, Latvia)

Thoughts on the non-call last night? Talking about OKC-Jazz, of course

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Mistakes happen. Move on.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Thorpedo, my man Lance Stephenson AKA "Born Ready" declared for the draft. Have you had a chance to watch him play? Born Ready is Not Ready.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I've not seen him. But not being ready is not relevant. Is the NBA ready to draft him? That's the question.

brett T (connecticut)

will the pieces of Gallinari, Chandler and Douglas be attracting to some of the big free agent names?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

No. Does not mean they won't get anyone, but it won't be because of those guys.

Jon (NJ)

I saw Dwight Schrute up there so I have to ask: Favorite character on The Office? I have it ranked 1) Jim 2) Creed 3) Kevin 4) Dwight 5) Andy

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I'd go with the Nard dog numero uno.

Carl L. (Sacto)

Coach, I was shot in the leg--and back on the court two weeks later. Much love to Evans and Haslem, but I would eat them alive. And then use the bones to tame the bears.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I'm ashamed I left you out. Don't hurt me.

Daniel (Boise)

The Seinfeld line "well now you being ridiculous" is when Jerry and Elaine are talking about kissing hello

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

You are wise!!

Ron (Michigan)

Joe Dumars worst move- Darko or the signings of Charlie V and Ben Gordon?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I see now why he chose Darko. They just failed to develop him. So I'll take door #2.

Nick (Seattle)

WIth bogut out do you see the Heat now having the best chance at pulling an upset in the East playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Best? Maybe not, but they can clearly do it.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

DT: How important is Lopez to be healthy for the Suns to make a deep playoff push?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Very. Which is the problem. Can he do it?

Ty Lawson (Denver)

Coach Thorpe, why didn't you include me in your Potential Rookies list? Do you really think I've reached my ceiling?!

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I'm an idiot. Of course he belonged in my "10 guys who will be good but will not break into the top 10".

Georges (Ottawa, Canada)

Scottie P. No doubt.

Adnan (Chicago,IL)

How much contact do you keep with the players you workout in the offseason during the season?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

We speak often.

Andy Bernard (Scranton, PA)

Ruh Duh Duh A-Doo Thorpedo.

Justin (Nebraska)

David,I play in a rec-league, championship game is tomorrow, the other team has a crazy good 3 point shooter, usually we go zone, were thinking about a box and 1, is this a good idea?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Any junk defense is best as long as you can rebound out of it. And make him work on d.

Jeff Block (Pittsburgh, PA)

DeJuan Blair would kill a few bears in that forest.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Just a tad young, but yes, he is a beast of the first order.

Rob (Bakersfield)

I've seen it a happen a million times. Next thing you know, change is missing from your dresser and your daughter's knocked up.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Great scene from Tommy Boy.

Kyle (Orlando)

So Anthony Bowie just left my office to pick up a new driver he won at a charity golf tournament and we got into the argument about the Magic VS the Cav's. To get to the point, he said he doesn't think the Magic can get out of the Eastern Finals against the Cav's because Lebron is a beast and Shaq can handle Dwight. No way he's right, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

He could be right, but it's silly to suggest it must happen the way he described.

Brian (NJ)

I watched that OK/Utah game from start to finish last night. I knew Durant was great, but I was still amazed at how great. He is 21 years old!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Unreal.

Tommy (Houston, TX)

Since Chase Budinger is rather tall for his position, what do you think of him developing a post game of some sort so he can post up his smaller defender?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I think it's a great idea.

alroy jenkins (manhattan beach, ca)

does Dragic look like the future starting pt guard for the Suns - or just a good back up?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Good backup, with potential.

R. Pannone (Oldsmar, FL)

Who is your sleeper pick in this years Draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Too early, but I heard about this kid from Liberty...

Joe (Indiana)

Coached 5-6 year olds this year. Most young kids have a 2-handed push shot. What age should you starting working on more traditional one handed jump shot?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

When their hands are big enough. After 10 I'd guess.

karmys (st mark's)

Man, I barely even noticed Kevin Martin's play last night but I turned around and he had 29 with 12/12 ft's. Is there a "quieter" scorer than him??

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

He's pretty rare that way, big scorer that does not dribble a lot.

Goose (Mississippi)

Wesley Matthews or James Harden?

Bill (DC)

Fat man in a little coat = Farley in Tommy Boy (or one of those movies with Farley and Spade).

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Harden, but just asking a legit question like that is amazing, considering one was the 3rd pick and the other was not picked at all.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Oh, and welcome to the show Bill.

Robert (MN)

Earlier in the chat, you answered Favors over Cousins despite him being better in your opinion. Reasoning please?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

I don't trust that Cousins will mature.

Marbleduck (Redding, CA)

you don't add much insight or value with your short, quip-like answers? What's the point of this type of "conversation"?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Sorry to disappoint you man.

Joe (Cleveland)

David who is the leagues best on the ball defender in your opinion. I hear a lot of debates on the topics but never from someone who breaks down film like you.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Hinrich is good. I love Sefolosha.

Jordan (Houston)

how do you see the season playing out for the Rockets next year? if everyone is healthy? and from what i have seen from Jordan Hill he looks great! what was Mike D's problem in NY?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Honestly, the Jordan Hill deal is a shock. I love what he brings.

Alan (Baton Rouge)

James Harden or Marcus Thornton?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Ooh, a close one. As an off the bench scorer, it's MT!! But as a starter, I'd go Harden.

Alex (Auburn)

The Jordan Hill deal was just to shed Jeffries. Unfortunately, that's what it took to clear cap.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Jeffries was a beast last night in Memphis. Double double I think and made some huge shots down the stretch.

noah r (miami, fl)

to answer a previous question why your answers are short, let me answer for you. He writes short answers so he can answer over 100 questions... he gets thousands and cant get to everyone. Be thankful he answers more than any of the other guys that do these chats!

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Thanks Noah. We all do our chats in our own way.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Got to go, but thanks everyone. 900 questions and they are still pouring in. Enjoy the last week of the regular season. Have a great weekend. Be safe.
