Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! Live from Atlantic City in the press room at Caesars. Just was at the Pavlik-Martinez weigh in. Plenty to discuss this week. We have a new notebook, a few blogs and a good weekend of fights. So let's get to it.

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

Was running a couple of minutes behind due to computer issues but big props to Ed Keenan, PR king, for getting it fixed.

Dan Rafael
  (4:08 PM)

Good atmosphere at the weigh in. A few hundred people, mainly Pavlik fans, cheering. Both guys looked in great shape. Martinez put on a body building show and had the Youngstown fans booing him. It was cool.

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

Terrific fight I think. I favor Kelly, but if Sergio wins I will not consider it a big upset. Really high class fight.

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

I think it will depend on the fight available.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, let's get right to the important question...who you got in both the Pavlik-Martinez and Bute-Miranda fight? I've got Martinez winning by a couple rounds...and Bute to win a decision.

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

Picking Martinez is a legit pick. I think it's a very competitive fight. I like Bute bute by a decision as well in the Montreal fight. I am hoping I can watch it on a monitor at ringside in AC instead of waiting to watch it until Sunday.

Chris D. (Chicago)

Found your Berto blog unwarranted. There's a big difference between being a TV draw and a live draw.

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

First off it's MY blog and my opinion. You are entitled to yours as well. I agree with you there is a big difference between the two but when it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO out of proportion I think it's a legitimate dicussion.

Mitch (Oakland)

Great that the deuce is picking up the Lemieux/Ayala fight. Love it. Thanks again!

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

I love it too. I think very highly of Lemiuex from what I have seen so far.

Steve (PA)

Who is working HBO this weekend Larry or Max?

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

Larry is in AC and he's here in the press room. Max is working with the BAD crew on the Montreal fight that will open the telecast.

nate (poconos, pa)

Hey Dan, if Kelly gets by Sergio, is it a forgone conclusion they go for P. Williams? If not, who would you see as next in line, again, if Kelly gets by Segio?

Dan Rafael
  (4:14 PM)

When it comes to the difficult relationship between the sides nothing is a forgone conclusion. Obviously, if Pavlik wins and Williams wins in a few weeks, people will still want to see them fight. Pavlik says he wants it. I know Paul is a competitor and wants it. But it's business so who knows?

Don (Buffalo)

Is that rumor about Valuev / James Toney on 5/29 true?

Dan Rafael
  (4:16 PM)

There was some conversation about them maybe making the fight but it doesn't look like it's going to happen at this point.

Chris (Beverly Hills, CA )

Hi Dan-Didn't the IBF order a purse bid between Wlad-Povetkin which could make any Wlad-Haye fight moot? What fight do you see going down? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

They are in the free neogitation period. If they don't make a deal the IBF will call a bid on April 22, and the bid would be scheduled within about 10 days. However, if Wladimir asks for an exception the IBF will consider that. If the Povetkin side is OK with that, and I think it is, the IBF will take that into account when considering the request for the exception.

Mike (Massapequa)

Going on the record, Martinez by UD, Bute by 4 round KO, Mayweather will make an a** out of himself atleast 3 times on 24/7

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

Solid.

Dan Rafael
  (4:18 PM)

Freaks, we have a special guest -- Bob Arum is sitting down answer a few question.

Elliot (Cleveland)

Is the Hasegawa-Montiel fight still happening?

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

As far as I know yes.

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

By the way, Bob says Pavlik and Williams is an excellent fight and if they win that's the fight to make. Kelly would agree to go forward with the fight under the same terms as the previous deal they have.

Matt (Washington, DC)

I love you Bob, but isn't sticking up for Antonio Margarito disrespectful to Miguel Cotto and other fighters you have an obligation to?

Dan Rafael
  (4:21 PM)

Bob says Antonio Margarito has never been shown to have done anything wrong against any fighter ever. The California commission revoked his license because of what his trainer did and acknowledged that there was no evidence that Margarito knew anything about the improper gauze pads in his wraps. Indeed, the commission inspectors testified that in their opinion Margarito was unaware of the improper nature of the pads.

Indeed, the commission inspectors testified that in their opinion Margarito was unaware of the improper nature of the pads.

Joe Montana (South Bend)

Bob,Please clue us in to your plans with this kid from Notre Dame and how legit of a fighter you think he can be. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (4:23 PM)

You're talking about Mike Lee, the light heavyweight. Bob says his first fight is on May 29 on Top Rank Live on the Fox networks. According to Ronnie Shields (his trainer), he is a hard-punching tough son of a gun. How good he will end up being remains to be seen.

Manny Pacquiao (General Santos)

Bob, would you like to make a contribution to my political campaign?

Dan Rafael
  (4:24 PM)

Bob says Manny under Filipino election laws, he is not allowed to contribute to the campiagn or for that matter to the campaigns of any Filipino.

Chuck (Philadelphia, PA)

Dan/Bob can you talk about Miguel Cotto and where you think he's headed with the new hiring of Steward? Can he come back and be that dominating fighter we knew? I am impressed how conducts himself in the ring, class act.

Dan Rafael
  (4:25 PM)

I think Manny can definitely help him because of his experience and the respect he commands. Bob says Miguel is a terrific young man and Manny Steward will only make him better.

Joe (NY)

Bob...if it isn't Floyd for Pacquiao in the Fall / Winter, can we assume Margarito is the frontrunner for that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:26 PM)

Bob says if Margarito wins his fight on May 8 against Garcia and Floyd either loses to Mosley or is otherwise unavailable Margarito would definitely be the No. 1 possibility for Manny.

Dave (San Jose)

Just read your blog, didn't know that Caballero-Yordan was gonna be for an interim title - it made me laugh so hard. How can they have 3 titleholders in 1 division? Seriously, how do they even justify that?

Dan Rafael
  (4:26 PM)

It's the WBA -- what do you expect.

Bert (Fontana, CA)

Bob, have you spoken to Clottey since the fight? What was going on in his head? He seemed to really rock Pac with the few uppercuts he threw between Manny's guard. Dan... My birthday is coming up, how about sending me a copy of that Sanchez-Gomez fight? I ask about once a year... I try not to bug.

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

Bob says he has spoken to him and Joshua told him that he had never been in the ring with someone remotely as fast as Pacquiao and he was unable to deal with Pacquiao's speed and work effort.

Bryant (Pitt)

Bob any chance to get like 20$ back from march 13 undercard????

Dan Rafael
  (4:28 PM)

I bust Bob's chops about that all the time. He says I'm sorry you didn't like the undercard on March 13. He said he thought it was very good. You are drinking too much of Dan's kool-aid.

Roy (Reno)

Bob! What do you think about Pac VS Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

Bob says Berto looks like he will be a real force in the welterweight division. He has to be a little better known to be a viable opponent for Manny, but certainly not out of the question for the future.

Aaron (MA)

can you ask Bob what fight may open up the June 5th HBO telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (4:31 PM)

I asked Bob this earlier. He says they are currently talking with HBO and they have two fights in mind -- one is Vanes Martirosyan against Joe Greene and the other is Mike Jones against Antwone Smith.

Henry (Columbus)

Bob, why wouldn't Mosley get the shot against Pac Man if he were to defeat Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (4:32 PM)

Bob says Mosley in order to get the Floyd fight had to give Floyd a rematch clause. So he would be unavailable.

Chris D. (Chicago)

If you don't mind answering: Dan, who's the most difficult fighter you've interviewed and Bob, who's the most difficult fighter you've promoted? Most pleasant?

Dan Rafael
  (4:33 PM)

I would say Hopkins is tough sometimes because you don't interview him. He just talks. Roy Jones in his prime was tough because you could never get him to show up. As for Bob, he says Floyd Mayweather was the toughest. Most pleasant was Hagler.

jerry (cambrio)

Bob, will Mayweather endorse Pacman for Congress in Phils.?

Dan Rafael
  (4:34 PM)

Bob says Mayweather is one of the most despised people in the Philippines. He can help Manny out by endorsing his opponent. (I am cracking up on that one).

Homer (Cleveland, OH)

Bob, what are the chances of bringing Pavlik to The Q or any other Cleveland arena/stadium?

Dan Rafael
  (4:35 PM)

Bob says Top Rank would have to talk to the Cleveland municipal authorities to have them waive an extremely high city tax before we could consider bringing Kelly to fight in Cleveland.

Matt (Washington, DC)

How much marinating should we expect the Juanma-Gamboa fight to take? I understand the idea is to build it up into something huge, but I'd hate for it to get messed up while we're waiting who knows how long for it. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (4:36 PM)

Bob says he is looking forward to having Juanma against Gamboa as the feature bout or co-feature at the new Meadowlands Stadium next spring.

Todd (Denver)

I like to know what Bob thinks of the Super 6 and is he sorry he's not part of it.

Dan Rafael
  (4:38 PM)

Bob says the Super Six is a good idea although he would prefer a tournament where the loser goes home. It is less complicated that way. He said he has no fighter in the super middleweight division at the time the tournament was organized.

Tom (Washington, DC)

Bob, why haven't you built a following for the Petersons in DC, its a great fight town!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:39 PM)

I ask him all the time about this and want him to bring them to DC. Bob says he spoke to Barry Hunter (the manager) last week and they agreed that if the Petersons are successful in major fights they will be having this summer they will do a boxing event for both in Verizon Center.

Nick (L.A.)

Dan, will you post any tough questions. Perhaps the Freaks should ban you and your cream puff posts.

Dan Rafael
  (4:40 PM)

Ask a hard one.

Eddie (Bronx, NY)

Bob, if Pacquiao vs Margarito ever materializes, where is the most likely place that it will be held?

Dan Rafael
  (4:41 PM)

Bob says any Pacquiao fight would only be held in any of three states -- Nevada, Texas and Florida. These states do not have an income tax and Manny as a non-resident alien would pay a penalty if he fought in a state that had a state income tax.

Matt (NYC)

Bob - Mayweather/Mosley, who R U Picking?

Dan Rafael
  (4:42 PM)

Bob says the problem with the fight is that if it were held five years ago he would pick Mosley to win easily. But at this point in time, at Mosley's age, he gives the nod to Mayweather.

Brent (Toronto)

Hi Bob, when will Matty Korabav start facing serious opposition?

Dan Rafael
  (4:43 PM)

He is on the card Saturday night. Bob says it seems to him that Matt is ready to step up his level of competition but that will depend on Bruce Trampler (matchmaker) and trainer Kenny Adams.

Joe the Barber (NYC)

I would like to know if Bob watched the Caballero fight, and if he is hesitant to match Juan Ma with him for fear that a loss would blow up the Gamboa match?

Dan Rafael
  (4:44 PM)

He said he watched the Caballero fight and Caballero is a very good fighter but Juanma is booked to fight Concepcion July 10 on Showtime.

Trent (Los Angeles)

Any truth to the rumor that Sergio Mora is next for Pavlik based on a contractual obligation from last summer?

Dan Rafael
  (4:44 PM)

Not at all.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Bob,With all the great fights that you've promoted over the years and have ownership/broadcasting rights to, will we, the fight fans, ever see them available on DVD? Or possibly a Top Rank Boxing channel perhaps?

Dan Rafael
  (4:45 PM)

Bob says he hopes so. Todd duBoef (the president of the company)has been working on this for more than a year.

Harry (Denver)

Dan can you ask Bob why he would let Gamboa fight Caballero but not Juan Ma?...Seems like he knows Caballero would smoke Juan Ma...

Dan Rafael
  (4:46 PM)

He said when he made Concepcion-Santiago he promised the winner a shot at Juanma.

Chris D. (Chicago)

Big props to Dan for sharing his chat today -- this is really fun!

Dan Rafael
  (4:47 PM)

Glad you are digging it.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Bob,Who was/is the biggest washout you've ever promoted and regretted it ever since?

Dan Rafael
  (4:47 PM)

Bob says Hasim Rahman.

Tom (West Windsor, NJ)

I just want to thank Bob for his hard work. Promoting isn't easy, especially when business interests conflict with what the fans want, but he's doing a hell of a job. Plus, Top Rank couldn't have been more helpful in helping me get tickets for tomorrow.

Dan Rafael
  (4:48 PM)

Bob says thank you, you're going to see a great show.

Charles (Philly)

I've been posting some tough questions, and I'm not always a fan of Bob's big promises. But I have to say this: by doing things like putting on a mega-fight at the Cowboys' stadium, I think Bob is reviving boxing. And I am grateful for that.

Dave (Ocala, FL)

Any chance Pacquiao will give in to Mayweather's blood test demands?

Dan Rafael
  (4:49 PM)

Bob says drug testing is an issue for the boxing commissions. Manny is not going to give in to any demand from Floyd Mayweather or anyone else. Filipinos will never take guff from any bully. It's not in their nature.

nick (ky)

Hey Bob, if Cotto gets past Foreman, would a trip back down to Welterweight for a fight with Andre Berto be viable? I feel like it would be a logical fight at 147 for Miguel, and a very winnable fight.

Dan Rafael
  (4:50 PM)

Bob says he could use another matchmaker at Top Rank. The fight certainly sounds good to him.

Ricardo (LA)

Bob, If you can't make Pac vs Margarito, would you make Cotto vs Margarito 2?

Dan Rafael
  (4:51 PM)

Bob says he would like to make that rematch if the Manny fight didn't happen. It would depend on Miguel.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

With all his clout...why has Bob been unsuccessful in bringing boxing back to some of the major networks, like in years past? (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc)

Dan Rafael
  (4:53 PM)

He says the network business has changed dramatically. Boxing will be seen only on cable, premium or basic for the forseeable future. Eventually, all boxing will be televised and shown on the Internet.

Steve (PA)

Ask Bob who he thinks is better all time Roy Jones Jr or B-Hop?

Dan Rafael
  (4:54 PM)

First off, Bob has at one time or another promoted both guys. He says Roy Jones was one of the greatest athletes boxing has ever produced. Bernard is a much better technician although not nearly as athletic as Roy. The only true test was the first fight in Washington in 1993, which Roy won easily.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Big ups to the Bobfather for Top Rank Live...it's been phenomenal so far

Dan Rafael
  (4:55 PM)

He says thank you very much and Top Rank will continue with terrific matchups in the US and in Mexico in the months ahead. (I happen to agree -- the card have been excellent so far).

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

vic darchinyan and gary shaw are saying they signed the rematch contract for the nonito donaire fight and that Top Rank isnt getting abck to them, what is the hold up??

Dan Rafael
  (4:56 PM)

Bob says Gary Shaw (Vic's promoter) is handling the deal with Carl Moretti of Top Rank and he hopes it will be finalized shortly.

Ricardo (LA)

So Bob, is Gamboa facing Caballero next?

Dan Rafael
  (4:58 PM)

He says his co-promoter with Gamboa (Ahmet Oener) is unavailable because he is serving a month in the Turkish army. If he emerges unscathed from his military obligations they will discuss the fight him.

JONG (LA)

Dan, please tell me that we have seen the last of Holyfield and Jones in the ring... one of them at least?

Dan Rafael
  (4:58 PM)

Unfortunately, probably not.

mike (baltimore)

Bob, what's one fighter you wished you were able to promote that is currently not part of top rank?

Dan Rafael
  (4:59 PM)

Bob said he would have loved to have promoted Felix Trinidad and would love to promote either of the Klitschkos.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Bob, more Omar Henry please!

Dan Rafael
  (5:01 PM)

Bob says Omar is a terrific young fighter with a very pleasing style and you will be hearing a lot from Omar in the near future. (I love the kid's power).

Alec (Nashville)

Mr. Arum, what do you really think of Don King? Don't pull any punches.

Dan Rafael
  (5:01 PM)

Bob says Don King is a contemporary of his and was one hell of a promoter in his day.

Chris D. (Chicago)

First off, Bob, thanks for not doing it, but have you ever been tempted to promote MMA give its meteoric rise in popularity?

Dan Rafael
  (5:02 PM)

Bob says no. He says MMA for him is unwatchable. This may be a generation thing but he is not going to promote anything that has no appeal to him.

Christopher (Staten Island)

Hey Dan, do you know if a TV station in America is replaying the Haye-Ruiz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (5:03 PM)

Not that I am aware of.

Brent (Detroit)

Bob, would you say that out of the rest of your Promoter Bretheren, Lou DiBella is the easiest to make a deal with?

Dan Rafael
  (5:04 PM)

Bob says DiBella is a real pro and it is relatively easy in a short period of time to determine whether a fight can or cannot be made with him. Some of the other guys love to screw around forever and nothing happens.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Ask Bob if he will be happy if Mayweather loses

Dan Rafael
  (5:05 PM)

Bob says he would be overjoyed for Shane Mosley, who is truly a nice guy. Otherwise, he really couldn't care less.

Dan Rafael
  (5:05 PM)

Freaks, Bob has to go but he enjoyed himself and says thanks to all the Freaks for the questions.

Dan Rafael
  (5:05 PM)

OK, Freaks, let's keep it up. Now I am with you answering.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Is Bob not typing himself because he is too busy flipping people off??

Dan Rafael
  (5:06 PM)

LOL! Not at all. Bob was in a good mood today.

John (San Fran)

Bob, who should the Giants draft in the 1st round?

Dan Rafael
  (5:07 PM)

He liked this question and is still around, so he says a linebacker, the one from Alabama (can't recall his name).

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Ok Dan, the Freaks wanna hear it...what are your thoughts on the May 1 undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (5:08 PM)

Read my blog today. It is very weak.

Willy (Bronx)

When do the Cotto-Foreman tickets go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (5:08 PM)

They went on sale at noon ET today.

Keiran (Syracuse)

Dangaroo, I need video of the Antwone Smith body shot you so nicely described in your weekend scorecards!! I can't find it on youtube...I hope that kid gets the Mike Jones fight, upset waiting to happen??

Dan Rafael
  (5:10 PM)

I got the video of it the other day and it was just a slamming body shot.

Joe the Barber (NYC)

Any idea at this point if there is a large contingent from Youngstown and if they are expecting a big crowd tomorrow night. Can't wait for this fight...I have a good feeling about it

Dan Rafael
  (5:11 PM)

There are a lot of people from Youngstown here already. I was told earlier they expect a crowd of about 8,000-plus.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

My bad for not reading the blog first Dan. I submit to Freak shame. The linebacker Bob spoke of was Rolando McClain...

Dan Rafael
  (5:12 PM)

We have breaking press room news.

Dan Rafael
  (5:14 PM)

I was told by Cameron Dunkin, who manages Pavlik and Tim Bradley, that the Bradley-Maidana fight (ppd from June 19) has been rescheduled for July 17 on HBO.

Yinka Double Dare (Chicago)

Dan, you just broke your promise from last week to end Robert the Genius's streak of having questions answered in over 30 consecutive chats.

Dan Rafael
  (5:15 PM)

You are right. I'll take care of that next week.

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

Kind of an old question; how many people attended the Dirrell-Abraham fight in Detroit?

Dan Rafael
  (5:16 PM)

About 5,000.

jack (fort collins)

to bad bob is gone. i think you should tell him that matirosyan/greene would be an awesome opener for foreman/cotto.

Dan Rafael
  (5:16 PM)

That fight is very possible for that card.

Roger Mayweather (Las Vegas)

I can breath a sigh of relief. I thought the breaking news was about me receiving an arrest warrant

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan, do you think Martinez has the decipline to box and move with Pavlik...or does he let his fighting instincts take over and try and slug....which would be bad news for Martinez

Dan Rafael
  (5:19 PM)

Martinez defintely has the ability to box and move with Kelly. But will he? That's the question.

Alec (Nashville)

What's up with Shane's tattoos? Who gets their first tat at age 38?

Dan Rafael
  (5:21 PM)

I was surprised to see that on 24/7. Seemed odd to me.

Roy (Reno)

I love the Bradley-Maidana fight but it amazes me why HBO allows some fighters...Berto...showcase after showcase and throws other fighters right to the wolves. I wish they made every fighter take tough bouts

South Fork Walter (LA, CA)

Holy crap! I've been slammed at work all day and I thought I'd just read the transcript and you're still on! You rock King Freak!

Dan Rafael
  (5:22 PM)

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Tony (kissimmee)

Bob honest truth what do you think of Dan Rafael i know there are times you dont agree

Dan Rafael
  (5:25 PM)

I can answer that one -- Bob and I do not agree on everything. We often disgree severely. But I have always respected Bob and I think he respects me, other than giving me the finger once in awhile. :)

FightFan (WI)

Bob, do you still have Oscar's Olympic Gold medal?

Dan Rafael
  (5:25 PM)

FYI -- Bob gave it back a few years ago and it hangs in a display case in the Golden Boy offices.

Brock (Illinois)

Please tell me Alexander is going to get someone acceptable since Bradley and Maidana are busy. I need a good fight here in the Lou.

Dan Rafael
  (5:26 PM)

They are looking for an opponent. I hope it will be somebody solid.

Jeff (LA)

Do you think that the potential Klitschko/Haye is warranted to be at 50/50? Adam Booth said that is the only way it gets done.

Dan Rafael
  (5:28 PM)

He can say what he wants but Klitschko is way more established, generates way more money overall and has more titles. He deserves more than 50 percent.

Tom (Bristol, England)

Dan, have you managed to watch the Audley Harrison knockout of Michael Sprott? Knockout of the year candidate? It was a crushing left hand!

Dan Rafael
  (5:29 PM)

Yes, I saw it. Great knockout. Not as good as when Sprott knocked out Audley in their first fight, but pretty sweet.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Awesome move by DiBella to tell the WBA to shove their title and $12,000 fee. More of that please.

Dan Rafael
  (5:30 PM)

YES!

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

I'd looooove to see Berto fight Randall Bailey -- truth serum for Berto's chin. (but isn't Bailey the mandatory for Zaveck now?)

Dan Rafael
  (5:32 PM)

Berto-Bailey is a very interesting fight. And it's easy to make since DiBella promotes both guys. That said, I don't think it will happen. Berto's management is smarter than putting him in with a puncher like that.

WBC Board of Governors (Mexico)

We are hereby stripping Jose Sulaiman of his title of WBC President for Life...and promoting him to Super-President for Life.

Dan Rafael
  (5:36 PM)

Classic.

ztrain (oxford/ma)

dan do you think bob honestly thinks berto's name isnt big enough or does he just want to promote to top rank guys wit a pacman margacheato fight , clottey was a big name berto pacman in fl

Dan Rafael
  (5:36 PM)

If/when Berto's name is big enough I don't think he would hesitate to make the fight.

John (LA)

How many do they expect at Yankee Stadium for Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (5:37 PM)

It's set for about 35,000 and they expect a sellout or damn close.

Homer (OH)

Wow... 1 hour 35 minues and no Love Child. Heard anything from Julio's camp?

Dan Rafael
  (5:38 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I saw LC last week at the Berto fight. He came over to say hello and we chatted for a couple of minutes. His english is MUCH improved and he lifted his shirt and he looked in great shape. He said he appreciated my support for him and said he would fight his best. He's a really nice kid. I think it will be a good fight.

Deegh (Elk Grove, CA)

Viva Love Child!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (5:39 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Bo (NYC)

Dan, isn't Wlad calling out and going after Haye a bit desperate? That clearly provides Haye much more leverage in the $$$ discussion.

Dan Rafael
  (5:40 PM)

Not at all. Wladimir knows it's a big fight and the fight the fans want and Wlad wants a defining fight, which this would be. He also really doesn't like the guy and wants to kick his ass.

Homer (Cleveland, OH)

If the alphabet's love stripping people so much, why don't the get strip club business

Dan Rafael
  (5:40 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

The "he bitched out on me and then he bitched out on my brother" quote from Wlad was awesome. And totally true.

Dan Rafael
  (5:42 PM)

I was shocked when he said that but it was a great quote.

Jim (New York)

Dan, what are you thoughts on Duddy-Chavez?

Dan Rafael
  (5:43 PM)

WC.

Mike (NJ)

Dan I love your work against the WBC. My question is, how big is the entire WBC organization? Is it Suliman and his secretary or a huge operation? Seems to me like there is not much for them to do that would require tons of people...

Dan Rafael
  (5:43 PM)

Thanks. It's not huge, but they have representatives all over the world.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC HQ)

I think that the WBC Diamond Belt is more legit and honorable than the WBA's 3 titles in one division?

Dan Rafael
  (5:45 PM)

You're banned.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Why would Haye care about the split with Wlad? Haye fights for legacy. At least that's what he said last week.

Dan Rafael
  (5:46 PM)

Exactly. (He lied).

Joe (Boston)

The blog had a "paging Luis Collazo" blurp in there. I thought he was going to turkey to fight for an interm belt. If not any chance we finally see a rematch between him and Berto, very soon if possible.

Dan Rafael
  (5:47 PM)

I spoke to Collazo's adviser/trainer yesterday and they are not going to Turkey, at least not for the weak offer they say they got from DKP for the fight.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, have you seen HBO's Real Sports recent episode on Alexis Arguello, Vernon Forrest and Arturo Gatti yet?

Dan Rafael
  (5:48 PM)

Guess somebody didn't read today's blog.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC HQ)

I'll give you the WBC Diamond Belt for boxing writers if you stop talking about me

Dan Rafael
  (5:49 PM)

No, you're still banned.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

WBC = Wanna Barf Constantly

Dan Rafael
  (5:49 PM)

Legendary.

Rick (Marina)

In the pic on the boxing page of the weigh in what was going on or being said?

Dan Rafael
  (5:50 PM)

Pavlik and Martinez were barking at each other. Martinez was giving the throat slash sign. Pavlik was staring at him.

South Fork Walter (LA, CA)

Dan the Man, are you coming to Ontario next weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (5:51 PM)

No, I've traveled three weeks in a row and five of the last seven. I need a weekend at home before the Mayweather fight.

Howard (NJ)

WBC = We Be Crazy

G$ (Oakland)

Odlanier Solis vs Valuev? Any chance its lands on Top Rank Live? Solis might have enough pop to drop the Russian Giant

Dan Rafael
  (5:55 PM)

Probably too big of a fight for that series.

John (Grand Rapids, Mi)

WBC = Wankers Belts & Charades

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

What are you thoughts on the new WCB intro music last week? I say from bad to worse

Dan Rafael
  (5:55 PM)

I would say it's a mild improvement but it still sucks.

Seamus (Ireland)

Dan, do you own a David Haye voodoo doll?

Dan Rafael
  (5:56 PM)

No, but I am considering picking one up.

Rick (Marina)

I was watchin highlights of Finito Lopez, he was awsome, skill and power for such a small guy.

Dan Rafael
  (5:56 PM)

One of my all-time favorite fighters. I was really happy that I was able to cover in person thet last couple of fights of his career and I was honored to write his bio for the HOF induction program a few years ago.

ed (butler,p.a)

the wba wbc and ibf are like my health insurance they are rip offs.

Bryant (Pitt)

DTM on record Martinez UD Bute 8th TKO

Phil (NJ)

I'm going to the Pavlik vs Martinez fight and I was wondering if we will see the Bute fight?

Dan Rafael
  (6:00 PM)

No. I say come to the AC fights and tape the HBO show and watch Bute when you get home.

Tim (Des Moines, IA)

DAN! Does it ever bother you that you have the best job in the world but often "mail it in"?

Dan Rafael
  (6:01 PM)

Does it ever bother you that you have the IQ of a corn stalk?

Jim Lampley (HBO)

CHAT! You got a question? CHAT! Dan will answer it. CHAT! Don't ask a stupid one. CHAT! Or you will get banned. CHAT! CHAT! CHAT!

Billy (NJ)

i've noticed you've written about the contracts and live gates of fights in your recent blogs. do you have to go the state athletic commission office to get that info or can you just get it on the internet? any cost to obtaining it?

Dan Rafael
  (6:03 PM)

Some is on the Net,some just takes a call. Nothing has cost me money yet. It's all public information.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

If Boxing were Caddyshack... Jose Sulaiman would be Judge Smails grandson, Spalding. "DOODIE!"

Charles (DFW)

Worst reality: The Icelandic Volcano or the fact that Holyfield is someone organization's heavyweight champion?

Dan Rafael
  (6:06 PM)

Damn, tough call.

Alec (Nashville)

Can we get a Froch vs Kessler prediction a week early?

Dan Rafael
  (6:07 PM)

No.

Jon (Worcester, Ma)

Have you seen George Foreman's son fight yet?

Dan Rafael
  (6:08 PM)

Yes.

Keith H (Seattle)

Dan, I'd like to nominate Bing in Philly as Jose Sulaiman's Diamond Interim Special Assistant.

sk (Arlington, VA)

next week RAD possible?

Dan Rafael
  (6:11 PM)

Very good possibility.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - In your opinion, what are Pac's best wins and what are Floyd's best wins?

Dan Rafael
  (6:13 PM)

Manny has a lot of great wins, but his best are probably smoking Oscar (in a fight nobody gave him a shot to win) and Cotto. Mayweather's best wins are Corrales and Castillo.

Mike (Los Angeles)

For the record: Andre Dirrell to win the Super 6!

ed (butler)

dan what do u like most about your job?

Dan Rafael
  (6:13 PM)

Going to fights.

Craig D. (Philly)

Could you please open a dialogue with HBO and tell them the Freaks demand to see the ring card girls on the actual broadcast and not just hearing the people in the crowd whistling at them. For the love of God...

Scott (San Antonio)

Met Sugar Ray Leonerd at the airport today. Couldnt have been nicer. Talked boxing for 15 minutes. Said he wouldnt sure if Shane could pull the trigger fast enough for Money. But said it should be a great fight.

Travis (Boise)

I HAVE TO POOP

Dan Rafael
  (6:16 PM)

These are my readers.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, it was great meeting you last week at the Champs at Sawgrass Mills. I was the annoying guy, who wouldn't leave u along. Was the poor attendance at the Berto fight due to his inability to draw, or South Florida not being a real boxing town? The fights at the Hard Rock are heavily papered.

Dan Rafael
  (6:17 PM)

Good to meet you also! I think South Florida just rots to sell tickets. Even the Marlins, Dolphins and Panthers don't sellout their games.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, tell me where I can find it if I missed it, but what are your thoughts on the Mayweather-Mosley undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (6:18 PM)

Today's blog.

Lilah (AZ)

LONG LIVE LARRY MERCHANT!!!! I love Larry!

Dan Rafael
  (6:21 PM)

Agreed!

James (Seattle)

Dan Have you ever meet Joe Kozumi?(the writer from japan) caz he is the only guy i know that ussually reports from japan

Dan Rafael
  (6:21 PM)

Yes, I have met Joe many times and email with him. He's a wonderful guy.

Big T (Pittsburgh)

Dan - Have you seen the leaked Mosley PED video? If so, any surprises?

Dan Rafael
  (6:23 PM)

I did see it yesterday. Can't say I was shocked. I'd like to see the unedited version, not the version Conte's people edited.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Who gets the DVD collection in your will?

Dan Rafael
  (6:23 PM)

Not you.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Bob, you always look so reserved sitting ringside. When was the last time a fight made you jump out of your seat?

Dan Rafael
  (6:24 PM)

None.

R! (Yay Area)

So whats the plan with Humberto Soto? Will we seem him in a big match soon? A. Peterson, Valero, Robert Guerrero

Dan Rafael
  (6:25 PM)

He defends in Mexico on Top Rank Live and if he wins, the mandatory with Peterson is supposed to be July 24 on HBO on the Gamboa undercard.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Buy or sell: Kevin Mitchell vs Michael Katsidis becomes a fight of the year contender ?

Dan Rafael
  (6:26 PM)

Buy, love that fight.

Grover (Denver)

WOW... I drove home 30 minutes and you are still going!!!! Long live the King!!

Dan Rafael
  (6:26 PM)

Don't forget it.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan....is the Kameda family...especially the father....as crazy and disgraceful to boxing as the articles say about them ?

Dan Rafael
  (6:28 PM)

Don't know, never met them.

Kane (Orange, TX)

Saw Rock Allenon 24/7. He is huge. Any idea why he has he been inactive for almost a year?

Dan Rafael
  (6:29 PM)

When I saw his father, Naazim Richardson, at the Hopkins-Jones fight I asked him what was up. He said Rock was out for so long because he had a shoulder problem and had surgery but was going to return shortly.

David (Houston)

Ellerbe says to us...."floyd didnt know about the rematch clause till after the fact." lol i agree it is a good business move but come on now. is floyd the most insecure fighter of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (6:30 PM)

No offense to Leonard, but I do not believe for one second that Floyd didn't know he had a rematch clause.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,I know Shane divorced his wife Jin who was also his manager. Does she still do that for Shane? Or have anything to do with Boxing these days?

Dan Rafael
  (6:30 PM)

No, she is not involved anymore at all.

Chris (Tempe)

Who's got a better chance of scoring an upset Saturday - Miranda or Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (6:33 PM)

Martinez, which I wouldn't even consider that big of an upset.

Brandon (De)

Dan have you ever met Nikolai Valuev he seems like a smart and nice guy, its a shame he gets such a bad rap because the way he looks and how damn tall he is

Dan Rafael
  (6:34 PM)

I met him once, when I was in Cancun for a fight and he was at the weigh in. Seemed like a nice enough guy.

Corey (WestWick)

Have they confirmed the Marquez vs Diaz rematch for july 10th thats my vac time might have to go

Dan Rafael
  (6:34 PM)

They are working on it but I do not think it is 100 percent done yet.

Dave, Las Vegas [via mobile]

What on earth is there to do in Atlantic City that you can't do in Las Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (6:35 PM)

Who knows? All I know is I can drive here instead of having to get on a plane.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, leading up to and during the Funeka-Guzman fight, several journalists and braodcasters referred to the lightweight division as one of the weakest in the sport. I don't see it. In fact, I think only SMW, WW, and JWW, are better/deeper than lightweight. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (6:37 PM)

I think lightweight is awfully weak right now. Junior lightweight also.

Kenneth (Toronto, ON)

Buy or sell: Gamboa vs. Valero?

Dan Rafael
  (6:37 PM)

Sell all day. Ain't happening ever.

Jeff (Cincinnati)

Will HBO televise an undercard fight on the Paul Williams - Kermit Cintron card?

Dan Rafael
  (6:39 PM)

No live undercard fight.

ed (pa)

who is the ref in the pavlik fight.

Dan Rafael
  (6:39 PM)

David Fields.

Un-named (SLC, UT)

I once stood by Jose Suliman at a convention and he dropped probably the stinkiest gas bomb I have ever smelt. You think I'm joking; it about killed me and it cleared the area. It was so bad he wouldn't have even sanctioned it even though he's generally sanctions crap.Yes...I am one of your readers.

Dan Rafael
  (6:40 PM)

Too much info.

Mike (Des Moines)

I know you're critical of Vitali Klitschko fighting this Sosnowski dude, but why shouldn't VKlitschko stay busy, especially since many of the top contenders have other fights to deal with?

Dan Rafael
  (6:42 PM)

Of course he should stay busy. I just think that opponent is absolutely horrific.

Ryan (Lawrence, PA)

Dan, your post on the Funeka-Guzman fight was a little confusing. Which fighter tested positive for a banned substance? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (6:43 PM)

It was Funeka only. It was a typo in the story that is being fixed.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Dear God D$$$$ I sent a question when the chat start at work! at 4pm i just drove thru traffic grabbed dinner and your still chatting oh we are not worthy king freak!!!!

Jeff (Cincinnati)

Have the official numbers of the Hopkins-Jones PPV been released yet? Can we count the buys on two hands?

Dan Rafael
  (6:45 PM)

Nothing official, but they are saying around 130,000-150,000ish.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, thanks for writing something on Lorraine Chargin, for all those who have met her are the better for it

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, are you eating dinner while doing this chat? It will soon be past your bedtime.

Dan Rafael
  (6:47 PM)

No, but I'll grab some dinner when we're done with some of the PR folks here.

NYPD Blue (NYC)

Dan, any kind words for Tony Thompson, who is on FNF tonight against Owen Beck and seems to be on a nice run since his competitive loss to Wladimir?

Dan Rafael
  (6:48 PM)

Tony's last fight was a good fight with Chazz Witherspoon in AC. I was at the fight. I think Tony beats Beck easily.

Dan Rafael
  (6:50 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Glad you enjoyed Bob's participation. Great weekend of fights. Hope you enjoy. And make sure you check out the notebook and the blogs and the updated schedule. Enjoy the shows. Talk to you next week. Peace.
