Chat with Matthew Berry

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:02 PM)

'Sup kids? The most self indulgent column ever soon to be posted but in the meantime, we'll chat about whatever is on your minds. All subjects answered... let's rock and roll.

Jason (Tampa)

Which lefty will score more fantasy points in an ESPN h2h format?C.Kershaw, D.Price, F.Liriano.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:04 PM)

You know I'm gonna say Liriano. Assuming you get points for IP (that you are not playing categories), Kershaw falls just short. I'm all in on Francisco, but, as you know, I'm not rational about it.

Nolyn (ND)

Which 3B would you rather have for the rest of the year? A. Ramirez or J. Cantu? Projected season stats? Thank you!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:05 PM)

I'd rather have A Ram, but I'll tell you that I think Cantu is both legit and the safer option. More upside with A Ram - Cantu is not going to hit 35, let alone 30... A Ram could. But Cantu will do .285/25/90

Chris Davis (Texas)

I guess that's why they call spring training stats meaningless, eh?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:06 PM)

If you listen closely, you can actually hear Justin Smoak packing.

Phil (Phoenixville)

Still can't believe Nate won't fully cop to being wrong on Frasor. He's a weasel. Hey, speaking of Frasor, I own Gregg -- should I drop Bard for Frasor?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:07 PM)

His weaselness has reached epic proportions. Yes, I would. You'll get at least 35 saves from those two. Barring injury, you wont get more than 5 from Bard.

LAst place fantasy manager (NV)

Im being offered Kemp for the Kung-Fu Panda...do I take it. (I have Braun and no back up 3rd baseman)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

In a heartbeat. Worry about 3B later. Kemp is on his way to a MONSTER season. Love Pablo, but Kemp is in another league

Brandon Webb (Phoenix)

Drop me for Jaime Garcia?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

In a non keeper 10 team league? Yes.

Hoov (Work)

...and by self-indulgent you mean you're going to tell us how wrong Ravitz is ... again .... right?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

No, that's for the podcast. The column is all about ME

Donovan (Washington DC)

Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!! Terrell Owens!!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:10 PM)

HELLS NO. Don't we already have enough guys who can't separate at the line?

Amigo (Emeryville CAL)

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

By littering everywhere so folks have stuff to pick up today and feel good about themselves.

Hector (atl)

Is there reason to be concerned with ARam? Offensive strikeouts are counted in my league.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

Well, in that league, I understand the issue, but overall... it's way too much of a small sample size to panic

Cliff (Bos)

loyal listener and DLer. speaking of Harang this guy is my fantasy Kryptonite. Every year towards end rounds he is there and i go he had bad luck last year and take him. When will i learn my lesson

Gil (Boston)

Harang, Hochevar, and Zambrano, pick two for the rest of the year

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:13 PM)

Lotta Harang questions. It's bad. I'll take Luke and Big Z

Amigo (Emeryville CAL)

Are you attending the All Star Game at your baseball teams stadium this year? hooters has a shuttle to and from the ballpark

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:17 PM)

I'm hoping to be there, yes along with the ESPY's, which are in LA the same week. Did not know that about the shuttle, but car pooling is always good. See? THERE'S your Earth Day tip.

JT (Boston)

If I were a carpenter and you were my lady, would you take a gamble on Jose Guillen or let someone else pull their hair out?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:20 PM)

Wait, why do I have to be the lady? And why do you have to be a carpenter? Can't you be a doctor or internet mogul or something? I'm fairly certain I'd be a very high maintenance lady.Anyways, yea, the question with Guillen is not power but healthy. As long as he's out there, giddy up.

Nathan (CT)

kyle shooting blanks!...ughhh

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:22 PM)

Patience! I still believe.

Mr. T (Mohawkville)

Mr. T doesn't like the way Chad Billingsley is pitching.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:23 PM)

Neither does TMR. TMR is worried. TMR likes talking in third person. TMR needs gold chains.

MIKE (TAMPA, FL)

Who gets the call first? Smoak, Wallace, Jennings...who has the bigger impact this season? Thanks TMR

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:25 PM)

Think you have them ranked right, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Wallace first. Lyle Overbay is like a dead carcass out there. Think both are there much sooner than Jennings

Dan (San Jose)

I'd pull your hair out Matthew...

Ronan (Ireland)

Can you rank these three......Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher ?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:25 PM)

You have them ranked correctly.

Mr. T (Hoboken)

I pity the fool who has to stomach Billingsley's WHIP!!!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

Sad to say, but this actually made me laugh out loud. What can I say? I'm easy

Damon (Poplar Bluff, MO)

Watched "Silly Little Game", was the first time I had actually seen Nate. He even looks like a weasel!!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:27 PM)

Hahahahaha! He doesn't, actually, but I'm always down for more people on board with Nate being the weasel.

Dave (TX)

So the ChiSox are really playing poorly, and many pre-season fantasy darlings aren't meeting expectations. Do you see Beckham and Quentin picking it up?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:27 PM)

of course. IT'S STILL APRIL

Steve (SF)

Can you give me two good reasons to download your fantasy podcast?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:28 PM)

1) It's free.2) You don't actually have to listen. We only care if you download.3) It'll make you feel better about your own lame jokes.

Jonathan Sanchez (The Bay)

Picked myself off of waivers...can you believe that someone dropped me? Then plugged myself into the lineup and blew it up!!! Just wondering if I can this up...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:30 PM)

Yeah - I talk about you in today's column and discussed you last week on Fantasy Focus. If you look at his numbers since his no hitter last year, you see this is not a mistake. Ridiculous numbers.

Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles, California)

I don't appreciate all of this laughing at my expense.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:30 PM)

Throw a strike. We'll shut up.

James (MD)

Would you rather hang out with Kiper, because he's got enough hair for the both of you, or McShay, because he's more your age?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

I'm a fan of both, but I'll say Todd since I actually know him and am a bit friendly with him. I've never met Mel.

Chris (San Jose, CA)

Have we decided on the best possible nickname for Doug Fister yet? Settle this debate once and for all.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

The best nickname will not be appearing on ESPN.com

Luke (Tampa)

More played out fantasy chat gimmick: submitting questions using the names of the player OR.....actually forget it. That is the most played out.

Cody (Columbia, MO)

How have you never met Mel Kiper?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:35 PM)

He rarely comes to Bristol and there's very little fantasy overlap with what he does. (because you can't really discuss a guy's fantasy prospects until he has a team and once he has a team, Mel is done with the majority of his work). I know the guys who do NFL and MLB the best, I know the folks that do college sports and are on the road the least. We're a pretty big company, you know

Donna (NYC stern fan)

Matt - how often do you recommend to "let out the poison"

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:35 PM)

Always. Get that poison out of you, Donna.

Brent (Nashville)

Is this chat about Matthew Berry or about baseball?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:36 PM)

You're really gonna hate my column this week.

Cattie (Office)

Any chance you can answer anything useful today?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:37 PM)

Why start now?

ari (deal, nj)

please rank the following pitchers, Anderson, Liriano, Hamels, and Jonathan O.?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:38 PM)

Cole, Liriano, Sanchez, Anderson.

eric (cup)

still stand by your prediction that kemp will be the only 30/30 guy this year?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:38 PM)

Yes.

Donald (Tulsa)

Why is Scott Baker ranked so high with fantasy analysts, because i just don't see it? he just gave up 10 hits and 6 ER to the weakest hitting team in the AL.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

Nate and I got into an argument about this - I'm a genuinely worried about Target Field for all the pitchers except Liriano. (because he's a big K guy). Baker is rated that highly because he has a long history of success. But yeah... he makes me nervous

Pat (NY)

Don't you people know by now Berry chats are filled with nonsense sprinkled with the occasional fantasy advice.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

Hey, not just my chats!

Vinny (NYC)

If you own Chris Davis, is it worth going over the top on an Ike Davis FAAB bid?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:41 PM)

No. I'd defintiely try to get him, but I'd temper expectations on Ike. He's still unproven as well.

Walter (Boone, NC)

Should I even keep David Ortiz on my bench? I feel like he is a waste of roster space, but I love the guy

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:42 PM)

Will you be unable to love him if he's on your waiver wire? Because that's where he should be.

Jim (Syracuse, NY)

RANK MINE PLEASE: Porcello, WDavis, Latos, Strasburg, Garcia. Also, Borbon or AJackson? Thanks!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:45 PM)

I'll say Borbon over Jackson, believe it or not. Think Borbon tunrs it around and Jackson has been getting lucky. SP: Davis, Garcia, Strasburg, Latos, Porcello

vk (dc)

No chance Braun goes 30/30?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:46 PM)

Chance? Of course, but I just don't see him stealing that much

Kelly (Brooklyn)

Brett Anderson BEHIND Sanchez??? You're a MADMAN BERRY! YOU'RE A MADMAN AND I WANT NO PART OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Both play in good pitchers parks, Sanchez will strike more guys out, gets to play in NL and has as good or better chance at wins. It's close, but from a fantasy perspective, I bet Sanchez has the better year

Joe ((Chicago))

You were high on C. Davis pre-season. Based on today's chat, it seems that you would now throw in the towel. True? Isn't it still early?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:49 PM)

I was. And I remain hopeful. So no, not throwing in the towel, but it's getting pretty havey to hold on to, you know?

Shai (Brooklyn Heights)

Casey Mcghee - for real?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:49 PM)

Yes

John (LA)

You've lived in Conn. for a while now - scale of 1 to 10...1 being a prison sentence and 10 being your definition of paradise...give us your current rank...and be honest.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

I'll say a 6. Love my job and have a few very good friends, but I definitely don't have the social life I did in LA. And the weather isn't great

Shaun (NYC)

Feel good about dumping Harang and adding Chris Young(SD)?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:51 PM)

You had me at dumping Harang.

Bill (denver)

True or false - your contract term with ESPN is coming up and you're a long ways apart on negotiations.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:52 PM)

False.

Jeff (Boston)

What ever happened to Christopher Harris? I enjoyed his fantasy baseball writings. Is he no longer with you guys?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

No, quite the opposite. He's been buried, doing all of our player profiles and projections for football. He still appears on Fantasy Focus video on Tuesdays and Fridays, though I'll be on tomorrow because he'll be doing write-ups based on the draft. He's been doing tons of stuff on football - all the trade spins, etc - just not as much baseball as a result. And I agree with you - he's terrific.

Mark (NYC)

Yet another person confuses you with Bill Simmons

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:55 PM)

I can only assume. By the way, I have no idea what is going on with any ESPN talent's contract. None of my business.

Richard (New York)

Matt...7 minutes left...time to drop Ibanez?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:55 PM)

No. Hold tight.

Jackie (SF)

Why not just relocate the ESPN LA?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:56 PM)

It's been discussed but the problem is Bristol is where the majority of TV is done and it's not like I do a specific show, except Fantasy Football Now on Sunday mornings during football. I do quick appearances on many shows, making it much easier for all involved to live here.

Cattie (ND)

Everyone keeps telling me to sell high on Vernon Wells, but is it really selling high if everyone knows it? What do you think he could be worth?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

Think he winds up with 20-25 home runs and a .270 average

Adam (PA)

Just to clarify/elaborate on the whole 'is it too early to drop' debate that's common in these early chats. First off, don't take this the wrong way...I love these chats and appreciate your time/insight. But I think when people ask "Should I drop ____" keep in mind, they're replacing that player, quite possibly, with a lower recognized player that you or another expert recommended (Blanks, Guillen, etc). So it's not necessarily asking "Should I drop Quentin for a triple AAA player," its more along the lines of "is this player gonna get their act together FAST or significant enough to make the 6 week crapfest endurable?" Just my 2 cents

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:59 PM)

I agree with you - but I can only answer what is asked. Should I drop Ibanez for Guillen is a different question than should I dump Ibanez or hold tight?

Bill (Denver)

I didn't confuse you with Simmons. I heard a rumor and wanted to confirm. I would guess that Simmons may be paying more in taxes than your gross salary..and I, for one, think you are the fantasy franchise and need to get paid as such. By the way, when are you next coming out to visit me and Aunt Mary?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:03 PM)

Hahaha. Well, thanks. Not sure where you heard the rumor but I haven't even begun negotiations on my next contract. I'm very happy at ESPN and so far, they seem to not hate me, so I'm very optimistic that when the time to get a new deal comes around we'll be able to work something out. For everyone else - I have no Aunt Mary.

Aaron (Brooklyn)

Grady Sizemore is a top ____ player at the end of the year

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

75. I'm really down on Grady. This is in my column coming out soon, but I'd rather have Choo than Grady and I don't think it's that close.

Dave (DC)

Buzzer Beater!!!! Pick one for the rest of the year: Strasburg or Ted Lilly.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

Lilly.

Troy (Toronto)

Sabathia for Kemp, would you do that deal?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

If I was getting Kemp? Yes.

homer (springfield)

pelfrey or garcia?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

Like both a lot but I say Pelfrey. I'm a believer.

Marty (Mass.)

Hey Matthew love the 30 for 30 doc silly little game any chance we get themspecial guest some of our founding father's and mother's on the pod cast to talk fanatasy

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:06 PM)

Yeah, they did a nice job with it. Okrent was on two weeks ago

Harley (Bartsch)

You will be getting a bill from me for about $25. (That is what an hour of my life is worth)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

Not if you were in this chat it isn't.

Frank (VT)

TMR column up next for you today? Any early hints?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

All about Matthew Berry. You'll see.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:08 PM)

It's long and self-indulgent, but I liked it. Think those that are fans will enjoy. And those that hate will really enjoy hating it. Also talk about whether guys are legit or flukes.

Ronan (Ireland)

I am reading "Talented Mr Roto" now.....peace out !!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:11 PM)

Then I will leave you all to it.http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=tmr100422Thanks for stopping by!
