Chat with Dana O'Neil

Dana O'Neil
  (4:01 PM)

Busy day for a random mid-April afternoon.

Anthony (Rochelle, IL)

how do you feel about Duke's chances to repeat after Singler decided to come back for his Senior year?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:02 PM)

Anthony: Duke should feel a whole lot better about the Blue Devils with Singler back in the fold. Definitely be the top team to start the season.

Jon (NYC)

Dana, the NCAA finally made a smart move by expanding to only 68! Are you hearing anything on which seeds the 4 paly-in games will be for or has that not been discussed yet?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:03 PM)

Jon: NCAA said that wouldn't be decided until summer. But I will have a column up shortly on who I think ought to be in those play-in games.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Which College Basketball Players who Played in the National Championship game on April 5 at Indianapoilis will play in the NBA in 2010-2011?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:04 PM)

Chris: NOt many. My guess Devin Ebanks and maybe Gordon Hayward, if he stays in.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:04 PM)

Chris: NOt many. My guess Devin Ebanks and maybe Gordon Hayward, if he stays in.

Mike (Maple Shade, NJ) [via mobile]

Dana, who do you think will end up as the next Rutgers coach? Thanks!

Dana O'Neil
  (4:05 PM)

Mike: Don't know for sure, but the short list I've heard includes Jim O'Brien, Fran Fraschilla and Fran Dunphy. We'll see. Interesting hire.

Ian Cartwright (Los Angeles)

Have you yourself considered applying for the Oregon coaching gig? Nobody else seems to want it.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:05 PM)

Ian: I'd go for a cool $1.5 a year.

David (Detroit)

Dana, 68 teams is better than 96, don't you think?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:06 PM)

David: Waaaaay better. Manageable, meaningful and doesn't kill the regular season or hte conference tournament. Still leery that it could expand to 96 down the road, but I'll take it for now.

James (Indiana)

Who's preseason number one next year...MSU or Duke?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:07 PM)

James: I'd say right now with Singler back, Duke gets the edge.

Nick (Wisconsin)

How do u think Kentucky will do next season and do u think they ARE already favorite for 2011-2012 season

Dana O'Neil
  (4:08 PM)

Nic: Well, certainly Kentucky is reloading. This class isn't the class that just left or the class that appears to be on the horizon, but still a nice group. I do wonder, however, if you can build a program on the backs of one and dones. THink you need some stability along the way.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Dana, Texas biggest loss going into next years is that of Damion James. Can Tristan Thompson fill that PF/SF role? If so sould this team be a lot better with a year of maturity and almost everyone returning.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:09 PM)

Blake: Theoretically, I agree with you but I also thought Texas was going to be a whole bunch better than it was this year. I need to be convinced now.

Michael (Evansville, IN)

So Dana, help lays this out here for us. The reason to expand to 96 teams was money, right. The NCAA could use a bigger tournament to coax more money out of a bidder. Now that the bidding is over and CBS has won, the NCAA has its money and there is a longer term deal in place, the NCAA no longer has any financial incintive to further expand the tourney, right? So unless CBS actually has power over the NCAA to force it to expand, we aren't likely to go to 96 teams until the end of this deal?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:11 PM)

Michael: Maybe but I'd say if CBS/Turner finds that people aren't flocking to the television for a handful of games, it could push to add more to the field. Also if the NCAA thinks it's membership wants to expand, it will expand. Don't think anything is set just yet.

Marc (Big D)

Dana please tell me I am not crazy and Jajuan Johnson is not close to ready for the NBA.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:11 PM)

Marc: You're not crazy. I think he should come back but the NBA loves 'upside' and 'potential' so it's very hard to know what JaJuan will hear and do.

Daniel (Columbia)

How do you like Mizzou's chances next season with the great recruting class comin in?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:12 PM)

Daniel: I think Mizzou will be very good next year, agreed. Good class coming in, nice nucleus coming back and their coach isn't going anywhere. that's a nice combo.

Marc (Charlotte)

Dana, are you one of the people who believe Duke overachieved? I find it hard to believe since they started 4 McD AA (all Upperclassmen), but K seems to have the media believeing anything he tells them.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:13 PM)

Marc: To an extent, yes. I mean this team wasn't loaded with NBA talent and had underachieved prior. Add to the fact that the Blue Devils really changed the way they played to fit their needs and I htink you have to give the Devil (K) his due on this one.

Brian (Washington, DC)

Dana, do you think John Beilein regrets leaving WVU? WVU just went to the Final Four while Michigan continues to stink up the joint.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:14 PM)

Brian: Not a fair comparison. THe players that came to WVU to play for Huggins aren't the same ones who would have come to WVU to play for John Beilein. And the players that stayed played completely differently.

Ann (Seattle)

How much longer will Oregon be coached by TBA?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:15 PM)

Ann: TBA. Seriously, I have no idea. Heard names but been hearing names for a long time now. Not a well run search.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

With 68 teams we need new terms for the tournament rounds...Round of 34, Eleight Eighteen, The Fine Nine.......

Dana O'Neil
  (4:17 PM)

Blake: Ha, but I'll take it over the round of 96 and so on.

Ian Cartwright (Los Angeles)

Am I wrong to think that Kentucky has become the de facto NBDL team for last year's graduating class?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:20 PM)

Ian: Starting to look like that way, isn't it? Talent just flying in to Lexington by the hour.

Will (Eugene)

Dana, you may be the best option at Oregon. If they don't offer the job to you, will Mike Brey accept this late in the game?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:21 PM)

Will: Don't know but seems a weird fit to me. I mean, he coached at Delaware in the BIg East. Odd jump to recruit the Pacific Northwest. And I like Mike Brey a bunch but he hasn't exactly lit it up at Notre Dame with an awful lot of resources.

Jon (NYC)

Dana, how many more years will Boeheim stay at Cuse?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:22 PM)

Jon: As long as he wants! Doesn't strike me as being terribly itchy right now and if I were a Cuse fan, I wouldn't be terribly itchy to get rid of him, either.

Danny (Chicago)

Do you follow recruiting closely in the offseason? Attend AAU tournaments?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:23 PM)

Danny: I follow it peripherally. Can't say I'm that familiar with beyond the top names. I used to attend the (now defunct) Reebok camp here in Philly and I usually make it out to Vegas as well.

Steve (IU)

One more year before Crean can get Indiana back on track?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:23 PM)

Steve: Might be a tad longer. He needs to win some of these recruiting battles to really get it going. He's got nice players. He needs a great one.

Michael (Dallas)

How bad are the Cardinals hurting now that they lost Marquis Teague to in-state rival UK? I think Cal is running Pitino out of the state...agree?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:24 PM)

Michael: Not sure he's running him out of the state but he's making it a whole lot more uncomfortable for him. This is a big get for Kentucky but a bigger loss for Louisville, no doubt.

Mark (NYC)

Dana, how do you think Lavin will do at SJU? I'm going to miss him on ESPN.

Dana O'Neil
  (4:25 PM)

mark: TBD, I'd say. It's been a while since he's been in the game recruiting wise, so that will be an adjustment. But I think he's got name cache which helps in New York and he's got a presence about him. The charisma to get things going and get the fan base energized. That all matters.

Brandon (Waukegan)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if top tier coaches switched places? Boeheim somewhere other than Cuse. K at UNC instead of Duke?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:27 PM)

Brandon: I haven't but it would be a sort of funny off-beat thing to consider.

Pat (memphis tn)

Dana, how well do you think Memphis will do with the returning players and the recruiting class they have coming in next year? Also, what grade would you give Pastner in his first year?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:28 PM)

Pat: I expect Memphis to make huge strides next year. Let's face it, they were pretty good considering all they lost this year. Really impressed with how Pastner handled the transition, the team and the recruiting class. Don't think the Tigers will be down for long.

Jim Dolezal (Nebraska)

Did today's news save the postseason NIT, CBI and CIT?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:30 PM)

Jim: It would seem that way. The NIT question was asked and answered today and the other two, so long as there is sponsorship and interest I guess survive.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear DanaWhat is it going to take for Larry Brown to take the Oregon or Rutgers job?

Dana O'Neil
  (4:31 PM)

Chioke: For fans of those schools, I hope a bunch. Man hasn't recruited college athletes in forever and is the very definition of a vagabond. I'd expect him to switch gigs in the NBA

Dana O'Neil
  (4:31 PM)

OK, folks I have to go. Apologize for the short chat but it's a crazy busy day.Go raise a glass of grape juice and toast the field of 68.
