Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Greetings from the media center inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It's a mega fight week as we get ready for Shane Mosley-Floyd Mayweather tomorrow night. It's the biggest fight of the year so far and we have much to discuss. Make sure to check out our extensive coverage on the boxing page and Fight Credential. And remember -- we have full coverage through the day on SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and live coverage of the weigh in on both networks. Let's get to it.

Hector (Phoenix)

I believe the key to this fight will be pressure. If Mosely can put pressure and jab he has a very good chance of winning. Floyd had a tough time against Zab, Oscar and JLCastillo when the above where done against Floyd. Whats your take?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

You are right. It will be up to Shane to apply pressure to throw Floyd off. If he can do that he will have a good chance to win.

Omar (Uniondale)

What ounce gloves are they using tommorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

8 ounce.

Horn (Vegas)

I really enjoyed Floyd Sr.'s chat. He is a really colorful guy. I guess some people are better read than heard if you get my drift.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Exactly.

Horn (Vegas)

Floyd seems to be angry with the media in regard to lack of opposition arguments. Also there have been questions of the entertainment value in his fights. Do you think that his anger along with the "boring" claims will intrigue Floyd to force the action more than usual?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

No, Floyd is a master at doing what he does and no matter what anyone says, he sticks the game plan, which I respect.

JEFF (LA, CA)

is nazeem's white towel waving a bad omen for this fight?i think we'll see it saturday night, when he tosses it into the ring to save shane. 10th rd.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I don't see that but anything can happen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Media center is starting to hum a little. Sugar Ray Leonard is in the house. So is Larry Merchant and Ross Greenburg.

Steve Godo (Detroit, Michigan)

How can roger mayweather be considered a better trainer than Nazim when between every round his advice to floyd is always "keep whoopin his ass" ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I don't know anyone who considers Roger a better trainer than Naazim other than the folks on Floyd's team.

riad (london)

when you ask Jack Mosley what he thought about the way Nazeem was training his son, he did not reply. What do you make of it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

He couldn't even bring himself to say Naazim's name. He just refused to give Naazim any credit for anything whatsoever. I think he's still a little stung by the fact that Shane does not want him training him any more.

Koichi (NYC)

What are your thoughts on the WBC not allowing Mexican fighters to fight in Arizona?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

They can't prevent Mexican fighters from fighting in Arizon, merely suggest it. Bless anything that keeps WBC fights out of the USA though.

John (New Jersey)

When are you gonna get your next blog up? Eight days now?!?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Not my call. I was told no blogs this week.

matt (austin tx)

Have you seen el canelo fight? how good is he?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I've seen many of his fights. Good prospect, appealing style, young, exciting. But still a bit raw.

Joshua (DC)

Why are you so bias against Mayweather? Has he done something to upset you or something? Because there is a bias tone to all your articles involving him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Why are you so biased against my articles?

Stacy (South Carolina)

Just saw you on SportsCenter at 12:40 ET. Does everyone refer to you as "Raf" or is that just Buccigross? Heard you call him "Booch" at the end there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

It's "The Raf" -- that stems from a past appearance with The Butch on SportsCenter.

Brandon (Rogers, Ar)

Great article today! Given the fact that since 2005 Floyd has only fought guys either much smaller than him or over the hill instead of fighting the best in the division - if he loses convincingly tomorrow, shouldn't he realistically be considered one of the most overrated fighters of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Whatever happens tomorrow you can't ignore what Floyd did accomplish at 130 and 135. And I give him credit for being the legit 147 champ. But it he loses to Mosley it will show perhaps that there was a reason he ducked the best guys at 147 for so long.

Drew (NJ)

15+ months is a long time. how much ware, and rust is on Mosley considering he basically has now trained for two fights since he last stepped into the ring. Not to mention that the last time he fought, our good friend Mr. Kirkland was still a free man.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

That's an important question in this fight. 15 months plus Shane's age makes you wonder, but Shane does look in great shape.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

The legendary Kieran Mulvaney has entered the press room!

Jake (Vancouver)

I know the fight is being hyped as the biggest this year but why should I spend $60+ on PPV when Mayweather is NEVER in an exciting fight plus the undercard sucks. I expect a Mayweather rout due to his amazing D and speed. Why should I buy this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I'm not here to promote that you should buy the fight. I don't care if you buy the fight.

Tony Rom (Bronx NY)

Floyd wins by decision, his quickness and superb defense won't allow Mosley to do his thing. It will prob. be a dull fight with Shane coming forward the whole time and not landing anything, ala the DLH fight.

Mike (Atlantic City, New Jersey)

Will Mosley put much weight on between the weight-in and fight night, or do you think he learned that you cannot beat Floyd by just trying to over power him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I think Shane will put on more than Floyd but nothing crazy.

Justin (ATL)

Danno just saw you on sportscenter a few minutes ago. No shout out to the freaks? Maybe at the weigh in tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

We'll see what we can do but that's tough on a show like that. Brian Kenny and I will be covering the weigh in live and Jaime Mota will interview both fighters after they come off the scales to also be used in the coverage.

Pat (Boston)

Hey Dan - when talking about Shane's losses (winky, vernon, cotto) How do you think Floyd would've done?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Vernon would have given Floyd problems at 147 because of his jab, reach and height. Winky would have beaten Floyd at 154. The Cotto who faced Shane would have given Floyd a lot of problems but I think Floyd would have outpointed him.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan what is the exact purse split this week 70-30? Floyd gets 22 mil and shane gets 6? Thats not right to me

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Shane admits he didn't make the best deal. Also, both will get a lot more off the PPV profits.

Brooks (Cleveland)

Props on a nice article Dan. . . I think a realistic summary of where floyd stands. Can't wait for tomorrow . . .

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Thank you. Just keepin' it real.

Leo (New York)

Besides you, how many jouralists are in Vegas covering this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I don't know how many exactly but it's a lot. Certainly a major turnout of media from all over the world. I was interviewed by a Belgian TV station yesterday. There are reporters from England, Mexico, all over the US. It's a big fight.

jjdrum_005 (Little Rock AR)

I have seen quite a few Floyd Mayweather fights and most of them say the same thing "This is his toughest fight" and then he easy outpoints the guy. What will be said if Floyd convincingly outpoints Mosley? Does He go back to #1 PFP?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

It depends on how the fight goes but I would probably not drop Manny from 1 just because Floyd wins. Manny just won his fight and basically shut out Clottey. He's No. 1 until further notice.

Chris (Tempe)

Dan, What's this I hear about Amir Khan having visa issues and his fight with Malignaggi in jeopardy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

He's getting his papers worked out, but it's no big deal.

Curly Neal (Harlem, NY)

Floyd is the greatest boxer of all-time just like I am the greatest basketball player of all-time! No disrespect to Michael, Magic and Larry, but their teams lost games EVERY year. My Globetrotters NEVER lost! Don't be jealous of me and Floyd because we made everyone look so foolish!

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

That is legendary.

Jamie (Phoenix, AZ)

Danatar, What is the approximate time that Mosley and Mayweather are scheduled to enter the ring Saturday Night? Can't find it listed on the net anywhere.WBC = Why Be Credible?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Probably around between 11 and 11:20 ET -- just like every other HBO PPV. Why this same question for every PPV? It's always the same.

colaboy (Pensacola,FL)

Do you think Roy Jones is still a Hall of Famer

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Do you think the sun will rise tomorrow?

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

Ok, how 'bout the questions all the freaks want answered, is Ellerbe paying up and taking you out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

LOL. Not yet although I did sit with Leonard at the media dinner last night and we had a nice time.

Bryant (Pitt)

DTM is there something I missed when Floyd spoke? Seems he answers every question with 'Like I said before'...I must have missed that enlightning speech

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Like I said before, I have no idea why he does that every time he speaks.

nuke (louisville)

What do you think of the undercard this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Sucks.

John, Austin [via mobile]

Curley Neal, Greatest chat comment ever!!! Funny, brilliant, and appropriate, Awesome!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I'm still laughing about that.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

What time is the weigh-in today?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

3:10ish PT / 6:10ish ET.

Alex (Switzerland)

If Shane wins, what are the odds that Floyd claims Balco during post - fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Like I said before, considering both guys have already past something like 10 or 11 random drug tests -- blood and urine -- I doubt it.

Randy (Cincinnati, OH)

at Floyd's fights, Leonard Ellerbe is in his corner. What's his boxing background? was he a trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Leonard was very tight with Jeff Mayweather and Jeff asked him to work with Floyd early in his career as a strength coach which he did and it has developed from there.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Did you catch the Hasegawa/Montiel fight, Dan? What a great win for Montiel.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Saw the result, will watch it later.

Alex (Switzerland)

DTM, in all your greatness, do you refuse to chat with anyone outside of the USA :))

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Like I said before, no.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,The majority of the "Who's gonna win?" polls are going with Floyd by decision. However I get the sense by reading various journalist's opinions that their hearts say otherwise. Are a lot of the media folks hoping Shane wins while publicly picking Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Worst (Tagline Ever) [via mobile]

So Dan, Who r u picking?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Mayweather W12.

Steve (Hartford)

Dan your predictions on ppv buys?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I think 1.5 million range is very possible.

Aaron (MA)

I know that you won't vote for him, but do you think John Ruiz will someday be inducted into the IBHOF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

No way.

Bob Arum Fan (The Top Rank Clubhouse)

Hey Dan when is Bob gonna come host the chat again like he did that one time? You're letting us Arum fans down.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Don't think I'll see Bob here in a Golden Boy media center this week.

Edubb (Sac)

Dan, Say Mosely wins and wants to fight Pac next, is there any way he can postpone the rematch clause? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I dont believe so unless Floyd's declines to pick up the option.

Andy (Ventura)

What's the atmosphere like in Vegas, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Good and really picking up. I arrived at the arena at about 7:50 am ET to get ready for some TV hits on the early East Coast SportsCenters and there were already a bunch of people lined up so they get the prime spots for the weigh in this afternoon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

By the way Freaks -- had a chance to talk to Ricky Hatton at length last night. He's here for the fight. And he confirms -- there is indeed still only one Ricky Hatton. And this is true -- we sang the song a couple of times together.

Jerry (LA)

I have never wished for a fighter to lose more than Mayweather just to see his gums shut. 40-1 would be epic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Three others who were 40-0 and then lost: SRR, Trinidad and Foreman.

Markus (OKC)

Why do you hate Floyd?1?!? By everything you write and say, you dog him a lot!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

One other thing Freaks -- Marquez-Diaz 2 will be formally announced tomorrow at a press conference here in the media center. Ran into JMM before the chat and he was in great spirits and excited for the fight. He is picking Shane tomorrow.

Richard Schaefer (MGM Grand)

LOL!!!!!! 1.5 million!!!! TRy 3 Million Danny

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Does the atmosphere at the fight rival the excitement of other big fights? And do you think the crowd at the fight will be split 50/50 or will Shane get the underdog vote?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

The atosphere and energy isn't yet in the top echelon of big Vegas fights I have covered. But it is good. Just nothing overwhelming like it was for fights like Oscar-Pacquiao, Pacquiao-Cotto, Mayweather-Hatton, etc... I think both fighters will have fans and it will be split.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Do you know if the movie ticket sales for Mayweather/Mosley affect the final PPV numbers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

They have nothing to do with each other. The movie money is considered closed circuit revenue.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

Have there been sleepless nights this week as you conjure up a plan for arranging a chat that will break the record?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

No. The only reason for sleepless nights this week was because I hung out way too late at the club last night knowing I had to be in the arena at 7:50 am this morning. I'm paying for it right now.

Tom (UK)

Will Ruiz make the shortlist for HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Not even the long, long, long list.

Jonathan (Cleveland via Scotland)

Does Floyd consider his defeats on 'Dancing with the stars' a blow to his 'legacy'?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Like I said before, pay the man, Shirley!

Jim (DC)

Is Ricky Hatton say if he will fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Ricky said he had taken a vacation to Australia. When he came home he spent a couple of weeks in the gym to see if he had the desire to do it again. He said he didn't feel it and didn't have plans to fight. But he said he wasn't announcing a retirement because if he got the hunger back he might fight. But he didn't think he would. Based on that conversation with Ricky last night and the fact that it will be a year since his last fight coming up in a week or so, I will remove him from the rankings sometime this month. But Ricky seemed happy and in good spirits, which was nice to see. One thing that was cool was he said that he had never been around a big Vegas fight he wasn't in, so he was looking forward to hanging out and taking it all in.

George (Fontana, CA)

Dan, are you going to see Robert The Ghost Guerrero tonight? I wish him and his family the best.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I am hoping to get over there if I am still awake.

Nick (South Dakota)

when was the last time you directly interviewed Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Wednesday of this week.

Richard (Kenadll Park)

Am I the only one imagining Dan at the club drinking and singing with Ricky Hatton? There's ONLY ONE Dan Rafael!

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Like I said before, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Mike (Atlantic City, New Jersey)

Why does Floyd act like Shane is broke when Floyd was in debt until after the fight with JMM? It is clear that Shane has more money then Floyd.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I'm a boxing writer, not an accountant.

Bruce (RI)

Dan, People don't have to pay $60 for the fight, here is the $30 rebate details... http://cervezatecate.com/conditions_en.html

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Freaks, a press conference is about to start here in the media center with Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns to talk about tomorrow's fight. Should be cool to listen in. Afterward, Richard Schaefer said he'd try to come down to my table for a few minutes and take a few questions from the Freaks. He saw Arum in the chat a couple of weeks ago and wants to alos join in our Freak fun, so stay tuned for that shortly.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Kieran is going to blog about what SRL and Hitman have to say about this fight.

Earn (Bay Area)

Have you ever watched a fight at the Movie theaters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Nope.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

By the way -- it's great to see SRL and Tommy right in front of me together on the dais. Just awesome. Ray is speaking and gives Floyd the edge. But he says Shane is a guy who can penetrate Floyd's defense.

Alex (Louisville)

BUY or SELL, Floyd is broke 5 years after he retires?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Why so long?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Tommy is now speaking. He says Floyd will come out and try to dominate early by tmoving and that Mayweather will do well with that style but Shane will try to test him and see how well he takes a shot. He said we have not seen Floyd do that yet -- take a big shot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

The question is how would Floyd do against Ray or Tommy. Tommy says Floyd would be too small for both of them. Now Tommy and Ray are pretending to argue. This is great. Now Ray says Tommy against Mayweather -- Hearns would win. He said, "I don't think anyone could beat Tommy Hearns except for me." Now Hearns is saying he whupped Ray in the rematch. This is hilarious. Ray just admitted Tommy beat him in the rematch.

darryl p (indianapolis)

any news on zab judah vs alexander fight? is it gonna get done?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Saw Zab last night. He said he's figting in August in Newark, N.J., in a fight his company is going to promote. Whether it comes off? Who knows.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Tommy just said he wants to fight Ray again right now and he really wants to "knock his butt out." They having a good time together up there. This is all in fun and everyone in here -- it's crowded now -- is really enjoying this. Tommy just said he is proud to know Ray and they brought the best out of each other.

jonathan (LA)

no mention of the love child yet? someone who attended the fight last week told me he looks too small for 154. any chance he can still make 147?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I think he's a 154 and that's it. He's not going back to 147.

dave (detroit)

i'm at work, but i wish i could see the press conference. is it streaming anywhere online?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Unfortunately, no. Ray is now talking and saying he thinks tomorrow's fight will live up to expectations.

Bryant (Pitt)

DAN did you say Ray just ate a sclice of humble pie? Im going ice skating in HelL now

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Yup.

John (ATL GA)

if you had to guess...how much did Hatton weigh when u saw him

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I would say 180ish.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan is now doing Play-by-play. Is there anything that he can't do???

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

A few things.

Leo (Charlotte)

How long do you think Berto will be on the shelf with his injury?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Not too long. It won't mess up a fight for him late in the year.

Dan's Enter Key (The Keyboard)

Please no more!

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Sorry, that was a technical issue.

J. R (PR)

dan what do you think about a fight between winky wright vs joshua clottey and the winner gets corey spinks?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I think I would rather listen to Floyd say he is the greatest ever. For 24 hours straight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Ray is talking about how it bothers him that there is no American heavyweight champion.

Jerry (NYC)

D$! Please settle a dispute between me and my friends! What is the typical glove weight for heavyweight bouts??

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

10 ounces for heavyweights.

Matt (Boston)

Roger Mayweather vs. Floyd Senior in their day, who wins that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Roger.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan with no opponent for Alexander might we see him move up in weight for maybe a Berto match? Im praying for it

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

That won't happen, at least this year.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

If Winky Wright fought Roy Jones Jr., would that be the first 0-0 split in boxing purse history?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

ESPN 12 round analysis states Mayweather has the better corner. I nearly fell off my chair.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I don't agree with that.

Brandon (Rogers, Ar)

So Zab gets in the ring after Alexander's ko of Urango, calls him out, and doesn't make the fight...? Zab is a joke!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Zab doesn't want to have to sign with King to get the fight. I can't blame him for that.

Dan (Miami)

Any update on Klitschko-Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Nothing specific, although the meeting between Adam Booth, Shelly Finkel and Richard Schaefer won't happen this weekend because Adam is not coming in -- his fighter who was supposed to be on the undercard was injured and not fighting, so I am told Adam is not coming.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ): Dan is now doing Play-by-play. Is there anything that he can't do???Yes, I handle all plumbing repairs.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Mrs. D$ has spoken.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

The press conference is over and Ray and Tommy are posing together. Great scene here.

mitchel Burdette (houston)

Hey Dan! Sorry I'm late. Did you happen to catch Yuri Foreman on Jimmy Kimmel? Yuri seems like a good guy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Yuri is a good guy. I didn't see it but I had set my DVR for it before I flew out here the other day (had the upgrade).

Jake (Arl Hts, IL)

Danny Boy,What do you think was the last Big PPV that was actually an awesome fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

It's been awhile.

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

Another reason to hate the WBC (World's Biggest Cowards)...I just read an article that the WBC will ban mexican fighters from fighting in the state of Arizona in protest to the new illegal immigration law. So now they think they're political experts!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

The WBC is a joke and a disgrace.

Steve (Hartford )

Cotto/Margarito was pretty awesome

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

You are right and that wasn't that long ago.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Richard Schaefer has joined us and will take a few questions from the Freaks, so send 'em in and be nice.

James (PA)

Who wins at middleweight Hearns or Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Hopkins.

Nick (South Dakota)

Hey Richard, prediction on # of ppv buys?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

He says that based on early indications from yesterday and today that they are on track to break thte 2 million mark.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Richard, what are the plans or long term plans of getting fights back on network television? Is it a pipe dream or is it something you can actually see happening?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

He says that the first step was bringing it back to Spanish language network Telefutura tonight. They keep working on sponsors to help bring it back. He says they work on that all the timet and that he has now doubt it will happen.

Earn (bAY aREA)

Richard, Will Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero get the winner of JM Marquez and Juan Diaz and if so any chance that takes place in San Jose,Ca.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

He says absolutely. He said the Ghost asked him for that fight and that is possible. He added that San Jose would be a perfect place for that fight.

Palo (Highlands)

Richard, Do you see Hopkins getting a chance to fight Bute while the Super Six tournament is going on? Have any talks started?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Richard says he needs to see what Bernard wants to do but Bute's name has come up in the past and he has talked to Bute's promoter about a potential fight. Bute is going to fight this summer in Romania (his home country) but will be available in the late fall for a fight on HBO.

Eric (DC)

Richard - when will we see a PPV with a decent undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

He says tomorrow night. I just punched him in the shoulder. Seriously, he says the Alvarez is an interesting fight and a big step up for him. He says Canelo has a chance to be a star. For the July 31 ppv (Marquez-Diaz II), he said he promises to consult with me on the undercard and wants to put together a "Freak Card." (I told him way to kiss ass).

R! (Yay Area)

Schaefer, why is Marquez vs Diaz on PPV??? It was a great event on regular HBO from Texas, made it that much better

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

He says sometimes as a promoter you are forced to do certain fights on PPV. Ultimately, HBO picks which fights it wants to have live on HBO which then forces other fights to PPV. He feels he has an obligation to the fighters to give them big fights and sometimes they have to use the PPV outlet and this is one of the situations.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Hey Richard.. If Floyd wins, how excited are you to get non-stop migrane headaches for weeks trying to get Floyd to agree to a deal with Pacquio?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

He says he already has a extra supply of extra-strength migrane pills that he will start taking on his Sunday morning drive back to Los Angeles. Seriously, he says he will do whatever he can to get the biggest fights done and that if Floyd wins, he knows the world wants to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao. He said he will give it his best effort to get the fight done -- the fight the world wants to see.

Alec (Nashville)

Richard Schaefer should be a politician with all that garbage he just spewed.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

He's laughing at that and reminded me he is Swiss and neutral.

Cruz (Portland, Or)

Hey Richard how was it dealing with the USADA? and will Golden Boy bring them on board for future fights or was this a one time deal? (because of Floyd)

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

He said it was great to work with USADA. He has talked to both fighters and that it was not intrusive. He hopes that one of the state commissions will take the ball now and push to introduce randomn blood testing. He says that it is time to make that standard in boxing.

Joe (PA)

Richard, Who R U Picking?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

He says and I quote, "I think Shane Mosley will pull it off."

psycho (LaLaLand)

richard-how damaged is the relation between GB and top rank when it will come to hosting a big fight between your fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

He said they went through a period we all call the cold war and in the end common business sense prevailed. He said he believes that Top Rank and GB both have a responsibility to the sport and fight fans to work together and have the best fight the best.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Why isn't golden boy doing more to advance the Ring Belt as the true world championship, or at least petitioning for a new ranking system to eliminate the parasitic alphabet organizations ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Richard and I have talked about that extensively in recent times, even last night. He says he doesn't know if Ring is the answer but he realizes all the organizations are holding the sport back. He thinks what it will take is for some of the promoters, like Top Rank and GB, get together and tackle the problem together. He thinks an unbiased panel consiting of the leading the boxing experts and have them vote on a transparent ranking system without fees involved so any perception of corruption would be eliminated. That would be a big step to help boxing.

Slick Money (NY)

Who came up with "Who R U Picking?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

He said it was his Golden Boy team and HBO talked about marketing strategies and names for the fight and the discussion turned to how evenly matched the fight was and who they were picking. They stumbled on it and they felt it was a title that offered good activation opportunities in getting America talking about the fight and taking a position. It was a good way to make it an interactive fight. He said more than a million people have cast their votes on who they were picking online. He said Saturday will be like election night when the result will be known.

darryl p (indianapolis)

what's up with chris john?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Was told yesterday by his adviser that he suffered a shoulder injury and his May fight in Bali is postponed. Richard says as his US promoter, GB would like to bring him back later this year in the US in a big fight.

dave (detroit)

Richard, what are the specifics of the rematch clause in the fight? If Shane wins, how soon does the rematch have to take place and is he obligated to fight Floyd in his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

He says he doesn't want to discuss that. He said there is a confidentiality clause in the contract. I'll beat it out of him later.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Richard, will we see a Haye-Klitschko fight this year??

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

He said the conversations between the sides have started and he is told that is the fight that both guys want. Some of the issues to be ironed out is the split and the site. Both sides feel strongly that the fight should be in their respecitive country -- England for Haye, Germany for Klitschko. He said HBO is very interested in the fight.

Daniel.K (Pluto)

Will Roach or Pacman be at the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Neither will be here.

Randy (Milwaukee)

If Richard can put together a panel of boxing experts to put together a transparent ranking system without fees involved, I'll love him forever.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

I will too.

Richard (NYC )

Guys, any rumors on how Floyd is going to enter the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Richard said he knows what the entrance will be and he promises it will be spectacular. He's not giving any hints.

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Richard said he knows what the entrance will be and he promises it will be spectacular. He's not giving any hints.

James (Athens, GA)

Richard, do you need an intern this summer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Richard said he knows what the entrance will be and he promises it will be spectacular. He's not giving any hints.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

He says they do use summer interns. Go to the GB Web site and email your information -- resume and the like.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Will James Kirkland fight in 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I am breaking the no James Kirkland mentions in the chat so Richard can answer. He said the way it looks, he will be in a halfway house in July and they are planning to have him fight in the early fall in a comeback fight and then have him ready to fight any of the top 154s in late 2010 or early 2011.

Marc (10 feet to the left)

What kind of undercard is bandies about for Diaz-Marquez II

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

One fighter he wants to bring back is Winky Wright against possibly Matthew Macklin (European champion). He also wants to put on prospect Frankie Gomez, who also fights tomorrow and also Saul Alvarez, pending the outcome Saturday. Another possibility is Robert Guerrero.

mike (baltimore)

Hey richard, any idea what you have planned for the next 6 months for danny jacobs? I feel like he's ready for a top middleweight after he blows out astorga

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

He fights May 15 and then after that, they will start talking to the handlers of Sebastian Zsbik, the WBC's interim titleholder at 160. He would like to have him back on HBO on BAD in the second half of the year. Kery Davis of HBO is also sitting right here and nodding his head that he would like to do that as well.

Jordan (Newfoundland, Canada)

Richard, (thanks for taking our questions) how are things between GBP and BHop? All better now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

He said he hasn't talked to Bernard in a couple of weeks but will see him this weekend in Vegas.

Jackson (IA)

Kirkland-Angulo!! Kirkland-Angulo!! Kirkland-Angulo!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Hopefully, someday. Richard is saying he LOVES the fight, where do we sign. Kery is also excited about trying to put that together.

Jason (KCMO)

Richard and Dan, Even though this fight has the potential to be a great fight, do you guys find yourselves (every so often) lookin past this fight to say umm the biggest superfight ever.......Mayweather vs Pacquiao. Also do you guys think the fight will ever happen? (with either a floyd win or loss)

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

For me, I say no. I am focused on covering this fight this week. I'll think more about that next week if Floyd wins tomorrow. Richard said he will focus on what's next Sunday morning.

Kevin (Jersey)

Richard, have you ever tried sparring with Oscar or Shane?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

No, he hasn't. But he did joke around with Oscar to give him a chance and he gave Richard a pair of trunks that he signed saying he would fight him at 147 but he would have to lose some weight.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Was there any fighter that Golden Boy had the chance to sign and passed that he wished he could back and sign them?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Great question. He said he doesn't mean to sound pompous but he can't think of any free agent they wanted that they didn't get. The only one that comes to mind is Pacquiao, but we all know how that went.

Nick (Queens, NY)

Dan, who picks the questions when you have a guest? You or the guest?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

I pick the questions in consulation with the guest. But to tell you the truth when I have had guests they are basically willing to answer anything within reason. Richard and Bob are both great about it.

Ed (Portland OR)

Suggestion for Richard, Guerrero vs Linares on the undercard of JMM/Diaz!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Duly noted. He said good idea and he would be interested in trying to make the fight. That is what he calls a fight for a "Freak Card."

Feliciano (Austin)

Who does Oscar think will tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Oscar was clear from the beginning -- Shane. Richard said that Oscar said Shane by knockout.

James (Athens, GA)

Who does Richard want to put Amir Khan with after he blasts Paulie the Parrot?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

He said potential opponent is the winner of the undercard fight between Nate Campbell and Victor Ortiz. He also said a fight Amir wants is the winner Marquez-Diaz.

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Richard also said he has talked to Marquez and Marquez is interested because he wants to be the first Mexican to win titles in four divisions.

Michael (New Jersey)

Who is calling the fight on the PPV tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Lampley, Merchant and Emanuel.

Steve (NYC)

Would Richard do a stadium show?

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

He says absolutely. They have done one -- De La Hoya-Forbes was a 30,000-seat soccer stadium. He is very open to doing another stadium fight.

Freak (The Chat)

Ask Richard to slap his knee 3 times during the weigh in and us freaks will take that as "Hello freaks"

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

He says OK.

Mario (San Antonio)

With a Mosley win how big will the rematch become? Will it possibly eclipse the first fight, what are your thoughts on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

I think it would be huge, but it would depend on the circumstances how Shane would win the first fight.

Nick (Queens, NY)

Richard, what are your thoughts on Floyd not wanting to pony up the fees to put the belt on the line? Do you think this is a step in the right direction to minimize the importance of the alphabet titles?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Richard says that everyone has the right spend their money how they wish and that he repsects Floyd's decision. But he also sees that boxing is a sport of champions and that whether we like it or not belts have importance.

Mario C. (San Antonio)

Could heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder be a future contender and someone you may have interest in?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Shelly Finkel, his manager, has just sat down with us. And Shelly reminds us that Deontay fights tonight on the Telefutura undercard. I think Deontay has all kinds of physical attributes to be something important. But he has a LOT of work to do.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Winky Wright on a "Freak card"? Hey Richard, "What R U Smoking"?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

LOL! (He prefers cigars).

Aaron (Fargo ND)

Great question by Nick ... Greater answer by Richard.

R! (Yay Area)

Will see the Fight Night Club in other cities besides LA? Be nice if it came up here to San Francisco! Historical fight town

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

AEG, which is GB's partner and owner of Staples Center and Club Nokia, has venues all over the place and wants to do shows elsewhere. They are talking about doing those kind of shows at one of its places in New York and London.

Steve (NYC)

Would Golden Boy ever sell DVDs or expand their brand into other marketing stuff?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

He said they are working on that and that you can expect to see DVDs of their library of fights in the next three months (Breaking news?) He said they are also in discussion with a major retailer to introduce a GB clothing line. Good question.

Greg (Nj)

Hey Richard, I'm confused bc Mayweather always talks about his promotional company. Do you guys represent him fully?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

Floyd is under contract to Mayweather Promotions and Richard says GB assists Mayweather Promotions in the staging of his fights and working with some of their other fighters.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Mr. Schaefer, Outside of Oscar, who are some of your all-time favorite fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

Sugar Ray Leonard is one. Ali, who he grew up watching as a kid. From the more present time, Marco Antonio Barrera, Mosley and Julio Cesar Chavez -- SENIOR!

Louie (Juarez)

Richard, you're awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

He's blushing.

Steve (Hawaii)

Tell Richard that I really admire his diplomacy skills in this complex business of boxing. The results speak for itself.

Joe (RI)

If Oscar picked Shane, Floyd will win easy. DLH is the kiss of Death for fight picks.

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

That is what I said to him a few minutes ago when I saw that question.

Aaron (Hartford)

Who are the other fighters under May Promotions ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

They have Cornelius Lock, Said Oulai and Jessie Vargas.

Chris D. (Chicago)

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

He said there a few people in the watch biz.

Mario C. (San Antonio)

I'll leave you with this true story: I had a dream about 2 months ago and in it Floyd knocked Shane out in the 1st round and everyone in the building went silent including me. That woke me up do either one of you guys view that as a realistic possibility, if so what kind of and effect would that have on the welterweight/P4P rankings? Please answer.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

I'll let you know if it happens.

Brandon (Rogers, Ar)

Mosley TKO 9

FightFan (WI)

This fight has given Nazeem a much bigger profile than ever. I don't know much about him. Is he a trainer on the rise or has he already considered a top trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

Naazim has been a known trainer for a long time but not to the public like he is now because of this fight. But he has worked in the Philly gyms for many years and trained Bernard Hopkins for a long time. When Bouie Fisher was BHop's trainer for so many years, Naazim was the assistant but the guy in the ring with BHop doing the is mittwork. He is a very respected trainer among boxing insiders.

jfs (glendale, ca)
