Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello to all and welcome to another Wednesday fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric, I am your host, and after I thank you in advance for showing up, I'll say let's get started...

Frankie Liriano (Minnesota)

Have I returned to must-own/must-start status? What are my projections for the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Well, I will stop short of projecting a Cy Young award, but with Liriano's slider sliding properly, this is not a fluke. He's uber-talented and someone I would still be buying, if his owner was selling. I'll cautiously project 15 wins and a 2.75 ERA...

Charles (NJ)

Are you holding onto Jason Kubel? Or time to drop him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I'll wait for Kubel. He's a legit 30-100 guy and for some reason is off to a brutal start, but I don't think the Twins are worried, so neither should we. If anyone is about to lose playing time, it's Delmon Young. Of course, if Justin Morneau's back is an issue, then that opens up opportunity for Jim Thome right there.

Frank (Omaha, NE)

Which RP would you rather have: Francisco, Jim Johnson, Joel Zumaya?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I'd say Francisco, and it's not real close. It's clear Johnson is either not the closer in Baltimore or they don't want him to be. Alfredo Simon, who last saved a game in the minors in 2005, closed Tuesday. Stunning. Zumaya is not a closer, not even close with Valverde there. And in Texas it's clear Neftali Feliz isn't perfect. I think Francisco either has the job back or is close.

Shaun Marcum (Toronto)

Am I the real deal or is this just a hot start? I pitched pretty well against Boston don't ya think?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

See Cain, Matt. I see Marcum having a really good season, but he might not win 10 games...

Dave (Boston)

What is up with Hoffman?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Other than the home run rate? What a shocking start for his season. Trevor Hoffman has already allowed more runs this season than all of 2009! And with 5 HR allowed in 8 innings, it's like watching last year's Kevin Gregg pitch. Ug-ly. I think the Brewers might have to give him some less critical innings to get himself well, but unless he's hurt, be patient. As for next in line, I think it's Carlos Villanueva, not LaTroy Hawkins.

Charles (NJ)

Will Lidge immediately start closing games for the Phillies?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Chollie Manuel claims he won't right away, but it's not like Ryan Madson is the next Mo Rivera... it shouldn't be long.

jay (nyc)

ETA on posey and carlos santana?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I could see as early as June for both young catchers, and as late as September as well. I don't know how the Giants could play him regularly, not with Bengie Molina around, but it's certainly possible. And Santana shouldn't be rushed as the Tribe lose their 90 games. Who would I choose, if each came up the same June 1st: Santana.

Steve (NY)

You see Ray Rice as a top 5 pick next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Football!!! Yes, I have him at precisely No. 4. Even if he sees fewer carries, he still catches the ball, scores the touchdowns.. .all is well. I think football is under way in these parts... have at it!

Roberto (Panama City, FL)

Erik, for the season please rank:Clay Bucholz, Jake Peavy, Brad Penny, JA Happ.

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

I will say Peavy, Buchholz, Penny and then Happ. Peavy will get things going. He's a strikeout pitcher, I don't want to give up yet. Penny has been awesome, but Buchholz has that ability as well. And Happ is on the DL, and I have concerns even when healthy in terms of WHIP and probably health.

Phil (Bethlehem, PA)

At what point should I start worrying about start limits? I've got 29 already (on pace for over 218) and wondering if I should start Peavy or Correia today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I don't worry in April, but then again I don't overdo things when I know I have limits.

alex (chicago)

in a vacuum would you trade cano and granderson for lincy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

For Lincecum... if I needed pitching, absolutely.

P.D. (Little Rock)

Although Lidge is available in my league, does his ability to torpedo my ERA make him too dangerous to own in a Head-to-Head League?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I think a lot of pitchers can torpedo an ERA. Honestly, I think Lidge will be fine... ERA around 3.50 this season, 25 saves.

Jay (LA)

Do you think the Royals bench Gordon when Getz comes back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

No, but I'm hearing Gordon could get sent to the minor leagues, which is better but for fantasy owners, about the same. Can you say ... bust?

Nick (Atlanta)

Do you think Andrew McCutchen has a chance to finish in the top 20 OFs this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I think he has more than a chance... he's running wild and the power is legit. I almost expect he'll be a top-20 OF now.

Mike (DC)

Hunter Pence? Still hope? Would you drop him for Guillen or will Guillen come back to earth?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Yes, still hope! It's April! Jose Guillen is legit, too, but I would hold on to Pence. That's a 25-homer guy with speed and average.

Andrew (Tampa)

Javier Vazquez was dropped in my league. I gotta beleive he is worth a roster spot...isn't he? I just put Brett Anderson on DL and can add Vazquez or Joe Blanton. What u think?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Yes, add Vazquez fast. I laugh at those who think Vazquez is going to be this awful all season long. He might have an ERA around 4, but the Ks will be there, he'll win 13-15, and it's wise to get him now.

Mike (Philly)

Who would you rather have for the rest of the year Vazquez or Pelfrey?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Vazquez. Easily. But I am buying that Pelfrey can do what he did two seasons ago... but at its simplest term, you sell high.

Cedric (GA)

With Brett Anderson now out 4-6 weeks, would you try to get him from an owner who is hit hard with SP injuries? What is his new current value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I would try to get him, but probably wait for a positive MRI result today first. Anderson can still make 25 starts and make them very, very good.

Danny (Tulsa)

Cliff Lee is scheduled to return on Friday. Do you think he quickly returns to being dominant?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I wouldn't assume dominant, but a 15-game winner with 175 strikeouts, oh yeah.

Justin Verlander (Detroit)

Last chance to buy low on me, right EK? What do you think I'm worth right now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Verlander went 5-0 last May. Buy now....because the next time he pitches, it will be too late.

Randy (No Winserville)

I got Cain, Marcum and Greinke. Can you punt wins ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Sorry, but yeah. I was not rooting for Greinke's bullpen to blow that win Tuesday, but it sure fit right in to the blog I wrote. Greinke's awesome... should be better than those Cain years... but 10 wins might be tough.

Jeff (WV)

Eric, loved your thoughts on the Baseball Today podcast about Howard...anyway here is my question:In a league that counts Ks for hitters do you think I would be getting enough if I traded David Wright and Alexei Ramirez for Furcal and Jonathan Sanchez....I would replace Wright with Wiggington...your advice is greatly appreciated!

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I'm really starting to lose faith in Wright (and already have in Alexei), but still I wouldn't make this deal. You can't depend on Wigginton to produce like this all season, and I don't trust Furcal to keep up this SB pace. At least Wright will run a ton.

Ryan (New York)

Do you think Kyle Blanks will end up back in the minors?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

No, I don't, but I also can't say I'd disagree with those dropping him in 10-team leagues. Just too many good outfielders playing well for a guy like him to be owned... that said, will he hit 25 home runs? Probably.

pat (boston, ma)

Who will be more valuable the rest of the season: billy wagner or matt lindstrom?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I think it's Wagner, but the Braves also seem on the verge of throwing their season away. Still, Lindstrom is not a great closer... he's doing fine, but Wagner is better, and both should get 30 save chances.

Jake (VA Beach)

Would you trade Beckett for Wandy if you could?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

No, I don't think I would. Look at Beckett's month by month splits a year ago... he was fine. It just takes him longer...

Glenn (Providence)

Do you think the absence of Brian Roberts in the lineup is having an effect on the lack of production by Markakis and Jones. They are KILLING me right now.

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

No, I do not think it has played any role at all. Markakis wasn't hitting for power last season either. And Jones did nothing after the break. It's a disappointing lineup, and when Roberts gets back it doesn't mean much for Jones or Markakis.

Billy Mays (Tampa, FL)

Big Z CARLOS ZAMBRANO was dropped in my league and I grabbed him off waivers...the K rate is excellent and take out that one bad start wouldn't you say we have a top 30 starter once he returns to rotation EK?????????

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I agree, buy low on Zambrano. Should be back in the rotation in a matter of weeks.

Sam (Boston)

Does Cole bounce back with a nice outing today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I couldn't be less optimistic. OK, I could, like if Juan Castro was the starting pitcher, but let's just say I'm not a big Hamels fan. And how can he win with Lincecum starting? Sweep!

Steve (NJ)

is CJ Wilson for real? whats he gotta do to be a top 50 guy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Well, he's gotta make about 15 starts and keep striking hitters out, and even then, it would be tough to regard him as a top-50 player... top-50 pitcher sure. The concern is with health.

Jeff's Girlfriend (Tinton Falls)

Please tell Jeff to pick up Chacin and drop Dave Bush...and tell him why Chacin will do well in COL. Thank you.

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Honestly, I wouldn't own either in a 10-team league, but I have just as much confidence that Chacin emerges that I do Bush being ownable.

Doug (Boston)

EK, David Wright is htting for some power, running, and has 8 hits over his last three games, counting today. I know he's not setting the world on fire, but losing faith?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Power? Not really... strikeouts are plentiful though. I'll say this on Wright... I don't know if he will hit 20 home runs. He'll run, he'll hit, but I am starting to doubt the power.

Jared (Springfield, MO)

Is BRANDON WEBB WORTH A ROSTER SPOT?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I don't think so.

shawnn (london)

when do you see brett wallace getting a chance?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Overbay is finally starting to hit, so I would say not anytime soon... July maybe?

Sanjay (New York City)

Olivo is now the full-time backstop in Colorado. What do you expect from him going forward and relative to Yadier Molina?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Power vs. batting average. Olivo hit 23 home runs a season ago.. he's legit. Yadi can hit .300 with 10 homers... different players.

Dimitri (Brooklyn NY)

Who would you rather have as a MI? Kelly Johnson, Polanco, McGehee

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Big fan of all of them... Polanco could win a batting title... McGehee could hit 20 homers. Depends on need...in a vaccuum Polanco.

Kevin (Charlotte)

Does Smoak keep the job for the rest of the year? What do the Rangers do with Davis, trade him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

He keeps the job if he hits. So far he isn't hitting, but it's way too early to say.

dave (Boston, MA)

Do you see cantu keeping his current pace or should I expect a drop off?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Well, I could see 110-120 RBIs, but his pace of 162 RBIs.. no.

JD (Southie)

Eric,Is Max Ramirez worth grabbing in a AL only keeper league? Will he split time with Treanor?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I want to say add him, but it doesn't appear at all that the Rangers think Max can play regularly. Looks like Mr. Misty May is the regular catcher (Matt Treanor) and Saltalamacchia could return in a week or so.

Gavin (Berkshire County)

More likely scenario: BJ hits 35 HR or Justin hits 35 HR in 2010?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Justin, easily... But BJ hits 20.

Richard (New York)

Eric, any insight on Eric Young Jr.? He's starting 2 days in a row now. Does he have any hope of winning the 2B over the underwhelming Clint Barmes?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Absolutely could, but I'd be more concerned by the errors than how Young hits.

Wilson (San Fran)

Eric, Porcello sucks so far. Can he turn it around?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

He did very well last May... I am concerned, but it's too early to give up on arm that good.

kevin (atl)

over/under aramis 30 hrs 100 rbi?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Under and under... underfortunately...

Frank (NY)

Why dont the Reds make Ryan Hanigan their starting catcher? He seems like he could make some noise if given the chance.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

He sure can get on base... but there's really no power there.

Jason (LA, CA)

Can't Buster Posey play 1B and spell Bengie Molina?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I think people simply assume Posey will hit in the bigs, but I don't.... at first base his bat plays well.

Jay (London)

What are you doing with Nate McClouth...in a weekly league keep him on bench until he starts to produce? I have Blanks in there in place of him right now

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Well, I wouldn't try to use either of them... in that case I'd look at matchups.

Sanjay (New York City)

EK - follow-up to the Hamels question, do you expect the up-and-down performance we saw from him in April to continue for the rest of the season? Any chance he regains his 2008 or even close to it?TIA.

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I have little confidence that Hamels will duplicate his 2008... but even last season there was value there.

Dan (NY)

What do you think of Wade Leblanc?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I'd start him when he pitches at Petco Park, but I can't say I trust him yet for other places. His new cutter seems to be working on right-handed hitters....

Riles (Denver)

David Wright: over/under 150 strikeouts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Well, I ask you this, does it matter? Under.

Andy (San Diego)

Eric,Please settle an argument, does luck factor more into fantasy baseball or fantasy football?I have a lot riding on your answer! Thanks,Andy

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Football. EASILY!

Mike (NY, NY)

What are you doing with Raja Davis? Still worth owning?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Yes, but it is clear the Athletics will sit him and aren't believers, at least to me. And Coco is on the mend... own him, but prepare for irrelevance.

Jim (Boston)

Can you discuss Tyler Clippard? Is he worth a pick up and stash?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I'm a bit skeptical someone with this type of pedigree can keep pitching this well, but every season relievers come from nowhere and rock... so I could see a strong 75-inning season from him.

Jim (Seattle)

What are the chances Guillen ends the year as KC's most valuable OF?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I'd say Podsednik will steal 30 bases and hit for average, so yeah, he will beat out Jose Guillen...

michae (toronto)

hoffman coming in the game. what's gonna happen?????

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I am scared. Literally.

Gabriel (Brazil)

Is Chase Headley or Rasmus a fair value for David Price?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Not really, but go for it!

Brian K (Yonkers)

How does Ian Kinsler batting 5th affect him. Sure the RBI's might be better, but how much of a dropoff in steals should we expect?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I think we've proven that speedy players can run in any lineup spot... more RBIs, but he can steal 30 still... look at what Nelson Cruz has done in the 5 spot.

Jim (San Fran)

OMG, Hoffman just blew another save.. Doumit goes deep.. Hoffman should RETIRE

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

I. Am. Stunned. Again. I don't know what to say.. the Brewers have to remove him from the closer role, don't they?

michael (toronto)

hoffman blows the save. go pick up villanueva or hawkins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

LaTroy has been pitching the eighth... not very well, but it appears he would be next.

Steve (Kansas)

So is Liriano a top 15 pitcher now based on your estimates?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

I would have to say yes...

ross (nj)

how do you feel about rhyne hughes? worth a pickup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

No, it's tough to project much from him...

T. Hoffman (Milwaukee, WI)

Oops.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Oops is right...

Andrew (T.O)

Lilly for Matusz in a H2H league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I would rather own Lilly, but I'm guessing that's the minority view...

Pat (Chicago)

EK!!!!! Please rank 'em: Sheets, J. Garcia, Bucholz, and Duchscherer.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Buchholz, Garcia, Duke... and then Sheets...

A Reader ((Earlier This Chat))

You said earlier it was Villanueva, and subsequently said Hawkins. Which is it?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

If I'm the Brewers manager, it's Villanueva.. but since he entered in the sixth inning today, it's a pretty obvious sign it's not him. Mystifying, but that's what's happening...

Joe (PA)

Eric Karabell (3:06 PM)Other than the home run rate? What a shocking start for his season. Trevor Hoffman has already allowed more runs this season than all of 2009! As for next in line, I think it's Carlos Villanueva, not LaTroy Hawkins.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I know what I said... but the Brewers quickly proved otherwise...

John (Sarasota, FL)

Doumit vs. Olivo -- who would you go with?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Doumit.. but then again, he doesn't face Hoffman for awhile...

Riles (Denver)

What's your feeling about Russell Martin? Homered today, hitting for average ... top five at catcher once again?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

No... not top 5... but top 10.

Andy (Denver, CO)

Napoli hasn't produced yet-- do you still believe?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Streaky hitter, I could still see 20 homers, yes.

Mike (Chicago)

Drop Derek Lowe or give him some time? He gets the wins but the ERA and walks are not helping

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Ah, the anti-Greinke... too painful to own him.

Billy (Chicago, IL)

EK, do you think Montero is woth a DL slot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

In 10-team leagues with one catcher slot, no. In NL-only formats, sure...

Scott (NY)

projections for Ike Davis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I don't think he hits more than 15 home runs this season, but a .280 batting average, 70 RBIs ...sure.

Octavio Dotel (Pittsburgh)

My turn to come in and screw things up...

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

To give undeserving Trevor the win... I could see that...

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all for today. I am saddened by Hoffman, since I own him on a few teams... we shall see! Thank you for joining us in chat today, and have a great day.
