Hey all. Good to talk to you again. Rd. 2 is just days away! Im at the united center..hawks just got done with practice...Ill get the news out of the way quickly...buff was at wing today with madden and brouwer and then he was in the crease during power play work...q confirmed he will start there..my peeps in canada tell me they are going nuts over this news...not sure who will replace him on the point yet...ok, now your questions!
Who do you think will be the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup Champions?
Pitt or chicago...cant do better than that for you
Hey Jesse,Is Q addressing the fact that the Hawks gave up good leads in the late periods of a few games in the first series? The Canucks are offensively talented enough to really exploit that.
Hasnt been brought up that specific but everyone knows its there and was an issue in march, etc. they are addressing it but mostly by just telling them to focus no matter the lead or situation...
How much of a factor will Brian Campbell be as he continues his return to the ice and if you could rate his ice tempo where would you put it at?
Just rememebring the 3 games he's played i dont recall him taking the puck deep into enemy territory as he likes to do so he might still be a little tentative...hes getting closer so expect him to do more..cant complain with his return, as good as can be expected...needs to be even better against this team
After watching the first round, and the incredible play of the defensemen (Brent Sopel for Team MVP), I've noticed that Seabrook and Keith have not had the same success they had earlier in the year. This change has been most noticeable since the Olympic break. Do you think Quenville will match this defensive pairing up against the Sedin line, or will he rotate in the other defensemen?
No,I think it will be seabrook/keith..the set the bar so high so sometimes they dont meet it but they are still better than the 2nd pair..on the road, you may see hammer up against them a lot but at home mostly keith, etc.
The big difference that I saw between games 1-3 and 4-6 is the way we charged the net in games 4-6. It also helped Rinne gave up some rebounds, but do you still see Bickell playing on the 1st line, and scratching Frasor and Eager for the Canucks series? Bickell has really been a big strong body and he's been charging the net. (got us the penalty on the 1st goal in game 4 that helped relive some nerves). Also, any word on the date of game 1?
good question. bickell is a story in of itslef. cant speak for the WHOLE searies cause it can change at any time but he will start there..thinkk about it..he gets time over burish, fraser, eager...if brouwer was playing better, he might be on that top line and one of those other guys on the 4th and bickell on the bench but Q likes him there....i agree with you..he started crashing the net..drew that first penalty in game 4 and the hawks never looked back...i hear what u hear, saturday now.
Jesse, getting married this friday, unless of course game 1 is friday, then it's up in the air... Please tell me it will be saturday. that will make for 1 very happy hawks fan and 1 happy wife and that equals 2 HAPPY HUMANS.
I just done know for sure...im almost positive sat. canuks are due to practice here friday so unless leage pulls a fast one, it will be sat.
The Hawks recalled 8 players from Rockford today. Do you see any of them getting into the lineup during this series with the Canucks? If tempers start to flare, it might be good to have Jassen Cullimore in there. Also, I love what the Canadiens have done by throwing their top prospect (PK Stubben) into the boiling pot of the Stanley Cup playoffs...any chance the Hawks do it with Kyle Beach?
Great job on the blog, Jesse. It has really helped me get to know this team again over the past year. Do you think Dustin Byufglien's struggles have to do now with his ever changing role? It didn't seem to me like he had a very good series and an even worse Game 6.
I think being dropped to that last D pair kind of hid him a little in the series plus nash isnt his type of opponent. im hoping he's re-inspired going back up front and in front of luongo...
So whats the deal with Kim Johnsson? When is he going to get back and what kind of impact do you think he brings to the team?
No and subsequently...none
Do the Hawks really have a chance if Hossa doesn't kick it into gear?
Yes, and I'm sorry I dont think Hossa played that poorly against nash..he had dominant stretches and i bleieve even when he is sub-par he's better than most...he'll be fine
I know alot was made about how great the PK was but the PP played pretty poorly. Is Q shaking up the lines or anything?
I disagree..4 goals in 6 games is not bad..could they have had more, yes, but it was abover average at least...yes...toes/kane/buff...with sharp and keith...then hoss/kopecky/steeg with seabrook and campbell
Burish and Bickell here to stay (3-0 with them in the lineup) or will Eager get a nod because of the potential that Vancouver will try to "skate through" the Hawks?
Bickell yes..for now..no burish
Who most concerns you besides the Sedin boys and Samualsson?
just the fact they are deeper than most teams in the conference...kesler, selke finalist...under rated d....might be culture shock in game 1 going from nash style to vancouver...
J-Dog, If Buff plays up front does this mean that Hendry and or Nicky B might be stepping in on the back end?? I noticed for your blog that that big Buff was used in a powerplay role, unreal idea.......
I kind of like J-Dog. yes, boynton or hendry take his place..not sure who yet
Hey Jesse, when is the full schedule going to be released?
tonight after wash/mtl game..ill tweet @espnchihawks and blog as well
Hey Jesse, which team do you think has improved more since last years semifinals, Hawks or Nucks?
good question.how's this? even improvement which keeps the hawks better
Jesse, got a random question. I heard the announcer last night in the wings/coyote game refer to a shot/pass as a shass, ever heard that before? Sounds kind of sirty to me. What would you call it if anything? Thanks
Have not heard that. I wil lask keith..he does it the most
What sort of punishment would Duncan Keith faced had the league decided to take any action on the face squirting incident?
4 game suspension. hand slap. small fine maybe.
Jesse, I have a question about the PP units. I like that they're moving Buff back to forward to promote havoc in front of Luongo, but Andrew Ladd is a good "dirty goal" type guy and usually pretty good with deflections. Why doesn't Q use him on the PP units? He's a big body like Buff. Just my mind running like mad on how we can beat these Canucks...
It's not a bad question. He likes Kopecky in that role right now. He does change his mind. Brouwer has been used there as well. It seems wherever Hossa goes, Kopecky isnt far behind so for now, it's him.
How is the United Center atmosphere compared to other stadiums you have been to?
Its louder at the UC than anywhere I've been but Vancouver comes pretty close to a great atmosphere.Nash was loud at times...like during commericals which was weird. But when the UC is rocking, nothing beats it. Havent been to MTL, told thats nuts too
I originally thought game 1 was going to be Friday, but now I read that Saturday is more likely. Is that only because NBC wants to show the game?
Plenty of reasons. Canada tv included..depends if Van is last canadian team or not, etc.
Where on gods earth is Kim Johnsson?? Please can I get an update?
I think he's back in Minnesota.
Jesse, Is that true after the Gold Medal game, while shaking hands, Patrick Kane told Luongo "I'll see you in the playoffs"?
Other way around..and yes, its true..said in a good natured way. Nothing malicious.
J-Dawg, Who would you like to see as the 3rd D pairing ????????
Good question. Hmm..Boynton more physical..Hendry better skater..I'm going to say Boynton to start.
Other than goaltending, what do you think will be the main factor for the Hawks to win this series?
Special teams is obvious...but it seems when the Hawks have beaten them they have contained the Sedins..That can happen especailly at home in Chicago...Van is going to winsome games. Let it be there. So i Guess limit the Sedin line to occasional dominance? And the Hawks offense i think will fall into line..
What are you thoughts on Bolland's play in the Nashville series? I thought he was average at best, probably a little worse. Some poor D-zone coverage on his part were directly responsible for 2 goals, I thought. Thoughts?
Simply put. If it was the same Bolland, Sharp would not be at center. That answers your question
Wondering if you think that Sopel will be playing big minutes, he came up huge in the Nashville series, by the way my dad says hi.
Hey dad. Little step up in class here. He'll get his minutes on PK but 5 on 5, have to be careful of Van speed so under 20 but more than 15?? Maybe?
J-Dog, Your thoughts on Versteeg being on that 2nd powerplay line. Why no Bolland on either????
Using Bolland more for defense. My guess is his line checks the Sedins with some of Madden in there as well.
You can call me out has being a ban-wagon fan and have been watching the Hawks since last year on my honeymoon when the Hawks were in the Western Conf. Finals and I maybe you can explain to me why the #2 seed is playing a #3 seed and not the lower seed Detroit, would we want the Wings in the quarterfinals in any case?
Because the #1 seed is playing the lowest seed..San Jose was 1, Det. 5
For the past 2 seasons Brent Sopel has really gotten under my skin, I guess I just felt he did not fit in with our defense. What has changed? I feel like we are getting a completely different player out there and I love it!
Again, easier to look good 5 on 5 against Nash than some of the faster teams..it was good fit for him but he has had a good season on PK..and that's where he excelled in last series
I'm not sure of the numbers, but it seemed as if the Hawks were out-hit against Nashville. Was Nashville really that much more physical than us? And do you see this being a problem against Vancouver, or will it not be a problem since they're such a "rival"?
There were moments where it was a problem like in Game 3..but sometimes its misleading as in Game 6. When you have the puck a lot you're geting checked not delivering them so you cant look at just the total. You have to watch the game to ksee if its a factor. I think they will be ok in the physicall dept against Van. Buff can do it more without having to worr yabout getting burned on D. Would like to see Brouwer pick it up.
Hi Jesse-do you agree that it is now clear that Sharp is Hawks best option as second line center and Bolland is back in a role he is more comfortable in? Do you think Bolland still has the potential to be a #2 center.
For now, yes. I imagine Bolland will be given the chance next year for #2 but if not, he might just be a number 3. For now, good move by Q. Sharp is a very smart player. And that's what Hossa needs along with his skill
Why on earth do you think the Penguins are so good and a legitimate Cup contender? I know they are defending champs and Crosby and Malkin are playing well, but they have a miserable record against the top teams in the league this season. 0-1 vs Chicago, 0-6 vs. New Jersey, 0-5 vs. Washington.I would take about 4 or 5 teams over the Pens.
Because after you win a Cup you have less interest in things, until the playoffs. Everyone is getting up for you not the other way around. Playoffs are the story.
curious as to your thoughts on Keith spraying water on that nasty Nashville fan in the penality box. Jesse you rock!
Funny. I like that kind of stuff as long as it doesnt get out of hand.
you say both teams improved from last year but that makes the Hawks better, but last year the canucks were 2 minutes away from going home up 3-1. And they were very much in control in games 3 and 4 last year at UC, until the last 2 minutes. I think last year was a little closer than most people seem to be thinkingmore worried about the Canucks than the Sharks/Wings winner, or anyone from the East. Hoping we get it but I think the winner of this wins the Cup
Some good points. Every series between 100 pt teams is going to turn on a little thing here or there. Its not an upset if Van wins. Simple as that. I just like the hawks a little bettwe in a lot of areas. People in canada think Im nuts but in my preview I picked Niemi over Luongo. OVERATED
Sup jesse... in watching that last series i was really disappointed in how long it took for the Hawks to get it together and realize they were supposed to be playing "Playoff Hockey." What do you think snapped them out of it, and do you expect to see the Hawks come out with more intensity vs the Nucks?
Getting down 2-1..Look at the other Series. Van, Det., San Jose all down 2-1 before winning it I believe. It happens..Yes, each series picks up in intensity and the Hawks can play thier game better against van
Question about goaltending. Niemi has come up big for us, and I think all of Chicago (and it's subsequent fans) are happy about that. With the Hawks calling up Crawford last week, is he going to be more heavily considered as a back-up in this series instead of Huet, who hasn't seen ice time since March?
As the trade deadline came up this year, I heard a lot of rumors about the 'hawks going after Halak. Just wondering how true that was (even though Bowman said he was good with the goaltenders we had). Halak is playing out of his mind this postseason.
I think they had a better chance at Price. They kicked the tires on any available goalie so yes, to some extent the rumors were true but thats no different than any team with an apparent need.
The last 3 games it seemed like the 4th line wasn't getting much playing time, will we see more of them in this series?
Game 6 was penalty marred so I think that's what happened there...5 on 5, I do think you'll see more of them...madden,brouwer,buff can be a good defensive unit to help on sedins, etc.
Which line do you think Q will most likely match up against the Sedins?
Hard to say today but I would assume it would start with Bolland but it could very well be Madden. Thats a question for thur/fri
I know everyone has been taking shots at Hossa for not producing but I have to say the guy has been backchecking like an absolute maniac so you cant question where his heart is. Also how about Thomas Kopecky? I love how he has been playing.
Agreed and I think Kopecky feeds off of Hossa..they are buds
it seemed like there was a time right when marian hossa came back that he skated on a line with toews and kane and it was dangerously successful. do you think if they have a problem scoring we might see that line again?
No, Kane didnt like going to the other wing so I highly doubt it.
if niemi get's hurt do u think huet could step up like camm ward and win conn smythe????
Hawks in 5, 6 or 7 games
6 or 7...they win at least one in Van
So I know trade talk is technically off limits right now since you're tired of discussing it ad nauseum, but all the same, do you think that given the question marks surrounding Bolland's return to form, the Hawks might be a bit hesitant now to include Sharp in any potential off-season dealings since he's needed too much as our 2nd-line center?
yes, but not so much because of Bolland but because sharp is a good player either way. They may have to, though.
Brouwer had a terrible series against Nashville. Do you see Q replacing him with either Burish/Fraser/Eager if he doesn't step in up in this round?
Not right away but it could happen. You have three hungary players there that want to play. If Brouwer can help on defense more than anything against Sedins, etc. that will be fine by me.
If I invite the Hawks to my wedding next year, do you think any of them will come?GO HAWKS!
Invite Wiz. No one is coming to his
With the Canucks being a physical team, any chance we see Eager back in the lineup at some point during the series?
I think there is a chance but he may be behind some others..Depends how it goes and what they need.
With Buff practicing with the forwards again, which forward will be moved to the bench?
WAIT, Hold on...Jesse you're saying that the Hawks may not have a choice but to deal Sharp? That sucks if they do!
If that's who teams want and they have to shed, they may have to include him. Nothing is for certain.
Who do you like in the Sharks/Wings series?
Hate to say Wings but I do.Hope Im wrong. Hawks will take Sharks down if they win
Hey, Jesse, what's your over-under for fights/roughing calls this series?
12..2 per game
With Q benching Burish, Eager, and Fraser througout most of the playoff run so far, do you thing this has any effect on them coming back next season? Any chance we see any of those 3 in a Hawks sweater next year?
No eager, No Burish...I'll say yes on fraser return
Hey Jesse....Why isn't Seabs doing a little more hitting? He seemed to step it up a bit in the last two games of this series, but it seems like he's built for hard checking, not that I've noticed his size or anything.....
He'll give it every so often..I think he knows when to bring it and when to dial down
How is it that you gave Niemi an edge over Luongo even though Niemi faced a weaker Nashville offense than L.A. offense? Luongo had to face better players in Kopitar, Smyth, Doughty, Simmons, etc and Nashville has only Erat and Weber?
Luongo has not been good since the olympics but bigger than that is the PK in round 1. Shea Weber and Arnott were blasting away...you dont have to have 20 great offensive players to do some damage on PP and Niemi was great, Luongo was not. Hawks have handled Luongo just fine last 2 seasons..I went with a gut call..Easy to pick Luongo, doesnt mean its right.
Is Niemi the number 1 goaltender next year?
If he's on the team
Jesse, obviously in hockey you can't purposely kick in a goal with your skate...was the Kane goal that Seabrook hit off his skate reviewed or reviewable?
You can review anything but If a guy makes a kicking motion from center ice and it goes in, I dont see them overturning it..of course, thats not what happened.
In the Old Chicago Stadium, the players not playing sat in the organ loft. Where do they watch the game from at the UC? Locker Room, Suite? They always say you learn more sometimes by watching, but how does that happen when watching on TV?
In Nash, they were up i nthe press box near me. In fact, Hendry and fraser were one row in front..at home its upstairs or in the locker room.
Hossa was big in the Nashville series doing "the little things" better than the others. His back-checking was incomparable to anyone else. Do you think this is the key to us making "The Run" and when he scores it's just an added bonus?
He needs to do both..that's how the Hawks are better than last year. Him alone.
Couple more than have to call it a day.
Do you think that the Hawks can win this series with anything but stellar goaltending from Anti?
Sure. Canucks just won without stellar from Luongo. :)
ok so the night they clinched comcast said game 1 would be friday, then sportscenter said it might be a thursday saturday start to the series, so which is it?
Looks like saturday. The canucks are scheduled to practice here on Friday. Wont be tomorrow. Could change..check my blog tonight or sign up to follow me on twitter @espnchihawks. We'll know after the wash/mtl game
Ok, that is going to do it for today. Thanks as always. Next week, probably from vancouver! If I missed a question, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org See you at the UC. enjoy the ride, its just beginning!
