Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I'm back!! Thanks for joining in today. The playoffs are truly must see tv for many of us, so I'm sure we'll have lots to discuss."When he gets to hurting inside and can't use his emotion words, he takes to streaking".

Andrew (VA)

Now that it seems inevitable that Ted Leonsis is going to buy the Wizards, what comes next? Do we see a Capitals-esque change where he builds from the ground up? While I miss Mr. Pollin, I am very excited to have a man like Leonsis to take the reigns and get the Wizards back in contention.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

It seems that the two principal players will be at odds. Ernie has never been a guy who builds that way, and Mr.Leonsis seems to prescribe to that medicine. Should be interesting and he comes in with a ton of credibility.

Larry Brown (Philly)

Will Jrue Holiday be a PG that I will love?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Yes.

Thomas (Gainesville)

2 questions Thorper. Can Tebow change his style, and did you see that long Facebook fight on your page?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Absolutely. He dips the ball below his waist the same way most college hoopsters drop the ball low before they shoot. Most of them correct this in the NBA. And yes, I saw the fight. So did my mom!! I'm at David B. Thorpe on Facebook and @coachthorpe on twitter, but please, leave the fighting to your own pages.

Lance (california)

I think people are REALLY under estimating the Celtics and Cavs series. I got celts in 7!

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I got Cavs in 6, but yes, it will be great.

Broad Street Brian (76ers Fan on the roof of a tall building)

Prof Thrope, Can you give me a reason to hope that my Sixers won't stink for the next 5 years? Are we the Knicks south?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

They have some good young talent, but it has to be coached and managed and developed.

Kristian (NH)

your point has been proven for me, its a coaches league. Utah has one and Denver doesnt (right now). Did you think Utah had this in them after AK47 and Okur went down?! and where did CJ Miles come from?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I picked Utah in 6 for one reason. Jerry Sloan over AD.

Dave (Phoenix)

Isn't that line from Old School? Tell me your thoughts on the Suns/Blazers series. Does it go 7? And why?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Not from Old School, but Vince Vaughn was in the movie. I think the Suns can wrap it up tomorrow if they bring all of their energy.

jeff, SLC [via mobile]

Mistletoe, mistletoe! Go Jazz

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Well done. "Four Christmases".

Don (Edmond, OK)

Do you see Ibaka and Harden moving into the starting lineup for the Thunder next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Hard to supplant Thabo, but yes, it could definitely happen.

Brad (Boston)

Do you think there's any chance that the Bulls realize what a great job Del Negro has done developing Rose and Noah, and decide to retain him? Vinny may not be a coaching Einstein, but he's a great motivator.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I'm not a fan of his simplistic game designs, but this much is true-he's going to get better every year, and he has helped them get better each of the last 2 years despite major injuries and some bad karma. If he gets fired, he'll land a new job quickly.

Kyle (MN)

What moves do you see the Timberwolves making this offseason? If they get the #1 pick do they need to trade Flynn and Sessions/Rubio?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Yes, a trade would seem likely.

Mike C (Chicago)

Hi David, Even though they won the series, I was not overly impressed with Cleveland. Boston on the other hand did impress me. Do you think this series will be closer than we all originally thought?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I'm not someone who thinks that what you mention matters. Think Boston two years ago.

Josh (Las Vegas)

Do you buy into the "Kobe is Old" idea? I think he still is arguably the best in the league.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Josh, that argument is long settled. It's like saying the earth may indeed be flat.

Warren (Ft. Lauderdale)

Michael Beasley calls you.... He has the utmost respect and just wants you to tell him something encouraging.... what do you say?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Get busy getting better.

Mark (NC)

Why did the Bobcats get whipped so badly?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Not enough shooters, and Orlando shot well.

Andy Bernard (Scranton)

If you've been watching it's been a rough week for me Thorpedo. What's a Nard Dog to do?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Quit the Office and recreate your singing group.

Nat (Milwaukee)

FEAR THE DEAR DAVE!!! How far could we have gone with a healthy Bogut? Even with him i still think we are an all star away from the easter finals...

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Nat, it's called "spell check". Look into it, or did you want me to fear the "Dear Dave". Just kidding, and yes, they are an impressive bunch that needs one more great player, preferably on the wing.

Mike (Chicago)

Thorpedo!!!!!! Two questions, who do you see the bulls signing this offseason and what was up with the reversed call on Rose's And 1 play last night?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

No clue on the signings. I was shocked it was not an And 1.

Matthew (Frustrated Dallas Fan)

Hey dave! Please give me your thoughts on Dirk? Is he really a Superstar? Why can't he EVER get us over the top? How much help does one guy need?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Wade and Melo may both be one and done. One player can not get much done, period.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

The Mavs have good players, but are short of special ones in their prime.

Paul (Chicago)

How good does DRose get?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Not much if he does not add a 3 pt shot to his game, but very very good if he does. Great actually.

Mart (NYC)

How do I stop using my off-hand while shooting? I kind of do a little flick with the tops of my fingers. Just practice shooting one handed? All over the court, not just free throws? Anything else?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Shoot one handed but also work on keeping the left hand still. Feel that sensation.

stan (nyc)

wut do u think about ur guy FESENKO finally coming of age? utah front line is making NENE look like a wimp and KENYON MARTIN look like an old man. millsap, boozer and FES bring TOUGHNESS

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Fes is not "my guy". He rarely practiced when he was down here. He's grown up A TON since then, I'm told. I've always said he was a terrific talent that just needed to figure it out.

Don Nelson (Oakland, CA)

Can Steph Curry be the cornerstone piece of a championship contender? Are we a good, consistent rebounder and post defender away from being a really good team?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Yes he can. And yes you are.

Dave (Portland)

Thorpe, I just read your quotes from Truehoop, where you speculate on how Andre Miller may have some genetic advantages. You mentioned a famous horse in your analysis. I just realized that this is why so many of us love being able to read your thoughts. It's not that you are so smart, though you probably are, but more that you just have an ability to tie things together to help us understand better that no one else would ever think of. Everyone needs to read that Truehoop segment today. Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Thanks, and yes, I am not "so smart". Malcolm Gladwell suggests that you just have to be "smart enough". It's possible that I am. Experience also counts, and I have that, in the form of 20+ years of coaching. As Al Pacino said once in a move, "I've been around, ya know".

Larry (NY)

Is it just me or with every day passing it seems less and less likely we get lebron? I am thinking we will be seeing the Joe Johnson era begin very soon...

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Agreed.

stan cranley (nyc)

chris sheridan is lookin like a fool because he type so slow compared to THORPEDO!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

My guess is his chatters say the same about my short answers. And I know Chris well, he's no fool. Far from it.

Hubie (Brown)

THERE WAS A TIME I COULD SEE

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Bingo.

Jay (Utah)

Deron Williams as MVP of the playoffs so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

He's in a dead heat with Jameer.

Tom (Chicago)

How can an impending max FA watch the Chicago Bulls and not want to play with this young core? DRose is a superstar in the making...think Bosh was watching?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

He had to be. Here's the problem, Bosh must want to have Noah next to him. It's every scoring big's dream to play with a talent like Noah. But how can the Raps do a sign and trade without getting Noah?

Peter (Chicago)

What do the Bulls need to contend for a championship?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Serious upgrade at the 2, for starters.

Coach (NYC)

Lebron shooting lefty- was he really in that much pain or was he trying to be a hero?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Looked a little drama like to me.

Ash (Chicago)

A much worse Cavs team took a much better Celtics team to 7 and almost won 2 years ago....Do you think Jamison and Shaq put the Cavs way over the top in this series? I say it's over in 5, the Heat are a bad team with one great player, not impressed at all.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

I picked the Cavs, but do not underestimate Boston.

Jason (Lehi, UT)

Dwill the best PG in the NBA right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

He's growing on me like you wouldn't believe.

Brandon (Utah)

How are the Jazz pulling this off? They're missing two starters for crying out loud.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

System, strategy, style, and a whole lotta DWill.

Jim (Chicago)

Hi Dave, Love the Chats You say alot if you know how to read. Who says no first? Deng and this year 1st for Al Jefferson and Wayne Ellington

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Wolves would want more.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the 2009-2010 NBA Champions?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I picked Spurs in October, but today I'd lean Orlando.

Tom (Chicago)

"But how can the Raps do a sign and trade without getting Noah?"Easy they dont give them Noah. Toronto has no leverage other than the extra year but no GM is dumb enough to deny a player a sign and trade because the GM is bitter he's not getting a value in return. It looks bad on the GM amongst other agents and players. I feel the bulls would offer Deng, Taj and picks or just Taj and picks if the Raps dont want to take on Deng.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Of course you are right. But there are other places for Chris to go with better assets to give Toronto.

Teddy (Miami)

Coach, I understand your philosophy on this being a coaches league, but I guess there is an asterisk beside that if you have Lebron James on your team. Mike Brown is not a great coach, I don't even know if he should be classified as good. I haven't seen him run one true offensive set in a game, its hand the ball to Lebron, run down the shot clock about 10-12 seconds and let him create a shot for himself or his teammates. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Brown is subpar on offense but superb on defense and culture.

L.Thomas (Jakarta)

Hi coach.. apa kabar?(how are you). a question for you. if there's a one-on-one tournament, who do you think will win it all? i'm thinking lebron. for all time, i'll go with jordan, chamberlain or magic.

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I'll see those three, but raise you a Kareem.

Bill (SLC)

David, I know that you coach your son in little league. And you seem to have a philosophy about everything you do. So how do you handle this delicate task, I'm struggling with it with my boys.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I don't believe in "tough love". I think it's bogus. I like "toughness and love". I want my children to face all the adversity they will face in the outer world in my home first. Disappointment, failure, teaching, criticizing, coaching, punishment, etc. That way we can work out the proper reactions. Sports is all about learning how to deal with failure, so when I coach my son, I coach him with a very critical eye, and voice. But I tell him I love him constantly at practice and games, and praise him just as often for his efforts. I don't much care for outcomes yet, just effort. I tell him every coach he'll ever have after me will not love him like I do, but they'll be just as tough. He'll be ready for anything!!

Paul (Tehachapi)

The local Parks and Rec district is going through some trouble and are planning on filtering out programs that aren't helping the community, how do I pitch my summer lessons plan to them. I know the obvious things that I want to include, such as character building and properly learned set of basketball skills, but what else?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Team sports is all about community. Hammer that point home, because if you learn to treat your teammate great you can do the same with your neighbor.

Jake (Utah)

Does DWill need to put some more arc on this shot? Seems a little flat.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Most players see their shot go flatter during the year. Easily fixed.

Mike (here)

Could you see Sloan never winning the coach of the year award and then having it named after him when he retires?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Brilliant idea!! Yes I can.

Coach (NYC)

Name me one player that is all-star caliber here that would struggle in the International game. My guess would be Rondo due to lack of shooting

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Shaq.

Mike (Chicago)

Who says no first in this S&T deal, Bulls get bosh, Wolves get Deng and picks (this year's first and Bobcats pick), Raptors get Al jeff

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Very interesting. Brewer and Deng on the wings would be dynamite on d.

jon (chicago)

what is your take on UTAH? is their good play a reflection of how bad Denver is right now or are they making Denver look bad?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

It's a combination.

chea (MD)

As a gm starting a franchise would you draft Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose or Rajon Rondo as your point guard for the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

It really depends on what kind of basketball you want to play. I love how Rose scores and how he is such a great guy to play with-no ego. Rondo is by far the best pure pg. But I like Westbrook's ability to attack and rebound. I think he'll end up being terrific. Can't go wrong with any of them.

steve from battle creek (battle creek, MI)

why do you think the best athletes are African American, Genetics or breeding?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I know this is always a hot button issue, and I'm not smart enough to know much. But I know this, as someone who coached many kids from the "projects"; nothing replaces hard work. If a young player has the desire, he can accomplish so much. And many of my students from "poor" backgrounds had incredible desire and work ethic.

Tom (Cleveland)

Best five on five game all time? I've got PG - Magic on Oscar, SG - Kobe on MJ, SF - Bird on LBJ, - PF - Duncan on Malone, C - Shaq on Kareem.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Yep, that'll do it.

Coach (NYC)

Will the Lakers regret not making a move for Hinrich? They would be the best defensive team in the league with him on the ball.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Ask me at seasons end.

Jake (Tacoma)

Coach - a few years you were ridiculed in this chatroom for telling everybody that Fesenko (Jazz) had a chance to be really good. You may be the only one who is not surprised at him stepping up due to Memo's injury. Nice prediction! Vindication for you!

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Thanks, but lots of NBA guys saw this. And he's not there yet.

Nimesh (Orlando)

Does Dwight explode for a huge series against the ATL/MIL??

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Probably.

Ben (NYC)

Who makes their teammates better the best? Jennings, Evans, Curry, Rose, Rondo, Westbrook??? I say Curry.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Today Rondo, tomorrow probably Curry or Jennings.

Chris (NYC)

Looking ahead to the offeason, pretending you're another David (Kahn), who blinks first in a Kevin Love-Joakim Noah deal? Would make more sense for T'Wolves with Jefferson at PF, and CHI would still have to move Hinrich for a legit SG or C (maybe CHI reunites with Tyson Chandler?)

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Noah and Love are on different planets. One guys is a shot blocking energy guy who can defend wings and is adept at pick and roll coverage, the other is a great shooter and space eater. Both rebound and pass expertly. I'll take the defensive demon.

Angus (Regina, SK)

Hey David, conciseness is next to godliness, great stuff! How dangerous do you think Joe Johnson in Chicago next year would make the Bulls?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

He'd be a big help, no doubt.

Coach (NYC)

Who is the smartest player in the NBA? On and off the court.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Kidd probably.

Joe (Brazil)

Thooooorpe! Love your chats! In your opinion, who are the top 3 coaches in this playoffs so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Right now it's SVG and then everyone else.

Coach (NYC)

As a coach, what do you stress most when playing man to man defense?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Stance, attitude, arms wide, seeing the ball.

Darin (Nashville,TN)

I love the triangle offense. Why don't more NBA teams run it?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

It takes a long time to teach and master.

Ryan (Minneapolis)

Reading your chats, I like other readers, don't see the great Brewer D, but you and other experts do see it...what is the average fan missing? What should we be looking for to recognize great D?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Steals, deflections, covering up for teammates, energy.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Charges too.

AJ (Winnipeg)

What does toronto need to contend next year? besides bosh staying!

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

More athletic and tougher wings.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Better pg play on d.

Joseph (Idaho)

What no Brooks or Sloan for coach of the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Sloan would be #2 for me.

Jon (Phoenix, AZ)

What do you think of Gentry's coaching this postseason so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

It's been good. Not great.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Last night's Spurs-Mavs game: anomaly or bad sign for the Spurs?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Just the Mavs playing well at home. These are two evenly matched teams.

Damon (Santa Cruz, CA)

Shaq on Kareem? No way! Put Wilt in there instead of Diesel!

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

In his prime, Diesel was the Destroyer.

ian (florida)

For knowledge of the game (including history) do any players surpass kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Probably not, though LBJ and Sheed know a lot.

Derk (NYC)

I think us fans should really be thankful that we have three superstars in the league who are transcendent. Kobe taking on Westbrook was incredible, LBJ picking up his team when necessary and Wade refusing to let his team get swept. Awesome.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Indeed.

Mike (Back Bay )

You must be joking.. Kidd is the smartest player?? He assaulted his wife- that has to be the dumbest mistake you're ever made?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I was talking on the floor. I don't have a clue off of it-any Ivy League guys running around? Maybe Foyle is our guy.

MC Welk (SLC)

Who wins a game of one-on-one vs. Caron Butler and RJefferson?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

If a tree falls in a forest with no people, does anyone care?

Terry (Madison)

Why haven't you banned anyone lately?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I've mellowed in my old age.

Lowenbrau (Cleveland, OH)

Why do you see Orlando beating the Cavs in the ECF? Haven't the Cavs sufficiently addressed the matchup issues with the additions of Shaq, Jamison, Parker, Moon, etc? Also, Orlando only has one style of play.....admittedly it's effective, but the Cavs can win games playing a variety of ways due to their depth.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Your betting on Shaq. I'm not.

Clay (Savannah)

Hey Coach, I sent you a message on Facebook a couple weeks ago. Would it be best to reach you after the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

No, send it again. I miss them sometimes.

Mike (here)

Diesel needs to be there, however, Russell over Kareem for sure. Kareem was the second or third best player on his own team for most of his career. He just played for a very long time.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

I'm mellow no more. You are banned Mike, and may possibly have to forfeit your basketball watching license.

Jordan (AZ)

I'd have to say Nash is the smartest player on/off the court. Have you ever seen him in a full-length interview? He is a pure genious.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

He is a genius.

Mike (Dallas)

Hey Coach one last question before you depart please. I am debating this with workmates. If the Mavericks miracolously sign Chris Bosh this summer, will he be able to play with Dirk?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

I don't like it.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Time to go. Happy birthday to both my baby brothers and my dad!! Love you guys. Enjoy the week and weekend everyone. Be safe.
