Today's version of NASCAR chat comes from beautiful Quail Hollow CC in Charlotte, N.C., where I just followed Tiger Woods through a 2-over par 74. My pants are soaked and my feet are tired, but I'm ready to switch gears for the next hour. Fire away.
What does it take to become an engineer in the world of nascar?
A four-year degree and then some. NASCAR actually has an institute in the Mooresville, N.C., area that trains promising young talent for the sport. I don't have it in my hand, but you could probably google it online. Several colleges around this area have programs in NASCAR engineering. I believe Clemson is one.
Will we ever see the #3 Car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series since Dale Earnhardt Passed Away in 2001?
Good question. It's up to Richard Childress and Teresa Earnhardt. If RC's grandson, Austin, makes it to the top level he's been promised a shot at it.
Would the #3 Wrangler Chevrolet that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive in the Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona on July 2 be the #7 team?
It's an RCR car with a Hendrick engine run out of JR Motorsports. To be honest, I'm not sure what team.
Whats your take of this gordon vs. Johnson thing. I say Gordon just has not been on Top of his game the past few years like he is now. As always your the best in the Biz!!!!!
First, thanks. As for my take it's totally frustration on Gordon's part. He has a car that can compete with Johnson and isn't getting the wins or the results. That he's had a few run-ins with his teammate makes it more frustrating. He's tired of seeing JJ get the wins and the titles. but the two are teammates and can't afford any heated rivalry that could hurt the chances of either, so it'll pass.
Who will Drive the #7 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series race at Darlington?
I believe it's Scott Wimmer. He's the only person outside of Danica Patrick I've seen associated with that ride. Just not sure Darlington is on the list for sure, although Wimmer has had success there.
Do you think that Mark Martin will race until he catches up with Morgan Shepherd?
Funny. No. But I believe he'll be in racing, probably as an owner with Hendrick support.
Do you think that Jeff and Jimmys fued will continue into richmound. Jeff has the fire in the belly again. How does a driver loose it and how does he get it back. Thanks
I don't think Jeff lost the fire as much as his cars and team hasn't been up to the 48's standards. Will the feud with Jimmie carry over? I think it's a feud only for Jeff who knows he has to rattle Jimmie to get an edge. Jimmie thinks everything is cool.
If you could only attend 3 motorsports events this year, where would you go?
Darlington because of the history, Talladega because of the intrigue and Richmond because the racing's always good there.
What do you think Kurt Busch's chances of getting a win this weekend is?
Decent. The Blue Deuce has been consistent this season and this isn't a bad track for Kurt.
who will dale jr drive for next season and will get budweiser back as a sponsor
He's under contract for Hendrick Motorsports for a few more years. Budweiser will stay in the sport if it can match with the right driver. I still think it could stay Kahne. If the numbers aren't right the beer company could disappear.
David, I know a lot of people are saying that this is a fish or cut bait year for Ragan but who would they hire to replace him?
That is the 6 million dollar question. It won't happen, but what if Mark Martin returned to the 6 for a year and let Kasey Kahne run in the 5?
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHO DO YOU HAVE FOR RICHMOND SATURDAY NIGHT
I like Denny Hamlin a lot. Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart also should be strong.
Do you think that Coach and JD should have promoted Jason Ratcliff to be Kyle's Sprint Cup crew chief instead of Dave Rogers? Seems like Kyle and Jason have better chemistry.
Not at all. Give this one time. It doesn't happen over night, and Dave and Kyle worked well together in the Nationwide Series.
Is it possible that Jimmie just thought he saw Jeff Gordon in the crowd and kept on trying to hit him?
Funny. I was afraid he was going to nail me with a drive a few times. Being around Johnson with a golf club is like being around Sam Hornish with a car. You never know.
Dave, say it isn't so. Did you see the article in the Enquirer about Junior. Well this should get the attention away from Jimmie and Jeff.
Which one? He's been in several. What did this one say?
Just saw the 3 car that Jr will drive! Man that thing looks sweet!
Sure does. Nice to see them remember Dale that way.
With the IRL's new CEO talking about moving Indy back to 11 a.m. to make the double possible again, who could conceivably do it other than Robby Gordon?
Sure Tony Stewart would jump at the chance. Bet Juan Pablo Montoya, Dario Franchitti would be candidates as well.
do you think Martin will buy Phoenix racing for and drive their in 2011 so that Kasey can move into the #5 next year?
I talked to the folks there this week. They say there has been no communication, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. I will say this. I still believe Kasey will wind up in the 5 next year. And Martin has said he is open to ownership.
Do we need to come pick you up?
My feet do ache.
I wish I could think of an interesting wuestion, I am really bored at work. any suggestions? working is not an option
Why don't you ask me when Junior is going to win again. Nobody asks that.
Who would have a bigger impact on NASCAR in 2010 if they were still with us: Dale Sr., David Poole or Bill France Jr.?
Dale Sr. hands down. DEI would still be in place and Junior would be driving there.
Nascar says the parts on Keselowski's car were illegal, Penske says the parts were broken. What is the true story?
NASCAR has no reason to lie about it.
To whoever asked, I beleave I read or it was mentioned on TV that the 3 will be a 3rd "JRM" car with the 88 cup team pitting it.
Thanks for the help. You win the big prize today.
What's your Favorite sport Moment you covered?
Ironically, I'm at a golf course covering Tiger Woods and my favorite moment involved him. It was the 1997 Masters when Woods won the first of his four green jackets. It was history. We don't get to cover that kind of history often. Second might be Denver's John Elway winning a Super Bowl with Terrell Davis suffering from migraines.
is Danica that hot in person?
Not up to me to say.
What current sponsor in NASCAR has been around the longest? Is it Valvoline or something else?
Good question. Wish I had a definite answer. Anybody out there know for sure. Whatever I said would be an educated guess.
Newt, Thanks for chatting today...Although I have been a huge #48 fan since his rookie year (he is from California like me so it was dumb luck I chose him back then), I still love to see the more unhearalded drivers do well. Several have stepped up this year (Menard for one) but I am really impressed with Scott Speed. He has a personality that makes him stand out in a good way and now this year, he is showing early signs of "getting it" in only his second year. Red Bull's equipment is not on par with HMS, JGR, RCR, or even Petty Motorsports so what Scott and his team are doing is even more impressive. Do you think Red Bull will screw up again (see A.J. Allmendinger) and cut another promising driver loose just when they are coming around? Put him in better stuff and I bet he turns some heads....just sayin'...
Red Bull has invested quite a lot on Scott, which is why AJ isn't around. He'll get the full chance to prove himself.
Who'll have a better race at Kansas: the IndyCars on Saturday or the Trucks on Sunday?
Was Ed Hinton serious when he said Jr basically has no shot to win other than the two restrictor plate races the rest of the year? That team still has work to do but they could win any given race now in my opinion.
Ed doesn't joke. I disagee with him, though. Wouldn't surprise me to see him win before July.
Whats the status of that four Gibbs car?
Told they still are trying to get there. They hate things didn't work out with Kahne. All came down to sponsorship and a lack of time.
Will we see the new Pony cars like Mustangs in the Nationwide race tomorrow night? Will Kyle be running a Toyota Solora or will it be the Camry?
Mustangs will be used by Ford. Toyota sticking with Camry I believe. Shame Chevy didn't use the Camaro.
What has made Talledega change so much in terms of racing? In his 2003 win, Jr led 133 laps and 60 or 70 in each of his other wins. Does the new car make it easier to pass?
The new car makes drafting different, passing harder and the cars overall more equail.
so the new nationwide cars are gonna hit the track this season. my question is why the heck did GM go with the impala and not a camaro? you have the mustang (ford) and charger (dodge) which make sense. the camry (toyota) makes sense too since toyota doesn't have a sports car in production. so what is GM thinking with not putting out the camaro because i love the look of the mustang and charger? thanks
Good question and one I haven't gotten a good answer on after repeated tries. I love Camaro. Would like to have the convertible version when it comes out in the fall.
Rookie and ARCA winner Steve Arpin was in the #7 last week and this week and may be able to line up other races until Danica gets back - When do you expect an announcement by Harvick as to where he will be in '11?
Harvick is talking seriously about returning to Richard Childress Racing. As soon as a top sponsor can be had I suspect you'll hear something. I'd say by mid-summer at the latest, but you never know.
Do you think Harvick taunting Shell Penzoil at Dega will come back to haunt him because sponsors will stay away from him because of his lack of professionalism?
Not at all. Think they will appreciate his competitive fire.
hmmmm....no Indy 500 on your list of 3 events.....
Not into the open wheel cars so much.
is NASCAR bigger than NFL?
No. Not even close.
Does Jeff Gordan own part of the 48 team?
Yes he does. Part of the deal when Hendrick brought JJ into the sport.
I saw the feature on Davey Allison on last night's Nascar Now. Being somewhat new to the sport, I had never heard of him until the past week or so. The piece mentioned he died on 1993 or so, but didn't say how. Did he die in a crash or of something else? Also, was he good enough to have challenged Gordon through the 90s had he lived?
It was a helicopter crash and he was good enough to challenge for titles in the early 90s. A great loss for the sport.
When is the Dinger's RPM deal up? I'd like to see him in the 6.
He signed a multi-year deal before this season. Not sure how many multi is.
What would Martin's motivation be to leave HMS and the 5 for the 6 with Roush? Could not be going to better equipment and a chance to win.
It was just a dream scenario that would let Martin finish in the car he drove for 19 seasons.
David, Is Nascar working on bringing or developing some more camera angles ie (cameras built into the surface of the track or any thing to bring the race to the living room? I like the wall mounted camera and crank it up but surley their is more they can do?
They're always looking for new an innovative things, but I haven't heard of anything specific.
Hey David, I hoped you enjoyed the golf today. Is the Harvick to Stewart-Haas scenario over due to the Shell/Pennzoil sponsorship going to Penske?????? Are the chances better that he stays at RCR????
The sponsor was a big part of it. Stewart can't sign him without the sponsor. I'd say the odds are better than 70 percent he'll stay where he is.
Great weekend in racing coming up with all 3 NASCAR national series in action and the IRL at Kansas. Too bad I need to work on stuff for finals. My question is who is your favorite for a Richmond sweep this weekend? KB? KH? Carl? Someone else?
Kyle Busch of the ones you mentioned. It is a great weekend to watch racing. Golf too if you're in Charlotte.
Any talk of any mergers undoing themselves: or is Earnhardt/Gnassi together for good- along with some of the other "merge or die" deals last few years...
There was talk a year ago about Earnhardt and Ganassi possibly separating in a year or two, but that talk has died down. Nothing big on the horizon. Sorry.
when will junior win?
When will I win a million bucks?
What's the matter with NASCAR's rules? Keselowski gets docked points but still gets the W? If your car fails post-race inspection, you should lose your finishing position.
In case you haven't been paying attention the past 50 years or so this is how it works. Not saying it's right, but it's how it works. Tough to take a win away three days later.
JR will win at the Daytona night race
There you have it. A guarantee from Jeff.
Do you think Nascar should have penalized Newmen for saying Dega isn't a race and shouldn't award points? And since Dale hasn't won at Dega in 6 years do you think it is right for him to say Nascar needs special restart rules at the plate tracks?
Not at all. It's a free country. Drivers can say what they want. Newman and Earnhardt regardless of the circumstances.
I think the new Jr story relates to him stealing some college football coaches wife, who is now Jr's girlfriend. At least that is what my wife told me.
Was there a story in there about aliens invading Jimmie Johnson's body and forcing him to wreck Gordon?
So I am heading to NC for the allstar race. What else should I do while I'm there? I'm thinking the HOF for starters...
The Hall of Fame will be open and is a must. Visit a few shops if you can. Most have special viewing areas that are great for fans. Try the whitewater rapids that the Olympians use to train as well. A great time there.
I want to see Danica, Sarah Fisher, Patty Moise and Shawna Robinson in a match race somewhere. I'm taking Moise by a lap.
Might be a wreckfest.
Did you want the Panthers to take Clausen or McCoy?
I like the Clausen pick. Think he could start right away with the offensive weapons he has around him.
Where do you think Elliott Sadler ends up next year and do you think Bass Pro Shops stays on the #1 or goes to Stewart-Haas?
Don't know on Sadler, but do know Ford wants to see more from him. As for Bass Pro it got a Daytona 500 win out of Jamie. That might convince it to hang around.
We know Coach has JD as 2nd in command at JGR. Who takes over at Henricks when Rick retires?
Marshall Carlson is a possibility. Maybe Jeff Gordon takes over. He says he wants to get into more of a management role some day.
I will win this weekend at Richmond. Count it.
Counted, along with all of your other predictions.
Hey David, what are JPM's chance at the chase this year with his rough start? Do you think any of the big teams will ever try to offer JPM a ride (Not sure he would want to leave now since EGR seems to have a decent car)?
He's not out of it yet. He's had good cars almost every week. just a lot of bad luck. Maybe he's this year's Mark Martin with a big comeback.
Is Terry Bradshaw still involved with that Super Cups Nationwide team? Whatever happened to Troy Aikman's Hall of Fame Racing?
Both haved moved on.
Everyone expects JR. to be his Dad but he's not and thats ok i still support him. He is hated for being the most popular driver and the legends son.
Your points are valid.
Hey Newton, Golf sounds like a great idea today, I think I'll call Mike Bliss and invite him to go with me. Do you have Jimmie Johnson's cell number handy, I think I'll set him up to drive Bliss' golf cart. :)
Trucks do rule.....truck races without Cup guys rule even more!! This is going to be a great week for racing. I would love to see a new guy take the truck race!
I've said this before, I'd like to see the Trucks replace Nationwide as the second series and just run two series. Use the new muscle cars in Cup and not Nationwide.
I have a choice of going to the All-Star race or the 600...probably choosing the All-Star, what do you think?
I agree. Great entertainment on and off the track. Nothing against the 600, but you asked me to pick.
As a Braves fan, is the season already a wash?
Too early to call it that. They have enough talent to rally.
Guess who?? Biffle. How come Biffle doesn't get more respect? I can't find my son a "Biffle" hot wheel car anywhere.
I might be able to help you on the Biffle 3M Hot Wheels car. Not sure he doesn't get respect. He's won a lot of races in all three series.
David, you were talking about covering those gretsports moments. If Oklahoma City wins at home and forces a game 7 you need to head to L.A. Because if Kevin Durant leads them to a game seven win its one of those moments that leads to one of the best Basketball players career.
Tell my bosses.
Back in the day were the DEI cars dominant at the plate races because they had a horsepower advantage and is that why Little Dale can't win anymore?
I wouldn't say he had more horsepower at DEI than he does at Hendrick.
Do you think Kyle will payback Stewert for Stewert wrecking him out last July and stealing his win?
Woudl be fun to watch. What do you think?
I 17 years old what do I need to do to be a nascar reporter?
Go to college. Then Law School.
Hey david, are you in town for the race? if so you should check out the denny hamlin shorttrack showdown tonigh on southside. A lot of sprint cup guys are racing
I am not. I'm at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte. Speaking of that. I've got to get back to my Tiger Woods piece. Thanks for all the great questions. Chat with you next week. Till then . . . FORE!!!
