Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (2:52 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. Thank you so much for showing up, and let's get started a bit early. I have to leave early for a meeting... here we go!

Jon (Chicago)

Javy was just dropped. With Brett Anderson on the DL, should I pick him up. He has been so bad so far, but will he turn it around?

Eric Karabell
  (2:53 PM)

While I am becoming concerned that something is wrong physically with Javier Vazquez, I don't buy into the "pressure" talk. His velocity is down, and that's why he's struggling. I'd add him. I can't fathom a healthy Vazquez being this awful. He was a Cy Young candidate - even in the other league - last season.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Max Scherzer, worth holding onto in a 10-team head-to-head league?

Eric Karabell
  (2:54 PM)

I don't think I would give up quite yet, but then again I wasn't a big fan of his to start with. April was fine, so let's assume he'll have some ups and downs but could finish with a 4.25 ERA and good strikeouts.

The Impaler? (Colorado)

Vlad Guerrero is available in my league. Do I grab him? I could drop EYJ, Rajai or Juan Pierre.

Eric Karabell
  (2:55 PM)

Well, Vlad has more power than those guys combined, even in his old, limping state. Rajai Davis doesn't seem to be doing much these days, does he? I'd say Vlad is worth more than all of these guys at the moment, and you can safely dump one (Young would be first to go) and still have two other steals options.

Little Jerry (NYC)

Hey EK... With Blanton back from the DL, who is more useful going forward??? Dice K, Pineiro or Blanton? Please rank if you would. Appreciate your thoughts.

Eric Karabell
  (2:55 PM)

I can't even put Matsuzaka in this class yet, not until we see a few good starts. In his first outing he was fine for four innings, and then things totally fell apart. I'd go Pineiro, Blanton and then a while later, Dice-K. Pineiro is fine. He'll win 13-plus games.

CK1 (WISCONSIN)

Trade question, who wins this deal? Mark Reynolds & Berkman for Greinke

Eric Karabell
  (2:56 PM)

Impossible to judge. I'd want Greinke, because even if he wins only 10 games, the 2.75 ERA and loads of strikeouts will be terrific. But then again Reynolds is a legit 35-homer guy who runs. Depends on need and what you'd have in reserve to hit for you.

Pablo (NJ)

hey EK- worried yet about Chris Coghlan?

Eric Karabell
  (2:57 PM)

I think we have to be, but a month of sputtering hardly means he can't hit .350 the rest of the way. I have him on numerous teams and am waiting. I'm worried, but being patient.

Paul (Boston)

Follow up to the Cubs and hitting... Does S. Castro have enough bat to make a difference out of the gate? When does that gate open? I want to take a chance on stashing him as I need SS help.

Eric Karabell
  (2:58 PM)

Ryan Theriot has played very well the past week or two, so I do not see this promotion happening in the next few months. I see Castro up in September, unless the Cubs are really out of it. And no, I don't think Castro can help a fantasy team in a 10-team league this season.

Sal (Bronx, NY)

Name game: Brendan Morrow/Jhoulys Chacin/Ben Sheets. Most save name game: Frank Francisco, LaTroy Hawkins, Neftali Feliz, Mike Adams?

Eric Karabell
  (2:59 PM)

Morrow, then ... ugh. Chacin could be in the minors in a week. Sheets has been unusable. And Feliz could be a 30-save closer.. take him first, then Francisco ... I don't see saves for Hawkins or Adams.

Michael (Portland, ME)

Is Jaime Garcia a no brainer sell high? Better for the rest of the season than Harang?

Eric Karabell
  (3:00 PM)

Definitely better than Harang.. .Garcia to me is a top-30 pitcher now. I trust him. Depends how to view sell high, because I think he'll be good all season.

The Big Cubowski (Northbrook, IL )

Love your stuff in both BB and FB, Eric! Am I wrong to be tired of the Brian Roberts soap opera and being ready to cut him loose?

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Thank you! I'm tired of it as well, but it's tough to give up on a potential 30-steal guy from the middle infield. If the Orioles say Roberts needs another month before returning, then I would consider moving on if I couldn't afford the DL/bench spot.

CDep (Sacramento)

Head to head weekly league - can I start Billingsly tonight against the Brewers? Please?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

You certainly can, but let's just say I expect a high scoring game at Chavez Revine tonight... Billingsley is a bit maddening to own...

Adam Lind (Toronto)

What's my deal? Should I be worried?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

You just hit one about 500 feet off Chris Perez... you're fine.

Francisco Liriano (Minny)

Would someone trading Zack Greinke for me straight up come out ahead? We're both the same age and sport roughly the same K's/ERA/WHIP, but I have an edge in wins. Tell me I'm worth more!

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Despite what we have seen so far, I would still choose Greinke over Liriano for the season in sum, and the rest of the way. Both could be top 10 though.

Kim Batiste (1993)

Boy, that Joe Carter can jump! Anyhow, what do you think is a reasonable final stat line for Brian Matusz this year? This kid definitely passes the eyeball test, & looks like a taller (

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Thanks for rekindling those memories! I can see maybe 11-12 wins, ERA around 3.75, 160 strikeouts. Orioles could opt to skip starts when they're 30-100 in August...

Chet (Office Space, MN)

Rick Porcello - buy low candidate or stay away?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Another nasty outing today... definitely worried, don't understand it. Why would he be so much worse than his rookie season? Tigers need to figure it out and fix him, because there is so much ability here. Hopefully his elbow isn't hurt... for now, I can't really buy low.

Anthony (Cali)

Randy Wolf or Kevin Millwood for the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I would take Wolf. Love the K potential, and let's face it, NL vs. AL. And it's Millwood! The Orioles are bad.

Dan (CHI)

Are you buying Gorzy in a 10 team mixed?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

No, I can't say Tom Gorzelanny is at that point yet, but he's certainly NL-only worthy. Part of the problem is one or two bad starts and voila, Zambrano replaces him. It's either Gorzy or Silva...

(not) Jake (the snake) Fox (Bench)

You're touting me so much, but yet I don't get played. What's the deal? When will I start everyday?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

I am touting him, but he's not even hitting when he gets the chance. Frustrating! Still I'd wait in AL-only and deep leagues... he's not 10-team mixed worthy yet, unless he qualifies at catcher soon and you can play 2 catchers...

Bill (Tulsa)

They left Frasor in for the save?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Kevin Gregg is on pace for a LOT of innings... can't argue too much. Final saves for Frasor, 8. For Gregg, 25.

Dan (CHI)

Brett Anderson. Your thoughts........

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Definitely worth waiting for, and this is not a structural injury that would appear to require surgery or a much longer rehab.

Ryan (NYC)

Two questions: 1 fantasy, 1 real life: start Penny tonight vs Phils? And, if Frank Wren calls up Cashman and offers to send Melky back for Vasquez, does Cashman think about it? Thanks for the time!

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Yes, I start Penny in all games. And no, the Braves don't want Javy back, they have 5 starters, which is why they dumped him in the first place. Tradebacks don't occur in real life!

Kevin (Stamford, CT)

Would you trade Tommy hanson for Manny and Franklin morales?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

No, unless I had so many awesome starting pitchers... Morales has little value. And Manny... eh.

James (Cleveland)

Why can't Contreras end up the closer for your Phillies?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I just said at lunch I do see it happening... wait a minute, were you at the cafeteria an hour ago listening? All that stands in Contreras' way is Lidge... it could happen!

The Most Interesting Man in the World (TV Land)

When will Smoak be a good fantasy player?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Any day now... I think he's there now, but the batting average needs another week... He's Helton with pop, now.

Joe (Boston)

Do you think Weiters is a buy low?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Of course, but who would be selling Wieters right now? That's silly!

Peese (Waltham, MA)

Are you drinking the Cliff Pennington Kool-aid????

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Yes, definitely. Always thought he could hit 10 homers with 20 steals, but now that he's leading off, I truly believe it... I blogged about him a few minutes ago!

Dan (Tulsa)

Still predicting under 20 homers for Wright?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I was never anti-Wright... all my blogs said he'd hit 25 home runs... Now I think it might be 30. Apparently he loves hitting fifth for the Mets. Who knew?

Pat (NY)

Soto is the ___ ranked catacher.PS why is he batting 8th?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Soto was in my top 10 in March, and obviously is now. And the Cubs could move him up a bit, but why mess with success.. not like they can bat Aramis eighth, by the way. Second base could hit eighth... but ultimately, why do we care? Just hit!

Paul (Boston)

When Jacoby Ellsbury returns from the DL, how long will it take for him to get back to form and steal bases?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Impossible to know. I'd call him a player to activate right away though...

Frank (Renton, WA)

Hey EK, yesterday Tristan wrote about "sell high" guys like Konerko, AJax, Headley, Soriano... what are you thoughts about that? If noone in your league is biting, you just have to ride out the good stats, and try again in a few weeks right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Yeah, I saw that and agree. I mean, I have Austin Jackson in an experts league, but we ALL know to sell high, so why would anyone do that? What could I possibly get offered? I'm not even gonna try...

Joe (Boston)

Do you like Vasquez over Beckett and Wade Davis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

No, not anymore... I always liked Davis though.

Oscar (Santa Fe Springs)

Gut feeling -- When does Brett Wallace get called up and is he an immediate add in all deep leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I'd say mid-June, and in deep leagues, since he's got a power bat and could hit 5 home runs per month easily, yes, add him.

Eric (CO)

You just touted Mike Aviles a bit today in your blog. Should I drop the mostly worthless Lastings Millege to get him or would you rather have Thome who wont play everyday?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I just can't believe Aviles is as bad as he looked last year.. he had to be hurting. He might not be as good as his rookie year, but still, he's no Yuniesky either. Milledge isn't so great. I'd keep Thome. That's a 25-homer season on the way...

Jonathan (Milwaukee)

When is Alcides going to start running? The free agent SS's (Uribe, Desmond, Peralta) do not excite me much. I need him to start stealing bases!!! I would consider adding Counsell and starting him at this point.

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I see little reason to believe Alcides Escobar is going to start running. I mean, even if he was 1-for-2 in attempts, I'd feel better, but no attempts? Counsell isn't any better, though.

Kristin (San Diego)

Because Asdrubal has a calf injury, Valbuena has to play SS and his first error set up Lind's HR. Dont blame Perez on this "blown save". AC would made that play!

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Did Valbuena allow the 400-foot home run? Just checking... yes, inning could have been over, but Perez permitted the bomb...

Logan (NC)

Has Kershaw gone the way of Edwin Jackson? Say it ain't so EK, say it ain't so.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

No. I would never compare those 2. On the BB Today podcast today I did utter the words Oliver Perez though... I do hope that's not true. It's not. Kershaw is just 22... there will be inconsistency...

Steve (IND)

PLEASE some advice on Ian Kennedy.....

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I like him... seems like a 12-game winner with a 4.25 ERA and better-than-expected strikeout rate to me...

Matt (NYC)

Zobrist? What's going on with him

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

No concerns whatsoever... the power will come.

Steve (DC)

Are you worried about A-Ram or Sizemore? End of year projections?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Worried about both... wrote about A-Ram today, so check it out. On Sizemore, he still looks hurt... ugly start.

Brad (Philly)

Eric, help me get a read on Nate McLouth... is he going to still give me 20/20 this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I will take the under on both, and feel pretty confident about it!

Delfino (Wichita)

Is Halladay a 30-game winner?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I'll say 21 wins... eventually he won't finish every game and no Halladay owner wants to see Lidge/Contreras/Durbin in there in the ninth...

Alex (Queens)

Pierre, Pods or Gardner?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Gardner is absolutely legit... 50 steal guy, decent batting average. No worries. Some worries about Pierre, but not many.. Pods will slow down, but still produce.. .all these guys steal 35-plus.

Oscar (Santa Fe Springs)

Over/under on Markakis 20HR's and 15 Steals?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Under on each...sorry. I just don't see it.

Jason (Bmore)

I know there is no great concern to have with Gordon Beckham, but at this point, we'd have to be realistic to temper a 20 hr season this year, correct?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Yes, I would say the under for now, but I certainly do not give up...

Connor (Sacramento)

I couldnt believe that Barry Zito was still being able to be picked up in one of my leagues. I picked him up instantly. Good move?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Yes. Definitely... OK, 3 more, gotta get to a meeting. Hey, not much I can do here!

Brad (Cincinnati)

Could you list similar 1B in Smoak's tier?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Ahead of Helton and Adam LaRoche and closing in on Derrek Lee territory.

jay (alex, va)

seanrod arriving next year then? is a 260 - 15 - 50 - 50 - 15 too much to ask for this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Yeah, I think it's too much. He just hasn't hit. Maybe more comparisons to former teammate Brandon Wood than we thought!

Jason (Irvine)

Which closer would you rather have for the season...Wood or Hoffman?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Hoffman. I'm really not worried about him...

James George (Sun Valley, CA)

What should we expect from Mike Stanton? I am thinking of getting a jump start and picking him up since I have the roster space to do so? Does he hit right away?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Very few rookies hit right away, especially the strikeout ones...

Jason (Bmore)

Uehara or Simon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Leaning to Uehara actually...stunning.

Bob (Boston)

Do I drop Quentin for Kearms, Maybin, or Garret Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Probably not... but I do think Maybin will be better overall...

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

OK, sorry but my time is up for today. Thanks to all who sent questions and for those reading. I do appreciate it... enjoy the day and get some sun! Adios!
