Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

Hi everyone. Sorry I'm late. Just ran across a news item of NFC North note: Former Minnesota LB Nick Rogers, a draft pick in 2002, was killed this morning in a car accident. Our thoughts are with his family...

Jeff (Mpls)

If replacing Taylor was a number 1 priority, shouldn't the Vikes have looked at a pass catching RB since that's what Taylor excelled at?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

I think they believe Gerhart will be really good at that. He just wasn't asked to do it in college that much.

Shane (Atlanta, GA)

What is the current status and situation surrounding Atari Bigby? Is it likely he is going to be in green bay this year...? next year... etc. and if he is do you see morgan burnett playing any cornerback?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

He's an RFA that hasn't signed his tender yet, but he doesn't have much choice if he wants to play in 2010. The Packers have his full rights. I think he'll be the starter, but I haven't heard anyone suggest Burnett will spending any time at cornerback unless he is somehow involved in an exotic nickel package.

Ryan (Canada)

what do you think about the Bears' running back situation? will Forte regain his rookie form or will someone else step up? can he be like Faulk in the Martz offense?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

He can be "like" Faulk in that he has natural receiving skills. But I don't think Forte or Taylor have the kind of Hall of Fame breakaway skills Faulk did.

Tyler (New Smryna Beach, Florida)

Heyy Seifert its tyler again, got a few things for you. Are the Lions seriously going to go into the season with no strong saftey, no quality veteran cornerbacks and no right outside lineback. Are they in discussions with anyone at this point that you have heard of?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Well, you can't fix every hole in one offseason. At this point, I couldn't tell you who will start at most of the positions you named, although I think Chris Houston is pretty much a lock at one cornerback spot. But the Lions are narrowing it down. Instead of having 8-9 positions up in the air, it's 4-5. That's progress.

roberto (newjersey)

hey kevin do u think the 6th round pick of starks can make the packers.....have u heard anything.....we need an change of pace back...ur thoughts.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Yes, I do think he can (and should) make the team. His draft value was diminished because of a shoulder injury. He didn't play as a senior. If he's healthy, he's a really good running back at that value.

Clay D (NY)

Jahvid Best will just serve as a change of pace running back right?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

Nope. He's the starter unless someone tells me otherwise.

roberto (newjersey)

hey kevin whats the word of adalius thomas coming to the packers....we didnt address that position in the draft and we need to address it soon......ur thoughts..thx

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

It wouldn't fit the Packers' team-building profile, which is a nice way of saying they almost never sign veteran free agents.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

I think they'll at least take a look at Brad Jones there in spring practice.

roberto (newjersey)

hey kevin come on man and agree with me on this one .....i think if favre does come back to the vikings the packers can still win the division....we are the team to beat...just admit it man...lol..

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

Funny you ask that. I would advise checking the blog at 3 p.m. ET for my answer.

Bill (Washington, DC)

Kevin, I've read a lot about Pacman Jones recently. Do you think he'll ultimately end up with the Lions?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Sounds like it's going to be Cincinnati. He's there today going through his second workout with them.

Chris (Milwaukee)

Hey Kevin, I saw a post over the weekend in which you expressed skeptism about the Packers' corners given the health issues. While I certainly agree that it is a concern, the Packers have drafted a number of corners in recent years. Yes, they're unproven, but part of developing a roster is giving 2nd and third year players a chance to prove themselves. That said, I think it's time for the Packers to see what Underwood and Lee can do. Besides, other than the Cardinals game, I thought the big passing games were more the fault of the pass rush than the coverage.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

That's all true. But my point is you can't assume they'll be better than what the Packers had last year just because they're different. There's no hard evidence to conclude the Packers are a better defense with Underwood, Lee and Blackmon than they were with the guys who manned those spots last year.

Pat (So. Ca.)

Hey Kevin,I am confused by the Vikings lack of interest in a long term QB solution. It seems as if they are saying it will be T. Jackson, however they only put a 3rd round tender on him and have not signed him to a long term contract. What do you think is up?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

First of all, they were smart enough to know that no other NFL team would pursue him. And I think that should speak volumes: That in a quarterback-starved league, no one was interested in a 26-year-old part-time starter with a strong arm and good speed. Whoever eventually replaces Favre for the long-term isn't on the roster right now.

Craig (Omaha NE)

Kevin-Give it to us on the up-n-up...what % do you think it is that the Minnesota Vikings will become the LA Vikings? Is this stadium deal going to be the end all for the cold weather version of the Viking?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

I'm saying it's a low percentage... 30 percent? 40 percent ... but there is a lot of work to be done.

Arlen (Aurora)

I understand Lovie Smith's desire to have a 3-technique DT with good pass rushing skills, but why has he been so reluctant to even consider bringing in a veteran brick wall to play nose tackle next to Tommie Harris? Warren Sapp played next to Booger McFarland for a number of years which seemed to work out well. Pat Williams was signed as a free agent to play next to Kevin Williams after his second season, and you as well as anybody has recognized what that pair has allowed Minnesota to do. I don't care what anybody says about the quarterbacks of Superbowl XLI, the Bears lost that game first and foremost because they couldn't stop the run.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

Fair question. Harris was at his best when Tank Johnson was next to him, right? I'm guessing Jerry Angelo thinks that either Marcus Harrison or Anthony Adams could be that guy, but to this point neither has.

james (Chicago)

Kevin i love your blog i read it twice a day always looking for the inside info on my Bears.Based on what the bears have done through the off season, Darft, and trade do you still put them as the 3rd team in the NFC north or are they pulling into a spot at 2. Your thoughs

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

Thanks James ... I think they're better but have too many unknowns to say they're ready to challenge Green Bay/Minnesota. New coordinators, new defensive players. We have to see how they come along.

Josh (Atlanta)

Are there any indications that the Vikes might be leaning towards moving Cook to Safety is Griffin is healthy?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

I wouldn't rule it out. He's a big dude. Saw him the other day. Taller than Al Harris, who is the biggest cornerback I've seen in person.

Tone (Seattle)

What worse for your health? Being tased or being tackled by football players when you run on the field?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

I would choose the taser.

Joe (Detroit)

How big of a jump do you think Stafford makes this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

If he's going to be an elite quarterback, it will have to be substantial ... as in reversing his TD-INT ratio and raising his completion percentage from 53 to about 60.

Colin (Milwaukee, WI)

Kevin, planning on visiting all 4 training camps this year and hopefully watching the Packer's Family Night Scrimmage sans the rain this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

Ha. Yes, I'll be at all four and I expect advance warning next time if there is going to be rain at Lambeau. I also expect advance warning if any TV interview I do gets broadcast live in the stadium during the rain delay. Let's just say that last year I wasn't expecting to tell 40,000 people that the Packers weren't going to win the division.

Bryan (Midland, MI)

Kevin,Do you think the offensive line for the Lions is greatly improved from last year or do you think we will have to wait and see how they play together?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

The offensive line? It's true, we've talked much more about their defensive line. The truth of the matter is the offensive line will be pretty much intact except for the obvious upgrade of Rob Sims at left guard.

Michael Reynolds (Minneapolis)

KS - LOST is the best show since Miami Vice....I feel sick tying that. Anyways, should we expect Toby Gehart as soley a third down back, or will he see some 1st and 2nd carries as well? I'm also suprised by Chilly's comments about his hands and recieving in the back field. Do you forsee any screen type plays like Chester demonstrated over the years? Thanks.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

Yes, it's better than Cats... Yes. If all things are equal, I think he'll fill the Chester Taylor role pretty closely to what Taylor was asked to do. The Vikings have really emphasized Gerhart's hands and his pass-protection abilities.

Nicholas (Kenosha, WI)

I am really enjoying the pain that vikings fans are suffering through like the packer nation did with Brett every year!! That said if Brett decides not to play this year do the Vikings have a chance to legitimately compete or will they be battling for a wild card with Chicago (assuming GNB doesn't fall off the map)?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

I think he will play. But if he doesn't, it will be a franchise-wide letdown and would make the Packers a clear choice to win the division.

Eric (Boston)

People dog the Lions about their poor play over the past few years which is true they have been but don't you think if they could stay even remotely healthy they could contend?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

In some cases talent and health go hand in hand. The best players stay healthy, or at least stay on the field, over time. It's part of the evaluation process.

Waldo (???)

Hey kev, why didnt we hear anything about Sharper and the Lions??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

Most teams were scared off by Sharper's knee, which required microfracture surgery after the Super Bowl.

chris (grand rapids, mi)

Kevin, I'm a big Titans fan who got stuck living in the wrong state. Since Detroit brought in Schwartz, I've found myself actually interested in what the Lions do, and am really optimistic. I was however, really shocked by your article several weeks back stating that Schwartz wanted to work on holding his temper. That's been my only real pet peeve with the guy; he is hardly ever emotional. Don't you think the Lions need a coach who will get fired up a little bit??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

Well, there's a difference between not showing emotion and flying off the handle so thoroughly that you are crazed. He fell in that latter category too often last year.

Joel (Mpls)

Zulgad was impressed with QB FA Perilloux. Purple QB of the future?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

Doubtful. To this point they haven't signed him. I think that was a favor to Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook, who also represents Perilloux.

kim (Wi)

Kevin, What do you think of the comments that Brett Favre made to an named player

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

Not a big deal. The quotes appeared in Peter King's column over on Si.com. Even Peter noted that they were to be taken with a grain of salt.

Jake (Minneapolis)

I think the Packers will look at who they've got at OLB and look closely at the undrafted free agents they brought in. If they feel like they're not good to go at that position they'll more likely trade a back-up player or a late-round draft pick for a back-up LB on another team. Adalius Thomas is getting a little long in the tooth to be signed by them.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:26 PM)

Agreed. Now is the time to see what you have in the young players. You make adjustments between OTAs and training camp, or later, if necessary.

Chris G (Long Island, NY)

Profootballtalk mentions vikes might look to trade for haynesworth if starcaps goes south (decision mid may florio said?)- what do you think about that

Kevin Seifert
  (2:27 PM)

The problem is that whoever loses the mid-May decision is probably going to appeal. From what I've been told, we're nowhere close to seeing the end of this case. So the Vikings might not know anytime soon if they're going to lose these guys or not.

Mike Martz (Chicago)

"Put it in granite" how much would you pay to see the look on Lovie and Angelo's faces when I say whats on my mind?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

I believe a special-order muzzle is on its way to Halas Hall. ... Seriously, Lovie knows Martz as well as anyone. He can't be surprised or upset.

J Rabbi Hubbard (Oshkosh, Wisconin)

What happens in the mind of Favre if he comes back and ultimately shows his age this season and loses twice to the Packers?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

He'll ask for a do-over in 2011.

Eric (Madison WI)

Other than it 'not fitting his team building profile', why is Ted Thompson so against signing FA vets? A Westbrook or Adalius Thomas at a fairly cheap rate seems like a low risk move with big potential upside, even if it's just an experiment for a year (or less). It gets frustrating that TT feels he has to maintain that position of no FAs allowed.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

That's a good question. He's not totally opposed to it as a rule. Last year they signed Ahman Green when things got dicey in the backfield. But all things even close to being equal, I think he likes the idea of a young player growing into a role than a veteran holding his ground in it.

Big Jerm (Gettysburg, PA)

On a chat a couple months ago, I asked about Harvin being the 3rd down back and you said you'd rather him be down field. I'm not gonna argue because he's fantastic either way in my eyes. I did, though, see a stat today that he led all receivers in broken tackles and was third among all players. You wouldn't want him on screens and swings on 3rd down? He broke more tackles than Peterson!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Let's clarify. I have no problem if he is catching a screen or swing pass. But I don't think I want him lined up in the backfield because I don't want him having to pass-protect. As dangerous as he is, teams could take him out of the third-down play by blitzing. That's not a good end result in my mind.

chris (detroit)

i hate when bloggers don't answer my question!!!what do you think the lions are going to do about their LB situation

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

I hate it when people think they've got the only question in the que!!! I think the Lions are going to sit tight for now. They love Levy and Cunningham loves Follett. Spring practice is the time to decide if you're willing to give it a shot with young players. If they need to sign a veteran, they can do it later.

Colin (Milwaukee)

40,000? That's just the people that were at the stadium...not including those watching, myself included. Though you did seem to do pretty good for an obvious off-the-cuff interview.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

Ha, thanks. ...

MAK (The D)

Estimated sack total for big baby SUH and KVB this year please

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

How about 15 between the two of them. That's the over-under.

Ben (Grand Rapids, MI)

It seems as if everyone uses "injury history" in the same breath as Jahvid Best, and yet I've never seen anybody post a vast list of his problems that has led to a bunch of missed games. I'm aware of the one infamous concussion, but were there other concussions or other injuries as well?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

No, that's the big one. But it was big and scary, I guess, and he missed the rest of the regular season because of it.

Josh (Atlanta)

Why do people doubt Toby Gerhart couldnt be a premier back in this league? Is it just because he is white? If you compare him on paper he looks an awful lot like Michael Turner, who is a big powerful runner with 4.5-4.6 speed. So what's the difference?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

Ah, figured it was a matter of time before this question came up on the blog somewhere. We could go on for hours about the race issue. I would suggest there are some preconceived notions about a white running back in the NFL. But I'll also say I haven't heard widespread doubt of his ability to be a feature back in the NFL, either. It's more based on the fact that Minnesota, the team that drafted him, already has an established Pro Bowl starter.

DJ (Chicago)

I feel Rod Marinelli's arrival last year was overrated as something can be seeing how the bear dline only had 2.5 more sacks than last season. IS Mike Tice the real deal or will he live on the pedigree of past players he coached and tell us year 2 is where you see the progress?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

It's harder to judge production from offensive lineman, but I do honestly believe Tice is an excellent line coach. It's been a while since he's done it, but he had pretty good results when he was Dennis Green's line coach in Minnesota.

Slim Shady (8 Mile)

Should I avoid all Pittsburgh fans?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

Nah, he deserved it.

Brandon (Hudson, WI)

Kevin, I think you need to clarify your point about the Packers never signing Free Agents. The Packers Signed Ahman Green, Mark Tauscher, and Chad Clifton over the last 6-9 months. Maybe almost never sign free agents who have never been a Packer, would be better.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

True. Tauscher and Clifton were straight extensions, though. Green had played elsewhere between Green Bay stints.

Joseph (Baltimore)

Peppers owns McKinnie, you think thats factoring into Farve's decision?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

Couldn't be any worse than last year, and he survived that beating. Oh wait, it could happen twice.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

That said... I think the Vikings agreed they should have given McKinnie more help. They won't let him get free shots at Favre in 2010. I don't think.

Austin McGee (Computer Class)

Kevin, Chances of Brian Westbrook being a Cheeshead next season= ______

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

25 percent. See previous discussion about team-building profiles.

Steinar (Norway)

Kevin, what do you think about the Vikings O-line? I think all of the positions except for Hutch at LG need upgrade from what they gave us last year. McKinnie's got a mental problem, and they need upgrade at C and RT, although Loadholt hopefully got the experience he needed last season. Their RG is back-up material at best... Do you think they'll bring in someone later this offseason? Favre probably need some more protection this year

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

No. The time for that has come and gone. I kept hearing they were interested in Florida C/G Maurkice Pouncey in the draft, but he was long gone when the No. 30 pick came up. What you see is pretty much what you're going to get.

Paul (Denver)

True or False- Wooten is the Bears starting right DE within in a year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

If he's the Wooten of two years ago? True. The Wooten of last year? He might not be on the team next year.

Brandon (WI)

Which Undrafted free agent do you think has the best chance of making their respective rosters, NFCN onlym, of course?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

Can't say I'm up on every single undrafted rookie, but the kick returner Green Bay signed out of Miami -- Sam Shields -- is my first-blush answer. Kid ran a 4.19 somewhere. Maybe it was 3.19. He's fast.

MAK (The D)

Do the Lions sniff .500 this year? And do we beat da bears at soldier in our first game?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

I think .500 would be a best-case scenario but is doable. As for beating the Bears at home, that could be tough. But it would certainly signal a new era for the Lions.

Fred (Milwaukee)

And don't forget that Woodson and Pickett were FA signings. Thompson will sign veterans and other free agents if he feels there's value there, but he won't pull a Matt Millen and bring in a bunch of old guys he likes at the expense of good, young players.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Cna't deny any of that. But if you look at the past 2-3 years, there has been almost no impact via free agency or from outside the draft.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

have you ever wanted to slap someone because of undue criticizm?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

No. I'm sure many have felt the same way about me.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Kevin, In reffrence to your article over a new stadium for the Vikings. Who are som local sponsors that might be interested in helping to pay for it?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

The only ones who can legitimately swing it are Hennepin County and Minneapolis. Maybe St. Paul as well. But none of them have expressed interest so far.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

And as a Hennepin County resident, I don't like the idea of paying for the Twins and Vikings stadiums alone while the entire state gets benefit from it.

Nabicus (Thorndale PA)

We gonna see Webb as a "wildcat" QB... the dude can run.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

Possibly. Maybe also on goal-line leaps. Kid has a 42-inch vertical. Legit.

Joseph (Baltimore)

With his job on the line, Lovie can't really let Rod call the plays can he?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

I think he found out that he couldn't do it well himself last year. So he's giving someone else a try.

Eric (Madison WI)

Who steps up as the Packers slot receiver this year? Seems like Jones regressed last year and Jordy has yet to make a big impact.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

Maybe they should use Finley there.

Nick (Detroit)

Could Jason Fox and Amari Spivivey be contributors for the Lions this year or do they need a season to develop

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

I don't think Fox will play unless the Lions have several injuries at tackle. But Spievey could be a starter if he plays well in training camp. There aren't a ton of other options there.

Heather Humeniuk (Owatonna, MN)

Just a general question here: I see sometimes you bloggers answer questions where the fan is like "PLEASE ANSER MY QUESTION!" as their location or at the end of their message. Are you bloggers really more likely to answer their question just because they put that? Because I see that a lot...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Not I, said the fly...

Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay)

What are the odds I get to help win my team a ring within the next 3 years?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

I'd put the Packers in a group of maybe five teams that have a real chance to win the Super Bowl in the next 2-3 years.

John T (Eagan, MN)

On one hand, Chilly and Spielman said they passed on Clausen and McCoy because they didn't think those two were better than the QBs on the roster. On the other hand, they tender Jackson at only a 3rd rounder. Did they really think Clausen was a 4th rounder at best?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

I know that doesn't look good, but it's two separate issues. Jackson was tendered that way because the Vikings didn't think anyone would be interested. But he's better for them in 2010 than Clausen would be, I guess. My problem is they seemed to acknowledge on one hand that Jackson is of minimal value but on the other hand took no steps to shore up their post-2010 situation.

chris (detroit)

who's goin to line up next to KVB, SUH and williams?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

My money is on Cliff Avril, but we'll see...

Michael (Minneapolis)

Sam Shields ran a 4.33 - the 4.19 was in the short shuffle....http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1116667

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

Yeah, I knew I saw that number somewhere. But hey, 4.33 isn't bad.

Joseph (Baltimore)

Hey Kev, is it worth having to cover the Lions, Vikes, and Pack, to get to cover Da Bears?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

Best foursome in the league!

Tony (Omaha)

KS - love the blog, what's your opinion on a possible lockout in 2011, I'd like to hear someone other than Peter King comment on this...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

Well, Peter knows a lot more than I do about it. All I know is that when you're a year out from a possible job action, everything is conjecture and posturing. You can't believe anything that either side says.

The police (Your house)

Hope you said that kid ran a 3.19 maybe as a joke.Cause if not we're hauling you in for the spread of ridiculous misinformation

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

Yes. That was my way of suggesting I didn't know the exact number but knew he was really fast.

Dustin (Houston)

Kevin, Is Childress keeping Brett Favre trapped at the bottom of a well? And do you see Al Harris coming back as strong as he used to be? His training vids look pretty intense.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

Ha. Good one. Agreed on the Al Harris videos. But there's no way of knowing whether he can still run with NFL receivers by watching his rehab. He's a long way off still.

Jim (Quantico, VA)

Hey K-Dizzle, what's cracka-lackin? So I was wondering what you thought about Caleb Cambell coming to the Lions. I think if they're gonna give Follett a chance to start that they'll prolly try to plug him in at the Will or maybe the Sam cause he's so fast. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:59 PM)

Hi yourself. I think they'll probably train Campbell at all of the linebacker spots and hope that he can help them on special teams in the beginning and be a backup on defense. I haven't heard anything suggesting he's a likely starter. People are very excited about him, but let's start with special teams and go from there.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:59 PM)

OK everyone, one or two more questions.

chris (detroit)

do you think mr irrelevant might actually make the team??

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

Apparently Jim Schwartz likes his braids, so you never know.

Jeremy (Ann Arbor)

Wasnt Avril just traded to miami?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

Haha. (I think). That's been rumored all offseason and never came to fruition, unless it happened today.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

OK everyone, thanks so much. Have a great day!
