Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (2:02 PM)

Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to my live chat. I'll get to as many of your quaestions as I can over the next half-hour, and I also have aq question for you: What do you think of the live in-game blog? I enjoy doing it and try to have some fun with it but was just wondering how many f you follow it during the game? Let me know, and let's get started

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear WallyCould you see Roger Maris making the Hall of Fame?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:05 PM)

Mr. Hassan: As a Hall of Fame voter I wouldn't have voted for him during his years of eligibility simply because of the lack of dominant seasons in his record. General rule of thumb for me is 10 years of playing at an HOF level or generally recognized as the best in the game at your position. Don;t think Maris makes that cut. However, you can never predict what the veterans committee will do. What I would like ot see is Selig rollback the single-season and career home run leaders to their rightful owners, Maris and Hank aaron.

alex gonzalez (Santo Domingo, D.R.)

Are the Yankees missing the guys they let go last offseason?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:06 PM)

Mr. Gonzalez: It's a tough day to make that call when Nick Johnson hits a first inning home run but I think the simple answer is they miss Damon in the two-hole but so far, Cano has more than made up for the loss of Matsui at No.5

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What do you think that the Yankees will do with Javier Vazquez since he has been pitching terrible?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:08 PM)

Mr. Fiegler: Since the Yankees are on the hook for $11.5 million for Javy this season, I don;t see them giving up on him any day soon. I do think you'll see him flipflopping rotation spots with Phil Hughes, and eventually, if his struggles continue, wind up in long relief of even in Scranton provided he agrees in order to get his head straight

raul marquez (houston,tx)

Wally I'm in New York weekend of June 12 covering a fight for Fox Sports Espanol... On Friday the Yankees play the Astros I need two tickets for me and my wife... Can you hook up a MEXICAN... Happy cinco de Mayo... thanks raulmarquez712@hotmail.com

Wallace Matthews
  (2:10 PM)

Is this THE Raul Marquez? The best Mexican-American fighter not named Oscar of the past 15 years? What's up, brother? I'll email you and we'll talk. Happy cinco de mayo to you, mi amigo

karl (ny)

Wally, In his prime, how do you think Tyson would have fared against either of the Klitschkos?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:12 PM)

Karl, I think the Klitschkos would have been made for Tyson. Big, robotic and slow. Could not deal with the hand speed or power of the Tyson of 1986. I think the same goes for Lennox Lewis if they meet in their respective primes. Don't think he ever beats Holyfield, however. Too tough

alex gonzalez (Santo Domingo, D.R.)

Hello Wally, Cano's head seems to be in the right place this year with less laziness in play making. Do you think his hot start to the year is for real?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:15 PM)

Alex, I don't think there's any doubt about that, and you hate to point a finger, but the talk was that he and Melky Cabrera were not the best influences on one another. all I know from this year is that Melky is gone and Cano is listening to Jeter and Rivera and A-Rod, guys with great work ethics who always have their priorities straight on game days, and there hase been a tremendous difference in Cano's play both at the plate and in the field. Plate discipline is much better, too. Suddenly, it seems like he "gets" it.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Wally, how much do you miss being ringside to cover a Tye Fields main event on Versus?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:15 PM)

One of the great regrets in my life

John (houston)

What do you think of Mayweather's Claim to be the GOAT?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:17 PM)

Depends on how you define GOAT. If it's Greatest of All Time, there's only one and it ain't Floyd. Mayweather's a very talented fighter but when he wins the equivalent of the Thrilla in Manila or the Rumble in the Jungle or the first Liston fight, then we'll talk

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will we see Curtis Granderson return to Center Field when the New York Yankees play a round of Interleague Games at Yankee Stadium?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:20 PM)

Chris, I don;t think anyone knows when Granderson is coming back. a groin injury, especially for a guy like Granderson who has the ability to go side-to-side in the field and on the bases and isn't afraid, can be a very serious and lingering thing. If we're talking about a less mobile player whose game is not as dependent on his legs, he would no doubt return sooner. The Yankees seem to think Granderson's recovery will tilt toward the longer end of the scale.

Jordan (Washington)

How many games do you think it will take for the lakers to beat utah?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:21 PM)

Is the NBA still going on?

Jed Clampett (Kentucky)

If Mayweather-Paquiao happens, who wins that fight and how?

Jordan (Washington)

yes the lakers are up 2-0 going to utah.

Kevin (Dallas)

Will the Yankees run away with the dvision?
