Hey everyone -- I'm here in the press box at Citi Field, ready to roll.
Fire away with questions. I'm covering the Mets-Giants game tonight for ESPNNewYork.com. But my main beat is college sports, so feel free to send questions on that as well.
is jason bay ever going 2 get into the swing of things in the Queens?
I think he will, Jeff. Is he going to put up numbers as good as he did in Boston last season? Probably not -- Citi Field is a very different, pitcher's park. But Bay is a very streaky hitter. I'd really be surprised if we didn't see a power surge from him soon.
Got the Mets lineup for tonight, by the way...
Angel Pagan (CF), Luis Castillo (2B), Jose Reyes (SS), Jason Bay (LF), David Wright (3B), Jeff Francouer (RF), Ike Davis (1B), Rod Barajas (C), Mike Pelfrey (RHP)
Francouer moves up to 6th in the lineup, and Davis down to 7th, since they're facing a left-hander, Jonathan Sanchez.
How much longer do we have to watch Reyes struggle in the 3-hole before we can chalk this up to a failed experiment for Jerry?
Let's face it, Reyes hasn't hit very well in either spot so far this season. But who do you put in the 3-hole then? David Wright again? Then you're back to square one. I'd give Reyes a few more games there. Pagan hit .364 on the Mets' six-game road trip...I'd leave him alone there right now.
Are the mets worried at all about pelfrey in this start?
I'd say the Mets brass are definitely a little nervous about Pelfrey tonight -- naturally, after he went for the MRI. The Mets absolutely need Pelfrey healthy in order to compete this season. They probably need another quality starter as well via trade down the road. But a healthy, effective Pelfrey is a must.
How much longer before we see top prospect Fernando Martinez get called back up to the show, Kieran?
Barring an injury, I don't see that happening in the very near future. As I said, Angel Pagan is doing a solid job right now -- and Gary Matthews Jr. is still there as the fourth outfielder. Jerry Manuel doesn't sound like he's ready to give up on Matthews, even though he's struggled -- he's actually talked about giving him more regular at-bats to see if he can break out of his slump, maybe by spelling Francouer and Bay on back-to-back days.
Why is David Wright hitting so well right now?
He is hitting well -- four homers in his last six games. He hit his seventh homer of the year on May 4th -- last year he hit his eighth home run on August 5th, if you can believe that. The simple answer? Wright is a good hitter! He had a down year a year ago, but that should be nothing but an aberration.
What are your predictions for the Red Storm this year? Is Lavin going to work some magic and bring us back to the tourney?
Gotta get at least one college hoops question in! Well, Lavin has picked up his first recruit -- Dwayne Polee Jr. from Los Angeles, who is an excellent athlete, and was considering several other prominent programs, like Georgia, UNLV, Oregon and Arizona. And he's got some talent on his roster already. It's going to be very interesting to watch next season -- it's early, but I think they could be an NCAA tournament team. But the more important question is, long-term, can Lavin consistently attract big-time recruits -- both local kids and out-of-towners. That remaains to be seen.
OK folks, I've got to run, the Mets' clubhouse is opening up soon. Thanks for the questions, and we'll do a longer chat next time. Thanks!
