Good to be back from Montreal and back with you! A lot to discuss on the heels of UFC 113, and we've also got a large Strikeforce show this weekend. Off the top, just want to thank you all for the overwhelming support of MMA Live on ESPN2. It was a thrill and hopefully we added to the overall experience for MMA fans. Here today until about 1:45 ET, so let's vent...
Looking great on ESPN2! Hopefully the show will get a better time slot. It certainly deserves to be prime time.
Thanks, Evan. Hope you also got a chance to check out the live pre and post-fight shows on ESPN2. MMA deserves that type of coverage.
Do you think Anderson Silva Vs. Shogun at 205 will happen now?
I don't think it'll happen right now. But Shogun's win has a ripple effect and a good one. It clears the way for Silva to eventually move up to 205. Just not my expectation that it will happen right away.
Nice work on ESPN2 before and after the PPV!
Thanks Jason! What a rush doing shows up there in front of the best MMA fans in the world.
Do you think Koschek will fair any better than the last time he fought GSP? I don't.
It's tough. Even though Kos has improved quite a bit, GSP has improved exponentially. I am a Koscheck fan and I have no doubt he will try to push the pace as best he can. But I don't expect it will end well for him.
Hey Jon, thought you guys did great on ESPN2 last week. Any early results on how much viewership it generated?
Thanks, Doug. Not sure on ratings at this point, but in terms of the stuff we can control, we were pretty satisfied. There are a lot of elements to those shows and some chaos that fans never see. But overall, I thought the shows translated well and really enhanced the UFC viewing experience, to have live pre and post-fight coverage on ESPN2.
And the UFC really got the machine behind us, which absolutely helped the cause.
Where is everyone?
We're here man.
Who do you have fighting Shogun next, Evens, Rampage, Kimbo Slice (well maybe not Kimbo)?
It will be the winner of Rampage-Rashad.
Hey Jon. I noticed that the MMA Live post-fight show got to use clips of the actual finishes. I thought that was a great step forward, but is that going to continue on the normal MMA Live's?
I'm not sure. A lot of that had to do with the fact that we were on TV, as opposed to the Internet. Pretty cool nonetheless.
Do you think A. Silva can beat Shogun?
Great job with the post-fight show at UFC 113. Was nice to hear from some of the fighters as well as getting Dana's perspective on the event. Will this be something ESPN is looking to do regularly now that MMA Live is on TV or just for special events?
I'm not the guy to ask, Steve. But I'm hopeful that someday we are covering every major PPV with pre and post-fight shows.
So what were your initial reactions to the Paul Daley sucker punch of Koscheck and were you surprised that Dana White let him go?
Very forgettable moment for Paul Daley. Regardless of the trash being talked by Koscheck, you just can't lose your head like that. That one instance will severely hurt his career and earning potential. I'm not surprised Dana White made an example of him and cut him immediately. We've really never seen anything like that in the UFC, and the UFC is trying to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Who is the logical next opponent for mitrione? He could make a good fight with Kong if he gets his conditioning up
Looks like he will fight Joey Beltran, and I think it's an appropriate fight to put together. Beltran has a slight edge in experience and is the more technical fighter. Mitrione still needs some seasoning.
What is Mitrione's ceiling? I was actually impressed with his skills, game plan and progress since TUF.
I don't ever see him as a UFC heavyweight champion. But he can definitely make a little run. Cardio/conditioning will have to improve. And I can't make too much of a win over Kimbo Slice. Mitrione was on our post-fight show and acknowledged making several mistakes. He won't get away with those against almost any other UFC heavyweight.
How is it possible that you did not ask Koscheck about the faking incident on Saturday? I was screaming at my TV.
It was an oversight. Plain and simple. The post-fight punch became the much bigger story, obviously, and we had to hammer the GSP angle as well. Florian touched on the illegal knee in the highlight, saying it grazed him and opened up a cut. But we should've gone back to it. Can't win 'em all.
Jon, gut feeling - Do Mayweather & PacMan get it on in November? Did you save enough money from the Money-Mosley fight to buy tickets for the megafight?
I won't be at the fight, but it will happen in 2010.
any news on rashad's game plan for rampage???
Nothing that I can reveal in this space. But you'd have to think he will go for takedowns to shorten the amount of time the fight is on the feet.
Chost, great job on the pre and post-fight coverage. I'm glad the UFC didn't show prelims on SPIKE-TV and gave MMA Live the green light it needed. Any idea for a future schedule?
We will definitely do a one-hour post-fight show from UFC 114. That will be from 1-2AM ET on ESPN2. Preview show, at this point, will be on ESPN International channels and ESPN.com. Will keep you posted.
Do you think it would be beneficial for Machida to explore new trainers. I picture him mostly training with his father and brothers for the most part and I don't think they are the best options if you want to continually improve. I know he does train with BlackHouse but I think he should train with other trainers/fighters.
Not a bad suggestion. But I wouldn't totally overthink it after just one professional loss. Shogun appears to have his number.
Do you know what happens to Huerta now that he lost in the tourney? Is he signed for any sort of extended thing with Bellator that requires him to enter the next season's tourney, or fight in their "superfights" or whatever? Or is he back on the open market/back to acting?
I think this is a blow for Bellator. Even though the essence of the tournament is for lesser-known fighters to capitalize on the big stage, Huerta is a huge investment. And the fact that he is out of the mix until September or so is just too bad. Looks like he'll compete in Japan in the interim. Also not sure Bellator will do a lightweight tournament in Season 3. So perhaps there will be a super-fight for Huerta. Not sure how they'll proceed.
Big Country vs. Junior Dos Santos. I think its a great matchup but a lot of people are complaining its a step down for JDS. What do you think?
I wouldn't call it a step down. Roy Nelson is an emerging contender.
Is there any real significance to the Liddell-Franklin fight?
Not really. For Liddell, a win over Franklin would make him relevant again. Not sure what a win over Liddell does for Franklin. It'll be nice to tell his kids about. But Rich needs to fight contenders, or at least guys who are on an incline at 205.
is it time for Kimbo to shave the beard? He is a scrub
I think it's time for Kimbo to get into boxing, or just go back to the streets. He just can't hang with high-level MMA fighters. Mitrione is still green, and Kimbo looked completely out of his league.
still think we will never see silva v machida?
Still think it's doubtful. Anderson is a stubborn man.
Gun to your head where do Kimbo and Daley each end up fighting next
Kimbo will fight for a smaller, local promotion in Florida. Paul Daley may end up with Strikeforce. I'd be shocked if Bellator went anywhere near Daley after that display.
I'm gonna Paul Daley finals week!
Best of luck, kid. Best of luck.
If Rampage takes out Rashad, do you think he'll have a chance of beating Shogun? Shogun really took it to him in their first fight.
I'm just not sure how committed to MMA Rampage still is at this point. There is no doubt he will be trained and focused for the grudge match with Rashad Evans. But clearly there are other ways for Rampage to make money. Just not convinced his heart or mind are in MMA long-term. And they better be against Shogun, who looks to be returning to dominance.
Will Strikeforce go after Kimbo?
Not my expectation. I think it's just asking for disappointment. I understand the name recognition and marketability, but he just can't hang.
Jon, Any plans to do Pre and/or Post fight shows for the upcoming UFC's? I can't tell you how much it enhances the experience for the fans. Seeing shogun on your set, on ESPN2!!, telling us minutes after he won the title that he would fight Anderson Silva. That right there is priceless. You guys better have that setup for 116. Can't wait to see Brock break down his destruction of Carwin!!
Thanks, Dave! Wish I could give you a concrete answer. All I can tell you is that we will be in Las Vegas for UFC 114. And I'd imagine we will be there in some capacity for Lesnar's return. I hope we're on ESPN2, but that hasn't been determined yet.
hector lombard fights tomorrow you gona watch? i got lombard by ko 2nd rd
I will be watching the Boston Celtics, but will have the DVR set! Lombard is the dude.
You think Kimbo could hang with high-level boxers?
No. But I'd rather see him in a striking-only sport. I have no interest in seeing Kimbo Slice in MMA. Not even against Herschel Walker.
I was surprised you didn't press Dana White more on the issue of St. Pierre only fighting twice in 2010. I know the show is important but he is not somebody who needs the visibility to promote his brand (like Serra and his schools, he is already a rockstar). Also, you don't need to build up a St. Pierre fight over a TUF show. Should skip St. Pierre on the show have him fight in both August and the NY Eve show. Shields should be his 2nd fight and this schedule would let him get his feet wet in the UFC.
I pressed him on it as best I could, but there just wasn't time for a follow-up there. I'm disappointed we won't see GSP until December, but Georges isn't looking to fight all that often. He is content to defend the belt 2-3 times/year and the decision to go on TUF speaks to that.
Yo Jonny! Loved the first espn2 show!!! Call me crazy but i think Bones AND Spider will get destroyed by Shogun. You know i called him to win since the first fight. Scary good
Thanks dude. I am hugely impressed with Shogun, but still think Jon Jones has a great chance against any 205er in the world.
Kimbo cannot hang with mid level boxers
Agreed. But he's gotta do something! And you can be sure someone will give him a chance.
why is it that the uk fighters cant stop the takedown? do they not care about the wrestling part of mma?
It's a trend you simply can't ignore. Pat Miletich, who will be on MMA Live tomorrow, talks about it all the time. I'm not sure what the answer is.
Chost, two questions: What are your predictions for Strikeforce on Saturday? Do you think James Toney will have more than 1 UFC fight? Also, I loved the MMA coverage on ESPN2 last weekend. It was really terrific. I just hope the Canadiens don't make a liar out of Josh Koscheck in Game 7 tonight...
Strikeforce predictions: Brett Rogers, Arlovski-Big Foot is a toss-up, but I'll take AA. I like Jacare, Roger Gracie, and Antwain Britt, b/c Miletich loves that guy. As for James Toney, his UFC career will be short-lived. Just don't see how he gets anything done against a veteran like Couture.
would you be mad if you were bones jones and getting no quality fights?
No. I think Jones is actually appreciative that the UFC is proceeding slowly with him. He's gaining invaluable experience that will assuredly help him when the competition stiffens. I just hope, as a fan, that the process speeds up soon. Because I think he's ready to face the elite right now.
How far away is Todd Duffee from getting into the Heavyweight Belt mix?
He must stay healthy and string 3-4 wins together. He also needs other guys to drop out of the mix, whether it be Roy Nelson or Pat Barry. A loss by either one of those guys could expedite his climb.
Did you by chance see the latest TUF series episode? Cort McGhee landed more effective punches, and was robbed in a lopsided manner against Ring. What the heck happened?
I didn't see it, but I've heard similar sentiments. Will try to get caught up on TUF by next week, but no promises.
Any predictions for your boy Ricardo Mayorga's fight this weekend? (assuming Don King doesn't get it cancelled)
I expect the fight will go on, and all MMA fans should be rooting hard for Din Thomas. Mayorga is a nut, and I'm curious to see how he'll respond to adversity, such as an armbar attempt.
any news on a johnny hendricks opponent? he has impressed me in his short ufc run.
I believe we were on the air when his prelim was going on, so I haven't seen it yet. I've got my eye on Hendricks as well, Chase.
jon, why dosent alan belcher get the recognition e deserves ? i train with him n mississippi, hes a togh dude and his legs r like tree trunks. lol
Wins like Saturday night should propel Belcher. He is definitely in the mix of middleweights whom I expect to make a serious run in 2010. It would help him if Anderson Silva vacates the title, or even loses it to Chael Sonnen.
My latest conspiracy theory is that Shogun won the belt so Dana could have him fight Silva for the title since Silva and Machida would not have fought.
I'm not buying it, but Rua's win really helps the division from a matchmaking standpoint. Shogun's training was interrupted with appendicitis, so it's scary to think how good he could've been without that variable.
Who does lil nog need to fight to get the rematch with shogun?
Not Jason Brilz!
Overeem is a freakin monster. he will destroy the brawling Rogers by his trademark knee to the face. mark it down.
I respect your opinion and respect Overeem. But if you've followed my chats at all, you know I think Brett Rogers is legit. Sick power and I think he is quick learner. He will back up my talk this weekend.
Jon, am i being shunned because i made a comment about your tie? Btw the knot was a little too big for national TV.
Not at all. Just moving through questions as fast as I can. Thanks for the fashion advice.
Hey JA, it was awesome to meet you at the 113 weigh-ins...it's great to see how approachable the fighters and media are. Thanks my man!
Good to see you too, Nik. Always wish we had more time to mingle with the fans. Without you guys, MMA Live wouldn't exist.
yeah, overeem is a freakin monster, a freakin' 'roid monster
Whats up next for Machida, he's had a pretty big hole in his game exposed?
Rebuild confidence. He just didn't look comfortable at all Saturday night. Regardless of his next opponent, the focus for Machida has to be internal. Clean up his own house.
Does Machida get a rematch, whats next for him?
No. I don't think the UFC has any interest in running it back a third time. Part of the reason is because Shogun really beat Machida twice, even if the records say otherwise.
PAC OR MAYWEATHER??....WHO YOU GOT AND HOW??
I waver like the wind on this fight. I think Pacquiao will have some success and connect at times. But he better get Floyd early, b/c when Mayweather gets comfortable, he's the best in the world. Technically speaking, he's on another level.
Chost, you think we will see any standup when Kos and GSP fight, or will it be on the mat?
I think GSP could be more willing to take risks against Koscheck than he was against Dan Hardy. But I'm still expecting a 25-minute wrestling match.
Is LeBron leaving Cleveland?
A lot of people inferred that his mind was already made up. I always thought his decision would be based upon how the Cavs finished this season. If Cleveland loses to Boston, I think he's gone. And wouldn't that be (not)funny if the Celtics facilitated Lebron's move to the Knicks?
This is MMA chat and you have answered 3 boxing questions and ignored all of my legit MMA questions.
All I've seen from you today are complaints! These questions come in about 25 per minute. Ask me one dude.
Phil: I agree. For regional TV knot size was fine, but for National no way. Jon you overstepped the mark with that knot.
Hahahahaha. I guess I appreciate how focused you are on my attire. But I taught Rashad how to tie the knot, so give him heat, too.
Who is Dos Santos fighting next?
Big Country Roy Nelson. And I'm not sure it's gonna be as easy as people think.
Smokin' Joe gets smoked this weekend. Do you have any hope for your boy?
I tend to agree with you and think it's a very difficult matchup for Villasenor. Just not sure where his advantage is in the fight.
Jon, Most iconic moment in MMA?
For me, it would have to be one of the early moments involving Royce Gracie. The notion of a guy that size beating a heavyweight is what truly got the masses to tune in.
Am I the only one that thought Sam Stout clearly beat Jeremy Stephens?
Not the only one. But I was happy Stephens got the decision that I thought he deserved. I scored it 29-28 for Stephens.
I predict that UFC will have a lower buy rate than 113 due to only one Solid fight that will get the casual fan $$. you thoughts?
I would actually go the other way. I think the anticipation of the rematch, coupled with Kimbo Slice, will drive a pretty good PPV number. My guess is about 600,000 buys.
Dos Santos - Nelson: Easy for whom?
Just saying that Nelson is better than a lot of people think. And I won't be surprised if Roy gets some things done and takes Dos Santos into the third round. Not picking him to win the fight, but he's crafty and he's well-rounded.
is huerta ever going back to the ufc?
Highly doubt it.
Is Rashad Evans going to cut to 185 after losing to Rampage? he looks undersized at 205.
He will never fight at middleweight. Granted, he is small for 205 and only weighed about 217 on set for MMA Live. But he is the former UFC light heavyweight champion, and has no desire to move down to 185. He likes not having to cut a bunch of weight.
PPV buy prediction for Lesnar-Carwin? I think minimum 1 mil more likely 1.5m.
I think it'll be right around 1.5 million.
did you see alverez last thursday he looked good on the ground with ground and pund and his rear naked choke
Haven't seen it yet, but nice for Alvarez to get yet another submission win. He's clearly out to prove that he's not just a striker. Mission accomplished.
Chost great job during your pre and post fight shows. I started watching a little late and heard you say that the first 30 minutes of the show didn't go to well. What happened?
Hahahaha. I was just making a joke w/ GSP about pressure. Nothing happened. Thought the shows were pretty smooth overall and I appreciate the kind words.
who is on mma live tmw?
Florian and Miletich in studio. Also, interviews with Alistair Overeem and Brett Rogers. And we'll also interview Andrei Arlovski for the longer version on ESPN.com. Rogers and Overeem will both be on ESPN2.
jon, i think mma live is the best move espn could have made. and does lesner actually have a shot at beating the real monster of the heavy weight division in carwin
Thanks, Heathen! Lesnar definitely has a shot. But it'll be the best combination of power and wrestling he's ever faced. Many believe it to be his toughest challenge in the UFC. Can't wait for July 3!
Was that atmosphere pretty awesome for the PPV? And did GSP get the loudest reaction from the crowd?
Atmosphere was ridiculous! Those fans are crazy for MMA. And of course GSP's ovation trumped the rest.
Awesome job at UFC 113. When you guys gonna go live again to cover another event with a pre and post fight?
We will be at UFC 114 later this month. One-hour post-fight show on ESPN2 after the PPV.
Jon, I disagree with your assessment of Toney's chances against Randy. I think if Randy doesn't try or succeed in getting a takedown early he would get dominated as MMA fighters simply do not have the striking skills of a boxer. However, Toney has no real long term future.
I hear ya, Alan. Toney is certainly the best boxer to ever put on a pair of 4 oz. gloves. And if he can avoid Couture's clinch/takedowns early, he might be able to land. I just think Couture is too savvy to get caught up in that mess.
Jon im gonna drop you my email dont expect a response but if you do it will be cool to stay in touch buddy. Vanny485@yahoo.com
Send e-mails to firstname.lastname@example.org. I do my best to respond to every personal email.
I've heard Overeem won't touch the steroid issue...have you been told by him or his camp to avoid those questions tomorrow?
Haven't gotten that memo yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow. If he's not on the show, you'll know why!
Is McNeil doing a "Phoner" tomorrow?
Not exactly sure about the F-Mac tomorrow. Miletich will likely be in his seat in Bristol.
On Anderson Silva, do you think the past couple of lack luster fights he's been in are more because he's become bored, or just too cocky for his own good? I, for one have become a bit turned off to buying another pay per view with him headlining. Is it something you see that he'll overcome with better competition?
I do believe it will be overcome with better competition. There's just no way he can pull that act when he's in there against a true threat. Or maybe he is that good.
Who do you consider the best fighter to come out of TUF? Gotta boil down to Kenny and Rashad right? With Forrest in the mix.
I think you'd have to say Rashad Evans, as a former champion. Forrest also won the title. And Florian should definitely be in the conversation.
Do you think Rua will be able to defend the LHW title more than once? That division is so stacked and the fighters have been playing hot potato with the belt...
Yeah, he's the 6th LHW champion in the UFC since 2007. But I think two straight title defenses is definitely a possiblity. Just depends on the opposition, his health, etc.
when is the MMA fantasy game coming back?
Glad you asked. MMA Live Pick 'Em returns for UFC 114. Game should be up later this week. Appreciate your patience.
Do you go in hoping St. Pierre loses every time he fights so he stops holding the Welterweight title hostage?
Not at all. I think dominant champions are great for MMA and almost all other sports. I'd like to see some more aggressiveness in the striking game, but not rooting for his reign to end.
Jon, Mayweather will beat Pacquiao in a similar fashion to how he beat Mosley. He will take the early onslaught until he figures out Pacquiao's speed, and then he will time his movement and punching. By the fourth round Mayweather will dominate as Pacquiao has suspect defense.
I am a proud American and I hope you're right. Also think that win would do wonders for Mayweather's legacy, and give his naysayers something to chew on.
So much for the Machida era.
Chost if your are concern for Rashads saftey you will stand in his corner with a towel ready to be thrown in thanks and have a good text
Don't seem to be a lot of fans picking Rashad. All I can say, in terms of inside insight, is that he's never looked stronger and the weight cut won't be an issue at all. Evans is prepared. And he also doesn't text and drive nearly as much as he used to.
Hands down the best fighter to come out of TUF was Jason Guida.
I had him 4th on my list.
What up Chost? Sorry, I'm really late! Do you think if the UFC signs Jake Shields he will make his UFC debut in London against Hardy?? If so who takes it? Thanks and you looked hot on Saturday night :))
Hahahaha. Thanks, Kate! I think a fight with Hardy would be perfect for Shields' UFC debut. I'm convinced that Hardy can beat some of the elite welterweights, and that would be a nice opportunity for him. I picked Hardy to beat GSP, so why stop now?
Will franklin ever tell dana no? He seems to put whats best for his career aside whenever dana calls.
Good point. You've gotta think Rich Franklin is being taken care of financially. He is the consummate good soldier. This time, he put his foot down and said he wanted to fight only contenders, only to bail the UFC out once again when Tito went down.
I'm gunna grind up yo meat Chost. I challenge you to a fight on the set of MMA Live. Believe dat!
At least in that fight you'd deserve to be the favorite.
what's next for Mir? I hear he is ducking Roy Nelson.
Who told you that? Mir isn't one to duck anyone.
Hey C-Host Nice job on mma live post show and on ESPN2!! I picked shogun twice to beat lyoto, any idea why so many were favoring machida in rematch?! I mean shogun damaged machida first go round! thanks
Good call. Not sure why I was on Machida in the rematch. I guess I just thought he would make the necessary adjustments. Clearly, he was intimidated by the first fight, and looked lost almost from the outset. Thrilled for Shogun. He was in his element on our post-fight show. Ear to ear.
Hey Jon I got into Harvard! What are some good cheap hole in the wall kind of places to eat in Cambridge/Boston?
Congratulations! Boston is a great restaurant city. Make sure you hit up that North End.
Why does everyone believe that who Dana White says is the next biggest thing, like machida, becomes the one who everyone backs? And few fights later, he's beat. Talk about too much influence.
Dana's words are quite powerful. But he wasn't the only one who thought the Machida Era would last awhile. That's what made Saturday night so great.
When can I get your autograph?
Whenever you want. It's actually free.
Alright, fools. Must go prep for MMA Live. Please watch ESPN2 live tomorrow at 10 PM PT/1 AM ET, or set those DVRs. A longer version hits espn.com immediately after the ESPN2 show. And once again, can't thank you enough for the support this past weekend. You all drive the bus. Until next week, don't text and drive. -JA
