Hello there! Welcome to another fantasy baseball chat session. I am Eric, we've got a full hour today, so thank you for joining me and let's get right to the questions...
Better for this year, Buchholtz or Mateuz?
I say Buchholz overall. For one, the Red Sox have a better team so Buchholz should win more. I do like Matusz, but the Orioles are not good, and while the peripheral numbers for these two youngster could be similar, Buchholz should get more wins and also not be shut down early due to innings.
I've been holding on to Grady Sizemore all season, and I am just about fed up. Do you think there is any chance he will turn it around in 2010, or should I dump him now?
Well, I wouldn't dump him yet, but certainly I have concerns with his lack of power, speed and the high strikeout rate. It's ugly. It's also too early, but certainly if I was re-drafting today, he'd be nowhere near anyone's top 50...
SHould I trade Carlos Lee & Headley for Carlos Gonzalez
It seems like a lot to spend, but then again I trust Lee will hit more than 20 home runs this season. Sure, his bat has slowed some, but he was fine last season. Seems like just a bad start to me, and he's been better in May. Gonzalez is probably the best player in the deal, but it seems lopsided.
Why are people still freaking out about David Wright's start? The guy is on pace to go 30-30 with over 100 rbi and hit close to .300. What am I missing?
I don't know why people are upset. He's been very good. The strikeouts mean nothing to me, nothing at all. If he's able to keep hitting for average, then the K's are obviously not an indicator of a Mark Reynolds-type batting average problem. And he runs, of course. I like Wright.
OK, so I drafted both Adam Lind and Ben Zobrist because of their power and dual position eligibility. So far, their collective lack of production is discouraging. Should I hold on to either of them, hoping for a turn-around?
I'm waiting on both. I'm not worried about either guy. But it's your team, panic if you like!
Rank'em for the rest of the season especially H2H playoffs: Porcello, Cecil, Leake, Holland? Points for QS and Ks
I still say it's Porcello then Leake... then Cecil, Holland. Holland hasn't even pitched yet in the bigs this season! I think Porcello will be fine, and he showed it today. Last May he was 5-0... patience.
would u drop dotel or qualls to pick up contreras?
It certainly appears that the Phillies will have to give Contreras the save changes now that Brad Lidge has been sent back to Philly for tests on his elbow. Unbelievable. No Lidge, no Madson... I would not drop Dotel or Qualls for him, not yet. I could see Contreras being more valuable than both by next week though.
do you start or sit Wandy Rodriguez vs. St. Louis tonight ?
Decent career numbers against the Cardinals and in their place, so while he's struggling just a bit, I'd leave him active.
Is FranK Francisco dropable in mixed leagues now? How long is Feliz's leash?
I don't see Francisco figuring into the save picture anytime soon. Feliz blew the save Tuesday, but has generally been very good and reliable.
EK! Someone just dropped Franklin Gut...would you drop Alexei for him if you already have Bartlett? Thanks!
Why would someone cut Gutierrez? He's off to a very good start... yeah, I would cut Alexei Ramirez. He looks awful, isn't running... maybe he's a lot older than we thought, who really knows.
Pittsburgh got shut out again. Is this more a reflection on Cueto and Bailey or are they this bad?
I think it's the Pirates... not to be negative about Cueto and Bailey, but there was little reason to expect outings like these. I mean, Bailey wasn't walking anyone, everything was a strike today! It might be the best strike percentage in a game ever! I digress. The Bucs have issues...
You owe Pod Vader an apology for calling him an idiot during Monday's podcast of Baseball Today.
I don't think I do... he'd probably call me the same thing, and he wants that as a part of the show. But thanks for downloading and listening...
Derek Lee, Billy Butler, Justin Smoak. How would you rank these 1B for the rest of the season? Thanks.
Butler first, but then it's tough... for now I still say Lee, because Smoak is struggling, but it shouldn't be long before the order changes.
Hey EK,Thanks for your note yesterday about Ben Zobrist - it helped ease some tension. Unfortunately, I have been plagues with Zobrist, Berkman, A-Ram, Holliday, and an injured Suzuki on the roster. I have Callaspo plugging in for A-Ram but I fear my offense is slipping away. What should I do?
Those guys will all hit, so think about how awesome it will be when your team makes its meteoric rise in the standings... I have a team or two like that, with strugglers, and while it sucks, you just gotta wait it out...
You think Lidge is DL bound?
Now I do. On Monday I didn't... On Tuesday I didn't... but the have a double header today and they're flying him home... it's not to get a cheesesteak... it's gotta be bad news. Get Contreras now... amazing.
Would you deal Austin Jackson for Adam Jones? Jackson seems like a sell high but Jones worries me.
Jackson might be the quintessential sell high guy, but man, Jones looks awful. If I thought Jackson would hit 10 home runs I'd take him over Jones... but I don't think he will. SO, I still take Jones.
Eric, What do you think about J. Rollins as he makes his way back? Is the calf issue going to be a problem all year and will it hamper his sb's?
No, I don't think it will be a lingering problem. What I want to see is whether Rollins keeps taking walks. If he does, then I trust every part of his game. If he does not, then it's 2009.
Rank 'em, por favor: Slowey, Olsen, Harang, Vargas, Ely.
For now, I rank them the way you wrote it. Too early to trust Ely. I do think Harang is so ordinary from years of abuse on his arm that Olsen is better.
Dice-k had a nice outing last night. I have him on my dl still and was waiting for him to turn it around. Is he gonna be good to go the rest of the season and what kind of numbers do you project?
He pitched very well... but I need to see what he does next Monday at Yankee Stadium on ESPN... not really a plug, but would I use Dice-K there.. no, not yet. I could see double digit wins, good K rate, ERA around 4.
Meek or League going to be closing soon?
I think Aardsma is still safe in Seattle - hopefully he's not asleep in the clubhouse. In Pittsburgh, Dotel remains the guy, for now. I say Meek closes before League.
Vazquez looked real today. If he can do the same on his start is he considered more or less fixed?
Want to see a few more starts, especially at home, but yeah, you should be buying low. He's too good to be this bad.. the velocity was back, for whatever reason, today. I don't buy the problems are caused by too much pressure...
You kinda left the door open on the Lidge issue. You were "high" on him before this injury. What do you think now? I know it's early, but good fantasy owners can't wait for things to play out. They must be proactive. Is Lidge worth owning over any other closer? I have him rostered on a few teams and it's getting to be a painful loss of roster space. In your mind, does he still have that upside you've been predicting?
I was high on him Monday when I thought he was healthy. Everything changed. My gut tells me he hits the DL again and we don't see him until July...but I'm hoping this is just precautionary. I'm not real optimistic.
I'm in love with Jason Heyward, is there something wrong with me?
To each his own... I think we all, well, kinda love the guy... It will look ridiculous when singles-hitting Chipper replaces Heyward in the No. 3 lineup spot. It should be Heyward's now, and for the next decade.
Am I waiting too long to cut Borbon for Pierre?
Yeah, should have been done weeks ago...
Lindstrom is pitching better than expected. He keep it up or Lyon going to take closer spot from him at some point this year?
No, the way Lindstrom has surprisingly looked, I doubt Lyon gets a chance to save games.
EK, I have no open DL spots, would you drop Lidge for Contreras? Other drop options could be Kazmir, Chacin (dont really want to), Latos, Kennedy, E Santana. 12 team league.
Nah, I think you have to wait until Lidge's elbow gets checked. In theory, he could get a save tomorrow. I have little faith in Kazmir, by the way. Very little.
Can Kelly Johnson be a top 5 2b???
If he continues this pace for 50 home runs, yeah. I say he has a shot at 25-30 homers, though. He's always been legit, when healthy.
Quite the curve Ozzie threw us yesterday, ay? Who do you trust more.....Jenks or Wood?
That's Ozzie. My Monday blog said Jenks would be fine, but I did think he'd get a few days off from closing. Guess not. Jenks had a bad weekend. He's not the reason the White Sox stink, though.
Are you taking Sizemore or Bay? Who do you think finishes with the most useful numbers? Thanks!
At this point, I would take Bay. I don't have a good feeling that Sizemore is healthy.
CJ Wilson are you trying to deal him or do you think he is fairly legit. obviously not sub 2 era but sub 4?
Pretty legit, with only worry being he's never piled on the innings like this. What happens when he hits 150 innings? That's all. And his ERA should be around 3, at best.
Surprised by Marcum's start this year? Dominating Boston today. Other than Ws, he solid everywhere else all year?
Have him on a few teams, but still, surprised he's been this good. Didn't really expect more than 10-12 wins.. he can do that. The fact he was Toronto's opening day starter was a ringing endorsement, and spoke volumes.
Beckham did the soccer player decide to try baseball and nobody told me? What do you think from here out?
Buying, buying, buying. Him and Coghlan. But I understand those who disagr...no, I don't. These guys can hit. Wait it out.
Jacoby Ellsbury? What kind of pitcher do you trade to get him.. Top 20? Top 30?
Start with bad pitchers and work you way backward. How should I know what someone will pay? I wouldn't start with a top 20 pitcher, though. Negotiate!
EK- What's your take on Prince thus far? Any truth to the hand issue? Something has to be up right?
Starting to believe something has to be wrong, but let's remember this guy can hit 25 homers in half a season, too...
If Phil Hughes was locked on my bench when the first game of the double header started, will i be able to move him into an active slot between the games?
Good question... I don't believe so, but give it a try. I think it's treated as once the Yankees start playing today, they lock.
Am I legit or sell me high?
He looks legit to me...
EK, whats up with this B. Boesch kid? Seems to have a great average and driving in runs batting behind M. Cabrera, yet no one ever talks about him...
It's not certain how long he's up, because Leyland is very loyal and Carlos Guillen will play DH when healthy.
Let's talk about Kris Medlen a little. With Jurrjens having a setback, and Kenshin a complete mess, does he stick in the Atlanta rotation? And how does he do?
I wrote about Medlen last week, so check it out. Yeah, I think he sticks around the rotation and has a good season. Very comparable minor league numbers with teammate Tommy Hanson...
Mike Aviles? Drop Alcides Escobar or Alexei Ramirez for him?
Yeah, surprisingly enough, I'd cut both. I see nothing good happening with them.
What about dropping perez for contreras? You know Wood will be on the DL again soon.
I concur... but if you need saves this week, it's not Perez. No more Contreras questions, because let's face it, we just don't have enough info. We also don't know if he can handle closing... as Ryan Madson showed us, the 8th and 9th innings...very different!
Eric, thanks for chatting today. Would you give up Vlad for Markakis in standard league?
Yes, I think most people would... go for it.
Ek. You mentioned buying low on Vazquez - what about his AL East rival Beckett? You buying him too?
Yes, I absolutely am buying Beckett. Too much track record on these guys to give up.
Carlos Ruiz, the OBP Machine, can he keep this up? Drop Doumit for Ruiz in an OBP league?
No, I would not. Ruiz's numbers can't stay this good for long. And Doumit is a double digit HR guy, good average..
Back to Grady Sizemore, is he worth a speculative add if you have plenty of available roster room?
Oh, of course. With roster room I'd add virtually anyone...
What is going to happen to Eric Jr. playing time? Do they send him down?
He's likely back in the minors later this week... hey, he had his chance.
I asked the same question a month or so ago, but does Victorino get 20 HR's this year? He's on pace for like 35.
I take the under on 20 HRs.. and probably 20 steals as well.. .but 16 and 18, that works!
I'm really, really looking forward to years of Heyward vs. Strasburg matchups. Who's with me?
Absolutely. What I'm not looking forward to is Heyward-Kyle Kendrick matchups... or Strasburg vs. John Mayberry Jr!
Who you got tonight Pens/Habs?
What, there's another hockey game? Go Flyers... and of course, since the Flyers could get home ice for the next round, despite being the 7th seed, if Montreal wins...go Habs...
Chone Figgins-- are you buying? Thanks EK!
Have to buy him and Jose Lopez...not sure if there any other Mariners bats to guy though... hold on, gotta take a nap. OK, I'm back.
lets count the number of ways kevin gregg tries to blow this marcum win
Thoughts on Michael Saunders from Seattle. Deep league worth a shot over someone like Adam Jones?
No. I would take Jones. Saunders doesn't impress me much...
how many wins do you see for penny?
13 or 14...this is legit.
Drop Porcello for Medlen in a H2H points league?
No. Absolutely not. But I do like Medlen some...
EK - I really enjoy the blog and hope you take my question. Do you think Josh Hamilton is officially back to 2008 form [or close]? And can he once again be trusted in all leagues?
Thanks John! Most people in this chat probably don't know I blog 3 or 4 times per day! No, I do not think the ol' Hamilton is back. I see this version hitting maybe 25 home runs, .275, but that 2008 version was unreal in the first half of the season.
Eric huge fan, who has the better job security of these three RP/SP Gorzelanny,Vargas,Chacin?
Security...hmmm.. Well, Chacin doesn't have it. Two bad starts and he's demoted. Gorzy really doesn't have it if he starts to struggle, not with Zambrano lurking. The Mariners... have nothing lurking. Vargas...
Please give me permission to dump Adam Jones.
No can do... but I'd think about it. Depends what's available, and if I was worried that a better team in my league would grab him and beat me with him...
Who stays in the rotation- Latos or LeBlanc?
Both are relatively safe... but Latos over LeBlanc.
It's tough to keep up with the blog when it's not free...Venable or Snider
Not like you have to buy it each time! And I don't make the rules... I write. I take Venable.
Lets count the # of times Don from SF makes it on here
Whoa..there's another mention!
EK - Can't stand you, but I'll ask anyway: I'm trying to move Lind and/or Butler to try and upgrade at 1B. Who can i reasonably target?
Well, thanks for the honesty. Was it something I said? As for the question ... wait, what was the question?
Eric -- do you think Julio Borbon is going to turn it around this year? He attempted his first steal last night since Apr 21, but was thrown out. I guess that's still a good sign?
I have little confidence he can duplicate his 2009 efforts, which were a small sample size.
Drop Carmona for Ely, Medlen or Gio Gonzalez?
Way too early on Ely... I do like the other guys more though.
Eric, what to make of Lance Berkman's struggles? I know he got a HR last night, but do you think he's finally coming around?
I think he can still hit .275 with 25 home runs, so yeah, he'll come around.
Kyle Blanks continues to mystify me. I own him in a 20 team league, but am wondering if I'm better off with a guy like Saunders or Scott Hairston. What say you, fantasy guru?
I dropped Blanks in a 12-team league last week, but I don't think I would have if Saunders and Hairston were the replacements. I still have some faith in Blanks, but losing patience.
Wallace or Alvarez for call ups which would you take?
Alvarez... I think more immediate power for this season.
You said you like Coghlan, but would you use Fred Lewis until Coghlan starts to show us something?
Sure, I would sit him and players struggling like him, but dropping is a different matter. I would rather own, for the duration of the season, Coghlan than Lewis. But this week, I would use Lewis.
Better keeper: Castro or Stanton (yes, I know he has yet to play a game but can we expect a player like J Hey)
I think people are way too high on Stanton. Of course he has prodigious power. Light tower power. And Ryan Howard's strikeouts. Pitchers normally - not with Howard, but in general - figure out young bats like that and the hitter has to adjust. But I'd like to see what Stanton can do, though not at the expense of Coghlan or Maybin. For now, Castro over Stanton.
Scutaro or Aviles?
Still have to say Scutaro, but definitely closer than I would have thought. I'm in on Aviles.
Why won't you answer my questions?
I just did. Oh...
Hey Eric...Do you think trading Weiters and Buchholz is fair value for Lester?
Depends what you've got at catcher I suppose, but in a vaccuum, yeah.
Eric, my roto keeper team is very low on steals and pierre is out there. I've got adam laroche and smoak on my bench, but I hate dropping a great keeper like smoak and I love laroche's annual 2nd half binge. Am I being too stubborn here, should I drop one of them for pierre?
Yeah, I think you have to. Pierre could steal 60 bases, could lead the majors. Not even joking.
In a month from now, who is the guy you think everyone will be asking "when will he be up" ie Matt Wieters last year.
Stanton! Or one of the catchers, Santana or Posey.
Am I totally irrelevant in fantasy yet? Hitting a little better in the 7th spot...
I like the power/speed potential. Maybe he just can't lead off yet.
B.Molina or G.Soto?
I have Polanco and was offered Lind for him. At times this was a no-brainer but Polanco looks like a perfect fit in the Philly lineup. What side do you take?
Polanco can hit 12-14 home runs. Lind can hit double that. I'd take Lind.
You a believer in Carlos Santana? More so than Chris Snyder this year?
Yes and yes, but can you wait a month ... or three months? No idea when Santana comes up.
I have David Freese filling in for A-Ram right now. Could this be a permanent fixture?
I could see that being permanent, yes.
Do I need to insult you to get on here? I refuse. Jose Guillen... time to cut him loose for Andrew Jones, Coghlan, Aviles, or T Snider?
Thank you! And yes, I'd probably cut him for all those guys.
I have Roy Halladay on my Roto team, but I am playing someone with Halladay in a h2h league.DO I cheer for or against hallady?
Nice. How about you cheer for your favorite team first... Overall, cheer.
What is with this nonsense about the O's sending Reimold to AAA to make room for Corey Patterson?
I know, crazy, right? Maybe I should blog about this! Corey has burned me before... multiple times. This is about Reimold.
Football! Who wins the seattle rb job you think?
Lendale... and I think he has a really good year. But few are on my side.
League handcuff for Aardsma?
Yes...but I wouldn't overrate that one save.
What is your opinion on Callaspo
Everyday 3B... can hit .300 and now he has pop.
I'm DYING here! As a Marcum owner I must tell you I plan to bash my computer monitor into bits if Gregg blows this game.
Have faith, people! Kevin Gregg, 30 saves!
Am I better than Heyward when I get called up for a dynasty league?
I don't think so... not the same type of player at all.
Are you not answering my questions because I'm not from a big city? For shame! Gardner or Pierre?
Pierre 60 steals, .290, 70 runs... Gardner 50 steals, .290, 80 runs.... winnah!
Well, that was fun... thank you to everyone for contributing to this chat session. I enjoyed it, hope you did as well. We're only here because of you guys and gals... have a great day!
