Chat with Matt Mosley

nav (toronto)

Can Barron replace Columbo at RT for Dallas to start the season?

Mosley
  (12:01 PM)

That's not going to happen. He might be a candidate down the road. Remember that he's a FA after this season.

Jake (VA Beach)

Fewell has said his defense could be a hybrid mix with 3 safeties at times. What does that mean for them? And, is there a chance we could see a 5-2 type of formation given their depth on the DL?

Mosley
  (12:02 PM)

Jake, I'm not exactly sure what that looks like. I would assume he's talking about a subpackage in which Phillips, Rolle and either the rookie or Grant would be on the field. You could see a 5-2. Sure.

jon (washington ,dc)

do you think the redskins secondary with d.hall,c.rogers,phillip buchanon,l.landry and im guessing reed doughty is strong enough to contain the WR groups of the giants, cowboys and eagles???

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

I think that secondary will look a lot better if the Skins can generate a big-time pass rush. Not just sacks, but constant pressure. Then Hall can make some plays on the ball. That's not exactly a feared group in the secondary.

David (Halifax)

Is there any possible way the Eagles win the NFC East this year?

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

Sure, it could happen. Kolb has a lot of weapons. If they block it up and give him plenty of time, they could be in the hunt. Would not shock me.

Don (Huntington,WV)

When are we going to see you wearing a Mark Moseley jersey at a redskings practice? ;)

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

Mark adds the extra "e" and, plus, his first name is Mark. Believe it or not, this is the first time anyone's ever brought this up.

Don (Huntington,WV)

Is there anything the Redskins could offer the Titans in conjunction with Fat Albert to obtain Chris Johnson in a trade?Keep up the great work Matt!RIP:#21 HTTR!!!

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

ummm...Nope, that will never happen.

Newt (Jacksonville)

What's the deal with DT John Henderson? Do you see the Giants snaring him, or is there some sticker shock going on?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

For the right price, Jerry Reese would be interested. Was an elite player at one point. I don't think it's gonna happen.

pascal (va)

When (not if) O.J. Atogwe becomes a free agent june 1st, the REDSKINS NEED TO GET HIM!!!! we'll have a top 5 secondary with him!!! we were already T-8 (better than the cowgirls) and were 1st for a few weeks and wouldve been better if our D didnt give up! which they did.. dont deny that

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Cowboys like Atogwe, too. Don't read too much into those rankings. I'm sure the Saints secondary ranked near the bottom, but they caused a ton of turnovers and helped take the team to the Super Bowl. Skins went 4-12 with that No. 8 secondary.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

I'm getting my question in super early in hopes of it being answered for the first time! Even tho you don't answer my questions, Matt, I'm still a loyal reader. What are the chances the Cowboys make a strong play for Atogwe?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

They'll kick the tires on Atogwe, Kevin.

MJ (Long Island via Boston)

Hall is the 7th best corner in the NFC East....all his picks come from tipped balls. He couldn't even cover Wade Philips

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

But he might have a shot against Roy Williams...

David (Halifax, Canada)

who starts at linebacker for Philly on week 1?

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Bradley in the middle, Fokou at the strongside, Sims at weak.

MJ (Long Island via Boston)

CC Brown got signed by the Lions, I'm amazed he got a contract. Was he the worst safety in the NFC East since Lynn Scott and Tony Dixon?

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Extra points for the underrated Lynn Scott reference. But Scott was better than Brown was last season. C.C. Brown's a guy who can help you in spots. Over the long-haul (two games), he'll get you beat. Ask DeSean Jackson or Jeremy Maclin about that.

Joe (NYC)

Am I the only giant fan that is scared that are only options at MLB are a 6' rookie or someone named goff? MM please tell me someone in the giant organization feels the same way.

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

No, you're not the only one scared about that. In fact, my "Big Question" today on the NFC East blog deals directly with that issue. It's amazing that everyone assumes a MLB picked in the fourth round can come in and start. I think it might be a group effort. Keep your eye on the waiver wire heading into the season. I actually think Bobby Carpenter could've helped the Giants -- believe it or not.

Cameron (Virginia)

Are the Cowboys the clear leader in the nfc this year?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

I think so.

dude (P-Town)

yo matt, the seachickens had a good draft. what do you expect from hasselbeck?

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

I expect for him to be replaced at about midseason either for performance or injury reasons.

MJ (Long Island via Boston)

Mosely - i'd feel pretty comfortable with you on Roy Williams...at least in press

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Don't sell me short. There's no way he gets into a route with me at the line of scrimmage. I'd make a couple of Mack Brown jokes and we'd be off and running.

Tex Premium Lager (NJ)

What is the biggest obstacle to a Haynesworth trade: 1) Redskins' asking price 2) Albert's bad attitude 3) Albert's ludicrous contract?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Tex, let's go with curtain No. 2.

Evan (Toms River, NJ)

What are the chances of Phillip Dillard actually turning into the Giant's MLB of the future? I like the kid, but I also think it's unfair at this point to discount the value of having Goff around. The kid has been in the system for some time now, and I think he could breakout if given the chance.

Mosley
  (12:18 PM)

I think you're right. Too quick to dismiss Goff. We just don't know a lot about these guys. Funny that Gerris Wilkinson is STILL hanging around. All hat, no cattle.

Mason (Louisville)

Hey Matt, How would you rank the recieving corps of each of the Beast teams? I have Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Skins...

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

NFC East receiving corps:1. Eagles2. Giants3. Cowboys4. SkinsI have to see Bryant in action before I move up the Cowboys. Loved what I saw from Nicks and Smith last season. You can't discount those guys. But Maclin and Jackson are about to emerge as the most dangerous duo in the league.

jon (washington dc)

i have heard shanahan wants competition at every position.do you think willie parker and larry johnson havent shown much at the first 2 voluntary mini camps because they are inviting brian westbrook to town???

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

No, I think it's simply part of Shanahan's plan to add all the great backs from 2005.

shanard ((slc,ut))

Matt, if the skins sign westbrook and let larry johnson go how much of a contribution could he have with the skins.

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

If you use him in spots and get him the ball in space, he probably has a little something left. But you can't give him more than 10 carries per game.

Matty (PA)

Mosley, can the eagles generate a rushing game this year or are they going to but Kolb in same position as Mcnabb having to throw all the time?

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

What do you think, Matty? Andy can't help himself. He'll flirt with the running game a little bit, but the Eagles will live or die by the pass -- just like always. He was a little more balanced last season, but not a lot more.

Matt (MN)

Green Bay or Vikes in the North? Or possibly the Bears even now?

Mosley
  (12:23 PM)

Vikes if you know who returns.

Goody (Brunnerville, PA)

Why not just life-time ban players who test positive for PEDs? Unlike a positive test for street drugs, these are players who are intentionally cheating! I bet Cushing never would have considered taking PEDs if Merriman were playing in Canada.

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

That seems a bit extreme to me. For whatever reason, there's not the same stigma in football over PEDs as baseball. That's not going to change just because we're re-doing an award.

Tony D (Burbank, CA)

Will Shawn Andrews land in the NFL this season? He's so talented, you have to believe someone would give him a shot if there's even a decent possibility he'll be healthy.

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

Wouldn't do anything with that guy. I don't think he loves playing football, so there's really no reason to waste your time.

Andrew (NY)

Do you thin the G's will make a trade for a MLB before the season starts? Shame they lost the chance to get Oakland's. They could have packaged Cofield and a late round pick.

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

Nah, Cofield and a late pick doesn't get it done. They'll watch the waiver wire pretty closely.

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

What would you set the over/under on the number of games Brandon Jacobs plays this year?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

13

Mark (Gaithersburg, MD)

Hey Matt, love the blizz-og. Who's gonn abe the Skins' 3rd QB this year?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

If they keep a third, I sort of like the Bartel kid. Did a nice job in preseason for the Cowboys. Big arm, big guy.

Rosh (Downingtown, PA)

What are the odds of the Eagles taking a run at OJ Atogwe - I know we aren't rumored as being in the running for him but it could reall help our depth - especially since we could slide our 2nd round safety pick over to corner sometimes.

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

for the right price, the Eagles, Cowboys and Skins will all be interested in Atogwe. It's like this guy has created his own special market.

Christian (NC by way of NYC)

Do you see Hakeem Nicks establishing himself as #1 receiver for Eli Manning this season?

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

I think Nicks will continue to be the big-play receiver and Smith will keep catching a ton of balls. Great combo.

Eli (DC)

Do you think the Redskins can run the ball well if they just stay behind williams, dock, and casey?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

I'd try not to run behind Williams too much.

Drew (Charlotte)

Matt, who's your suprise 2010 breakout team in the whole NFC? AFC?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

I sort of like the Skins as my breakout team in the NFC. I think nine wins would qualify in comparison to last season...In the AFC, give me the Dolphins.

Sean (Orlando)

Will the niners finally put it together and win the west? Or am I in for another disappointing season with lots of close losses?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

Cards don't have a QB and Seahawks are starting over...Yep, you guys are in good shape.

B (NC)

Matt, if we think back to last year at this time, all anyone would talk about with regards to the Giants was their refusal to sign a big name free agent to replace Plax and their inexperienced group of WRs. Clearly, the Giants thought they had some talent at the position, and clearly they were right. Perhaps we should give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their thinking on the current group of LBs.

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

Well, I don't give the benefit of the doubt to a defense that was dreadful last season. Sorry.

Fred (MD)

I can't understand Big Al. Everyone on the Skins is on the same page except him. What is his deal?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Let's not act like this is some huge surprise. There were always rumors that Haynesworth was lazy at times with the Titans. He was an elite player on the field, but he also has the capacity to go it at times. So I don't see any of this as a big surprise. I just feel bad for all the Skins fans who kept defending him last season on the NFC East blog. How do you have this man's back?

Peter (NYC)

Do you expect Andre Brown or Travis Beckham to contribute at all to the NYGiants this season?

Mosley
  (12:34 PM)

I just don't recall a lot of backs coming back from Achilles' tendon injuries. I think Beckum will be a lot more involved. I don't think they really knew what to make of him last season.

Daniel (Baltimore)

Hey Mr. Mosley, what do you think the chances are that the skins can have a defensive season like the packers did when they switched to a 3-4 not too long ago?

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

Daniel, be careful what you wish for. At one point last December, the Packers' were riding high with their new 3-4. But I seem to recall Kurt Warner hanging half a hundred on them in the playoffs.

John (MA)

With the trade of Carpenter, does Dallas have enough depth should James or Brooking go down?

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Well, you better hope that Sean Lee is an immediate upgrade over Carpenter. Because that's what they think he is.

David (Halifax, Canada)

will Jamarcus Russell be in the Beast next year?

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

What, have you heard something? I don't expect to Russell in the Beast.

M (DC)

Everybody is talking about how Redskins will handle the change to 3-4 scheme, but why are the people not asking similar questions with respect to their change to zone-blocking scheme on offense?

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

Sorry, the zone-blocking scheme just isn't as compelling to discuss. Shanahan's done it for years. We know he's good at coaching it. What else should I say? I did ask Trent Williams about that topic. He said he's been in zone-blocking schemes since high school. Not concerned one bit about the adjustment.

David (Halifax, Canada)

will Brandon Graham play DE or LB?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

He'll start out at DE, but he'll also work a little bit at LB in some packages.

David (Halifax, Canada)

Will Ricky Sapp get any playing time this year?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

I think so, yes.

Rob (Lake Worth, Florida)

Hey Matt,I am hearing that Mike Williams has a promising future as a right guard in the NFL. And it is not Vinny Cerrato blowing smoke up our a**! What do you think?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

I think he's serviceable in a backup role. I'd be shocked if he makes it through 16 games as a starter. I admire that the guy has lost a bunch of weight. But I'd never enter a season with him as my starter. I'd rather have Hicks in there than Williams.

Corey (Philly)

Mosley, what do you see the Eagles doing about their secondary by the start of the season. Do they stay with what they have and depend on hopes and dreams, or do they bring in someone else?

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

They'll keep a close eye on the waiver wire. They'll hope Ellis Hobbs is 100 percent healthy from that neck injury. I'd be VERY concerned about their situation at CB.

Fred (MD)

Back to Big Al...I know that he has had motivation problems in the past and the Skins are regretting the signing. However at what point does his pride kick in? He is a joke and the whole league knows. The Skins couldn't give this guy away.

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

"Pride" will kick in when the Skins stop sending checks to his house (direct deposit). And that's not happening unless he doesn't report to the mandatory minicamp. As I heard Mark "Stink" Schlereth say on NFL Live last night, "he's a big baby."

George (Walla Walla)

Glad you said the Giants D was dreadful. I have been watching the Giants all my life and that was not the worst defense(close) but it is was far and away the most disappointing by a large margin. They quit, they flat out quit at the end of the season. I know Bill S gets a lot of the blame but TC is the head coach, they quit on him too. Why is this not a bigger story?

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

George, it was a pretty big story in New York. That was a disgraceful showing down the stretch. I think Coughlin tried a little bit of everything. He benched some starters, but that didn't really pan out. The Giants have brought in reinforcements. Let's see how it goes.

sean (philly)

Matt, you say the Eagles live and die by the pass well what about when Garcia had to take over? Is there any indication the Eagles wont do the same for Kolb? We do have 3 great runners, not to mention Charles scott, ar 230 be can be a great 3rd down back. Dont you think?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

I just take a look at Andy's entire body of work and have a hard time thinking he'll change. And he has a lot of confidence in Kolb's arm. It's not like they're going to the wishbone or anything. Three great running backs? Who are you referring to? I think McCoy has a chance to be pretty good, but I don't think Bell should be described as "great." Same for Leonard.

Allen (FL)

Which RB has the best season in The Beast?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Felix Jones.

Dmyth12 (PA)

Its that time of year where we ask you to rate our teams by position. What is your pre-camp ranking of our Dline's?

Mosley
  (12:50 PM)

D-line rankings:1. Cowboys2. Redskins (if Al gets off his couch)3. Giants 4. Eagles

MJ (Long Island via Boston)

Dont forget the Pack gave up 500 passing yards vs Pittsburgh...

Mosley
  (12:50 PM)

Yes, good point!

Jeff (NJ)

Does Gilbride work some plays into the playbook for Travis Beckum this year and how about a Ramses Barden appearance in a red zone package from time to time?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

Think they'll try to work both players in. Barden's involvement hinges on his willingness to improve on special teams. He just didn't bring it in that department last season.

Tony D (Burbank, CA)

Did the 'skins miss the boat on their chance to trade Haynesworth? It would have been nice to move him for picks before the draft...

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

Believe it or not, people weren't really desperate to acquire him. Skins may have been forced to do it for a third-rounder. And even Shanny thought that wasn't enough.

Steve Davis Belhaven North Carolina [via mobile]

Do you think Dallas will put Roy williams in the slot and Start Bryant and austin also what will happen to crayton?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

I believe they're listening to offers on Austin. Doesn't really matter where you put Williams at this point. Simply not a good fit on this team. Bryant and Austin will get the valuable playing time as the season unfolds.

Patrick (NYC)

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703961104575226444032967992.htmlGreat article about how the Giants are the best when it comes to signing undrafted FAs.

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

Thanks, Patrick. I'll check that out.

Tom (NYC)

mr mosley, the man! can you rate the team defenses in the beast this upcoming year?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

Overall defenses in Beast:1. Cowboys2. Giants3. Redskins4. EaglesI'm still really concerned about the Eagles at LB. Sims and Fokou don't exactly put you at ease and the CB situation is pretty scary. Not enough depth.

TonyRamiroRomo (Madison, Wisconsin)

There was an arguement earlier on the blog about which team has more concerns on their starting o-line, the Cowboys or the Eagles. Which team do you think should be more concerned?

Mosley
  (12:58 PM)

It's pretty even. The Cowboys obviously have to wonder what's going to happen with Doug Free at LT. Eagles have an advantage there. Herremans and Kosier are a wash. Cowboys are better at center with Gurode. Jackson's injured...Davis is better than Stacy Andrews at right guard. And I'd still give the nod to Colombo at RT. So maybe I'd say the Eagles should be a bit more concerned, although that LT position is pretty important.

Dan (Sploozoo) (DC)

Please address your apparant personal dislike for Albert Haynesworth. Are the Mosleys family friends with the Gurodes?

Mosley
  (1:00 PM)

Nothing personal at all. Have had some good visits with him. I just didn't get caught up in the celebration over his performance last season. I thought there were a lot of haynesworth apologists roaming around and I didn't quite understand it. The man was paid like the best defender in the league. I simply didn't feel like he played to that level. You guys were tremendous -- as always. Let's do this again in two weeks. I'm on vacation next week. (insert joke).MM
