Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Back from the grand opening of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. What a special day for the sport and city of Charlotte.Ready to talk about that and whatever else is on your mind. Fire away.

clyde boan (Darlington,sc)

Heard from garage several people said dale jr was going to childress in 2011 in a Budweiser #3 car, whats up

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

If that is the case then Earnhardt isn't being truthful. He said emphatically he has no plans to leave Hendrick and wants to stay with him as long as he can. Childress said he'll be at 3 cars next year, maybe 4. When he re-signs Harvick he'll have 3 drivers under contract.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

We need more Jeff-Jimmie rivalries. I personally love the Jr-Kyle rivalry and hope it comes back. I am a Kurt Busch fan so I would love to see the 3rd installment of the Kurt vs. Tony trilogy. What is one rivalry you would like to see happen?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

I agree on the Jeff-Jimmie rivalry. I told Jeff that more than a month ago. He said hand him the script and he'd be ready to go. Unfortunately in today's world team owners aren't going to let that sort of rivalry get out of hand.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

The chase needs adjustment, tell me what you think: Make it 12 races (starting labor day weekend), after every 3 races eliminate the last three in the standings. Have Richmond again the race before the chase; The 12 tracks should be: Darlington, Atlanta, Bristol, Charlotte, Dover, Phoenix, Texas, Watkins Glen, Kansas, Homestead, Talladega, & Martinsville (start out with Darlington's REAL southern 500). What you think?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

I like having Darlington on Labor Day weekend, not so sure I like expanding to 12 races, although if you eliminate drivers that could help. Would certainly add some intrigue. Like the idea of having at road course in the Chase as well. Still think they need to end at Daytona.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will drive the #9 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series in 2011?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

You mean if the number doesn't move to another team? Honestly, no clue at this moment. If they can't find a sponsor and top notch driver it may have to sit empty.

Cody (ND)

Do you see Jeff Gordon having a shot at the championship if he doesn't start winning some races?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

To win a title I believe you have to win races. He'll win. His team is running too strong not to. Maybe he'll get on a winning roll in the Chase when it's most important. He'll make the Chase regardless.

Ryan (Reynoldsburg,Ohio)

At what point will mark martins age begin to affect him to the point where he is no longer a contender

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

The man is in incredible shape, better than Dale Jr. and half the garage. Did you see his abs on the GoDaddy.com site? Unbelievable. Who knows when he'll lose some of the reflexes that make him so good. I could see him driving at a top level well into his 50s.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Would you think maybe in the class of 2012 that Janet Guthrie will be inducted in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Hmm. Assuming Pearson, Waltrip, Yarborough, Bobby Allison and maybe Lee Petty are in the second class I hope some of the old timers that time and fans have forgot. Who would you pick?

Josh (Wisconsin)

KFC should be involved in NASCAR. New sponsor for Smoke?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Finger licking good. What about Bo Jangles?

Jim (Maryland)

Would someone please explain to me manufacturer loyalty? Is there really any difference between a Chevy and a Toyota other than the look of the nose?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

The loyalty is over the size of the check the manufacturer writes the owner. Plus when you've been with a manufacturer for a long time owners tend to want to stay with them because they have a lot of things tied to it,financially and emotionally.

Frank (DC)

When is Tony going to realize that his real problemis that he gets engines from Hendrick? Does he really think Hendrick is giving him as good an engine as is in Jeff or JJ's cars?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

You really believe that? If that were the case Stewart wouldn't have gotten off to such a great start last year.

Tim (AZ)

David, just how bad of shape is Roush in? I know the drivers are trying to be positive, but behind the scenes they have to be upset. Kenseth and Biffle don't have many years left, and Edwards is a highly marketable guy. It has to really upset them that they are in this situation due to Roush's poor decisions or lack of foresight, wouldn't you think? For a team that is supposed to be Ford's NASCAR rep, they look absolutely lost. They are easily behind Hendrick, Childress, Gibbs, half of SHR, Penske, and EGR in performance right now.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Talked to Biffle at the Hall of Fame today. He doesn't think they are that far off in performance. What concerns me is sponsors. If Roush can't get full sponsorship for his Nationwide cars with Cup drivers that doesn't bode well.

Dave (dover)

hey dave are u going to be here at dover and so what will u be doing will u be anywhere around the hopitality area for the drivers qna sessions anyway i could get a autograph from ya

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I'll be around. Staying at casino hotel and will be in the media center or garage most of the time. Look me up and will be glad to give you my John Hancock, although you might find more value in the drivers.

mark (dover)

hey dave so is this gordon weekend finally here at the monster or will someone else prevail

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Since I wouldn't pick him to win at Dover that'll probably be the place he wins. Geez the guy is due. So is Burton. Both have had great cars.

md (dover)

hey dave thanks for chatting are u going to be around dover sunday and cover the news do you think jr or gordon can win or will denny make it four this weekend thanks

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

I'll be there and I am picking Kyle Busch this weekend.

sears (de)

hey dave do you see the monster taking his anger anger out this weekend at all or do u see a calm race

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Somewhere in between. Nothing crazy, but I expect a good show.

Andy (MD)

Do you know how much in admissions to get in NASCAR Hall of Fame?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

$19.95 for adults. Worth it if you spend the day it takes to see everything. Cheaper than a four-hour round of golf.

mike (maryland)

hey dave im coming to dover this weekend will u be there what area are u around the most i like the monument and rreading the wins around it

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Won't be around the momnument. Job requires me to be in the garage most of the time. Could find me in the casino though. Hear the Coca-Cola in there is better than most.

Andy (MD)

Smoke loses one of his sponsors, Old Spice. What sponsors may be going with Smoke in 2011? Bud may be a good choice. Home Depot? I'd love to see go with Smoke and drive that orange car. I know this may not happen, but it would be cool to see him going be to that orange car.

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Not sure Bud wants to be on the car only 40 percent of the time, becuase Office Depot is on for 60 percent. Not sure Office Depot wants to share with a beer company. I'm sure they'll find somebody for Smoke, but the 39 continues to need Haas Automotive as a secondary sponsor, so it's tough out there.

Mark (Iowa)

David,Would it be considered a conflict of interest to have one oil company step in and sponsor the 29 team after Shell is leaving? I am thinking if Mobil 1 does, would this potentionally be a conflict of interest?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

That would be cool, but Childress told me it was likely somebody outside the sport.

Tracy (CT)

Heading to the allstar race next weekend with a stop at the HOF. Am I going to be there all day because I don't want to leave? Or will I have time to do other things like visit race shops that day?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

I'd leave at least half a day for the Hall, then pick one or two shops for the afternoon.

Rebecca (Carson City, NV)

We saw the ESPN interview with the brothers Bobby and Donnie Allison and wondered when the brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch will be inducted into the Nascar HOF too?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Not eligible until five years after their retirement I believe.

Kevin (Cleveland)

Hi David, thanks for the time. I have always been curious as to the cost to field a NASCAR team, any idea what someone like Joe Nemechek spends to field a car for the season? Thanks again.

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

The top teams say they need $20 million at least from sponsors to remain on top. You can get a car for $150,000 to $200,000, but everything else runs up the bill.

Jeremy (NC)

Isn't it unfortunate that someone is going to have to ask Tony Stewart questions this weekend at Dover re: Old Spice? I feel a tirade coming this weekend from Smoke that makes 2001 Tony look like the New Kyle.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

There'd definitely be one if I asked. I asked him a question at the Sept. Dover race about whether the regular-season champion should get a point advantage going into the Chase and he said I wasn't smart enough to re-invent the system.

Lea (NJ)

Hi David, Do you think the first women inducted into the HOF should be a France like Lesa or a drivers wife who helped her husbands career like Teresa Earnhart or Eva Busch or maybe the female Chevy engineer?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

What about Janet Guthrie? Surprised you didn't mention Danica Patrick. Of the people you mentioned I'd go with Lesa.

Janie, NYC [via mobile]

What is the coolest item on display at the Hall of Fame?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

So many to choose from. From a journalist standpoint the old teleram used by Tom Higgins, a legendary NASCAR writer. From a pure fan perspective the still Junior Johnson built himself was pretty cool. Lots of nuggest though. Like most I can't pick one.

RAYGORDONREID (DELAWARE CITY DELAWRE 19706)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHO YOU HAVE FOR DOVER SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Kyle Busch with Greg Biffle my second pick.

Donald (York, PA)

What are the corporate HOF sponsorships we have been hearing about and how are they indentified?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Lowes is the most visible from the large video screen on Glory Road to the Lowe's Hauler on the second floor. To be honest they have struggled in the sponsor department.

Sammi (Sarasota, Fl)

Do you think Bill France Jr. should have been elected in the 2nd HOF class so that David Pearson could have been in the 1st?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

YES!!!!!

Butch (FL)

Hey Dave, which teams will these drivers be with next year?McMurray,Sadler,Hornish,Ragan,Kahne

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

McMurray staying with EGR, Sadler with RPM, Hornish with Penske. Ragan has some work to do to keep his ride. Kahne I still see in the 5 at Hendrick.

Eric from ny [via mobile]

David do you think that jr will win a race this season and also will he make the chase?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Yes on both counts.

Joe (ma)

In the picture it looks like Byrons 22 has a battering ram on the front of it.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Not really, but it could be used as one. Nice observation.

Luther (Birmingham, AL)

How bout a special HOF group for Open Wheelers that have contributed to Nascar like Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, Foyt, Stewert, Mears, J. Andretti, Scotty Speed, Juan Pablo etc?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Not a bad idea, although this is the NASCAR Hall of Fame and you shouldn't get in because of something you did in another sport. If they are worthy in Cup they'll get in.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Hello David, I have pit passes on Friday at Dover. I am not sure if they are hot or cold. In your opinion, what are must things to see and do in the limited time we have before the truck race??????

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

The garage is tight and small at Dover, but if you cold passes hang around the haulers and garage stalls as much as possible to watch all that goes on. If it is hot pick a driver you like and hang out next to his pit stall. pretty cool.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

Hi David, lot of big time drivers need Sponsor's. Gordan Stewart and HarvickHave you heard anything. I could see Mobil one back to Newman at SHR.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

I've heard a few things, a few that will surprise if they happen. Nothing I want to put in print at the moment. Sorry.

Glenn (Sebring, Fl. )

Hi David, How do you think the #88 would perform with Lance driving and Dale crew chiefing on the pit box?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Too funny. I think both are where they belong. Interesting imagination though.

TG (PA)

Oh the Nascar garage is turning into high school with people making up rumors! Dale Jr to the #3 car, Mark Martin starting his own team, etc. Well we will just have to wait until the end of the year to see what's true and what isn't.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Turning? It has been high school for as long as I've coverd it. I do think Martin could get into ownership though.

mdd (dover )

whos ur top 3 picks with a wild card this weekend i like hamlin gordon or kyle with truex or jr as the dark horse do u agree

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson. Wild card: Ryan Newman

Marybeth (Philly )

Who do u got for top10 this weekend at Dover? I wanna go w/ Hamlin but it hasnt been one his best tracks. I believe he has 22 avg finish there. My top10 no particular order: 5,24,48,31,99,16,17,56,00,18

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

All good numbers you have. Don't discount Hamlin. He's really focused on doing well here because he knows he'll have to in the Chase.

todd (dover )

are we going to see u at the monster this weekend were can we find u if we want an autograph thanks

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Stake out Dover Downs, quarter slot machine in the middle of the room. Kidding. In the garage mostly.

Ken (Johnson City, TX)

Kyle said he made the wrong adjustments on the last pit stop at Darlington that cause him to brush the wall. Does Kyle tell Dave what to do or does Kyle tell Dave what the car is doing and Dave makes the decision on the adjustments?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Kyle tells Dave what the car is doing and Dave makes adjustments, although Kyle knows enough about the cars to make suggestions.

Marybeth (Philly )

Do u think Gibbs has caught up HMS, or do u think they still r experimenting for later on in the season?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

I don't think HMS is experimenting, but I do believe JGR has closed the gap significantly. Rick Hendrick says he's been lapped, but he said that two years ago when Kyle was winning all the races. Jimmie won the title, if you remember.

miles the monster (monster mile )

am i going to wreck alot of cars this weekend or will i just play nice and wreck 1 or two thanks

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

You'll get your fair share.

Jessie (OR)

So at this point in the season, who do you think is in trouble?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Tony Stewart comes to mind first. Juan Pablo Montoya hasn't done well in points but his cars have been strong and he has three straight top 5s I believe. Nobody else I thought would do great is too out of whack.

Racetime2010 (NC)

Loved the HOF when I went for a soft opening. Truly a great spectacle. Seeing Petty climb out of that car this morning reminds me how cool he still is

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

You're right on Petty. Writing my blog on that as soon as I am done with this Chat.

Scott (Balto)

Any thoughts on if Old Spice is leaving SHR for the reasons they outlined, or is it actually related to this sophomore slump that he's currently in?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Was told by more than one person they are looking at different demographics. Youger and not middle-aged guys in need of a shave.

Scott (Balto)

I would much prefer a NASCAR race, but regardless, I'm counting down the days til the IRL comes here to race downtown...AWESOME!

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Sure you will have a blast.

Steve (Brookline, MA)

Is the car that Big Bill drove in that PanAmericana Mexico road race in the HOF?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Believe that is the one featured for his Hall induction. Bill Jr. is the only one without a car.

Tom (Boston)

Hey Dave, when can we expect Denny Hamlin to resign with JGR? Heard rumor that Waltrip Racing is talking with Hamlin about a possible third team with Budweiser as sponsor. Given the fact Denny co-owns a nightclub in Charlotte, how feasible is this? Guess that's why they call them rumors. Thanks Dave

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Denny and FedEx are locked in.

Scott (Balto)

Any chance of Stewart getting BUD as his new sponsor for next year, since Old Spice has left and Stewart CLEARLY has quite the beer belly.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Stewart likes Schlitz. Love Schlitz. Has a Shrine to Schlitz in his basement.

Justin M (Boone, NC)

Why do Nationwide (day) races always start later than the Cup races? Is it to accommodate Cup practice/qualifying/etc. or is it ESPN's decision?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Best time for TV mostly and to fit around everything else on a Cup weekend.

Jason (Titusville, FL)

If an older driver has to stay in great shape to be competitive like Martin, could Tony Stewert's weight and lack of physical conditioning be the reason for his downfall?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

He'd tell you it's the cars, but you make a good point.

Bryan (Iowa)

Of the top 12 in points currently, who do you think won't be in the chase when it starts?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Haven't studied it closely this week because it's changing every week, but I like the 12 who are there.

racetime2010 (NC)

David, any speculation at all on who is going to sign on as Harvick's new sponsor, whether or not he stays at RCR.. You can tell us. It will be our secret.. I wont retweet it or anything lol

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Not at all, What about Hersheys. Then he can rub against Kyle Busch's M&Ms and make a chocolate mess.

Mark (Harrisburg, Pa)

What's up Dave, which team do you think has the best driver development program & which up

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Not many are putting what they did into that anymore. It's easier to find a proven driver whose contract is up. I do like some of the young drivers JGR has developed though.

Bobby (Midland Park Nj )

Hey Dave do the they have Micheal Waltrip's Jet fuel set up on display at the HOF

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Funny. Didn't see it. Was too busy looking for Hendrick's illegal manifold.

Luke (PA)

Is the reason Henrick and Gordon are looking for new sponsorship because Dupont has kept the funding level at 2000 levels while other sponsors have up'd the ante?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

DuPont has backed off its financial commitment, if that is what you are saying.

Doug (Dallas)

Dave, where would Dale Jr. be today if his father were still alive....bless his soul? I can't believe I'm saying this but after listening to his whining every week, if he doesn't make the chase this year, Hendrick should just buy his contract out and put Kasey in the 88 next year.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

He'd be at DEI and probably doing better than he is now.

Eric (Harrisonburg)

Montoya's average finish when he finishes on the lead lap (7 races) is 5.3. If he stays out of trouble he's a lock for the chase. Just thought I'd share.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

He has been solid. As I noted earlier he's had a top five in the last three races and a top 5 car when he doesn't have trouble. Not many can say that.

Bubba (Frognot)

Who's better Jimmy Johnson or Dale Earnhardt

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

As a pure driver I'd go with Earnhardt. As a team I'd go with JJ. Earnhardt would be envious of four in a row.

Mahlon (Maryland)

Why does Kyle win this weekend? He's had bad luck at Dover recently. Possible triple? Does Kyle have a shot at the Cup this year?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

He's been consisent this year and keeping his emotions in check. Just a feeling I've got.

gordon24fan (driving to dover)

any chance logano could be a hendrick driver in the future

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Don't really see it. He's got a pretty good gig at JGR.

dave (302)

y did kurt decide to leave the 2 for teh 22 i think that will mess him up performance wise or was it penskes decision

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

It's just a number. And it wasn't his choice. Shell wanted him and Penske didn't want to break up the 2 and Miller Lite.

Leo (CT)

You heard anything more about the situation with the new KBM facility?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Nothing more than they are working through things. Seems the company that contracted out the bid isn't paying all the bills.

Saul (Sacramento)

Has the WINGLESS car leveled the playing field. Was the WINGED CAR the 48th secret weapon. Is the Spoiler the Kyptonite to the 48?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

As I recall Johnson won more than half his races with the spoiler. I wouldn't read too much into that at all.

Jerry (Tampa, FL)

So, where do you think Bud might end up? Or is that one of the things you don't want to put into print yet? I know some fans have speculated that InBev might pull Bud out of all NASCAR sponsorship, but I don't see that happening.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

I don't see Bud with Kahne at Hendrick. As for where the sponsor will land I'm not exactly sure.

mike (de)

will gordon have pepsi mobil 1 budweiser or a new sponsor not in the sport yet next season and is letarte getting a new contract

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Pepsi is part of Gordon's sponsorship deal. Don't think you'll find it co-existing with Budweiser on the same car. And Letarte will get a new deal. These things take time. It took Knaus' over four months to get done.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

That's all the time I have today. Have to write a blog on the Hall of Fame experience. Hope to see some of you there one day. Those that want to meet at Dover there may be a tweetup I'll attend. Follow on twitter at Dnewtonespn and I'll keep you updated. Thanks for chatting.
