Chat with Freddie Roach

Buzzmaster
  (11:08 AM)

Boxing trainer Freddie Roach will be here shortly to take your questions on Saturday's fight between Amir Khan and Paul Malignaggi.

Buzzmaster
  (11:09 AM)

We have Freddie!

Freddie Roach
  (11:10 AM)

Khan is in great shape and I'm looking forward to his fight on Saturday. We had our last session last night and he looked good. Let's chat!

Mike (Dallas)

Hey Freddie. Am a huge of yours. Could you please tell us about what you have done to improve Khan's chin ? The guy has been down 4 times in his 20 odd fights.

Freddie Roach
  (11:11 AM)

I think he was going into his fights looking for one punch knockouts and leaving himself open for shots. We've worked on changing that and I see no signs of a weak chin at this point.

matt (utah)

After Khan beats Malignaggi, would you think that he would be ready for a title unification bout against the likes of Bradley and Alexander?

Freddie Roach
  (11:12 AM)

Yes, I know after Saturday's fight we will have to fight one of those guys. It's a tough division and I think one of these guys can be a top pound-for-pound guy very soon.

lana (ny)

what kind of diet does amir or other boxers you have trained have when in training for a fight?

Freddie Roach
  (11:14 AM)

We put them on a strict diet. Five small meals a day and a couple of protein shakes. Once we get closer to the fights we stop the protein so that the fighter can drop the weight.

Arvee Eco (New York)

Hi Master Roach, do you have any predictions on a KO round of Paulie for the fight?

Freddie Roach
  (11:15 AM)

I don't think the fight will last that long. It defiantly won't go to the 12th. We'll have to see a resilient Paulie is in this fight.

Martin Madrid (Manila, Philippines)

Malignaggi has disrespected you, Khan, Pacquiao and pretty much everybody in Wild Card gym. Khan says he wants to hurt Malignaggi badly? Does he really mean it or this is all fight hype?

Freddie Roach
  (11:16 AM)

I think it's fight talk. Both guys want to win the fight. We don't want to hurt anybody but we want to make a statement in the States and the only way we can do that is by knocking Paulie out.

Adriel (L.A.)

Freddie after seeing Mayweather easily beat Mosley did he show you anything in that fight that can pose a problem to Pacquiao?

Freddie Roach
  (11:17 AM)

No, Mayweather was hittable in the fight. I don't worry about Mayweather versus Pac. If Pacquaio hits Mayweather, he will finish him unlike Mosley.

Patrick (Chicago)

Coach, will we see Pacquiao fight in an orthodox stance if he fights Mayweather? I've seen you and him practice it on the mitts for the past couple camps. Cheers!

Freddie Roach
  (11:18 AM)

No, we were just playing when we were doing that.

Courtney Jackson (Lindenwold, NJ)

Hi freddie, do you think that malignaggi is a hard puncher?

Freddie Roach
  (11:19 AM)

He's only had five knockouts in his career so I don't see him as a hard puncher. I do respect him as a fighter though.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

How many fighters do you currently train?

Freddie Roach
  (11:19 AM)

14

JB (Toronto)

What's more important in a fighter: skills or heart/dedication?

Freddie Roach
  (11:19 AM)

Heart and dedication.

Jason (Newark, NJ)

Freddie, what do you think went wrong for Mosley after Round 2?

Freddie Roach
  (11:20 AM)

Not being his trainer and not being in his camp it's hard for me to say.

Homer (OH)

Hey Freddie, do you think the jump from 135 to 140 helped Amir's chin, like the jump from 140 to 147 did for Miguel Cotto?

Freddie Roach
  (11:21 AM)

Sometimes when people struggle to make weight it helps fighters to go up. I think making weight is overrated and that fighters should fight at their normal weight.

Jerome (Manila)

Coach, I know that you've trained a lot of boxers but is there any fighter that you wish you could train or work with?

Freddie Roach
  (11:22 AM)

No, I'm very satisfied with the guys I have.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

How could you balance a job as an HBO commentator when you have so many fighters who fight on HBO?

Freddie Roach
  (11:23 AM)

I just did that for fun to see what it was like. I don't think I have a future in broadcasting but you never know!

jack (fort collins)

hey freddie, did you see your buddy mickey in iron man 2?

Freddie Roach
  (11:23 AM)

Yes, Mickey invited me to the premier.

Homer (OH)

Freddie, have you heard back from David Haye about hiring you as a trainer?

Freddie Roach
  (11:24 AM)

I've talked to David's trainer in England so there's been contact.

Justine (Wellington NZ)

Manny will retire soon. Will boxing be the same for you??? And what is it about this sport do you love so much?

Freddie Roach
  (11:25 AM)

I don't think I'm going to retire until I die or just can't do it anymore. I love the science of the sport.

alun white mountain (canada)

why bob arum is considering margarito to fight manny pacquiao? manny will not gain anything and its just doesn't make sense. who is margarito anyway?

Freddie Roach
  (11:25 AM)

I agree!

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Being that you trained Anderson Silva a bit, do you think he could hang with top level boxers in a boxing match?

Freddie Roach
  (11:26 AM)

Not yet, he needs more work.

Freddie Roach
  (11:27 AM)

Thanks everyone for the chat. Be sure to watch Khan/Malignaggi Saturday night on HBO.
