Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat session. We've got a great fight tomorrow night in Vazquez-Marquez 4 and an excellent co-feature with Perez-Mares. Should be a great show. There are also lots of fights coming up so be sure to check the fight schedule on ESPN.com and be on the lookout for today's massive notebook and a new blog today, not to mention several other blogs this week. So let's get to it.

phil (west seneca, ny)

went to my first televised fight sat. and man i couldn't believe the atmosphere. Those khan fan's were annoying! What did you think of the atmosphere?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Hope you had fun. The atmosphere was good but nothing all that memorable to me.

Jason (Boston, MA)

Is Francisco Osorio a legit challenge for Demetrius Andrade or will this be another waste of time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

The fight is not happening. Spoke to Artie Pelullo, Andrade's co-promoter, last night. Andrade's opponent had an expired passport and had overstayed his visa and was arrested at the airport trying to board his flight for Texas, so the fight was scrapped. Andrade will instead return on Artie's next ESPN2 show June 18 in Spokane, Washington.

Marc (Maryland)

How do see Vazquez-Marquez IV playing out?? Despite being older, it seems like Marquez is the fresher of the two fighters. I would give him the slight lean to even up the score. What do you think? Thanks Dan, keep up the great work.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I agree that Marquez is probably the fresher fighter. Obviously, it's anyone's fight. Who knows? It'll be bombs away again I am sure. But I lean to Marquez winning the fight and evening things up. I think he's not nearly as damaged as Vazquez and didn't have as many injuries from the first three fights as Vazquez. I also thought he looked a bit better in his tune-up fight than Vazquez, who really, really struggled. All that said, I expect another all out war for as long as it lasts.

Stevey Nipas CA [via mobile]

Whats Good Dan? Ur awesome easily best Espn Chatter. Vic Ortiz do you think he has what it takes to beat guys like Khan, Bradley, Alexander? His heart has been questioned, but hes got some tools to work with

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think Ortiz has the ability. I am just not sure he has the mentality.

Nareg (Beantown)

D$ - From the sounds of it, DLH is contemplating comeback...? Think he's thinking he's not such a shot fighter after seeing what Pac is doing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I joke with Richard Schaefer all the time by asking him when Oscar is coming back. Could he? I suppose sure he could. I have always felt from the day he retired he would eventually take another fight. Whether he is planning it at this point, I have no idea.

Drew (Akron)

Marquez is definitely HOF-bound right? But what about Vazquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I think they both eventually are elected.

Allen (Boston)

Dan: You have repeatedly written that Dirrell dominated his super six fight with Abraham. I have to disagree with you. It appeared to me that Dirrell was lucky to get out of there with a victory. During the 11th round, Dirrell was not just fighting defensivley, he was running for his life. I thought Abraham had a decent chance of knocking him out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I don't agree. Abraham had a couple of good moments and was coming on a little late in the fight, but Dirrell played with him for most of the fight and was easily winning.

Craig D. (Philly)

Dan, when fighters are unofficially weighed in the night of the fight are they wearing their underwear like for the official weigh in or are they already dressed for the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

It's far less formal than the actual weigh in. They could be wearing clothes, maybe just shorts. It all depends and is meant to give viewers just a rough idea of how much weight they've put on since the official weigh in.

Christmas 2009 (ohio)

Dan, who do you see facing Devon Alexander in August?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I am told that Don King, who is in Germany this weekend for the Chagaev-Meehan heavyweight eliminator, was also there to meet with Andras Kotelnik and is close to a deal for him to fight Alexander.

Jackson (IA)

After watching Khan this weekend, is there a more "skilled" trio at the top of any other division? Bradley, Alexander, and Khan must be three of the most technically sound, fast, pure boxers I've seen in a while.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Very good point. All three have crazy speed and are young. It's a great division at the top.

Brandon (San Diego)

post your question or commentDan, So I saw that B-Hop was sitting next to Richard Schaffer at the Khan-Malignaggi fight... Is it safe to say that the fences have been mended and all is well between B-Hop and Golden Boy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Yes, Richard told me the other night that they are "cool" and that they have made up and love each other.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Hey Dan, I really enjoy the random thought blogs, always entertaining. Please keep them coming. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Thanks. You got two doses this week!

Rob (Denton, Tx)

If Marquez beats Diaz, do you see him getting into the mix at 140 ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Yes. I think if he wins, there will be attractive fights for him at 140. The leading one would be against Khan. They're both with Golden Boy and that's a fight that has already been explored but didn't come off. I think it could if Marquez wins and Khan also wins a fight being planned for July 31 in England.

Derek (Chicago, IL)

Dan, an educated guess please on David Haye?s next opponent.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I still think there is a decent chance he faces a Klitschko next.

Charles (Philly)

So, is it official that the Ward-Green fight next month will be in Oakland? I guess that's just the economics of the sport, but it does seem a little unfair, doesn't it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

It is official. It will be in Oakland. I don't think it's unfair at all. It's business.

Robert the Genius ((Greater Philly / Southern NJ))

In your recent article you mentioned that Oscar is just the figurehead for GBP. But wasn't he present for the Floyd-Manny negotiations with Daniel Weinstein? Pretty high level stuff for someone who is just a figure head wouldn't you say? Care to rethink your position?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I questioned if he wanted to become just a figurehead. Read it again so-called genius.

Steve (NYC)

Thoughts on Shannon Briggs return and his two bum fight coming up this month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Couldn't care less. Let him fight somebody other than a complete stiff before I would have even remote interest.

NYPD Blue (NYC)

Dan what did you think of Teddy Atlas's suggestion last week on FNF that Kermit Cintron dove out of the ring to get out of a tough fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Didn't agree with him at all. Shocking right?

Nicole (NTW) (Becerra)

DTM! Why don't I get a missing's persons blog when I'm not at the fights? :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I'll try better next time. I am honored to have the great NTW, Richard Schaefer's and Oscar De La Hoya's assistant, join the Freak chat! It's a great day!

Tony (San Diego)

Dan, can you explain the difference between HBO BAD fights versus its World Championship Boxing shows? They both now basically start at the same time and I don?t see a significant difference in quality between the shows ? Williams-Cintron (WCB) = Khan-Malinaggi (BAD).

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

BAD fights are generally lower license fees and often involve fighters who have not reached the WCB level in terms of accomplishment or stardom.

Bobby (Louisville, Ky)

What realistic fights do you see for Sugar Shane? honestly I would call it a career, unless you want to be a stepping stone. He's not getting any younger at 38

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I could see him still fighting Berto or maybe even Martinez at 154.

Marc (Claremont, CA)

Hi Dan. I will finally be going to my first live bout tomorrow at the Staples Center and all I have to say is Thank God for Mexican Fighters

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Have a blast.

Kimo (San Jose, CA)

Okay Dan. Best boxing broadcaster in your lifetime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I think we've been over this: The Lampley-Merchant team. Hands down.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, will there be RAD this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

YES!!! We will have a RAD chat following Vazquez-Marquez.

Charles (DFW)

I almost flipped out of my chair reading your latest polemic against the WBC. JC Chavez jr. #1 and Margacheato #2 at Jr. Middleweight? Are you kidding me? The only good that can come of this is Sergio Martinez gives Margacheato a shot at his title and beats him senseless.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

The WBC is a piece of crap. They should invent the WBC crap belt.

Charles (DFW)

The only thing worse than the WBC Diamond belt would be if they came up with a ranking system for it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Don't give them any suggestions.

Alan Brofka (Syosset, NY)

Emanuel Augustus coming back to ESPN... can he pull off another upset?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Who knows? But it should be fun.

Ethers (England)

Rumours of a Calzaghe and Khan card on July 31st??? Totally false right?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Joe may fight again, but it won't be a card with Khan.

Reid (Cleveland)

Would you agree that the jr lightweight division is the weakest division out there right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Did you read my blog from the other day?

Julio (Tucson, AZ )

Dan the Man?.Please settle a dispute between me a friend. We were discussing a dream matchup between Duran vs Chavez, both in their lightweight primes. I?m a huge fan of Mexican fighters but I honestly believe that Duran is the greatest Latino fighter ever and would win a close decision. What do you think??

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I mentioned that in a blog I wrote the other day, how I would have loved to see that fight. If it had happened, I would pick Duran.

bubba (ottawa il)

So wait, not only is DLH the most overated fighter of all-time, hes the most overated promoter to? LOL.Im kdding. Great blog by the way king freak.

Ethers (England)

Buy or Sell Khan fight Maidana on July 31st??

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Sell, not happening.

Notebook (ESPN)

I"M UP!!!!

Greg (Los Angeles)

Is King just blowing smoke or is their a chance of Mayorga-Sturm happening this summer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Probably blowing smoke, or smoking something.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Spectacular HBO fight card last week with the jr. welters - two solid fights. Thank God for HBO. And, in the day of inflated egos and a plethora of smack talking in sports, how refreshing was the sportsmanship displayed after both fights? Boxing hands down has the best sportsmanship in all of sports.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

It was a great card on paper and props to HBO and Golden Boy for putting it together. The fights didn't turn out great but you can only make the fight. Once the bell rings, you don't know what's going to happen. I do have to give credit to Malignaggi and Campbell for giving their opponents full credit for the victories. That is nice to see.

Eric (DC)

That picture of Marquez/Vazquez on the ESPN boxing page is rough! As much as I loved the trilogy -- I think it may be tough to watch if they're beating the snot out of each other just knowing the damage they may be doing.

chuzen (st. louis)

how about an update on bradley's next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Yes, he will be fighting Abregu. There will be a full story up soon.

Rags (NYC)

Do you think Malignaggi will call it a career? He seems smart enough and has earned a good living, but the only think (IMO) that kept him from breaking thru was a lack of power...

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I think Paulie is struggling with his decision right now. He can still beat lesser guys, but knowing Paulie, he's not in this sport to just hang on and beat nobodies. I think maybe he would fight one more time, get a win in a smaller fight and then call it a day. He's a great guy and I wish him well.

nypd blue (nyc)

WBC = WHATTA BUNCHA CRAP!

Ali (Tampa)

So is Sergio gonna defend at 154 or 160? More optioins at 154, including a big payday vs. Mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Totally up in the air. He and his team are still deciding what to do and exploring the options.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, at a family gathering we were discussing Saul Alvarez's huge market potential. But we're curious if he speaks English as well. Do you have any idea?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

He is learning English. I met him in Vegas when I was there for Mayweather-Mosley and he is trying. I think he'll get it and that will definitely help him in terms of marketing himself in the US.

Jake (England)

Khan-Prescott rematch end of July then Maidana in November?? Any chance of thatr?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I think it's possible.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Who's the first boxer that comes to your mind when I say "Quitter"

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Andrew Golota.

Randy (NYC)

Excellent performance from Kastidis... he looked like a fighter out there, instead of just a brawler

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I agree. He looked very, very good against a good opponent. I watched the fight on the Net and enjoyed it. Got the DVD in the mail yesterday. Katsidis is one of my favorites.

POPS (DALLAS TX)

WHY DID U GIVE FLOYD MAYWEATHER A 8 IN ROUND 2 DESPITE NO KNOCKDOWN

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

WHY DO YOU KEEP YELLING?

Big Mike (Chicago)

Danimal, What are some other fighters that went to a 4th, 5th+ fight? SRR vs the Ragin Bull comes to mind. What else?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Courtesy of my buddy Steve Farhood:Jack Britton-Ted Kid Lewis (20 fights); Gene Tunney-Harry Greb (5 fights); SRR-Lamotta (6 fights); Beau Jack-Bob Montgomery, Sadler-Pep, Jack-Ike Williams, Walcott-Charles, SRR-Fullmer, Bobby Chacon-Limon and Azumah Nelson-James Leija (4 fights).

Steve (Minneapolis)

WBC = Wanna Buy'a Championship?

David (Houston)

I am excited about tonight's "friday night fights" card. It should be fun.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I agree. Kim is a nice prospect and he's in with a solid vet in Ameth Diaz. And the Russian and Augustus could be a fun fight. And so you know -- I will be appearing tonight via Skype.

leeroy (w.o.w.)

oscar is sexy but not as sexy as brian kenny. you da man dan

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I'll pass that along to my esteemed colleague.

Marcial (Chicago, Il)

Is Saul Alvarez gonna be on the undercard of Marquez-Diaz II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

No. Alvarez is supposed to fight this summer in Mexico.

Brody (New York)

Dan, Lots of ESPN blogs are available on Kindle. Any chance yours will be in the future?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I have no idea how that works. That would be cool though if it was.

Chris D. (Chicago)

How about Paulie Malignaggi as commentator? I hated that guy when I lived in New York, but he's really grown on me. He knows boxing, he's a straight-shooter, and could really add color to the broadcasts... plus he might boost ratings for people who are flipping channels and mistake BAD for Jersey Shore!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I can see him as a broadcaster. He knows the sport very well, has personality and credibility as a top fighter. He would need to talk a little slower for sure. Lou DiBella, his promoter, told me he wants to put Paulie on his Broadway Boxing cards in NY to get him some experience. I think it would be a good move.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

What was ESPN's logic for not approving Mike Jones vs. Irving Garcia? I've seen a lot of worse main events on ESPN2 promoted by Golden Boy, of course.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I have no idea. I felt ESPN should have bought the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Hold up -- Bat Phone breaking news.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Good one folks! Gary Shaw just told me he has a done deal for Alfredo Angulo to fight Joachim Alcine in the HBO televised opener on July 17 when Bradley faces Abregu. Wow. What a show!

Chris D. (Chicago)

Wow, that is good!

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I AGREE!

Tony (Reno,Nv)

If you did a promo with the Love Child...would it look like the old one with Christy Martin and Charlie Steiner?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Oh my God ! Alcine is going to get murdered ...

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

It's a very interesting fight. Alcine has been a good fighter and he's got some slickness. I have him ranked 6th. It's a very solid fight to open an HBO BAD card. I love it.

jack (fort collins)

what's up with mike alvarado? do you think he could beat any of the top ten junior welters or does he need a bit more seasoning?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

He'll be back June 26 on the Top Rank Latun Fury undercard.

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

How big an upset would Al Sosnowski beating Vitali be? As big as Douglas beating Tyson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I would consider it a gargantuan upset. Huge. Massive. But nothing is as big as Douglas over Tyson.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

We have more news from the Bat E-mail.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Regardig the rumors of an Adamek-Michael Grant fight, they are true. This is from Adamek's promoter, Kathy Duva:We've made a deal with Grant and are now in the process of getting contracts signed. I'm still working on the exact site and date. It will be either in Newark or Atlantic City, depending on some logistical issues we are still working out.

Matt (portland,OR)

Jack Britton and Ted Kid Lewis fought 20 times?!?!?!?! Jeez those guys touched each other more then their wives.

Gino (The Bronx)

I find your continual defense of Andre Ward's preferential treatment in the Super Six quite nauseating.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I find your inability to understand basic economics laughable. And, it is his second fight in the tourney. No guarantee the third will be in Oakland.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I think we can assume that Adamek-Grant will not be picked up by the major networks....

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Probably not. Not a very good fight.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan has GBP talked about Kahn vs. Casamayor at all?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Haven't heard that mentioned but wouldn't surprise me if his name came up at some point.

Harley B (Ny)

Did you happen to see Irish prospect Jamie Kavanagh on the Malinaggi-Khan undercard? What so you think of him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I saw him and I was not too impressed. He got staggered in the first round but it was his pro debut. I'll dismiss it as nerver. But as a whole, I didn't think all that much. Guess we'll see how he develops.

Kent (St Catharines)

Dan, Adamek vs Grant is a joke. What has Grant done to deserve a fight like this? Is this just a case of Adamek's people wanting him to fight someone the size of the Wladimer and Vatali to see how he handles it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Could be, or it could also be that Main Events and Adamek can make money for an easy fight while waiting for a big name. I do give them credit -- they are doing things their way and not just sitting around waiting for HBO.

Kent (St Catharines)

Angulo vs Alcine excellent match up and makes a good show even better. Should be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Jim (Montreal Canada)

Looking at that picture of Vasquez and Marquez reminds me of how brutal spoty boxing is and should be banned. It is a travesty what these young men go through, no different than dog fighting.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

It's totally different than dog fighting. Vazquez and Marquez and all the other fighters have a choice about what they do. Nobody makes them fight, unlike a dog. Think much?

Keith H (Seattle)

Dan, that photo of Vazquez & Marquez on the boxing page is pretty brutal. Looking at it reminded me of a line used about the Thrilla in Manila: "Belts don't matter with these two, they're fighting for the championship of each other."

Ronnie (FLA)

Who's American debut had more sizzle....Prince Hamed or Kahn?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Definitely Hamed's. Not even close.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Alicine has good boxing skills and could take advantage of Angulos style but I did see Santos level Alicine with one punch and he is nowhere near the banger Angulo is and Angulos pressure could be too much for him. Perfect BAD fight.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Updates on Money-Pac negotiations have been nill. Does that mean that nothing's going on, or is it actually possible that they really are trying to negotiate behind closed doors without public squabbling??

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I don't think anything real is going on at the moment and I also think the sides will try to keep everything as quiet as possible.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

Adamek is going to probably end up fighting four times this year --- no other elite fighter can say that. You can't fault his promoters for not waiting their fighting to sit on the shelf like a stale loaf of bread.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

You're 100% right.

Tony Rome (Bronx)

DTM, what do you do when there is just way to much boxing on TV at one time for your DVR's to handle?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I have three DVRs. It's not an issue.

George (Fontana, CA)

Marquez wins via 7th round tko

chuzen (st. louis)

props to showtime on getting Mike Jones-Irving Garcia

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I love the fact that Antwone Smith will also be on the card.

Andrew (PA)

Where does Jake Lamotta rank all time

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

One of the best. And he's also a funny guy. Here's a quick story. So I'm in New York several years ago for a fight. And me and a bunch of writers and some boxing people are hanging out a place called Elaine's, pretty famous place. Anyway, LaMotta comes in and sees us and knows a few of the folks with us and comes over. He takes off his cowboy hat and says, "Hi guys, just wanted to introdudce myself. I'm Robert DeNiro." Absolutely hilarious. I almost fell out of my chair.

Rick (Saint Paul)

The people that complain about Ward getting to fight in Oakland need to look at the crowd that showed up for Williams-Cintron. None of the Super Six guys are big draws in the U.S. so you have to have the fights close to their hometowns to earn any money.

JAVIER (PUERTO RICO)

dan I read in the notebook Carita lopez is being considered for Nonoto Donaire considering the card is in puertorico Should showtime take that into consideration. also what the latest on the gamboa vs caballero sweeptakes?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I don't think Showtime has any issue with Lopez in that fight. It's a perfectly good fight. I think it's up to the promoters trying to make a deal with any of those opponents. Gamboa-Caballero = nothing new.

Manuel (san jose ca)

Is a Lamont Peterson vs Devon Alexander fight possible for August 7th? It makes perfect sense, and who do you think Bradley will fight in July?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I think it would be a worthy fight, but the Alexander camp has no interest and that bout has not been explored.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Dan, do you know about how many viewers Showtime Championship boxing attracts? I know HBO usually does well over 1 million and sometimes more than 2.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I don't know specifics, but I can tell you that from what I was told, the Khan-Malignaggi fight was the highest rated fight (and overall show) of the year so far and the hightest rated boxing show on HBO since Klitschko-Arreola.

Leo (Montana)

I hope they have a heart defibulator on hand for Gus Johnson tomorrow.

Matt (CT)

Let's squash the debates... did Pacquiao really defeat, in your opinion, Juan Manuel Marquez twice to complete his executions of the Three Amigos (Barrerra, Morales, JMM)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

As I have stated many times, I was at both fights and I scored both close for Marquez.

Kris (Scottsdale, Arizona)

Hey Dan! Have you ever considered becoming a promoter or manager?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

No. Never.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

I saw in the AP story on the ESPN boxing page that Vic Darchinyan won a unanimous decision over Eric Barcelona, and that one of the judges scored it 120-103!!! Is that the most lopsided score you've heard in a 12 round fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

It's because Barcelona was knocked down three times and also had two points deducted.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Michael Grant is still alive?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Apparently.

Everardo ((Chicago, IL))

Dan, I'd like to add ONE to your recent blog's "billion-plus reasons why the WBC is an absolutely disgusting organization": the WBC chose to recognize Valero (before his death) its champion emeritus--even after the reports of Valero attacking his wife came out--instead of suspending him like it suspended Arreola for cussing. Way to be an ambassador to the sport Soiledman.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Who do you got in the Perez-Mares fight tomorrow night? I'm thinking Mares will hurt Perez to the body early and stop him in the mid to late rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Good fight. For some reason, I lean to Perez.

Bobby (New York)

Dan, do you know when Showtime usually shows a replay of their live fights? I checked out my guide and it doesn't look like they show one all week as opposed to HBO doing 3 in one week. Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

They show several but always on Sho2 a couple of hours after the live card. Usually at 1 am ET.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Great job this week with keeping the freaks informed. In reference to your "DWTS's" comment in your blog.......I am picking THE Nicole Scherzinger to win it all on a spliy decision!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I think she'll win too but I'm also pulling for my ESPN colleague Erin Andrews. They've both been great all season.

Thelonious (Brooklyn)

Hey Dan, I'm a relatively new boxing fan(been watching fights for about the last year) and have found your chats a great resource. I was wondering if you could recommend 5 fights for me to watch on youtube, that are must-sees for any boxing fan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Check out this link for some help: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=3094862

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

WBC = We Banish Cussers & Wife Beating's Cool.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

LOL!

Bryan (Spring)

Dan, when are you going to fight in a celebrity boxing event?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Right around never.

Willie (Houston, TX)

Dan, anything in your ESPN contract that forbids you from betting on boxing? I mean, you DO have a lot of inside information.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

No, nothing.

Cary (Raleigh, NC)

WBC = World's Best Con-men

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

Can we also please chastise the WBA for allowing Kali Meehan to be near a title eliminator?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Yes. They suck. How's that?

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Dan, have you heard anything about the possibility of Antonio Escalante fighting Ponce de Leon any time soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

It's a fight that was offered to the camps for the July 31 HBO PPV undercard.

Chris D. (Chicago)

I just got a Dancing with the Stars update in a boxing chat -- question: did you get your wife hooked because of Holyfield and Mayweather, or did she get you hooked because of a soap star?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I started watching regularly when Mayweather was on. I had watched a few times before that. My wife picked it up when I did. So thank, Floyd.

Ticco (Boston)

Hi Dan! I wanted to know that I really enjoy the blogs! With all the publicity that Mike Tyson is getting recently (reality show, interviews, movies), do you think we will ever see Iron Mike in the Ring again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I hope not.

Romeo (DC)

How about Judah-Malignaggi on an undercard of a Fall HBO card? It would be even better if the event was in New York.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I think that ship has probably sailed.

Ali (Southfield, MI)

FYI... It's Pacman's birthday today! The Japanese arcade game turns 30!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I know! My wife mentioned that to me earlier. It made me feel old.

James (Athens)

Speaking of which, Floyd didn't win his DWTS so technically, there is a blueprint on how to beat him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Good point.

Bryan (Springdale)

Dan, you have been appointed Boxing Czar by President Obama....your first decision is...?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Order Pacquiao-Mayweather and then eliminate the WBC and WBA for crimes against boxing.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

I know after the last Olympics, GOlden Boy said it was going to try to restore and revamp US Amatuer boxing, do you know if anything was done or is being done.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I remember when that was announced and since then I have heard absolutely nothing.

Charles R. (Jax, Fl.)

DTM, Read the notebook today and saw the write up about Sergei Dzinziruk facing Paul Williams. Dzinziruk's style wasn't very crowd pleasing, but I see him being a problem for the punisher at 154, your thoughts??

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He'd be a problem for anyone at 154. He's skilled, experienced and has a great jab. I know it was not the most exciting fight, but remember also that he hadn't fought for like 18 months and that it takes two to tango.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Do you have all the 24/7's recorded as well ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Yes, every episode of each series.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Willie (Houston, TX) Dan, anything in your ESPN contract that forbids you from betting on boxing? I mean, you DO have a lot of inside information.Dan Rafael (1:21 PM) No, nothing.Just to be clear, even though it's not in contract, DTM still doesn't wager on fights or other sporting events. The last sports bet I can recall he made is when I bet him dinner that Syracuse would make the Final Four in 1996. I won.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Mrs. D$ has spoken.

Roy (Reno)

Is it just me? I have ZERO interest in Khan-Marquez. Khan is too big, young, strong and fast for Marquez. No need for Marquez to be fed to Khan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I think it depends how Khan looks this summer and how Marquez looks against Diaz in the rematch.

Scotty (MD)

Hey Freaks, you can hear the King Freak talk boxing tomorrow morning at 10:00 (ET) on espn1300.com!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

LOL. Good call. I will indeed a be a guest on the Ballroom Boxing Report!

Mike (Albany)

Dan...I REALLY REALLY do not like youNo not at all

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Thanks. I am also thinking happy thought about you.

Arturo ((Perry))

Dan what is Chris Arreola next move?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Chalupa three-pack?

Tom (UK)

What are Ryan Rhodes chances of a world title shot if he wins tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Probably pretty good. He's close to a mandatory position.

Noel (U.K.)

Is Ricky Hatton done?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

With his pint?

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,To keep some of the rumors of favortism at bay by misguided freaks do we expect the assistants from Top Rank, Sauerland, Gary Shaw, and Dibella Promotions to join in the chat soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

If they want to join, they are welcome to follow in the footsteps of Nicole!

Chris (London)

I'm not sure why Khan is pushing so much for the Katisidis fight. I think it would be a good fight, but that Katsidis gives him major trouble.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Nobody is "pushing" for the fight. It is one possibility.

Dave (Hell, Michigan)

How did you score Mayweather-Castillo I?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I had it a draw (watching it on TV).

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Dan, your wife really logs into your chats? I thought that was just chat fans being funny. Why doesnt she give us her pick on Mayweather-Pacman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

She really does check out the chats. I don't think she's made her pick yet.

Matt (Philly)

Is Dzinziruk any different that Karmazin at 154? I don't know Dzinziruk, but Karmazin never looked good after winning the 154 title.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Much different. Dzinziruk is quicker and has a better jab.

Randy (Cincinnati, OH)

speaking of boxing talk on the radio, Tony Paige on the FAN in NY seems to talk more boxing than any other sports talk host. Have you been on his show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Tony does talk a lot of boxing. He's a boxing guy for sure. I have been on his show.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Great blog! Gotta give Floyd credit for not paying the sanction fee for that stupid diamond belt or the regular stupid belt!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Credit where credit is due.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan....question about sanctioning fees. Are they flat fees or are they percentages of the purse ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Usually one or the other with a cap.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, I'd really like to meet Dibella, he seems like a guy you can hang out with and talk boxing for hours. I'm going to be at the Ward/Green fight so I just wanted to know if he's approachable

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

The DiB is definitely approachable. He loves to talk boxing.

Rich (Evanston)

Big D-In your excellent blog, you came up with a series of "dream" fights you'd have loved to have seen, including Louis-Ali/ the Sugar Rays/ and Duran/Chavez. Take it a step further- who do you think might have won those fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Ali over Louis (too big and fast), Duran over Chavez (as mentioned earlier).

Jimmy (Chapel Hill, NC)

Dan, ever consider letting your wife join you on the Friday chats? I think it would be rather? uh, interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

She actually expressed interest in that. We'll see.

Phil (west seneca, ny)

As usual terrific job by referee steve smoger saturday. He did a great job.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I agree. I have always thought Smoger was one of the very best referees in the sport and has been for many years.

Marc (Philly)

Shawn Porter fights tomorrow on gofightlive.tv and its FREE

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

There's your plug. Now go stalk USS Cunningham.

Joe (PA)

Who is doing Cotto-Foreman for HBO Max or Larry?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Max.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

I'm happy to be a chat guest!

Jack (Boston, MA)

Okay, Dan, only one piece of advice for Gus Johnson tomorrow: DECAF!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Wow, that is a great suggestion!

Tommy (Detroit)

Hey Danno, got a beef I am hoping you can help with. I am not sure how you get booked on there but Wilbon and crew again this week talked about Boxing being dead. Could you please get booked on the show if Pac/MM gets made and set these guys straight? Please? - Thanks from all the freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

They're clueless about boxing.

Myron (San Francisco)

Dan, quit bellyaching about fights not being shown on American TV. Everyone on this chat probably has high speed internet and can get EVERY SINGLE FIGHT on the internet and you know it!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Of course I know it you dope, but I prefer to watch the fights from the comfort of my living room instead of my office and if it was on regular TV it would have more exposure to casual fans who aren't going to search the Internet for a fight stream.

Ali (Tampa)

What happen to your blog about Lennox Lewis? How is he doing, and what is he planning to do next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Ummmm, I wrote it last Saturday.

Charles (DFW)

Pacman might be 30, but nothing tops Galaga.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I was a big fan of Galaga, Miss Pac Man and Donkey Kong.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I want to find one of the old machines restored and put it in my basement.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, don?t undersell Arthur Abraham so quickly. He still leads the Super Six in points and if the rematch were held in Germany, I say he knocks Dirrell cold.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

How am I underselling him?

Rico (Landover, MD)

Dan, is Pascal going to be ready to fight Dawson or is there a good chance of a postponement?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

As I wrote in last week's notebook, according to his promoter, Yvon Michel, he is fine and in Florida with his strength coach and getting ready to fight.

Matt (Philly)

Although Vazquez-Marquez IV is sure to be another classic, Im more so looking forward to Mares-Perez on the under card. I got the chance to see Mares at the Borgata a few years ago and have been a die hard fan ever since. But he definitely has his hands full with Perez. How do you see this fight going?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Tough fight for both guys. I think Perez is the better puncher, Mares is probably the more skillful guy. I expect an really high-class fight.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Miss Pac Man = Jinkie?

Popo (Dan's House)

Meow! I want to be a chat guest too!

Jake (Arl Hts, Il)

Danimal,What are we going to do next Saturday? We have been spoiled the last 5-6 weeks.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Watch Klitschko-Sosnowski on PPV? Maybe go out?

Mike (Richmond, VA)

Dan, saw that ESPN now has a regular MMA news show. I would love to see a boxing equivalent. How about it? Care to make the weekly trek to Bristol if called?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I'd love to see it happen.

yis1 (nyc)

are they expecting a good crowd for the fight at staples

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Gary Shaw told me they expect a crowd of about 10,000.

Larry (San Diego, CA)

Dan, a couple weeks ago, Jim Lampley intimated that Al Haymon was the reason a Mayweather-P Williams fight won?t happen because he advises both fighters. Based on your knowledge, do you concur with his observation?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Yes.

Steve (Athens, Ohio)

Is Adamek the best HW in the world right now not named Vitali or Wladimir?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I wouldn't get that carried away. Beating Arreola and Estrada and a totally shot Golota does not do it.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Dan is it safe to say that the Daniel Ponce de Leon-Jhonny Gonzalez fight isn't happening now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Correct, mainly because Gonzalez got cut in his fight last week.

Lou (Detroit)

And I though I was the only one who thought Wladimir and Lysacek were twins! I wonder if Evan throws a mean left jab.

Mark (WI)

Just bought tickets for Marquez v Diaz 2, any new undercard updates?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Nothing definite yet but there are whole variety of possibilities that Schaefer has mentioned to me. From what I have heard from him, most would quite Freak-appealing.

steve (nyc)

is HBO interested in Wladimir vs Povetkin?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I think they have interest. I think like everything they'd rather see Klitschko-Haye.

julius Caesar (baltimore, MD)

enlighten me please...how can pacquaio be no.1 in your P4P list yet #2 to mayweather in the welterweight division. how can he be no.1 overall if he can't even be no.1 in his own weight division.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I'm not going over that again. Go read the past transcripts.

Leon (Santa Fe, NM)

Dan, I too, worry about what another Vasquez-Marquez fight would do to each other. Part of me would like to see them both ride off into the sunset after the 4th bout with their faculties still intact.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Here's the thing -- they are going to fight period. So if they're going to fight, and take the rish that goes with any fight, why not fight each other and make the biggest possible payday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Hey Freaks -- check out the link to my latest news story: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=5208294

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Why do you think Khan/Malignaggi did so well in terms of ratings?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

A few reasons -- it was an interesting match, it got a lot of hype because of Khan's visa problems (more pub than expected), it took place in New York and it followed the HBO premiere of The Hangover, a huge movie.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Papers in the UK are reporting a possible Calzaghe/Hopkins rematch. This is a joke, right?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Not a joke at all. I wrote about it myself today in my notebook.

john (dublin)

is Mundine fighting Golovkin

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

No, he's ducking him.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Very smart for HBO to air The Hangover before the fights last weekend. Never saw the movie and it was the perfect opportunity to watch it and loved it!

Eric (North Hollywood)

Hey Dan, Did Gary Shaw mention where the Bradley-Abregu fight might take place?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Did you read the news article? http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=5208294

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, did you write that Bradley/Abregu article while chatting? Do you have eight hands?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I finished it during the chat. I am a capable multi-tasker.

Alan Garner (LA)

I'm not supposed to be within two hundred feet of a school... or a Chuck E. Cheese

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

These are my readers.

Alan (LA, CA)

Tigers love pepper...they hate cinnimon...

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

LOL! I love that movie.

Jeff (CA)

On the WBO website it states they gave the promoters of Angulo & Dzinziruk 15 days to reach an agreement or fight will go to purse bid. How does this effect the Angulo/Alcine fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

It won't. Shaw promotes Angulo and Dzinziruk. I am sure something will be worked out. At worst, Angulo gives up the interim title, which means nothing anyway.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Ever notice that since Wlad did that YouTube video calling David Haye a b*tch, the previously verbose Haye has developed laryngitis and speaks only through Adam Booth?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I did notice. Haye's silence is deafening.

Mark (Windsor, CT)

So, the WBO has ordered Sergei Dzinziruk to face Alredo Angulo next- does the fight happen or will Angulo vacate the interim title and still fight on the undercard of Bradley-Abregu against Joachim Alcine as I read in your most recent article?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Angulo is on the HBO undercard with or without interim title.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

I missed the Lennox Lewis blog as well. I guess it was replaced with a more current blog on the home page in between the times I last check the boxing page. I was looking forward to it as well so will check the archives for it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

You can look in my blog archive. They are all there, every blog I have ever done for ESPN.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

For all of you who are asking -- here is the link to the blog on Lennox Lewis: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5191872/lennox-lewis-speaks-hbo-departure

Mark (ATL)

Any concern Bradley is going to have problems making 140 after his fight w/Abregu?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

The kind of shape Bradley is always in, I would hope not. I sorta doubt it.

AP (Statue of Liberty)

Who would you favor in a featherweight super six with Chris John, Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Celestino Caballero, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Elio Rojas?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

What a great division isn't it? Lots of interesting fights. I think it's wide open with a lot of even matches. I honestly don't know. I think you can make a strong case for Gamboa or Caballero.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, I want you to co-star in the ESPN Sportscenter commercial featuring Manny and Floyd being asked to donate blood at a Red Cross mobile unit outside the ESPN headquarters in Bristol. You game?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I'm in.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

If nothing else, Bradley-Abregu should be a heck of an entertaining scrap. Bradley appears to have most of the advantages in the matchup, but Abregu's got heart. Do you think there's much chance for the upset?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

If Abregu can land, it could be interesting.

Phil (LA)

Please puts some pants on...I find it alot odd that I have to ask you twice...

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

One of the great movie lines ever.

Charles (DFW)

If you had to do one of the following, which one would it be:1. Attend a soccer game at the World Cup2. Attend a dinner in honor of Jose Sulaiman3. Stick your head in an alligator's mouth

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

In order: 3, 1, 2.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Dan any chance that Nonito Donaire could get Hugo Cazares in for July?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

It was mentioned but not happening.

adam (philly)

Do you believe that Bradley is ducking Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Not at all whatsoever.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Thanks Dan, I just read the Lennox Lewis blog and agree with him that HBO should have at least allowed him an on-air goodbye to the fans.

The Cop (The Hangover)

(Taser shot) In the face!!! Oh-uh he's still going! He's still going! Relax everybody, sometimes with these big boys they need 2 shots

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

LOL! I need to watch that movie again.

Charles (DFW)

Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield for the WBC Over-the-Hill Diamond Champion Emeritus Belt sponsored by Depends.

Paul (Honolulu)

Dan, who passed on the Hagler-Leonard rematch? That would have been ridiculously huge. It is also funny to realize that fight was not on today's customary Saturday night.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Hagler. He got offered crazy money and passed.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Enjoy tonight's good FNF card and Vazquez-Marquez IV tomorrow night on Showtime. Be sure to check out today's notebook and all of this week's blog. And don't forget to be here Saturday night after Vazquez-Marquez IV for a RAD -- Rafael After Dark -- chat! See you then.
