Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (3:02 PM)

Hey Sportsnation. What a boring time to be an NBA fan!! Thanks for coming to the chat-we'll be doing 3pm sessions this summer because I'm in my gym through noon each day. Lots of questions already-keep 'em coming."Nepal. N. E. P. A. L. Viva Nepal!! Viva Nepal!!"

Tim (Columbia, MO)

What are the chances that we get an NBA team here in Missouri in the next 10 years?

David Thorpe
  (3:02 PM)

Extraordinarily poor. That's the best I can do.

Martin (VA)

Is Turner really the best fit for the Sixers? A front court of Speights, Young and/or Cousins/Favors would be strong woudn't it? How hard is it to find a 2 in this league?

David Thorpe
  (3:04 PM)

Lots of questions on this. We have lots to figure out before we can guess. Favors has a chance here to go #2-he has to be terrific in workouts-the way Howard beat out Okafor.

KE (MPLS)

What should my Wolves do with #4? We don't need a PF but every Mock has had either Cousins or Favors slotted right there.

David Thorpe
  (3:05 PM)

The Wolves need a top flight wing scorer, no doubt. Brewer is a perfect compliment to a player like that. They have the assets to move up and get Turner, or get a vet from a team.

Tim (Columbia, MO)

Might as well give the Lakers the trophy now, right?

David Thorpe
  (3:05 PM)

Wrong.

Rick (Oakland)

The Bulls need a 2 that can shoot the 3. Would Xavier Henry, James Anderson, or Paul George be their best draft choice?

David Thorpe
  (3:05 PM)

At this point I'd lean Henry, but Anderson is in the running.

KB24Gets#5 (Eugene, OR)

Hey Thorpedo, big Lakers fan here. I've been very satisfied with Kobe's play lately, as well our big men, but the celtics seem like a huge threat. Let's say the Lakers and Celtics meet in the finals again this year. Who do you have winning it, and why?

David Thorpe
  (3:06 PM)

If the Finals began today, I'd lean Boston. But they don't, so I won't.

Fbook friend (Internet)

Thanks for posting that you were going to be on The Herd show today. But next time, can you let us know that you'll only be on for 1 minute? I ran to my car to listen, and you were on and off before I could even tweet what was happening.

David Thorpe
  (3:06 PM)

Sorry. I'll do better next time! I'm at David B. Thorpe on Facebook for anyone interested.

Thomas (Los Angeles)

Which 4 players from all of NBA history would you pick to put around LeBron? In other words, give us the best case scenario, or the archetypes for the perfect LeBron-centric team....

David Thorpe
  (3:08 PM)

I love this question. Let's all answer it. At first blush, I'd go Magic, Reggie Miller, Bron, Duncan, and young Shaq.

mikhail p. (new jersey)

what do you think of Favors in the frontcourt next to Lopez?

David Thorpe
  (3:10 PM)

That's the question. And I'm not ready to say it's a great pairing. Need to see more Favors first. Lopez can play inside, and needs space. Favors may be a bit too similar, but with more athleticism of course.

Gerard (Sacramento,CA)

Who do you think the Kings should select with the number 5 pick to compliment Tyreke Evans?

David Thorpe
  (3:10 PM)

Has to be a big or a 3, right? Or they could trade.

Steve (Cleveland)

PG: Isiah ThomasSG: MillerSF: Bron BronPF: NowitzkiC: Kareem

David Thorpe
  (3:12 PM)

Great team. But my team would hurt you in transition and we'd exploit Zeke and Dirk inside.

Brandon (Phoenix, AZ)

Thoughts on Stoudemire's quote on Odom? Shouldn't he just shut his yapper?

David Thorpe
  (3:12 PM)

Indeed.

Peter (Indianapolis)

Of the incoming NBA players that you work with, what's the most glaring skill/ability that they lack?

David Thorpe
  (3:13 PM)

It's a long list, typically. Balance on their shot. Soft dribbling. Play too much at one speed. Weak off hand. Etc.

Josh (Fond du Lac)

I just read your "Building around LeBron" article. Is it just me or are you basically saying he should go to Chicago?

David Thorpe
  (3:13 PM)

Not at all.

Mike (Irvine, CA)

absolutely stunned that Boston is up 2-0! with a guy like Ewing teaching why hasn't Howard developed any back to the basket game? unless he is getting lobs or spinning baseline he has no post game. what gives??

David Thorpe
  (3:14 PM)

Question-who made the most jumphooks from the left block this season in the NBA? Answer-D12.

Mike (vegas)

hey david, hope i don't take your job soon....im sure after reading all my posts that are 100% accurate, and reading your posts comparing kobe to joshpowell as you did 2 months ago, espn should come to their senses and fire you and hollinger for clearly showing biases and knowing nothing about the sportsorry, truth hurtsyou SUCK

David Thorpe
  (3:16 PM)

Mike, I saw all 100 of your questions. It is true, I may suck. But Hollinger does not. I don't remember comparing Powell to Kobe, unless it was to say they both have ears. Yes, espn could come to their senses and fire me. If they do, what will you do then on Wednesday afternoons?

Joe (Minneapolis)

What is Wes Johnson's upside? He seems like a nice player, but a 23 year-old who really only had one big year in college screams role player to me.

David Thorpe
  (3:16 PM)

Me too. Nothing wrong with that, but drafting him at 5 isn't great.

Bronson (NYC)

Billups, The Glide, Duncan, The Dream

David Thorpe
  (3:17 PM)

I like this team. But it does not take into account Bron's speed.

UKfan (Lexington)

Thorpinator, my world's have collided. I'm a diehard Big Blue guy, and I love J Wall. I also love your analysis, and the production you seem to get from your players. So now I read that Wall is coming to train with you. I could not be happier, and I know the Wizards will be so glad he is with you.

David Thorpe
  (3:19 PM)

It would be interesting if that happened. I'm pleased that his agent and managers think I know what I'm doing (Mike in Vegas would disagree). But until it does, I'll just keep plugging away with the players that are here.

embgar (barcelona)

People always focus on speed, quickness, leaping ability, etc. What are the athletic (and other) traits that are most important in judging talent, especially ones that most fans don't generally think about?

David Thorpe
  (3:20 PM)

Strong production in areas that seem surprising (like an undersized rebounder). Passing skills. Ability to figure things out. Capacity for work.

charlymc (oxford)

Do you think the Cavs would still be playing today if they had gone small and tried to run the Celts out of the gym?

David Thorpe
  (3:20 PM)

Possibly. But Boston is playing at a high level.

Damon (Santa Cruz, CA)

PG: Stockton, SG: West, SF: Lebron, PF: Malone, C: Chamberlain. Stockton passes well (so does West), the rest of them score like no tomorrow.

David Thorpe
  (3:21 PM)

Could Jerry West drive left?

Suzie (Dallas)

Way to go David Thorpe!!!! We love you!!! Don't mind Mike from Vegas!!!! He's just jealous bc you have the BEST job in the world!!!! I love you David!!!!!!!!

David Thorpe
  (3:21 PM)

Mom, I told you to stop pretending to be somebody else.

Bryan (Boston)

Regarding Stoudamire...do you think he is just venting because his mom was arrested?

David Thorpe
  (3:22 PM)

Venting is not the right word. He's in pain about it, I'm sure.

Charlie (ATX)

Kevin Johnson, MJ, Bron, younger KG, Hakeem

David Thorpe
  (3:22 PM)

I tried to stay away from his Airness. But this is an amazing team. Magic, though, never lost to KJ.

Kory (Columbus, Oh)

What kind of pro do you see Greg Monroe becoming? Any comparisons?

David Thorpe
  (3:23 PM)

I have doubts about his head and his heart, like a lot of people do. Very talented and natural player. Not sure about comparisons yet.

biff (seattle)

Sir, you've touted SVG often as a great coach, if not the best in the league. How is it that he does not seem to have his team prepared for this series? Is it simply that the team is playing that badly, or is Doc outcoaching him?

David Thorpe
  (3:25 PM)

Other than two stretches in game one, the first mostly coming from a long layoff, this has been an extremely even series. Both teams are very good. But Boston is playing with a core that has done a lot together. Orlando changed 2/5ths of their team from last year. That, to my eyes, is the difference.

Gregory (West Palm Beach, FL)

Is there any chance Washington would choose Evan Turner at number one since they already have Gilbert Arenas at point guard?

David Thorpe
  (3:25 PM)

None.

Shahan (Boston)

Coach - how about Arenas to the Spurs for RJ? Spurs get the shooter they desperately need and the Wiz get the cap space in 2011. Arenas + Splitter puts the Spurs right back into contention..

David Thorpe
  (3:26 PM)

Great for Wiz. Way too pricey for the Spurs.

Trevor (DC)

Should the Wizards make a max offer to local product Rudy Gay?

David Thorpe
  (3:26 PM)

I don't think so.

Mike (Chicago)

In his prime could Pippen contain Lebron?

David Thorpe
  (3:27 PM)

No. But he'd give him lots of trouble frequently.

jy (ny)

Payton,Ray Allen, Bron, Malone & shaq...killer squad

David Thorpe
  (3:28 PM)

Fantastic!! Shooters, defenders, and bigs that crush people inside. Also, nice pick and pop options. Very well done.

Chris Baker (England)

Nash, J-Rich, LeBron, Amare, Lopez.

David Thorpe
  (3:28 PM)

Chris Baker is a FUNNY GUY (said in Costanza voice).

JK (Chicago)

Thorpedo, Love your stuff. Was curious as to why all season you dismissed the possibility of LeBron coming to the Bulls as a virtual non possibility. Was curious what you were basing this on?

David Thorpe
  (3:29 PM)

Not dismissing it. I just don't think it happens. I can't tell you why I feel that way.

Mrs. Seinfeld (Myrtle Beach)

What is Mike thinking? How could anyone not like you?

Krana (PR)

PG: Magic SG: LeBron SF: Bird PF: Garnett C: DuncanWe got high basketball IQ in all positions, we got speed in various areas. We got great passers in all positions, and we got great defenders in the 4 and 5.Come on, this is easily the best 5

David Thorpe
  (3:31 PM)

Very solid, special even.

Jimmy (Fort Wayne)

The East is weak and the bottom seeds are usually wide open. Any chance Washington sneaks into the playoffs next season?

David Thorpe
  (3:31 PM)

Probably not. And hey, how about the East getting the top 3 picks?! Might this bring them back a bit?

Mitch (NJ)

Thorpe- please take a Nets question...how much did last nights lottery loss set the franchise back?

David Thorpe
  (3:32 PM)

Possibly a bit, to be sure. But they can still get a great player.

Jamey (Los Angeles)

I'm a HUGE Orlando fan.. please Thorpedo tell me we still have a chance?.. especially if we steal the next 2 in Boston (they're notoriously bad at home)

David Thorpe
  (3:34 PM)

I know you are kidding. Yes, they have a chance, but it's quite small. If Howard plays game 3, they can win. Then at least it will be a series. But Boston would have to fall quite a bit from their current level to lose 4 of 5.

Dan (Atlantic City)

What kind of potential does Evan Turner have? Perennial All-Star or franchise player talent?

David Thorpe
  (3:34 PM)

He's got all-star talent.

SAGAR (TIKRIT, IRAQ)

Why do you not answer questions from foreigners? Do you live in Arizona, U.S.A.?

David Thorpe
  (3:35 PM)

You have to be kidding me.

Danny Light ((philadelphia,PA))

Should the Sixers draft Evan Turner or go draft Johnson,or favors, or cousins?

David Thorpe
  (3:36 PM)

The concern I have for drafting Turner is that Iggy's best 3 pt season was 33%(he did this twice I think). Holiday is a terrific shooter, but I don't like my 2's and 3's to be non-shooters. So Turner has to be evaluated closely on this.

Jonny (Sacramento)

Is there a chance Demarcus Cousins slips to the kings at Number 5?

David Thorpe
  (3:37 PM)

Yes. But if he does, I don't think they'd draft him either. Red flags would be the reason he's slipped in the first place.

arash (anaheim Hills, ca)

Best trash talker in today's game? and best up and comer trash talker?

David Thorpe
  (3:38 PM)

KG today. Not sure about tomorrow.

Dan (DC)

With the Wizards getting John Wall would they be able to draw a big name Free agent and if so who?

David Thorpe
  (3:38 PM)

I doubt it. Free agent studs care little for unproven rooks.

Bob (Orange County)

As a former Bruin, can Jrue Holliday be more consistent, and possibly become an All-Star or at least some type of defensive accolade?

David Thorpe
  (3:39 PM)

He absolutely has all-star potential. They love him in Philly.

Brad (Charlotte, NC)

Where do you see Ed Davis going

David Thorpe
  (3:40 PM)

Lower than he is currently projected.

Jordan (Houston)

Is Houston a Big enough market to draw in Bosh?

David Thorpe
  (3:40 PM)

4th largest tv market, I think.

Dan (bos)

If Rondo hadn't already signed his extension this season, would he be a max player come this offseason?

David Thorpe
  (3:40 PM)

Great question. Possibly. He's unreal.

Chris (NB)

Golden Child, just cuz no ones said it yet. Suns will be tough at home, but I think the lakers can take one there, you still have it going 7?

David Thorpe
  (3:41 PM)

Yes.

Tanvi (N. Chicago)

I hear Jay Bilas say "MOTOR" about prospects alot. What 3 players have the best "MOTOR" in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (3:42 PM)

Noah. Gerald Wallace perhaps. I'll think of a few others.

Matt (Irvine)

Hi Coach,The Magic are missing Hedo, especially in the playoffs. He can drive, dish out, lob, hit a clutch shot. And, yeah, hit his free throws as well. Your thougts.

David Thorpe
  (3:43 PM)

Agreed. They outsmarted themselves probably.

Mike (AZ)

Where do you see Darrington Hobson being drafted?

David Thorpe
  (3:43 PM)

Early to mid 2nd.

Ron (Maryland)

Do you see any way the Wizards trade the 1st pick?

David Thorpe
  (3:44 PM)

In past years? Possibly, that seemed to be the going thing for Grunfeld. But not this year.

Ryan (Michigan)

What are your thoughts on Colin Cowherd having the fortune teller on the show saying that Lebron is going to the Wiz?

David Thorpe
  (3:45 PM)

I did not know that, but it sounds cool. Ask yourself this-If you could predict the future, would you tell anyone?

Damon (Santa Cruz, CA)

Coach Thorpe, Jerry West is driving left in the NBA's logo, so yes I think he could handle going left.

David Thorpe
  (3:46 PM)

I disagree. Look at the logo again.

mike (nyc)

motor = varejao

David Thorpe
  (3:46 PM)

Absolutely right.

Jimmy (ECHS in Seattle)

do you see kevin durant getting a max contract in OKC? Or does he explore other opportunities? I just don't see why they wouldn't do all they can to retain K-Dur

David Thorpe
  (3:47 PM)

Maxed out in OKC.

Scott (Santa Barbara, CA)

Is Al-Farouq Aminu going to be there when the Clippers pick at 8 and is he ready to start along side Baron, Gordon, Griffin, and Kaman? They don't need scoring out of him, they just need a defender who can be a pain in the butt.

David Thorpe
  (3:47 PM)

He might be. I like him there.

Xander (Philly)

If I could predict the future i'd spend 5 hours a day at a casino or a race track for a couple years and make more money than Biff did in Back to the Future II

David Thorpe
  (3:48 PM)

Or maybe you'd buy Google at their IPO, ditto Apple and Microsoft and countless others.

Jesse Haynie (Roanoke, VA)

Does Wall-to-Wiz mean Arenas moves to 2-guard?

David Thorpe
  (3:48 PM)

Yes, unless they can find a home for him somewhere else.

Marcos (Newark, NJ)

Hey Thorpe what do you think of the nets owner saying he will win a championship in 5 years at most? Bold or Dumb?

David Thorpe
  (3:49 PM)

Love it. Game on!!

Mat (NYC)

Can you quit ESPN for 1 day, just so we can find out your Ewing story?

David Thorpe
  (3:51 PM)

He handled a meeting with a draft prospect extremely poorly years ago. That's all I have to say about that. It seems like he's grown up a lot since then.

John (Miami)

People say that LeBron + Rose Noah Deng would be the best setup for LeBron to win. But I feel like pairing LeBron and Wade would be far more dangerous. They would be unstoppable...best pairing of offensive players ever IMO. And not too shabby on the defensive end, either.

David Thorpe
  (3:51 PM)

Agreed.

Patrick Wall (Lake Park, FL)

Can Avery Bradley or Eliott Williams have an immediate impact?

David Thorpe
  (3:52 PM)

Could they get into a rotation? Sure. Will they be even average players in year one? Doubtful but possible.

erics (Seattle, Wa)

Who can Presti find to fill the Thunder's need for a low post defensive center that can play with their back to the basket? (draft/trade/free agent)

David Thorpe
  (3:54 PM)

I've spent some time with Alabi from FSU. He's the shot blocker they need, but is more of a pick and pop guy right now. Really shoots it, but not likely to be a low post guy.

Joe ((Philadelphia) )

Who will be the best player from this draft class in five years

David Thorpe
  (3:55 PM)

Wall.

Justin (West Lafayette)

Are shooters born or taught?

David Thorpe
  (3:57 PM)

Both. Kevin Martin is here now, and after 80 minutes of exhausting full court ball handling drills, he nailed 30 straight college 3's then 80% of his NBA three's (finishing 10 of 11 in his last set). He could always throw the ball in, but he had great form (for him) on every shot.

Ben (Austin, TX)

If Lakers AND Celtics both reach the finals - can we officially put to rest the "you can't just turn it on" theory for talented teams?

David Thorpe
  (3:58 PM)

Excellent point. The better axiom is "you can't expect to just turn it on". Because it does not always happen.

Dror (Israel)

What more does Ray Allen have to do in order to be considered the greatest pure shooter ever?

David Thorpe
  (3:58 PM)

He's in the running. Not sure he can get to the top.

David Thorpe
  (3:59 PM)

Time to run. Thanks everyone for 1900 questions. Have a great rest of the week. Be safe.
