Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:01 PM)

Greetings from Chicago, puck heads. Let's roll !

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup Championns?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:03 PM)

Les Blackhawks de Chicago

Daniel Briere (Philadelphia, PA)

Bonjour Pierre, is my contract worth it now? Those sweet fist pumps ain't cheap! Also I hear Brian Campbell is wondering the same thing.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:03 PM)

Danny, you've always been one of my favs buddy !

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, can you continue your education of us Americans regarding Canadian rooting patterns from last week? Specifically, who do the former Nordiques fans in Quebec root for now....the Canadiens, the Avalanche, or whoever is playing AGAINST the Canadiens?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:04 PM)

Nords fans have largely split up into factions over the years:1. anybody but Habs2. Habs3. Avs4. Senators

Joe P. (Bangkok, Thailand)

If the Blackhawks play their best hockey, do you think either of the East teams can realistically compete with them?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:04 PM)

Nope. Thanks for joining in from Thailand !

Jack (C-Ville)

Who is possibly going to take a chance on Jagr?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:05 PM)

Sounds to me like he's staying in Russia

Joe (Rochester)

What do you think tyler myers career is going to be like in the NHL, how do you expect ryan miller to do next year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:06 PM)

Tyler Myers will challenge Drew Doughty for the Norris for the next 15 yearsMiller will be fine

Alexander Ovechkin (Germany)

Pierre, your Stanley Cup and Olympics not important. Mother RRRRRRRRRRRussia just beat Canada in World Championship! Russia so very good. Canada so very very bad, they should learn hockey better.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:07 PM)

LOL...Canada beats Russia in the Olympics quartersRussia beats Canada in the worlds quarstersWhich one matters ? LOL

Bill (Washington, DC)

Pierre, out of the 4 remaining teams, which potential Finals matchup is NBC hoping for? Strong Cup Finals TV ratings would cap off a terrific season for hockey from a television sense.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:07 PM)

Flyers-Hawks is what U.S. TV wants

Kevin Canty (Chicago)

Well we saw a team come back 3-0 once this year. But tell me honestly. IF CHicago does win tonight is there any chance San Jose is coming back down 3-0???

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:08 PM)

zero chance

Michael (Chicago)

Pierre, what do you think of the Hawks staying at a hotel at home? Good idea? And how often does this happen in the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:09 PM)

It's happened fairly often over the years. Coaches want their players to get into game routine and not be distracted by wives/kids... I like that the Hawks are doing it, clearly being 3-3 so far at home in the playoffs hasn't worked the other way

Luke (PA)

Both Rob Rossi of the Tribune Review and John Grigg of The Hockey News have written articles suggesting the Penguins trade Malkin. I just don't understand it. Sure he had a down year, but he won the Art Ross and Conn Smythe less than a yearago. The Penguins wouldn't seriously consider tradingMalkin would they? If they did get rid of one of theirbig 3, I feel it would have to be Staal.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:10 PM)

Believe me _ there is ZERO chance the Pens trade Malkin

Ryan (Indy)

Could the state of Indiana ever get an NHL team?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:11 PM)

no

Jason (Chicago)

Pierre we will have the seventh different Stanley Cup Champion in seven years and there has not been a back to back Stanley Cup Champion since the Red Wings in 1998. Do you think we will see a back to back champion again in the new salary cap era and if so will it happen in the next decade and which teams have the best shot at repeating?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:11 PM)

If any team has a shot it's Chicago, that's for sure

Steven (Chicago)

I'm marking gameday by Byfuglienizing every name I come across. So, here's to you Pierre LyeuBrfuglyn (pronunciation, of course, LeBrun).

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:12 PM)

nice !

Tom (Philly)

Pierre do you see the Flyers giving big bucks to Leighton next year or will another team jump in the mix for him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:13 PM)

They'll try to keep him

Daniel Kanter (Skokie)

What are the chances of a hawks-habs finals, and who do you think will come on top?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:13 PM)

Would be great to have two Original Six teams in the Cup finals, let's be honest here. Would be first time since 1979 (Habs-Rangers).Hawks would win

Dan (Milwaukee)

If you were starting a team from scratch right now, who would be your first three choices (in order)?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:15 PM)

1. Sidney Crosby2. Alex Ovechkin3. Jonathan Toewsmight as well keep going :)4. Drew Doughty5. Shea Weber6. Duncan Keith

Corey (Brookfield, IL)

Moving Sharp back to 2nd line C, and Bolland and Maddon down to 3rd & 4th line C's has the Hawks playing their best hockey since Nov/Dec. Best move of the playoffs by any coach?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:16 PM)

Yup, pretty good move.Habs recalling PK Subban from AHL wasn't too bad either :)

Kevin (Philla)

Is Leino only on a 1 year deal w/ the Flyers after the waiver pickup?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:17 PM)

Leino (great move by Holmgren) has one more year on his deal paying him $825,000 (cap hit is $800,000)Cheap !

chris (georgia)

Pierre: Boston sends Thomas and Wheeler to Oilers for !st overall pick and Souray, who says no first

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:21 PM)

I think it's the other way around, Oilers would love to trade the farm to Boston for its second overall pick and then have both 1-2 picks

tad (west loop)

bonjour pierre, with the signing of backstrom long-term, do you think the caps will shed that albatross known as semin? and perhaps dump green this summer for a more veteran d?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:22 PM)

Certainly Semin is a trade possiblity, no question. But don't forget Theodore ($4.5 million) is coming off the books June 30

Corey (Brookfield)

Mother Hubbards or ESPN Zone last night?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:23 PM)

Haha, neither... Brought some media colleagues to a homestyle Italian restaurant in the burbs that was recommended by an NHL GM. And it was awesome. The name of the place is Tufanos, make sure to check it out.

Joe (Philly)

What do you expect for game 4? I don't expect the habs to come out flying around and I don't expect the Flyers to skate in mud and turn the puck over. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:25 PM)

I expect OT, and the winning goal wins the series in my mind

Vince Oppedisano (Norridge, IL)

Best playoff beard out of the remaining 4 teams?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:26 PM)

Well I'm with Western teams so don't see the East guys too much. I'll go with Dan Boyle and Andrew Ladd

Corey (Brookfield)

If the Hawks bury Huet in the minors next year - how much money will they need to rid themselves of this off-season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:27 PM)

One GM from another team figured the Hawks needed to shed between $7 million to $9 million this summer... Huet is $5.625 million so that would really help, and leave just another other player to dump

Eric (Chicago)

Pierre, really the NHL wants Flyers/Hawks? Yeah great whatever and all and nobody in Philly really cares about hockey, but I'm thinking an Original 6 Finals would be of greater importance and would love to see the Canadiens/Blackhawks for the Cup!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:30 PM)

As would I :)

Hockeydood (San Jose, CA)

First Pierre, I wanted to personally thank you and commend you on your article on the fans of San Jose. We die hards rarely get noticed out here on the left coast. Now, do the Sharks have a chance if they start throwing their weight around more against the Hawks? And does Wilson "blow up" the team in the off season if we lose to the Hawks? Thanks!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:31 PM)

You're welcome, San Jose is a terrific hockey market and I felt strongly that piece needed to be written.Sharks still have a chance for sure... They need to find the A game they had vs. Detroit, that A game hasn't showed up yet

Mike (NJ)

I don't see how everyone thinks Chicago is so superior to the East. I think the Flyers have a shot with the depth they have. Carter, Richards, Bierre, Gagne, Grioux, JVR.... the list goes on and on. THoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:32 PM)

Well, Stockholm Syndrome I guess. I've covered nothing but Western Conference hockey for three rounds so I don't see anybody from the East having a chance :)

Justin (Toronto)

We all know about the top few guys. But, beyond them, what kind of draft we looking at this year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

Justin, check out the least by our draft expert Gare Joyce, he's all over it.

alex (flA)

What do you think the Wild have to do to get back into the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

In need of serious offensive upgrade

Mike (Philly)

ever see a team come out as dead as the Flyers in a eastern conference finals series?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

San Jose in Detroit last round for Game 4? Chicago in Game 1 vs. Vancouver?

Jason (Portland, OR)

Pierre, is the type of deal a still very young Backstrom got from Washington going to become the new norm for teams with franchise players? In other words, can guys like Stamkos, Tavares, Duchene, etc. expect to sign sizeable, decade-long contracts when their entry level deals expire?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:35 PM)

The Backstrom deal was hardly the first of its kinds for young star players _ think Mike Richards, Rick Nash, etc.. But yeah, if and when Doughty for example signs his extension, it'll be a long, long one

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:36 PM)

Listening to a mix of Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Travelling Wilburys, Bruce Springstreen and Neil Young right now. Rock on

John (Milwaukee)

The NBA is horribly boring... can we trade in the Bucks for an NHL franchise?? Please save us!!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:37 PM)

I agree !!!

Scott (NYC)

Canada prob would have won again if the Prongers & Toews of the world weren't busy trying to WIN A CUP!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

hahaa, right, and Mike Richards, and Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith, and Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle !!!!

Jason (Portland, OR)

Pierre, with the Coyotes in Phoenix at least one more year but still potentially Winnipeg-bound, do you see any other NHL teams that may eventually move? Could the league expand to 32 teams? And, speaking just for myself, any chance Portland becomes an NHL city?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

I think Nashville is a candidate

John (Chicago)

What do you think of Niklas Hjalmarsson? Keith and Seabrook get all the hype, but in 2 years Hjalmarsson might be the best of the 3 in my opinion. Seems like he's kind of a hybrid of Keith and Seabrook.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:39 PM)

You mean the man his teammates call ''Jelly" ?Yeah he's vastly underrated. Real good defenseman. Great puck-mover, cerebral player.

Erik (SW Philly)

I feel that wrecking the car of the Montreal writer while in Philly will be fate that we lose this series. Talk me off the ledge please...

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:41 PM)

The Flyers are such a great franchise, but when a small minority of their fans act like this, it just boggles the mind. I mean, I heard a story from colleages covering the East finals that two Flyers fans after Game 1 yelled at two French-Canadian media guys, ''Go Home you stupid French-Canadians." One Flyer fan had a Simon Gagne jersey, the other Daniel Briere _ to point out the obvious, both those player are French-Canadians.Having said that, Habs fans have their foibles as well. Rioting after playoff games is stupid, as is booing the U.S. anthem

Jack (Chicago)

Pierre, Do you think this is the blackhawks best chance to win the cup probably within the next few years with their current depth and salary cap demands for next season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:41 PM)

No question. Absolutely no question

Rich (Chicago)

Pierre, nobody is going to take on Huet's contract so is it a crazy idea to bring Crawford up next year to back up Niemi and send Huet down to Rockford (AHL) to free up cap space?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:42 PM)

It's not crazy, it's a question of whether Rocky Wirtz is willing to swallow that pill

Jason (Portland)

Pierre, Chicago's rebuild appears to be coming to full fruition, so much so that I suspect a lot of teams are aiming to be the "next Blackhawks". What teams do you having that same kind of young core that could become serious contenders over the next 2 seasons?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:42 PM)

LOS ANGELES KINGS

Sean (Chicago)

Pierre - What are the chances that Captain Serious eventually puts himself in MVP discussion? He out played Crosby at the olympics and has been the best player in the playoffs so far, is the only problem that he may not score enough? (over pt/gm)

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:43 PM)

Great question.Honestly after covering Toews at the Olympics and parts of three playoff rounds here, I believe we have to start throwing Toews' name in there with Sid and Alex as top three players in the world

Dave (Virginia)

Given his play, it would appear to be obvious that the Habs will keep Halak and dump Price...What future does Price have in the league and who will be looking to pick him up?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:44 PM)

You see, if I was Pierre Gauther instead of being Pierre LeBrun (haha), I would keep both goalies for at least another year. But that's just me. Price has tons of upside still. Why dump him now?

Rich (The Bronx)

Any chance my Rangers can swing a deal for Kane and/or Toews if the Hawks win the cup? They'll have to reduce cap space, and I'm sure Glen can come up with a decent offer

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:45 PM)

ZERO

Rich (Chicago)

I hear a lot of comparisons between Toews and Trottier. However, Kane has abilities that I can't compare to anyone off the top of my head. Who would you compare him to?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:46 PM)

Kane _ Jagr (with mullet included)Toews _ Yzerman or Sakic (both serious big-time stars and leaders)

Ryan (Indy)

If the sharks shakeup their lines, will Bolland follow Thornton because of the success he's had so far

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:46 PM)

yes that would be my guess

Matt (Springfiel, Il)

There has been a lot of negative talk about Marian Hossa not scoring. Do you think that his offensive and defensive game play is not enough? He pretty much does everything but score right now, he dominates with the puck.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

He's been terrific in all other areas of the game, defensive zone, forecheck, smart puck control, etc... BUT _ when you pay a guy $7.9 million, you're not looking for a glorified John Madden. You're looking for a guy that will challenge Toews and Kane for offensive production.Them's just the facts

Corey (Brookfield, IL)

Can't argue with your 1-6 list - would you have Stamkos in the top 10?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

Yup

Eric (Chicago)

Uno's, Ditka's or Harry Caray's?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

I've done Harry's a few times already this spring. Haven't the done the other two yet :)

Geoff (Montreal)

How will Leighton's sub-par performance affect him in game 4?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:49 PM)

No clue, but the answer to that question will have a huge bearing on this series

Andy (Chicago)

Pierre, it seems like u and Joe Thornton are pretty friendly. what are your thoughts on his slash to Bollands wrists? Was Joe telling the truth that he wasn't frustrated at all?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:49 PM)

Nate (Minneapolis)

Had poutine for the first time the other night...I'm hooked and go Hawks!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:50 PM)

I am SO, SO PROUD of you Nate.Americans everywhere, try Quebec's finest import ever, POUTINE !!!Mmmmmm

Robby (Sacramento)

If your Sharks GM Doug Wilson, who do you focus most of your attention on resigning this offseason...Nabby, Pavs, or Marleau?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:50 PM)

1. Pavs2. Nabby3. Marleau

Andy (Old Town)

Pierre, Tufanos is hardly in the suburbs. Its like 15 minutes from the stadium

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:51 PM)

LOL, ok, busted on that one. I have no idea where I am at any point in this town :)

Steven (Chicago)

What burb? Isn't Tufano's right by UIC near Harrison and Racine? aka Vernon Park Tap? If we're talking about the same place, Tufano's was always my family's pre-Hawks/Bulls dining of choice on the way to Chicago Stadium. Good call by your GM friend.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:52 PM)

yup. that's the place

Mike (Kalamazoo)

Does Lidstrom retire? if not, what do you think his contract will be?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:52 PM)

I predict he comes back, for a bit less

Todd (Pittsburgh PA)

Pierre, aside from a little rest, what should be the Pens' biggest priority to get in the offseason? GO HABS (for now)

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:53 PM)

re-signing Gonch

Jeff (San Jose, CA)

If the Sharks get swept vs. Chicago do you think Doug Wilson keeps his job?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:53 PM)

I can't see why not. Getting to the final four and losing to the best team in hockey is hardly a firing offense

Eric (Thunder Bay ON)

Hey Pierre...As a die hard pens fan i took that game 7 loss very hard...do you see sid and the boys back in the finals next year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:55 PM)

Caps and Pens will both be heavy favorites from the East, along with Philly

Jason (Chicago)

We must be treating you well Pierre. Not oly do you like the Blackhawks this year you already have them repeating!!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:56 PM)

LOL, love this town

Andy (Old Town)

Are you and Drew Doughty officially an item yet?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:57 PM)

LOL, yes, my hetero man crush on Drew is for real :)

John (Chicago)

Hawks vs Canadiens would be a matchup of the best two "sweaters" in the NHL, right? Also, why do players choose numbers like 76, 75, 61, etc.? They hurt my eyes and look horrible.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:57 PM)

Because Habs have retired the most uniform numbers in the NHL...

Ryan (Rochester)

Which city left has the best eats?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:00 PM)

Chicago and Montreal both favorite road towns for sportswriters. And on that note kids, I need to get ready for Game 3 tonight !Talk next week
