Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. The new big notebook is up, the schedule and rankings are updated and there are four new blogs from this week, so check it out and let's get to it.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Good to see Zab fighting on FNF in July. Good pickup by the network!

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I agree. Like I wrote in my blog yesterday, things are always more interesting when Zab is fighting.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, a friend and I got tix to see the Cotto - Foreman fight at Yankee Stadium next weekend. I'm curious what the contingency plan is if it pours out and they're unable to hold the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

If it rains the fight will go on as the ring will be covered. And you will get wet.

Courtney Jackson (Lindenwold, NJ)

hi dan, who do you think is going to win the fight between Klitschko and Sosnowski? I think this is going to be a boring fight just like the heavyweight division is boring as well.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I think Vitali crushes him.

manuel (san jose ca)

hey dan, do you think that cotto-margarito II will ever happen? and Whats next for sergio martinez? i would love to see him fight margarito in a rematch later this year if manny-floyd happens, and if cotto doesnt want to fight him

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I can see it happening maybe someday but there are lots of bridges to cross. Margarito has to get a license in the US. Cotto has to want to fight him, etc... Sergio's schedule is up in the air but he may be stripped today of one of his middleweight belts by the WBO because they want him to decide which division he is going to fight in. Typical sanctioning organization crap.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Pres.)

The WBC is Stripping you of your unified super duper regular intergalactic undisputed silver interim diamond champion emeritus in recess twice removed title for not surrendering 4% of your salary!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

It is an honor.

Harry J (Houston Tx)

"unified super duper regular intergalactic undisputed silver interim diamond champion emeritus in recess twice removed" Did you pay your fees for that title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

No. And I never will.

Dan (CA)

So what other legal challenges are happening in Rigondeaux's case, and what promoters has Hyde talked to?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Hyde has talked to Top Rank, which is interested in signing Rigondeaux. This thing could get ugly.

Billy (Pittsburgh, PA)

Dan, have you ever seen more fighters reluctant to fight for a title than the guys avoiding the Klitschkos? Valuev, Haye and Povetkin have all bypassed title fights in hopes of facing less dangerous opponents.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I wouldn't say Valuev has avoided them at all. The promoters are involved. Valuev would fight either brother I am sure. Haye has ducked. We know that. Povetkin's people are not thrilled with the idea of fighting Wlad right now but may not have a choice if they want to retain their mandatory status. The fact is Povetkin is not ready for that kind of opponent yet. His promtoers know it, Teddy Atlas knows, everyone knows it. But there is a ton of money to be made.

Keiran (Syracuse)

Dan Corleone, thank you for making it clear that the Mares/Perez fight was not a robbery and a perfectly fine draw in your blog. Obviously a lot of people didn't score that fight and don't know what the definition of a robbery is, b/c that sure as hell wasn't one. Martinez v. Cintron, now that was a ROBBERY!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Exactly.

Mike (Norristown, PA)

Dan, if you see someone throwing a fight, particularly a big one, would you report on it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

If I had evidence of it? Of course.

Juan (PR)

If you lose your ability to type fast, multitask and take calls on the Bat Phone, will you go the "European route"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Probably not because I do not have dual citizenship anywhere. And I don't like to fly.

Mr. Stone (Elk Grove, CA)

I would assume since we have not heard a lot of talk about Pacquiao-Mayweather, that is a good thing. Have you heard any updated info about that potential fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I am not at liberty to say.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Hey Dan. Is Johnreil Casimero fighting on the June 12 card in NYC. I hope so, because nothing would be more ridiculous than the WBO Junior Flyweight Title and the WBO INTERIM Junior Flyweight title being at stake in fights that are on the same card. It is quite possible that if this happens, the universe will explode.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

The Casimero fight is off the show. His fight will go on a different Top Rank Live card. Putting the two fights together on the same card was too expensive for Top Rank, which I understand. What I don't get is why announce the fight when you knew ahead of time what it would cost? Just a case of bait and switch to me.

Eric (DC)

Do you think there's anybody in the world that's more terrified about going to work tomorrow than this poor SOB that's fighting Vitali? I hope he's getting paid well. And has good heath insurance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Well said.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, whats your take on Main Events Promotions not waiting for HBO or television dates to set up their fights. This has been mentioned with Adamek and Zab.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I give them a lot of credit. They have their plan, they're sticking it to it and nobody is going to boss them around. If HBO or any network wants one of their fights, great. If not, they will do their own thing and make it work.

Charles (DFW)

I'm assuming Paulie Malignaggi won't be fighting many world class opponents in Italy (other than Matthew Hatton, if he gets that far).

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

He'll go over and test the waters. They'll match him with European level guys and see what he can do.

posy (rochester)

have you heard anything about calzaghe coming back to fight? possible against bute? if so, who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

There has been a lot of talk about Joe coming out of retirement, but if he does the only fight I have heard discussed with a rematch with Hopkins. Richard Schaefer is supposed to go to the UK next week and one of the things on his agenda is to meet with Joe to talk about what he may want to do.

jose (miami,fl)

any news in gamboa next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

July 24 is the HBO date but they have no opponent. Caballero isn't going to happen -- Gamboa team just doesn't want the fight. Gamboa may fight Elio Rojas.

Charles (DFW)

Is there any way to salvage the Morel fight on Latin Fury 15? The card is still several weeks away. Should be enough time to find a legit challenger.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

No, Morel fight is off now that Arce is out.

Raymond (Philadelphia)

Dan, can you tell the higher ups at ESPN that the NBA is NOT the only sport going on right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Tell me about it.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Anything on the horizon for the latin snake? He looked great in his last fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Golden Boy offered him a spot on the July 31 PPV undercard but he isn't interested at this point.

Chris James (Humble Tx)

Have you had a chance to conversate with Juan Diaz, and if so, do he seem like he still has that desire and passion he had before his first fight with marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Yes. I spent some time talking with Juan when I was in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. He most definitely is still passionate about fighting and seemed very amped up for the rematch.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

What are your thoughts on people saying that Tim Bradley is ducking Devon Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

They're freakin' idiots. It's simply not true.

Horn (Vegas)

Is Mr. Haye running around these days with a chicken on his shirt?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

If not, he should be.

OB (Pitt)

Gonzalo Mungia? You said it was bad at 130, DTM, but that's downright pitiful.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

I know Haye is a decent trash talker but Vitali just made him look silly. What more can they say? Anywhere, anytime, either brother. Good luck with that Mr. Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

The Klitschkos will fight Haye in a second but it takes two to tango. Wladimir called him a bitch. Vitali said he would end his career. Haye needs to shut up or man up.

Lewis (Carlsbad, CA)

Dan, when was the last time you took Mrs. DTM to a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I think it might have been when I went to Puerto Rico a few years ago.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Vitali was really bringing at Haye. I loved it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Me too.

Kevin (Greensboro, NC)

Dan, I enjoyed listening to you on ESPN radio Baltimore last week. You may have mentioned this before, but are you a regular guest on that show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Not so much a regular but I have been on with Scott and Scottie many, many times. Always enjoy being on their show.

Sean McGrath (Boston, MA)

"I am not at liberty to say" what the heck?!? that's not gonna slip pass us, are you holding out on the freaks??

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Yes, I am.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

We have news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The weighs are in from Germany. Vitali Klitschko 247 lbs / 112.0 kilograms and Albert Sosnowski 224 lbs / 101.8 kilograms.

Gene (Denver)

Loved the WBC blog this week. Man you really laid into them this time, deservedly so. What do you think needs to happen for these organizations to go away? It seems like fighters are starting to do their part in saying take your fees and belts and shove em!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Fighters, promoters have to stop doing business with them (good luck). TV networks could refuse to do their fights, but they have no backbone to stand up like that.

Joey (Wyoming)

Is Pacquaio fighting in Dallas in November a done deal or is there still a chance he would go to MGM for a Mayweather fight if it could be negotiated.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Pacquiao's next fight could be in either place. It is not any kind of done deal that he will fight in Dallas.

Rick (Marina)

Any news of Casmayor vs Ghost Guererro undercard for the Baby Bull-Marquez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

It is unlikely to happen. Casamayor side is balking.

Mike (NYC)

Dan for real how are you gonna have Maidana ranked below Khan at JW? Just b/c Khan beat decent but not great Malignaggi that doesn't constitute as that great of a win.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Who has Maidana beaten? Life and death win with Ortiz? He lost to Kotelnik who was shut out by Khan. And Khan has easy wins over Kotelnik AND Malignaggi, which to me, is a better resume than what Maidana has done.

Steve (NYC)

Why is David Tua even botehring to fight Monte Barrett?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

No idea. Utter waste of time. Maybe it goes two rounds.

Bryant (Pitt)

Worst president Suliman or Bush?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Which Bush?

James (Tx)

Some people in my circle have compared Chad Dawson to Roy Jones Jr. I am a RJJR fan, so i see some and then I see alot of misses in the comparison. If Chad were to dazzle like Roy did, do you think he would be a bigger draw?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Chad and Roy are nothing alike. Chad doesn't punch like that and isn't as fast or as dynamic.

Lenny (Chicago)

Dan, why do you suppose Pacquiao was reluctant to face Foreman?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Freddie said no to the fight because they felt that Foreman was too tall.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

What's Paul Williams' next move? Is he waiting out Pacquiao and Mayweather's decision to fight before committing to another fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I spoke with Paul's promoter, Dan Goossen, just before this chat began. He told me they are committed to Paul's next fight in the fall being at 147 pounds. He also indicated they would come to the East Coast for the fight. No date, opponent or exact site but that is the plan.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Dan...Please explain to me why Joe Calzaghe would come out of retirement for another Hopkins fight? Seriously? After seeing Benard's last fight with RJJ it may seem that his age is finally catching up to him. Coming out to fight the winner of the Super Six or Bute would make more sense. Do you have interest in seeing him fight Hopkins again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Joe is obviously bored in retirement, that's why. And the money is good. I have no interest in the rematch but it is what it is.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Any news on what's next for Agbeko? I like watching that dude fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I like watching him too but nothing for him at the moment since his eliminator was canceled.

Eric (Irving, TX)

Since, Jose just stripped you again, wouldn't that make you the unified super duper regular intergalactic undisputed silver interim diamond champion emeritus in recess 3x removed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, you know you can't be the WBC Master of the Universe of All That Is Crappy Champion until you can get "Ambassador of Peace" placed at the end of your name. You need to kiss the WBC's sorry rear end a little more.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I do need that title too. Shoot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Today's blog:http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5227492/notre-dame-grad-lee-ready-punch-pay

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

And yesterday's random thought:http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5225630/a-wba-super-duper-champion

Scott (New Brunswick)

Dan, in deference to the freaks, I?d love to see you host a regular radio segment where listeners can call in their questions instead of having to do it only through a weekly chat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I would love to do that.

Steve (NYC)

Dan why do so many heavies waste time with years of nothing fights- Briggs, Scott, Tua, Rodriguez, Rahman?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Paychecks for nothing fights.

Niki (NJ)

Dan, rate these sports in order of importance to you: Boxing, MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Boxing, MLB, NFL, NCAA hoops, NBA.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan any news for Katsidis after his win over Mitchell? Katsidis/Valero would have been a war.....

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Katsidis has been mentioned as a possible summer opponent for Khan, but it's only talk at the moment.

Matt (LA)

Paulie was very impressive against Diaz (2x) then looked slow against Khan. Do you think Khan was too fast or Paulie really did get old overnight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Probably a little bit of both.

Harry J (Houston Tx)

You and Jose Sulaiman 5 rounds for the new WBC Aluminum Belt, whats your prediction?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I'll kick the old man's butt.

Joseph (San Antonio, TX)

Dan, it's been awhile. Since Morel is off the card and Mike Alvarado is being added to Latin Fury 15, what type of an opponent is Top Rank looking for to put in with Mike? You heard anything?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

They are still looking for an opponent.

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

DTM?On this week?s blog you wrote ?On that note, this is my dream: To become a unified super duper regular intergalactic undisputed silver interim diamond champion emeritus in recess twice removed??.Still laughing at that one?.Classic quote King Freak!!

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Why is Paul Williams so eager to fight at 147 again? I mean it doesn't seem like Pacquiao and Mayweather would fight him and there are much more interesting fights at higher weight classes such as a Martinez rematch or a fight with Sergiy Dzinziruk

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I have no idea, but that's what they say they are going to do.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

I just hope no one tells Calzaghe that Holyfield is still wanting to fight.

t (nj)

Any news on Vivan Harris?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Nope.

NYPD Blue (nyc)

I'd just like to say that, in spite of all the whiny boxing fans complaining about Al Sosnowski, I'll be watching the fight because I love watching Vitali fight. I'd watch him fight a wood stove if need be. He hasn't got that many fights left, so I'm going to enjoy him while he's still around.

J (J-town)

OMG, did you really page Zsolt Erdei in your blog? WHY??? So he can fight stiffs for the next 5 years?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Hey, when he fights stiff it provides good fodder for me to rip on. Give a hard-working columnist a break please. We need all the material we can get.

Nicholas (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, can you explain something to me? Ward-Green is held in Oakland because of economics. Yet, Dirrell-Abraham was held in Detroit in front of a sparse crowd when the same fight would?ve drawn 20,000 in Germany. Sounds like a little home cooking to me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

For the millionth time I will explain and this is the final time: The contract calls for fights to be held in the home countries of the fighters. Abraham had a home country fight with Taylor. Dirrell fought Froch in England. His fight was in Detroit, which was part of his home country. It was up to the promoter as well as Showtime, which wants some of the bouts in the United States. The Dirrell fight in Detroit was moved to that date on very short notice because of Dirrell's injury. That they drew 5,000 there on short notice and considering it was not a title fight nor had he ever fought there before was actually a good turnout. It is not home cooking. Each man is entitled to home fights and by "home" I mean in their own country.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Dan...Nice blog on Mike Lee. Speaking of Notre Dame boxers. Have you ever seen Tom Zbikowski fight? He seems like a fringe NFL player at this stage and I was wondering if he's ever mentioned turning pro as a boxer at some point.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I saw Tommy Z's pro debut. That was his only pro fight. He's been an all-pro player in the NFL as far as I knew.

Robbie (Denton, Tx)

Any chance John Ruiz comes out of retirement and we can get to see the rematch we have all been waiting for with Kirk Johnson.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Somebody's looking to get banned.

Mike (Worcester, Ma)

Dan are you going to be in Worcester June 24th for the card headlined by Edwin Rodriguez, and the return of Kevin McBride?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Why would I travel for that?

Noel (England)

Dan, would you concede that it?s in your best interest as an American sportswriter to see Americans to do well in championship fights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Not at all. I don't care.

Jeff (Gilbert AZ)

Dan,I know the Klitchko Bros. are getting a little older but they could probably fight for another 10 years unless a legitimate challenger develops (maybe Seth Mitchell). I mean really why would they stop fighting? train hard, hang out with your crew, travel the world, beautiful women, packed euro arenas and 7 figure checks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I agree. Neither has shown any signs of slowing down. They are not tested in their fights over the past few years.

Horn (Vegas)

As a Duke fan, how sick would it be to watch a fight at Cameron Indoor surrounded by the crazies?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I would love it. And I would like to report that this past weekend, I bought myself a Duke 2010 national championship hat that is on display in my office.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

O/U for the Vitali fight: 4 rounds?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I think Sosnowski will hang in longer than that but take a beating.

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

"He's already passed his prime. Many of his fights have been against living punching bags who had already lost in the locker room." I dunno, I like Al Sosnowski's attitude. With thousands of his fellow Poles in attendance tommorow, I'm sure Al will do down, if he goes down, swinging. Which would make a nice contrast to the Kevin Johnson debacle.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Exactly. If Sosnowski at least tries to win, credit to him because Johnson didn't even try.

Owen (Utah)

We know that the Klitschkos won't fight each other, but have there ever been reports about them sparring against each other and how that went?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

They sparred with each other years ago. They told me about this one time. The sessions got too heated and they had to be separated and have never sparred again from they say.

Devale (Chicago)

Dan, buy or sell cold weather superbowl?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Sure why not.

Ankur (New Jersey)

What did you think of Peter Manfredo's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I didn't.

tom (hackensack)

PWill wants 147....Kermit stated he wanted a rematch at 147 in his "letter to the fans"........get the bat phone out. Pwill-cintron rematch at 147....with no TV equipment ringside...

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Not gonna happen.

Ankur (New Jersey)

Dan, there's a bunch of speculation going around that the Mayweather team is demanding a 60-40 split. I know you are not at liberty to say how valid that is, but, could you tell us your personal opinion on whether or not the fight should be 50-50?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

It should be 50-50. And if they can't agree on that, make it like 45-45 and give the winner the extra bump.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Congratulations on your new hat. That's really, really great news.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Thank you. I thought so too.

Jason (Canada)

Hey Dan, nice blog yesterday! I was wondering what you think of prospect David Lemieux? And when do you think he will start getting in the mix for a title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I like Lemiuex a lot and I am psyched that we will have him on FNF this summer. He's a few fights away from that level but he has a lot of talent, charisma, exciting style and a fan base.

Joe (San Diego, Ca)

Dan, I think Tua would destroy either Vitali or Wladimir. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I think you are on hard drugs or just dumb.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D$, I like the fights tonight on ESPN. I see Andrade running all over Lucas but should be good while it lasts. Props to ESPN for the pretty good scraps so far this year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I think it's a solid fight. The winner will put himself in a nice spot. And I agree -- overall FNF has had an excellent season so far.

Gordon (NYC)

Dan: Cotto - Foreman undercard, 1-10 (1 being complete garbage, 10 being excellent), what would you give it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

About a 5.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, do you planning on watching the Vitali fight live tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes.

joe (ny)

i think mayweather should just move up and fight klitchko....

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Don't you mean down to fight Calderon?

Joel (New York)

Hey, Dan why is Joan Guzman not ranked on your top 10 lightweights? I know he did not make weight his last fight, but the guy can fight there is no denying that. Can you exlplain??

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

He has no track record at 135 pounds and doesn't fight in that division. Pretty easy.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Boxing math: (The number of Ricky Hattons) - (The chances David Haye will fight either Klitschko) = 1

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Brilliant.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Marco Antonio Barrera with Top Rank, didn?t her sign with Don King?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

King gave him his release after they had some sort of dispute over money from the Khan fight.

Mitch (Oakland)

Dan, there's a rumor going around that you are 100% not going to give us information about Mayweather/Pac negotiations.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

You are 100% right.

Molly Sticket (International Assoc. of Feminine Products)

In honor of his many illustrious contributions to the sport of boxing, and the many new titles he has created out of thin air, we hereby recognize Jose Sulaiman as our International Super Duper D*****bag Champion.

Keiran (Syracuse)

D-Cash, I was watching Acelino Freitas v. Jorge Barrios last night, that fight was awesome. Barrios always makes good fights and always seems to be competitive, whats his deal now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Freitas-Barrios is one the best fights of the past 10 years. Very underrated. Just a great fight, drama, blood, action, you name it. Barrios has had injuries and legal problems.

karl (ny)

Prime George Foreman vs. prime Mike Tyson...who would you pick?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Prime Foreman would have knocked prime Tyson's face off. Woulda been like the Frazier fight.

David (Houston)

I actually read an article the other day that was all about how you have pacquiao number one pound for pound but number two in the welterweight division and how that makes no sense. Its so stupid to me how people cannot understand how that works. Idiots lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, idiots they are.

Roberto (Charlotte, NC)

If the Klitschkos decided they would fight each other.. Who do you think would win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I've always thought Vitali would win. Something about the mental aspect of big bro vs little bro.

Dave (San Jose)

Can you explain why anyone signs with Don King? Has he ever promoted a fighter that he didn't have a dispute over money with? Serious question.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I have no idea. He's a great salesman. Could sell ice to an Eskimo in the dead of winter.

Wes (Philly)

Another dumb Mayweather joke by Dan. But keep telling the world your not a hater.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

It's called a joke dopey.

Bryant (Pitt)

Stump the King......Who beat Mayweather in the 96 olympics?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

A Bulgarian fighter in the semifinals in a robbery -- dude's name was like Serafim Todorov.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

As bad an opponent as Sosnowski is, I bet he puts forth more of an honest effort than Kevin Johnson, a supposedly much better opponent, just put in...

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

That's all you can ask for.

tom (england)

Dan,I have an extra ticket to the US world cup opening match of england/USA...want to go?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I wouldn't go if you gave me money.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, have you ever spoken to Larry or Max about why HBO doesn't just recognize Ring rankings? Max was the biggest Ring booster when he was with ESPN.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

That decision comes a higher level than Max and Larry.

Gil (NYC)

Any news on Berto? Or is he hoping the Pac Mayweather falls threw ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I am told he is considering a move down to 140.

psycho (LaLaLand)

if Sulaiman and Mendoza were to have a baby together, i am believe he will immediately make sure that toddlers will be asked to pay sanctioning fees for Diaper Belts

Michael (Oakland)

I finally unified the the virtual middleweight and Light Heavy titles playing Fight Night Round 4 last night. Should I be expecting a letter from Sulaiman in the mail asking for a sanctioning fee?

Michael (Oaland)

Worst Olympic robbery? 1996 Mayweather or 1988 RJJ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

RJJ by far.

Bryant (Pitt)

Thanks for the answer I will have a better Stump the King question next week

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Bring it strong or don't bring it at all.

Keiran (Syracuse)

Who would you like in a Joan Guzman v. Tim Bradley fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I would not want to see that. I have no interest in seeing Guzman anymore. He is on my banned list.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan did I hear you right?????? Berto at 140 will my dream fight of Berto/Alexander fight actually happen?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Yes, you heard right. MAYBE next fight in the 143ish range on his way down. I think he sees Bradley going to welterweight for his next fight and would like to get into the mix of those kind of bouts. If he can go into the lower 140s, he could maybe fight one of the big names at a catchweight without them risking their title. Or maybe he could get all the way down to 140.

Brian (London)

Most everyone is saying Vazquez and Marquez are sure-fire hall of famers. Although I agree they are both HOFers, do you agree ,and if so, is this more because of their overall accomplishments or their epic rivalry?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I am not so sure they are surefire HOFers. Vazquez's resume is a bit thin. Marquez, in my mind, is more surefire as he has a longer resume and better resume. He was a dominant bantam champ before he beat Vazquez the first time for the jr feather title. He beat guys like Mark Johnson (twice) and Timmy Austin and solid contenders like Silence Mabuza, Pastranan (before he was totally shot) and others.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Daniel, please stop it already with the Floyd Mayweather jokes. He is a very serious man and he should not be treated with such blatant disregard. You just can't go around making jokes about a man who gets his hair cut while Fifty Cent rolls by on a Segway. That's not the kind of man you can make jokes about.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

LOL!

Demetrius Andrade (Rhode Island)

Dan, I hear you telling me a lot of things, a lot of great information about boxing news and whatnot, and I appreciate it. But you still haven't told me I'm the best.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Keep waiting.

GIL (NYC)

Berto at 140 !!! oh the possibilities

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Exactly. It would be sick.

Banishment (Hartford, CT)

Next Joan Guzman poster gets a 1 way ticket to me.

Felix (USA)

How can we talk about mundane matters like boxing when the great Gary Coleman is on life support? I just don't understand Americans ....

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Whatchyou talkin about?

Larry David (L.A.)

Can we officially say that Haye is ducking the Klitschkos?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

We have been able to say it since last summer when he ducked both of them.

Chris (LV)

I actually heard Floyd and Leonard like you ... heard it from someone who watched Pac Cotto in his house

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I like those guys too.

shawn (tempe)

Have you seen this yet? http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

Michael (Oakland)

What would be a worse scenario? BP trying to stop a gushing underwater oil well dumping 12 Million gallons of crude oil into a fragil eco-system? or Sid Brumbach in Israel Vazquez's corner?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

PAY THE MAN SHIRLEY!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

To the previous question -- that web site is pretty funny.

Brian (London)

Any chance we see Donaire in a meaningful fight by the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I sure hope so. It's time to you know what or get off the pot.

Keiran (Syracuse)

Danimator, I like my steak medium-rare and my burgers well done. How about you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

These are my readers.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

But since it is Memorial Day weekend, I guess it's legit question. I'm a medium well guy.

shawn (tempe)

so no TV for adamek/grant?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Main Events is working on it. It could be on the Internet, maybe a PPV, maybe a network. At the very least, you can count on a replay after the fact on a network like SNY or MSG or something in the New York area.

Devale (Chicago)

Dan, Who's the nicest boxer you've ever meet in your years covering the sport?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

The truth is most of the fighters are super nice guys. There are a few who are just jerks, but most of the top guys are pretty cool. Off the top of my head some of the nicer guys that come to mind are Mosley, Hatton, the Klitschko brothers, Oscar, Rahman, Tito, Berto, Eddie Chambers, Paulie Malignaggi, Juan Diaz, Glen Johnson, Andre Ward, Arreola, Sergio Martinez, Devon Alexander, Jorge Arce, Calderon, Angulo -- so many of them. Too many to name.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

What do you think of the idea of sport media/ writes ranking fighters similar to the way the NCAA does their polls and having the ranking that way?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

The problem is that most of the writers are not capable of doing it. There are some that obviously can, but too many have no idea about fighters outside of the top coulpe in each division.

Sean McGrath (Boston, MA)

Say what you want about Uncle Bob but the guy is still sharp as a whip at 80 years, using Mike Lee Alma Mater - Notre Dame to sell tickets. Arum always finds the angle.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

It's promoting 101 and Bob is maybe the best ever.

Gary (Richmond)

Dan, do you know where your seat will be for the Cotto-Foreman fight? Is the ring going to be at home plate or in left or right field?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

The ring will be in right field and the press section from what I understand is on the field one of the sides of the ring.

Jason (San Diego)

DTM, Your trapped in a 10 x 10 room with no way of escape until someone discovers that you've gone missing and locates where you are. Would you rather be trapped with James Toney or PBF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Damned if I do and damned if I don't.

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

Is it just me, or does Carl Froch seem to be having a nervous breakdown in public over the idea of fighting Arthur Abraham? Every day it's a new complaint or threat to quit fighting altogether.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I'm a little sick of it too.

Kevin (Denver)

Any thoughts on the IBF upheaval?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Not really. Let them fight it out. Who really cares?

Kevin (Denver)

So, no chance of Katsidis-Khan ??

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Who said no chance?

Randall (Austin)

DTM- Perliminary weather for next Saturday's outdoor fight calls for 87 degrees. Who do you think the warm weather favors?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I would think if it favored anyone maybe Cotto, who is from a hot climate in Puerto Rico and trains in Florida.

Gil (NYC)

"The problem is that most of the writers are not capable of doing it. There are some that obviously can, but too many have no idea about fighters outside of the top coulpe in each division." Dan talkin the talk Mayweather style !

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Just keeping it real.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, if HBO balks, any chance of ESPN picking up Adamek-Grant? Adamek?s fights are almost always exciting, draw large crowds, and were about the only memorable shows that Versus ever carried.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

ESPN is not picking up the fight. They spoke with Main Events about it but not happening. Main Events has certain television territories and rights it needs that go against what ESPN ever gives up to a promoter so they didn't make a deal. No hard feelings, just not working together on the fight.

Terry (Richmond, VA)

Dan, have you had a chance to interview either of the Klitschkos? Which one speaks better English?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I've interviewed both many times. They speak excellent English but overall, Wladimir is smoother and a bit better.

John (Utah)

This is a question my friends and I always have had for a while. When you lose your title, do you still get to keep the physical belt you won as a "trophy" forever? There isn't one actual belt being passed around, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes, you get to keep your belt as a trophy. A new one is made and sent to the new champion. On the night of a fight, usually if a new champion is crowned they basically borrow the other fighter's belt to pose with and take pictures with and then a few weeks later they get their own belt sent to them or sometimes they go to the organization headquarters and have a little press conference or ceremony to get their actual belt.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Whatever happened to Ricardo Torres?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Back in Colombia and done fighting. I actually spoke to Miguel Diaz this week. He was in Torres' corner and I asked him about Torres. He said he's retired.

Charles (DFW)

So did Shane Mosley give up his belt when he lost to Floyd, as he wanted? I noticed Senchenko was listed the regular WBA 147 champ and no mention of Mosley as super champ.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

The WBA stripped Shane, a move I actually can't argue with since he lost at the weight.

mike (jersey)

what's the deal with korobov? is he still an elite prospect? last couple times i've seen him, it looks like he's been bored and not going for the KO

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

As I wrote last week, he has a nasal problem and is supposed to have surgery to clear it up.

claro (reseda)

Dan, will you be at the BWAA dinner? Any plans for you or ESPN to interview Pac since it's reported he'll be in NY next week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I'll be at the dinner.

Grant (NY)

Is Tapia still struggling with his demons? Haven't heard much about him in quite a while.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

He will struggle with his demons until he's dead. He's supposed to fight in July.

Mitch (Oakland)

I am sick (but here at work b/c out of sick days), it's the Friday before a three day weekend. Only two things keeping me here are: iburprofen x 3, and DTM chat. Soooooooothing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Nice.

John (Ogden, Utah)

Follow-up to Jason's question. Now you're in a 3x3 room with no way of escape until someone discovers that you've gone missing and locates where you are. Would you rather be trapped with Carl Froch's wife or Joe Calzaghe's wife?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Now you're talking.

Charles (DFW)

The question earlier should have been what drains quicker, the Gulf of Mexico oil well or Floyd Mayweather's bank account?

Charles (DFW)

Since the BWAA voted Jose Sulaiman into the Hall of Fame in the first place, can't they at least amend their decision and declare him an accidental (as opposed to interim) member in (permanent) recess?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

The BWAA did not vote him in. The BWAA members to does not vote on the non-participant category. We vote on modern active fighters (like the 1940s to the present).

aziz (gateshead , england)

reminiscing over the greatest body shot knockout ever, roy jones jr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nKE8LME4sQ

David (Houston)

Katsidis would probably be outboxed easily by Khan and Khan is a lot bigger. Not sure that would be a good move for Katsidis other than money.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I think it's an interesting fight. Katsidis always makes great fights.

Charles (DFW)

To what extent is boxing subject to US Government regulation? Since Congress wants to try and enact a college football playoff, can't they stipulate that boxing organizations (IBF, WBO) only recognize one champion? At least 2 of the alphabets will be affected.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

College football only takes place in the US. How could the US govt regulate a worldwide sport? Besides, the congress has a lot more important things to do. They don't need to meddle in boxing. Let them figure out how to regulate off shore oil drilling first and how to plug that gaping hole at the bottomg of the Gulf of Mexico first.

Mike (Tampa)

Dan--I recently saw the HBO piece on Gattii's death. Knowing him the way you did, do you at all think he was capable of taking his own life? Sad story.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I always believed and will until I die that he was murdered until somebody shows me absolute evidence to the contrary.

Andrew (Louisville)

If this whole oil thing doesn't work out for BP I think they have a future as a sanctioning organization.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Brilliant since the organizations are oily anyway.

carlos (houston, tx)

so barrera with top rank....does that mean EL Terrible can team up with GBP?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

He is not with GB but he is going to work with them on his next fight, which is supposed to be a July 17 PPV against GB fighter Vicente Escobedo.

Chris Mannix (holding Dan's orange juice) (Boston Garden (Game 6

I'm new to these chats. So I have three questions: where is James Kirkland, do you agree with me that Yuri Foreman is the most exciting fighter in boxing and why do you hate Floyd Mayweather

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Now that is some funny stuff from my main man from Sports Illustrated! And by the way -- thanks for the OJ.

JJD (Seattle)

Povetkin beat Chris Byrd and Eddie Chambers to become the IBF mandatory in 2008. If he wasn't ready to fight the champion in the 2 1/2 years after gaining that status, why was he in the tournament in the first place?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

An excellent question, one for which there is no rational explanation except to say, "Hey, it's boxing, don't try to figure it out."

mike (ohio)

Dan, is Morales and Escobedo just talk or is that fight happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

It's not 100 percent done, but it looks like that will be the fight.

John (Phoenix)

Thunder Dan, any update on Giovanni Segura? He has become on of my favorite fighters over the last year and I would love to see him get in with Calderon eventually.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

He's supposed to fight in late July on TR Live. I forget the date off the top of my head but it's in today's notebook.

Jerrell (huntsville,al): [via mobile]

Who you got tonight orlando or boston?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Ask Chris Mannix, he knows NBA better than me. Chris, if you're still reading, let us know.

Carl Froch (Nottingham)

Dan it is wholly unfair that you held this chat at your computer today. I demand a re-chat on my desktop, in my living room, and with my girlfriend out of sight.

Joel (New York)

Hey Dan, what are your thoughts on Elio Rojas? I seen him fight bums I dont know people are so high on him. I have heard he can beat Gamboa which is very unlikey. In your expert opinion is he really this good that he can pose a threat on Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Rojas is a good boxer and went to Japan to win his title against a good opponent. He has not been too tested at the top level but he's got a lot of skill. I am not sure he can beat Gamboa, but maybe he could outbox him. That said, I think Gamboa would beat him if they make the fight.

Jose (Private Jet)

WBC - We Be Criminals OR World Boxings Cartel.

Tony (PHX)

any news on what is truly going with Guillermo Rigondeaux and when he is fighting? I think this guy has mega star potentional your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

The whole thing is a mess. I detailed some of the issues in today's notebook.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

Dan, do you think boxing should switch to cage? Cintron would have been able to finish the fight with Williams.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Kai (Ashburn, VA)

Does Odlanier Solis plan on fighting something a bit more dangerous than a rack of ribs in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

LOL! They is supposed to be discussion of him facing Valuev in a title eliminator but there's no deal or anything at this time.

Alex (Clev., OH)

Dan the Man, did you watch the Shawn Porter fight last weekend? I saw that he won but was unable to catch the fight.... Did he look good?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I didn't watch it.

Gordon (NYC)

would HBO buy Klitscko v. Valuev?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

If they make the fight, I am sure the network would consider it.

Mike brown (detroit)

If haye got into the ring with either one of the klitschko brothers, what in your mind do you honestly think would happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

As I have said before, I think either brother knocks him out.

Dibs (NYC)

Hey Dan....guess what...Peter Manfredo is a World Champion...

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

No he's not.

Chris Mannix (Boston Garden)

Still reading? Game's not till 8:30...I demand an 8-hour chat. Boston, narrow victory. Home crowd helps them build an early lead, KG and Rondo play much better pick-and-roll defense and Magic shooters (Lewis, Redick, Carter) wilt under the pressure of an elimination game in the second half.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

And there ya go. But I can assure you there will not be some insane long chat today.

Brian (London)

How awesome would it be if Giovanni Segura moved up to fight Vic Darchinyan? Bombs away!

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Segura is too small for him but those two guys would be swinging for the fences with every shot.

Jake (Philly, PA)

Now that Eddie Chambers lost to Klitschko, what does he do from here?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

We've talked about it before in the chat. Eddie might be best served going down to cruiserweight to fight guys his own size. At the top of the heavyweight division, he's simply not big enough to compete at a championship level.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

We have Bat Email news.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Weights are in from Puerto Rico, site of the evening PPV with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Rocky Martinez defending their titles: Vazquez 122, Bedak 121, Martinez 130, Mungia 129.5.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, how about Barrios being very resourceful and using the ref's shirt to wipe his cut everytime the ref broke the clinch between he and Popo. Classic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

That was one of the most ingenious things I have ever seen a fighter do.

Alex (Clev., OH)

Dano, have you ever been offered to do the Jim Rome show before a major fight. I think the Clones and Freaks would love it...

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I was on once years ago,I think when I was still at USA TODAY, when Jim Lampley was filling in as a guest host. I do know one thing -- the Freaks would kick the snot out of the Clones.

Luis (South jersey)

Dan, Ricardo Mayorga vs Kermit Cintron, how does that sound to you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Sounds like a good fight five years ago.

Gus (Passaic, NJ)

Read somewhere that the Cotto fight has only sold 12000 tickets...Arum saying he expects up to 30000. Any word on how the ticket sales are going?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I have no inside knowledge other than what the promoter says. I'm sure it will be a big crowd.

Richard (San Fran)

Any sign of the Golden Boy since you blogged on his whereabouts (or lack thereof)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

We he did show up at the Vazquez-Marquez fight last Saturday.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

My high cable bill finally paid off. I won tickets to the Cotto/Foreman fight from Cablevision. Looking forward to visiting the New Yankee stadium for the first time and experiencing a Cotto fight atmosphere.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

That's cool. Have fun.

Chris (Boston)

Reynaldo Lopez, seeing as though he has some power, would be a good step up for Rigondeaux. Do you agree? And do you see the fight happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Who knows? The fight was called off in April. It's in limbo now as well because of all the drama around Rigondeux's career.

Les (hamilton, On)

2 hours in and no mention of the Love Child. maybe I missed it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron (Duluth, MN)

Someone mentioned that it would be great if you had a podcast and I agree. With UFC/MMA having post fight PPV shows, who won't ESPN do the same for boxing? I know they show you and Kenny on ESPN News after a big PPV for a few minutes, but you guys deserve to have a show after PPV's.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I would like that too. Alas, I don't make those decisions. It is above my pay grade.

nick (ky)

It safe to say that Cintron won't ever fight on HBO again? It seems to always be something with him, gets to a point where it's simply not a coincidence no?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

You never say never in boxing.

Joe (Philly)

Where does Lucian Bute go from here?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Depends on where here is.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you all enjoy your Memorial Day weekend. We'll chat next week, when I am in New York for the Foreman-Cotto fight. Enjoy the weekend. Peace.
