Hang on folks. We're tracking down Bruce.
Hi, sorry I'm late.. been on the phone...
Bruce, how well do you think tennessee will do this year with Derek Dooley as the head coach?
This year I think will be tough for him.. all new OLine, new QB and it's the third system in three years for these players to buy into. I think anything better than 6-6 is very, very optimistic.
Do you think the gators 2 QB system will work?
It worked four years ago, but we'll see if it can work that well. Reports on John Brantley have been outstanding.
Just have to start by saying that "meat market" was a stellar book! Is FSU gaining ground on Florida in recruiting and would a move to the SEC boost FSUs recruiting efforts?
Thanks! I was actually running late because I've been trying to track down the whereabouts of some of those recruits for my blog.I think FSU is because there is intrigue about a new regime. That tends to happen. Also Jimbo Fisher hired some very good recruits, most notably Eddie Gran who has strong ties in South Florida. As for the SEC connection, I don't think it would hurt, but recruiting in state isn't a struggle for them I dont think.
Good afternoon, Bruce. What's your assessment of who will be Penn State's starting QB and how their season will end up (9-3?)? Thanks!
Hey John, I'm not sure which direction they end up going. FWIW I was impressed by Robert Bolden last summer when I saw him here for a week at the Elite 11, but he's probably 2 yrs away. I'd buy 9-3 or 8-4... Too much inexperience on offense, even with a very good RB in Evan Royster.
What is a smarter move for BSU: wait and see if MWC gets BCS status, or jump into the PAC-10? If given either option.
I don't think they have the Pac-10 as an option. I think going to the MWC would be a good play for Boise even if Utah would later leave, it's still an upgrade.
Which freshman do you expect to have the biggest impact for USC next year?
I saw plenty of reasons this spring to say Dillon Baxter. He's a chance to be special. I'll say him.
What is your favorite preseason CFB preview magazine and why?
Of the standalone CF annuals, I have to go with Phil Steele's guide. It's a great resource for any diehard fan. The little record sections of the past 5 years per team is something I look at a lot over a year.
Is Nebraska's Roy Helu Jr. All-Conference caliber or do you see the torch being passed to Rex Burkhead this year?
No, I think Helu is that good. Burkhead is solid too and will get a lot of carries. They're in good shape there.
How many wins does Les Miles need in order to not feel any heat? I'm thinking 9-3, and beating Bama would certainly help.
That would be good I think. A big key will be winning the opener against UNC in ATL to build some momentum. If they can beat Alabama and UNC, I'd think they'd do a lot better than 9-3. I'm expecting a big year from RB Michael Ford and CB Patrick Peterson might be the most talented defensive player in the whole country. QB though is a major question mark.
Lets say Alabama, Boise and a team from the BE lets say WVU, all go undefeated which team would get left out of the NC Game?
It depends.. if that Big East team is Pitt, with their schedule, I think they'd overtake Boise in the rankings, especially if they beat a Miami team that beats either VT or Ohio State (since Boise would own a win over VT as well).
How do you think the oregon ducks will do in the pac 10 with all there off season issues?
I visited Eugene last month and came away very impressed. I think they're going to be a top 10 this fall.
How does BC or Don Bosco not make the pipeline rankings, it seems they have produced a lot of high level talent recentley(Cushing,Teel,Toal etc)?
The Pipeline story I did was position specific. If you look at the LBs those schools produced it's just not on the same level as the quantity and quality that Dallas Skyline is cranking out.
Any chance Coley White is able to take the QB job from Geno Smith?
It's possible, especially if he's close to as good as his big brother. BTW, WVU has a really impressive freshman QB coming in too.
Thank you for posting my question
Any chance the Big 10 would take just one team and if it's not Notre Dame, will it be Nebraska which has some national "cache" or a middling type program like Mizzou that has population but not much else?
I wouldn't rule anything out at this point. My hunch is they go to 16, but we'll see.
Once again there are people (including ESPN bloggers) doubting Paul Johnson and Georgia Tech. What does it take for a coach with an conventional offense to silence critics for good? Urban Meyer did it with a national championship. Is that what it's going to take for PJ to do the same?
He is a well-respected coach, but it's not like they're coming off a top 10 season. They didn't finish last season off well. I think they're a top 25 team, but I think there are 3-4 teams in the league who are more talented/complete.
who do you think will have a better year brian kelly with notre dame or chip kelly with the ducks?
Chip has a lot more experience coming back. I'll say him.
Do you think Bud Foster can re-tool the D in time for the Boise St. game?
Sure, he's got a track record for doing that.
hey bruce what are the chances that the b.c. eagles win 10 this year
Not quite a long shot, but I think that's a stretch. I like the D with two great LBs and a good RB in Montel Harris, but I don't see the QB play at a level to win 10.
If the Big10 goes to 16 teams do they still call it the Big10? I know they have 11 teams now and its still called the Big10
No, I think they just call it Delanyland.
Odds that Pittsburgh beats Utah, Miami and Notre Dame this year?
All three of those? I'll say 20%. Two out of three, I'd go with 40%.
Can Hawkins win 7-8 games and save his job at CU?
I don't think he will.
how long before florida erects a tim tebow statue outside the stadium to go with that plaque of his speach
Actually, I doubt they'd do that until after his NFL career ends.
Bruce - love your work. Where would you rank Tyrod Taylor among ACC quarterbacks? Thanks.
Thanks Austin. I'd put him in the top half, but not at the very top. Because he plays with some outstanding backs, he's not going to put up the numbers that Ponder and Harris put up. I still think he's got to be more consistent, but he certainly made strides last year.
What are the top stadiums that you have yet to see a game at and would like to?
I've never been to A&M for a game and I've never been to Clemson either. I think that's at the top of my list at this point.
Do you think Bo Pelini would go back to LSU if Miles is canned or bolts for Michigan; or is NU his dream job?
I think he's building something big there at Neb., I doubt he'd want to bolt on that.
How do you think Kevin Prince will do for UCLA this year?
I think he's going to surprise some people. It's his third year in the system with two very good QB minds. He's much more athletic than people give him credit for and the WRs/TEs are better now.
Could Jerrod Johnson go in the first round next year??
He's got the size, feet and intelligence that the NFL will love. He is streaky as a passer. I've heard people like his arm strength but don't love it. I am a big believer in him. I think he's really underrated nationally.
Odds of ND beating USC this year?
Not great considering they haven't beaten USC in a very long time now and this one is in LA.
y is nobody talkin about rayn broyls
They are. I think I've mentioned Ryan Broyles in two of the last 3-4 chats I've done.
Stanford to win the PAC-10?
Not seeing it. I think losing Toby G will have a huge impact on them because everything seemed to feed off his physical style.
Will Quizz Rodgers and/or LaMike James break the PAC10 all time career rushing record? Any chance at the National record?
I feel like Quizz has a better shot, but let's see what Lamike James does now.
How far away is June Jones from making SMU a C-USA powerhouse??? One year??? Two???
A powerhouse? I think he's made them good, which was a huge step, beyond that I don't know. I wouldn't call Houston a powerhouse at this point and I think they're another step above whereSMU is right now.
Hey Bruce,Pending if Nebraska bolts for the Big 10, do you see that as the key for the Big 12 staying entact?
I think Texas is the big key with the Big 12.
who has the best receivers this year
As a collection, Miami has the most impressive group of receivers I've seen.
Will Rutgers have more than 7 wins this year
Probably. Four of their non conference games are almost locks. After that they get Syracuse, L'ville and UCONN at home. They should be favored in all three. That means they need one road win (after the trip to FIU)... They have a good QB and Mo Sanu is a big time talent.
What is the biggest reason teams go from crap to dynasty? I hate being a USU fan sometimes.
You get the right coach and he brings in a good staff and they made smart choices recruiting and you get lucky. And most of that staff stays and doesn't get complacent.
Do Iowa have the best D-Line unit in the nation? can you give us your top 3 at that position
I'm tempted to go with UNC with Quinn and Austin leading the way. I'd put Ohio State and Iowa in the running along with Ole Miss and OU.
What are you thoughts on ND's defense?
I think it will be improved as some of these younger players mature. Still not sure they have the talent up front to be a really outstanding D, but they hadn't even been a good D for quite a while.
can ingrem repeat as heisman winner
I don't think so. It's almost impossible to repeat and Ingram has to share carries with another great RB in Trent richardson.
What are your expectations for Notre Dame this year?
As I said, I think ND will be better on D and still be pretty sharp on offense. I like Dayne Crist's skills and Mike Floyd might be the best WR in the country. The O-line has some holes but I just expect them to be a lot sharper overall because of the upgrade at head coach.
What is Finebaum going to grill you about today?
I don't know, just as long as he doesn't ask me about Lost I'm fine with it. Maybe we'll talk Rampage-Rashad. Probably not though.
Bruce... How can USC's D line not be in the top 3.??? Big mistake.
I know the folks out here have big expectations, but those other groups I mentioned have more proven guys. USC's defensive line wasn't very productive last season especially the way they played in the second half of the year. Maybe they'll improve and play great in 2010. We'll see.
With the loss of key players like Nate Triplett and Eric Decker, can Minnesota even have a hope to be in the top 5 of the Big 10 this year?
I don't think it'll happen. Eric Decker was a fantastic football player. He was just a great all-around talent... catch and block and be physical. He's really gonna be missed.
Do you think two non bcs teams will make a bcs bowl this year?
I think so.. Boise and TCU are my guesses. But they won't make it to the big BCS title game.
does cal have a prayer of winning the pac-10?
I don't like their chances. I think QB has become a problem for them. I'm not expecting them to finish in the top five in the Pac-10 this year.
Three more questions...
Will any team go undefeated this year
Yes, I think so. My guess is there will be more than two unbeatens at the FBS level.
Speaking of D-Line talk, what do you think of the potential of Jared Crick for the Huskers?
He plays hard and is very productive. They think he can be an All-American. A big test will be how he performs without having Suh there causing all of that havoc.
Can you explain the reason why writers/reporters seem to be afraid to attack the story of oversigning and the inherent advantages it gives schools in such conferences as the SEC? Why doesn't anyone ever bring it up? Are people afraid? What is there to be afraid of?
I feel like writers actually talk about it a lot. I know it's been discussed quite a bit down south in the previous five years. And it got a ton of attention when Houston Nutt signed almost 40 recruits last year and it prompted the SEC to pass a rule against such an inflated class.
