Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Greetings folks. How are we all doing?

Forrest (Indianapolis)

Do you think the 2014 Superbowl being in a cold-weather climate will take away from the game itself? I mean, I know that a lot of games are played in cold weather every year, but...this is the game of all games. I don't want to watch two QB's that can barely throw the ball due to the weather and cold hands, and WR's that can barely catch because they can't feel their fingers, and Kickers that can't kick a game-winning field goal because the ball is too dead to travel 40 yards in the air. To me this seems like it is merely a gamble on boosting revenue at the expense of the actual game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Do you hate an AFC title game in Pittsburgh or an NFC championship game in Green Bay?

Rob (kentucky)

Last week I asked how much $$ CJ2K has already made and you responded 7.27 million dollars. How do people feel sorry for a guy that has averaged over 3.5 million a year so far. I understand he isnt making that much money this year but after I heard after incentives he could make as much as 1.8 million. That means for three years he could make over 9 million. That is 3 million a year. What is he crying about?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Compared to others playing the same position and doing less, it's not a lot. That's his complaint. It's true. But he's also under contract for three more years.

Chris (Pasadena, Ca)

Enjoy your stuff. Always good to see balance work on the teams in the division.I think since the regime change the Texans have done a great job, and I realize that teams are not made through free agency any longer, but it appears that most commentators see much bigger holes in the team than the front office seems to see. I also realize the Texans brass hold its potential moves tight to the vest, but any new news. Danny Clark is not the answer at linebacker. Any hint of interest in Bullock? Wilson is there guy at FS at the moment but with the loss of Cushing who was, what, second in sacks last year, the secondary will have to cover for longer. Any hint on Atogwe? Henderson, A. Thomas? I realize the execs like players still on the rise in their career, but Atogwe is still young. I am not convinced that Diles or Adibi have more upside than Bullock on the downside of his career does. Henderson may be a shadow of what he once was, but certainly the team could get more (although infrequent) pressure from him than from Cody?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Well we can't just list all the popular and recognizable names and they don't chase a lot of old timers. I think they should have looked to upgrade on Wilson and am interested in Atogwe. Bulluck could fit, but if he's not going to be ready early when Cushing is out, what's the point? Henderson won't give the effort they'd expect, I don't think.

Brian (Nashville, TN)

Paul, please assess the 2 big-name undrafted rookies that the Titan's signed at running back this year. LB seemed like a beast to tackle @ Oregon, while SJ had the potential to be All-Pac 10 material before the injury. Which will emerge as the 3rd in the line-up? Depending on CJ's hold-out situation and Ringer's performance, is there a chance we will see one of these 2 starting sometime this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I think Blount is a far more attractive back -- he's different than CJ and Ringer, not another "version" of them. They need the third guy to be bigger.

John (Indy)

Why does Peppermint Patty where sandals in Charlie Brown's Christmas special when there is snow on the ground?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

In the cartoon world, snow and sand are the same -- 72 degrees. At least that's what Schroeder told me.

Brian (The Boro)

Why is Mr. 55 as he calls himself holding out on signing his tender? I know money but is it becuase they want a paycheck to make sure they have cash during lock out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

They don't get paid now. Base salary comes in 17 installments during the regular season. He'll sign by June 15. And can still stay away.

Clay (Duval County)

What up PK, with the signing of Smiley, would you say there's more of a hot seat for Meester or Manuwai? I figured the move would slide Uche to the center spot, leaving Vince at RG and Smiley at LG, but have read some things recently about Vinny M being on the hot seat. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I cannot see Manuwai out of the mix there. I think Jack was doing some fire lighting. Piece on interior line situations around division coming up shortly on the blog.

Terence (Nashville, TN)

CJ contract-free zone too much to ask, I suppose. At least you are taking a chat hiatus as the "drama" continues this summer.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

A bit of vacation before trips to Indy and Houston for minicamp and some OTAs.

Jamel (Duval)

Marc Mariani seems to be a solid 7th round pick. Think he gets in the rotation by weeks six if not sooner? Maybe the Wes Welker for the Titans? And Thanks for giving me something to do at work.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Thanks for coming. The Titans' rotation is three deep. He's not getting into that without injuries, I don't expect.

Dominique Edison (Titan's bench)

Will I get a sniff of playing time this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

You'd need a roster spot first, and there won't be one for you.

Nathan (Coralville, IA)

Most people see the Colts as a dead lock cinch to repeat as division champs, but I don't. Peyton is great and all, but there is the post Super Bowl loss-hangover to consider, and I'm not sure ANY team can overcome that. Derrick Morgan is a stud, and the Texans have made some good moves as well. What do you think? I wouldn't be surprised that if the Colts make the playoffs, it's as a wild card...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Why will they be hungover? They were 13-3 after they WON the Super Bowl.

David (Jacksonville, Florida)

One of the least talked about issues about the Jaguars has been the decline of the interior offensive line the past few years. Is Justin Smiley healthy enough to help the Jags O Line ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I don't do well predicting health, sorry. You and I are on the same page about today's column, however. Smiley is certainly in the mix. They can go a lot of different directions and inside guys will have to really win jobs.

Taylor (CA)

The only difference is that the AFC/NFC games are intended to give a team an advantage. That's their reward for the regular season. The Super Bowl is supposed to be a neutral site. My major concern for 2014 is the wind at the Meadowlands. Whoever wins the coin toss may get a significant advantage in terms of passing / defending the pass.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Why is a dome a neutral site if you've built your team to grind it out in the Colts? Don't all these warm weather/ indoor games give an inherit advantage to teams that play in domes and warm weather?

Don (Alabama)

Am I wrong to be cautiously optimistic that the Ugoh at LG experiment will be a success? Do you think a healthly Adam Terry has a legitimate shot at starting at LT, and if not, who would you put your money on?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I'd put my money on Charlie Johnson right now. They've got guard options with Ugoh, DeVan, Alleman, Pollak and McClendon. Next best thing to a high pick is a quality stable of options.

Reasonable (Miami)

Do the other NFL Nation bloggers ever get bitter cause Tim Graham NEVER DOES A CHAT?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I can't speak for the other six. But I love the little Jedi.

blake (bay city, tx)

texans 4-2 in division games this year: (Over/Under)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Under. I think.

Corey (Waverly)

PK, do you think Michael Griffin can bounce back this year? Was last year maybe just a bad year with injuries and personal issues or is he overrated and just had a good year the year before by benefitting from the dominating d-line we had with Haynesworth?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I don't have cause to believe it yet. The personal issue stuff is big. He said he had a handle on it midway through last season and was still bad. He's a key, key guy for them.

Brian (Indy)

Paul, do you think Mathis' wanting a new contract is being caused by Jerry Hughes? Maybe he is wanting a little reassurance from the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

I think it's about money, like all these guys with issues who are staying away from their teams right now. And he got a nice front-loaded fair contract back in the day. I don't see much credence to his complaint.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Attention world: It's B-U-L-L-U-C-K. If you want to talk Sandra, you're in the wrong place. If you want to talk Keith, I'm going to officially require spelling his name correctly. Thank you for your attention.

Jeff Smith (jeffssmith1@yahoo.com)

What is the deal with Atogwe? Why wouldn't the Rams try to keep him? He's a solid safety and yet, it appears, the Rams aren't interested in him. Are there other issues there, unknown to the public?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

The issue is his price. He was franchised last year. Now his salary as a restricted free agent has to be 110 percent of that. They are reluctant to pay that.

Brian (Jacksonville)

What's your opinion of the "Team Teal" grassroots effort spearheaded by Tony Boselli? I don't think people outside of Jacksonville really realize the lengths the Jaguars are going to, in order to get people in that stadium.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Very impressive effort. But still not enough to assure no blacking out, and that's what they need.

Brian (The Boro)

Has someone seen the San Diego Chicken in awhile or did someone eat him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Didn't he retire?

Jeff Smith (Florida)

IF Alualu turns out to be a great DT this year for the Jags, will Gene Smith get the benefit of the doubt next year when he doesn't follow Mel Kiper's value board?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

He should. But Gene doesn't only have to know who's good, he has to know how the rest of the league values a guy. We don;t know the answer to that for sure. I know people who loved Alualu, just not there. (Kiper a non-factor for him of course.)

Jeff (Duval County)

Which one of these have a better chance of occurring David Garrard being benched this year for the back-up QB McNown, or me winning the lottery?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

A

Vince Lombardi (The Great Beyond)

Is this what football has become? Worrying about the weather? Glad I'm not still around Paul. These fans are too soft.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

You speak, I provide volume.

Brian (The Boro)

I know they will pay in 17 week installments - Is he not holding out for an extension which would mean signing bonus right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Long term deal comes with a bonus, yes. Maybe more than one.

Zac (Franklin, TN)

First player to get a new deal: Andre Johnson, CJ2k, or Mathis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

AJ. And no deals for CJ, Robert Mathis or Rashean Mathis.

Fernando (Charleston, Sc)

Do you think Morgan has a legit chance of winning rookie of the year? Will he get enough playing time to back his case up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

He will get plenty of playing time.

Jeremy (Dallas)

Hey Paul, with all of this super bowl talk why isn't Houston in the mix? Seems like reliant stadium is a great stadium and no need to worry about snow on the field there. Is Houston not making a push for some reason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Houston will bid again and I would think it'll host again. It wasn't in consideration here -- you have to bid for it.

Dave (Denver)

Paul, I'm stuck out here in CO with no coverage of the Titans whatsoever. What is the most exciting offseason move we have made thus far and how do you think our defense will respond to a lackluster effort last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Internet covers a lot of ground, my friend. Click on the AFC South blog, for instance, and boom, you're in Indy/Jax/Houston and Nashville. Morgan's the best addition, I think. I think the defense has a lot of guys who have to grow up all at once.

Sandra Bullock [via mobile]

I want to talk about Keith Bulluck. Where do you think he'll play? PS: Do you have Tim Graham's number?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Detroit maybe? You don't want to talk to Graham. He's with Jar Jar Binks playing video games in his mom's basement. You need sunlight and sunshine in your life.

Rob (Kentucky)

With the 2014 SB in New Jersey, does that open the door for all other out door stadiums or is it just a New York thing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

They say it's B.

Nick (Columbus, IN)

Your thoughts on the order of the Colts' WR depth chart?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Wayne, Garcon, Collie. Gonzalez to start. Just my gut, have the injured guy ease back and press the kids from the fourth spot.

Finley (Nashville International Airport)

Doc Rivers called...said he needed some fresh legs for game 6 in Boston. Leave the key under the mat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

OK buddy, but you know I can't root for Boston or stand to watch the NBA. Do what you've got to do.

Brian (Jacksonville)

I'm a Gator fan, but the amount of Tebow Broncos jerseys worn around town disgusts me. You think Ketchman has it right that the issue in Jax is over picking college or pro?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Seems like. Don't understand why Nashville football people can wear Orange on Saturday and Blue on Sunday without difficulty, however.

Kevin Costner (Gulf Coast)

PK, when I get done solving the BP crisis, will you tell Sandra to give me a call. She won't return any of my texts. Thanks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Done. Sandra, read this.

Cory (AF, UT)

The Super Bowl is as much about the game as it is the hype around the game. Very few people think of going to the cold weather as a good time. As for your comment about the warm sites giving an advantage to the dome or warm weather teams it doesn't. Does the Jets defense play better in the cold? Do they run the ball better in snow? Limiting the impact of weather gives you a better game, it does not limit one team or the other. I hope that it did not open Pandora's box.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

They will find 80,000 people willing to pony up and sit in the cold. It's not going to be a problem. I don't understand why it's a monumental deal.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

What's with all the Brians' today?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

I won't let any more in as it's already creating too much confusion.

Michael (Michigan)

Best Draft pick in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Hit me in two years. February of 2012. Unless there is a full season lockout.

Razel (Texas)

Paul can you do another Vince Young 5 point to success? I bookmarked the article you did and I have to say you were right on the money! I thought at the time you were being very critical but you did a brilliant job sir. I know he needs to work on not fumbling and his accuracy. Thanks Paul you da man!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I think he still has some work to do on some of those. Thanks for remembering.

Jamel (Duval)

Who do you think will get an NFL team first: Orlando, LA, or Canada?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

LA.

Todd (LaVergne,TN)

Is there only a certain number of teams allowed to bid for a Superbowl? If no,why wouldnt every team just bid for it? What is there to lose?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

You don't just raise your hand. You put together a huge proposal that covers every single thing that goes on all week -- media center, team hotels and on and on. Why devote a lot of time and resources to that if you don't have a chance? And average temperature over 50 degrees has been a rule with this one exception.

PK Fan (Stalkersville)

Why do you think everyone's high on the Texans to the point of predicting them to take the division? They finally got to 9-7, but 9-7 won't come close to winning the AFC South. More to the point, they're 1-16 against the current AFC Champion Colts!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

People looking for a breakthrough team love to pick the Texans to be it.

Nick ((wisconsin))

does dallas becomes first team in the super bowl when hosting it?should they have it in dallas every year cuz it holds 100,000 plus people?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

A) No. B) Because if they were making a permanent Super Bowl site, it'd be New Orleans. It's about more than capacity.

Mike (cohoes, ny)

Ok, PK I know Fisher has said the Haynesworth is not coming back to Tennessee but I wonder why? Washington has paid a great deal of his contract, he liked Nashville and Fisher, fits well with the defense and looks like TN wouldn't have to give up much. Am I missing something?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Yes, you're missing the part where the Titans make an offer that's sufficient for the Skins. Clearly Washington wants more than Tennessee has offered.

David Garrard (Jax)

We've signed Smiley and my rookie tackles are now bigger and badder 2nd year players. My receivers will be better this year too. Is this the year I move up from the middle of the pack into the top third of QBs? Can I repeat 2007 when I finished with a stellar 102 QB rating?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

I don't believe you can get back to that level. I do think the team can improve if you're top of middle of the pack. Even if you're very god, they draft a quarterback next year.

Julia (Former Fandom)

Former Colts fan fed up with their postseason heartbreak, but I'm curious: which one player other than their overrated, anxiety-prone quarterback do you think the Colts could least afford to lose?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

You're nuts, for starters. You poor long-suffering Colts fan. No Super Bowl win since 06 and you win your division every year. How can you stand it? Yeah, most four-time MVPs are overrated. No, wait. He's the only one! What do you think they pass those out like lollipops?

mike (vermont)

cincinnati was a playoff team last year and now in the last power rankings i saw then were very low. do you see them making the playoffs again, or falling back to their norm.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Probably falling back. I love Carson Palmer, but it's time to do it weekly.

Reggie Nelson (Jax)

What happened to me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

You lost interest and thought you had things figured out. I think.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

What did you think of the Lost finale?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I think the Yanks played well that night. Don't remember.

Jay (Bellaire, TX)

Do you think the Texans coaches' belief that Antawn Moulden can come back from injury and make a difference in his third year a reason why they didn't address FS in the draft

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

What about the part where he's a corner, not a safety?

Jeff Fisher (Baptist Sports Park)

Hey Paul you wanna play in my softball game in a couple weeks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

At long last an invite. I can't hit, however.

Clay (Charlotte)

I like lollipops.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Me too. Wish there was one handy here.

Julia (On the phone w/ your boss)

Sadly, you were too busy insulting me and name calling to reply to my actual question: which Colts player could the team least do without other than their Rgreat REGULAR SEASON QB? I'd go with Dallas Clark. Also, why is it no other blogger routinely belittles their readers? Interesting appraoch you have...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Sorry, I think it's Freeney, absolutely. I don't belittle. But if someone says something I consider ridiculous, I call it ridiculous. I think the majority of people here and on the blog want that from me.

Richard (Austin)

I have been following OTA's and the news on ESPN and Houstontexans.com and it looks like Arian Foster is the back working with first team. Does this mean that Slaton may be going on the block or is it a ploy to make him work harder to regain his spot as the starter and where do you think Tate will come in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Perhaps Slaton is not ready? I think if they rely on Foster for anything substantial, it's a mistake. Tate's had a hammy. He's going to start.

Tyler (San Francisco)

Paul: What is a realistic win total for the 49ers this year? Is Gore going to get more carries with the improved O-Line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

They can win the division. I don't have their schedule in front of me to count up possible wins, though.

Nick (Columbus, IN)

Who do you see winning the battle for #2 Tight End for the Colts next year? Eldridge, Tamme, or Santi?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

You don't even list Robinson. Like it. Sight unseen, I'd predict and expect Eldridge.

Frank Wycheck [via mobile]

PK is right, Julia. And when he sees something ridiculous he says so, like my wardrobe

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Or that hair. Even as a bald guy I can say Frankie's hair is out of control. What a bonnet.

Rob (Orange Park, FL)

Hey PK! I don't think Osgood will get much time at WR for the Jags. But with him & Montell Owens, the Jags might have the best 2 ST players in the conference if not the league. Owens hasn't made the Pro Bowl as a ST'er because of Osgood. Do you see ST as something that might make a difference for the Jags this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

It's smart for them to try. But it's not one-third of the game -- count up the snaps. Take an edge there if you can get one. But you've got to be better on offense and defense to really compete. And you need big returns if you're going to be a great ST team. Those guys are blocking, not returning.

Jack Del Rio (Fishing)

You can't hit? Hey well neither can Reggie Nelson, so don't feel too bad PK.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Kind of you, JDR. You have a game too, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I can ump.

Vic Ketchman (Everywhere)

In response to Julia's question.... I think I have been rubbing off on you..

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

No offense, but my personality was pretty much as is before we met.

Sandra Bullock [via mobile]

Would you please tell Mr. Costner that, although I'm flattered by his request, I've been going through a hard time. And besides, Waterworld sucked.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Kevin, please read this. (Harsh. Not like Miss Congeniality 2 was good, and it's way more recent than Waterworld. Or The Postman.)

Jamel (Duval)

But Great Blocks create Great Returns right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Sometimes. Also great returners create great returns. I'd rather have a great returner than a great blocker for an average returner.

Nick (Columbus, IN)

Will the Yanks win the AL East or is Tampa too good this year? I donno if you follow the NL, but do you think Atlanta has a real shot to beat out Philly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Philly wins by a lot. Yanks get in playoffs, doesn't matter if it's as division winner or WC.

Frank (nash)

You need to update your picture with to a new one that shows how fat you have gotten

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Yeah, right after you do that with yours at 1045thezone.com.

Ed Hochuli (Mobile)

We have to fouls on the play. One on Julia for leaving a team because of the heartbreak they gave her (try being a Brown, Lions, Rams fan). The second, also on Julia, for insulting a blogger when you voluntarily came to the chat. The offense will accept the first penalty. 15 yards and repeat first down.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

A good selection for our final word. Thanks Ed, and everyone. Always a quick hour. Enjoyed it. See you soon.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Here's the column addressing a lot of the interior O-line topics we touched on: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/12032/interior-o-lines-change-everywhere
