Big weekend of racing folks. I'm off to Indy in the morning. What's on your mind?
QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2,25 PM HI TERRY WHO YOU HAVE AT CHARLOTTE SUNDAY
Hard to pick against JJ at this track, but I'd like to see a team owner do the double. Penske has a good shot with Kurt Busch and Helio.
Kurt Busch looked really good on Saturday; you expect him to to be just as good for the 600?
It's two totally diferent situations, so it's hard to say. One is a spring and the other is an endurance race. So the team with the best pits stops usually wins. But Kurt got a little lucky Saturday. His brother was going to win that race before Denny bumped him.
Sorry I'm late, but IT'S NOT MY FAULT!
Very funny fake Danica. I have a DP column coming Thursday you won't want to miss.
I will be making my first trip to Indy this weekend. What is something that is a can't miss at this event?
Gasoline Alley if you have a pit pass. A walk through the Indy infield is pretty historic stuff. And make a trip to the museum. It will take your breath away.
Maybe instead of giving $20M to the winner of both the Indy 500 and Coke 600, give $5M for top 10 finishes in each race, $10M top 5 finishes and $20M for winning both. It's a better carrot and more acheivable.
I agree, but it won't happen. It's much easier to offer $20 million when you know it's not going to happen.
Unlike most races this year...All Star Race was very Boring in my opinion. Your thoughts? Also heard any sponsor rumors for Harvick and Stewart next year. Thanks
The hot rumor is Bud will go to harvick, but they also are talking to UPS. As the the race, I would like to see it moved around to other cities to make bring that wild no-points philosophy to other tracks.
With TV money, I don't see Indy changing the time of their race to the old earlier starting time, so would you say Smith's 20 mil offer to a winner of both is just cheap PR?
It's definitely cheap PR, but they are going to change the times. That announcement could come this week.
Why do you think the fans booed Danica? Is it possible they are tired of her not producing or is it in reaction to her imminent departure to nascar?
Probably a little of both. They are tired of her whining. Shut up and drive.
Is it over? The Hamlin and Kyle B saga...?
I'm sure they will tell everyone this week how much they love each other. blah, blah, blah.
Do you think Nascar needs to do something about all the blocking like how Denny blocked Kyle Sat night in the All Stert race?
No. It goes with the have-at-it philosophy. The worst blocking happen at Daytona and Dega because of the yellow-line rule.
We heard this week that the lawsuit against NASCAR by the former owners of Kentucky Speedway have been dropped, so will it be Atlanta that loses a race?
It appears Bruton wants to make some renovations to Kentucky before moving a Cup race there, so it might not happen until 2012. But Atlanta is the likely place to lose a race unless Bruton managed to buy Pocono or Dover. Highly unlikely.
Do you see newman or stewart being able to win races this season and make the chase?
Tony typically gets hot in the summer months, so it wouldn't surprise me. But that team is running the way it did a year ago and they don't know why.
Danica told the truth, but she could have been a little more diplomatic, as her teammate Tony Kanaan told her in private Saturday night.
Mrs Danica Patrick seems unhappy etc.... Your guess as to her motive if any or just plain unhappy as to the performace of her open wheeler...
She's unhappy that the Andretti cars have struggled at Indy, a place where they're normally very good. But the whole season has been a downer for her.
Why did Andretti's cars perform so poorly on qualifying at Indy?
They don't relaly know, but my guess is they tried to go too far on the edge with the set-up and made the cars almost impossible to drive. If Kanaan wrecks twice, you know they're way off.
What is a realistic finishing position for John Andretti, and how much involvement does RPM have in the Window World entry?
They aren't contender to win, but Indy is a long race and you can post a top 10 if you keep your nose clean and race conservatively.
Kurt said he tossed the inexperienced Logano a "softball" on the final restart to get that great restart. Are The Busch Brothers the best in Nascar on the restarts? With the 3 GWC and double file is that why The Busch Brothers are so dominant?
Kyle is one of the best I've ever seen on restarts. Kurt's OK, but not like Kyle. The best in NASCAR on resarts might be old Ron Hornaday.
Any opinions on the new qualifying format at Indy? Seemed to be a success (Helio ending the shoot-out early not withstanding).
I thought it was a huge success. And having such a dramatic Bump Day was like the days of old. It warmed my heart, although I'm sure if didn't warm Paul Tracy's heart.
I heard that Danica got boo'd at Indy, what was that all about?
She got out of her car and complained about how bad her car was, saying it was the worst car she's ever had there.
It's looking more and more like Kasey will be in the #5 next year and that Mr. H has no plans to add a 3rd car to his satelite team SHR, so where does that leave Mark Martin and do you think Dale will leave Henricks?
It's all still foggy, but I thought the plan was to announce the end of the musical chairs this weekend. If it were up to me, Kasey would be in the 5 in 2011, but I'm not sure it will work out that way.
Terry,You going to make the NHRA US Nationals this year? What was your take on the 4 wide racing?
I loved the four-wide racing and was glad to see they decided to do it again, despite the complaints from the drivers. I won't be at the U.S. Nationals this year.
If we take an AMS date away, any chance Road Atlanta gets looked at as a second date in the Atlanta area? That's a big market to pull back from.
Now that the first class has entered the HOF, who do you see as the 5 for next year?
The five I picked in my blog are Pearson, Yarborough, Dale Imman, Lee Petty and Raymond Parks. But Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip also have an excellent chance of making the 2011 five.
Terry, the Roush cars still seem a few steps behind. What was the reaction for the FR9 after the all star race?
I know Biff won the qualifier, but I don't know that it made a significant difference.
Do you see NASCAR ever adding a road course to the Chase?
Not anytime soon, but I think they should. I think the champ should have to race a road course in the playoff. I wish they would move Sonoma into the Chase.
Sunday was the first time I've ever heard Mr. Jim France speak. How come he doesn't take a more active role in Nascar and why wasn't he named chairman instead of Brian?
Jim is very active, he just prefers to do it behind the scenes. Brian was the logically choice in the father/son/grandson line.
Has 88 Team infected the 5 Team? The 5 team has lost a couple of spots in standing... The 88 Teams seems to have settled in producing cars that are midpack... Any reason for hope in the horizon?
All the 5 and 88 cars are built togetrher by the same guys, so it would make sense that they would struggle together. But Mark and Jr. have much different driving styles, so all that changes when they get to the track and adjust the set-ups.
Sonoma is a boring race track, Terry, especially since they neutered it for NASCAR by taking out the Carousel. Let's see what kind of show the Nationwide cars put on at Road America and then see if that's a good place to head.
You are leaving out one very important factor Brian: Market size. It's about being in the Bay Area market. And racing in the wine country ain't so bad either. But racing at Sonoma has been pretty good in recent years.
Any chance that 24 wins another cup? or are we looking at a guy whose simply past his prime?
Jeff still can win a title, probably moreso now because of the Chase. You just have to get hot for 10 races.
Even if Dale jr wins a race this year and makes the chase as you and many others have predicted, what difference will it make? Do you expect Dale jr to challenge for the 2010 Sprint Cup championship?
Uh, no. And at this point, I don't think he wil make the Chase.
Austin Dillion had loose lug nuts that caused his wreck just like on Kyle's truck. Did the same disgruntled employee try to sabatoge both Kyle and Austin's trucks?
That's a very mysterious situation that NASCAR is investigating.
We are kinda new to Nascar but isn't the way Kyle Busch was really ticked off and going to Hamlins hauler old school and how Earnhart and the old drivers used to act?
Yes it is. The difference between now and then is they didn't have TV cameras everywhere following their every move, so we didn't always know about it.
After Danica got booed at IMS do you see Danica coming to nascar full time sonner than later?
She needs to make a decision and not try to have one foot in each pond. It'll never work that way.
If one more person compares Kyle Busch to Dale Earnhardt I am going to vomit.
If Kyle starts winning Cup titles you may have an upset stomach quite often.
It's possible, but there are some complications. I like Kasey, but if I was running Budweiser, I might look for a driver who looks older than 15.
So you mean Dale Earnhardt would get really whiny and storm off slinging his hands in a temper tantrum?
No, but he sure as heck would confront a driver at his hauler. And I didn't compare Kyle to Earnhardt.
Are Nascar fans today more comfortable with drivers who are smiling and happy to settle for 2nd like Truex was or do they still support old school tough guys like Kyle Busch and Dale Sr?
Fans don't want drivers to be boring. They want drivers to say what they really think.
Who do you consider Fords top driver to be? Edwards can be special, and is a walking billboard, but Kenseth, given he gets decent equipment, still seems to be quite talented and underrated. Then there's Biffle who rarely has had great cars.
Carl is the most talanted driver, but Matt is better than anyone in the sport at getting the most out of his equipment and making a good day out of a so-so car. So if my car isn't great, I want Matt. If my car is really good, I want Carl. Biff is somewhere in between those two.
How crazy would it be if Jimmie's streak ended with him not making the chase?
Bruton ought to offer $20 on that.
I meant $20 million.
Since Kyle didn't talk to the media as Coach Gibbs and Denny did the speaking for Kyle, how can fans say that Kyle whinned?
Fans can say whatever they want. It's part of being a fan, or in this case, a non-fan of Kyle.
I was there on Saturday and I booed Danica too! She came off selfish and conceded. She's not a team player. If it were my team, she wouldn't have a job right now. There are so many other better drivers that could have that seat other than Danica. what a shame.
Easy to say Mike, but they aren't any other drivers who can bring in the sponsohip money Danica brings.
It seems to me that if you are not Hendrick or Gibbs your race team has no shot at winning the title.
Penske might argue that point with Kurt Busch. And Harvick still leads the standings for RCR.
Kyle Busch may be a talented driver, but he still has alot of growing up to do, just ask Denny Hamlin.
Playing devil's advocate here, Kyle might argue Denny has some growing up to do by not wrecking your teammate.
NASCAR really needs another driver like Big E. No matter what, when your driver was in the lead you always wondered where the hell Sr was!!
Drivers like Earnhardt don't come along every day. In my opinion, he's the best there ever was in a stock car. I'd pick old A.J for open wheel.
Budweiser or UPS should be jumping all over Harvick. Personality is finally meeting up with some solid results. Harvick doesnt look like he needs to be IDed to get a Budweiser like Kasey Kahne. Can you imagine Harvick bringing back the "We Want to Race the Truck, People Love the Truck"
Harvick does a great job on commercials. He gets it, mainly because he has his own team and he knows what sponsors want. But don't downplay Kasey's appeal. The cougars love the guy.
Gotta run folks. Enjoy one of the biggest day's in racing on Sunday. Take care. Peace.
