Hello all and welcome to another fun-filled fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. We're nearly two months into the baseball season, so obviously a long way to go there, and I know some of you have football on the mind. So, thanks for showing up, and let's get going!
Drop Penny for Zito or Ely?
Yeah, I probably would. I know I really liked Penny about three weeks ago, but when a guy like him starts to get pounded, I don't want to wait it out. I assume it means something. Zito has been good - better, really - all season, and even when Penny was doing well I would have taken Zito. Ely doesn't walk anyone... I'm buying on him as well.
Eric, help me out here. What do I do to clear space having Martin Prado, Kelly Johnson, and Jose Lopez all on my roster? At least one needs to go.
Make a deal! Lopez has 3B eligibility, so you explore that angle I suppose. I'd rank them Prado, Johnson and then Lopez, incidentally. I do expect Lopez to get going and start knocking in runs soon, but I don't see Johnson completely falling off, and Prado is Placido Polanco. Same hitter. Same stats. And batting average is not so easy to secure.
Is A-Ram a must-grab waiver claim in NL only leagues? He's got to be better than his first two months, right?
Unless injury is the problem, which I suspect it is. I think Ramirez will get things going, but it's been two months now, so I do have concerns. And whether it's the shoulder or the thumb, something is clearly wrong. I'd grab him, but don't use him.
Pujols for Verlander/granderson?
I'll just say I have no concers about Albert's "cold" May. He'll be fine. If you need pitching, this deal makes sense. Verlander is safe. Would I do it... probably not.
Talk to me about Alberto Callaspo, Mr. Karabell. Is the power/OPS for real, perhaps breaking out (at his age)? Can .300-20+-.850 OPS be within the realm?
I never would have guessed 20 homers before the season, but now ... he's certainly looking capable of it. A late bloomer for power, but always a good hitter with discipline. It makes some sense actually.
Someone just dropped Aramis - would you please rank him, Glaus and Rolen the rest of the way for a utility role?
I think a lot of people are just dropping Aramis... but I think I have to rank him third here... and I don't really like Glaus or Rolen all that much. I could see Glaus going 25-90.
Corey Hart or Alceides Escobar? Who is better for remainder of the year and who is better as a keeper? I need to drop one and I already have Furcal and Aviles at SS. My OF is also solid.
Well, certainly for this season it's Hart. He's hitting. And he could probably swipe 12 or so bases if he wanted to. I don't know if Escobar reaches 12 steals ... and he doesn't have 20-home run power, that's for sure. I'd cut Escobar.
Still have faith in Justin Smoak, or will Chris Davis be back soon?
Yes, I still have faith... though it's getting difficult to justify it. At least Smoak is a terrific fielder and he takes walks. Davis can't say that.
What is your value for Villanueva? And who do you see as the closer in BAL now?
Wouldn't surprise me if Carlos Villanueva doesn't get any more saves. I think Hoffman is closing before the weekend. And he'll be fine. As for the Orioles, I guess Will Ohman is the guy for the next two weeks... could be Simon or Uehara after that, and Mike Gonzalez should return in early June.
Good trade or bad trade? I gave up Price, Romero, and Cueto for Wainwright and Dice-K. My staff was really deep, but not top-heavy.
Well, can't you make the case Price is a potential top 10 guy... much like Wainwright? I'd sell high on Romero... and to a degree Cueto though. You do have an ace now, but I'd argue you probably did before.
Bye bye CJ Wilson...Hello Clayton, Gio, Anibal, Cecil, Correia??? Thanks!
I actually think Gio Gonzalez is totally legit. I wouldn't dump Wilson yet, but if so, Gio is the guy.
EK, will Smoak start to pick things up? I am thinking of grabbing him and dropping Huff... What are your feelings regarding these two players?
I would do that switch. I don't have high hopes Huff will hit .270 or reach 15 home runs. At least with Smoak there is upside, and certainly the league and ballpark helps.
Eric...Beckham 0 for 4 today...I keep thinking he's a three hit game away from a bust out...am I fooling myself?
I'm with you. This is totally perplexing. Him and Chris Coghlan. I admit, I've missed the boat on these guys, but will continue to wait for each to hit.
What are your expectations of Chris Tillman when he gets the call this weekend?
Look at Millwood. Even if Tillman pitches well, he might not win. A better comp is Matusz.. and there is risk there in that division.
Do you see Adam Lind or Adam Jones as buy lows?
Lind certainly. No worries there. Jones I have concerns. If Jones ran, maybe... but I don't see a power hitter here.
2011 and beyond..... jennings, stanton or castro? thanks
I don't see much power the next few years for Jennings and Castro. Depends on need I guess. Stanton could be a 30-homer, .250-average guy right now. Castro because he's a shortstop is the most enticing to me, and he won't hurt a batting average.
Maybe better wording will get my question answered. Short and sweet. Thoughts on David Wright?
I don't see a major problem... looks like a clear 25-25 guy, just needs to cut down on the whiffs to keep the average in the .280 range. I say he does it.
You Buying Mike Napoli Power Surge? over Buck or Berrojas?
Yep. It took too much time, but I see another 20-homer season for him.
Why is nobody talking about Jenks?
Everyone is talking about Jenks... and he nearly blew a big lead today. But I think he's got 25 saves in him.
What would you do with me- trade for me, trade me away or put me on your bench?
Ortiz has been arguably the best hitter in baseball in May... enough already! He's fine! Deal for him and keep him around!
sticking with the Adam Lind question - would you rather have him or Carlos Gonzalez?
For now, still Lind. I don't presume Gonzalez is a 20-home run guy yet... but Lind could still go 30-100 this season.
What's up with Aaron Hill? He wasn't going to have last year's numbers, but this is ridiculous. Is he going to be a useful player this year, or should I throw in the towel on him
Have patience. Still a 25-homer guy to me.
You wrote in Mondays blog that you expect Beckett to come back and be his usual self. That said, would you trade the declining velocity Nolasco for him?
Yes, I would rather own Beckett than Nolasco... wow...
Do you think Dice-K can start pitching well on a more consistent basis, making him a top 40 pitcher? Or do you look for him to continue to bounce back and forth between mediocre and good?
I think most nights his wildness - and he was wild on Saturday while tossing 7 2/3 no-hit innings - will bite him. I don't know about being a top 40 pitcher, but ownable... yeah.
have to drop one... brett anderson, daisuke, peavy, or ricky nolasco?
For now I'd say Dice-K... the others have to be owned. Anderson returns this weekend, by the way.
Gregg in danger of losing his job?
Sure, he will be all year, but it's not like Frasor is having a good season. I say Gregg saves 25-plus games.
Do you think Scherzer will be a good stash upon his return? It seems his mechanics have been worked through and he is hitting 97 on the gun again with 17 k's in 15 ip.
I do think Scherzer could be somewhat like last season's Nolasco... short minor league stint and voila, he fixes things. Good strikeout pitcher, they're worth waiting for.
Josh Beckett - top 20 SP from June 1 to season end?
Borderline... but certainly someone I am buying.
Where do you rank big Pelf in terms of SP? He was in the 90s in the pitching article this week. I think thats much too low.
Probably, but until he proves he can stay healthy... that's my worry. And his team isn't exactly scoring tons of runs.
I have Bedard and Webb in a keeper league...time to drop both? GO FLYERS!
Go Flyers is right! Can you believe... the Finals! Anyway, I dropped Webb long ago. I would hold on to Bedard longer, though. When he pitches, he pitches well... and maybe now he returns in July.
Name game: Mark Reynolds or K Morales?
I'd say Reynolds. He runs... and I picked him last week to lead the NL in home runs. Morales safer in batting average... but he doesn't steal.
Really? These are the questions you pick to answer? The same tired questions about Ortiz, Beckahm, etc.?????Oh and thanks for pouring cold water on Tilman. Just picked him up based on your non endorsement. That's my winning strategy and it has worked for years.
Fair enough... what should I do, post my own questions? If you want to rely on a 22-year-old kid who got lit up last season and is pitching for an awful 100-loss team in baseball's toughest division... go for it!
Is Alex Rios a sell high guy or do you think he keeps this up?
Always had this ability... no idea what happened last season, but now he's legit again.
FOOTBALL!!!! EK Im in a keeper league where keeper players for what rd they were drafted in choose two Ceddy Benson RD8,Deangelo Williams RD10 and Jamal Charles RD16
Football!!! Definitely DeAngelo... he's in my top 10. After that, even with the difference in rounds.. it's Benson. Safer. Not the same upside as Charles, but there's no Thomas Jones fighting with Benson in Cincy...
Brett Anderson is he safe to start this weekend?
I would start him, yes.
thoughts on nolasco's drop in velocity
Impossible to tell. Normally it would be a harbinger of injury or mechanics tweak, but the Marlins don't appear worried... and it's not like he's getting hammered consistently. Just his last start.
In line of Josh Beckett question... where do you see Lackey ranked from June 1st on?
Lackey scares me.. I would not trade for him. I wonder if he ends up with a 4.70 ERA or something close.
Eric, what happened to Out Of The Box? I really miss the nightly recap.
It's gone, don't know why... I was assigned a first-thing Box Score Bits blog though... so check that out.
who is more droppable at this point... Webb or Sizemore?
Definitely Webb... not sure why people still trust he'll pitch anytime soon.
Can Jose Bautista keep this up?
I'd say no chance, that this guy can't hit 50 home runs, which is his pace...but 35 is looking good.
How dare Pinella shelve me in the bullpen! I'm going to show him and the world that I am still a stud fantasy SP! Right? Help me ...
I wouldn't call Zambrano a top 20 pitcher or close to it... but rosterable even in 10-team leagues, absolutely. He is a strikeout guy.
What are your thoughts on Edwin Encarnacion? Drop Beckham for him?
No. I cannot. Not yet.
What can you tell me about Adam Ottavino? Worth a speculative add? Any upside there?
He is the right-hander who will likely replace the DLed Kyle Lohse for the Cardinals this weekend... looks like a mid-rotation starter. Not a big K guy... I'd probably avoid unless it's a NL-only league.
How about extending the Box Score Bits to 10? 12? I know you want to write more than 6!
This is what I was told to do! I follow orders!
Since I am taking a lot of walks am I in the majors to stay this year ?
I think he'll hit really soon.. .I would definitely wait.
Would you trade Jay Bruce and Edwin Jackson for Rafael Furcal?
Really? Isn't Bruce worth Furcal alone? I know Raffy ran before the injury... but the injury isn't going away.
Eric, would you drop Kurt Suzuki for Carlos Santana when he is called up?
Nah, I don't think I would. Everyone loves the minor leaguers, don't they... Suzuki is pretty safe.
True or False: Prince Fielder will hit at least 35 hrs & 110 rbi's
True on both...
Do you like F. Liriano tonight against the Yankees?
No, not really. Man, what a tough month schedule wise for Liriano...
You know you rip the Orioles every week. Just an observation from a suffering fan. But hey, at least they don't have 10,000 losses. 1983...1983...1983!
OK, whatever... I have nothing against that franchise. Their record is a problem, though, if you want to roster their pitchers. Let's separate bias here.
Will Strasburg be a top 20 starter when he's called up?
We ranked him 41 in the mid-May ranks last week... that sounds a bit high to me... top 20? Wow!
Lance Berkman's barking legs worry me. Is it time to drop him for Swisher? Our league uses OPS as its 6th stat...thanks!
Both should be owned in that league, no? I can't drop Berkman...but add Swisher by cutting someone else. I'd still prefer Lance to Nick even in an OPS league.
What are your thoughts on Alex Gonzalez. Will he keep this good start up and would you trade him and Wood for Polanco?
When did he last homer? I would prefer Polanco over A-Gonz... easily. And Wood.. is that Brandon or Kerry? Doesn't matter for this trade.
Mark Teixeira from this point forward is a top __ first baseman?
Top 5. Easily.
Rickey is the #1 fantasy player of all time. Rickey is the greatest.
Rickey is right.
What's your take on using high end middle relievers, like Zumaya or Gregerson, to improve your ratios? Would you slot them in a starting H2H lineup over say guys like Mike Leake or Gio Gonzalez?
No, why slot them over good starters... slot them over bad ones. Slot them over Liriano tonight. But Leake has proven to me he's safe... Gio too.
Aramis Ramirez or Gordon Beckham....who has a better season the rest of the way?
I have more faith in Beckham right now... that says a lot!
Safe to drop Randy Wolf for someone like Gio or C. Richard?
I would rank them Gio, Wolf and then Clayton.
Sizemore done for the year?
Haven't heard that yet... but it's possible. I'd wait longer before cutting.
Is Buchholz capable of being a top 30 pitcher this season?
If he keeps his walk rate down, absolutely. I ranked him third among Sox starters in a blog Monday... probably closer to No. 2 (Beckett) than 4 (Lackey).
billy butler (including the one he just hit) has 15 doubles and 5 hr, will that trend contiue?
He's looking like last year's version, which was fine... but there's nothing wrong with .300-25-100... Butler is a good player.
Can Thomas Jones run without a dominant O-Line?
I'm betting no, but he will take carries from Charles. That's a shame.
What do thik of Cam Maybin as a power/steals type guy?
I think Maybin is in the minors within a month and Mike Stanton gets called up. Maybin is 23. He just doesn't look ready. If he remains up, I'll say 12-15 homers, same steals. With a .240 batting average, not sure you want that in a 10-team league.
Zobrist has really been hitting. What does his final line look like?
.300 average, 20 homers, 90 RBIs, 20 steals. Really good player...
EK Don't hold back on Tillman, say what you are really thinking, and I totally respect your opinions.
Hey, if he wins the Cy Young, then I will admit I'm wrong. But objectively, look around him... he is very risky.
Funny- Butler just went yard.
Only 20 more to go!
Do you think I should be worried about the performances of Greinke and Felix thus far? While they are awful by no means, they aren't carrying my staff like I thought they would.
Not sure what good worrying will do you. I wouldn't trade them on the cheap. Assume they pitch well and the wins come, in some part.
I give up, seriously you are terrible. You answer questions about the same people over and over while people try to get questions answered about OTHER players. How many questions can there be about: Beckham, Sizemore, Beckett....
Dude... ask me about someone else then. I repeat, I can only post the questions that are here! But thank you for the kind words. We've all got thick skin here.
What makes you think Stanton won't struggle like I have? He hasn't even played in AAA.
Different player. Tons of power ability. Might hit .220, but everyone says he hits like Ryan Howard...
12 team league, owner of a Molina (who cares which one). Am I holding on to Carlos Santana for no reason?
I just think it's risky to rely on a rookie. Santana should hit, though, but the Indians are downplaying how soon he gets the call. At this point, if you own a Molina and have bench space, sure, I add Santana. Oye como va.
I have a lot of 1st/3rd players here. Could you rank the following for the rest of the season: reynolds, votto, youkilis
I'm gonna say Votto first... then Youk. Then Reynolds. I like all three though, all are top-30.
Is Wade Davis droppable? His K:BB ratio wouldn't excite anyone if he weren't a hyped prospect on a hot team.
On that team, it's tough to drop any of the starters. I wouldn't read too much into his overall K-BB rate, though. A few bad outings have soured that rate. This is a 15-win guy.
Any likelihood that Corpas retains the closer role for Rockies even after Street returns? You have to admit he's looking like the Corpas of old...
Corpas does look good... but I think Street will be treated like Lidge in Philly. When they are ready to pitch consistently, they close. Shouldn't be long on either guy...could be within 2 weeks.
Wieters? Keep waiting or do I grab Napoli?
Keep waiting, definitely. Nothing wrong with Napoli, as he's a power bat, but Wieters is more dynamic.
No one cares about the whiners...dont give them the attention they want. Who is for real? Ely, Holland or Francis? None? All? Some?
I trust Ely and Holland... jury is still out on Francis, since walks could be a problem and he's not a whiff guy.
What are your thought on Freese?
Love him. Own Freese on a bunch of teams... I did last year, too, but obviously he wasn't ready quite yet. I say the average drops to the .280 range, but 20 homers, good RBIs.. he's legit.
Over/under on Adam LaRoche's final numbers: .285/30/110?
Under on all three, but by this point we know what he's about.
nick swisher was ranked 162 in the mid may rankings... in an OPS league, he should be ranked ___.
Top 100 for sure... guys like him and Adam Dunn and Carlos Pena skyrocket up in OPS leagues...
ian kennedy or blanton?
Wow... 2 NEW names! I take Kennedy. Better K potential.
Sorry I have to ask...is Ely pronounced "Ellie" or Eli as in the Manning?
Like the Giants QB... gotcha, Big Daddy...
Over/Under... Gio Gonzalez throws 165 innings this season and has an ERA of 4.0
Over on IP... and under on ERA. Apparently I really think Gio is for real.
when will Alex Gordon get a call? He is raking in AAA.
Yes. Playing Left Field for the Royals by the All-Star break... and he can hit.
I noticed that Yadier Molina was ranked higher than Miguel Montero in the May rankings and am perplexed. I planned to drop Y. Molina, when Montero returns in 2 weeks. Am I missing something?
Montero off a knee injury is no lock to produce... and for everyone hatin' on Yadier, look at his recent batting averages. He hits.
I believe Gavin Floyd will turn it around. Do you?
I absolutely do. His track record proves it. Very good June pitcher.
Nate McLouth or Corey Hart in a dynasty league?
Hart... I'm avoiding McLouth at all costs...
Trade away Fielder/Hamilton to get back Votto/J.Upton? Thanks.
Yeah, I would do that. Upton is still going to be a monster...
What are your thoughts on Kubel? Will he break out of this? I know he is a second half guy, but wondering if Target field is a pitcher's park.
Other Twins are doing just fine there. This is on Kubel. I still buy low.
do you see Ianetta winning the starting job?
No. I see him backing up Olivo... or sharing. But he's not the full-time catcher.
OK, thanks to everyone for this spirited chat session. I enjoyed it, hope you did as well. Have a great day and good luck in your leagues....Eric
