Fantasy Baseball w/AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Good morning gang... Happy June. Let's get it started! Who's up first today?

josh (ma)

pick one: vargas, ely, a sanchez or cecil?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Even though a lot of Toronto pitchers will be getting healthy in the next few weeks, I like Cecil to hold on to a job and be just fine the rest of the way.

Pete (NC)

I'm a Cubs fan and my buddy knows it. Is that why he offered me Soriano for the Prince? You turn this down, right?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

It's quite possible that had something to do with it, but I think it's a fair enough trade in a non-keeper.

Matt (Toronto)

Wigginton or Bautista. Who are you more surprised about and who do you think is better suited to keep up their production?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

Bautista on both counts. Jose's "newfound" power is based on a new approach, and can't be dismissed by a lucky streak or a hot start.

Marc (Jersey City)

Glaus had a good month, does he produce for the rest of the season?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Assuming Mr. Glaus does not once again turn into Mr. Glass (Samuel L. shout out!) I still don't think he sustains the numbers.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

Would you consider Gio Gonzalez pretty much an automatic starter at this point?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

10-team mixed, 5-man rotation, yes. I have more faith in him than say a John Garland, going forward.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

Do you think Bonderman is legit? Worth it to cut Harden?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Recent surge is definitely supported by the peripherals. While I'm not ready to suddenly declare him a top-40 lock, he's a much better risk than Harden.

Jaaaseff (Wilmington)

Thoughts on Seth Smith? His line at home: .333/.397/.758

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I don't think he continues to hit three homers a week, but I did pick him for my Baseball Challenge squad this time around, and certainly like him in the short term.

Christian (Long Island, NY)

Cueto has pitched great - and he's ranked #1 on today's Daily Notes - However I'm still a little concern since he's facing Pujols and Co. - Should I stop whining and let him pitch?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Yes. On any given night, a pitcher may give up 7 ER in 2 IP... so be it. As I said in the spring re: Cueto. Draft him, start him until he gives you two awful ones in a row and cut him when that number hits four.

Robbie (Yadkinville)

You thoughts on Strausburg....is he overrated or will he immediately live up to the hype like Heyward?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

I don't think anyone ever lives up to this kind of hype - and even Heyward who has been spectacular still hasn't convinced me he's Hank Aaron - which was HIS hype. I wouldn't be surprised for Strasburg to win 12 games with a 3.50 ERA this season - but I've NEVER seen a curveball like his when it is on.

Rodny (Brooklyn Zoo)

Who is the Real Carlos Silva?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

I'm running out of reasons not to buy in here... it's still hard to fully judge when he's going up against the Adam Ottavino types and getting lots of 3-0, 4-0 leads early... but those K's are coming regardless of the opponent. He's definitely worthy of a No. 3 slot.

James (Cary)

Strasburg is set for 2 starts next week - are you starting him or waiting to see what happens first?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Most rookies I would wait, but this is one case - especially given the opponent - where I jump right in. If he's relaxed enough and that curve gets over, he'll win.

Greg (Miami, FL)

So you're not a believer in Anibal? What about Javy Vasquez?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Anibal is OK... just like Cecil a little more. Javy I do not touch with a 20-foot pole.

Adam (NYC)

Do you drop Kendry in a shallow league for someone like Glaus or Willingham?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

Assume Kendry is not coming back this season. I know the reports were optimistic, but especially in a shallow league, you can't sit on a dead roster spot for several months on the "maybe".

Mark G. (St. Louis)

What will Kung Fu Panda's overall numbers look like at the end of the season? Will I regret drafting him in the 4th round?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

Once the season starts, who cares where you drafted a player? You don't get bonus points for the stats of your #1 pick do you? Your team is either good or it isn't. People attach too much significance to where they got a guy (it's a bit different in keeper leagues, but still...) when they shouldn't care at all. Sandoval is a top-100 hitter, who would have more value if his lineup scored more frequently.

John (NY)

Alberto Callaspo is the most underrated player in fantasy baseball. Discuss.

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I don't know about "most" but if he were putting up the same stats in pinstripes, he'd probably be considered a 3rd rounder by association.

joe (Austin)

Not a believer in most rookies? How about Posey and Stanton - both have tons-o-hype and Posey has performed well in his first 3 games. What do you forecast for them?

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

It's not that I don't believe in rookies to ever do well. Obviously they do. But do I buy in after a week that a guy like Posey is a Hall of Famer? No. Unless it's a keeper league, I'd rather stay with a tried and true veteran until a kid has proven he can handle the adjustments pitchers will make against him.

AJ (Connecticut)

Lots of tough luck for Ellsbury this year. What can we expect from him when he does return?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

The question is when. He's bound to be out a little bit longer this time, rather than risk yet another trip to the DL by coming back prematurely. Once he is back, I expect him to be what we thought he would be - just for a far shorter timespan than we would have liked.

Jay Y (Feeding Hills, MA)

cut b. molina if you have posey?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Why? Posey has been playing first base, not catcher. Would you cut Capps if Strasburg does well out of the gate?

Scott (Plainfield IL)

I picked up Garcia on waivers at the start of May, it's been a good run but now I see his WHIP increasing every start.Over under - 12 wins - 3.50 - 1.30 WHIP.Drop him for Floyd or Baker?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

I'd consider Baker, since I don't believe hitters will continue to hit .288 against him, but I don't fear Garcia is going to drop off so much. The WHIP is only 1.19 isn't it? It's not like he's suddenly up to 1.40.

Kevin (Charlotte)

What if Posey has catcher eligibility?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Obviously it depends on your league, but if you're in a 5-gamer, we're talking 2 more games, and if we're talking a 10-gamer, that one more week. If you've had Posey on your roster as a dead spot, what's the big deal waiting with Molina in a dead spot for a week? And because the playing time for Bengie isn't going to be changed, after that happens, there really isn't any conflict in keeping both.

Brian (Pittsburgh)

Is Big Brother coming back this summer?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Yes. Hurrah! And so is Julie Chen as host. Boo!

Matt ("Work")

Bartlett or Y.Escobar?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Go with the Tampa Bay pear.

Ivan Drago (Russia)

Can Kelly Johnson keep it up?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

I think he ends up closer to 30 than 40 in HR, but there's no reason he can't get to that level. He fights to win for Kelly! For Kelly!

Chirs (MO)

Carlos Zambrano? Would you drop a struggling Wandy Rodriguez for him?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

I've never been a big fan of Z, and I don't think his trip to the pen changes anything. That said, I'd probably be willing to give him the chance to prove me wrong vs. keeping Wandy.

Theo (TX)

Freese Blake or Headley

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Freese.I think Chase is playing way above his head.

AJ (CT)

Nervous about Greinke/Lincecum yet?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Not worried at all about Zack... this is pretty much what I expected from him - he was my preseason SP bust for precisely this reason. It's not his fault the Royals can't win for him, but other than wins, he's still a solid pitcher. As for Tim, the control problems raise a red flag, but he's still a top-10 pitcher, even with those recent woes. Obviously, if we find out he's going to miss time with a recurring blister problem, that would be worrisome, but we're not there yet.

Matt ("Work")

Are you at all worried about Halladay or Ubaldo being overworked come the end of the year?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Not one bit. People put way too much emphasis on IP.

Mike (VA)

AJ...your top 5 SPs from here on out? Jimenez, Halladay, Lester, Wainwright, Johnson?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

I'd put Lee instead of Lester, but otherwise I like your list.

Dan (Wrigleyville)

Why is Chase playing above his head? Any analysis behind the reasoning?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

I think Headley is a good player, but fantasy-wise, he provides no real power --- most of his hits are singles, and while he gets a few HR's, the lack of doubles is a concern for that to continue, and he plays in that Padres lineup where runs/RBIs just don't seem to be there at the level they should. If not for his SB total, I probably wouldn't even look his way at all.

Max Scherzer ((Detroit))

Am I back? I sure do seem to have figured it out don't, I? Am I a top-30 SP going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I'm not completely dismissing the 14-K outing. But come on! That's so outside the norm for any pitcher, even Max. You simply have to see how he does the next time out before buying in. Maybe you claim him off waivers, but top-30? We've got a long way to go before we anoint him the chosen one.

JoJo (Richmond)

Shane Victorino or Jason Bay?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Right now, Bay. Over the course of the season, Shane. Both will ebb and flow greatly, and if it times out right, you've got a great OF between the two of them.

Jonathan (Tulsa)

Is Nyjer Morgan even ownable anymore?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

The second coming of Juan Pierre? Not really...

John (Buffalo)

Morrow's control is getting better. He is a free agent right now, time to pick him up? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Certainly he's reached spot start territory, and the upside has always been there.

Danny (Cleveland)

Grenike/Garza or Wainwright/CJ Wilson

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Double G. No doubt.

Ben (Ohio)

Thoughts on Kinsler the rest of the way? Was offered him in a trade, wondered is he still top 3 at 2B, where does he fall in your hitters?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

He's pretty low right now actually... 2B is deep. But I would trade for him. I like him to be on the upside from here on out. Not top 3, but solid.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That's the cuckoo clock... time to fly. Sorry we can't get to all the Q's. Find me on Twitter and I'll try to get to some more. Until the next time... be seeing you!
