Greetings from New York, Fight Freaks! Big weekend here with tonight's BWAA annual dinner and tomorrow night's big card at Yankee Stadium. I am totally psyched. Big notebook is up, we have plenty of stories on the fight and the schedule is updated along with a new blog. So check it out and let's get to it.
Let me get this straight- Wlad is so desperate to get Haye in the ring that he caved in on Haye's ridiculous demand for a 50-50 split, and still Haye ducks ?
My understanding from the Klitschko side is that they offered 50-50 with no options and have been rebuffed.
Hey Dan, is it true that ESPN is going to air FNF on July 9 from Twin River Casino in RI w/ Hank Lundy-John John Molina as the main event?
That is what has been announced.
Dan, so whats your prediction for tomorrow night?
To me if Cotto has anything left, he will beat Yuri. But if Cotto has slipped as much as some thing Yuri will outbox him and win a decision. I think Cotto isn't as far gone as some think and he'll find a way to win.
Do you think Andre Berto, Paul Williams, or Sergio Martinez will ever be a draw?
I think it's possible all three could be but it will take work. Berto needs to be more active first off. Williams needs to fight in places like Washington and Atlantic City. Martinez is tougher because there is no natural place for him to fight, but he has a lot of charisma.
I don't know what kind of strings you can pull, Dan, but you have GOT to get that kid Saul "El Canelo" Alvarez back on tv. He was fun on the undercard of Mosely/Mayweather, and I cannot wait for him to get to the championship fights. In the mean time he should be headlining FNF.Also, I saw somewhere online that Mayweathers plan B is Martinez. Any truth to that rumor? Thoughts on a winner?
Alvarez makes too much money in Mexico to be on FNF although I would like that. His next fight is in July in Mexico and after that I think we'll see him on HBO or HBO PPV undercard in the fall. As far as Mayweather, I think Martinez remains in the mix if they don't make the Manny fight.
What are u thoughts on caballero vs wilfredo vazquez Jr? and do you think that they fight could be made?
Vazquez is a very exciting young fighter. He's looked good in recent fights and defending his belt last week. I think him and Gamboa could be down the road a few years if Vazquez moves up. But Gamboa probably will eventually move back up to 130, so they could miss each other.
i dont think cotto is shot, he lose to margocheato and the best fighter in the world right now. i say he wins a ud over foreman. what do you predict?
I know what happened in those losses but what did they take out of Cotto? Not to mention tough, hard fights with guys like Mosley, Judah and Clottey. They take their toll.
Hey Dan, I have been keeping a close eye on the Marquez-Diaz II undercard, and seems to have hit a snag. I was wondering if there is any truth to a split site showing of Khan and possibly Casamayor from England. I also heard Robert Guerrero may fight on the undercard, if so, wouldn't it make sense to finally match him up with Katsidis on July 31st?
There is a very good chance Khan will be on the PPV in a fight from England. Maybe Casamayor or Katsidis. Guerrero on the card is still one of several possibilities. I know Richard Schaefer is working hard to put on a reallly good undercard and I have hopes he will pull it off.
I understand the appeal of being at a fight with a great venue like Yankee or Cowboy Stadium, but how does the venue effect at all the people watching it on TV?
I think it just adds to the overall storyline and drama. It's just freakin cool and HBO will do a good job of showing folks just how cool.
Hi Dan,so what's the prediction? I pick Yuri by decision. I think his jab and reach, plus the movement, will defeat a slower Cotto.BTW, I saw Haye on a milk carton next to WW.
If Yuri indeed wins, that jab of his will be the key.
We have breaking news from the Bat E-mail.
Top Rank source telling me that they have reached a deal to promote Guillermo Rigondeaux and have worked out an agreement with his current promoter to take over his career.
Dan, so pumped for tomorrow nights doubleheader. i got cotto via tko round 11 and green losing via decision in an all out thriller.
I think the Martirosyan-Green fight could be a pretty damn good fight.
By the way, I went to a Friars Club roast for Bob Arum last night. George Foreman, Tommy Hearns, Pacquiao, Berto, Ray Mancini, among others, were in the house. Much to my surprise, I took my assigned seat in row C, seat 8 and low and behold Tommy Hearns was seated next to me. That was pretty freakin' cool.
If Zab officially comes down to 140 where do you see him in the mix of things??
Right now he is not making 140, so it's premature. The July fight on ESPN2 will be at 143. I still have my doubts he will come all the way down but if he did he would certainly be an interesting addition to a loaded weight class.
i think cotto isnt as shot as some think ...manny steward has been working on his balance ..i say cotto gets the decision in a good fight
Is there any news on the Mayweather/Pac fight. Do you think it will actually happen? If so who has the edge
I have spoken to some people in recent days about this and off the record, I have one person telling me there has been ample progress made and that it looks pretty good. But another person very close to things tells me they do not believe the fight will happen regardless of what we may be led to believe. So I guess we will see what happens. That's about all I can say.
Any idea how many tickets have been sold for tomorrow?
I am told to expect a crowd of about 25,000-30,000.
Dan, very good card last Saturday here in Puerto Rico. Arroyo twins look like the real deal. What do you see next for Rocky Martinez? His people are talking about Jorge Solis. Good fight? There isn't much else for him at Jr. Lightweight. Have fun tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium, wish I could be there.
I really enjoyed that PPV card. I think Peter Rivera put on a good show. The Arroyo twins interest me. They're just starting out so I'll give them a chance to develop but I want to see more of them. Solis may wind up facing Gamboa on July 24 at 126. Not much for Martinez at 130 unfortunately. He may have to go to 135 for a bigger fight. Or drop down to 126 if he can.
What are your thoughts on the Martirosyan-Greene fight tomorrow?
Good matchup. Winner can go places. I like Vanes in a tough fight.
DTM....Brighter future, Benavidez or Gomez??
Jury is out but if I had to pick right now I would say Benavidez.
You have been to fights in Houston, Dallas, NY, and AC lately. Which is the best fight city ?
All had good things. I have been to fights in Memphis, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Little Rock, Philly, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Phoenix, and other places. Basically all over the country, not to mention places like San Juan and Cancun. Each was an interesting experience.
DTM....excellent notebook today as usual....Will Escobedo wait until August to fight Morales or do you have any idea who else is out there for El Terrible on that date??
Not sure what Escobedo will do but there's a good chance Morales' opponent will change with the change of schedule.
Dan loved your blog on the Top Rank Gamboa card for July it was good to see someone criticise a boxer and promoter for so clearly ducking a good fight and putting on a poor show. Is there any chance that HBO reject that card if the fights you mentioned are made?
I think there's an outside chance HBO could just pull the date from Top Rank.
If Mayweather Pac can not come to terms again what are the best options for Mayweather?
The witness protection program.
Dan, will Roach go back to training Rigondeaux now that he's with Top Rank?
I think that is possible. I just saw Freddie before this chat and I should have asked him.
dan ..people have been saying yuri foreman is fast ...havent seen much of him....is he really quick?...and will this quickness cause cotto major problems?
He is tall, quick and has a good jab. A good technician.
any fights to look forward to on the untelevised portion of the cotto foreman card
Pawel Wolak-James Moore should be a fun fight and I am looking forward to see Jorge Diaz, a featherweight, who is one of my favorite prospects to watch because he is very entertaining.
what are your predictions for cunningham/ross and sylvester/karmazin?
Good card! I like Cunningham and Sylvester to win decisions.
Dan the man, love the notebook this week. Can you explain to me why Khan is looking at Casamayor rather than Bradley, a rematch with Prescott or Alexander? It seems the latter would have more money and draw
The July fight is in England and there is not big US money for it. Also, Bradley and Alexander are not available as they have other bouts planned. Those fights should happen down the road in a fight or two. Prescott would be fine, but I don't think Khan or his people are anxious to do that again.
Any idea if the Yankee Stadium box office will be open tomorrow evening for walk-ups?
I'm pretty sure it will be.
Alexander's trainer and Bradley have a nice back and forth going right now. Do you see that being the next fight for both and do you see it being in St. Louis?
They are doing their job to hype an eventual fight. I doubt it will be next but eventually, I would expect it to happen. The site? Let 'em make the fight first and let's see how Alexander draws in August.
What up dan is there any chance that we see a mosley-clottey fight?
For what purpose?
should cotto get by foreman, i heard some talk of him facing angulo. is a young, hungry mauler like angulo too much for cotto at this stage, or does miguel have enough to outbox him?
The "talk" of that fight is that Angulo's promoter, Gary Shaw, would love to make the fight. That is all there is to ir right now, which means there is nothing to it. I guess that could change. Would be an exciting fight.
Is it just me, or lately has any fight not involving Floyd Maythweather, Pacman, or Miguel Cotto had extremely poor attendance?
Hey Dan, I heard that Roy Jones will be broadcasting this saturday for the Cotto/Foreman fight. Does this also mean that he will possibly get a full time job back at hbo broadcasting? He doesnt do a bad job.
At this point, Roy is simply filling in for Emanuel. That is it. HBO has told me time and again that the plan for now is a two-man booth on BAD cards. When Manny isn't available, Jones could fill in or they could use somebody else.
If Cotto wins by KO, would you be surprised? And who do you think he would fight next?
I wouldn't be surprised at all. If he wins I think he would be in the mix for a rematch with Margacheato, maybe even Pacquiao, Arum said. We'll see.
If they keep racking up wins, eventually volume can overtake quality. It's not their fault that they didn't have competition in their era. Larry Holmes didn't have a lot of big names to fight either. Joe Louis fought a ton of bums.
Did the cancellation of Agbeko's last fight have anything to do with his mandatory position for the Perez rematch?
Yes. When the fight was called off and time past, it put Perez in a mandatory period so the IBF ordered him to face the next leading available contender, which was Agbeko. There was not enough time (under IBF rules) to do an eliminator before the mandatory was due.
Khan-Judah would be a good test for Khan against a guy that's fast AND can crack. Natural sellout at MSG. What do you think?
I think I would like to see that figth at some point.
Dan, do you ever think that HBO underestimates its own power? It seems like they tolerate promoters who avoid the most competitive and interesting bouts for their fighters. If they took a tougher line and turned down weak match ups, maybe the best would fight the best more regularly?
Sometimes HBO does do that but I think more important is if they are going to take a match that might not be exceptions they could cut the money dramatically and have more to spend on bigger and better fights. Often, it seems like they compete against themselves. And sometimes they radically overpay for a fight. Like why did they pay $750,000 for Victor Ortiz vs. Nate Campbell? But, that said, I think generally HBO does a good job buying its fights.
Danimal, it was reported that Berto is considering going down to 140lbs. If that were to happen, where would you rank him in terms of skill in the division?
I spoke with Andre last night and asked him about that. He said he won't go all the way down to 140. He said he is willing to come down lower than 147 if one of the big names at 140 wants to fight at a catch weight but he really has his eye on a big fight at 147, be it Mayweather, Pacquiao or even Mosley.
Dan, it seems like you've really enjoyed going to fights at Dallas Stadium and Yankee Stadium. What other venues would you like to see a fight in that you haven't had the chance to?
Dodger Stadium would be cool. Arum talks about doing a fight at the new Meadowlands, which would also be great.
I watched some of the game last night. Knicks are my team. Can't ever root for Boston in anything, so go Lakers.
dan, aside from pacquiao who other boxing personalities will be showing at bwaa tonight?
Not sure of everyone, but Manny will be there. Berto, Tommy Hearns, all sorts of people in the industry. It should be a lot of fun. There are limited tickets available to the public and it's a great chance to hob nob with people in the industry.
Will ESPN telecast the Cotto-Foreman weigh in???
I am not sure if we are taking it live, but I'm pretty sure we'll have hili on FNF and on the news shows.
Has Kelly Pavlik mentioned possible first opponents at 168?
I guess it begs the question (maybe) - what is HBO paying for tomorrow's fight? There was talk early on of it maybe ending up on PPV.
I believe it's in the $2-plus million neighborhood.
Dan,Wanted to give you props for your blogs which often contain alot of info condensed in one or two sentences. Makes for good, quick reading. Keep'em coming.
There's a new random thoughts blog up this week.
Sorry Freaks, just had a massive laptop crash. Thank goodness this piece of crap is on its way out. I have a new laptop on the way. I should have it for my next fight.
Can you confirm the time of the weigh-in? I am getting conflicting reports over here. Thank you.
It's at 3 pm.
This is a long break. Hopefully some extra special breaking news....
I wish. Just a crappy laptop that sucks.
Hey Dan, earlier you mentioned Ray Mancini was at a roast. What is Boom Boom up to these days?
Ray is involved in various businesses and filmaking. He was there with his son and really seems to be enjoying his life. It is great to see. He's a great guy.
If Schaefer was serious about a freak card, he better make Khan-Katsidis and not Khan-Casamayor. That would be a joke.
Khan-Casamayor is not a joke at all and I would not mind that one bit. It's a fine fight, especially for PPV undercard. Besides, Casamayor beat Katsidis anyway.
I too loved the recent Fight Camp 360. On air at least Lou Dibella comes across as a much more likeable guy than Shaw or Goosen, who appear like curmudgeons. How close is this impression to reality?
It is 100 percent correct!
Dan, why does ESPN give French Open Tennis so much coverage, a sport that has limited appeal in this country, when compared to boxing? Also, women's softball gets on ESPN but men's boxing is always relegated to ESPN2. What's up with that?
No clue. Above my pay grade.
So apparently Michael Koncz got sucker punched by a member of Pacquiao's crew. Best news I've heard all day. Too bad Ariza didn't finish the job last time.
Yeah, somebdy took a poke at him. Stuff happens.
Being from Oklahoma, I'm pulling for Allen Green. What kind of chances do you give him?
He's confident and he can punch. So of course he has a chance.
When will you do the 13hr record-breaking chat? We're ready.
No, because I need to catch the 1:30 shuttle to the weigh in.
Dan, are you from NY?
Alright Danimal, gotta give us the best joke you heard at the roast.
It's a family Web site but let's just say many F-bombs were dropped.
Dan I was NOT gonna buy on July 31 but if khan/katsidis is on the card I WILL buy it
Dan, are you gonna get rained on tomorrow or is your seat under the canopy?
My understanding is that the press section is covered.
Can I come to the BWAA dinner too??
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. If you're really in the basement, go clean the cat litter.
What, one hour into a chat and no mention of the WBC?????? We have officially stripped your unified super duper regular intergalactic undisputed silver interim diamond champion emeritus in recess twice removed. Of course, you can have it back, for a small sanctioning fee.
Dan the star wars reference was classic!!
I am glad you liked that!
Dan,no Bob Arum on todays chat? Anyone u can pull to join the chat?
I'm alone in my hotel room so no, unless you want me to go into the hallway and grab a maid???
How does Jesse Feliciano get a license?
One of the many questions to ponder.
Any chance of Tony Thompson getting another significant fight? He to me is now a now Top 5 heavy.
I think so. I don't think he's top 5, but he's legit top 10.
So with Perez-Agbeko II coming, do you think Mares tries for another belt at 118? Would be kind of hard, since Moreno has a rematch with Cermeno coming up.
Gonna be tough for Mares to get a title fight right away.
As a Detroiter I followed Johnathon Banks' career very closely, but after what I saw last weekend, I can't make any more excuses for the guy. Not sure if it's heart, or he doesn't train hard, but he's wasting talent thats for sure.
He ain't going anywhere except to get a real job somewhere.
Dan, when you know that an undercard is less than impressive, do you show up late to fights or do you feel obligated as a journalist to be there when the first bell rings?
I usually get there for the first fight regardless. Sometimes if it's a really bad show I might miss the first fight but I am usually there for everything.
While I don't dismiss the toll Cotto has taken, I believe his recent struggles are more due to bad training. He hasn't throw the hook to the body consistantly since the Margacheato fight. Hopefully Steward will have him sharp and we can see for sure if he's "shot". I predict Cotto KO7. He handled Mosley's speed so Yuri should be no problem.
Dan, is Ken Hershman more of a boxing guy or business man? I was appalled to hear him say "that's why YOUR sport sucks right now" to the promoters, like he is just there to host the Super Six from a business standpoint, not because it's good for boxing. Am I wrong?
Ken is a lawyer by trade and not a "boxing guy" per se.
When will we see another big fight in Washignton DC?
Hopefully, when Paul Williams fights there eventually.
Dan, your last 2 chat lengths have been less than stellar, hovering around 2 1/2 hours. Any chance we go back to the normal 5 hour chat or do you have more important stuff to do today?
You're an idiot.
Why wont Donaire fight somebody good? If I read right the guy he is fighting is coming off a shutout decision loss?
It's pathetic, I agree. Really disappointing and frankly disgusting. But it is not Nonito's fault. I know he wants to fight top opponents.
I have read on a couple of other sites that HBO has used quite a bit of its boxing budget up already. Is this true?
Shocking that it would have used up a lot of its budget when the year is half over!
After Cotto loses this weekend, how long is it before we see a Yuri Foreman Grill?
Maybe a special Kosher grill?
Love the possible Jorge Linares-Rocky Juarez matchup. Forget the five failed title shots, how many crossroads fights has Juarez been in?
It's a solid fight. If it happens and Rocky loses, he should just call it quits because he'll be finished.
Dan you need to make it up to Montreal. I have a feeling you would rate it one of the best fight cities.
I've been to Montreal a few times and it's a great city, but not to cover a fight yet.
Dan, is cuban olympian yorde3nis uggas' debut being televised tonight on espn or not
He is on the card and could be a televised bout.
Your thoughts on the WBO's perplexing decision to strip Martinez- not that it matters, Martinez is the Ring (true) champ
Short sided and just par for the course.
Dan,Would HBO buy a Wlad Klitschko-Povetkin fight? Seems they are only interested in a Haye vs either Klitschko Heavyweight fight?
If Haye doesnt want to fight Wlad, what can Wlad do? He'll go and fight Povetkin, who everyone ranks in the top four at heavyweight. So I would like to see HBO buy that fight if Haye runs away again.
If Ricky Hatton were to have a child and name him Ricky. How many Ricky Hatton's would there be?
Pay the man, Shirley.
What do you think the likelihood of a Berto-Bradley fight is? And do you think it would be at 140, 147 or a weight in between?
Helluva fight. IF it happened, I would say it would be over 140.
Dan, do you agree with Bert Sugar, Roy Jones at 88 on the ATG list? Maybe there should be more bigger names on his record but don't you think that 88 is too low on the list?
I would definitely have him higher. The Roy Jones of 1990s and first half of the 00s was untouchable.
How do you like the new Yankee Stadium?
Haven't been yet, which is why I am excited for the weigh in today.
When did the Klitsckos make the offer to Haye?
It's the offer on the table from what I am told.
did you attend the bob arum roast?
Banks-Gavern II on the undercard of Jones-Hopkins III?
Banishment, are you hungry?
If Haye doesn't accept the offer, he has lost face and makes his trash talking even more ridiculous. This guy is making B.J. "anyone, anytime, anywhere" Flores look credible.
At least Haye faced Valuev and Ruiz, which is two more living bodies than BJ has ever faced.
Hey Dan, Would you happen to know when FNF will be in NY/NJ? I've been waiting to get a chance to see it in person for years.
The Judah fight on July 16 is in Newark.
Rewatched Zab Judah-Miguel Cotto on the YES network the other night, underrated fight and crazyyy atmosphere - were you there for that?
Yes I was and it was INCREDIBLE. AWESOME atmpshere. One of my top 4-5 of my career.
Hey Dan, what time is the weigh-in today? I says 3:00 on one site, but Yahoo, who is streaming it, says that it's at 4:30.
It is at 3 pm.
Dan what do you think about the possibilities of tomorrow nights winner being next in line for a shot against Manny if the Mayweather fight breaks down? Would it be logical because I'm not one who would want to see a second Manny vs. Miguel
It is possible.
As a Haye fan, I'm getting quite embarrassed.
You should be.
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Sorry to cut it a little short, but I need to get set before I get the shuttle to the weigh in. Hope you enjoy the card tomorrow and make sure to check out the fight coverage, today's notebook and the blogs. Talk to you next week. Peace.
