What's going on, everybody? Happy Draft Day! Do you think the Bulls will actually keep the pick? What should they do with it? Let's get this chat rolling ...
Hi Nick, what are the chances the Bulls trade their first rounder?
Keanu, I think the chances are high. The Bulls don't seem that high on any particular player in the draft so if they get the chance to dump it along with either Deng or Hinrich's contract I think they'll do it.
Hello Nick, who are the Bulls high on for their pick?
Candy, if the Bulls keep the pick I think they'll look hard at James Anderson from Oklahoma State if he is still on the board. Larry Sanders from VCU is also on the radar as well as a few others. As Gar has said a million times though, they'll take the proverbial "best player available".
Nick, I fear people expectations are getting way to high. A lot of my friends are on a bron and/or bosh or bust bandwagon, I don't think it's healthy. While most free agents are vague and non-commital it seems Joe Johnson truely likes our organization. How would you feel about Johnson at 4 years/60 mil? Would we have enough left over for David Lee? Adding Johnson and Lee this summer would fill our two weakest positions.
The Bulls are going to wait for LeBron to make a decision, plain and simple. Having said that, Gar said yesterday that the organization has plenty of hypothetical scenarios in place and will respond accordingly. For the right price, I think Johnson would be a great fit for the Bulls. Plus, DRose loves him.
How is the Deng-to-the-Clips rumor even possible? Don't salaries have to match in an NBA trade?
If something is too good to be true it probably is. I would be beyond stunned if that deal went down.
Are the Bulls gonna be able to get more cap space so Bosh can play with me in Chicago?
That's what they're trying to do right now, 'Bron.
Your thoughts on Thibodeau's press conference? Am I the only one really excited for the coming season?
I think Thibs was a little overwhelmed at the beginning, but his basketball knowledge came through. He lit up a little when he was asked basketball questions and it's clear that he is most comfortable when talking about the game. He comes off as a no-nonesene type of guy. It's clear that he believes he can make this team better in a lot of different areas. It's also clear that he will watch tape until his eyes bleed. I highly doubt anyone will outwork this guy.
How about Luol Deng, #17 pick, Charlottes future 1st round pick to Sacramento for the #5 pick and draft DeMarcus Cousins.
Why would Sacramento do that deal?
Been watching Omer Asik the last few years here in Europe,in my opinion he isn't really anything special...whats your take on him?
The first time I saw Omer was yesterday and that was only for a few minutues. He is a big question mark for the time being, although people within the organization seem to be pretty high on him. It will be interesting to see if he lands in training camp later this year.
are the bulls more likely to win the lebron sweetstakes now that tom thibbeau is the head coach????
I don't think Thibs helps or hurts the cause. Certainly it doesn't hurt that Thibs and LBJ are under the same coorporate umbrella, but I don't think it gives the Bulls a leg up by any stretch of the imagination.
If the Bulls keep the pick what type of player would benefit the team more? A good shooter like James Anderson or post player like Larry Sanders?
The guess here is that the Bulls take a shooter if all things are equal and they keep the pick. Again, I don't think they're particularly high on any one player in the draft though.
Who has a bigger chance of getting traded: Deng or Hinrich?
Hinrich. His contract is smaller which makes him more appealing to a lot more teams.
Why trade Deng unless you were sure you're getting LeBron?
Because you're sure that even if you don't get LeBron you can still upgrade at the position.
Nick why focus on a Lebron who is most likely not coming and not pull out all the stops with Bosh who would fit the team to a T?
LeBron is the best player in the league. He can make the Bulls an instant title contender. Bosh can't do that by himself.
A lot of people say Johnson isn't worth a max deal. Would you agree? And if so, what kind of deal should we offer him?
Personally, I wouldn't give Johnson a max deal. But that doesn't mean he won't get one. Rashard Lewis got a max deal and Johnson is better player than he is. The NBA is a crazy place. If I were GarPax I would offer Johnson 4 years between 50/60 mil.
If the Bulls don't shed any more cash how will that affect free agency? Pat Riley is shedding dough left and right and they are the biggest threat right now. Riley took wade from us in 2003 I hope he doesn't ruin our future again,
The Heat are making a strong push to have as much cap space as they possibly can. If I were the Bulls, and any other team, I would be concerned. Riley will sell LBJ/Bosh that they can play with D. Wade and he can coach them. Plus, there is no state income tax in Florida which always makes it a little more appealing to prospective free agents.
Nick, regarding your Joe Johnson deal, although I don't think he deserves a max either, JJ's already turned down a 4-yr $60mil from ATL.
That was in Atlanta though, not Chicago. I'm not saying he would accept that deal, I was just answering the question as to what I would offer him.
Has Thibs put together his staff yet? Any of his Boston assistants joining him in Chicago?
He is still working on it as we speak. It's a strong bet that Ron Adams and Pete Myers will be two of the coaches on that staff -- among others.
I don't disagree with your points about Miami, but Lebron seems to be someone who loves to be loved. Could the fact that Miami has a lacking fanbase figure into his decision? (I know probably all about the $$$)
The fanbase question doesn't enter into any of this becuase any team that lands LeBron will instantly become the biggest draw in the league next to the Lakers. Fans will be lined up to see him play anywhere he goes.
As a reporter, what was more interesting press conference to cover - VDN's firing or Tom's hiring?
VDN's firing because of all the events which surrounded it. Plus the fact that VDN was actually still in the building and had to see it all.
if we got married, which brian mcknight song would you choose for our first dance?
Didn't we talk about this last week? The answer to that question is "Anytime" ... Are you going to the Coolio concert with me this weekend?
Chad Ford said John Wall will be a better player then Rose and Rondo, do you believe him?
I'll take Rose right now over either of those two because I've never seen a player who is always trying improve his game as much as Rose does. He is always the last player to leave the gym and I truly believe he wants to become one of the all-time greats.
When Stern said there will be no free agent summitt, was he trying to defuse whispers of collusion? I know technically it's no collusion, but some NBA people were suggestng it was somehow wrong to have a preplanned meeting. Here you have D Wade, smoothing free agents, before the free agent period begins, even bad mouthing other teams, and other teams can't do or say anything to these same free agents.
Stern wanted to prove that he was in control. The truth is that there isn't much he can do to stop these guys from talking. Obviously, they've been talking about this for a long time. I think they all have at least some kind of idea where each wants to play.
What would be the most viable trade option involving Captain Kirk?
Any team that is willing to take on his contract and give the Bulls a future draft pick in return. This would give the Bulls the cap space that they are searching for.
With Farmar wanting out of L.A., doesn't Kirk make sense to the Lakers?
It does. Kobe has always loved Hinrich's game as well, but what would the Lakers give back to the Bulls to make them want to do this deal?
What about Rudy Gay? Couldn't the bulls get someone like him to play with Bosh if James stays a Cav. Wouldn't he fit and wouldn't he be cheaper then Joe Johnson?
Gay would be a nice fit, especially if Deng leaves, but Johnson is a better shooter and a more polished scorer. I think the Bulls would be willing to pay a little extra to get him if both were available and willing to come to Chicago.
How are teams going to fill out their roster if theyre only clearing up cap space to sign 2 max free agents?
They're are going to be a lot of players signing for the minimum, or close to it, come August.
Which team(s) do you see landing two big free agents this summer, Bulls, Nets, Knicks or Heat (adding Wade + another one doesn't count for Miami though, so guess they need to add "3")
Bulls and Heat are the best chances. I think players all over the league love both of those cities and they would really enjoy playing with either Rose or Wade.
All right everybody, I've got to get out of here and get ready for the draft. Good questions as usual. Listen to J. Hood and I live from the Berto Center tonight on ESPN 1000 and ESPNChicago.com.
