Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

jordan (el cajon)

Shawn Merrimen 10 sacks over or under your call

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

I'd say under -- 8.

Kevin (KC)

Which team is looking to have the biggest improvement on last season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I think the Chiefs are the msot improved team in the AFC West, especially on ofense and on the coahcing staff.

shanard ((slc,ut))

Bill, oakland should either make a play for albert hay, or henderson that is still out there to shore up that run D, they would be much improved and they could pose a threat to the chargers.(if they get atowge too).

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

So if they get everybody available?

shanard ((slc,ut))

Bill, should the raiders show interest in atowge, he would make the pass D pretty good, also with a shut down corner on one side he could jump all routes.

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think the Raiders are just fine at safety, although I'm not the hugest Michael Huff guy. He's just OK.

daniel gibson (newcastle australia)

Big fan of your blog Bill, I was wondering your opinion on the chiefs offense. With the double of edged running attack and a fairly decent quarterback, do you think they will be able to score more points than they let in this year? thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

Don't forget the presence of OC Charlie Weis. If the O-line is improved enough, yes, O see this team scoring a lot more.

darren (san diego)

Bill, do you think will the chargers will truly be able to stop the run this year? (Shone Green comes to mind) And do you think they will trade merriman before the year is out, leaving English to take the seat?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

That is the big question. A lot relies on nose tackles Antonio Garay and rookie Cam Thomas. As for Merriman, I see him being in San Diego this year and then leaving in 2011.

Chris (NYC)

Is there any update on where Justin Fargas will play?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I was just thinking about him, Chris. He had a lot of visits, but it has seemed to have dried up for him.

Ryan (Florida)

Bill, Whats the chances the Chiefs finish 2nd in the AFC West?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I think the first team to eight wins gets second place. Eight wins would be a terrific season for the Chiefs.

Matej (Kansas City)

Just how much of an impact do you believe Ryan Mathews will have on the Chargers' offense in 2010?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

I think it will be signifigant. Mathews is the missing link. This team will finally have balance again.

Patrick (Tulsa,OK)

Do you see Javier Arenas making any kind impact this year for KC?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

I like him. I think he'll be a good nickel cornerback and a solid returner. He's dynamic.

Kevin (KC)

Which AFC West team had the best draft class? And what rookie do you think will have the biggest impact in the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

I'd liked them all, but Oakland's stood out. I think Ryan Mathews and Rolando McClain will both make huge impacts right away.

phil (san deigo)

Hello Bill, besides Ryan Mathews what other rookie will have the biggest impact on the Chargers? Go Chargers!!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Butler and Thoms.

Bill (Denver)

Will Tebow's starting status have anything to do with what he does in the late quarters of preseason games, even though he'll be matched up against 2nd and 3rd stringers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I don't think Tebow can win the opening-day job. But I think his preseason work will go a long way in showing how ready he will be to make an impact this season.

JT (Richmond, KY)

Bill, What are the chances that Denver lands Brian Westbrook? Any updates on this?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

It's really been slow. i keep hearing he'll make up his mind soon. The Rams and Redskins also want him.

Robert (San Marcos,Tx)

The past two years Mcdaniels has opted not to draft defense. Why do you think he has done this? Does he really think that a load of FA can get the job done?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Two reasons: He wants to buld his own offense and he beleives in veteran help on defense.

Brian (Las Vegas)

Bill, Do you see San Diego making any other surprise cuts before the season starts? Tucker? Cooper? Scifres? Binn? Cort Johnson was booming a few punts of his own so I was just curious.

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I don't see it. Scifres job is air-tight safe.

Alfredo (Manteca CA)

What is the latest on Richard S.Is he waiting to see if the raiders sign a "big time" DT

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

I think the issue is he is waiting for Oakland to put more 0's on his contract.

Richard (West Virgina)

What do you think of trevor scott playing with the first team over thomas Howard Do you think the raiders think he is actually better or does it just show that howard has fallen out of favor with team management

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think the Raiders are going to give Scott every chance to succeed.

WolfyYYZ (Toronto)

What-Up Bill,I like what i've seen from the Raiders this off-season. Still, I see a big issue on the O-Line. Is there any word coming out of Oakland that either Bruce Campbell or Jared Veldheer will be able to contribute to improving the line this season? I'm afraid no matter the strides made in other areas, the O-Line is going to still hold the team back.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

You are right, the O-line is not improved for 2010. The two kids could be good down the road, but I'm not sure they make a huge imapct as rookies.

everett (arizona)

how is the staus of ryan clady?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

It's wait-and-see. The team is hoping he'll be ready for the start of the season, but it wouldn't be a shock if he missed a couple of games.

david (illinois)

is it true oakland might be moving to a 3-4 defense

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

They say no, but they have added a lot of 3-4 guys in the past year, so we might see a 3-4 influence.

Ryan (Sacramento, CA)

Who will have the best run-game in the AFC West this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

It has to be Kansas City with Charles and Jones. That's nice.

Tyler (Louisville, KY)

What would you say is Denver's largest issue coming into camp?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Run defense and the health of seveal key players.

Pat (NY)

How o you think Cason will be as the other starting corner for the chargers this season.

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I think he's ready. He's made strides. I really wasn't a Cromartie guy so I think this will be an upgrade.

Jacob Columbia SC [via mobile]

Ultimately how do you see the Denver qb situation working out?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Orton, Quinn and Tebow are all active to start the season. If the team does well, Orton stays the starter all season and then leaves as a free agent giving way to Tebow. If the season gets away from Dnver, i see Tebow taking over late in the season.

Ryan (SLO)

What are the chances that any of the Bolts RFA's hold out into the season? If VJ does, are they still an elite offense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I think Jackson and McNeill are the guys to watch on that one. If Jackson sits out six games or so, yes, it would hurt that offense. He's special. The Chargers would still be good on offense, but not as dangerous as they are with Jackson on the field.

Drew (Syracuse, NY)

Bill, Where do you see the Raiders D & O in rankings after this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I'd say 16-18 in both areas.

matt (maryland)

bill great work on the blog.....my question for you is this......what do you think tom cable has to do this year in order to return next you and the head coach of the oakland raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Just win, baby.

Steve (KCMO)

Hey Bill, I read this article sayin that Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel are not going to be able to do much with the Chiefs offense and defense because of our talen we have on the team. What do yu think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

I don't buy it. Those two guys are huge pickups. They will make the talent better. There's plenty of talent on offense. The Chiefs will be better because of Crennel and Weis.

Mike (Ohio)

I keep hearing rumors of Oakland being a landing spot for T.O. do you think this will happen? Plus do you think he is even a good fit for them?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Tom Cable said the Raiders aren't thinking about Owens. I think that could change in August if the Raiders feel like they need a veteran presence. I think Owens is a declining talent, but he'd help that team some.

JR (Kentucky)

Hey Bill, who do you see getting the bulk of the carries in KC, Jamal Charles or Thomas Jones?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Charles will be the starter and Jones will be the backup. I see Charles getting 20 carries a game and Jones getting 10.

joey (Jacksonville, NC)

anything new with jamarcus russell?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

He's trying to lose weight and see what's out there. O think teams may look at him clsoer to camp. Teams to consider include Minnesota and Miami.

steve (lakeport,ca)

Is the AFC West the weakest division in the AFC?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

No, not anymore. I think that's the NFC West.

Jeff (Dallas)

What do you seem to be down on the Broncos? They have a solid roster on both sides of the ball. Granted WR and G positions could be upgraded but I see a 10-6 team. How about you?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

I'd say they are an 7-8 win team.

Rusty (Denver)

Is there an expectation that Demerius Thomas and Eric Decker will see playing time for the Broncos this summer, and into the fall? Their injury situations are unsettling for a team that traded away a huge part of their offense when they let Marshall go.Maybe a better way to ask is how bad are their injuries? Thanks,Rusty

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Denver expects them both to be ready for camp and to make contributions early in the season.

Mike (Albany,NY)

So far Felix Jones looks like the better Razerback in the NFL. Do you expect bigger things out of McFadden this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

You can make an arguement that Peyton Hillis has had a better NFL career than McFadden as well. It's time for McFadden to get going or his NFL career will get away from him.

shay shay ((work))

Bill, should the chiefs make a play for crayton, he would fit the slot perfectly for their offense, are they thinkin dallas will release him or they don't want to give up compensation.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Dallas wants a pick. KC could make a play since Todd Haley coached Crayton in Dallas. It wouldn't be a terrible pcikup, but really, Crayton is just a guy. He had 37 catches last season. He's not an impact guy. But he would help with depth.

Nick (Washington DC)

What is your take on the best player in the AFC West?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Rivers over Asomugha. He makes more of an impact.

Steve (San Francisco)

Bill, Do you think that AJ Smith plays hardball with the Bolts' four restricted free agents (VJax, Merrimen, Floyd, McNeill) and lowers their tender offer on June 15?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

We all know A.J. is a master of the hard ball. I could see him lowering those deals. If so, it will get very, very interesting.

Mike (Ohio)

Bill is it just me or is it just a matter of time before the Raiders explode back onto the scene at a decent team again?! I mean with good young talent and good draft and off season so far plus they have shown flashes last season its just a matter of time! Right?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

It sure seems like we've been saying that for a long time.

chiili (oklahoma)

do you expect farve to com back

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Without a doubt.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you next week.
