Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. Thank you for checking it out. Lots of baseball discussion I would presume for today, so let's get going...

Mike (Dallas)

What do you expect from Max Scherzer for the rest off the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Tough to expect 14 strikeouts every five innings, but I could see something similar to what we saw last season with Ricky Nolasco. Improved numbers, notably in strikeouts, but the occasional awful outing will hinder his overall stats. Doesn't make my top 40 starting pitchers, but soon after that. He should be owned in all leagues.

Ron Dough (Boston, MA)

Frasor or Downs closing in Toronto?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I get it... Rondo..good one. Did Kevin Gregg lose the job? He's close, but I don't think it happened yet. Amazing how that guy can be average and rack up the saves and then boom, all of a sudden he walks everyone. I say Frasor.

Jamie (Los Angeles)

Trading Granderson for Kinsler is a no-brainer, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I think it is, but then again, I also think Kinsler can remain healthy and Granderson will not be a big stolen base guy.

Alan F (Baltimore)

Whats Jose Bautista's trade value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Good luck. Honestly, nobody expects him to keep this up, or approach 30 home runs, so his perceived value doesn't get close to his actual value. Why can't he hit 30 home runs and bat .250? I can see it now.

Richard (NY)

Hi EK! Love your chats. I was about to drop Lance Berkman, but then last night happened. Is he heating up or is it time to move on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Don't drop Lance... the walk rate is there, and he's rounding into form. He's definitely heating up.

Luke (Tampa)

Napoli has been filing in for Posada for me and doing quite well. With Jorge's return imminent, which would you try to deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I'd probably try to deal Posada, who has the bigger name and would fetch more in trade. Napoli just hit 8 home runs in May, hardly a fluke. He's hit 20 the past two seasons. I think he'll play some more first base and could approach 30 homers.

Kevin (Charlotte)

So Stanton gets called up soon, right? How do you see him doing? Also, who sits, Coghlan or Maybin?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

The rumor is Stanton will be up early next week. That in itself does not shock me, since his power appears major league ready. However, who loses their job? Coghlan has six hits in his past two games, and his batting average is the highest it's been since Opening Day. Maybin has been hitting home runs. Cody Ross is hitting .300. I assume Maybin is the one who sits.

RJ (Pittsburgh)

Why so hard on Neil Walker? He was rushed to AAA by Littlefield. He got hurt in his second year and finshed strong hitting well over .300 after a dl stint. He was a victim of a new regime who was not willing to wait. Not an elite player but no reason he cannot be a quality major leaguer with 20+ hr power.

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I totally agree. Did I give the impression in today's blog that I didn't like Walker? Not the case. I think he has value as a second baseman... it's the other Pirates infielders I was down on!

Robbie (NY NY)

Grabbed Carlos Santana last week thinking he'd be up this week and now I'm hearing mid-July...huh???

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I don't know why you'd think he'd be up this week. I hadn't heard that at all. Hold on to him, he'll be good.

Rick (Atlanta)

Hoffman droppable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

I'm seeing people drop Trevor Hoffman, which I can understand, but I still think he'll get more saves. He didn't look that bad last night, though his final line certainly was.

Jimmy (Baltimore)

Hey EK -- Trying to decide between Posey, Olivo and Montero for the rest of the season. Who would you go with?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I would go with Posey, now that he is up. There's little concern about him hitting, and fantasy leaguers don't have to play him at first base. I could see double digit homers with a good batting average.

Mike (State College)

Phils scored a run today! Rejoice! Rolen and Glaus are both pretty hot right now. Which one can I rely on long term as a Morales replacement? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Yes! A run! Currently 1-1 in the eighth inning... keeping fingers crossed while typing. Anyway, I'd prefer Rolen. Why is Glaus any safer in terms of health? Rolen hasn't been healthy for a full season in a while, but he's hitting now, and it's legit.

Jason (Omaha, NE)

Do you trust Big Z or Javy Vazquez on your staff?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Yep. I trust 'em both. They are just too talented to be this bad long-term. Vazquez was terrific last night... Zambrano should be just fine against the Bucs tonight.

Jack (NY)

What might Kelly Johnson's numbers look like at the end of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

I could see 25 home runs... only needs a few per month to get there. But he might hit .250 for the season. Say 12 stolen bases.

Brian (Lawrence KS)

Do you know something good about John Lackey that I don't know? 1.66 WHIP for the season and he's 43 on your SP ranks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Well, those weren't my rankings, but the writer's. I would say Lackey is in that range for me, though. Don't assume Lackey won't pitch better as the season goes on. He's been around awhile, and he's on a team that will help him get wins. He could win 16-17 games... and get the WHIP down to 1.38 or so. That means big improvement.

Richard (NY)

EK, I really liked your article on Haren. I have a fellow owner who is interested in him. What would you gauge Haren's value as?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Well, I wouldn't show him that blog I wrote on Haren, that's for sure. Look, Haren was terrific Tuesday night, and still didn't win. Ask for a top-50 player. That's what Haren is viewed as. I just see little evidence a big second half is coming, based on his history.

Steve (Charleston)

What do you think of Corey Hart? Is he finally living up to potential or is this just another one of his streaks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I think it's more of a streak, actually, but I could see him hitting 30 home runs with a .260 batting average. He's not running, not hitting right-handed pitching and it seems like he's abandoned his old approach to go for the long ball. Hey, good for him. At least he has value.

Thadius (Bluffington)

Edwin Jackson just walked the lead off batter.... He is officially off my radar.

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

You waited that long? Wow....

BriGuy (NYC)

Please fill in the blanks...Brad Lidge will close by ___ and have __ saves this season.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I'll say by June 10 (if the team ever has a save chance) and he saves 19 games.

Ryan M. (Philly)

Contreras pitching the 8th against Atlanta. Does that mean we'll see Lidge in the 9th???

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Contreras allowing the go-ahead run... oh well. No, I don't necessarily think had the Phillies scored in the ninth -as if - then Lidge would have closed the game. Probably Romero. Doesn't matter now!

James (Calgary)

Where do you think Roy Oswalt goes?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Nowhere. I think the Astros will want too much for him. Doesn't matter, he can have a good season even in Houston...

Mike Stanton Fan Club (Miami)

What do you expect from our hero this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

On TV today I took the under on 15 home runs. Of course, I didn't expect then that he'd be up next week. I still take the under. Lotta holes in that swing for smart pitchers to exploit. And I think he's a potential batting average liability.

RC (PA)

Gordon Beckham. What a bum. Confirmed sophmore slump or is there anyway he can turn it around?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I'm certainly running outta patience... but in the leagues I have him in I would wait. I can't understand why he's been so awful.

CJ (Pittsburgh)

What is a realistic trade value for Lincecum or Greinke?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Do yourself a favor and keep them. Both are fine. Greinke might not win double digits, but the numbers aren't bad. And Lincecum was the No. 1 fantasy pitcher 2 months ago. A few 5-walk games shouldn't make him bad.

Erik (Hartford)

Glaus' number project out somewhere around 80-27-120-.277 -- Pretty studly, imo. Are you a believer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

I will say 25-90...but yeah, I am a believer to a degree.

St. Louis (LA)

Who would you rather have? Ely or J. Garcia? Why?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Garcia... love 'em both, but I take the St. Louis rookie first.

Justin Smoak (Texas)

I only have 14 more ab's to reach 130 where I am no longer rookie eligible, do you have the slightest feeling I may get sent down if I can't produce in those next 14 ab's ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

He's not going anywhere. Read the blog I wrote about him a bit later today... very unlucky player at the plate. He will hit.

Corey (Denver)

Is Mike Stanton the next Adam Dunn?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Really, that is not a bad comp at all.

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

But he isn't hitting 40 homers this year...

Vic (NJ)

If Wandy has another bad outing tonight is he droppable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Well, what would one more bad outing tell you? If you don't like him today, then why wait. I would wait, but I trust he can be a dominant pitcher when all is right. He has shown this.

Danny (Cleveland)

would you start Sheets tonight @ Fenway?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I don't spot start much, unless it's a weekly h2h league and it's the end of the week. I also don't own Sheets anywhere. If I did own him, knowing he's got a 2.81 ERA in his past 5 starts, yes, I start him.

Jeff (Vegas)

FOOTBALL - keeper question - need 2 from McFadden, both Steve Smiths, Bowe, and Witten... thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Thank you! Football! Probably keep the 2 Smiths... there's little reason to think McFadden breaks out this season, unless the Raiders give him the clear nod to start.

mendel (fl)

Except that stanton can play defense, and still has potential to be a good hitter for average. Who would you rather have coghlan or stanton, Coghlan really seems to be hitting his stride again!

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I've never lost faith in Coghlan, but I know most people have. I still think he will hit .300. As for Coghlan vs. Stanton, I take the sophomore. I'm guessing from your evaluation you take the rookie!

Sami (Atlanta)

do you see the braves as serious playoff contenders?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I think we have to, don't we? It's the ninth inning and they're about to stretch the NL East lead to 2.5 games over a team that cannot hit at all. Sad.

Dan (NY)

Can you rank Aaron Hill, Kelly Johnson and Beckham for the next 3 years?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Beckham ... then Hill ... then Kelly...

Charlie (NJ)

Who do you like for the rest of the season...the beneficiary of the Fowler demotion known as Seth Smith or Brennan Boesch?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I like Smith more. Looks like pitchers are starting to figure out Boesch a bit. Not much, but some.

Joe (NY)

Do you see Ibanez hitting for more power during the season? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Not really. I have seen nothing from Ibanez this season, and he doesn't appear hurt. He appears just about done. Sad x2.

Fred (Orlando)

Rasmus or Choo or are the both virtually the same player?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Choo is better... more power and speed and average. More refined. Choo is a really good player. Rasmus could be...

Bart (Albuquerque)

FOOTBALL -- should I keep Calvin Johnson or Roddy White?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

I ranked Roddy a few spots better... I'm guessing most people think it's Calvin, but really, he's inconsistent, the team stinks, I have more concerns about him.

Daniel (NY)

What's wrong with your Phillies?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Sorry, this is only a one-hour chat.

Ryan Theriot (Overattedville)

Time to move on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

If Lou Piniella is moving on, then fantasy owners should. I'm a bit surprised... a .285 batting average and 9-for-10 steals gets you benched for Mike Fontenot?

ME (Left Coast)

73% of the questions you answer are from the east. A pattern?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Ha! OK, West Coast players for the next 10 minutes!

Eric (CT)

Everyone keeps saying to hold on to Derrek Lee because he takes off in June? What say you?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Well, Central time zone... yes, I keep Lee. It's not only the June factor. He's a good hitter off to a slow start. Easiest way to turn your season around is to get slow starters who get better fast.

Dave (CT)

Am I a fool for dropping Aramis Ramirez???

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Same deal... but I will say I have more confidence in Lee. Ramirez has to be hurt..probably the shoulder again.

kris (omaha)

does Napoli gain any value with Morales on the DL? Is he a better option than Soto?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Hey! Producer asked me about Napoli and Soto just a few minutes ago! I said yeah, I'd rather have Napoli. I think Napoli could play some 1B, which helps not because he adds eligibility, but because it keeps him healthier, in theory. He wouldn't catch as much.

Brennan (CANADA)

totally ignored ... KEEPER question ... Latos or Castro ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I'd say Castro, assuming it's the Cubs' Starlin. Generally easier to trust bats than arms...

Mark (CA)

which would you rather have Adrian Gonzo or Tulo/Lind

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Tulo/Lind. Perfect time to buy low on those guys, if you can.

Sami (Atlanta)

seth smith, corey hart, or ibanez?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Hart. Could end up with more home runs than the other guys combined.

justin (atlanta)

ARI trading for Dontrelle ... i know you've been saying to drop him, but does this mean the D'backs are slyly acknowledging B. Webb won't be back this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

You know, that information would have been helpful before I blogged about it. That didn't dawn on me. Probably not related, but then again, I didn't expect Webb back anyway.

Brian (West Coast)

Moustakas or Brett Wallace?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I don't see Moustakas in the bigs this season... Wallace should be up in the next month. Gotta go with him.

Will (The OC)

Which is more likely, Flyers to win two games or Beckett to get back into top 20 pitchers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

F-L-Y-E-R-S! But I do buy low on Beckett as well.

Josh (Austin)

Do you agree that Ray Rice will give you the best bang for your buck in an auction league? I think he's going to be the top RB this year and I could see him going for less than CJ, AP, MJD and even Gore.

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I don't know about bang for the buck, since he's likely a top 5 RB in all drafts. Is he really that much cheaper in an auction than Chris Johnson or Peterson. I don't think so. I see what you're saying, but he's not a value pick if he's in the top 5. Thomas Jones is a value pick.

Nick Markakis (Baltimore, MD)

Am I droppable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

That seems premature. He is hitting for a .306 average, after all...

Matt (Boston)

Who is Wallace going to take ABs away from? Should I be worried about Lind or Bautista?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

No. I would say it's Overbay. The fact Fred Lewis has been so good means Lind will not leave the DH spot anytime soon... and Snider won't get his ABs back either.

Bob (Oregon)

is it ridiculous to trade cain or cliff lee for stasburg straight up in a keeper if not who would you deal between the two

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

In a keeper league, not ridiculous. In a one-year league, probably. I hope everyone understood my point in the Strasburg blog Tuesday... yes, he will be very good. But this season there are obstacles, and his value is unreal right now. It has to drop when he actually/mercifully pitches.

CJ (Pittsburgh)

Is Larry Fitz still a top 5 WR w/ candy arm Leinart at QB? How does Leinart affect the draft stock of Wells/Hightower?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Even a guy with a lesser arm than Warner can still find Fitz. I have him in my top 5 WRs, and I believe Beanie Wells has a big season. Leinart I wouldn't draft in the top 20 QBs though.

John (Cincy)

Rolen or Papi?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Hmmmm... I say Papi.

JoJo (Richmond)

What is BJ Upton's AVE at the end of the season? Is 0.270 out of the question?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

At this point, yes it is. He'd better watch out, because Desmond Jennings looks about ready to play...

Brad (Carmel, IN)

How long does Will Ohman remain the Orioles closer? And with them playing the Red Sox and Yankees, does it matter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Is he the closer? Hard to tell when they never get a save opp. I'm hearing Mike Gonzalez returns this month.

YD (Philly)

Aubrey Huff, hitting cleanup and looking like his '08 self... you a believer, EK?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I don't think he's his old self...maybe he hits 18-20 home runs.

Phil (Kansas City, MO)

Considering the new team and hip issues, whwere do you rank Brandon Marshall this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I think I will be one of the few who does not have Marshall in my top 5 WRs... he's like 9 or 10.

Chris (NY)

Does T Snider have value when he comes back, with F Lewis playing so well?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Not really. Snider's real problem is Bautista though... and Encarnacion. Bautista can always play 3B.

Greg (OK)

For crying out loud: Bonderman or Cecil?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

And desperation sets in... Bonderman. Has to be. Can't trust Cecil yet.

John (Toronto)

I disagree. Snider will get his ABs when he returns. Overbay will only give way to Wallace if (1) Overbay is traded or (2) September arrives. EE is the one who will lose the most time, as Bautista will shift to 3B, Lind stays at DH and Lewis in LF, with Snider returning to RF. Anything other than that goes against AA's plan.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I can see that. It's up to Encarnacion, really.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Strasburg for Jose Reyes?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Top 40 pitcher for top 5 SS... um yeah.

Brian (MI)

Any chance that Cano has officially claimed the spot as the top 2b? No one seems to be talking about him....

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Utley is awesome of course, but sure, I'd call Cano right with him.

Bob (Iowa)

Can Fuentes keep his job?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Can, yes? Will... no.

John (MA)

Hey EK. Beckett's back a concern? I've been offered Josh for Octavio Dotel - seems like a no brainer to me.

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

It is. Make the deal quickly.

Pat - NJ [via mobile]

Dom Brown > Raul Ibanez, correct? Why not make the move?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

At this time next season, when Ibanez's contract is almost done, sure. But not in 2010.

Daniel (NY)

Has the hype already gotten out of control for Ryan Matthews? Seeing him top 10 among RBs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Definitely not in my top 10 RBs... not sure he made the top 20 for me.

Jimmy Rollins (On the bike)

EK, Am I still in your top 5 SS? Your still in my top 5 fantasy sports writers.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

No. If drafting today Rollins would miss the top 5. Has to. This injury can dog him all season...

your (call)

celts or lakers

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Lakers in 6.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, thanks to everyone for the great questions -- wow, thousands today! and for hanging out in the room for an hour. We certainly appreciate the readers, listeners, watchers, etc. Anyway, enjoy the sunshine and have a great day...
