Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

Hey all. welcome to our monday hawks chat. What a night last night at the UC. Day off today for both teams then we all gather in Philly for preparations on tues before wed. game 6. One more to go! Fire away

Fitz (My Cube)

Jesse, was that 1st period the best you have seen this entire playoffs? Was trying to remember a better one and I can't.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

Right up there...Game 6 in vancouver was the best GAME in the playofff so Im trying to think if that 2nd period was as good as the first last night. It's close. Just scary what happens when everyone comes to play.

Oliver (Wheaton)

As a member of the media, do you find Pronger's press conference antics to be amusing or has it become a tired act? Sure, he's always good for an easy quote, but he has a tendency to blow off questions deserving of legitimate answers.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

Yeah, yea and no....definitely amusing but sometimes you do want a serious answer...most serious answers are kind of cliches anyway so I'll take the amusing

Elliott (Chicago)

Any insights into why Q waited so long to split up the floundering Kane-Toews-Buff line? Clearly, it was a good decision...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

Good question. First of all, he, and most coaches dont like to change things when the team is winning no matter what one specific line is doing. Remember in games 1 and 2, the Sharp line with Hossa was great so as long as youre winning...that leaves Game 4. Could he have split them up after the game 3 loss? I think so...he did eventually, in that 3rd period. I cant tell you why he waited except to say since game 3 was so close (OT) that he felt they were still going well as a team

David B (Chicago, IL)

Bigger surprise in game 5: MJ skipping the Celtics/Lakers game for a UC appearance, or Chris Pronger having his worst game in his entire career? Oh, and does Dave Bolland get a part in Old School 2 now that Vince Vaughn is part of his goal scoring celebration?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

Pronger

David B (Chicago, IL)

Jesse, great game last night, haven't seen that kind of hunger from the Hawks since they sent San Jose on vacation. Does Quenville look to throttle the Flyers in game 6, or does he slow them down and try to frustrate them at home. Should we be looking forward to another 6-5 game, or do you think Quenville would rather play a more 2-1 type of game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Thats not how it works. At least not with this team. They try to dictate the poace as best they can...if it ends up 2-1 so be it, if its 6-5, thats fine too. They wont change thier style for game 6..maybe some strategy since they are back on the road and they are 0-2 there.

Michael (Chicago)

How vocal has Hossa been with this team about being in the finals having been here the past two years? Does he talk to the guys or just lead by example?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

Example. Unless of course asked something

Michael (Chicago)

Does the extra day off help/ hurt the Blackhawks/Flyers?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:13 PM)

Tough call. You could spin it either way..I'll say the hawks, since home ice has held with the every other day playing maybe breaking it up and giving them a day before going to philly changes something...again, tough call...if they played tonight, probably would favor hawks but they are not

Dave (G. Heights)

Hey Jesse...how about that huge hit on Pronger by Big Buff? Have you ever seen Pronger checked that hard before?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

No I havent. BUff is so strong. Almost never goes down...even if hes hit off balance, you see guys bounce off him. Strong dude

Dave (G. Heights)

Do you think Buff was playing with more of an edge last night? He looked very focused and didn't even really seem to celebrate either goal like we're used to seeing.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Maybe a little. He'll tell you the pucks didnt go his way in previous games and I buy that some...his hit totals have been off the charts..when he was plying with kane and toews, the puck just wasnt coming to the net so im not sure that he was any more dialed in than ever

John (Plainfield)

Do you think Coach Q goes with the same lines as last night in Game 6? Or will he shake things up again to keep the Flyers on their toes?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

I kind of like the idea of shaking it up but like I said before coaches are loathe to change things after wins..especially such a good one. But as we know that win can be meaningless come wed.

Dave (Naperville)

Where you Surprised coach Q divided the toews line in thirds, I kinda expected at least two of them to play together, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the case?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

I liked it a lot too.Really made Laviolette think. It was a good move

Matt D (Chicago, IL )

Jesse, Through the conference championships home ice seemingly meant nothing. Any explanation as to what changed and made a Hawks team that was dominant on the road and .500 at home turn the tide and be unbeatable at the UC now?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

Not really. Just turning out that way. Remember game 3 was ot, and the first two were one goal games so they could have gone either way...pretty much just the normal reasons that home teams usually have an edge

Rob (Chicago)

Any reason as to why Pronger doesn't sport a playoff beard?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

He said its too itchy. Said he tried it once and it didnt work out. Not sure if he meant the beard or that year's playoff run

Joe (Edison Park)

Has Boynton added anything over Hendry?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

I think so. A little less risk involved with Boynton it seems

Oliver (Wheaton)

I'm not totally sold on the notion of Kopecky on the Toews line...how do you think Brouwer would do if inserted there? Really, I'd love to see the beast that was the Hossa-Toews-Sharp line reunited but Sharpy is too valuable as a center right now...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

I dont disagree...Need brouwer to play with that confidence but hes not playing with the edge that kopecky is right now. I think Q likes that

Mags (Tx)

SOme people get down on Niemi. I thinks hes been good so far considering hes a rookie. I think this is the last year of his contract. Do you see the Hawks signing Niemi to a long term deal after they hoist the cup? and how many years are we still stuck with Huet?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

Huet has 2 more years left. Its doubtful he'll be on the roster next year but u never know. He could be sent to the minors. Niemi's been fine. Not winning the series because of him but hes been good enough for sure..He is a restricted free-agent...its either a one year deal cause hes Unrestricted next year or a longer term deal to take him through some years...this will be a VERY tricky deal...Im sure Hawks will say the team in front of him is the reason for most and he'll point to the success he's had coming in as a backup..who knows

yoizel (lincolnwood)

any chance that there is a roadwatch at the united center for game 6?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:23 PM)

As far as I know, there wont be unless there is something in the tv contract that allows for a game 6 or 7...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

BTW, Q said today "status quo" with the lines...no tweaking mosty likely after last night

Jon (Chicago)

Jesse, is Hossa okay after the crosscheck he took last night near the bench?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

Yes

PFW (Chicago)

Any chance Burish becomes active the rest of the year? I think he provides good energy, but can understand why Q chooses to rest him.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

Rest of year is 2 games at most. Anyway, looks like the odd man out here. I thought he should have played last game but they didnt much need him. I would guess same lineup though on the road maybe he's needed more. Hmmm

Elliott (Chicago)

Are the Flyers (or their fans/media at least) trying to over-sell the indignation over the missed high-sticking call on Briere? It's not like the penalties haven't been equally unjust on both sides.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

Seems like they are...WE've seen some missed on both sides..Its annoying hearing all the complaining..Until I have proof someone is biased, i dont want to hear it

Dave (La Grange Park)

How are the Hawks treated on the road in a rough and vocal sports town like Philly? Any boisterous fans lingering arount the Hawks hotel?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

Yeah, you can google some stories. I guess they wanted to "escort" the hawks bus to the arena the other day...a bunch of guys on bicycles or something with some signs...Think it turned out to be 2 guys but sometimes they hear hostile stuff. Just depends...I think there was someone holding a coffin with a blackhawk in it or something as they went to their bus...so you get stuff like that

Michael (Chicago)

After last year how loud do you think Kopecky and Hossa are shouting that being up 3-2 means nothing?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:28 PM)

Loud. 3 of last 4 I think have lost up 3-2 so watch out!

Luke (Elk Grove)

What was the biggest difference that you noticed from game 4 and game 5 that jump started the offensive explosion and how do you continue that for game 6?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:29 PM)

I know it sound simple but everyone came to play. No passangers. They played with aggression..best evidence was the pp numbers. Hawks had tha advantgae for first time because they earned it

jon (Chicago)

If you had to pick an MVP of the series so far for the Hawks, who would it be?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:30 PM)

Hmmm..tough one..sharp and hossa and steeg have been the most consistent in my mind...maybe keith..Im not looking at any numbers because they can be misleading..just thinking about the games...I guess Keith

Fitz (My Cube)

Jesse, who do you think starts in Goal Wednesday? Talk about a tough spot to be in

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

I think it has to be Leighton...Hasek in his prime wasnt winning that game last night..as Boucher gave up a few as well..I think Laviolette is playing mind games to inspire leighton or whatever..Ill be shocked if he goes to boucher...Leighton proved something to me in games 2-4..He rebounded nicely

johnny (oak park)

boynton seems to be a lot more agressive that hendry, do you think that is because he is trying to make a case to stay on the starting roster or is he more physical? i really like the moves Q has made to adjust to this series

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

He is more physical...and of course hes trying to stay on the roster, etc. but thats his game

Michael (Chicago)

In your opinion, what are the three things the Blackhawks need to do to win Wednesday night?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:34 PM)

Good question. Keep dictating the pace and play agressive. Looking back they kind of "let" Philly's forecheck get to them..play in the other end..and Niemi has to be picture sharp. No richards backhanders

Eric (Chicago)

Jesse, how can the Hawks keep up their aggression from last night to Wednesday night? They know what's at stake, I would think pure adrenaline would be flowing in Philly for them and the taste of blood in the water.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:36 PM)

Easier said than done. Not sure how they can do it with 2 days in between and diff venue...but if they can repeat that EFFORT, they'll go a long way towards a win..but every game is different

Jesse Rogers
  (2:36 PM)

Going on espn radio's Scott Van Pelt show in about 4 or 5 minutes so tune in or just give me 5 and I'll be back..have time for a few more before they call.

Paul (NJ)

I will be ini the building Wednesday NIght, I expect a big surge from the Flyers to start. I think the key for the Hawks will be to absorb that surge the first 10 minutes or so. Your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:38 PM)

Everyone always talks about that opening surge...what about the other 50 minutes? In game 3 they survived the surge and still lost..Game 4, they didnt survive the surge and lost so yes, its important but if its 0-0 after 10...then what.

Karen (Chicago)

So where do the scratched players watch the game at? I thought they usually were up in the press box, but I'd guess that's a little crowded these days...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:38 PM)

Suite, dressing room, wherever they can find a spot

yoizel (lincolnwood)

why is it that this team continues to play looser whenever it gets a big lead and then lets the other team get back in the game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:39 PM)

A lot of teams do that. The 3 goal lead is very dangerous. I dont think players know if they should sit on it or keep attacking..It happens. Not all the time but you didnt expect Philly to just go away did you?

Steven (Chi-town)

Does this series come back to UC for game 7 or will the Hawks close it out and skate with the cup on Philly ice?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

I'll let you know Wed. at about 10 pm

Erin (Loop)

Last night's winner was an awesome example of the Hawks that we have known all year. However, do the 4 goals Philly scored worry you in the slightest? Too many goals againts, IMO

Jesse Rogers
  (2:41 PM)

They worry me a little but you know what like I just said, this is the finals and Philly is a good team..the key is they never got closer than 2 goals...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

Radio time..few min or listen to espnradio.com

Jesse Rogers
  (2:50 PM)

Ok, Im back. Thanks for waiting

Hack (Chicago)

What's your gut feeling Jess, are we coming back for a game seven? What do think the national media think about the hawks taking it in 6?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:52 PM)

I guess my guy would say yes coming back but who knows...the flyers great at home and have been resilient..thats good enough for me..but "A" effort by hawks=loss by philly..so we will see

Mike (San Diego)

Do you think Coach Q has any coaching advantage with his days of coaching Pronger in St. Louis or has Pronger's game and tendancies changed significantly since then?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:52 PM)

Not really. He is what he is...dont think there are many secrets

Jay C. (Normal, IL)

What does the defensemen need to change in order to give Niemi an easier game six? Our offense certainly showed up, but the Flyers still have yet to be shut down.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:53 PM)

They have to be on the flyers better as soon as they enter the zone with puck. Quicker, more aware. Im very impressed with Philly with the puck in the offensive zone. Hawks need to be just as impressed and react accordingly..

Pete! (Europe)

Did Pronger play bad because it wasn't his night?Or is it a result of Q mixing up the lines, and the Hawks having last change because they were at home?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:55 PM)

The Hawks came to play with their top effort and maybe he was "stunned" a little. I mean he's not the only guy that played poorly..they just didnt have an answer for the hawks work ethic..I dont think it has an effect going forward

Tiffanie (River North)

It seemed like by splitting up the Buff-Toews-Kane line into thirds it freed EVERYONE up for crashing the net last night. Seemed like you saw Kopy, Buff, Brouwer and Ladd all setting up shop in front of the net. Was it because the line got split or because the guys played more of "their" game last night?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:55 PM)

Thats been the debate since last night. How about both..both those thoughts fit together..

Stacy (Chicago)

I've heard reporters say that teams like the Capitals or Sharks are not built for the playoffs but teams like Chicago and Philly are, what exactly does that mean?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:57 PM)

NOt sure I agree with that completely. The sharks are built fine..JUST NOT FOR THE HAWKS...Wash, maybe you can make a case they arent built from thier goaltender on out, its kind of backwards as they rely on outscoring opponents...but that can make for an upset

John (Plainfield)

Is Toews still the leading candidate to win the Conn Smythe? Or are guys like Buff or Niemi still in the mix?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:58 PM)

I guess its Toews...not Buff..close call...

Pete! (Europe)

Do you think the Hawks try and push the tempo Wednesday night?Or does Q decide to play a more Defensive style?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:58 PM)

Like I wrote previously, they play thier game...not try to change much excpet a matchup or what not

Matt (Chicago)

Jesse, why was there no goalie interference on the Philly goal last night when Hartnell crashed into Niemi's right pad? Was it ruled that he was pushed or checked into Niemi? Clearly it bothered Niemi, but I didn't see much of a complaint or reaction from the Hawks.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:00 PM)

I still have only seen that once..It must have been the reason..It was so obvious that I dont think they didnt see it..Im guessing they ruled pushed into or some other mitagating circumstance

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

As much as he drives me crazy at times, I've grown a bigger appreciation for Steeger during these playoffs. He's chippy, gets in on the action all the time and scores big goals when needed. he'll be missed next season.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:00 PM)

Agreed 100% but he's also changed his game. Simply put, he's playing smarter..unsung hero and one of the most consistent players this postseason

Dan (Palos Heights)

Do you see last night's win as a direct result of changing up the lines, or did it just happen to fall on Philly' s off game in the finals? Do you see this carrying over into game 6 or will Philly have some sort of answer for the line changes?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:01 PM)

I think the win was partly helped by the lines and mostly helped by teh work ethic the hawks brought

Ryan (Aurora)

WHo gets handed the cup first, after the capt?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:03 PM)

Wrong day for that question, my friend...(whoever he wants to give it to..guys with letters??)

Justin (Chicago)

So will Wednesday be your first time being in the same place as the Cup? Obviously, the players are excited at the prospect, but what about you and the rest of the Chicago media guys?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:03 PM)

Follow me on twitter..I'll be twitpic-ing that thing to death..might jump in/on it...Yeah, it will be cool for sure

Jesse Rogers
  (3:03 PM)

@espnchihawks

Bill (Indiana)

I'm pretty sure that I know the answer to this question, but will Fraser and Bickell be able to have their names on the cup if the Hawks win since they played this post season, or do they have to play in the series to get on the cup? If they don't play can they still get on?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:04 PM)

The rule is 41 games or a finals appearance or Im pretty sure the team can petition the league..so fraser for sure...im guessing yes on bickell

Mags (Tx)

Good Interview with SVP Jesse. DO you see Buff and company coming out with that same intesity in game 6? ANd how do they keep that mind set with 2 days off?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:06 PM)

Thats the tough part to predict...buff is always the same, he'll go as the rest of the team goes...I think they can remember what that feeling is like even with 2 days off but like I said before, easier said than done

David B (Chicago, IL)

After a great penalty kill in the second period, the Hawks got a faceoff in the Philly zone. Quenville puts out a line of Hossa, Sharp, and Kane. Why? Hossa and Kane play the same side wing, and Sharp is not the greatest two way center (worst defensively on the team). And of course, Philly walks down and scores. I know Quenville made some great adjustments, but that line selection seems like a huge miscalculation. Thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:07 PM)

Sort of remember that. My guess is simply that after a PK, some of the forwards are gassed and soemtimes a line is thrown together to get throug ha shift or whatever before they return to normal..must be what happened..happens to all teams after a pp..

Jonathan Toews (Hotel Room)

Hey Jesse, I've been trying to change things up so I can put the puck in the back of the net in this series. Is it just me? Should I change something again? Or is it just the Philly D that is that good?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:09 PM)

People should stop worrying about who scored when as long as the team is scoring..not everyone can do it. Toews may not have goals but Kopecky, eager, and sopel do. Its hard to score and sometimes you get it going and sometimes you dont.

Michael (Chicago)

Was Pronger's poor performance all because of the line changes or has playing thirty minutes a night at 35 finally caught up to him?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:11 PM)

Just a bad game for the flyers and hes on the ice the most so he was going to be affected by what the hawks were bringing. Dont think he's unraveling..at least I dont think so

Hack (Chicago)

Do you think it is safe to say that between Toews, Niemi, Kane, Sharp, Keith, and Byfuglien the Conn Smythe will probably go to whoever has the best game in the clincher?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:12 PM)

Not necessarily..it will be the whole thing...though someone could make a major statement..Im still betting on toews

Rob (Chicago)

I noticed last night that Pronger appears to be the only player who is shaved....is there any story behind why he doesn't rock a playoff beard?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:12 PM)

Answered that earlier. Take a look

Paul (Denver)

How pretty was that PP goal by Buff? Total of five passes in the offensive zone had the Flyer's PK unit reeling!

Jesse Rogers
  (3:12 PM)

With Pronger in the box..was very pretty and thats prob why

Erin (Loop)

What is your take on rooting for a game 7 in Chicago? Insane or what?!

Jesse Rogers
  (3:13 PM)

Yeah, pretty insane. Root for your team.. They could lose a game 7..3 teams have done it at home already this postseason. You dont want to risk that

Jesse Rogers
  (3:15 PM)

On that note, thats going to do it..leaving for philly in morn. Hawks will practice here on tued and then leave for philly. I'll be on espn 1000 at 3:10 today and then channel 11 tonight live at 7 pm...again my twitter address is @espnchihawks. look for those pics of the Cup! Great questions all. If you have something pressing, email me at jrogers@espnchicago.com and no i dont know if/when the parade will be! Enjoy the final days...chat wed. live from philly at 1 pm again
